New trait system Good or bad?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I’m sorry to ask this stupid noob question. But, I am not really very smart on the whole trait and build system. I experiment.

But, it looks like, to me, that one of the complaints about the new trait system is that you can’t just pick the one trait you want from the line and move on to other traits you want because those other traits might be in a different line and you’re stuck with a whole trait line for the benefit of one particular trait you wanted.

But, are you taking into account that the skills in the trait line you didn’t want still do add some usefulness to your character?

Like on my Mesmer, there was a skill that allowed you to dodge and leave a clone behind you. I never picked that trait because I didn’t see it as useful as another trait I wanted.

But with this new trait system, I have the benefit of that trait as well as the ones I also wanted. So, now, 3x out of 5x when I dodge, I’m leaving that clone behind me and it’s very helpful to me when I’m trying to flee through places and drop mobs, whatnot. It’s great way to grab a quick clone to shatter to activate might or fury buffs on the fly … if the situation arises.

It seemed to me that so many players get on such a rigid platform for their builds and they don’t consider the minute benefits of other traits that weren’t worth traiting with before. I know you have all experimented, invested heavily in time, effort and gold to come up with the best build for your class/profession and are unhappy if you no longer have the flexibility to recreate that build now with the new trait system. That is a BIG down side to making such a large change in the game and the devs should have had that in mind when they did this.

I understand that players have the most successful builds that work best for them and their play style. That is a personal thing. Is it that some of you are just reluctant to change or is your build really diminished now because of the inflexibility of not being able to pick and chose only the traits you want?

My feeling right now is that I am happy with the new trait line because, one, it’s kind of simpler for me. I’m not as up on all the mechanics of builds as most of you are. So, it’s a simplified system for someone like me. And I am getting very good information in this thread that is helping me understand how to build my character better.

That’s why I say, sorry for this , stupid noob question about whether you are discounting the benefits of the traits you never wanted before now that you have some of them.

I think there is a lot of “microanalysis” of the story line, especially at Claw Island that really isn’t beneficial to experiencing the overall theme. This whole battle chapter of Claw Island was supposed to be immensely huge, although constraints in computer programing maybe, the content is quite downscaled.

But, you aren’t supposed to be able to swim around and see (or to know) that your beloved mentor dropped at the gate unceremoniously. You’re only supposed to know that the battle is lost (and you’ve got comrades limping on both your arms depending on you (in your heroism) to get them to safety while they honor the stall tactic, even if it’s only for the benefit of 5 minutes by your mentor while you’re all limping and fighting to the ship. Your escape is supposed to be within a hair’s breadth of all your lives and would not have been successful had not your mentor shut the gate behind him/her and faced the enemy while you saved lives and got back to LA to direct the next course of action in the defense of LA and the thousands of innocent lives there. At least that’s what I took away from that chapter.

And the writers of the story placed that element in it for an emotional charge. It’s what I pay for when I pay for entertainment like this. Good story, emotional components, enthralling, engaging me to go on and eventually when completing it, wanting more and feeling sad the whole personal story adventure is over and loving the new adventure to begin.

I want more personal stories. I want more personal adventures. It’s why I pay for this game. I like the stories.

And yes, I wish we could see our mentors again. I can think of all kinds of scenarios to do that, but the creative content belongs to the owners of this game and I’m just along for the ride. I don’t know if they are taking player suggestions into account.

It would be neat if they held a “creative content” contest like thing where we can submit our “fantasy stories” on a limited subject, such as the fallen mentor, for example. They could allow us to have some input in the actual creative aspect of the stories in the game that way if they wanted to. If they didn’t want to, well, that’s all right too. I appreciate their creative license. It’s another reason I pay for this game, for the fantasy content.

Silverwastes shovels ?

Well, I didn’t know it was superstition. I have been getting better rewards since I increased my account luck.

But my account luck is nowhere near as high as yours is.

But today, I actually have not gotten any shovels and someone else started a thread about the same thing. So, when more than one player is noticing something, I’d think there’s something behind it.

That being said, I have noticed the mobs are a lot harder to kill in all the maps now. Seems I’m getting knocked on my backside left and right by all the mobs now in all the maps from lowest to highest levels.

So, they are definitely tweaking things here and there. I wouldn’t put it past them to nerf drops anywhere — if that’s what’s happening with shovels. Maybe it’s not.. I’m not saying it is.

