Various other classes for figuring out how to kill em (thief, warrior, mesmer, etc…)
War is much more fun when you’re winning! – General Martok
Except that it FORCES an immediate reflex test between players. Unfortunately, the reflex test is also countered by external variables… lag, rendering time, loading time, culling, whatever you want to call it. So the reflex test is HEAVILY in favor of the thief.
THAT is why the thief’s ability to invis is OP at the moment; because it reduces the number of people that have fast enough reflexes to react to an initial burst from a thief to a lower portion of the general populace…. all from a simple mechanic (or worse a single button push).
It is near 8 est but if there is cycle in progress (where it counts down the WvW timer before recalculating scores) it waits for that timer to conclude and then begins the reset.
I think there should be a vote kick option which puts whoever is vote kicked out of the battleground for a period of time (24 hours or something). This would also help reduce eggheads who ramble in chat about meaningless stupidity.
What is there to nerf? The only real trick to your set up is the churning earth tp which has been around for quite a while. I do have to agree with Mathiuzz in that you are still relatively squishy. Also, your combo order could use some work as you are not taking advantage of the state of your opponent in some cases.
+10% for being attuned to fire
+5% if you’re burning (there are traits you can pick to cause burning)
If you just switched to Fire you prolly have a might on your with a 2nd stack for using a fire spell.
Increased power from fire (at 30)
Like +30% crit damage from air (at 30)
+20% damage to foes with < 25% health
60% chance to cause vulnerability on critical hits (each one increases damage done to target by 1%)
+20% damage to knocked down and stunned foes
Deal extra damage while your health is > 90% (from 10 pts in Water) – not sure on amount
With certain circumstances… I could see those damage numbers. However, with the above build, the elementalist would have about 12k hp and very little toughness/defense. So, quite literally, he would snap like a twig under any resistance.
Also, its easy to counter, find the robed guy/gal with his arm in the air standing perfectly still for what feels like an eternity… then plink him with a mosquito bite and watch him die…
There are builds where you can do a good amount of damage with one or two abilities but they require you to strip everything down to have massive amounts of power, crit chance and crit damage. There are some traits that will help (anything that does more damage). But most likely it was all stats.
dont stand under big balls of fire from the sky? Its not like you couldnt see it coming…
Invis is very short term and long CD. Yes, he should be able to escape. He’s a Thief. He probably had several invis moves on his bars so his damage and utility were hampered in order to have lots of escape. He was probably kittening that yall kept catching him. You would think with a stealth you could get away.
Prolly why many think that Thief is OP. Not only are they near impossible to kill but they do outrageous damage (independent of their damage ability as opposed to other classes that have to sacrifice damage potential in order to gain survival ability).
I know many players that are moving to greener pastures (other games, not GW2) because of the massive imbalance. Nothing more exciting then dying near instantly to a player that you can’t see and does more damage than you could only imagine doing. It is one of the reasons my friends and I have stopped playing as much as we use to.
Some sort of Elite WvW class. Meant for players who already have 1 or more lvl 80’s. But basically, they have more group-oriented or supplemation abilities. I actually thought the Commander book would allow this sort of stuff, but not so much.
Specials could be siege equipment bonuses or AoE boons. Etc… Like I said, I really thought the commander book would utilize such things.
Anyway, as for a solo class… It is hard to come up with one… when you think about it, GW2 has already covered most of the bases. If you were to come up with a new class, it would likely just be a hybrid of existing classes. So, one example would be like a ninja who is a Thief + Engineer. Another would be a Warlock which is Warrior + Elementalist. Etc…
Actually, I’m not so sure we will. For example, if DH wins and SoR takes 2nd, we’ll prolly be rematched again (though colors may actually change for once).
I’ll try to recap what I posted in the deleted thread. A lil erked that ANet deleted the entire thread instead of making modifications since it was already responded to…
Anyway, as for my guild and I, our participation in WvW has dropped massively since the reset. During our previous match, we were on each nite and there were queues for every zone. Now, we have committed maybe 1 or 2 nites and that is only because of alliance operations. There never seems to be a queue except for EB. Which leads me to believe that other guilds are potentially going through the same rutt.
