WHY IS QUOTING ALWAYS BROKEN?

@Jiverooster:

Bad comparison, PVP tends to remain fun longer because it’s not really repetition, it’s not scripted, people adopt different strategies.

Comparing PVE content to competitive play in First Person Shooters or RTS is just not a good comparison.

Do you know people who play single player starcraft campaigns over and over? Probably not. That’s a better comparison.

Eventually repetition kills the enjoyment and they stop.

For me, the worst part of the Human and Norn stories is that the main characters just feel like total do-gooder wusses. There is no “renegade” sort of route. Even if you choose something like Street Rat and Ferocious, you’re some happy pleasant do-gooder. It just feels bad.

I remember this one Norn story where I actually listened to a guy threaten to kill me that had killed a bunch of people in some cave, and then told him some sappy heroic do-gooder line about how I wasn’t going to kill him or some nonsense.

I just really miss traditional RPG story telling where you can actually have that “bad a__” (p.s. someone wanna tell me why ‘bad’ + a 3 letter word for donkey is censored?) kind of feel to a character if you want to go that route, rather than being locked into a total do-gooder no matter what you choose. It just feels like even if there are 3 options, right now all they really do is say something a different way without any real effect.

Charr is a LITTLE bit better about that. It’s never about being a hero or a good guy, it’s about doing your duty.

so many people simply don’t understand what the RPG in MMORPG means. The definition of it isn’t difficult to grasp but the meaning seems to be elusive to most players.

It means playing a game where you can role play. It means customisation. It’s a fantasy sim. What value a mmorpg when customisation is considered evil; and yes, the gear grind is part of that customisation. Too many people are too caught up in the WoW raid mentality to understand that you don’t need to get things to progress to the next step of something else. You can get it because it progresses your toon. The carrot is not evil.

You guys call this a “carrot”, when all it is is customisation/character progression. Whether that be cosmetic or stats based loot is exactly the same thing. You guys are arguing against the very things you are arguing for.

RPG’s need customisation. Otherwise don’t bother making an MMO. Just create a lobby and a ring for fighting (like gw 1) and let’s not pretend like it is actually anything more than a multiplayer game.

You can not argue against the carrot and progression and say that you are an MMORPG player or even that the game is an MMORPG. As far as “RPG” goes, GW2 is very. very shallow.

Have a go at LOTRO to understand what an MMORPG is and what the RPG part of it means. You may or may not like that game but the RPG elements of it are solid and well thought out. In fact, it could be argued that LOTRO’s world is designed to be more meaningful for explorers despite it offering no tangible rewards.

R . P . G

It’s not the gear grind that would make the game better, I mean there are customization options, unless you don’t care if your character looks awful… I’m actually quite happy that the difference between something I can craft/buy and something that I can get out of a dungeon is just skin deep.

It’s that the skins are not universally appealing, so for someone who doesn’t want a skin, there’s no reason to do the challenging content 30+ times.

I’m advocating other rewards should be found for those people. Currency is a start, or lodestones/ectoplasms.

if you eat a tenderloin steak every single day.. it stops tasting so good.

You’ve clearly never eaten at a Brazilian steakhouse.

Should you ever find yourself in the Philadelphia, PA area, might I recommend a place that would change your mind.

http://www.nabrasa.com/

I could eat there. Every. Single. Day.

I’m going to call your bluff.

Pick your favorite item on the menu, and eat only that, every single day for a month.

You’ll be so sick of it after a week that you’ll want anything but that.

Devildoc.6721

Gear progression based rewards being the only incentive to play is a community issue, not the developers,

Gaming should be about the journey, but a high % of gamers only care about the reward,
Been reading through complaint threads today and saw one person say,
“I like SPVP but because I already have the best gear I dont see a point doing it”

I dunno, fun? balanced skill based competition? skill development? fun?!

Just seems like a massive flaw in peoples mindset, why “grind” a system, most likely not enjoying yourself along the way, just to obtain a set you wont use anymore once youve completed it cause theres nothing else to “gain”?

Personally allowing easy(ish) access to full exotics to most players is a perfect system,
Allowing players to heavliy out stat each other would destroy WvW and the way mobs work in zones and discourage skilled players who simply dont have the time,

The grinds for cosmetic rewards is perfect, farming the 30g t3 chestpiece for sylvari atm and cant wait to get it!

The community mindset needs to change not the developers,

And seriously if you want gear based progression so bad, why not play every other mmo ever?

