I agree with OP. I didn’t read through the entire thread, but I agree with the initial post. So many people in pvp like to play the blame game for their loss. They want to play the blame game for their low rating and/or low tier rank. It’s time people look at their own contribution to the team and come to terms with their own level of skill. I lose a lot. I think to myself that I could have done this or that better. I think it’s time we people took responsibility for their losses. That sentence “you guys didn’t do this or that…” or “my team is full of r-word” in map chat when you lose mid in the first group fight is, imo, childish. It’s like a child who hasn’t learned sportsmanship and responsibility yet so he/she lashes out at the people they are on a team with. They think I could have won this point if I were with better players. But you have to acknowledge that you are on this team because you are a little more, or a little less, just as good as these people. The matchmaking system is working.
This community is much smaller than other pvp communities. I would like to sportsmanship be a thing in spvp. I really would like to see sportsmanship brought back to the term “gg” when you see it in team chat. And I think the first step is accepting that we contribute to our own losses, as well as wins. In any case, I like the mmr system and I trust it to place me where I belong. Whichever tier that may be.
Every loss I’ve had has a perfectly reasonable explanation, that doesn’t make it any less frustrating.
And honestly I think people that got lucky in placement that haven’t actually seen what it’s like to play below 1k should be telling others what it’s like.
I don’t understand why it’s so frustrating to some people. If it’s not your career, if your livelihood doesn’t depend on it. If you’re playing gw2 for fun, I really don’t get the frustration part. And ideally, with perfect mmr you should be losing half of all your matches. Win rate should be 50/50. Only one team can win. it’s either gonna be you or them. You win some, you lose some. That’s all there is to it.
Because it’s not fun… Is that really so hard to understand? Yes, I play games for fun. Losing games where there was nothing I could do to change the outcome is not fun. It is frustrating. I don’t really understand how you can not get that…
I really can’t. I think it’s funny honestly that there are people that genuinely feel like that. That is the epitome of being a sore loser and a poor sport. I understand why professional gamers feel frustrated and upset by a loss. It’s their career. Their money and reputation is at stake. But for the majority of players, it’s really just great character flaw. And I’m competitive. I do want to win and try my best to. And I get wanting to make it to the top of the ladder. I’d like to get up there also. But poor sportsmanship ruins good matches, in any game and sport.
That made no kind of sense at all. If you’re the kind of person that has so little going on that losing five games in a row because someone got kittened off and quit is fun then I sincerely hope you retain that feeling. Or never stop drinking.
For the rest of us. Us normal people I mean, losses are frustrating. It has nothing to do with sportsmanship, just because something is frustrating doesn’t mean you go act like a kid and throw a fit. You can be a good sport even if it’s frustrating. Unless you’re 8 years old of course.
So I think your giant character flaw is that you can’t seperate between being frustrated and acting out. For us adults they’re not mutually exclusive and I hope you learn that or you can easily end up destroying your life over nothing.

Now imagine what it’s like when matchmaking screw you over in placement and you’re stuck in bronze with 90% people like that…
Depends on how your placement goes. If it goes well I suppose it would be fun. If not, do yourself a favour and pass on this one.

But why would the system put all the bad players in the same team and all the good in the other for hundreds and thousands of games? I mean, according to you, the system can’t even know who is good and who is bad. You are basically saying, matchmaking doesn’t exist and never existed, because it is all rng. But if its all rng, it will be the same for all players in the long run. Because rng doesn’t give any advantages or disadvantages to anybody.
The system can’t judge who is good and who is bad, it’s not designed for that. It’s designed to judge am entire team so it would work great for full premades, but for individuals it is crap.
Still waiting for an expert answer to this. Considering every game can be carried, there are no bad teammates at any rating, losing is always your own fault etc
You dont seem to get it do you?
Ofcourse there are bad teammates. But they end up on both teams. If u get unlucky with your teammates 1 game, you get lucky the next.
That means that in the long run the only differentiating factor in your series of rated games is…you.
Add to that that there are players (like Drazeh for example) who started at 1500 after placement and ended up above 2000 1 day later.
Uhm no it doesn’t. By your logic it’s only wintrading which means you stay at the same spot.
