Confused about tournaments

Yea, unless you live and breathe tournaments, it’s really tough to know what the hell is going on with tournaments. For all the effort they’ve made to make big prize pools, you’d think there would be more effort to make everything accessible.

I’m still hoping they’ll one day consider making highlight reels of big tournaments for the people that can’t sit and watch the whole thing for hours on end.

For Conquest, I’d agree to stick with the meta tanky celestial scrapper build (on MetaBattle.com).

For Stronghold, you have a bit more flexibility to run something glassier since you can play a more guerilla type playstyle by dropping damage, then running without having to worry about losing a capture point. High damage AoE is great for this. Something like the old marauder rifle build (http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Engineer_-_Marauder_Rifle) or even a condi flamethrower build, like this can work well (http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdAQJAqanUUB1ahtbBWXBEqiF2iiO4P+kH8DLxAQsjminA-TJhAABkVGAgHAwg7Pw9JAAA)

For open world PvE, I found this to be pretty solid (http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdAQFASlUUhatY7Ww6KQ7FL3FF9qH7zO4CGhBw4W0EJBA-TxRBABXp8jm9HwTHwCXAAAeAAUq+jZKBBA-e). Since you don’t have external might sources, Juggernaut + Mass Momentum and HGH can make this a high dps build with lots of cleave for tagging mobs, even though you’d never want to camp flamethrower in any group PvE situation. Throw Elixir B for stability before swapping off of flamethrower to something like EG to keep from losing might stacks.

future of druid in raids?

What's Going On w/ Warriors?

It seems like ANet is trying to make warriors the heavy CC linebacker, similar to the Hambow in days past. However, since hambow was nerfed, shoutbow was the only thing to keep warrior afloat, which was much more of a boon stacking, condi cleansing, guardian-wannabe. I’m not saying it wasn’t a fun spec, but it wasn’t really in the flavor of what ANet seems to be pushing towards.

Right now, berserker seems to be more in line with a glass cannon role, which doesn’t seem to fit anywhere in a meta where a celestial/soldier’s bruiser will just soak up the burst and then melt the glass cannon.

Rage skills, similar to Physical Skills have a lot of potential, but their problem is a lot like venoms on thieves in that they take up valuable utility spots that are needed for defense and stunbreak skills.

Tl;dr There needs to be either some integration of defense/stunbreak/utility with heavy CC utilities for warriors to fit back into a hambow role or the entire meta will need to shift away from where most glass cannons are just hard countered by celestial/soldiers bruisers.

Maybe it's balanced, but this meta is unfun

in PvP

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

Yea, this is my least favorite meta in a long time (at least for Conquest). I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is. Here’s my best guess though:

1) Warrior is completely not even viable
2) Thief is in a very bad spot as well
3) Engi seems to be viable due to playing like a DD ele
4) Overall conquest meta still seems to be very focused on tanky bruisers without any room for high dps/highly mobile builds.

I wasn’t a fan of the cele ele meta, but at least before HoT there was a bit of room for classes like D/P thief to shine…kind of…

Warrior has just needed help overall. I know it’s a hard class to balance since it’s easily a low skill cap beast or a free kill, but something big needs to change for this class mechanic wise. Small shaves don’t seem to be the answer here, even if that is a wise balance philosophy overall.

Thief either needs to be toned back to be a solid roamer/1v1 class again or will need an alternative viable build. If venoms got the right kind of buff (not simply more buffs), I could see this being worthwhile. They at least need a stun break.

Other classes seem to be primarily affected by how strong celestial or celestial-like builds (such as soldier’s) are and would probably be better addressed by a change to those amulets.

Ways to get Sinister armor or subsitute?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

^ Good advice.

Overall, a good condi set is one of the hardest sets to get, which is probably why it’s so hard to get good condi players for raids. Here’s the overall process for what gear you’ll want and how to get it:

For your trinkets, you’ll want Sinister, except your backpack. There’s no Sinister or Viper’s backpack, so you’ll just want a rabid, rampagers, or celestial back piece.

