I feel like it’s been a lot. They have added new skins, new armor stats, new crafting recipes, new dungeons, core gameplay polishing, profession balance, spvp additions, a new zone, new mini dungeons, a living story, and epic seasonal events. I don’t know how to express all of that although I will say that using the phrase "expansions worth" sets the bar very high for a real expansion.
Can we change the topic before this thread gets deletified? Burl, can I call you Burly? There’s a fun topic. I play a pink haired ranger, you can call me hun if you want.
Kitten just got real in here.

You guys rock, great competition this week. I heard there’s a guild, OTWO (oxidizer), that’s coming for you IRON. They are corrosive! :p
I may or may not be making this up.
So, just because i have 7 80’s and use most of them regulary im playing bad?
True, wasnt able to solo lupi first try with my necro.
I never said that. What a weird conclusion to draw based on my words.
I’ve PUGd 350+ dungeons, 30 FOTM, rank 23 wvw, 1765+ hours on ranger, and through all of that I’ve been accepted in nearly every group. Rangers actually do a ton of damage, just, popular players like Strife are admittedly scared of playing a more challenging profession. They won’t even test it to see if it decreases their run times.
Or you’ve never played other classes to see how much their damage is.
Playing a profession—which is the correct term— (you’d think a pro like you would know the difference between armor class and profession) doesn’t mean you know how to excel with it. Just because you roll a warrior, craft it up to 80, and slot some exos with ruby orbs doesn’t mean you’re pro. It means you’re just like everyone else, I’m afraid.

a few possibilities…
1. We have tested rangers in our speed runs and.found they suck. And youre delusional.
2. strife is actually scared of using a ranger for some reason.
I wonder which is more likely.
I’m going to need proof since strifey previously wrote on reddit that he was afraid rangers do less damage and that he personally would never use one. That said, people with 5 level 80s usually aren’t any good at playing their alts. I am a hardcore player and have never run across someone—outside of spvp— who was accomplished with two professions. They are rarities. And ranger is so much different than warrior so people who roll one end up using their warrior playstyle, dying a lot, and saying “what?”. I do have a warrior: it’s so boring I use her as my mule. I would have quit the game ages ago of I had to play that profession.
How much damage does a warrior do? Well, I have a speadsheet here with all the numbers and skill coefficients. I also have one for ranger. Math—it works!

@TheMaskedParadim
“You must not do dungeons at all, because you NEVER have pets doing any sort of damage once a boss starts attacking.”
I lol’d at that. Good one. Because you’re lying to yourself and spreading bullkitten from one end of Tyria to the next!
Yeah I use clerics in arah when I pug and turn into a rezzing machine on lupicus. Who said it was only good in water? Hogwash, I tell you! Magi trinkets are decent for a pure support role but normall I will use zerk trinkets.
My party wasn’t used to spirits (PUG) so they weren’t used to running past for the buffs. Clearly that’s what was happening, I didn’t feel I had to point it out. In fact, they thought my spirt despawning meant spirit died so, yeah, people don’t normally see them in PUGs so what do you expect, Dani?
They started getting the hang of it later. I feel spirit secondaries are useful in pvp and not pve—unless you need CC for mobs—it’s better to protect the spirit if it can possibly get one shotted. Spirits are good at taking normal mob hits and in melee range you can heal them pretty easily. Make fun of spirits and me all you want, but the fact is that perma protection helps your group a lot, particularly in tough mob fights. I ran out of space so I didn’t film it but on that same run we almost wiped at the first group of mobs after Dulfy and the gate (ascalonian fractal). After that I switched back to stone spirit and we didn’t have an issue and ended up beating the captain on our first try. Versus the mobs leading up to the final arena, I was dropping spirits basically in the middle of the fight.
Durz used three spirits in the final molten facility boss and I have film of that as well. You’d be surprised how long the buff stays up, even if the spirit dies, and it was really pretty straightforward on how they helped: swiftness keeps you out of aoe rings and protection keeps you safe. Although I was in melee range the whole fight, many players prefer to range bosses like that in PUGs.
Also, no mention of my reaction time using whirling defense in the first clip? And no props for a tutorial on how to escape a thief? Noooo. Let’s just make fun of spirits. You guys are lame sometimes IMHO. Don’t expect any more videos from me.