So the only difference is…me? Great! Please teach me how to carry in the following situations:
1. You hold mid and close, 1 enemy goes to your close, 1v1s the guy deffing it and then 3 guys leave mid to deal with him and all 3 stand on the point waiting for capture. Meanwhile you’ve gotten kittened trying to hold mid, even though you survived for 30 seconds against 4 people, you died. How do I carry this?
2. Your team loses the first teamfight and then run to mid 1 by 1. How do I carry this?
3. Your teammates are unable to 2v1 the enemy team. How do I carry this?
4. The situation I already described, your teammates ignore all other points and rush into 4 enemies standing at your close one at a time. How do I carry this?
5. Your teammates will happily ignore point capture to chase kills and will even stand outside the cap zone autoattacking a downed player. How do I carry this?
6. Enemy team has 3+ DH that instagib your teammates. How do I carry this?
7. Your team has 3 power warriors. How do I carry this?
8. People spread out to 2 far, 2 mid and 1 close. You lose the first teamfight 2v4 and the enemies then rotate to their close and take out the people there. 2 people get angry and go afk. How do I carry this?
9. Your teammates get soloed by Svanir. How do I carry this?
10. Two teammates are constantly trying to rob treb from each other and that’s all they do all game. How do I carry this?
Hi.
You’re obviously an expert. When the enemy team has 4 players standing at our close and my team runs there one by one after ressing, how do I carry that? Especially since the score from kills alone can’t be beaten by capping other points?

Feel yah bro. I think the best course of action is give up on s5 and wait for s6 and hope you get lucky in placememt. If that fails wait for s7 and so on. At some point you’ll be allowed to have fun I hope. Good luck.

Again, can you point it out? I still don’t see any blaming at all.
U state you are 850 rated yet still better than a player that more than doubles your rating. Therefor insinuating that the system is faulty in determining skilllevels.
= U blame the system
Well based on that I can safely assume you don’t actually know what kind of players we have at 850. And judging by your tone you seem like the kind of person that only talks in /t with caps on, as well as being the guy that sends angry whispers after losing a 1v1.
And now here you are, lucking out in placement and finally it’s your time to call people noobs and be obnoxious with impunity right? Not so. Also, sad.
I’m sorry, can you point out to me where in my post I am “playing the blame game”? I can’t see that I’m blaming anyone to be honest.
And I’m sitting steady at 850. Not ashamed at all either, I’m way better than you for example
So u ask me to point out where u play the blame game? And you follow it up by a sentence where u basicly blame the system for you being lower rated than me?
Imho shifting the blame is a sign of a weakminded individual.
Again, can you point it out? I still don’t see any blaming at all.
You can’t carry every game, that’s just braggy BS. And you lose twice as much as you gain by winning, kind of eternal treadmill.
Like I keep saying, this system would work for premade teams, it doesn’t work for individuals in a random group. They have to find a way to gauge skill based on individual performance because this right now is crap.
U are playing the blame game.
What about accepting youre not as good as you think you where?
The impact you have goes down once you are close to the MMR where you belong. So if u struggle to carry games at 1300 u probably belong there.
I’m sorry, can you point out to me where in my post I am “playing the blame game”? I can’t see that I’m blaming anyone to be honest.

Just had a game where the enemy team had 4 of their guys standing on our close.
My team rushed in there 1 by 1.
At the end of the game I lost rating.
Why? Is that somehow my fault?
System needs to include rating gain for individual performance. Playing my heart out yet losing the game and subsequently losing rating although I did everything right is disheartening.
The current system is great for premades and full teams. For single queues in random teams it’s really bad. I would be much more motivated to play well if my own performance determined ratings and so would most people I think. Leading to far better games and less “carry/get carried”
Individual ratings based on your own performance would be a huge motivator for me at least. Right now I don’t even feel like playing at all.
Starting at 0 isn’t much fun either. Same thing happens ig you’re unlucky plus it’s so frustrating to be paired with people that have never pvped in any game ever.
There just needs to be an individual rating system where rating loss/gain is not solely decided by win/loss because it’s outside your control and it’s not a team you choose.
They aren’t incorporating any personal performance metrics. It’s all your rating vs your opposing teams rating that determines it. Don’t spread misinformation.
Nothing I said is even remotely related to that.
