March 26th patch broke WvW

Entropy.4732

I agree with the OP. It’s a royal mess out there. I’m very pleased more folks are playing WvW. It’s great that the numbers are up. The problem is that with the culling fix and the shiny new ranks, it has indeed made WvW a massive, lag-riddled, mega-zerg fest. And the mob mentality that comes with all these new players is quite mindless to say the least. No one is reading the team chat. No one is fortifying. No one is playing WvW the way it’s meant to be played. It’s just blob of lag vs blob of lag. At least in EB. BL is a little better if the numbers are down. The rank system is a neat idea in theory, but in practice it encourages bad player behavior. Plus, I would much rather have the old culling back and be able to fire off my skills, then see everyone and have the animation reduced to a slideshow. Not to mention that the players on my team are reduced to that generic green “invader” place holder avatar.

My only hope is that the PVE element that has flooded WvW will hit max rank in a week and go back to grinding fractals. Then maybe we’ll get our lovely WvW back.

It’s nuts out there. I MUCH preferred the old way. The skill lag is absurd. Now when I get a single skill off, I’m so kittening proud. I sit there in the zerg mashing one button hoping it will proc. It’s like…. “C’mon utility skill 3, go, go, go…. work! WORK! 3333333333333333333… I…. I think it…. YESS!!!! Damage numbers! I did it!”

Entropy.4732

I like the rank concept, but it’s really a royal mess out there. Not only is WvW suddenly PACKED with players that have no idea how it works, no one is listening to commanders or scouts. It’s a mindless mob zerging SM while the rest of our positions are neglected, not upgraded, left undefended, etc. Not only that, but the uptick in players who want ranks has created a lag-fest of massive proportions. It’s a victory to get even one skill off. If you successfully land a single hit you feel like a hero. I gripped a lot pre-patch about the low-player count, but suddenly I miss the smaller, coordinated WvW vets who were there simply for the love of the game. Now it’s a total skritt rampage out there. Maybe it’ll calm down. Hopefully it will.

Mesmer shatters a checkered square

Entropy.4732

Post patch In WvW (perhaps due to the massive amount of players) when my mesmer’s illusions shatter, instead of the shatter effect, a large rectangular square of black and white checkered boxes appears instead. At first I thought someone was throwing chess boards at me. Very odd. First time I’ve seen this since launch.

3/24 HoD + NSP vs GoM

in WvW

Posted by: Entropy.4732

Entropy.4732

I am pretty sure HoD and NSP are teaming up against GoM.

At first, GoM (green) keep is attacked by both HoD and NSP then HoD retreated and NSP takes the keep. HoD takes Aldon.
The map is divided evenly by red and blue, all fights are in the green territory. Orgoth is even white.

Then GoM attacked RQ to get supply. We were attacked by HoD from Wildcreek and attacked by NSP from Aldon (note Aldon is at the hand of HoD, but NSP did not bother to attack Aldon).

Then we assaulted Durios. We wiped out HoD defense. Then NSP zerg appeared and hit us hard. After wiping us out, they retreated without even attempting to take Durios (no HoD defense and gate is at 50%).

No fun in a 2v1 game.

This is 100% not true. And it’s a delusion that I think every server has at least once. I was convinced last week that GoM and HoD were teaming up against NSP (my server). But all my suspicions were unfounded. The reason you feel this way is probably because you guys won last week. When a server wins, they are independently perceived as more of a threat by the other servers and perhaps targeted out of fear. But the truth is that WvW is really random. Who attacks what in PUGS is often decided in a split second by someone randomly typing “Anz?” or if a commander is in charge, it’s a decision made based on supply and fortification demands. Last week we were squeezed to an inch of our life by GoM and HoD. I really felt something must be going on, but it was all just paranoia. And personally speaking, NSP is not fond of HoD due to quarrels between some guilds that transferred from NSP to HoD. As a server, we have much more resentment towards HoD than GoM. Rest assured, there’s no alliance.

