If you read the post you’d know I’m not saying the Ranger hasn’t got problems. I’m saying we all KNOW it has problems so why are people coming here to constantly repeat them to the people that know it has problems… You’re just telling other Rangers who are fully aware the Ranger has issues, that the Ranger has issues. It’s pure idiocy and pointless, not to mention to completely discourages anyone who’s planning on trying the Ranger out for themselves
Too my threads on this forum are repeating all the problems the Ranger has. We all know the problems, the dev’s know the problems, and I like to believe they are considering what to do to balance it out, but balancing is tricky. I like to keep that hope at least. And all this Ranger hate really de-motivates newer players, including myself. The fact is if a thread is full of all problems and no benifits, and a Ranger who is lets say around level 30, not too deep into the game but not too early reads these threads. He/she is de-motivated and feels down about being a Ranger. So let’s release some love for the Ranger.
Personally I love the look, feel and animations of Longbow. I also love collecting pets, naming them and feeling like I have some sort of emotional bond with them.
I’m not saying Ranger hasn’t got problems cause it does, but EVERY profession has problems. No profession is perfect and all have their low points.
Also if so many people hate the Ranger so much why don’t they play a different profession. If you really can’t stand the Ranger then the Ranger probabally isn’t for you. Personally I’m in love with the Ranger and I think it’s the best profession in game right now, despite it’s problems and issues. It’s enjoyable and in a game enjoyment is all that matters…
If any tweaks are made it can only be improvements. Theres no denying Ranger has some issues left to fix, and the devs have said their aware of the issues. From what I hear on the thief forums the thief is getting a nerf.
Ranger can’t reallt get nerfed as it’s already nerfed compaired to other professions. The only thing they can do to balance is nerf other classes or buff ours. If they do nerf the ranger than that’s a huge insult to Rangers. And I’ll probabally stop playing if they nerf Ranger. As I’m already disapointed with the ranger in this game and other mmorpgs do the ranger class a lot better…
Thieves aren’t all that. A “Good” thief will be a problem yes. But most thieves chose it because they think it’s OP and they want the easy way out. And those kind of players usually have no idea what their doing and you can take them out almost instantly and stun lock them with pets.
Professions don’t have as much effect as much as people think… The biggest factor is the skill. A good Ranger against a good thief has a perfectly good chance of winning. Personally I’m not a good Ranger but I’ve seen some good Rangers taking out many thieves 1v1
I’m a Ranger and I have no problem with it at all… I take pride in being a Ranger. Because unlike thieves and warriors you don’t see 100’s of Rangers running around. I feel more unique. I enjoy pets, just the companionship not their effectiveness. I love bows. And most of all I don’t for one second believe it’s “Broken”. And if you feel it is broken then you should play a different profession.
I probably like it so much because I love bows in real life too, and I’ve done archery for the passed 9 years of my life so I have a strong passion for Archery. But Ranger is a lot of fun to me =]
You can use a shortbow as a thief and it’s a strong weapon choice. As far as using it fully and no melee I’m not too sure. If you want to go pure ranged Dual Pistols will probably be a better choice for the dps. Shortbow is generally more of a utility weapon then a primary weapon
Looks fine, but your going D/D and you want to avoid stealth except for getting out of a fight? You have to be in stealth to backstab, and backstab will be one of your better attacks. Play around with CnD (#5) and learn to position yourself behind your opponent while stealthed to get off the backstab. You’ll start to really love stealth and see the benefits of it.
I know, I will use that occasionally. I’m not saying I dislike stealth, I just try to avoid CnD backstabs cause it’s too easy to kill that way.
Everyone saying Thief is OP needs to understand Thief can be taken out easy if you know how to play your profession correctly… A thief caught off guard by a Warrior will get downed in 2 or 3 hits. Instead of focusing on nerfing the professions which are decent. ArenaNet need to get it together and focus on fixing Ranger. Cause the Ranger is terribly under powered and under cared for by ArenaNet. Anything other than PvE the Ranger is awful at…
I recently came back to Thief, I’ve been playing Ranger previously but got too frustrated with how weak it’s damage is so decide to come back to Thief. I can’t fully settle on a build I love as I’m trying to go something like a Ranger without a pet. Someone that does a lot of damage but can also evade a lot. I’ve come up with this build that seems to work well but I’d like to see what people think of it. And something’s I could possibly change to make it suit me better.