Ended up in T3 bronze too. Haven’t spammed games so still there, I can usually do three or four before the frustration gets to me. This system is just silly, why am I being judged on the actions (or lack thereof) of others? Quite often I’ll be in a game where even if I play close to perfect I still can’t carry and change the outcome myself if the enemy team has semi-competent players.
Kinda resigned to being stuck here for now… watching 4 people stand at a point together to cap while spamming in caps in /t. Maybe in s6 I’ll get lucky in placement and will be allowed to have fun as well.
Moving is only luck. This system is not designed for teams of 5 randoms, they need a system to determine individual skill or contribution. Playing like a god and losing means you still lose rating even if there was literally nothing you could have done about it.
Very demotivating, I don’t see any point in playing any more.
How are they going to handle people placing later in the season. Win 10 games and get a top slot automatically. Anyone coming in later than halfway through the season should be hard placed at 1200 starting or at least outside of platinum rank.
No need.
By putting a player into any 10 random games you can draw the data necessary to place a player. Placement isnt based purely on win/loss either, as far as I can tell, which is smart. Performance (scoring) is a key factor. This is good because the system can tell you have skill in the game independent of your teammates, and in fact compared to them.
Well that’s complete crap. You can be the best contributor on your team and still have the lowest score.
Pretty sure he meant his own teammates telling him to kill himself.
I’ll clear up one myth right now: Mesmers have condi cleanse. It’s through shatter. I main Mesmer and if I’m up against a Necro I can play in a way that let’s me shatter 12 times in a row with continuum split.
So no, dropping a few conditions and then assume “that will kill them” or that they will “jump around in agony” is wrong, I can cleanse everything you throw at me just by spamming shatters if I need to and the conditions will be cleansed regardless of your dodging.
I’d say in general you’re gonna have a really hard time but picking the real Mesmer is not your main prob. If you’re running the cookiecutter build most of your stuff is aoe anyway which will take care of the clones for you. Your main problem is that you’re a sitting duck with no defense or much cc (you have 3 in total iirc). Not only that but waiting until you’re low to go into shroud = bad idea, that’s pretty much my queue to go ahead and Moa you and laugh at how surprised you seem that your shroud didn’t save you.
Anyway, point is that you can’t beat a good Mesmer 1v1 (at least not with the standard build) and that is not your purpose anyway.
No.
Get lucky on your placement matches and you get High gold to platinum or Even Legendary.
This is the big flaw in the system.
But if a Bronze tier player gets lucky and ends up in Plat he will drop down fast once he restarts playing. The system is working if people keep playing their matches.
Not necessarily. Look at these two examples:
1.) Bronze player in legendary that can be carried by 4 people who are good
OR
2.) Platinum player in silver who got unlucky with placement matches and have to carry 3 or 4 people.
Which situation is more beneficial to the player?
The error in your argument is that you’re arbitrarily asserting the player “rank” before placement. But placement IS the determination of the players level, including where they end up by the end of the season.
Regardless of how “hard” it is for this person to move this way or that, averages will have you move in the direction of your relevant skill level as it relates to all other average joes playing the game. The fact that performance in specific areas outside of pure win/loss means this will happen even faster. That is, of course, so long as you’re as good as you think you are (or worse than you think you are, as the case might be).
This would be true if you either queued as a five man team or it was a balanced 1v1 league. Since neither of those are true what you’re saying is pointless, your own skill doesn’t matter for your rating because there’s a limit to how much you can carry bad teams.
Season 5 was a bust sadly, wait for season 6.
As a Mesmer having access to interrupts and dual moa unbeatable eles do not exist for ME and therefore they are beatable for everyone else just l2p because logic (lol)
inb4 this thread gets shut down for threats on animal abuse…
It’s not a threat.
Interesting discussion. It is easier to fall then climb. Good and above players help there is no argument. However, there is also no argument that a single good player is going to carry the rest of the field. Easiest way to look at it is if you spell team. There is no “I” in team meaning a single person.
All any of them had to do was go play WoW and some arena’s and see how it is done. This isn’t anything like trying to re-invent the wheel.
Their rating system is basically the same as wow though, except it’s applied to groups made up of randoms.
No matter how well you play you’ll still lose rating if you get put on a bad team. That makes very little sense for a random join game mode.
This is completely wrong, the rating system is entirely based on having luck with teams in placement matches and so ranks become pointless.
“Oh you can just fight your way to the top”.