The trinkets are kind of a pain to get, but are worth it. Here are your options:
Amulet:
Jurah’s Jewel
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Jurah%27s_Jewel
Wynne’s Locket
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Wynne%27s_Locket

Ring:
Plague Signet
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Plague_Signet_
Vereta’s Seared Ring
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Verata%27s_Seared_Ring

Accessory:
Caithe’s Blossom
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Caithe%27s_Blossom
Caithe’s Remorse
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Caithe%27s_Remorse

For armor and weapon, you’ll want to go with Viper’s stats. You can either craft straight Ascended Viper’s Armor from recipes that you get from Exalted chests or do as recommended above and just change the stats on existing armor to viper’s stats. To get the Viper’s Insignia and Inscription needed to change stats on ascended armor/weapons, you’ll need to buy the recipe from one of the following vendors in Auric Basin:
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Aurillium_Collector#vendor4
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Exalted_Mastery_Vendor#vendor20

This will all cost a LOT of gold and time if you don’t already have many of these resources, so yea, make sure you really are best suited as condi before making the investment.

Stronghold tactics?

in PvP

Strat will change depending on what the enemy does, but I’d say for any game you’ll want to have the following done at the opening:

1) Everyone should spawn doorbreakers
2) At least 1 person should run ahead to burn guards (high dps that can knockback 1 guard onto the other and cleave do this best)
3) At least 1 person should run to AoE and CC the enemy team’s doorbreakers.

Depending on where the enemy team goes, you may need more offense or defense.

I would also say that any time you get a mist essence spawn near your treb, you’ll want at 1 person to treb that area to keep enemies from capping.

Even before alacrity, the Rotation was only a theoretical one.

As long as you prioritize all the burns and grenade 2, you should be fine.

^this. It’s not realistic to keep up a set rotation in raids anyways due to all the movement, but watch engis in kill videos and you’ll see a lot of them downing bosses without using anything close to a rotation.

Feedback: Not enough pressure on Tank/Healer

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

Giving some feedback on raids:

So far it seems like DPS is really pressured to perform, but it doesn’t seem like the requirements for tanks or healers is quite the same.

Now, to clarify that: I’m not saying that tanking or healing is too easy. I think the mechanics of those roles are sufficiently challenging.

Tanks
However, tanks don’t seem to take enough damage that a player really needs to put much focus into damage mitigation. Making a good tank build seems more along the lines of taking just about any profession and giving them a bit of toughness and damage mitigation to survive while impacting their dps as little as possible.

Healers
Healing is pretty similar. 1 single person is able to heal an entire raid with little to no support and can often do so without really stacking a lot of healing power gear. It’s better than in the beta when people used zerker druids, but it still has a ways to go.

Why this matters:
A lot of people have been looking forward to raids for a long time to be able to have a place where they can play something other than glass DPS in a useful way. Maybe it’s just the people I play with, but I see a lot of people that want to play a support role to some degree who are forced to go DPS since groups really seem to only need 1 healer and 1 tank with 8 DPS (some groups even consolidate the healer/tank and tank 9 dps).

So my tldr feedback is this: I think the encounters need to be adjusted so that there’s not such a high ratio of DPS roles to non-DPS roles.

No group wants to have you if you are not the right class and don´t have fully ascended gear.

This game is no different than WoW now.

1) Join a guild
2) Pick a better build. Condi is much better suited.
3) If you don’t have the right gear, then go through the time and effort to get some degree of the right gear like everyone else did. You don’t need full ascended. Just get trinkets and weapons.

You likely didn’t expect to start running level 80 dungeons when you were level 5 and this should really be the same case. Raiding is the next step up, so if you want to do it, go through the effort to get prepared for it.

If pugs are being unfair, then join a guild that shares your beliefs.

Just be aware that if your choices on gear/build hold back a raid from progress, it’s not people just being mean (at least not all the time, lol), it’s people making decisions for the benefit of 9 people vs your single preference.

To my knowledge, these DPS meters only show you your own DPS, so there’s no way to tell what DPS other people are doing.

No one appears to be considering a Druid tank, since they cant do any damage anyway.

Just stack Nomad’s gear and face tank the boss. You can heal through anything, and that opens up a slot to bring in another herald or PS warrior for might stacking and DPS

Yea, a druid is a viable option, but your back line will have a lot of trouble getting heals if they do. You’ll probably have to make up for the healing somewhere. You may just be able to do it with enough healing from stuff like healing turrets and water fields, but it sounds rough.

This table speaks for itself:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3tcti9/averaged_raid_composition_based_on_successful/

I did the math, and thief dps is about 20% below top tier dps while having less survivability and utility.

The druid should heal enough and the heal from venom share is very rarely needed.