Could be burnout, but i dunno. So maybe it is the fact that this feels like a rematch? SF already won the last match after putting in a lot of effort. Not feeling it this time. It is nothing against DH or SoR. In fact, it is fun fighting these 2 servers… but imagine the feeling of playing a game for a week only to accidently delete the saved game file you were using and finding that you have to start back where you were a week ago. Kinda feels like that, imo.
In most traditional MMO games, teh mage (in this case, the elementalist) is the only class that can truly invis. Actually, it is any pure caster (so necro, mesmer and elementalist in our case).
Meanwhile classes that pseudo-invis could be heavily countered. After all, they are actually “hidden” not “invis”.
So, why don’t elems get an invis ability? It would play perfectly in our air line. No need to give us a dmg boost on hitting while invis as that would seriously impede on the thief’s abilities.
But that leads to another point, in most MMO’s the counters to invis would be things like “See Invis” or “Sense Player” or something similar. Why are these abilities omitted?
Anyway, was something I just thought about and wanted to discuss. No flames, just an actual discussion.
You do nothing during a siege? Then you are still messing up. Here’s what a thief prolly should be doing…
If you are defending, pop out and do a big aoe damage thing (you’ll probably down 2 or 3 guys before you have to go back in)… dagger storm comes to mind. Otherwise, stay on a wall away from where the fight is and pick off their reinforcements (they will come). Thief has obscene amounts of damage and escapability… so your risk is ridiculously low. Jump in, take out a guy. Then wait for his friends to come rez him and kill them too.
If you are on offense, wait in a place near the portal and pick off the guys that get yanked off the wall. Your high DPS and ability to get out of most situations will be an asset. If you get in trouble, run into your zerg, u will be fine.
Seriously, you have absolutely NOTHING to complain about.
Our o snap buttons are mediocre really. RTL in a random direction is prolly the best… Mist form doesn’t last long enough and too many classes have closers that will kill you when u reappear. You won’t get out of range in mist form. All a thief has to do is invis to go full speed and they’ve got you.
Teleport (blink, whatever) is very limited range. And I’m not sure if the people attacking you loses their target. It would be useful if they did but I doubt it.
All other abilities are short ranged and you are STILL in combat moving slow as slug snot.
boobzooka.3521 – u r doing it wrong. I’ve seen thieves take on 3 people at a time, solo, and just wreck them.
It is a pretty sad state of affairs when someone says “I can take 1v1 easy and 1v2 most of the time” and then finds room to complain!?!?
Seriously, I would love to be able to say I can take 1v1 easy. I think MOST elementalists would say that. Sure, I can take on most 1v1, but its a life and death struggle EVERY time. But a 1v2 and I’m pretty much guaranteed a loss.
This is all WvW btw, not sPvP. 2 different animals completely.
Don’t play an Ele. I’m a lvl 80 ele and I started playing a thief. While the gameplay is ridiculously simpler, it is far, far easier. I find it more fun to play the Ele, but the amount of effort to play the ele does not equate to better results. It is just that every class is easy mode in comparison.
I got killed by the half naked norn once (well finishing shot). I remember it vividly cuz I was like… dude was that guy half naked?
I really want them to give a grace period. Let me die (that’s fine) and also when I do reconnect put me back at the spawn point for my world in that zone. That way it cannot be exploited.
But having to wait to get back in just plain sux.
I think the GW2 crashes are related to sound or something. I would be curious if everyone here is using Vent or something. Seems like it happens most frequently when I have a lot of chatter in Vent and lots of stuff on screen (like a major siege).
The other thought is a memory issue of some sort as the memory usage seems to be the same every time I crash or lockup. I am on Win7 32 bit.
For those unable to log in, here’s an update on the DH/SF/SoR battle:

CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE who has participated in that matchup
regardless of the score, you are all winners

Mega Tip #32: Instead of salvaging everything, sometimes it is better to sell things. This will help pay the bills.