Here’s something you have to realize.

Fun has diminishing returns.

The more you repeat something, the less fun it is.

This is universal across any activity, no matter how fun it is at first, after you do it again and again and again.. it starts to tail off. I thought sex might be the one thing that deviates from that pattern but hey.. only if it’s not the same partner every single time… but anyway.. if you eat a tenderloin steak every single day.. it stops tasting so good.

“fun” and “the journey” stop being enough when you’re left repeating content you’ve already done.

No game can make enough novel content to never have repetition, therefore, extra incentive is needed.

How to solve botting at events.

in Suggestions

Posted by: Devildoc.6721

Devildoc.6721

Here’s an idea, it’d eliminate a huge portion of the bots you see spamming their 1 skill at defense events.

Up the coin that is dropped from kills, and eliminate the coin reward for event success/failure.

The bots don’t loot corpses.

You’d still have some lazy people botting for karma/exp, but not nearly as many as the gold spammer site bots farming money.

If they're still standing there shooting after the event, report them.

People botting are ruining dynamic events, they’re pretty easy to spot, just anyone standing spamming their 1 skill endlessly even when there’s no event going on, never moving, just spamming 1.

Just target them
Right Click their portrait
Select report at the bottom
and select botting.

Hopefully Anet does their part in actually punishing them.

I love steal, but I wish we had F2-F4 too.

in Thief

Posted by: Devildoc.6721

there are a few classes that only have F1 actually. not all of the class mechanics need multiple buttons.

Warriors just have the single F1 button to make their burst attack. the rest of the class mechanic is managed more passively through things related to accumulating Adrenaline.

Necromancers also just have the single F1 button, to go into Death Shroud mode. similar to Warriors burst attack, the rest of the mechanic is managed more passively through things related to accumulating Life Force.

and similarly the Thief also just has the single F1 button to Steal, with the rest of the interactions with the class mechanic occurring passively with the Traits to make Steal do extra stuff.
————————
edit: idea for actually using F2-F4

one of the better suggestions I’ve read from other posters on this forum is to have the extra slots act as storage for stolen item/abilities. For example F1 would always be the steal button, and it would deposit a stolen skill in the next available storage slot. you’d press F2, F3, or F4 to use the stolen item stored in that slot.

from a design perspective i feel like that would be an elegant and flavorful use of the other F buttons. i do think it would be kinda overpowered though.

Well Necro has multiple skills come up after they use their F1. Death Shroud has its own skill set.

Engineer, Mesmer, Ele, Ranger have F1-F4, Guardian has F1-F3, and Necro has only F1 but it grants you multiple skills

Only Warrior is in our same boat.

So far, I like my Idea for at least an F2 skill, for ranged thieves.

name it Shadow Escape, or Smoke Powder Defense, or something like that.
Shadow steps 600 units directly away from target and cloaks in stealth for 3s.

Shares cooldown with steal.

There’s enough stealth benefitting traits that you wouldn’t even need to modify the steal traits to include it.

GW2 is Fun-Centric, not Reward-Centric

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Devildoc.6721

NEWSFLASH!

GW2 has a power plateau! its easy to get to. This was advertised many many many many times before release. Either get used to it or get out. It will not change, and us GW2 players do not want it to change. This game is different from most other games, its kinda why we like it.

Yes, and that’s fine, my main complaint, is that explorable mode dungeons, and jumping puzzles, and large scale meta events, reward paltry amounts of silver/copper.

I’m fine with the armor/weapons from explorable dungeons being no better than crafted pieces aside from looks. That’s fine.

The problem lies in 1 person wants a specific look, another person wants a different look, and another person doesn’t like any of the dungeon looks. Now how do you go about telling these people to run dungeons with you… it’s begging. They’ll run it for “fun” maybe once or twice, then they’ll be tired of it and will have to sludge through it for your sake for another 30 runs. That’s AWFUL design.

Make it worth their time too. Ideally, at least compensate more in game money. Ideally I believe there should be a daily explorable dungeon achievement that rewards 1 gold.

Would that be asking too much? Do 1 dungeon per day, get a gold, plus whatever drops in the dungeon. I think i could convince people easier to run dungeons if there was that.

This game is so tightfisted about awarding currency, the only real way to make money is to play the AH instead of playing the game.

GW1, yes, power traders still made the most money, but quests still gave decent money. Doing a DOA run you’d net about 50 platinum between quest reward and dropped gold.. Not counting the gemstones which you could sell to other players or save up for a handfull of runs (like 6) for an armbrace or tormented weapon which you could also sell to other players.