I get your points, Braveheart X. And I totally agree with your overall sentiment. For the record, I play WvW a ton. And I’ve run with you many times. Yer a great commander. And I was part of your wednesday all nighter. But in this case I’m just reporting that the fight club upset a bunch of regular soldiers in WvW and caused a lot of frustration and resentment towards the commanders taking part on our server. But let’s put that behind us. How do we get NSP back to the WvW glory we used to be? You say the server is split, but what it really needs is leadership. Many times this week we had the numbers, but there were no commanders on the field. It was utter choas. GoM played very, very well. But our total lack of consistent organization and leadership at times was very much to blame. I’m sure spring break had something to do with it. And I’m sorry if my frustration came out to much in that last post. Certainly didnt mean to troll. So what’s the plan to keep NSP from sinking into T8? The fact that we won last week is encouraging and it proves when we push and the guilds work together we can win. Us regular soldiers and grunts are ready to fight for our commanders. You guys need to coordinate and get organized . We’re ready to run under your banners. Let’s turn this around.

Entropy.4732

Can I speak out against the fight club? Honestly, the whole thing was disastrous for our server (NSP). A big majority of our commanders and a good chunk of NSP players were there. At the exact moment the fight club was underway, GoM ruthlessly assaulted our areas in EB with a massive zerg and ninjaed our keep with a ton of golems. Our entire side of EB was blue. HoD was untouched. On NSP, we have limited commanders and our WvW player count is much lower then GoM, so every fighter on the ground counts. Those of us who avoided the fight club were desperately trying to defend our keep, but it was overrun by the force of GoM’s offensive and it set us back from any hope of regaining the lead. Not to mention breaking NSP morale. If the darn fight club hadn’t been going on, we might have held them off. I’m not trying to say that GoM deliberately staged the fight club in order to distract our commanders and pull off their assault, but that was the end result. Either there needs to be a multi-server wide truce during the fight club, or we should not get sucked into having them. Either way, I vote no fight club. Wet blankets FTW!

I went Sylvari male. The Sylvari fit well with Mesmer IMO. Their starting area is incredible. Their skills are useful, personal story interesting, and their aesthetic meshes well with the mesmer approach. Mysterious, illusory, mystical, freakish. Plus… Bioluminesance!??? Best race trait ever. Asura DO have radiation field tho. That skill meshes well with Chaos Storm and glamour skills. Human female gear does look cool, but you have to suffer through the awful human personal story and starting areas. Plus I think male light armor is underestimated. Some of those designs are awesome. I love looking like a royal dandy from the 18th century. And on my Sylvari it looks very glam rock.

Entropy.4732

Hey there phantasmagoric Mesmers!

I’m looking for a build that fits my playstyle in WvW. I’m not much for solo or harassing. I prefer to roll with a group, buffing my allies and debuffing / destroying the other group. Often times we bump up against a rampaging zerg in WvW and a standstill occurs that can last a long time. I’m looking for a build that will destabilize the other zerg. Perhaps allow me to port in and throw down various skills, then get the heck out of there. I’ve seen videos to this effect where a mesmer will wreck / severely weaken an entire zerg allowing their allies to sweep in and finish the job. Any suggestions? Thanks!

If it was an extreme generalization think we’d complain about it on the forums? Why would I bring up not fighting players of quality under group sizes of 10 if it happened often? Believe me I wish we had known groups to fight every night. Same thing as Ar and BP, all just ran in 10+ and when they didn’t they lost usually… There’s the answer. There are not competitive people willing to rely on the play of only a few others to beat people of their caliber or better. That is simply a fact otherwise people would do it more.

Did PAXA really abandon NSP? If so, please change your signature, sir:

If we have mounts that boost speed on top of our regular speed boosts it would just be too fast. Are you thinking they would run at regular speeds determined by the player without any boost? My mesmer is so slow any horse I’m sitting on would look like a stumbling, arthritic turtle at that pace.

How To Be a Good Commander???

Entropy.4732

I really have to disagree with this. I’m a devoted WvW soldier (not a commander) and I never use voice chat for various technical reason. Many players I know are the same. By not having the simple consideration as a commander to type commands in /map and /team you are losing players like me and your zerg will dwindle significantly. I don’t roll with commanders who won’t talk to their grunts. Now you may take the elitist tact and say, “Pug players! Who needs ’em! Good riddance!” But the end result will be that many PUG players will still cluster to your tag, but now they’ll be uniformed of your strategies and tactics so more likely to mess up your plans, get spotted, or draw your zerg into unnecessary fights. It’s really not a sacrifice for a commander to type a few simple words to us non-voice chat grunts to let us know their plans and targets. And frankly, it’s infuriating when a commander refuses to do so. Even just “Umber” – “Fall back” – “Get spelden first” “Ball up on me” “Build Cata here” are extremely helpful commands and fairly easy to type last time I checked.