No. You can’t. You can’t carry your teams for that many matches. And you will NEVER catch up to the people with good placement. Not ever. So long s5, better luck next time.Yes you can carry . My placements matches were 4v5 and I lost the first 2. I ended up in a scrub division that I could easely win 1v2s and carry all the way to Plat. Now the matches are more even. If you get unlucky and get placed low you can easely win 1v2 or even 1v3
No. You can’t. When you have teammates that go mobbing, when you have people that down themselves on confusion, when you have people that can’t rotate, that will chase enemies back to base rather than cap a point or stay 4 people at the point to get the cap score, you can’t carry that.
And the reward for most pointless post ever goes to…?
Obviously people that lucked out in placement will be happy. People that didn’t won’t. That’s not even the point.
They designed a system that works for 5man premade groups and implemented it for solo and duo queues. Honestly…?
This is completely wrong, the rating system is entirely based on having luck with teams in placement matches and so ranks become pointless.

Luck in first 10 matches = ArenaNet lets you have fun
No luck in first 10 matches = No fun for you
I’m playing with people that let a Mesmer self-ress because they get fooled by illusions It’s so inspiring to play with these challenged, brave individuals.
Maybe next season I will have better luck in placement and Anet lets me have fun too
Nah man this is great. I’m at 869 rating! woop woop! I was a gladiator for 3 seasons in TBC, but now I get to play with all these amazing, brave people!
70% of my games i got AFK or leaver when we start lose.
Should’ve rushed B man.
I kick my cat.
This is on you Anet. Kitty doesn’t have long, you better fix this.
They don’t know how to gauge player skill. They made a system for premades then implemented it for randoms. Just wait until next season and hope you get better luck during placement matches.
So you lucked out in placement and you’re here to tell people that didn’t that the system is awesome? Sweet. Thank you for that.
Thief is actually a good target for a rev with the right build. You can pretty much completely neutralize them or outright kill them if they’re bad. Not gonna bother showing the build because it’s not on metabattle so I’ll get flamed to heck for it.
I wonder how you do that, you can’t oneshot them, you can’t follow up if they know what they do and they easily outdamage you.
Ofc if they are bad but let’s talk about equally skilled players else the discussion is pointless. So could you explain me how on earth the second hardest rev counter (after condi mes) is an easy target for you?
I’ll give you a hint first: Stand in the fire.
I think duo, trio, quadro or even penta queues are fine.
Just because I don’t have any friends to play with myself doesn’t mean I want to rob others of the fun of doing that. If the population was large enough to not pair tris up with singles and so on that’d be cool but I understand if that’s not possible.
As long as I don’t have to face premade after premade then go nuts with it rly. I’d play a premade myself if I could too.
1. Clap at Guardians
2. Provide afk buffs
3. Die
Nodachi is the greatsword
Katana is what we would call a kitten sword because it’s long enough to function as a greatsword and was commonly used two handed as shields were not a major part of samurai techniques.
Already made a thread like this, about using ratings gain as a reward for playing well rather than having it just be win/loss. I think it would be more effective if it was incentivized.
what you do is you bring a support tempest friend and stick to him, then you should be fine and make impact.
Isn’t that kinda universal for every class though…? “Oh you need to be two and one of those two has to be a support” doesn’t seem all that fair to me.
The system would be great for premades. Doesn’t work for solo queue players where how well you play doesn’t matter.
I got unlucky with teams in placement and I know I’m gonna be bronze for the next month. I get a good game, then 3 warrs on my team, a good game, then 3 rangers, a good game etc.
I realize I’d have to be extremely lucky to get out of bronze. How well I play etc, doesn’t affect my rating. If my team loses, I lose rating. I can play like a god, I still lose rating.
It’s just about powering through it and hope the next season placement will be luckier for me. It is pretty discouraging and demotivating though but oh well.
They’ve made a ranked system that’d worked for 5 queue teams and are using it for pugs so can’t expect much tbh.
It’s just their matchmaking. If you win 2 in a row you lose 2, win 3, lose 3 etc. If you have good luck with teams in placement you’ll have fun. If you don’t, no fun for you.
Guardians are amazing right now
As necro I have no idea… They have cleanse, heals, direct damage, blocks, stability, immunities. I just asked this question in necro forums because I have no idea what to do against them at all.