Here you run, get like 30s and get a bunch of SOULBOUND stuff that you can’t trade.

Unless you actually want the cosmetics for the weapon or armor, or need the gift for a legendary, or the sigil/rune, which, most of the time the sigils are terrible and the runes are not as good as runes you can get elsewhere…. dungeons aren’t worth running more than twice per path.

I totally agree with you. They need to add loadstones, ectos or some other desirable to the dungeon vendors so if you dont want the cosmetics you at least can spend your tokens on something. In general dungeons are to much of a grind right now and Anet has already said that they are changing that.

My post was not directed at people like you, but people who want fundamental changes to the core concepts of GW2. Of course they are going to tweak things.

buy ectos and lodestones for dungeon tokens? I could get behind that.

They need to not be soulbound though.

Ectos cost roughly 2 bosses worth of tokens, lodestones roughly 1 full run, something like that.

GW2 is Fun-Centric, not Reward-Centric

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Devildoc.6721

You don’t HAVE to pay 20 gold for exotics now, so I’m guessing you won’t HAVE to do it again. You can play just fine without exotics, and get gear a bunch of other ways. Also, if you’re playing for fun, over time you’ll build up enough money or karma or whatever to get anything you want in the game. Long-term goals that actually take a long time are fine with me. I don’t need to have all the best gear in a month…because I’m enjoying playing the game primarily, and rewards are a natural result over time.

If they add more levels, you’ll get to keep playing exactly the same way you have…having fun and enjoying the content. If you don’t enjoy levels 1-80 in this game for what they are, and are just rushing to get to some place you think will be better…you might as well quit the game. It is what it is, and doesn’t change into something else at max level or in expansions or any time.

We know it’s not a gear treadmill, and never will be. I’ll get top-stat gear eventually through multiple different means without even focusing on it, and I’ll never NEED top stat gear to do any of the content (other than the natural leveling curve). If I CHOOSE to go after a specific look, that’s entirely my decision, and is not required in any way…and there is no ladder of tiers of gear that I’m forced to climb in order to unlock content, and there never will be. I’m so glad there’s one game like this, finally.

Saying that I don’t understand because I’m below level 80 is nonsense. The game doesn’t change at level 80…it just continues. You are the one who doesn’t understand, because you rushed to level 80 expecting there to be something there that ArenaNet always said there wouldn’t be. They made it entirely crystal clear throughout their marketing how the game would work and what it would be like, and some of us understood it completely before we ever even played. If it’s coming as a surprise to you…sorry, but you’re the one with the issue. I got (and am getting) exactly what I expected (a fun-centric game), and I love it. When I get to level 80, the entire world will be open to me to explore and enjoy events and help out other players. In other words, to just have fun and not constantly be banging my head worrying about whether I’m getting maximum rewards.

People who are confining themselves to a couple of zones at level 80 because they refuse to play the game without constantly getting maximum rewards are missing the point and ruining their own fun.

Guess what dude, the content is finite, you WILL end up exhausting it all and be left with repetition. It is inevitable.

You think I got to level 80 and just started complaining?

No, I did every zone 100%, even got the explorer deeds to 100%, I’ve even done every jumping puzzle in the game. I’ve found just about every nook and cranny and detail and tucked away chest. I’ve done WvW, I’ve done dungeons (aside from every branch in explorable mode, and Arah, which I’m waiting for the fix to the loot to do for my PS), I’ve done all the meta events in game, and done a fair share of just the events in game I could find.

I’m down to repetition, in other words.

I’d finish up the dungeons… except for explorable mode is designed around having an organized team, not a PuG, and the reason why it’s hard to convince guildies to do them is because they just lack reward. Challenge without reward is just a stupid design. Every challenge in GW1 had rewards to go along with it, why change that?

Why Charr Have the Best Story *1-30 Spoilers*

in Personal Story

Devildoc.6721

I don’t find the stories all that bad. I’m OK with the presentation, dialogue and voice acting for the most part. However, I don’t find them all that engaging. I never really feel invested in them and always play through them as kind of a detached observer. This is because the stories seem to be written in a very PG manner, which is not something that is generally going to command my attention. They don’t grab me by the throat and drag me into them, which would be my preference.