The basilisk venom share helps with the breakbar which shouldnt be a problem for organized groups anyways, since it’s enough if everyone has just minor CC that gets used at the right moment.

supporting with invisibility just reduces the overall dps.

But my request is to nerf thief even more now!
Why?
because it’s still not obvious enough how bad the thief currently is.
In order to get buffs for the thief, first it has to get nerfed even harder.

Well, the table does show something else as well: 3 guilds downed the boss with a thief in the group and some of the most coveted professions for raid groups were event absent in some groups, such as engis, druids, and warriors.

In other words, Thief may not be the biggest boon to a group, but if you don’t down a boss, it’s not because you had a thief.

Heres’s a suggestion I’d like to here what others think of:

Provide a decent PvE target dummy, perhaps to put in guild halls. You could then time to see how fast people can take down the dummy or time yourself to check out a build to get a measure of dps.

While this wouldn’t show dps in a boss fight, it would be very available to organized guild groups who are more likely to use dps measures in a productive ways and would be less likely to be used in a pug where it could be used as an excuse to kick someone.

It is sad that Guardian, which my opinion only class that is originally designed by ANet to be closest to be classic Tank from other MMOs does not getting a consideration for tanking in raids says a lot about the problems we have at GW2 and state of Guardian specially.

DH or kick, men I love this game, 1000s of build combinations from gear and traits, only one viable build, I guess that must be balancing.

Guardian is much more of a healer in heavy armor than a tank.

If it was meant to be tanky, it wouldn’t have one of the lowest health pools in the game.

It has the lowest hp because it’s one of the tankiest professions in the game. Guards have a ton of damage mitigation between aegis, blinds, blocks, and protection.

In raids, blinds are next to irrelevant and Aegis doesn’t seem to make a huge difference, but protection and blocks are still great tools to make guards a solid choice as a tank.

Warrior raid tank?

in Warrior

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

Warrior tanks are purely situational because you rely on defensive healing and boons from outside sources. I think scrappers are the best tanks right now. They can maintain high toughness, self uptime protection, aegis, and regen, while at the same time remaining mobile and pumping out decent damage with bombs. Tanking in this game is all about protection and aegis boon uptime, which warriors don’t have. I think the world first clear of the new raid content used a scrapper to tank all four of the encounters.

The warrior’s high hp pool and with utilities like Endure Pain and Rousing Resiliance (1000 toughness with stun break trait), should make up for the lack of protection.

I feel that every profession has their own pros and cons when it comes to tanking, and even though some might be better (like ele and engi) the overall outcome is just as successful, regardless of which is doing the job.

Anyone who turns down x class as a tank and would rather wait 30 extra minutes just to get x class in their raid, is an idiot.

Rousing Resilience doesn’t really matter for tanking since you’re rarely if ever going to be stunned.

And yea, you can probably get by with a lot of classes as tanks…however, I’d save warrior as a tank for a last resort.

If you have a necro, engineer, guardian, revenant, or ele in the group with any toughness gear, they would make a better tank. You’d also lose a lot less by having them tank than to sacrifice the benefits of a PS war unless you were able to get by with some PS-hybrid build.

But yes…if you have to wait a really long time to find a decent option for a tank (which doesn’t seem likely from my experience), just have the war tank. They’re not a great option, but you can probably make it work, at least for the first boss.

Warrior raid tank?

in Warrior

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

I’m not really sold on a warrior as a tank. Here’s why:

1) Very little damage mitigation outside of long cooldowns, such as stances
2) Reliance on stances/dolyak sig mean no banners, which are one of the biggest benefits to having a war
3) Greatsword involves moving around a lot, so you’ll sacrifice using your best DPS weapon to keep a boss stationary
4) No access to protection

While warriors sound like they should be good tanks since they’re high health, shield-wielding characters and warriors are among the best tanks in most MMOs, but compared to a hammer guardian or a Jalis/retribution revenant, there’s just not much damage mitigation that isn’t tied to a long cooldown or that doesn’t come at a huge cost to DPS.

That being said, I think that a good PS war is one of the most valuable builds to have in any organized PvE group.

I really don’t put a whole lot of stock in stacking toughness. Sure, you’ll need to have more than anyone else, but I don’t think a full sentinels/soldier’s gear set is really ideal for tanks.

I think that the best direction for damage mitigation is through boons and talents. For example, a revenant with Jalis stance and Retribution traits has a lot of damage mitigation. Hammer guard also has 100% prot up time if they stick to autoattacks.

