I haven’t gotten my first piece of ascended gear =\

The back item is RNG (even though they said pre release this would never happen). The ring at level 10 is also RNG because there is apparently a bug that stops you from getting it to drop 100% of the time.

Honestly i have no interest in ascended gear, where would i need it, i’m in no plans going too deep down (lvl10+) into the new dungeon, yet at least.
As for other pve, who cares if i got exotics or not? They’re still valid for previous content say the least.
WvW? Cmon, it’s zergfest anyway, i doubt my performance will be affected much by those.

Whilst I don’t want to discard your comment, I have to say that if you haven’t tried WvW decked out in exotics, you won’t know that the experience is vastly different. Especially if you do glass cannon builds. I was quite surprised by this myself.

I will be glad when the people who have stopped playing this game move on to another game’s forums.

I moved on to this one from all the other same old MMOs, but suddenly this one started turning into the same old thing they were. Forgive me for saying I liked it the way it was.

Can you suddenly not do the things that you enjoyed because of this patch?

Yes. Try getting a group for regular dungeons. Experience how much longer it takes now.

Yes again. I enjoyed playing a game made by people who didn’t lie to the playerbase. That game is gone. Effectively everything I enjoyed prepatch, taken away.

lol

Additionally, in the future try not to let your criticism take an unjustified patronizing overtone.

This is brilliant!

1) I’m a 26 yr old man.

2) Story is very important. I think it is the glue that keeps the game together. In a sense I feel like it is the loot at the end of a dungeon. A good story makes people want to progress through areas of the game that might have otherwise seemed too bland to do so on the merits of gameplay alone. When this question is asked I am fondly reminded of my experience playing a PS2 game – Ace Combat 5. AC5 is a flight combat simulator; a genre of game which I would usually never play. However; the game featured an amazing storyline, involving enough for me to play through the mediocre gameplay.

3) I don’t think this can necessarily be seen as an either/or situation. IMO this has a lot to do with how the storywriters portray the protagonist. Traditionally in a game I’d say there are two ways – you either have a character with a specific personality that the audience can relate to as their ‘vessel’ in the game world. Final Fantasy games and JRPGS in general often do this. Character interactions are paramount here because these are the interactions that will be felt by the player. Secondly you can have a blank slate character – this is a character who is carried by the story and events of the game. Their interaction to other characters is less important, because they are merely the eyes of the audience seeing the world unfold.

I think the problem with the GW2 story is that it tries to do both. The first half of the game features an intense character driven story; the upbringing of your character into hero-hood, and their development into the battle with Zhaitan. Then the game takes a turn into the second scenario I described; your protagonist becomes extremely out of touch and not in control of the events around them; merely the eyes of the audience viewing Trahearne’s story.

4) I must say I rarely ‘identify’ with my character, even if it was in a story that was written very well. I think its just in my nature not to since I always make female characters.

5) I believe that the character’s progression is the doings of the game itself. Even in games with a greater aptitude for decision making; e.g. Mass Effect, I often feel these decisions I make are usually governed by gameplay aspects. For instance; if two branches of the story offered different rewards pertaining to the gameplay, I’d likely choose the one that aided my gameplay most. My completionist attitude would dictate that I replay the game to see the other branch also, thus, it is rarely a choice made from a story driven approach.

6) I think most of the time I’m just ‘there for the ride’; i.e. I just want to see how the story unfolds, rarely do I share the same sense of ‘heroism’ that the character might have or the need to save the world.

7) I thought the instance method was a mediocre way of telling the story. I think guild wars 1, did this better with more elaborate maps and settings for the story missions. Often in Guildwars 2, I’m led to some cave in some remote location that have very little to do with the environment around it. Just recently I did a story mission that involved going into a cave to summon a spirit of a pirate. It just felt very unnecessary – theres nothing really special about the cave apart from the NPC saying that it was special, and tbh, I felt like it was something that could be done in another area in the game.

8) I don’t mind it. They serve the same purpose as nameless NPCs imo, with better battle proficiency.

9) TBH, I feel the story was so poorly written I can’t really even give a proper answer for this question. Coming out of it I felt nothing; not a shred of excitement or accomplishment (it felt like an ordeal). The world hardly seem changed; the home instance remained the same as it ever did. Now normally I wouldn’t expect anything different, a lot of games stop at this point and don’t have a ‘the world changed forever’ scenario but GW2 was advertised to be that game which did have these things, and I feel it has none of this.