Link to the build: Thief Build
I went with D/D as I enjoy them the most, nothing else really pulling me to them except their just what I enjoy and what suits me best. I enjoy the Sword and Dagger too so might swap out to Sword and Dagger. For the Dagger Sigil I went with Air on the first Dagger for that extra damage it causes, and Might for the Offhand dagger as there’s not much I can use for Off Hand Sigil that benefits me, and might is always nice. For the shortbow I went with Sigil of fire, since shortbow is almost fully AoE I figured an AoE sigil will make it even better, but I’m no expert.
I went for the 10 in Deadly Arts mainly for the “Mug” and the slight extra power, I didn’t go any further cause the rest of the skills don’t really interest me too much, especially the Mini traits since their to do with poison and condition and I’m going for a power/crit build.
The 30 in Critical Strikes is for the Fury when target reaches 50% health, cause this makes my critical chance 90% for 10 seconds which I like a lot, Side Strike is mainly because I couldn’t find anything better to go there, and extra Crit Chance is always nice, as if I open a fight in back attacks I have 97% Crit Chance which is always nice. Lastly I went with Executioneer instead of the hidden killer, because 100% crit chance in stealth doesn’t interest me at all. Since during all my fights my crit chance is constantly 90-97% so 20% extra damage to targets under 50% health is much better for me.
Shadow Arts I put nothing into because I don’t really constantly stealth, stealth to me is just for getting out of a fight or buying me some time, I don’t really want to be a Stealth Backstab thief cause that’s really just one combo of attacks and nothing else, I like general in-fight builds better as it allows more diversity and change of tactics and combos which keeps me entertained.
The 15 in Acrobatics is purely for the Dodging return’s some endurance, I find this to be one of the most helpful mini traits on the thief’s traits as dodging with thief is key to success, if I’m playing PvE or WvW I switch Power of Inertia for Decent of Shadows as I often like jumping off stuff like cliffs and buildings, and that often leads in an embarrassing death
Lastly I went 15 into trickery for the Thrill of the crime trait, which gives me fury might and swiftness on steal, this is helpful as it works in well with Furious Retaliation, and the more fury I have the better as it keeps my critical chance at 90% pretty much constantly in any fight. Because I steal to open up a fight and get fury, making my crit chance 90%. Then when the target is at 50% I get another fury plus extra damage allowing me to finish the target off nicely
For my amulet and armour runes I went with Berserker for the Amulet and Eagle for the armour for the extra precision
Soo yea, let me know what your opinions are on this build. And if you think it will work well in PvE + PvP + WvW as I love to do all 3 modes, also let me know if any changes I can make will improve it somehow.
I lost patience with my Ranger last week and deleted it, but Ranger isn’t as bad as people say. It really depends what you want to do. Personally I like PvE, PvP and WvW. And I plan on doing WvW fully once I get high enough level. And Ranger is awful at PvP. Because Rangers damage is awful, to balance out the pets. And in PvE where the pet will actually attack your target it’s not bad. But in PvP where your pet will either die instantly or have no idea what it’s doing. You have half the damage of anyone else, and killing takes a long time.
I deleted my Ranger. I’ve been Ranger/Thief for a few weeks. Swapping between the two. And I lost all patience with the Ranger and ArenaNets pathetic attempt at a “Ranged DPS” Class… I understand the issues to encounter when balancing, but it would be nice to atleast HEAR something is going to happen… So I’m going to go Thief and never look back.
What would be the point in the thief… Everyone can burn foes in some way shape or form. So stealth would be made useless… I think stealth is under powered in my opinion, since most skills are 3 seconds, 4 if traited… I’m not saying we should have perm stealth like WoW. But really if you’re going to complain about 3-10 seconds of stealth, then you have a LOT to complain about in this game. There are much more serious matters.
I think all the rangers that still hang around know this and also the other flaws of the prof. But hey, what can we do? We all have mentioned and tried to make devs aware of these flaws but we just have to either wait or roll a new char.
Personally, I’m waiting for the next patch, if no significant changes for ranger, I’ll go fulltime warrior.
