Personally I’ve reached a point where I’m fed up with the pathetic lack of gear customisation in pvp. It’s too restrictive and doesn’t allow any creativity.

Agree, no clone on death traits.

The other day, I read a post in the PvP section. The poster was observing that when playing against the druid, occasionally he loses the druid as a target. And wonder if it was a bug or something.

Of course, the what he was observing was the “taunt” from the pet. (certain pets anyway.)

Then it occurred to me….. why don’t clones cast “taunt”. They are supposed to deceive our enemy’s? “Can’t see the forest from the tree’s.. kinda thing.” I know it will never happen, but I just thought it would be kind of a cool and very annoying gameplay element. Having 3 clones out, all casting taunt every 10-15 seconds.

I hope the next elite spec has such a mechanic for misdirection – illusions casting taunt (as long as it is an active skill) to force loss of target.

On second thoughts this build is way too glassy – you get wrecked by the slightest sneeze and with all the overpowered damage out there it is difficult to sustain long enough to deal damage.

Personally I’d wait for the next Living Story episode release when it should jump again (possibly over 20g/100 gems).

I meant buying gold with gems mate

Yeah that’s what I was saying – at the Living Story releases you could get over 20g per 100 gems compared to right now about 17 gold per 100 gems.

At Episode 3 release I converted 1600 gems and got over 360 gold. That is over 22 gold per 100 gems.

I clearly overestimated the slow on trap instead of daze and buffs to condi rev. That being said,

One problem now is due to needing healing power for RI, the poor selection of amulets in pvp is even more apparent.

I’ve sadly had to drop Viper in pvp for Sage amulet (still using Viper in wvw thankfully because it works there) as Viper in pvp is just pure suicide right now.

It’s almost like I’m being encouraged to bunker up rather than play more offensive with hybrid stats…

Would be nice to see a jewel system brought back to the amulets so I could spec Viper amulet with Sage jewel or something.

Some quick math though if you want to keep inspiration but not a healing power amulet:
PvE/WvW healing with 3 illusions: 1,448 (0.2). 36% loss is a 521 healing loss. The 285% increase to 0.2 means 0.57. With inspiration giving 300 healing power, that’s an extra 111 healing compared to before. The extra 175 healing power from a rune is also an extra 100 healing to a 0-3 illusion shatter. Doesn’t make up in full for the 521 loss but it might be enough for you. Now let’s look at bonus effects.

Rune of the grove creates an entangle effect every 90 seconds and has bonus protection. Damage reduction and the wtf surprise factor could work. Rune of water and flock both give bonus 755 (0.5) healing in a 600 radius when you use #6. Some nice team support. Water also has bonus condi clear while flock has a bonus bird attack that blinds. Rune of the guardian is 175 toughness, 100 healing power and 1.4 seconds of burn on block with that viper amulet. No ICD. If your condi clear fine, the 175 toughness is ~9% damage reduction which also means less healing power required.

So condi rune + sage amulet vs healing rune + the viper amulet you like. I personally think the condi duration heavily outweighs the condi damage when it comes to raw stats. It depends on which tier/MMR you are in but personally, I think you should try rune of the guardian. It’s a “jewels” worth of healing power and toughness. At low tiers most people just spam attacks. At higher tiers I’ve noticed ppl will still attack but then dodge the illusion summon. 400 bonus damage for every single one of those block is nothing to scoff at. Possibly bring scepter for more block and illusion spam.

Thank you for that analysis!

Yeah in wvw I can build some cele in to round out the stats, provide 1/3 crit chance and reasonable healing power so if Anet decided to apply the pvp nerfs to wvw then I’d still be fine.

I forgot about the extra 100 healing power per illusion shattered, which helps.

I tried the pure healing power runes but found condi damage was getting a bit low to be worth the benefit. If there was a healing power / condi damage rune set I’d try that.

Also unfortunately I don’t really like Shield or Scepter so usually building more around evades (BF, energy sigils) and stealth (torch) than blocks, so Guardian rune wouldn’t work well in my situation.