Now that I’ve answered all your questions, I’d like you to answer one of mine! I’m a movie critique enthusiast myself, and one critique I especially enjoy (and is very relevant in your studies of character and story) is a lengthy review of Star Wars episode 1 by a man who goes by the pseudonym of Harry Plinkett. I was wondering if you’ve watched it before.

http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/star-wars/star-wars-episode-1-the-phantom-menace/

(the language is quite vulgar though, for comedic value)
The method in which he dissects the characters can also be applied here, and on that note I’d say the characters in gw2 are very dull, which impacts the story and makes it rather dull and not involving.

Hell why even have levels in the first place. Why is Orr “gated content”? I don’t have the time to get my Mesmer to 80, I want to run Arah at level 10?

If you accept the concept of levels in MMOs, you must accept the concept of gear progression as well.

Anet has to keep people interested in the game.

If you want a static environment, play sPVP, or play a single player game.

I can only speak for myself, but gear progression stops being interesting for me at max level because I realize that I’m not actually making my character stronger. I’m just keeping up with the monsters, which are only getting stronger to keep up with the need to make me work for more gear. It’s fun up to cap because my character is actually growing. What keeps me interested after that is new content, new gameplay modes, new areas, and so on. I have left other games because all resources have to go to making new endgame encounters and gear to keep people who must continue improving their characters in order to stay interested busy.

There is no difference in progress pre-80 versus post-80.

One is stat increases from experience, and the other is stat increases from drops.

Both drops and experience comes from killing mobs, doing hearts DE’s etc.

Maybe you can prance around at 80 and pick flowers, but like I’ve already said in this thread, when I invest my time and money into an MMO, it is to see my ‘guy’ stronger when I log off than when I logged in. I doubt I am alone here.

What makes leveling interesting for me is the ability to visit new areas and access more content as I get higher level. To a lesser extent, it’s things like traits and skills which let me change the way I play. Just because I’m not attached to watching numbers tick up doesn’t mean I want to prance around picking flowers at max level.

I get the vertical versus horizontal progression argument. I think there is a bit of burnout in the MMO community on sheer vertical progression after level cap. I think that is in part why you see people on these forums jumping down Anets throat for this new gear level (which c’mon guys, is fairly trivial).

The problem is that there is no progression at all in this game at level cap, neither vertical nor horizontal.

Shortly after level 30, I’ve unlocked nearly every single weapon and utility skill I will ever get. That’s pathetic.

At level 60 I’ve unlocked the top traits for my class, and that is artificially held back because each trait line is only 30 points.

I want something to play for. I like exploration too, but that only holds my attention for so long. I can never get more skills, so the only way I can improve is newer, and better gear.

Oh, there was no progression at level 80? Tell me more about how you maxed all your WvW, PvP, and PvE titles. Tell me about how you have acquired your Legendary. Hell, I’ll even settle for one of the rarer exotics, let’s say Volcanus. How long did it take you to max every crafting profession? Do you even have 100% world completion? Have you done every dungeon? Can you do every ounce of content in the game without being downed once? Because I can, and if you can’t, then your SKILL hasn’t progressed as far as it could have if you would actually learn to play this game rather than begging for SKILL to be subsidized for you via stat buffs and numerical superiority.

Once I have full exotics, all you have listed is cosmetic.

I’m not interested in cosmetic progression.

I’ve said it many times this thread. I want my character to be better than it was when I logged in, when I log off.

While I can agree that some people may like this, this is not what was advertised before launch, hence many people are angry. Tbh, I’m surprised you bought this game if this what you are interested in.

Karka slayer is very quick to do if you know how to do it.

Look for a Veteran Karka mob that can ‘lay eggs’.
Approach and aggro it.
It will lay 2 batches of eggs; wait til they hatch, kill them for about 10 kills.
If you get downed kill the hatchlings to rally.

This is best done with about 2 people just in-case you get killed, but can also be managed with 1. Tone down your aoe damage so you can both aoe tag them.

One thing. Just one.

The gear treadmill in this game is like exercising for 20 min in real life. It is easy. It is short. And you just do it because it is overall good for you.

Any complaints are basically people upset that they finished exercising while others are just now arriving at the gym.

If we get to the point that it takes a month to gear up, then I’ll worry. I’m not going to worry that it takes a few days. I’m the slowest person ever to make money and karma, and I had no problem getting an Orr set. And this was before the dailies reward Karma! Oh so much easier on alts!

It will take the majority of players a month to get ONE Ascended piece. If they’re lucky.

ONE

PIECE.

Out of a total of 14-16 (depending on whether you use two-handed weapons or main-hand/offhand).

You may commence worrying.