I’m doing the same as this. I’m waiting till the end of month patch. If there’s still no effort put in for Rangers then I’m deleting my Ranger completely and going Thief. I enjoy Ranger profession personally.. PvE and just running around having fun I really enjoy it. Theres a lot to enjoy, finding pets. Naming pets. Feeling connected to them. But then as soon as you jump into WvW or PvP… Your instantly the Pawn on the Chess Table… And instantly you’re completely useless no matter how fun it is. This is really annoying. Especially since Ranger is supposedly a DPS Profession… We have no support capabilities and no DPS capabilities… So what do we have? Useless pets which we can name and pretend have an effect, when really they don’t have much effect at all. They either do good damage and die in an instant. Or they can live a fight but do awful damage which has next to zero effect on target.
Is it plausible to play Guild Wars 2 as a lone wolf. A few friends tell me Guilds and groups are a big part of Guild Wars 2, which I can somewhat see since Guild is in the name. But I’m the kind of person who likes to go in alone. Not that I’m a selfish person or a bad team player, I like to go in alone and help random people. Kind of like a stereo typical lone wolf, someone who shows up out of know where to help out, then vanishes and is never seen again.
I’ve been a part of a Guild but I left due to some falling outs. I don’t like Guilds and such because I’m female. So voice chatting with Guildies and being “Tactical” is always annoying, as I always feel like I’m treated differently and less capable to play a game because of my gender.
So all in all my question is, can I play Guild Wars 2 as a lone wolf and still be successful at the game (I know for dungeons I need a group), but for WvW and general game play.
I can run guild wars on my notebook maxed out at 30-40fps, drops to 20-30 in WvW.
I run on windows 8 64-bit, 3rd gen i3 3110m processor, AMD HD 7770M 2GB Graphics and 8GB DDR3 RAM. Those specs are kinda cheap to get with a new PC these days, and I can run any current game maxed except for games like Metro. I gotta run them Medium-High.
I saw the dev banner and got my hopes up. Clicked and read the top post.
THEN I SAW THE DATE.
Same -_-
Mmm twilight on ranger? Doesn’t fit the class at all, but gratz anyway.
Its unique though :P Since you don’t see any Rangers with legendary GS. All I’ve seen is Kudzu and The Dreamer :P
The bear pets are the best tanky pets. Any of them Polar bear, Brown Bear, Black Bear or even that ugly “Bear” xD
Great points from both sides from Deniara and Danikat
It really depends on your preference. Some people feel more comfortable focusing on one Character, some like a number of alts.
Personally I’m very OCD and like everything to be perfectly neat and tidy, so I never like having alts in games as I like one perfect character instead of having to get more than one perfect character. When I say I’m OCD I mean I’m OCD :P I don’t even like my level being a non even number…
Their isn’t much you can do against them. Traps and Longbow is good at getting them in stealth, the #2 ability of longbow (Rapid Fire) will still do damage to them if you do the attack before they go stealth. So Barrage is good if you know the general area there in. Most times when they go stealth they’ll be taking a route around you to flank you and back stab you. Use that to your advantage and throw a trap behind you? ;D
But really 9/10 if your playing a good thief you’ll lose the fight.
Actually, the post is referring to all AOE skills. I don’t need to point out ranger AOE skills to you, do I? anyway my post was semi facetious but it illustrates a good point.
Major update coming to all the AoE skills – make classes that are good at single target damage stand out a bit more.
Yes it’s referring to AoE skills but a Ranger isn’t intended to be an AoE intense profession, the nerf is for professions like Necro and Ele’s where almost every attack is AoE, Ranger has Barrage and traps. Traps are “Intended” to be defensive measures not offensive, even though people chose to use them offensively.
I really don’t think this nerf will effect Ranger anywhere near as much as it’s going to effect Elementalist and Necromancers… And I can’t see much of a nerf they can do on traps and barrage, barrage is already weak as it is. And traps will still be effective at “Trapping” i.e their intended purpose no matter what gets done to them.