However I did stumble again upon the wonderful rune of the Revenant! I forgot how useful this rune was (I used to use it with fully traited mirror heal and it was great). More importantly it provides a rounding of stats that Cele does for me in wvw – it allows me to reach that 33.3% crit chance which I like to have – I have been using Sigils of Air with this as they proc quite often and I’m hitting on average 700 damage each time. The fury from Staff auto and iMage helps with these sigils. Best of all that 2s resistance is so clutch with Mantra of Recovery – it’s nice to have a safety net if condi bombed you can instantly proc it with power return and have a couple of seconds to decide how to manage the situation.

Yes unfortunately the rune only provides 60 healing power, but full shatters are healing over 1200 health which I’m getting comfortable with now.

Here’s the build:

And sadly I can’t play Viper together with RI anymore in pvp because the heal amount sucks.

It kind of relied on the sustained healing from RI to make up for the extreme glassiness. Now it is just pure glass with too slow damage and no sustain – it’s better to play zerker.

At least it’s still ok in wvw for now…

In pvp I haven’t quite found a decent build that I enjoy yet. Probably going to go back to Demolisher and power.

I get some heat for this, but really, you need to figure out how you want to play a mesmer, and what you wanna do before deciding on a build.

Me, I play a PU condition Mesmer, I MAY sometime switch to a more power based, but its gonna stay PU. Roaming, you REALLY need allot of stealth to get yourself out of sticky issues, in case you run across a small group just trying to gank roamers.

Just the other night, 5 man gank squad tried to kill me, my stealth, and blink got me out of it, then I trolled them, went back, found them, let them attack, then got away again.

As far as any build goes, never know with ANET, they will buff this, nerf that, so what works today may be broken tommorow.

Mesmer is like Anets love child, they wont break it trust

I guess you don’t remember the time from launch to the pre HoT June 23rd patch, especially things like broken phantasms.

Granted we’ve now had 18 months of good stuff, but anything could break next patch.

Depends which you find easiest out of Bell Choir and the Jumping puzzle.

I find Bell Choir very easy to max out (or get close to max) every time (depending on ping/lag of course) whereas I find the Jumping puzzle has higher chance of failure.

The only problem is how many rounds of Bell Choir you can take before getting bored – personally the same songs again and again start to do my head in and I can’t take it anymore… I don’t think I’ll be playing it beyond the achievement this year given I don’t think there are any new songs.

New Deadshot amulet is actually killer with Sharper Images – the bleed stacks are pretty kitten good with 54% crit chance, and in addition to Blinding Dissipation, Ineptitude and Scavenging Runes provides a surprisingly powerful condi build.

Only kicker is having to take a condi cleanse utility like Mantra of Resolve… or take Portal if you have a team to cleanse for you.

Yep I’ve played a wanderer build for awhile in PvP now and this amulet is exactly the same, just trading the toughness for vitality. If you’re running staff, try going old school (when all we wanted was illusionary elasticity fixed) with mirror images + phase retreat for some staff clone condi fun.

Yeah sadly the problem is losing condi cleanse from Inspiration is forcing me to use mantra of Resolve, and I always use Blink and nearly always use Decoy (unless playing fractals). I so wish I could swap Mass Invis for Mirror Images because that would be the best thing ever, but I can’t.

I do miss the instantaneous burst of F5+Mirror Images shatter combos but the sheer clone production from DE and IR gives full shatters pretty much all the time.

@Windwalker – yeah I agree with you regarding Inspiration. There’s nothing “Inspiring” about it other than Pyro’s wvw build. It’ll simply be taken due to having our two best condition removal traits (Mender’s Purity and RI) so as a selfish personal condition management traitline, barely anything to do with supporting/inspiring allies…

I don’t particularly want to go back to using Mantra of Resolve or similar utility for condition removal so will probably still be pigeonholed into using Inspiration anyway.

Oh my god Wintersday >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Halloween.

I can’t even articulate how much more fun Wintersday is. The minigames are so much more entertaining. I go out of my way to ignore the modern Halloween festival…

I know both events are based on the commercialisation of traditional observations at those times of year, however Halloween is so shallow and stupid to me because of the commercialisation. Sure it might have been good in the past ages as a day to pray for the dead, but now it is pure BS which I don’t understand (or refuse to understand).