TBH, it doesn’t I am within reach of 2 pieces already. Its a matter of forking out a ton of gold (i need about 70 more powerful vials of blood). And unless I’m unlucky level 10 fotm will grant me a ring which might not have the stats I want. Its just unnecessary grind. Do i feel closer to getting a legendary? Nope. Could I do without them? Yes. Totally balltastically unnecessary.

I really cant see why anyone would bother with Guildwars 2 treadmill when WoW treadmill works better…

You’ve got to be joking.
In WoW, not only do you have grind and RNG, you get to top it off with a Raid Leader, Guild Master, Loot Council, or Ninja Looter that determines whether you even get a chance at the gear.

It’s dreadful.

GW2 is miles ahead of WoW in this respect and so many others.

Actually he has a point. WoW treadmill items are at least innovative with what effects the armor sets do.

Not $180 a year innovative effects.

That’s IF you even get it after the RNG, Raid Leader, Guild Master, Loot Council, and Ninja Looter have had their first shot at it. Let’s not forget you only get this lovely chance at a chance once a week.

You have to be a masochist to play that game.
There’s a reason that GW2’s popularity is soaring.

Yeah, soaring. So much so this forum is singing it with praise. So much so that there’s still 10 million subscribers in WoW.

You can submit that, I don’t know detail about the mechanics. But I do know one thing. Many of you have misled players about the effect of Agony on the game. Now we find progression existed in GW1, at whatever the level, and yet this somehow does not apply. Even when a dev states Lightbringer was just another method players had to filter out those they want to play with. This is exactly the same thing, and you all know it is.

Hey, I could care less if none of you agree or see the point. But now I know from my own research that your complaints are baseless, and this game with thrive. I hope others aren’t affected by the negativity we’ve seen the last several days. That’s my point.

Wow, I thought they didn’t allow trolling on these forums, I sure feel trolled here. Vertical progression <> horizontal progression. It would behoove you to learn what the difference is before spouting nonsense here. Everyone has a pair of rose tinted glasses, it takes the well informed to not wear them. No I didn’t play GW1, but I don’t need to when I have a wiki and a dev post at my disposal. No matter how you slice it, this was a form of progession, horizontal or otherwise. It applies, my friends. And didn’t the devs say that anyone could gain Ascended gear by means other than running the dungeon? By multiple methods, I do believe I read that.

House of cards. Doesn’t stand for very long.

No one has a problem with horizontal progression. Not only do you not understand the counter argument you’re making, you don’t even understand the issue.

Fail. Lightbringer only affected AI. It does not affect how you interact with other players in combat. Not to mention the real gem of lightbringer related activities were the PVE skills that came with it, the title itself was a quality of life issue. GW1 nightfall was not balanced around people with max Lightbringer, it was balanced around people with rudimentary levels of it.

Ascended gear? Nope. You’ll crit 2% more per piece of gear if you use it compared to someone decked out in exotics. Real significant changes in WvW. Now GW2 will be balanced around, you guessed it, this new tier.

Quoting you both as you both make the same argument, essentially, and miss the same issue.

The issue is not with -current- content. No Ascended gear is required to finish every dungeon and kill every boss currently walking Tyria.

The issue is with -future- content. It was stated, when Ascended gear was announced, that Agony (and thus Agony resist) was something that would be involved in content going forward. It was not stated, one way or the other, if it would be required to even attempt future content, and it therefore becomes a simple question: grind Ascended and Agony resist now, so you are ready for the new content no matter what, or wait and see if it will be required, and hope that, if it is, enough other people waited that you can get groups to grind it out.

It is true that as of this moment in time, the grind heavy gear is not required to see any of the content in the game. But we don’t know when or if it will be, and Anet has not said one way or the other. A lot of folks saying it is required are basically taking the cautious path, assuming it will be and preparing for the worst.

The issue with this is that ArenaNet could have easily made this content require Agony resistance from the beginning as well, by making it some Mystic Forge thing and introducing Agony at fractal level 1. They didn’t; heck, they even made it so low levels can participate. Exotics aren’t even a requirement for the early difficulty levels. If they didn’t do it now, why do you think they’re magically going to start doing it in the future? None of the content in GW2 has been restricted like that. There is zero indication of ArenaNet ever restricting content like that, and it’s simply not helpful to base your argument on an assumption that they’ll magically start doing it.

AHHAHA You really think they did that for the players? Its just there to draw out the content, an additional carrot on another stick. Oh you want to see what agony is like? Hit me up 10 levels.