Given that commanders are often overwhelmed, it is typically just as good if there is a trusted “lieutenant,” who is on voice chat and can type the commands out. Often there are people who will habitually do this.

I’m completely fine with that. As long as someone in the know is there to disseminate accurate intel to the grunts, that works.

Entropy.4732

A good commander knows where to place siege. A better commander rarely uses siege, especially defensive siege. The best defense is to wipe the attackers.

A good commander doesn’t type. A better commander uses voice chat and the followers use it also. They also don’t yell and scream at the group in voice chat.

A good commander knows the makeup of their group. A better commander knows what tactics (combos) that group can do. They also recognize the tactics of the opposition and know how to counter.

You can tell the better commanders in voice chat. Orders are clearly given, followed by the group without much non-combat static. A good commander will use commands like “push right”, “back up the stairs”, “stack here” instead of “keep up”, “get to my position”, “follow me”

Entropy.4732

IMO the most important thing is a deep and thorough knowledge and experience of siege placement, the capabilities of siege, and what siege the current flow of supply will allow either yourself or the enemy. You can learn Sun Tzu off by heart, you can get a degree in group psychology, but still the difference between success and failure can be a treb placed a few feet out of position or an incorrect assessment of how much seige/supply will be needed to handle a situation. Best commander can with a single glance tell what seige will / won’t work on an enemy keep, and knows all the best spots to counter enemy trebs etc. Bad commanders build trebs too far away to hit a tower, try to build rams under enemy superior AC, and send golems at enemy cannons.
Battle tactics, war strategy, and charismatic leadership are completely useless if you don’t have a complete mastery of game mechanics.

Good points.

How To Be a Good Commander???

Entropy.4732

Something that’s not getting much attention here, but is extremely important:

Be decisive.

You will make bad decisions. You will make mistakes. You will go after one objective when you should have pursued another. You will attack when you should have defended. You will defend when you should have attacked. These things will happen. The important thing is that you make the decision to do one thing or another, and you make that decision (relatively) quickly.

A group working together, and reacting quickly, but doing the wrong things will still be more successful, and more enjoyable than a group making better decisions, but not reacting to things and constantly jumping back and forth between strategies. You need to adjust when conditions dictate adjustment, but at the same time you need to follow through on what you’re doing. When you start jumping back and forth or loitering around, you lose people. Outside of maybe T1, the one thing you can’t afford is to let people lose interest.

This is a very good point. I second this. Keep things moving. Keep the momentum even if things go south.

Entropy.4732

Another great thing about Moon is he never takes us on fool’s errands. He sets us on tasks he knows we are capable of accomplishing. I was in EB on off hours and a new, inexperienced commander turned on his tag. He led us grunts on a series of absurd missions we were clearly outmanned for that resulted in us wiping several times and losing a few golems. The worst moment occurred when he deserted us in a crisis. He led us into a quagmire where we were being attacked from both sides. Our Zerg had a few downed players and was desperately trying to defend our position. Our commander typed “follow me” and ran off with the few players that could get away. The rest (majority of the zerg) couldn’t get away or didn’t see the chat message and were left commander-less to die alone in confusion and frustration. Then the commander flamed everyone for not following him. A good commander should know when their Zerg is caught in a mess and can’t follow and in that case stay and go down with the ship. I don’t mind wiping if my commander is willing to die by my side and joke about it with us after.

A good commander will understand that defense is the best offense. I respect a commander who keeps the targets we acquire. Nothing demoralizes a group of grunts faster than being led on a fruitless raid against SM and then losing our towers and supply camps because our attention was directed elsewhere or no fortifications were made on recently flipped targets.

Lastly, any commander worth their salt will give us grunts something to do, even if we’re losing or have the “outmanned” buff. There is always something to do. If we can’t take towers, tell us to grab supply camps. Heck I’ll even go after Dolyaks if a commander wants me to. What I hate as a grunt is logging on and saying “Hey! Where do I go? Where do you need back up? What’s the plan?” and I’m met with radio silence or other grunts just running to where swords are crossed. If you’re the commander, you’re a director. A CEO. Give us grunts a plan, a goal, a script. We need missions and objectives no matter how small. Lastly any tag is better than no tag. Please turn on your tag if no commander is running. I was in BL last night and there was zero commanders around cuz of saint patrick’s day and it was utter chaos. All us grunts were trying to police ourselves, turning on each-other, wandering around aimlessly looking for leadership.