Wintersday at least in game still has the positive themes of the traditional real life observations of being kind, generous and so on. I also prefer the lighter visual tone and cheerful in game atmosphere, the environment being all Wintry and snowy and the decorations.

I would love unpredictable AI on the level of an fps shooter, or even just as different as those class npcs in Hear of the Mists.

In addition I loved having downstate on those nightmare mobs (was it them? can’t remember) during the old living story – lack of stomping in pve also makes it extremely boring.

In summary – more unpredictable enemies, stomping/downstate in pve.

Stomping is just padding the mob with more HP in this case. One of the least interesting thing you could do to a mob. With enough DPS the stomp is a waste of time.

Stomping is fun to do and the lack of it in pve I find really boring. Would be nice to have npcs you need to Tele stomp or stab/invuln stomp.

Curunen, viper stats are generally useful for a variety of DPS builds. Having viper rings, amulet, accessories etc opens up options for condi engy, ranger, necro, mesmer, guard and ele. I have on occasion run condi ele in raids just for fun, while power ele does more damage it’s not terrible when conditions are required and it provides some nice might and fury.

Even fractals you won’t be turned away with a condi engy, ranger or necro and it’s a nice change of pace sometimes.

Thanks, it’s good to know I can create an alt and reuse the same ascended trinkets for fractals. I still don’t think I’ll ever touch Raids, but at least the option is there.

Viper Mesmer in WvW

in Mesmer

Curunen.8729

I should also add a few more points:

- I have never played nor likely will ever play a Raid, so I have no idea if this build works there. Best to test cheaper things first and get more advice from experienced Raid players. My pve is limited to fractals and open world.

- I do not recommend Viper for PvP outside of hotjoin. It is too glassy and lack of both Food and Antitoxin runes plus the extra sustain from cele trinkets makes it a suboptimal choice. It is only in WvW that this synergy is possible.

- I strongly believe this build is not overpowered in relative comparison with all major builds of every class in the game. It is very much a “jack of all trades” built for convenience and efficiency at gearing and designed to be medium risk medium reward. It may not be as glassy (read: “skillful” as interpreted by elitists) as Zerker, but you need to have some good skill both to kill and survive. It is by no means a braindead build.
You must be active, skillful and opportunistic to be rewarded – you can’t brainlessly delete people like power shatter or brainlessly survive like Dire/Trailblazer condi, but you have more margin for error on survival. I made this build because it is forgiving on survival and I care slightly more about survival than killing, however it has a high skill ceiling and allows more effort to pay off with bigger reward. If you understand that and play to it’s strengths (slower time to kill but more sustain) you can achieve good success in small and outnumbered fights.

I meant to put Viper Rings.

The amulet is the same as for wvw (cele) because no need to change. The trinkets and backpiece are also cele currently because that’s what I had, although with the new Petrified Sparking Wood and Black Ice Earring I’m likely to change those to Viper for more damage in PvE.

Edit – I should also say – save your Sweet Bean Buns for wvw. Don’t waste them in PvE as they’re totally unnecessary. Better to use cheaper and more offensive food.

Ok so here is the general build I use in wvw.
Bear in mind the gw2skills calculator has not been updated for the infusion slot changes among other things. I use full wvw resilient infusions netting extra 90 toughness and -18% damage from guards.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vhQQNAR8fl0nhy0YnawRNwtGLvGV9wesL75PEEHHaAkTPHA-TFyHAB8u/wSK/U+iKMuun5UCmoaAzr6DAPpgAAIAzX+Ifyn8lv8lvhO0hO0hO0uuQH6QH6QLFQfrBA-w

You can swap any weapon you like, but all of mine have exactly the same stats – Energy/Cleansing sigils, wvw resilient infusions and viper stats.

Utility is the Tuning Icicles (cheaper and should be available again from next week) and Sweet Bean Buns – these have recently skyrocketed in price however I’m sitting on many stacks of them I hoarded earlier in the year when it was ~15 silver. It should go down during the Lunar New Year festival, but that isn’t for another month and a half or so… Up to you if you want to spend ~50 silver per food now to test it out or use another food in the meantime.
But then you lose the benefit of -69% Immobilise/Cripple/Chill and -44% all other conditions. Can still play around that but it does make 1vX outnumbered fights a lot easier to manage.