I agree that Aegis doesn’t seem to be that useful for raids, however. Not only is it often broken on small damage, but there’s also a lot of unblockable stuff.

Part of me is cringing to post a topic about this since I know this is so controversial, but with the release of raids, I think it’s necessary. However, let’s try to keep things civil and rational (as best as is possible on the forums, lol).

Personally, I’m torn. As a raid leader, there’s a lot of appeal, but as a veteran WoW player, I’ve seen the community shaming and kitten issues which can arise from these things.

Pros:
– Allow for better decision making on splitting up groups
– Allow for better advice and build/profession suggestions to optimize raid group performance
– Give a self measurement for performance and improvement
– Competition can drive for stronger dps overall
– Can lead players to understand the difference between theoretical dps and practical dps

Cons:
– Players often tend to over-inflate the importance of DPS at the cost of other aspects of a raid
– Player shaming or bragging that disrupt group cohesion and/or push people to quit (the game, the guild, the group, or any combination of those)
– Overactive sense of competition between group members also causes players to over-estimate or under-estimate their worth to groups, which can cause all sorts of drama
– Especially toxic in pugs

What do you think? What are your list of pros/cons and do you think there’s a better alternative?

A) People tend to judge “scrub” or “pro” in the first few minutes of seeing anyone play…so don’t take it personal if I doubt whether most people here actually have any decent insight into how good people with a certain title really are, particularly since they probably only played 1 game with these people.

B) People play different builds. You may have seen someone who’s a pro thief that decided to try bunker for the first time. I’ve clocked in a lot of hours with this game and while I’m far from a pro, you’d have a very different opinion of my skill if you saw me playing something like my engi vs if I played Necro, which is a profession I’ve hardly touched.

C) And yes, lots of experience doesn’t mean lots of skill. Being successful at PvP often involves many different types of strengths. Good reflexes, good knowledge of mechanics, good instincts on strategy, etc. all play a role and not everyone is good at all of those, even if they’re amazing at one or two of the others.

Is ascended gear necessary for raid?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Dahkeus.8243

Dahkeus.8243

Is it technically necessary? I don’t think anyone can say for sure.

However, as difficult as the content is, you’ll want any advantage you can get.

That being said, you’ll probably lose more dps from practical reasons like messing up on your dps rotation because you were looking for that red circle or taking too long to get back to the boss after you ran away for some reason.

I can pretty much guarantee that if you’re human, you’ll probably see more benefit to raid success by spending 30 min researching the hell out of how to play well in a raid than you will spending hours crafting and grinding to get a full ascended set.

I would recommend getting the easy ascended pieces you can at least though, such as trinkets from laurels/commendations and if you only craft 1-2 pieces, craft weapons since the stat boost on those is better than what you get from armor.

P.s. I think you mean “zerk” instead of “zerg”, but that’s an awesome typo. And yes, zerk is still ideal unless you take on a tank role, in which case you just need to have more toughness than anyone else in your raid. That may be a few trinkets or a whole defensive set, depending on who’s in your group.

So I hear tanking is a thing now.

With that said I have a Guardian sitting around with Soldiers Exotic armor, Soldiers Exotic back/Trinkets, and Ascended Zerker Rings/Neck/Hammer/GS.

Will I be able to tank with a Hammer?

If I need Scepter/Shield can they be exotic?

Do I have to invest in Ascended Armor which would require power leveling Armor smithing and a ton of time gating?

What masteries should I be leveling up?

1) You probably don’t need that much toughness. You just need more toughness than the rest of your party.

2) Hammer is ideal for tanking due to the prot up time (more efficient than gear for negating damage)

3) You’re probably fine just using ascended trinkets (bought with laurels/guild comms), although I would advise getting at least 1 ascended weapon if you can. A lucky ascended chest drop will cover you. Ascended weapons and trinkets are a decent boost in stats, but armor doesn’t make as much of a difference.

Once the fractal rewards are adjusted, you can probably just farm fractals and try to get lucky with ascended drops.

I’ll have you know that we’ve done the raid at 10 with 4 thieves, and manage to go to the last boss. Then wipe in chain at his feet.

Among the 4 thieves, only 1 guildy and I ran with a condi build like this one http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vZAQNAoYVn8MBdmitNBGNB0PhlWCzrM0GSRzlwV4LULA0FWAA-TxSAQBU4IAUItAG4BAEQdBMc/Brp+DAOBATSJ4YU61tDBQIVGAA-e
The 2 others were pugs.