For instance, my favorite story from Guild Wars was about Lady Althea, primarily what happened after the Searing. And it’s not because I enjoyed but because it kicked me in the gut and made me angry. I still hold a weird grudge against the charr because of it, but that’s because the story bit deep. I don’t find the ones in GW2 are capable of evoking the same level of emotion, so are far more forgettable. Years and years later, I still remember Lady Althea.

Somethng I mentioned back in Beta was that characters in Tyria don’t swear, and that always strikes me as odd when we’re talking about any kind of fiction. You show me an entire town where not one person ever swears in it.

It simply does not exist.

They might not swear using the words WE recognize as swearing, but in every language, every culture, there are “curse words” devised for the same purposes (expressing pain or anger/frustration/stress) that have the same taboo in their culture as any word replaced by “kitten” on these forums.

It seems… very unrealistic and unimmersive for Tyrians not to have such words or expressions.

The closest I’ve heard was “By Ogden’s Hammer! What savings!”

I don’t even know what I’d put in those slots, but it just seems like there’s something missing. I mean when you think about it, steal just gives you things you can also find in the environment (default steal anyway).. it’s fun but, what if you’re playing from range and don’t want to shadowstep to get in melee? What if you want something for sure instead of a gamble?

I was just thinking we could have some more tricks up our sleeve, maybe even share Steal’s cooldown so you would have to pick which one of those tricks you’d use, but have some more options.. kinda like mesmer’s shatters.. they share the same resource (clones) but have different effects. You choose whether to stack some confusion (admittingly not long enough duration and not enough stacks per clone), daze (somewhat same problem here), invincibility, or just plain damage.

Just not sure what those tricks would actually be, to make them on level with how good steal COULD be if traited for it.

Maybe a class mechanic stealth on that 32-45s cooldown, 3s, a stealth with a shadow step directly away from your target, like viper’s defense from GW1 except it’s a stealth rather than a poison.. maybe “Smoke Powder Defense” like the GW1 skill for a name.

Maybe a stun, a 1s stun (Basilisk venom would still be better as it can’t be removed, and can be shared with other people), like a blackjack or a Rochambeau (Cartman style). I don’t know. I don’t know enough to actually make a suggestion about it, that’s why I’m asking you… the thief community… what would you have our F2-F4 skills be if we had them?

in Personal Story

Devildoc.6721

I don’t know if my post will ever get seen by anyone in ArenaNet, but this is my honest opinion.

A lot of valid points have been mentioned in the previous posts, but I really think what the story is missing is cohesiveness and depth. I think it was a huge misstep to introduce the personal story as a branching storyline where your choices act as branches. I also think it was a misstep to introduce the cutscene system as it ruins immersion and takes out the opportunity to use the environment or bodily expressions. This is a flawed system for several reasons:

  • Players do not receive a consistent story – In branching storylines, it is easier for players to gather different opinions due to the fact their experiences are so different. One story arc may be very cleverly designed while another story arc may lack the emotional depth a satisfying story needs. This can cause problems when trying to pinpoint problems in the plot and delivery. It also causes confusion when other players use word of mouth to spread the word about the story.
  • One, strong, epic storyline is better than five mediocre ones The story needs depth. IMO, the story in its current state does not make you feel like a hero. I feel like that elements that made the first Guild Wars story so memorable are missing. Because of the depth and scope of the story, events like when you carry the Eye of Janthir to Maguuma, only to discover the White Mantle is murdering the Chosen stay imprinted in the viewer’s mind. Or the trials of the Crystal Desert. Or the moment you take back Thunderhead Keep from the Mursaat and you set sail to Perdition Rock. These moments stand out because of the way they were designed: it contains depth. You missed the opportunity to create these types of memorable experiences for newcomers to the series by creating these convoluted storylines. The only memorable experience I will take from the personal story is following Trahearne into the vision of the Pale Tree to see your future in Orr. I hope your team takes this as a learning experience and vastly improves the story. I really wish I liked it :\.
  • Longer development time due to design choices Although most ends were tied well in the personal story, there is room for error. This causes development time to become much larger than normal and can introduce future errors. It also creates a mess when dealing with future extensions to a story. Also, introducing a cutscene system where characters are placed to a backdrop abruptly cuts the actions and there are many missed opportunities

Other complaints are things like elements of the story are very childish and do not seem to cater to an older audience. For example, Destiny’s Edge sounds like a bunch of a whiners and they all act childish. I don’t understand how the writing for this game could’ve let this happen?