“Rangers can’t do Fotm 30+” – I just did that yesterday.
“Rangers can’t use spirits” – I do.
“Whirling defense sucks” – Use it actively like I did in the first clip and being stationary isn’t an issue.
“How do you escape from a thief’s burst?” – Frost trap / greatsword / swiftness
That’s all I got. Now go home, you’re drunk!

Tooltip is clear. People are just not understanding what they are reading. That’s all. How does last player standing translate to last player holding at end of match? It doesn’t.
You likely have a few people that think it does, they then go around saying that’s how it is done, and everyone else believing them.
In the States “last one standing” is a figure of speech used, sort of hyperbolically, to describe the winner of a competition.
rangers as a class was created in 24h, don’t be surprised to have useless traits, pets, weapons, elite skills, utilities.
Interesting that you have so much in depth knowledge of how anet made this game. You must be a dev.
Cool stuff, Xsorsus, as always.
@Ayden: That’s a lot like how I play in strikeforce. Zerg players, take note.
Consider a wolf. The wolf would both fear and immobilize. Usually an immobilized person can dodge, right? If said person is also feared, then the guy cannot dodge. That possibility is at least interesting to think about. I don’t often use this trait, though, maybe someone can show us a cool way to use it?
I made this short video today demonstrating why I love whirling defense and spirits in dungeons. I wish I could have included more fights but I only have so much space on my SSD. I need to buy another hard drive, I think, if I’m going to keep making these videos. Please, let me know what you think.
*There’s a few other clips in there demonstrating pet shielding and a little bit of WvW (including thief evasion). Enjoy!
Well, just to be clear, that interview was over a year prior to release. If you watch demos from then, pets were in a terrible state. There was no way to control them (literally) and they sort of randomly ran around the map. It was really alpha. I think at that time rangers had a slot skill called camouflage (10s stealth so long as you stay in place), however, standing still with stealth was decided to be next to useless and running around with it was too thief like so they changed it to Hide in Plain Sight and a couple limited versions of stealth like “Guard” and the jaguar’s stealth attack.
Yeah, knights is a solid spec. Grats for rocking ranger and having fun!
I should record myself destroying people wearing all rares.
Set it and forget it? Yeah, right, that’s not at all how we play our profession, particularly beastmaster. Also, no ranger pet has both tons of CC and tons of damage.
Hm, if all that you’re saying is true, this is a very interesting problem.
I was DC’d three times from JQBL in the span of about one or two hours. Before this, the last DC I experienced was in LA karka land.
You have one of the highest DPS builds there assuming your cat stays up. I might suggest 30 in MM for signet of the beastmaster along with signet of stone. Plus, swap to a drake. Drakes have blast finish, hit hard for their toughness, and will give your cat the rest it needs. Another good choice is red moa for the lpng duration fury. I’m often the only one granting fury. Finally, clerics gear with healing power runes (zerk trinkets) is good for a bit more of a healing role. I tend to run that gear if there’s more zerk players in the group than I’m comfortable with.
Don’t get me wrong, 5 zerk is doable and probably optimal but few—if any—PUGs will be able to pull that off without getting frustrated. I PUG a ton of dungeons. I’ve never been kicked for using spirits either; to prove their efficacy I will post a video showing me using spirits in a group in various dungeons, including Arah. I already have clips of Arah, Molten Facility, and I think something else.
I use spirits for any encounter without massive AoE in dungeons. I use storm spirit occasionally on bosses because I find that even if the spirit goes down, I still have plenty of swiftness until I can cast it again.
Arah: Crusher boss – put spirits in corner and use the swiftness to move out of way of hammer and the frost for 70% damage. Spirits worked great in Arah and Molten Facility.
I think you’re overfly fond of defending genuinely problematic and lackluster mechanics/abilities. The usefulness of a swiftness-granting spirit against an encounter with frequent immobilizes and cripples is exaggerated (not to mention the frontal range of the hammer attack that’ll destroy anything in its path, including spirits), and this 70% damage figure you’re using is sheer fantasy – the frost spirit certainly does not grant a 70% damage increase.
Yeah, it’s 7%, clearly that was a typo. No need to get all upset over a typo. But, yeah, go ahead and call me a noob or whatever. I don’t really care if you miss out on 4 utilities or not, play how you want. That’s the beauty of this game.
