- MIRAGE STANDING IN THE GIANT CIRCLE OF DEATH!
Mirage does Dodge
…1…2…3…- STILL STANDING IN THE GIANT CIRCLE OF DEATH!
Mirage = rez plz!TOPKEK! :P
Actually given how big some of the AoE skills of other classes look, this part does have me worried.
Dodge for movement is one of those small things that is usually taken for granted. On one hand freecasting and moving while blurring is appealing, on the other hand the ability to dodge jump, dodge out of aoes and dodge into an enemy for shatter are very hard to let go of.
Yeah the small things like longer cooldowns all around due to no alacrity, old problems of shattering at distance and slow illusions, no permanent movement speed bonus, no F5 to double up skills, no Chronophantasma, no ability to dodge-jump or move dodge in general (kiting could be more difficult)… that’s a lot of tradeoff.
Also unlike Chrono where you can easily ignore Shield and use any other weapon, I struggle to visualise Mirage working efficiently without Axe given that retargeting skill and mid/close range damage.
I’m still looking forward to it because thematically it is what I want from mesmer, but it’s a struggle to give up all those good bandaid fixes that Chrono provides.
I’m really struggling with the idea of giving up Time Marches On.
Don’t. There is not one game mode where Mirage will perform better.
It looks like it could perform better in pvp and even small scale wvw/roaming.
My guild is feeling pretty solid about using mirage as DPS support parts of a 20-man comp
Interesting – I’m struggling to think how to make the most of clones surviving long enough for the ambush mechanic, but I know you must have a solid plan in place.
For WvW stuff just ignore that clones exist. Between the weapon skills, traits, and “ambush” skills that mirage has access to, it’ll be a powerful aoe condie applying class that has good survivability and access to mechanics like boon strip and AOE stability.
Will the self ambush damage be enough? I suppose Chrono doesn’t give much on that front either, so Mirage should be better. Ambush into Axe 3 into shatter could be good if executed quickly. I dunno – I’m more of a small scale/solo player.
I’m really struggling with the idea of giving up Time Marches On.

Well I still enjoy chrono even after all the nerfs, even if sometimes the shatter spam gets a bit boring.
So if mirage is at least as good as chrono is right now after it gets nerfed then I’ll enjoy it.
pvp and wvw players are going to whine like hell though – going to be so much salt next weekend which will lead to the gutting of traits/skills.
I’m really struggling with the idea of giving up Time Marches On.
I really want to make a Warrior right now…
That new grieving stat looks insane – may be better than viper.
I’d wait tbh.
Could you share the details on this stat?
Well I exaggerated when I said insane as it simply replaces Viper’s +condi duration with ferocity (so Power, Condi Damage, precision, ferocity). It should be better if playing hybrid going for some direct damage mind wrack spikes and condi burst, so more spike damage which may be better in wvw.
In any case it looks like good gear.
Fingers crossed that “other mechanic” is “enemies drops target”
My god that would be funny if it was a core mechanic of mirage. Though it seems Axe 3 has a base 10s cooldown which is nice.
But on the other hand it would be really annoying to have to play the retargeting minigame even more than usual. :/
Just noticed: Look at the Vigor Tooltip
:o Ok that’s different.
I’m a little sad on one hand about losing movement dodge because I like the aerial animation on asura.
But on the other hand if we can free cast while dodging that will be a bonus.
And then the other negative as said is how to get out of aoe beyond blur and run – essentially it will be similar to moving while hitting F4.
Didn’t those clones execute that chain very fast, and all at the same time?
The only OP thing is the insane amount of conditions which people will whine about in pvp.
But in wvw it’s going to be negligable if clones continue to die when sneezed on.
kitten Shield. Tbh I never used it beyond occasional instanced pve – very boring with those blocks (which immediately say “hit me with unblockables”). Vastly prefer Torch and Focus.
Oh Axe/Focus is going to be sexy, same with Axe/Torch.
Oddly enough I’m also most hyped for Holosmith. Didn’t even consider the possibility that I might play engi again but this looks like so much fun!
Lack of new F skills is a shame – shatters don’t really fit thematically with this whole blend in idea, though comboing ambush into shatter will make for some disgusting condi burst in pvp. Though of course it will be nerfed before then.
And yeah I’m sceptical of the whole pretend to be a clone thing – but if they say like Axe 3 forces detargeting hopefully there could be more mechanics like that so that enemies have to constantly retarget you.
I wonder how effective it will be in pvp though. The damage looks solid and might be the main selling point, but I imagine most good players won’t be fooled by the trickery once they’ve learnt the tells.
Just clones it seems – they get ambush abilities when you enter mirage cloak (ie through dodging) where they can unload a huge amount of damage.
Axe 3 looks like ileap on steroids. I like the look of that.
On one hand it looks insanely powerful, on the other hand it looks like a total gimmick.
Not sure how well this “pretend to be a clone” will work in practice, but the clone ambush mechanics look insane for damage combined with shatters. Definitely going to see nerfs before release.
But on the other hand shatters are still there… it seems like a big mishmash. Fun but not quite sure what they were going for when comparing with other elite specs.
Oh kitten , deadeye next – he’ll get to mirage eventually. :/
Oh kitten, I’m already terrified of Spellbreaker… :o
Here we go, WP talking about Spellbreaker now…
That new grieving stat looks insane – may be better than viper.
I’d wait tbh.
Ele looks insane.
Ele looks like it might have got a lot of love this time.
Well tbh some classes look like they got what players want:
Necro gets mobility, but loses tankiness
Ranger gets ability to “stow” pet
Ele gets Sword and ability to specialise in one/two elements (and a million new skills according to WP…)
Warrior gets ability to say “kitten you” to casters
Thief gets rifle… (kitten I’m afraid of wvw roaming… that thing could make RF rangers look like kittens).
Engi, Rev and Guardian are weird ones, though I must admit Holosmith has me the most interested. The concept of creating holographic weapons and using them sounds really cool.