I disagree strongly. The branching nature of the early part of the story is quite simply the best part, people have different experiences, because they chose differently. It also gives replay value as when you make someone of a different class, you make different character creation options and have a totally different story.

The problem lies in the 50+ story content merging together to have a single story. That ruins it. It makes you feel like your choices no longer matter, and takes away replay value.

Let’s be honest, while the story in the original guild wars was alright…..

the first time you did it.

On subsequent characters everyone spammed “SKIP CINEMATICS”

So this time, I’ll end up playing through each character paying attentiion to the first 30 levels of story, and for 3 characters I’ll pay attention to the 30-50 story.

But on every character from now on since I already did 1 character….

I’ll be skipping cinematics because it’ll all be the same as my first character.

4. My Charr was an engineer, so building ghost-killing turrets and rifles fit right into my character’s class from the get-go.

Ohnoes.
Does that mean every class invents the Ghostbore?
Thanks for the warning. My 1st Charr was an engineer too and I was debating to roll a Charr Warrior or Necromancer next. Guess the Necro is out, as he can´t even use a rifle which to me it would just break this whole storyarc.

Hope you guys polish up inconsistencies like this.

It’s determined by Legion.

it can be assumed, that when the teams were writing the stories, they had classes in mind for them.

Blood Legion: Warriors, to a lesser extent Guardians, and to a lesser extent well, any class CAN fit into this storyline without feeling out of place. You’re a front line soldier, it’s straight forward enough.

Iron Legion: Engineer, every other class will feel a little odd as an “inventor” in the storyline. However for Engineer this storyline is tailor made and is the most fitting story for an Engineer (the Asura ones falling in second). You’re jury rigging specially made rifles from scrap metal, then your idea is expanded to other applications, and you perform testing on these weapons. What else could an Engineer want?

Ash Legion: Thieves are the primary draw here, however Rangers and Mesmers will also fit in this legion without missing a beat. You’re intelligence, you’re spying, and while thieves are the obvious stealthy spy type, Mesmers can also fill the same role just as well. They have stealth and they also have the “silver tongue” needed for espionage (think of James Bond, part of his job was being undetected, and part of his job was socializing and mingling and getting people to talk by trusting him when they shouldnt… with that in mind I think Ash Legion soldiers should be charmers). Rangers are a slightly lesser fit, however rangers are commonly scouts and independent operatives (aside from their pets) so they also fit in well.

Charr Necromancers and Elementalists are the hardest fit, as none of the stories feel like it tailors to their profession. Charr don’t really trust magic, they use it, as they’re pragmatic, but your storyline will never center around it.

Pistols definitely should NOT get 1200 range. They are a skirmishing weapon, designed to be paired with daggers and swords. You should not be able to both fire at 1200 range and have the solid melee options the other weapons provide.

People asking for shortbow to be 1200 range are being very unrealistic. You’re asking for AOE at a 1200 range. You will never get it.

Single target 1200 range is more reasonable.

Not every attack in the Shortbow arsenal would need to be raised to 1200, Most ranged weapons in the game have variable ranges to them. All of the Ranger Shortbow skills are at 1200 range, and at least one Thief Shortbow skill is already at 1200 (and it’s an AoE), so adding a few more wouldn’t be ridiculous.

Okay let’s just take pistols out of thieve’s arsenal then if you want to continue to make shortbow increasingly better than them.

Right now pistols only have an edge on single target damage where you can just stand there and pew pew.

They need something.

Often times, when I find myself inadvertently training mobs, it’s usually because I want to head to an event before it ends in hopes of a getting a Gold reward, especially when the event is almost over. Depending on some situations, I have a tendency to value Karma and XP over any drops that the trained mobs could potentially drop. Sorry about that, but I’d like my Karma and XP.

On the other hand, I play a GS Warrior outside of dungeons, a rather overpowered glass cannon spec capable of critting with 100 Blades between 20 to 32k. Since almost all trained mobs are normal mobs, they die relatively quick.

Just thought I’d point out you’re actually doing less damage than that. Attacks that are a combination of hits show the damage over the entire combo, not the damage per hit. That’s why the damage looks like it’s increasing on every hit. You’re not doing 10 hits that go from 600 to 9000 damage per hit, you’re seeing a combo that totals about 9000 damage.

in Personal Story

Posted by: Devildoc.6721

Devildoc.6721

I’m going to have to agree that I enjoyed the Charr stories from 1-30 best as well. It feels more plausible you might say, due to the military nature of all the stories. You get a set of orders, you complete those orders, you’re dismissed, you get some more orders, you never think “why would my character be doing this, what’s to be gained?”. The recruiting of warband members was also something I just really liked, along with the male Charr voice acting (seriously yes, Mr. Yuan did a great job, I feel like a badkitten every time I play and hear my character). The fact that I had choice in my company was a big step towards enjoying the story. I do kind of wish all of our warband members were in our home instance… 1 is missing for me.