Thieves were very welcome at the blue boss for boon stripping on 20sec CD.

Thieves are not needed in raids, but can manage to perform well. Even if other classes can fill the same role, with better sustain, support and all, does not mean we are excluded from it.

Thanks for sharing this and being one of the few productive posts in the thread, lol.

However, I’d question if this wouldn’t be a better variant for most situations:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vZAQNAoYVl8MhmmYbTwoJw/ELtEG3Q4IUEmHhrwXoWAoLsAA-TxSAQBRU9HKcEAwmSvCpFwAPAgAqLgh7PAgTAwkUC2tDBQIVGQKgFVWB-e

The main difference is SA instead of TR for venom share. Because of this Impairing Daggers was swapped for Skale Venom and elite was changed to Basilisk. Aside from additional DPS through shared venoms, you also get breakbar utility by popping a shared Basilisk.

Other changes were changing Weakening Strike to Havoc Mastery for 7% extra damage and slight adjustment of gear (although I have a feeling your gear was largely due to the high cost of viper’s armor and time required for Sinister trinkets rather than a min/max of an ideal situation).

Scrapper and the Vale Guardian

Can this be taken somewhere else, please?

There are enough threads debating our function gyro mechanic. The purpose of this thread is to talk about the scrapper in accordance to raids, where it is meaningful, so your discussion about it being meaningful for “most of the content” is really off-topic.

Yea, I’ll take the blame for that. I should have known what pointing out the usefulness of F-Gyro would do. But at least it got the thread bumps! So sad that most threads with good builds tend to just sink away since people tend to prefer to post on more controversial stuff…

Anyways, the build seems pretty solid. I’ll be passing it along to guildies for consideration on our next raid.

Since Tools wasn’t really that huge for DPS (10% modifier only at full endurance), I don’t see much issue with Scrapper taking its place, even though the only dps boost is just the ability to keep up more might stacks when you get away from your might stacking sources.

However, if your druid runs Spirit of Nature and invests in the Nature Magic line, you probably will see a bit more benefit from this since you’ll get much better stability up time.

Also, I have a question for the OP or anyone else who knows:
– I noticed that the blue group only had 3 people. Do you not need 4 people to stand on the lightning circle during the split phase?

The green AoE from the Blue Guardian only needs 3, the green AoE from the Vale guardian is the one that requires 4.

Awesome, thanks!

Herald/Jalis tank?

So I’m trying to work out a good tanky build for my Revenant but havent found much good advice since people are still working on their own builds. My main question is to do with gearing, but I would love to see some advice on builds.

I’m currently running soldiers gear with Superior Runes of the Earth to increase my protection uptime.

What do you do for a build like this and how is it working out for you?

I actually had a guild mate suggest this, so we’ll be trying it out when we go in on Friday night. Here’s the build he linked:

One note is that he said that the earth runes don’t seem to affect the prot duration from shield.

I believe there was a guild that killed the Vale Guardian during the beta.

Here’s a link to the video:

They werent a pug, he said world first by a pug.

I’m so used to the lack of correct grammar from forum posts that I misinterpreted this as well.

“World 1st kill of Vale Guardian by pug group”
is different from
“World 1st kill of Vale Guardian, by pug group”
which would have implied that the world first kill was done by a pug group, lol.

Best War Build for Raids

How is Tremor against breakbars? I know a lot of CC skills that send out CC in a path in front of them tend to take off more breakbar than the type of CC they apply would normally (such as Staff on Rev and Shield on Chrono). Is this the case with mace as well?

I wanted to check in with the warrior community to see what everyone thinks is the best build for the current raid content.

I’m assuming that a straight up Phalanx Strength build is ideal (unless your raid already has 2 of them), but I’d like to see what variant of this people are using. I.e. are people still using Head Butt or is Banner better since we’re actually getting chalenging content for once?

Also, with the value of condi, is there a condi build that people think is competitive? Is there a condi build that also brings Phalanx Strength?

Please share, but I would also ask to get some context if people could say how far they’ve cleared into Spirit Vale as well. Thanks.

I’d have a mechanic that is meaningful no matter the content, or at least one that is meaningful for most of the content.

Challenging content should be answered through skill, not through specifically designed mechanics that only work there.

1) Benefits generally come with down sides. Not everyone can do everything all the time. That’s called balance.

2) False dichotomy.