Silverwastes shovels ?

Electra.7530

Hi guys

for the past week or so I have been unable to get anymore shovels. I do events in silverwastes, sometimes start at 3/4 or 4/4 sometimes all the way from zero and complete the maps. Not getting any shovels for event completion rewards as I used to.

Also, don’t see any shovels available at the vendors, either at Camp Resolve, or individual fort vendors once the forts are open.

So how do I get shovels now ?

Are you using up all your luck items? I used to stock pile luck items in my bank. I don’t know why. I didn’t understand what they were. I had a huge amount of them stock piled up in my bank. Then I looked at my magic find percentage on my account and it was like 24%.

So, I had the same problem. Never getting anything good. Never getting emp fragments and I was building ascended gear. I built my whole set of ascended gear and 2 ascended weapons on like 24% magic find on my account.

Then someone told me I am supposed to use the magic find items you get when you salvage gear. And I used my whole stock pile of those magic find items and now my account is +97% magic find and I get shovels coming out of my ears. I have them sitting in my bag right now. I usually get 2-6 shovels per evening in silver wastes map.

I don’t know what your magic find percentage is on your account, but I noticed a HUGE difference in rewards and ascended mats I am now getting from before when my account was only 24% magic find.

Rune option armor,more&better builds[sggstn]

There is currently an upgrade extractor in the BLTC that will extract upgrades without destroying the item. It’s under the “Special” tab for 250 gems each.

I would so buy that item if it were a permanent item. I would pay as much for it as I would pay for the permanent resource items.

But, alas, it’s a one-time-only tool, if I understand correctly, and is removed once it has removed your rune. 250 gems adds up way too much to really use the tool effectively with gear and builds.

Just IMHO.

I’ve dealt with some pretty severe racism many, many times. And I’ve said in the past that despite Gw2 having “one of the nicest MMO communities” I’ve also never experienced more racism any where in my life than in this game. I’m not sure what causes it but there are some extremely insensitive people out there. Not to mention that it doesn’t even bother me most of the time… I could care less if people want to use racial slang or stereotypes but some of the things I’ve heard in Gw2 really make me wonder if these people actually think that way or if they’re just being rude.

What ever the case, I’ve reported the people that have said these things, including the [NGGR] guild on multiple occasions and to my knowledge nothing has been done. Though of course it’s possible I’m just misinformed. Regardless, if they haven’t been banned, it would upset me more knowing that they’re still out there potentially hurting someone else than knowing of the things they said to me specifically.

I think people today are carried too far away with “offensive” ideas. The NGGR guild, for instance, if it’s offensive to you, sorry. But, why should they have to change their guild name because you are offended because it looks too much like a racial slur? People need to stop getting offended over every little thing. And to me, that guild name is trivial and unworthy of a second look let alone being offensive.

It would be different if the members are spewing explicit racial slurs all over the maps and being generally obnoxious about it. Maybe that is the case and you’ve seen that and are offended. Then I could understand.

I have never seen any abuse directed at me or at anyone in the area around me in this game all the while I’ve been playing. This whole gaming community is 10 flights of steps up from the f2p games I’ve played in the past. Mature, intelligent individuals that play this game for entertainment and act cordial to everyone is all I’ve ever seen.

Of all the mmo games I’ve played, the complexity of class builds and professions is highest in this game. I like this game better than all the other games I’ve played too.

I chose the greatsword reward on my guardian and the sword reward on another character I’m leveling. I also want to get the mace, focus and possibly the scepter. And the trident is nice too.

As it stands now, no matter what, those level 30 weapons I receive as a reward that I’m allowed to choose do not have the skin unlocked in my wardrobe when I either right click on it or equip it.

I can only imagine it is so we won’t all be farming them. I will have to spend gold to get them. I usually use greatsword, but I like the sword and shield for my swap.

I have to agree with you about Webzen, Immortal. I have played a Webzen game for a couple years and sunk a lot of money into it and all the money Webzen took went into developing C9 and then they canceled the older game I was playing.