I did Ash Legion, I chose Dinky, so he’s there (and I miss him being in the rest of my story, I’d have enjoyed the rest of the story more if my whole Warband was with me in the order rather than just me), I have Yahuk Fellstrike, and I can find him.. my turncoat father got pardoned, and I can find him.. as welll as I can find the “blacksmith” that recruited me to the Order of Whispers…. but in my Ash Legion storyline, I recruited a chatterbox Engineer, Samona Ironclaw.

I can’t find her anywhere in Hero’s Canton… and she didn’t come with me on missions either. I recruited her… then she disappeared…

Oh well, no storyline is perfect.

But anyway I liked that I was recruiting people to back me up.

Humans are just cheesy all around, you do know their /dance right?

Charr say pretty simple things where you say “I could outrun a centaur!” or “eat my dust!” my Charr says “Faster!”

No love for condition builds?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Devildoc.6721

Devildoc.6721

What’s needed is some different stat mixes, some new insignias.. maybe using 4 and 4 or 10 and 5 or 3 and 2 instead of 8, 15, and 5 for the various insignias.

Stat mixes I think are needed:

Condition Damage
Precision
Vitality

Condition Damage
Precision
Magic Find

Condition Damage
Precision
Toughness

Condition Damage
Toughness
Vitality

Condition Damage
Vitality
Magic Find

etc.

Not many people get use out of both power AND condition damage on the same set. Thieves can, because they might be like me… using a sword pistol (power based) but both of your ranged options require some condition damage in order to function. (Carrion’s if you use stealth a lot and get 100% crit chance out of stealth.. rampagers if you need precision for crit.), but Precision and Condition Damage are often complimentary because of traits/sigils that proc conditions on crits.

on the power side of things, it’d be nice to have Power Precision Vitality as another option rather than Power Precision Toughness.

"Training" Mobs, What is it and STOP IT!!!

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Devildoc.6721

Devildoc.6721

So yeah, I’ll train, and I’ll try to avoid people, but if you happen to be on the mob’s path running back and I didn’t see you.. well… not my problem, you can run it off too.

Pretty much agree with this. I’ve never had problems when people trained creatures onto me, so I don’t worry too much about training them into other people when I can’t be bothered to fight. If someone does stop to fight, I’ll usually help them, but more just to save them some time than out of concern for their safety.

Of course, if someone is actually in trouble then I’ll certainly go out of my way to help them.

only time I’ve had trouble with people training mobs is when they take their train b-line it into me while I’m already in the middle of a fight. That can kill you. People really should avoid doing that.

But you know, if you avoid other players while training it’s gravy, and if you happen to see that your train aggroed on someone, help.

GW2 is Fun-Centric, not Reward-Centric

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Devildoc.6721

Devildoc.6721

WvW and events 1200 range?

in Thief

Posted by: Devildoc.6721

Devildoc.6721

thief shortbow

crits for 5k can hit 3 targets

ranger shortbow
crits for 1k 1 target

see the difference?

sure rangers shortbow shoot 2times faster but thief damage is way higher and hit more targets

your class is already overpowered
giving 1200 range to thief shortbow will make it more op

This is why I think shortbow should stay 900, it’s a skirmishing aoe weapon.

Pistol is supposed to be our ranged single target weapon.

Yet it’s at 900 units too.

While yes you’ll take a single target down with pistols faster than shortbow, most people see shortbow’s additional utility/mobility/combos to be worth the damage tradeoff. Pistols are neglected.

Putting pistols at 1200 range would equalize them (though I still think pistols need something, mainly head shot damage increase and body shot vuln duration increase)

People asking for shortbow to be 1200 range are being very unrealistic. You’re asking for AOE at a 1200 range. You will never get it.

Single target 1200 range is more reasonable.

Trahearne: Not as bad as you might think

in Personal Story

Posted by: Devildoc.6721

Devildoc.6721

It’s the “chosen one” “destined” crap that I really dislike about Trahearne.