And here is my pve build I use in fractals:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vhQQRArd8en0nBlph9fC2fCEgiFnj6MAGgFDtx2nEoOQX0GF-TVyHQBzRJIv2fYeq+MQlGK7kKAgnUQiUDYc6fWiysyBHArQFqQFqoiKqYvBEQABEgHEQABEQACBoYNA-w
I switch some traits and weapons depending on the situation, but for fractals I only change 5 pieces of armour (shoulders/chest/gloves/legs/shoes) and 5 trinkets (rings/earrings/backpiece) for a total of 15 infusion slots – fill those with +10 infusions and you’re good to go without needing to also change your weapons.

This build is expensive to gear and to run both in wvw and pve and it took some work for me to acquire the necessary gear and consumables. However I can say it is one of the most fun things I’ve played in this game.

If people moan at you, you can say “hey, no perplexity, no dire, no trailblazer, no PU…”.

It has more sustain than power shatter (though lacking the huge burst damage), but doesn’t run into harcounters like pure condi or struggle to chase enemies (especially if using greatsword).

I use viper with cele trinkets.

I will share my full build later and how I use it because I am posting from phone.

It is in my opinion great in solo/small scale and you can use any weapon combination you like. I frequently mix different weapon sets without needing to re-gear.

It can burst reasonably well, has good sustained and consistent damage application for a mesmer, and is surprisingly survivable using the cookie cutter meta of Inspiration/Illusions/Chrono.

I frequently use Greatsword + Sword/Torch and play like a sustained dps version of power shatter. Or if I’m using Staff + Sword/Torch I play to be elusive and annoying.

Other combinations can be Scepter/Focus + Sword/Shield – this one is really fun to control enemies although lacking the extra stealth from torch.

Utilities I usually go for are Blink/Mirror Images and Decoy with Mass Invis elite and traited Heal Mantra.

Another thing is it doesn’t have much in the way of hardcounters unlike pure condi ot power builds. You can continue to do decent power damage through resistance so don’t have to kite it out, and you don’t suffer from lack of sustained damage as when playing zerker/marauder.
The most difficult matchups I’ve had actually have been certain Druids, because of lacking the pure burst to finish them easily and they can build for a ton of sustain in wvw (I don’t know the builds of rangers very well but from experience fighting them) and evade spam thieves because landing shatters is tedious…

I haven’t had much problem with condi enemies due to the runes and food I use – in combination with Time Marches On it nullifies most of Chill, Cripple and Immobilise and reduces durations of other conditions – which is a safety net behind the clear of Restorative Illusions, The Pledge, Cleansing Sigils, Menders Purity… yeah conditions don’t stick much.

Good god, if you touch phase retreat there will be riots on here – even more than when they “accidently” changed Distortion into an evade… and I will be really kittened off.

Phase Retreat makes staff – without it staff is unbelievably weak.

Also where is the mobility? I count 4 skills:
- Phase Retreat
- iLeap
- Blink
- Portal

And F5 if you consider wasting that for mobility…

Two of those require using MH sword and staff. The other two require slotting both utilities. So where is this complaint about “too much mobility” coming from.

Last I checked, the whole survival of mesmer is based on avoiding damage through kiting (mobility) and evading/blocking. You simply cannot facetank damage without using active defensive evades/blocks or kiting skills.

The problem I have with Mesmer torch

in Mesmer

Posted by: Curunen.8729

Curunen.8729

The prestige deals its damage in a radius around yourself, encouraging it’s use in close quarters. The problem is that it deals condition damage, and the MH sword that you’d use up close and personal has no conditions built in, so you have a kitten skill set that isn’t specific to any one damage type.

The solution: The prestige now causes the flameburst around the target of your next successful attack out of stealth, only centering on you if the stealth wears off naturally or if you’re kicked out of it.

There is both condition damage and direct damage, and the direct damage is nothing to sneeze at.

I agree.

Now that they buffed the burn stacks I find Prestige does decent damage using Viper stats, and the burn covers any confusion/torment on the target. I often like to pop out of prestige in melee range without doing anything else as it usually baits a dodge given the visual effect can be confused with shatter in close quarters – which can then be followed up by unloading shatters. If they dodge Prestige then it’s good for you, if they don’t then it’s also good because they will take some damage.