The idea of the what use to be… you know, the days of nostalgia… seem all golden and pretty. We can look back fondly on those days. But I assure you, if you played a game like that now, you would be absolutely furious and would uninstall it and demand your money back. Heck, even EQ1 removed corpse runs. You still have xp loss, but leveling is RIDICULOUSLY easy. I think I got lvl 70 in a week of play a few weeks ago.
It sucked having to spend a week… just to get from level 30 to level 31. And that was if you didn’t die too much.
If you want to be punished, go play EvE. Tons of work, tons of time doing mindless repetitive tasks, very little skill involved (until you do PvP), and an absurd amount of risk. Jump into a .4 system, ur dead. Liked that 100 million isk ship u were flying? Its gone too. Doesn’t that feel good?!?
Seriously, you guys need to examine ur S&M fetishes. Games are meant to be fun.
SF: 183,080
DH: 176,911
SoR: 168,322Can’t really post the winner yet…….
Nice.
wow I wish i was on one of those servers that must have been one hell of a fun week for all involved.
This is what I hope to get every week
It has been the most enjoyable week of WvW so far. Several 3-way skirmishes (more than I can count actually). At one point, we defended DH off Dreaming Bay on the northeast wall and as they were retreating, we had to sprint to the south wall to fight off SoR. Literally moments apart and all the while without reinforcements (SoR took GB cutting off our supply).
Ya, it was a blast.
ps, I think we got a serious rivalry starting…
I’d like to see some titles based on #of kills, etc (many more than exists for the achievements), but giving boosts to players who play all the time creates a huge have/have not atmosphere and removes the even playing field.
I have over 5000 kills on WvW and have no desire for something like that to make me “improved” over the guy who first steps into the battleground.
I dont believe time should = better gear/skills at all. You should be a better player because you practice more, not because you’re given free boosts.

Thanks Sir William. Been itching to know the score. You guys are continuing to edge up on us. Been a fantastically fun few days. Can’t wait to see how it ends.
Except that WvW does end. Not sure how your argument works here. Once the match is over, one of the 3 sides is the winner. The other 2 are the losers. So your goal is to be the winner. Just like a board game.
So does the color green win is game? Last week, FA was green and we were dominating and all of these screens show green as the dominant world.
That is an odd coincidence. Last I checked, we were winning and we’re green. I’ll try to post the score later tonite.

Let’s put it this way…
When I see an elementalist in WvW and I down them, I feel guilty. I know what they are probably thinking and further, there’s nothing they can do now that they are on the ground. In the back of my mind I have that nagging feeling that the table could have been reverse and it could be me laying there. I know what they feel when they enter a WvW area only to be targeted by everyone immediately because they will die fast and its a quick kill number on the board… and heck, not like you’re gonna get stopped while trying to kill them. I feel bad knowing that I just have to endure a few stuns or blinds and then they die instantly. I feel bad seeing a staff elementalist alone in a field.
This doesn’t happen some of the time or part of the time, it happens EVERY time I down an ele… which happens a lot cuz I’m pretty good at killing em. When I kill a warrior? Nothing but smoldering vengeance. A thief, the quicker they die the better. In fact, I’d like to revive them just to kill them a second time. They deserve it because they purchased GW2 Easy Mode. (alt is a thief)
Until that nagging feeling goes away, the elementalist is not balanced. I want to be able to fight an ele and think to myself “that was a good fight” or something similar. Heck, I’d love it if the thieves or the warriors or the mesmers or any other class for that matter, gave the elementalist a shread of respect.
Hate to keep comparing to Thieves…. but the thief gets 2 amazing elites (as well as amazing downed abilities, amazing survival abilities, and highest burst dps in the game, nah… they’re not overpowered at all).
The first one is the one that spawns two thieves to fight alongside. The second one is that twirly crap that they do (dagger storm).
Now, in my mind a tornado is rather twirly. So they should be rather similar?