And their customer service was horrible. They held events that would give prizes to winning players and guilds and then never awarded the prizes and ignored all the inquiries. They held cash events (example: buy a certain amount of a cash shop item and receive a free flying mount.) They never awarded the flying mounts to the accounts of players that made the purchases and ignored 8 inquiries from me about that. When I went to their forum and complained about it, they admonished me in the forum to send direct inquiry, but I sent 8 inquiries and they ignored all of them and deleted my posts in forum about it.

But the biggest thing they ever did that was so HORRIBLE, they offered an elite set of gear for sale at some astronomical price and if you purchased it, you were given the 2nd tier elite weapon with a specific set of stats that WERE NOT available in game as an incentive to buy.

Then after we purchased the set and got our 2nd tier elite weapon with skills and stats that WERE NOT available in game, they nerf’d that stats, in particular, they nerf’d the -3 second debuff duration stat, which was the only reason players even made the purchase to begin with, to -1 second.

I could go on how terrible Webzen was. I think to the point of almost criminally dishonest. I have played a lot of “free games” so-called, but I have never seen any more corrupt, dishonest, deceitful, lying organization such as Webzen.

Caveat Emptor, buyer beware. If Webzen still exists, BE VERY CAREFUL. They have been dishonest and downright abusive to their players.

I have so few weapons in my wardrobe as it is, about 9 in total and I have checked every name. I have the greatsword now, but I do not have the sword (level 30 reward from story) in wardrobe.

Priory weapons are so awesome looking.

“What most players expect is an environment of fun, relaxation, with a bit of challenge, but not too much but not to mindnumbing either. A nice balance one might say.”

This quote describes me perfectly. I play this game for my own amusement and entertainment. I have turned away from the television to the internet.

The only thing about this game that I don’t like are a couple of the real hard core challenging aspects of maps and jumping puzzles. That reflects on me more than the designers of this game.

The new maps for instance, are a pain in the kitten to run. I don’t mind challenge, but I don’t like spending enormous amounts of time in challenges. I want to progress efficiently, not at great cost of time and effort.

Jumping puzzles are a huge source of frustration for me. I can’t tell you how many jumping puzzles I’ve never finished because I don’t want to spend all my valuable time in game trying to get to the end of the jumping puzzles. And if I get half way through it and fail and have to start all over again, that’s a deal breaker with me.

I’m not the kind of player that demands huge challenge, but I appreciate that it is there available to all. If I choose to partake of the challenge, it’s there for me and I appreciate that.

The new maps now, I’ve not discovered everything. The harder the maps get, the less time I will spend in them. If something is to be challenging means it has to be extraordinarily time consuming and fraught with frustration, I don’t do it. I play for fun, not to be frustrated endlessly.

That reflects on me, the player, not the game. I have no criticism of the game, just saying how shallow I can be about it.

The level 80 greatsword I purchased from the npc at the priory is in my wardrobe now and I used a transmute stone to apply it to my current weapon.

However, the level 30 sword (not the greatsword) item from the rewards of the story is not in the wardrobe. It too is greyed over as if it had been unlocked, but is nowhere to be found in my wardrobe. The only thing I can think of is that it is not available unless you purchase the level 80 version of it.

That will be expensive, but I guess it keeps us from farming those really, really cool looking priory weapon skins.

Thank you everybody.

It’s very possible I’m not understanding how this works. I wasn’t level 80. So, that didn’t work. But, I thought I was just going to salvage it, so silly me bought it on a level 35 character that was instantly soulbound to. So, it will wait in my bank until I get to level 80.

I will try to right click on it. I know I have to use a transmute stone to use the skin once I select it in my wardrobe, my problem is getting it to my wardrobe. And I wasn’t able to use the skin from the priory greatsword that was level 30 that I selected as a reward from my story. So, I thought maybe they did that intentionally so we would have to buy it from the npc at the priory.

Thank you all for your help. I hope it’s just me bungling and not getting it right and when my character reaches level 80, it will unlock for me.

I’m still noob. I bought the priory greatsword, paid my 5g 52s and copper chump change for it. But, I only wanted the skin. I can’t destroy it or unlock the skin. And it’s soulbound immediately.

All I wanted was the skin and I wanted it badly enough to pay over 5g. I’m actually pretty mixed up about skins. I want them for all my characters that use greatswords.

You would think after playing this game for over a year, things like that would be second nature to me. But, sadly, I have only recently started collecting skins for armor and weapons in the last few weeks.