So tbh I think Prestige is fine. iMage however still does need some help.

How to nerf condis in PvP/WvW

in PvP

Posted by: Curunen.8729

Curunen.8729

I think the separation of condis by categories (damaging vs non-damaging) is essential.

And as I have mentioned many times, I think the best for condis is to ensure that condi clears ONLY clears non-damaging ones. You can then reduce the condi output to make it match power damage output. You could have then a very clear situation, where you need to avoid/block the condi bursts but can sustain the constant pressure from the AA and other non-burst applications. Exactly like power damage.

I agree with this, although I don’t expect to see such a major overhaul before the next expansion at best.

At least these builds are squishy. A tank condi war does insane condi dmg while having 10 sec of endure pain, passive healing and short CD blocks that also reflect. It cant get more braindead than that.

Condi warrior is squishier than power warrior.

Mesmer is the only class in the game where the condi spec is tankier than the power spec.

And tbh with Carrion it’s not much tankier than Marauder or Demolisher.

Regarding rabid and wanderer – damage is kitten bad using those on mesmer, especially with HoT defensive powercreep in general – you end up tickling your enemy.

I maintain that power mesmer is more dangerous than condi mesmer, condi just allows bigger margin of error through sustained dps rather than all out burst.

Hybrid play (ie Viper) allows for a small burst of direct damage while maintaining some level of sustained dps through condi application. However it is easily the squishiest of the lot as it requires more time to kill than pure zerker so needs to stick around in fights. Zerker can kill and move on extremely quickly.

Given defense is more ability based than stat based right now (ie shield 4, sword 2, F4, etc), all mesmer builds no matter the damage focus can build to the same level of survivability. Only dire/trailblazer in wvw goes against this trend – but that stat set is an extreme.

If they would introduce more mastery points to the core game, I wouldn’t mind. But the points I need to to complete the only mastery left are tied to personal story repeats and a lot of activities that are nothing more than a grind.
They have added new points to the living story, how about making the next few batches red instead of green.

This so much.

HoT mastery points are so easy to accumulate I’d imagine many people are drowning in excess green points right now.

Red points are so much harder especially if you also max out Legendary and Fractal masteries…

There are plenty of MP in core tyria. Not all of them are supposed to be trivial to achieve, you should have to put effort in to max all of the masteries. Besides, what this really comes down to is which mastery line is more important to you? Being able to craft the new legendaries or autoloot? If autoloot is more important than legendary crafting to anyone in this thread, yet they maxed leg crafting first and are now hurting for mastery points, I don’t know what to tell you other than plan stuff out better.

I’ve maxxed legendary and have max experience for both fractal and pact commander. I currently require 11 core mastery points to finish off.

On the other hand I’ve maxxed all HoT masteries and (I can’t check exact amount because not at computer right now) have more than a handful of green points building up, which just keep increasing with every living world release. It’s so kitten easy to earn HoT mastery points.

The only remaining core mastery points for me are locked behind living story achievements, stupid achievements like Dive Master and unlocking every single cultural armour.

I personally don’t care much for autoloot or accessing mistlock singularities, however in my eyes it is far far easier to gain way more HoT mastery points than necessary than it is to gain enough core tyria mastery points because they’re accessible through easier achievements.

Dunno but I’m really looking forward to the pvp “capture the gift” minigame.

It’s one of the most fun things in this game, such a shame it’s only available for a short time every year. I love the mechanics of each class and it’s really light hearted.

I do hope they add some new songs to Bell Choir – it’s fun but really repetitive at this point.

The real interesting part is what will happen when they release the next elite and it doesn’t have 25% movement speed increase.

Yeah this is an interesting thought, because it could mean a drastic change of runes and food to accommodate for certain things.

I’m imagining that if this whole Mirage and dodge/blur thing is true then perhaps it will be similar to how daredevil traits are setup – ie remove movement impairing conditions on blur and gain swiftness?

Of course I’d rather they just slap +25% movement speed on each elite spec we get, but I think they’ll try to mix it up and make different ways of moving fast.

It has allowed me to use… other runes and food.