But here’s the rub… just compare the two…
Damage, dagger storm does 2x the damage – FURTHER, dagger storm does 5s of bleed which makes it far superior in damage
Duration, Tornado lasts 2x as long
Range, dagger storm is 3x the range (240 to 900)
Stability, both get it
Recast, dagger storm is 90s, tornado is 180
Oh… and while you can’t knock down, stun, etc… either one (because of stability), that makes your number 1 defense to run away. Well, that’s great for people facing tornado because you can run at full speed (assuming u r not knocked down which doesn’t seem to happen very often in WvW)… but the dagger storm, you’re crippled making you move slower making it easier to die to.
Easy fix to Tornado? Grant ele invulnerable. shrug

I just spent about 30 minutes monkeying with my traits. And then (since I have a baby thief) I monkeyed with theirs. And I gotta say, I feel incredibly shafted.
Just go through our trait list options… eh, eh, hmm not bad, eh, eh, eh, well guess that works…. but you go through a thief’s options and its like Wow, I can’t decide which one is best, they are all great.
That makes the class versatile. The attunement versatility is garbage. We have to spam 100 buttons to do enough damage to begin to match EVERYONE else’s damage that they do with 2-3.
So, if I had to pick 1 thing (and only 1), it would be the reward vs. effort approach. Give us more bang for our buck if we work for it (or make other classes work for more bang for their buck).
However, I agree with everything Vaerah said (especially #2). So… need more items, see that list.
Any server that is matched against a server that has beaten my server… but only for the current match.
I agree that RTL needs fixing (I’ve posted several times only to have elitists say “jump first”. I don’t want to jump first. I want the friggin spell to work.).
S/D and D/D are the better ones. I prefer S/D but I’m considering running D/D some soon to see if I can tweak it better for skills.
However, I think Dragon’s Tooth is good. It is one of our biggest hitters, it is on a really low cooldown, and on top of that it adds a huge burning effect (which some of our traits are geared towards) and is AOE. The draw back is that it can be evaded. If you are going to rely on its damage, you need to consider using signet of earth as a backup for Updraft.
Agree. The protection of the jumping puzzles is a viable tactic. As already stated, it gives badges of honor (used to purchase gear and siege equipment), siege blueprints, some gear, etc…. We are in a war. The point of war is not to die for your country, the point of war is to make the poor kitten on the other side of the field die for his country. Want bunnies? Stay in PvE.
Glad to hear a fix is coming, but in the meantime, do the GM’s or support staff have the ability to fix the broken keeps/garrisons? It is skewing the WvW numbers and making home borderlands very tough to fight on (per the aforementioned trebs inside garrison and such).
So, each item with commentary:
Fix invisible armies – AGREE absolutely. Highest priority in WvW as this is a huge issue (not knowing when to flee is the sux).
Remove AOE damage through gates – AGREE. However, because of this, AOE damage should be increased so that the AOE effect essentially “envelopes” teh gate. I should not be able to hit or be hit by toons on the other side of the gate with the exception of a very few set of skills. Those skills should be listed as “Can be shot through gates” in their skill description.
Alliances support & chat – DISAGREE. 3 way is meant to be 3 way. Do not change this. Alliances within the same World, I can agree on (ie, multiple guilds).
Show guild tag on claimed structures – AGREE.
Improve outmanned buff. atm it’s useless. – AGREE. This is the 2nd highest priority on this list. 50v10 sux. 100v10 sux. The buff does nothing. And the situation isn’t that we just aren’t trying, its that the opposing server just has more people on at that time period. However, there was mention of a Mercenary option on these forums that I would support even stronger.
Fix queues – AGREE
Siege weapons can damage friendly structures – DISAGREE – are you mad? Griefing and such… BAD.
Nerf mesmer. It’s ridiculous that you need a mesmer for everything. – NO COMMENT – I prefer to focus entirely on balance for all classes. Bring the underpowered classes up in power and reduce the overpowered (gently).
AOE Friendly Fire – DISAGREE – are you mad? Griefing and such… BAD.
The guild owing a tower or a keep can:<snip> – NO COMMENT – I haven’t given this much thought. I think I agree with it.
STRONGLY disagree with the OP regarding progression and buffs especially those that deal with combat buffs.
