I’m glad to see Engis still have some potential; these days have been dark for the gearheads of GW2….
What I want to know is the effectiveness of this build in PVP vs its effectiveness in PVE. Any insight?
And what would you suggest for armor types, sigils, and trait point distribution?

Anything I should know before using?

Here’s some of the things I’ve noticed with the Mac Beta Client:
1. Overall, it shouldn’t make much of a difference. The game experience is very similar to a PC version with some minor differences.
2. Toolbar or Aura skills that would normally be activated using F keys (i.e. F1, F2, etc.) are considerably harder to do in mid-battle sequence. Instead of pressing a simple button, the flow of battle seems to be interrupted by having to focus on hitting the “fn” key and then one of the respective F keys. There are ways to fix this, programs that can disable the Mac functioning keys and instead make the F keys work with a single touch.
3. The world map seems to lag in the Mac Beta, most of the time sporadically. It doesn’t happen often, but it’s annoying when it does, and GW2 staff hasn’t done anything about it in the past couple updates.
4. The game itself does not require the use of right-clicking, so in that sense it is compatible with Macs. I still strongly suggest playing with a mouse or a gamepad instead of a trackpad, however, as it will affect the flow of in-game travel, battle and interaction.
I play GW2 on my Mac because out of my computers, my Mac is by far the strongest in performance and speed. This is why I use the Mac Beta client, and it seems to truly bring the full experience of GW2 to my Mac without many problems. I can connect easily with people who are playing on Macs and PCs alike. It’s just a good choice to make as long as your Mac can handle the powerhouse that is Guild Wars 2. Happy gaming, and I’ll see you in Tyria!

This is great for showing different strategies and which ones you like to use, but do you think you could add on your own opinion on the effectiveness of each skill and kit (maybe showing cons along with the pros you already listed) and how they best fit into certain strategies? Maybe compare skills and how effective they are in each situation? That would be much appreciated. Otherwise, great job. As an Engineer for a while, I feel like the essential skills were represented well.

I should add that I don’t use a trackpad at all, I have an external mouse that I hook up that makes movement and camera control somewhat easier, but still it seems as if camera control is not up to par with the rest of the game.

Med Kit vs. Healing Turret

???? My F1 heals, my med kit gives me 3 heals, my elixir gun gives me an aoe heal, gain regen and refresh all my heal skills at 25% health, my supply drop heals me,my bombs heal me, and gain a non-boon regen when using a kit. How are my self-heals limited?

I suppose I was just unaware of all the possibilities. XD Next time I won’t be so myopic as to only consider skills specific to the healing slot in the skill bar.

I have similar problems to this, especially when I drag the camera to look upwards, the camera will all of a sudden zoom really close to my character, and then I can no longer see what is above me. Camera angling and movement in general have been one of the only gripes I’ve had about this game. Please make camera control more user friendly!!!

Med Kit vs. Healing Turret

When it comes to self-healing, Engineers have kind of been left at a disadvantage. Elixir H gives good health boost and regen, but has a very long cooldown time, and by the time you need it again, it’s only halfway to being usable again. So I personally try to stay away from Elixir H.
The Med Kit seems a bit strange at first but can seem practical if used correctly. While you lose the ability to maintain an aggressive edge during battle, you become a support player to other team members. But, you can still have the Med Kit in your skill bar and just mash the Heal Self skill in the tool belt with a nice 20 second cool down. It just takes up a place in your skill bar.
The Healing Turret is…well…there’s discussion surrounding turrets, specifically that, while they might offer much needed support, they are extremely fragile and ridiculously immobile. Once you plant it but need to move somewhere else, picking it back up again will cause it to take 20 seconds to cooldown until you can place it again. While the turret heals you for the same amount Heal Self does with only 7 seconds between healing AND grants regeneration, turrets just become annoying.
So, my question is, what is your strategy? How do you best utilize the shoddy healing options we as Engineers have been given?

I would say the ability to go down two paths as a Sylvari, one that leads to purity and enlightenment, and one that leads to the shadows of a Nightmare race. Would be kind of interesting to explore that race. Other than that? Centaurs would be weird….hylek and skritt seem disadvantaged….undead?

When is it happening and how will we be able to do it when it becomes available? I have a lot of friends who bought the game with me but decided to start much later than me, and my server had filled up in between the time I started and they started. Hence, we cannot play together. I repeat: when can we guest, and what will be the limitations to guesting? Can we still gain XP and do quests and such? Will our names still appear?

Engineers: What do you want to see that we don't have?

Two things:
1. The ability to swap weapons when we don’t have a kit in our skill bar.
We don’t all run kits(even though max effectiveness reuires you too), so why are we being forced to one weapon? We’re engineers, we should be pulling all sorts of crap out of pockets. Guns, grenades, bombs, elixers, giant wrenches, and yes, more guns.

2. Mobile turrets trait and/or the toolbelt skill to make them mobile instead of boom or lockdown/overcharge that makes them actually be able to take a hit.
Turrets currently are really cruddy since they are destroyed so easily and their damage is pretty small. I think It would be pretty sweet if turrets would follow you or automatically guide themselves out of aoe.
I lied.
3. Mortar that functions as a turret when you aren’t manning it.
Sitting in your mortar isn’t always the best idea, especially in WvW where they break the second an ele looks at it funny. Where engineers already have turrets, why can’t we tweak the mortar to behave like one too? It would simply rotate between the #1 and 2# skill, or just use the #1, any amount of damage without exposing yourself using it would be fine
Why not more?
4. A nice tweak to #2 downed ability would be hold down button to pull target instead of forcing pull, for the interrupt lolz n trollz.
But seriously, there are times when we only want to interupt instead of pull. It feels like our downed skills were made with only PvE in mind.