We soldiers need our commanders. But we WILL start to rebel or go solo if we are being led by a commander that doesn’t know what they’re doing or abuses us vocally. A good commander should also be respectful in general. It’s rare, but if a commander gets too insane on chat or starts using racist / sexist / homophobic / transphobic / anti-Semitic / offensive language, I’ll stop following them altogether. I want to feel like my commander is a good person. Someone I can look up to and respect. Like superman. Us grunts may be crude and weird, but as a commander you need to be held to a higher standard of conduct.

One final thing (sorry this is so long). Cosmetics. This may sound superficial, but you should look good as a commander. Sport your legendaries, get your best armor out, look amazing. Not only do legendaries help a zerg follow your footsteps, but it impresses us grunts and inspires us to fight for you. Obviously this is NOT necessary to be a good commander, but it helps inspire the troops. Alexander the Great wasn’t just a brilliant strategist. He was also very handsome and charismatic. Achillies had his famous suit of armor. King Arthur had his sword Excalibur. Props are important.

If you learn the commander trade well you will attract loyal grunts like me who will flock to your banner and fight to the death for you. Also, plug future WvW nights in game. Saying: “Hey all, big WvW push tonight. Make sure you log on. I’ll be on later” is really helpful. Good luck out there! Godspeed!

How To Be a Good Commander???

Entropy.4732

I’m gonna try to give a grunt’s perspective of what makes a good commander.

Not everyone is meant to be a commander. You gotta know your place and how you best fit into the team. I am not a commander, I’m a grunt. A soldier. I need a commander to follow. I’m one of those players who will log on to WvW and look for a commander tag and try to get into their Zerg. Usually I’ll go for commanders I know and trust, like the ones from my guild. I’ll join the group and fight my heart out for the commander. I love WvW, I obey orders, and will do any manner of boring supply run junk if I believe in the commander.

This, as a grunt, is key. I need a commander I BELIEVE in. One who inspires victory, who makes carefully considered decisions and knows the mechanics of the game BETTER than I do. A truly exemplary commander will gently teach as she/he leads. A good commander is a good teacher. My favorite commander is Moontrance from my guild TFG on NSP. He will gently instruct his army about tricks, tips, and strategy as we play. He keeps us informed about what we are doing and WHY we are doing it. He never keeps us in the dark or mocks us grunts for not knowing all the ins and outs. I’ve been playing for a few years now and there are still aspects of WvW I’m ignorant about. I’m a grunt. You need something built, I’ll build it. You want something dead? I’ll kill it. I support my group, I’ll buff my group, I’ll rez my group, I’ll do anything you ask, but don’t expect me to know more than I do. Remember, I’m a jar-head grunt. You’re the commander. You command, I follow.

A good commander will also call out destinations in both Team chat AND map, not just voice chat. Grunts like me aren’t in mumble or voice chat. I only rely on /team and /map and /guild to know where to go and what to do. And when I first started to play, I pulled a noob card and only had /map on my channel. This is true of many new players. Continuing to type the next target is really helpful to get grunts to join your Zerg.

Mine will sometimes say: “My destiny is taking root!” when I level up.

When health is low, he’ll mutter: “Death stalks me…”

Sometimes he says “Gave it my all…” in a sad, depressed manner. Although I’m not sure what prompts this.

My favorite though is on the battle field he will occasionally yell: “Did you SEE that???”

I guess that works if you ARE evil in real life. I’m quite a good person. Thus it’s fun to be the opposite in a game.

Heh. I gotta say, there are two major effects of the censorship.

1. The word “kitten” has changed forever for me. It suddenly seems like the worst of all curse words because it’s every curse word imaginable.

2. Second, I’ve started self-censoring when I post. I find myself writing in “kitten” directly instead of waiting for the censorship mechanism to kick in.

By far the funniest result of the censorship was a recent post where somebody wrote the curse: “You kitten Mother-kittener!”

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Please don’t encourage this. The real money auction house in Diablo 3 was a disaster. I tried it out and honestly it felt strange. Some poor kitten bought a sword from me for $8. At first I felt elated. Then I just felt sad, like I had ripped someone off. Who knows what kid with their parent’s credit card can get suckered into spending $100 on items. Plus, GW2 is all about putting in the time to get the reward. Yes, you can purchase gems and sell them for gold, but the exchange rate is not good and it keeps players from doing it because it’s easier and much cheaper to just go on a dungeon run. The major thing to avoid is a real money system between players. It changes everything, especially the tone of the game. When I see a player sporting amazing armor and a legendary, I want to assume they worked hard for it in game. Not that they paid for it. Anet has the right idea making store purchases be basically cosmetic. Let’s not encourage a money based economy. Everything’s working fine.