Playing should not make a player any stronger. PvP and WvW should be mostly skill and very little to do with play time and gear. Which is the way it is now.
There are gear progressions that players can do if they choose (the Invader’s gear found at weaponsmiths and armorsmiths inside WvW which can be purchased for Badges of Honor). Badges of Honor can also be used to purchase siege equipment. So in effect, there is a reward for killing and being good in WvW. Not to mention the Legendary weapon.
Now, I will agree to any fluff kind of upgrade. This includes new armor skins… emblems… etc… would be kinda neat if after I kill a guy a symbol appears on his screen (of my guild or something). etc… anything that does not change the core balance which is that every player regardless of play time is on the same level.
If you do what you are suggesting, players with ridiculous amounts of play time will have a leg up over all casual players. And it is not about farming noobs, it would be that I can simply beat you because I am simply stronger than you. Not skill. Not anything… but an unfair advantage over you because I have more time to play than you and/or I started playing before you.
WvW is not a waste. In fact, I have found myself preferring to do that more than PvE for the past 2 weeks. Even as I write this (at work) I am thinking “Wow, I can’t wait to get back into the WvW fray”. I play it because its fun. Not because I need the GM to hand me a reward saying “you did good”. I am not that childish. I find joy in the gameplay. If you don’t, you need to re-evaluate why you play games.
@tarnin – you mentioned a rivalry cannot be instilled. I strongly disagree. I am on Sorrow’s Furnace. You think we can’t wait another chance at Fort Aspenwood? And don’t get me started on our current adversaries (maybe after this reset). There will be rivalries, I guarantee it.
In summary – do this idea and you will lose more players than can be counted and WvW will be useless.
With my mesmer I can do probably more dps downed than an elementalist while alive (lolololol).
That’s not funny.
Unfortunately, my information comes only from WvW as I do not take part in sPvP. But, thieves move ridiculously fast, cannot be caught and when you do, they have way too many abilities to avoid damage and get away (stealth, teleport, etc…). Then, in the off chance that you do get them down, their downed abilities are also prioritized on getting away. Now, the problem is that the get away part actually works more in favor of “get my friends here”.
You may argue that thieves do a ridiculous amount of damage and I wholeheartedly agree (no one should be able to do 3/4 damage in a single shot). The spinning move they do is also ridiculously overpowered (uninterruptable, stuns, high damage, AOE, wish I had a game over button… and if you need evidence there’s a youtube where a thief takes advantage of it, quite a lot).
But the real kick in the pants is with this infinite power, they also are one of the hardest classes to kill. If you can catch up to them and you can see them long enough to stop and kill em… they still have downed abilities that make you want to sling your monitor across the room. And just about then, they’ve bought enough time for his friends to come and kick your butt. Seriously?!?
The deck is stacked largely in favor of the thief.

2.Mercenary-Tired of being in a 6 hour que? que up as a merc and be tossed into a random wvw encounter on a free slot. Not including matches where your server is involved of course. This bulks up low pop servers with mercs and mercs can receive special rewards for their action while not waiting several hours to join wvw.
snip
I too think this is a brilliant idea. But if ANet does implement it, please take into account parties (I would like to play with my group if possible). So a mercenary group could help a failing server.
EDIT: I would also like to add that ANet needs to ensure that mercenaries are popped off a server when that server’s queue begins to reach full cap. Just pop a message (with a timer or something) indicating that the server is doing well on its own and that your services are no longer required. shrug The point being not to exacerbate the queue problem.
(edited by EnochDagor.6185)
I think being able to retain guild influence would eliminate the #1 problem most people have with moving.

Not sure I’ve seen a single player RP. Honestly, RP is a dying thing in the MMORPG. Almost worth removing the RP in the name. TBH, I haven’t seen people truly RP since Everquest… and even then it was an RP server and was a rare event.
Ya, I still log in every nite. Wife yells at me lots. I surf forums at work. I still consider taking off work to play. Its just fun. PvE was a hoot (tho I thought leveling went too fast). And now I’m horribly addicted to WvW and bettering my toon. PvE is a lil shelved but I wouldn’t be surprised if I go back to it soon.