Long live T1 and the three greatest servers ever known to a small subset of the population of Earth (exactly 15 people) who enjoy wvw. You guys rock.
Meh, a lot of people run generosity/purity and it has a similar proc rate. Versus a guardian it’s pretty good to rip off protection. If I use that sigil, I put it on axe and it seems to work fine. To be honest, I’d run SoR and take nullification over sigil of generosity. I could be wrong, but fights with guardians tend to drag out so that proc rate isn’t too bad if it gets two or three rips in a fight. Are there better sigils? Yeah probably but it’s fun, is pretty decent, and with that price you can’t really beat it. Generosity is 6 gold whereas nullification is, what, 10 silver? But, yeah, it’s not like a requirement to fight guardian. There’s tons of ways to build and you can use tons of sigils to win.
(edited by Chopps.5047)
Oh and Winters Bite, dont forget that
Well, that’s true, you can’t catch an escaping ranger. We might not be the fastest but we are definately the most slippery. Besides maybe a thief, dependin on the specs.
Sigil of nullification
I see this bug sometimes when calling back my pet. It makes me wish I could call back my pet and then choose to reposition it within 600 units.
WvW is filled with scrubs. Any decent player with almost any profession will consistently stomp fwiw.
@Waage
So what you’re saying is you’re never up at 2 am?
One clover in 100 attempts just isn’t possible. You mean you went 0 for 10 on the 10 clover recipes? That sucks but isn’t terribly unusual. You should have got a bunch of T6 mats back from missing a lot.
Also, when you willingly roll the dice and lose, take responsibility for losing. This isn’t a fused ticket. It’s mystic clovers. Anet has always left it the same. Many people have legendaries (myself included) and have taken data to know that, basically, 0 for 100 rolls is less likely than mystic forging a precursor.
So we finally have a use for these?
Holy hell… How many in total? Give me some :’(
So if that is all of your badges, that’s 250 each stackx30 room in each storage tab x3 storage tabs so you have 22500 badges right there. May i ask what rank you are?
140
As soon as I saw rank 140 I thought “I bet this dude streams”.
Eh, not really. I have dungeon armor from every dungeon. Perhaps legendary armor but not ascended. I value my free time. Yet, I suppose if it’s time gated in some way, I’d be cool with it.
I just hope the wvw infusions work on the other ascended items we already farmed for
They use infusion slots from normal ascended gear, you’re good!
Also they will cost a combination of both laurels and badges (at a discounted laurel cost) but we’re also adding more WvW achievements to the achievement categories to make it easier for WvW players to earn their laurels doing nothing but WvW.
A combination of laurels and badges? Why does everything in this game have to be gated when it comes to ascended gear?
I have guildies who have been saving up badges for ascended, hell, I’ve been saving up badges for ascended. We’re what this measure is supposed to stop, I guess, but it’s unnecessary. The only gate that should exist is the acquisition of badges. I have a guildie who has put 2000 hours or so into WvW, and virtually nothing into PvE, and they have 13000 badges. Do they not deserve to get something out of their 13000 badges? So what if they get the gear immediately? PvE players have had this gear since November.
Even laurels are annoying to WvW-only players, because many of them (I’d say 30-40% at least) require you to do at least some PvE to complete them.
C’mon Anet, I’ve waited 6 months for ascended in WvW, and now you’re going to make me wait at least another month or two to farm laurels in order to be on the same level as players who have had this gear since November? This is just as outrageous as adding the gold cost to exotic gear in WvW, when PvE players doing dungeons MAKE gold while getting exotics, whereas we have to spend the gold we make and the badges we make?
I was excited about this update until now, too.
I’m level 30 FOTM and big into both PvE and WvW. People in PvE max out their berserker gear (for the most part). Personally, I still don’t have ascended for most of the builds I use in WvW for my ranger. Just run exotics, you’ll be fine. Almost every battle in wvw is decided based on timing and positioning, not on who’s got ascended and who doesn’t. Ascended is just there to make people feel like there’s a gear progression, you know, the grinders out there. In reality, a ~10% bonus on a few pieces of gear just, it’s almost inconsequential.
How much you want to bet the best guilds and pvp players could wear rare stats and still beat average players fully decked out in everything ascended?
Easy: stop doing world bosses because they aren’t fun anymore?