From what I can see it looks like there trying to make straight up damage attacks more of a focus, so who knows me might see a damage buff on the general attacks of Ranger. Their purely trying to saturate the AoE and non AoE to balance them out. Cause there is no denying that at the moment AoE is a lot more effective than non AoE, and they want to fix that by putting more of a focus on actual attacks and not AoE attacks. I see it as a benefit not a nerf
My;
Pig – Bieber (Cuter, stronger than the real thing)
Siamoth – Buck Tooth Barry
Brown Bear – Yogi Bear
Polar Bear – Manny
Shark – Bruce (From Finding Nemo, wanted to be more original than Jaws ;P)
Fern Hound – Celeblossom (It’s an elf name but w/e it suits it)
A lot of people have issues with the Ranger and I really don’t see why. Sure the pets die easy, sure the Damage we deal is lower than most. But the reason we deal lower damage is because our pets can deal the same damage of us… So yes a Ranger alone is weak. But a Ranger + Pet attack is a lot more powerful than you’d think.
Personally I think Ranger is extremely powerful, and even if it wasn’t I’d still stick with it cause I enjoy it the most. I also love the Rangers downed ability more than any other professions. And people say we have the worst downed… Having your pet revive you seems pretty kitten useful to me. Thief and teleport a few inches or go invisible… In most instances that’s completely useless cause people and mobs still know exactly where you are.
I really don’t see why so many people complain about it, if the profession is so un blanaced and so broken to you, and you can’t stand it so much, why are you still playing as a Ranger? If you feel it’s broken then play as a thief or a warrior, something that isn’t “broken”. But to me Ranger feels balanced enough, sure it has some issues, I won’t deny that. The pet could be improved survivability, and maybe even allow players to chose their pets traits and attributes to be more related to it. But if Ranger isn’t for you then don’t play it. There are tons of people who love the Ranger despite what issues people say it has…
I don’t think you understand what the Rangers role is… The post is referring to AoE specific proffessions.. Like the Ele. So that single target roles… Like Ranger and thief will stand out more. Eles should be worried not us. Were single target…
I did some testing of my own and as far as I see Shortbow does do more damage, but even so I’m going to go with Longbow, mostly for the appearance and animation being a lot better. Also Shortbow is focused on being close to your target in order to do damage, which to me defeats the whole point of being a Ranged weapon. Thanks for all the great advice from everyone
I don’t go full melee but I go with a Longbow, which does awful damage, so my general tactic is do as much range damage as I can with my Longbow, and when they get within a 400 range where my damage with Longbow gets god kitten embarrassing I swap out to Sword/Horn and get my melee on. Melee is pretty decent as a Ranger believe it or not. And sadly it’s generally more effective than bows >_<
It’s not just PvE it’s better for, I find it better in PvP and WvW too. I love healing spring. Never used any other heal
I realize this is a common question and is ask far to much, but is Shortbow better in “General” than the Longbow, what I mean by in General is I’m not asking does it deal more damage, but is it better for general use as an overall main weapon choice. I’ve been running with a Longbow pretty much the whole time, just because I like the look of the bigger bow, and I do Archery in real life so Longbow feels more realistic and at home to me.
Also if I go with a Shortbow would going Power/Crit still be effective? Or does the Shortbow force me to make condition build to utilize the Shortbows skills more effectively?
Also which is better for PvP, I hear a lot of people say Shortbow is best at PvP but most Rangers I see are using Longbow in PvP
I didn’t like this at first either, but when you have multiple targets it makes for some good target switching, and sticking onto a fleeing target is easy. The solution to remove it is what Durzlla said, turn off the auto attack and you get much more control over your attacks. I disabled my auto attack cause I found even with auto attack I was still mashing 1, because it’s a habit I picked up from other MMORPGS.
Great suggestions, personally I love Ranger either way. But these suggestions would make the profession feel a lot more equal with other professions. I constantly feel under powered, especially with bows. I do Archery in real life and the bows completely disappointed me in GW2… Which I can’t say about many MMORPGS. Most MMORPGS I can instantly fall in love with the bow, and feel right at home. In GW2 using a bow feels like I’m giving myself a huge disadvantage in battle as a Greatsword or Sword will serve me better in a fight than a Longbow…
I’ve read a lot of posts, and I mean A LOT. I started last night. Most people who say ranger sucks range from
1) Other classes that haven’t even played it
2) People that have played it early levels then quit
3) Full on level 80 hardcore players who still say it sucksIn between this I find random 80s saying it’s the best class ever. That margin is very small though.