Equipping the level 30 priory greatsword I got from the story did not unlock the skin for my wardrobe. And it wouldn’t let me salvage that weapon. So, I paid gold and bought the level 80 version and I still don’t have my priory greatsword skin in my wardrobe.

Electra.7530

Thank you. I am a little unclear on some of those skills. My Mesmer has all skills and all specializations unlocked.

I sort of use the rally skill to get people up fast, though I’m not too sure how it works. Then for elite skill I use the time warp.

I can add portals in dungeons, but I sort of rely on the phantasmal defender to help me avoid agro sometimes. I was wondering if I could open a portal on top of a downed player that is under attack if I can’t aid and allow them to portal to safety even though they’re down. I will try to experiment a little bit with that.

But, I have noticed some strange things going on since the update as a result of the specialization traits. I love dodging and leaving a clone behind. But it was never good enough for me to dedicate one of my skill slots for it.

So, good call GW on the specialization skills.

Mantras bewilder me. I don’t understand mantras. But, that’s beside the point.

Thank you.

I have a question about buffs/gear stats

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Electra.7530

Electra.7530

I apologize for these naïve/stupid questions. But I don’t know the answer.

1. I’m a Mesmer and I love to play in Silverwastes. So, I shatter my clones often for other players to get fury buff. But, which buff is more beneficial to other players? Fury or might? I don’t like to shatter my illusions (because I get some hp regen when they’re out) and I only do it if there is benefit to others.

And other classes have skills that give the same sort of buffs, might, precision, toughness. I wonder, do they all stack if I give my fury buff and a warrior uses one of his banners with might and fury?

2. Which is better for damage in pve? Precision or might? I love to make gear, so I have four or five different sets of gear for her. In silver wastes, I use ascended assassin stats for high precision. But, I can use the Bezerker stats for more might if that is better for me and allies near me to quickly dispatch mobs.

3. And for dungeons? I’m scared to join parties because I’m ignorant of how to do the dungeons. But, if I do go, should I go on tank/condition build? low dmg, high tanking? Should I use high precision/might (glass cannon) build for dungeon?

I can do any of those options because I’ve made so many different varieties of armor for her.

And I am still quite overwhelmed with the vastness of this game and there is so much to know. I know a good bit, but not a whole lot.

As for fractals, I don’t even do them. I know I should. I don’t do dungeons. I know I should, but I play alone and I"m not familiar with how to do dungeons and fractals and I don’t want to burden parties because I’m ignorant of what to do.

I can’t speak for Everquest. But, most players, like most populations, don’t consider the costs of subsidizing goods and services.

This would not be an issue if those who are being forced to subsidize others were given value for their money.

The veteran character slot is an example of providing value to the veteran. But, I think it is a very small value. I’d like to see some more value. Anet and I disagree on the value of the veteran character slot. I’d like to see some gems included in the deal for the veteran player purchasing the standard edition.

In short, I want to see more value for my subsidizing new players.

This is also true of me. I’m a solo player and I enjoy all aspects of the game, lore and being properly oriented to the tasks at hand.

I understand OP completely and he/she has made a sensible suggestion.

I have a suggestion for the OP. It’s possible to go to youtube and just watch some of the dungeons. Sometimes they players that make the vids will have the cut scenes play out. It’s possible to be able to watch those scenes on your own time without the pressure of a fast-paced party on the move.

But the problem is, while they say they are “committed” to their players, they are too committed to giving new players a great deal and not giving their veteran players a break. Their policy of keeping the core game and its current updates/expansions bundled with any and all new future expansions has to be paid for and that keeps the price of their expansions too high.

Veteran players need better value for their continued support since they get the least bang for their exceptionally high buck.

This scheme forces all existing veteran players to subsidize the new players that may come along. Maybe we wouldn’t mind that so much if we felt we were getting the best value for our money.

I haven’t said anything about this before. At first I raised my eyebrow about bundling the core game into this expansion. But, as time has been going by, it’s becoming more and more troublesome for me. I should not have had to pay so much for the ultimate expansion. I should not have had to pay for the core game to be included in it.

I think that veteran players should receive gems from anet to compensate us for the unnecessarily high cost of the expansion.

New players are getting both the game and the expansion for the price of the expansion. I remember paying $60 for the game when it was first released. Why do I have the cost of the core game bundled into the expansion?