I’d prefer a character with some more realistic motivations than “I was born specifically to do this”.

Shooting a big dragon to death with weapons devised by the Charr and then improved upon by Asura and Humans, I can roll with that. Everyone who had a reason to kill the dragon, which is… everyone, got their brightest minds together and decided on how to tackle the problem.

“How do we kill a big dragon while it’s flying? Our swords can’t reach there and even the biggest swords only make tiny wounds on a big dragon.” says the Norn.

“We’ll use a big gun, flying on an airship!” says the Charr.

“A big laser gun!” says the Asura.

“A big magical laser gun!” says the Human.

and so they get their best and their brightest working on big guns and mega lasers. They have all sorts of designs figured out, one that shoots flak meant to shred up their wings, guns that are especially effective against ghosts and undead, guns that suck in magic, poison it, and shoot it back out, you know, they get creative.

Then they test these guns on other dragons, like the Claw of Jormag, and the Shatterer, and Tequatl the Sunless.

Once they are satisfied with the results, they use them to weaponize airships, and then use them on the big elder dragon.

I like that, they looked at the problem, and came up with solutions.

MEANWHILE in the Wish Fulfillment race..

You have individuals just DESTINED to do these things, and they just happen to know a mystical hippie ritual to accomplish it.

I think now I’d have preferred Guild Wars 2 sans Sylvari. I used to think humans were the big Mary Sue race.. but they pale in comparison to the Sylvari.

Thing is, I wouldn’t even care about the whole “destined” part of the Sylvari racial makeup, if those who fall under that destined role, did so for a reason. You know, Trahearne is destined to help lead the fight against the elder dragons, because he has a bright and cunning mind, and the charisma to lead and direct troops in battle. That sort of thing.

Sylvari are supposed to be this new race that are inquisitive and curious about everything, but most of their lines tend to fall into the “inexplicable mystical wisdom” cliche instead.

No, Trahearne was destined to do this because he dreamed about it. It has nothing to do with his personal qualities, it was just some mystical dream garbage.

Devildoc.6721

I just want to point out, if you’re not level 80, just please, don’t contribute your opinion. Yes we all get it the leveling up process is fun, because you’re not doing the same thing over and over.

When you’re at 80 though, there’s nothing but repeatable content, and there’s a lot of grind for not a lot of reward.

If you like the cosmetics of a set, you have to convince 4 other people who DON’T like the cosmetics of the set to come through THE SAME EXPLORABLE DUNGEON OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

Currently unless all 5 people like the skin, they won’t want to do the dungeon more than once or twice. It’s not worth their time.

People under level 80 just have no comprehension of that apparently.

it’s a simple fact: “Fun” fades with repetition.

"Training" Mobs, What is it and STOP IT!!!

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Devildoc.6721

Devildoc.6721

You know the thing about training… after awhile, the combat mechanics get boring, no matter how good the developers try to make them.. when you kill thousands of trash mobs, it really starts feeling like you’re just going through the motions, and you can’t be bothered with killing every mob standing in your way from point a to point b, especially if you’re running to an event, or just plain mining orichalcum.

So you train. I dodge roll, scatter caltrops behind me and gain swiftness for doing so, and I pretty much don’t care.

Now I avoid other people when I’m doing it, and if I do happen to encounter another player and they hit the mob chasing me, I stop and help.

But otherwise.. why waste the time killing

Every.

Single.

Trash.

Mob.

On.

The.

Way.

From.

Point.

A.

To.

Point.

B?

Just imagine every period there is a mob from point a to point b and you’ll get an accurate representation of Orr.

I’m level 80, so the experience isn’t much of a reason (that said kill experience is the lowest amount of experience in the game.. experience is never a reason to kill anything in this game).. the 1-2% chance they drop something worthwhile?

So yeah, I’ll train, and I’ll try to avoid people, but if you happen to be on the mob’s path running back and I didn’t see you.. well… not my problem, you can run it off too.

"Full Magic Find"

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Devildoc.6721

Devildoc.6721

I’m not sure how this game works, but in other games it would work like this – Mob has % chance to drop: No item, White item, Blue, Green, Yellow, Exotic.

Lets use yellow as example; a given mob has say 1% chance to drop a yellow item. With 100% MF that mob now has a 2% chance to drop the item. With 150% MF the mob now has a 2.5% chance to drop a yellow item.

seems like the effect is more than that but I can’t back that with solid numbers. I just know that when I do events at 90% I get yellows frequently.