Ok based on this at 2:48
Axe confirmed and its melee
More stealth for some reason
Some kind of skill that made your illusions (and possibly Mirage itself?) teleport round the enemy and all attack at once.
Some skill that throws an arc of slow moving axes.
Some skill that makes a crystal that you run through to give you an effect and then appeared to throw a fireball(?) at the enemy
Dodge replaced by blur
They only showed clones, so no clones turning into Phantasms.
Most interesting is Some skill where you and two clones spin your staff around and fire a energy ball.
I hope WP shows what’s happening to Shatters – difficult to tell if they’re still there or changed.
The visual effects look cool, though I wonder if it will have that dps that is desired for pve.
lol I read the title and expected Warrior post. xD
I imagine things like Holosmith could have a nice amount of reveal to counter, and Spellbreaker could be a natural counter.
Edit: the annoying thing is Spellbreaker could end up being a better “mesmer” than core mesmer. :/
(edited by Curunen.8729)
Are they really adding more Stealth skills to Mesmer? Really? God kitten it.
They said camouflage – could be for example invisible while motionless or something, who knows. We’ll see soon enough.
In any case I’m not looking forward to fighting against a Spellbreaker – that could be more annoying than old lockdown/interrupt.
kitten , wtb class change please. :o
Can’t believe I’m saying that, but warrior/ele/engi and ranger elite specs all look awesome, if not more awesome than mesmer!
But I love the idea of blur dodge and deceptive melee play. Looking forward to the mind games.
I know you say 75 words or fewer but it’s difficult to cover everything.
+ve:
+Beautiful map – I always loved the aesthetic of places like Malchor’s Leap and Siren’s Landing uses the environment of Orr very well. Also the different god reliquaries such as Dwayna’s with the Flying or Lyssa’s with the Portals (and beautiful scenery) are fun to play. Nice combination of water and land, of vegetation and architecture.
+Excellent Jumping Puzzle – more of this type please. Not pull your hair out infuriating like Chalice of Tears.
+More Taimi dialogue is always good, and I enjoyed the Commander’s dialogue (as an asura).
-ve:
-As an asura I don’t really like being forced to join the Shining Blade. The secrecy seems a bit stupid from my point of view and I (from an asura perspective) don’t get why they uphold so much secrecy when there are bigger problems in this fictional world. They’re just a small bunch of humans. Tbh I’m a little tired of the human centric White Mantle vs Shining Blade/Kryta vs Gods story, but that’s a personal issue.
- The whole Lazarus thing seems like a side story, tying up loose ends. I didn’t quite get where all those horcruxes aspects came from.
I would also go either with Antitoxin or Berserker runes (I prefer Antitoxin to use the same set in wvw with Sweet Bean Buns).
Was thinking more on the lines of meditrapper.
At this point my personal biggest question is…
…Astralaria or The Shining Blade! xD
Only have enough resources to finish one precursor and respective gift before release (already have generic gifts ready), and I have no idea which one to go for. Going to totally depend on mirage vs chrono builds and which I prefer.
Shining blade!
Both ofc?
Both will take me another year and a throwaway alt to for HoT map completion to get a second gift of maguuma (I only have one character).
In that case, go with sword if the skins are both equally appealing to you and the difference in gold cost is not a concern (Astralaria currently costs about 2,950 gold, The Shining Blade about 3,500 gold).
Reason 1: it’s available as main and oh weapon to core mesmer and thus to every elite spec.
Reason 2: it is used by 5 core professions and thus beats axe with 4 core professions (and it’s always a mainhand weapon minimum, axe is not on revenant).
Reason 3: you have no idea if the mesmer axe spec will be fun for you to play (or meta on a more practical note). Nothing sucks more than having a legendary you can’t use while playing as chrono.
Reason 4: unlocking the sword skin allows you to use it on your offhand sword. Looks sweet.
As you said the best thing is to wait and see what builds emerge. I’m not making either precursor until knowing more about skills and builds.