That’s because it’s preference as I’ve said. I don’t think there’s a problem with the profession on ArenaNets side. It depends if you like it’s style or not. If I was to go Warrior I’m sure I could sit here and say it sucks so bad, and it’s awful, cause I like to be tactical and avoid combat when I can avoid it
*Most people who hate Ranger don’t know how to play it correctly. *
This is a common reply for people trying to play an actual kittenty class. The ranger is so faceroll easy to play; to say people don’t know how to play it properly is to insult them and to be overall ignorant. The class is far from complete with HUGE glaring issues while with a very questionable profession mechanic.
As for ranger being the worst class? In terms of Dungeons/ SPvP/ WvW; yes it is. You don’t hear anyone complaining about the ranger class on the forums, there’s a reason for that.
So your saying the people who play Ranger are the ones who defend it? Maybe that’s because they enjoy it and don’t have a problem with it.
The ones who say Ranger is the worst profession are the ones who don’t play it as their main, and instead they play it for a few hours and then say it sucks… To say that Rangers who defend their profession by saying theres nothing wrong with it are just covering up lies is rather silly… If there was a problem it would be the active Rangers complaining about it. I happen to find it OP at the best of times, considering at 1500 range with a longbow you can deal 10-12k auto attack in sPvP. And by the time the victim gets to you the Ranger would have got a good 5-10 shots off… Which by that time the victim would have had to use their heal and the Ranger would have all their skills at the ready including their heal…
What about people who prefur the backwards lean? Not everyone has the same opinions on things
Shortbow is kind of weak and you have to be max range to get good damage out of the longbow. I still prefer using bows, but if they would remove the range/damage difference with the longbow, I would like it even more.
Yea… I used to do Archery in real life. And the whole damage getting higher at range makes no sense… If anything the bow would do more damage at point blank range than it will at long range as it would be fired at a higher velocity
Most people who hate Ranger don’t know how to play it correctly. It’s all about preference as with all professions. You either love it or hate it. Personally I think it’s one of the strongest professions. The only downside I see is it can get boring at times with a bow. As you’re never really in much danger of death. But I’ve tried Thief also, and people say Thief is the “Fun” profession but personally I find Ranger a lot more fun to play. As you can relax a bit more and play
Also, about the Melee, I don’t think most Rangers prefur melee, the problem is Rangers who use the Longbow like myself. At close ranger the Longbow does awful awful damamge, so when a mob gets close I swap out to a Sword and Horn, or a Greatsword since it’ll deal more damamge close range than a Longbow will
(edited by DancinPuppeh.8421)
Personally I suffer the same issue mostly, I find using Barrage from the Longbow ontop of yourself to be somewhat helpful at aiding the fight, as it’ll screw there shatters over. But of course that’s on a long cool down and doesn’t last a very long duration.
It’s all a matter of preference. personally I love Ranger, but I’ve only compared it to Thief, Ranger is best for its diversity, the ability to play a role in any fight and do well at anything, powerful in WvW and PvE, and there alright at PvP at the best of times. But everyone’s opinions are different.
Ranger can get boring at times but again that’s a matter of preference and opinion, It’s a simple and relaxed profession to play and mostly not much action and dodging as you’d get with a thief. But if you like the style it can still be entertaining.
For me the best thing is the fact that it gives you another activity to do that no other profession can, pet finding and pet collecting, it’s small but it’s just one more activity to spend time doing :P
There’s nothing wrong with the profession in PvP… Truth is any profession you chose you can find at least one problem… You could even got thief and complain that it can be instantly killed if stunned, and a good enough Warrior gets hold of them.
The reason Ranger “Sucks” in PvP is cause most Rangers are doing it wrong… Ranger isn’t supposed to be dealing a ton of damamge or taking a ton of damage, you’re there to be a pain in kitten and help out from afar.
Personally I’m not the best at PvP but I still manage to do alright in PvP. Barrage on a point is effective at keeping enemies off it, or killing any who stay on it. Also good at taking out downed people without needing to run though the crazy battle