Devildoc.6721

I have a basic MF set right now and run at around 70% with omnom bar active (although with the freaking TP down all the time I’ve now run out and can’t restock), but the above post is something I’ve really been wondering about. I definitely see a larger number of mob drops now that I geared up for MF, but I’m wondering if the fact that I’m basically missing something like 1/2 of my potential damage/survivability stats is really COSTING me somehow.

I wish I was mathematician enough to do some real comparisons.

Anybody know if there is some kind of sweet spot, or soft cap for true utility in MF?

I use the runes, and the food. I have 5 runes of the traveler, and 1 rune of the pirate (actually 2, since it’s on my helmet so I have it on my aquabreather too.. supposedly this gives a 2/6 bonus but I don’t know, because when I’m under water I’m not really wearing my helmet and when I’m on land I’m not really wearing my aquabreather).

That’s +60%

Omnomberry bar is 30%

So I run with 90%. Then there’s guild banners and boosts I get from the chests if I get lucky enough to have a key. So I could get 150%

What am I missing from using those runes?

Not that much, really.

I don’t really like most of the rune sets, I suppose the best I could do is use unadorned orbs.

But let’s put it this way.. my guildies don’t use MF, I do. They complain they get nothing but blues from events.. I almost always walk out with a yellow.

Here’s a philosophy they will never conquer or beat:

EVERYTHING loses its fun when repeated over a dozen times. I think only sex remains fun after a few dozen times in a row that it requires to get dungeon sets. I think even hardcore drugs stop being fun by then and more about pure unadulterated addiction.

Challenging dungeons with friends is fun one… two.. maybe 3 times.. but after you know how to beat it like the back of your hand.. it’s farming, it’s not fun.

Gold needs to go up, at least give a good reward for a “daily explorable dungeon”

If it wasn’t for Lord Faren being apparently immortal, I don’t think I would have been able to complete it.

Logan was on the ground dead.

I’d just ressed… again after being imploded by a dozen mobs at once… again..

and I was just watching as apparently, the mobs were all fighting Lord Faren

then suddenly a cutscene and I’d won.

supposedly Jeffrey said something about this quest being downtuned.. was it just through making the NPC’s soloing it? (if so that seems like a bad fix)

is it possible maybe to be able to continue a personal story instance from a checkpoint (like if we die) if we get disconnected while playing? This happens from time to time for me and it’s frustrating when it means starting over a 15-20 minute instance. I know there is some way of detecting that the client has gone linkdead, as I come back dead but have no repair cost when I reconnect.

Before other people give the “suggestion” of “get better internet” yeah, that’d be great but it’s not an option right now.

Trahearne: Not as bad as you might think

in Personal Story

Posted by: Devildoc.6721

Devildoc.6721

He doesn’t steal your personal story, but you didn’t read my post so you wouldn’t know.

He doesn’t steal it – only because the personal story in any meaningful form simply vanishes after Claw Island whether he’s there or not.

Trahearne is merely the coup de grâce in a personal storyline where post-Claw Island, choice is immaterial because everyone gets dumped into zombieville where the penultimate boss dies in a 5-man instance thanks to aerial gunnery in about as much time as it takes to make a cup noodle. Nuking Zhaitan with a Searing Cauldron somehow didn’t get written into the operations order.

Rationalization of Trahearrne’s injection into the personal storyline as “chief secretary” is infeasible; a military organization would collapse immediately with such a command structure, even if Efut, Fairhaired, Velazquez do become wallpaper. Your OP apparently rests on “Trahearne is shy and needs you, so you are really the hero.” The irony of your inability to understand the opposing view is in dependency on the same singular point: Trahearne is a weak and deeply flawed character. For a good number of us, this is an absolute dealbreaker. For you, evidently it is not. I congratulate your ability to enjoy the personal storyline in spite of its flaws.

Actually he’s not a flawed character, that’s the problem. The flaw is he has no real flaws.

I’d advise doing 1 craft at a time but then hoarding all the mats you get if you want to do all the crafts, which might be what’s necessary if you want multiple legendary weapons and if you want the achievement.

At least, 1 craft at a time that uses the same mats. Doing cooking, jewellry, and tailor all at the same time is fine, they don’t use any of the same mats. However doing Weaponsmith, Huntsman, and Armorer will find you in a pinch as they share most of the same mats, in particular the fine dropped mats.

Only do 1 of those that requires like claws and blood at a time, at least only 1 on your current tier.