It’s so unfair and I’m so disappointed about this. They seriously take their veteran players for granted.

That said, I thought it was just me with no dps. I couldn’t dps down mobs in Frostgate Forge to save my life — but I did save my life because I was so tanky. It seemed like such an incredible tanky character. I liked that.

I liked using the axe/mace weapons the most. Those spinning hammers were pretty fun. I did put on a full Bezerker set and I didn’t seem to notice much improvement with damage.

Maybe this class is meant to be a tank in group pvp. It had some nice aoe cures. Every dungeon group or pvp group should have a rev with them.

Dungeon sellers, taxis, etc, all seems kind of seedy to me. That’s just my opinion. You all can carry on doing things you are allowed to do. I’ve played enough games to know to be very, very careful in dealing with money and other players. I stay away from the whole subject period.

Alert: In-Game Mail Scams

This looks like an old thread, but I have only recently, within last 4 days received 2 of these e-mails warning my account will be shut down. I screen shot it and showed it to support through an e-mail and I hope that player account that was used to scam me into going to a site to authenticate/verify my account was banned.

But, a long time ago, many, many months ago, I received an ingame mail with some miniatures attached. It was some kind of thank your from Arena net for purchasing gems or something. It was a very old message and I was deleting old messages. But, before I deleted it, I noticed it said at the bottom it was from another player and not the Guild Wars 2 team.

I accepted the items in the message many months ago when it was originally sent. I don’t remember seeing that message at the bottom many months ago. But now I wonder about it.

To report another player for an phishing attempt e-mail is not specified in the reasons to report. Is scamming the correct reason to report the player that sent the e-mail? I don’t like to report players. But, I don’t want them to be able to come in game and keep sending dangerous in game messages to players.

Edited to add: I noticed I received my first in game message about my account soon to be shut down right after I posted my first message on forum. Whoever is doing this is just combing the forum and mailing everybody once they see our account name in the forum. I’ve had another one now, I guess I will keep receiving these kinds of messages and I’ll keep reporting them as scammers.

I tried the Revenant and I will definitely make one when they are complete. It’s another melee class and I like it very much. I like the hammer and the axe weapon combo for it the best.

It has interesting skills.

Hero Points & old characters: breach of trust

I had all my skills/traits unlocked on my Mesmer and they were still unlocked and hero points sitting in reserve after the last patch.

And also, as I have been leveling up alts, certain levels unlock hero points in bulk. I noticed in rewards for a certain level that I earned 17 hero points as one of the rewards of that level.

I hear what you say when you want to unlock certain things and not others and you don’t want to have to spend all the hero points to do it, but they give us an abundance of hero points to unlock with over and above the hero points you earn on each map.

At least for me, this is not an issue, hasn’t been an issue. I haven’t noticed that my character has lost anything.

Its time to give us info about HoT

I would like a release date. I think with pre-order sales, the very least they should do is provide a release date.

I did the final chapter of personal story and it was challenging and took me a little bit of time. But, I learned the dungeon and can run it now confidently with parties if I can find parties that aren’t selling or story mode now.

I want those runes of Orr for my necromancer.

I really am put off by the selling, 5g, 6g when I just want to farm it for relics. That’s the price you pay I guess if you play alone and don’t have a bunch of friends running them with you.

To the guy that started this thread, I’m kind of sorry to see what he had to say about personal story. I made myself sit through all the credits at the end and it seems this was a massive undertaking and hundreds of names scrolling by and lots of time and talent put into the project. I really liked the personal story, I’m doing it on other classes and have started the Living Story 2.

Oh, thank you very much. But, I still seem to have to enter the instance because that’s where the marker is. I guess I haven’t figured everything out yet. The marker is sitting right on top of the dungeon doors for ruined city of arah. It says I have to speak to Caithe in ruined city of arah.

But, thank you.

I’m very noob. I only just log’d into forum here. But, I have not completed my personal story. I have to kill Zhaitan, but I don’t know how. If it’s in a dungeon, I’m not good about dungeons. I play alone. I’ve looked at groups and I see something about wanting gold or pay-for-runs and that kind of turns me off.

I would like to be able to finish my personal story.

But to stay on topic with this thread, for what it’s worth, I really liked my personal story and I’m doing multiple personal stories on alts and having fun. But, that’s kind of because I play alone.