I heard Canach started listening to emo and hanging out with venom spiderman.
P/D? It’s hard to imagine someone isn’t disappointed when seeing that.
Think you should look at some of the pics i put up from my toons especially my mes that has all cof gear which includes 5 different weapons that i farmed in 3 days.
Dont get me wrong i do like groups when its me and 3 zerk warriors and a mes since i can get my daily revive done in one run sometimes.
My server has already figured out you dont need the so call perfect group wonder how long until others do.
You are taking a party slot while doing nothing. Not because you are a thief, because a D/D thief can contribute decently to a cof p1, but because you’re just a ranged kitten using the worst weapon set the class has to offer in PVE.
You get your daily revive because your groups aren’t really full zerker (if they were, they’d kick you at the sight of the pistol almost instantly, the fact that they aren’t kicking you is evidence that they are lacking experience in the game and in speedruns) and you contribute absolutely no damage whatsoever. You’re not even doing half of the damage of a shout warrior in full tank gear and traited for healy shouts. No wonder they die at the slave driver if they melee it and it doesn’t die fast.
You might feel smug being a thief joining these groups but anyone who has a clue about these runs knows that running as 4 men without you would be the exact same thing as running with you.
You are a freeloader.
Fun fact: my warrior/mule’s name is Skullcrusher. It’s a shame I snagged that name for a mule, no?
Lawl, <3 rav, BG strategy on reset night was bonkers; they must really not like us.
Actually lately I’ve been farming CoF1 with 3 wars, me on mesmer, and 1 thief.
Thief breaks door before effigy faster than warrior.
makes the run about 40 secs to 1 min shorter, since they crit for a lot also.
I’ve long advocated substituting one thief into the group for a warrior but I get laughed out of the room. I also believe one ranger could be surprisingly effective in certain encounters (in terms of speed runs).
Fwiw I run ranger solely in dungeons and do quite well in PUGs and have speed run experience.
ANET rocks! Do you guys sleep?
@xev
Nope, my spirits don’t die versus the crusher because I know where to place them. Swiftness has saved people many times as they wait for a condition clear and then manage to move out of the way at the last second. Swiftness is extremely undervalued in boss fights in general. Durzlla used storm spirit with me versus the final two molten facility bosses and it really helped the team being able to run out of red circles easier.
Finally, I often use stone spirit and frost spirit. It’s not a banner (I only play ranger so comparing other buffs to spirits is irrelevant for me unless it’s a theorycrafting kind of thing), no, but it’s +7% for five players with permanent protection. In the Ascalonian Fractal yesterday, level 30, we had a couple downies vs the mobs on the path to the arena. I switched to stone spirit and we were golden.
For how much I defend spirits, 1000 other people say things that are just flat out wrong about them (like the crusher destroying them which only happens if you are foolish with their placement). So why don’t you try it?
Easy: because foolish players will kick someone just for bringing a spirit. Heck, I got kicked from an Arah pug yesterday for dodging grubs. They said you can’t dodge grubs. :/
Over 1,5k h played on ranger, dungeon master done only with ranger, 33 fotm lvl on ranger. Noone ever said bad word about ranger in dungs to me, not to mention kicking or not inviting.
Congrats, I wish there was more of us out there.
I feel like it is probably the build you are running. I have never been kicked from a dungeon or fractal. Honestly, I’ve kicked other rangers, more than any other profession simply by asking them a couple questions about their build and if they don’t pass, boot. If your reply is, “I really don’t know how this build works” or “I’m using spirits”, instant boot.
I feel like I should qualify this with my credentials because literally everyone but Durz, myself, and a few others avoid spirits due to their preconceptions. I have a massive 1764 hours on ranger (borderline no lifer), have played over 350 dungeons (not counting individual fractals), and I have full sets of armor from every dungeon and am now picking up a couple extra sets. I just played level 30 FOTM, used spirits where it made sense, and got an incredibly lucky exotic drop. I play ranger almost exclusively. My warrior is my mule.
There is a reason Anet keeps buffing health of spirits with a few slight tweaks and I think part of that is because Anet feels spirits are undervalued. I feel the same way.
Phantasm Mesmer and you can kill any Bunker ranger (unless he runs :P) if you know what you are doing.
Why are you telling people that?
I think you are the only Ranger running Axe/axe lol