I agree and disagree with teh OP. On one hand, a siege on a tower or keep is meant to be just that…a siege. Stop allowing supply into the sieged base. If they are upgrading something, the base will be at 0 supply most likely as the workers take 10 supply each time they go to build.
However, I also agree with one of the posts. If something was to be done for this, it cannot be a hard static thing (can’t rebuild until timer ends). But instead, it should be a minimum number of repair required before the wall/door can be rebuilt (begins blocking again). As a compromise, the wall can be semi-up… in that attackers would have to jump a little bit to get through the wall (because it is there) but are not entirely blocked.
From my understanding, the Badges of Honor (the important loot) are required somewhere for something important at lvl 80 (aka legendary weapon, u need 500). So ya, they are pretty important.
Well, sure, it can be abused. Of course, you can always see who is “winning” anyway and just transfer to them. Problem is that there is still a queue. And if you go to a winning server… and a thousand other people go to a winning server… you’ll never play. So… Plus, you get rifraff that don’t know how to play WvW and ultimately do not contribute anything to the success of that server but instead hinder it… brings the server down.
But look at the plus side… I play between X-Y GMT. I see server A has trouble filling their force at that time, I change to it. I always get into WvW. Eventually others will also change to that server and a losing fight becomes a winning one. That time frame is now covered and the server can begin to compete better.
Another plus, a commander sees that population levels are high but the server almost always begins to lose between X-Y GMT. He can play at that time frame, so he changes his schedule a lil so that he can be on between those times to help coordinate and lead. (granted, I wouldn’t do this, but I know people that would).
Instead of posting multiple posts… put them all here. agree or disagree as you will, just my thoughts.
1) An option to enable mouse look without having to hold the right mouse button
2) With the previous option, another option that will allow area-targeted abilities to be centered on the current target. Ideally, it would be great if we could configure this per ability. (For example, ability X centers on current target… ability Y centers on me, etc…).
3) ANet needs to begin data farming the WvW matches and make that information exposed so that websites can be configured to begin displaying the data (such as current total scores, current tally scores, a map view, average queue time, etc…). Would also be great if ANet had some sort of display too. Also, a running tally of wins, etc… total score over a server’s lifetime, etc… give us the tools to see the WvW big picture and the overpopulation issues may begin to resolve themselves.
4) An option to display characters and such without loading the character’s specific details – aka fast load or fast display (should reduce issues of rendering invisible toons)
5) Show the WvW map from the B window so we can figure out where we want to go. Some people like to play in a defensive posture. Some like to play in a losing scenario. Some like to fight over keeps. Some like to fight over towers. Some people like to roam a map capping camps (which if there are none to cap…). Sucks to be in a queue, get to the place and find out I really wanted the other place just to enter the queue again…
6) Reduce the price for the guild armorer and weaponsmith. Quite crazy the expense there.
7) Increase zoom for the mouse… not much, but just a lil further.
8) Enable a non-clip mode for the mouse in PvE areas only – to enable the mouse to go through walls and such. Then make it so that anything between the character and the camera are transparent. Will make people a LOT happier with the camera controls.
9) Add a collectible area for anything useless received during the game (such as the little blue balls that transform you into useless skins of stuff). Bag and bank space will always trump the offhand possibility of me finding any enjoyment out of using these.
That’s all for now. Feel free to comment, add, remove, troll. I don’t care.
Cave trolls smell like mildew, forest trolls smell like dirt and moss… forum trolls smell like dung and shame.
There is, press Escape, options, controls… draw/undraw weapon. HTH.
Ok, so the fix to a glaring issue is to add an extra key press? Seriously? Do you hear yourself? Not like we don’t press enough keys as it is…
It would be great if we can see scores and such from the various WvW matches in pseudo-real-time on the website.
Trackable by an interval (say 5 minutes or so)…. Total score is obviously a good one but also the current score values (+250 etc…) over the period of the game.
This would help players to see where the server is lacking based on timezone. Some players may even be able to fix the problem better. Right now, there’s no way for anyone to know when a server’s peaks are.