You make some really nice points. #1 and 3 would be very convenient, but I want to talk to #2 a bit more, as that could be sweeter. Sure, it would be nice if we could advance an age and put wheels on turrets, but what if we could switch turrets between mobile and stationary? And, while mobile, they have a lesser effect but also act as decoys that take damage whenever your char is attacked. It would kind of balance things out and give more meaning to mobile turrets without making them seem like broken (possibly never-ending) team boons.

I suggest you check this old topic, specifically my own post https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/My-opinion-about-Engineer/first#post540687

Cool thanks for the post! A couple questions though:
1. Bomb kit may be nice in PvP, but what about in PvE? How would I use it effectively there? Making NPCs follow me gets to be a bit of an annoying battle tactic.
2. How can I make up for the Flamethrower’s lack of range when battling?
3. Would grenades be a better melee weapon choice? Or should I just consider not using grenades at all?

Engineer vs Elementalist

I haven’t played much with the Ele, but my main is an Engi, and being a new skill to the Guild Wars realm, it does not disappoint. It does take a lot of time and understanding to wrap your head around a strategy or two that really help you win. In lower-level and single enemy NPC PvE situations I have ways of doing the “1,2,3,4,5” method of taking out an opponent, but strategy is definitely key when working with a team or dealing with large groups of enemies. In terms of versatility, Engineers could use a little work as they are for the most part an aggressive ranged class (besides their Elixir gun, Med-kit, and Healing turret), but have many options to get used to. Turrets are good and new, as they are great for holding ground and supporting a team. What Engi’s lack in usable weapons, they gain in Weapon Kits, which, although hard to get used to at first, really do pay off once you get the hang of them. You could constantly strap on and shed Weapon Kits during a battle to constantly mold to the dynamic state of a combat sequence. My only quip (and this is pretty general for any ranged PvE char) is that it’s hard to deal a lot of damage while keeping yourself from dying. Sure, turrets can draw damage occasionally, but if you aren’t careful and get in-combat movement and dodging down, dying becomes frequent. I guess if you like practicing strategy a lot, though, maybe how Engi’s need to be constantly moving might be good for you. Hope this helps!

Weapon Kits

Entaurrus Silver.3820

I use an Asura Engineer as my main char, and starting the game I was very confused by the functionality and benefits behind using a weapon kit. Instead, I went with what seemed to be more conventional skills such as elixirs, turrets, golems, and other attack-based skills. I’d like to hear from all Engineers, however, as I don’t think I fully understand how weapon kits are supposed to work for the benefit of the player. How should weapon kits be used? How do they help Engineer builds? What in-combat benefits do they provide? What strategies should one use to get the full effect of a weapon kit?

Support Turrets?

Yeah, I agree. Engi’s would go from being very offensively-based to having a lot of different build options including a plethora of support styles. How about a turret that transports a condition from an ally to a nearby enemy every 10 seconds? Or maybe a turret that can teleport a downed ally some considerable distance away from the battle area so as to be able to heal and revive? An Elixir turret (a lot like bettadenu’s boon turret)? A turret that gives its own health to other turrets/players in the surrounding area (it lose health in this way)?

I really like the compound turret, the blocking turret and the absorbing turret.

Engineers: What do you want to see that we don't have?

Instead of having separate turret skills, why not just have a customizable turret weapon set with other tool and repair skills? It would definitely make for dynamic gameplay and more in-combat options (seeing as Engi’s can’t weapon swap). Also, what about a cluster-bomb turret that shoots a bunch of small bombs in the direction of a target and explode a couple seconds later? Would be kind of cool.

What if Engi’s could master siege weapons as well? I know they can make controllable turrets, but what about the ability to create a build around setting up small, controllable siege weapons? Maybe a weapon set, at least? Now I’m not talking about building huge trebuchets in 2 seconds, but maybe cannons or small-scale ballistas that might be helpful in both melee and siege contexts. It would be kind of nice since there is already a tool-based weapon set that could work with turrets and siege weapons.

Fan spinning & heat on macbook

This is supposed to happen, it’s nothing to worry too much about. If you have a powerful enough computer it shouldn’t be a big problem. I would suggest not putting it on your lap but rather on a cooling pad, or at least a wood surface if you don’t own a cooling pad. I’ve played for many hours on end on my 2011 MacBook Pro and I don’t experience any performance issues. Otherwise, the computer is just doing it’s job by having the fan ru n so fast as a game of this calibre overheats a processing system and graphics card very easily. The fan is more or less protecting your computer from getting damaged by heat.

World Map Lag

Entaurrus Silver.3820

I use the Mac Beta Client with my 2011 MacBook Pro that runs the game very smoothly even with all the graphics and game engine options maxed it. It truly works like a dream. The only problem I’ve ever experienced with the beta is that every now and then (and it seems quite random) when I access the world map, it has horrible lag. If I try to move the map, it takes a good 10 seconds for the map to actually move, and clicking on icons such as waypoints don’t even respond. When I try closing out and opening the map back up, that fixes the problem only half of the time. Again, it is random so it works perfectly sometime and lags horribly others. It’s a minor problem and is just annoying, but it’s the only problem I experience as the rest of the game works fine for me.