Woah seriously?
That’s sad.
It’s going to summon a phantasm, broski.
No it won’t…
Confirmed or speculation?
There’s so many possibilities it’s difficult to say one way or another right now.
For example if that leak/rumour of all clones becoming phantasms or whatever is true (given that shatters should be replaced, maybe for skills that control phantasms or maybe creating these mirages), and if axe has an illusion generating skill, then it stands to reason that it could become a phantasm. But Axe may have no illusion generating skill, or it could simply be a clone and we retain shatters and that rumour be false. But that’s all my speculation.
Whatever the case we should hopefully find out a little bit in a couple of days – assuming they choose to reveal something about the new elite specs.
I like gold!
Also the lighting in Southsun is nice for screenshots.
I’m happy about that.
Actually my main concern is if mirage in general has too many ground targeting skills – I hate excessive ground targeting so I hope Mirage doesn’t have too much of it. At least with Chrono you can choose not to use wells and play “normal” shatter.

Tbh right now I’d hold off on making any legendaries until the expansion when we have the new elite specs with their new skills/themes and hopefully the remainder of the second wave of legendary weapons released.
That way you can make a fully informed decision base on which elite spec you prefer for your class and which weapon sets you prefer for a particular build.
For example I have no idea whether I’m going to prefer playing chrono or mirage and within that whether I’m going to prefer Sword or Axe. Hence I’m not making either Astalaria or the Shining Blade until all has been revealed, nevermind if they make an awesome Scepter, Greatsword or Focus legendary which I prefer.
Instead, have the generic gifts ready (ie gift of maguuma and mystic tribute for 2nd gen or the equivalent things for old legendaries) so all that remains is finishing a precursor collection (or buying one off the TP) and finishing the specific gift.

More elite spec details would be nice.
While the animation and visual effects are beautiful, I’m slowly beginning to dislike the actual model of this new sword – especially around the hilt area.
If it was a simple model, say like the Gold Fractal Sword, without all those spiky bits and fancy extra sharp edges where you could slice your own wrist off, I would make this without a doubt as it is perfect for mesmer.
But as Legendaries are all about aesthetics, I don’t like the look of the sword model. Which is good in one way because it means I can focus on finishing Astralaria, but a shame because I love the gold/purple illusion effects. :/
You do realize that the sword Aesthetic is based on the Shining Blade order Emblem which is derived from the sword technically, right?
Doesn’t make it look like something I’d personally want to hold. Being based on an emblem that represents a sword doesn’t make this sword itself look more comfortable/practical than say Whisperblade.
Not to say I place any value on reality in a fantasy game, but my character has a certain aesthetic which goes along the lines of elegant but practical, and that means avoiding the more… “flamboyant” weapon and armour designs.
Also I suppose being a diehard asura main, I don’t really care for the Shining Blade order (“cult”) and didn’t really appreciate being forced to join it in the story. So the symbol doesn’t mean anything to me as such the footfalls aren’t really my cup of tea.

I am editing this post because I figured out the trick, though I still believe the dev that created this achievement to be a sadist. You need to get 25 stacks of the debuff, then the hands will give alacrity instead, which makes this doable. Just stand by the door and afk until you have 25 stacks, then enter the fight.
Seriously? That’s… weird, but good to know thanks.
I spent ages trying to kite off the stacks and timing the breakbar while cooldowns spiralled into insanity. Didn’t realise what to do until reading about it on here.
lol, yeah I agree it’s not obvious at all. Probably the most difficult LS fight that I can remember in terms of figuring out what to do.