The Agony mechanic wasn’t introduced at the start of the dungeon so that everybody can experience the content. While one of the goals of the Fractals of the Mists dungeon was to provide some difficult content for players looking for a challenge, we also wanted the dungeon to be available for everybody to experience. While getting far into the dungeon requires agony resistance from ascended gear, the content was designed to provide challenging content, and to allow players to choose what difficulty they wanted to play at.

As for ascended gear, to reiterate what Chris has said (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/news/A-message-from-our-Studio-Design-Director-Chris-Whiteside), it’s not intended as a treadmill, but rather as a tier of rewards that can help bridge the gap between Exotics (a few hours of effort to acquire a piece) and Legendaries (hundreds of hours of effort to acquire one). They’re currently only available in the Fractals of the Mist Dungeon, but we’re going to be adding new ways to acquire them, both inside of WvW as well as elsewhere in PvE.

Can we stop reiterating the PR spin story, please? I’m not the only one on this forum that sees that article for what it is. Its like you’re handing me an orange, then telling me its not an orange. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed a 10000+ post topic in this very forum that deals with the issues of the implementation of ascended gear, and how not only has it created a gap where one wasn’t present before, it completely obliterates your own manifesto.

How does ascended gear bridge this new gap btw? Can they be used to create the legendary weapons? Nope. But if they COULD, I might buy your story. Currently, getting ascended gear and getting legendary weapons require completely different efforts. This is as much as a bridge as a fork in the road going completely in another direction.

I’m pretty sure letting players experience content rather than restricting them from it is done for the players, yes.

They gave you 10 levels without agony so you they can extend the same kitten content for longer. The byproduct of this is so that its friendly to casuals. Don’t believe everything you hear from their blog posts. If they cared about not restricting content they wouldn’t restrict it at all.

Where’s the gear grind? You mean playing the game? That’s grinding now? Sheesh.

You complain about gear you don’t want (or need) because playing the content the gear is needed for is a grind. You don’t need the gear because you’re not grinding (playing) it, but you’re upset it’s there because other people do want to play the content that requires it?

What’s your point again?

The difference between play and grind is in quantity. Having to run a dungeon a few times to get what you’re after is playing. Having to run said dungeon a few -dozen- times becomes more than a little grindy, at least as a lot of people see it.

When you repeat a dungeon for the umpteenth time because it has an item you require, you are not doing that dungeon for fun, you are grinding it for gain. THAT IS GEAR GRIND.

Except it doesn’t have an item you require, it has an item you want. It has an item made specifically for going deeper and deeper into the dungeon you acquire it from. If you want an item made for an infinitely scaling dungeon that you don’t actually want to participate in, then that’s a problem with your own specific priorities. Not a problem with the game.

Lol, that’s completely wrong. The items have about 15% better stats that will apply to every other aspect of the game save sPvP.

That doesn’t make it a requirement to anyone but children and elitists.

Cool, with that argument you can defend Arenanet to the death once they introduce Ascended gear on the gem store.

“Why would I play WoW 2. If I wanted to grind for gear every day i could stay at WoW.”

It’s funny how us unwashed masses seem to able to understand this but a “professional” development team completely fails to grasp such a basic concept.

The hilarious thing is, if we compare gear grinds, WoW is WAY more fun. Each tier of gear actually comes with unique-ish effects, unlike a plain stat boost in this game. Heck I might actually play WoW now!

I used up all 3 of my invites. One even bought the game instead of using the trial due to Anet’s confusing error messages.

After losing all faith in Anet, I 100% regret doing so.

Let him know he has 30 days to refund it.

My group of 23 friends who joined the game, only I actively play now. I was going to ask 2 of them to pop in for the 3 day event, since they did so for Halloween, but nope, not going to do that either. I don’t try to sell crap to friends.

I’m excited too.I can’t wait for the new items.

Well, you literally can’t wait around to get them no. In fact, go run that new dungeon, about 2000 times.

For me, it’s not the greatest thing I’ve ever heard of but it’s definitely not the end of the world as some people on the forums see it as. Of course, we would have to go through more trouble to pick up these items and yes, it could have been implemented in a better way. However, they have arrived and probably are here to stay. What we, the fans of this game, can do is to make the best of what we are given and lead our developers in the right direction instead of quitting.

Although the personal storyline lacked the uniqueness that it advertised, it is our money that determines the outcome of this game. If we choose to keep supporting the game we love and assist our developers to make this game better, I believe that Guild Wars 2 can become an entity that we can all love for years to come.

The thing is, I don’t think we owe them that much. I was at the ‘support the dev through their dark days’ stage about a month ago. The blog thread at least gave hope these items weren’t just stat upgrades but i see thats not true either