The devs have stated that Player Characters will not be evil. This is to avoid generating needless division in the community based on alignment. All PCs are heroes.

That said, I wouldn’t mind an antihero option. Basically, make us pick between being Batman or being the Punisher. Do I go with the more difficult task that puts me above blame, or the quick and dirty route that walks a fine line between good an evil.

Make the whole expansion about whether your character believes the ends justify the means. If the story was smaller and more personal, you could even have drastically different endings.

Gah! Arrrrgg… guh… but I’ve ALWAYS played evil characters in MMO’s. Hurts… it hurts…. the light… burns!! It burnssss! Fine. FINE! My sylvari will stay with the Pale Tree.

Incredable. Those dance moves are amazingly well rendered and so, SO creative. I also love the way they are class and gender specific. I’d pay for them without question.

Oh GOD yes. I want to be evil. Please, PLEASE let me join the nightmare court! If they do this though, the other option should be available to characters that want to become MORE good. An angelic route to contrast the demonic route, if you will. And I like the idea of certain armor and weapons which reflect your alignment choice unlocked only for those that complete that plot arc.

I’m sure this has been brought up in other threads, but this change would really make my day. Our characters look so naked standing there without their hard-earned weapons. This is especially true for folks that have worked ages to get their Legendaries. Our weapons are just as much a part of our characters as our armor. I’m not sure of how difficult it would be in terms of coding, but I’m sure everyone would love this change. It should go by your last equipped weapon set. Thanks!

Just want to say it was a total blast playing HoD and GoM this week. You guys are real class acts. And, regardless of score, I think we all won this week. All except those meddlesome Krait. Hate those worthless krait bottom-feeders.

Plenty of small guilds that are recruiting on NSP. Ask Jscull or possibly osif? They probably know the gm’s and officers better than I do. I’m terrible with remembering names.

I’ve still gotta start my Asura only WvW guild, “Death From Below”. Should happen one of these days.

YOU: A massive, gorgeous, Norn mesmer female with a step that shook the earth.
ME: A bizarre, mohawk-sporting, effete, Sylvari mesmer-man.
WHERE: NSP/HoD/GoM Eternal Battlegrounds
WHAT: I saw your massive shape gracefully descend from the bridge near Durios Gultch. You were drifting in a pink haze of omniscient butterflies. Eyes large and limpid brown like a cow’s noble flank. I moved towards you with unbridled exuberance only to see with regret that you were on the GoM server, and I NSP. When you started to attack me with an earnest look on your adorable face, I took it as a compliment. We weaved our mysterious purple energy together in a delicate dance of clones, replications, illusions, self-reflection and glorious, glorious pink butterflies. It was pure, celestial delight.
Until your friends on GoM showed up and beat the living bajesus out of me. I was left coughing blood and bile at your feet. Desperately mashing my downed abilities, hoping you would understand my morse code message of ardor and affection. Apparently you did, summoning a ball of brilliant light, jumping up into the air, and bringing it down on my face. “Ahhhh!” I collapsed into nothingness. Dead as doorknobs. But content to die at your hands my dear.

Okay, NSP! Last big push! Let’s win this thing. As of 4:40am GoM is pulling a last ditch hail mary effort to catch up and beat our lovely server by logging on late, late, late night and flipping a bunch of stuff. BL is almost all blue, Eb next. They are up +375 right now. Course we ARE 16,000 ahead but they are gaining every hour so if you’re an early riser log on and beat them back, you magnificent NSP kittens…

Move loitering NPCs away from our supply!

Entropy.4732

This is kind of a minor quip, but the NPC workers in WvW that loiter around the supply in keeps and towers are a royal pain owing to the fact that “F” is the command key for “collect supply” AND the key for “chat”. Countless times I’ve run up to collect supply only to, by accident, talk to the NPC workers instead owing to their proximity to the supply. Then I have to close the chat window and climb up further onto the supply pile to get the proper prompt.

Isn’t it time we passed a royal edict to keep these worthless peons at least 10 feet from our valuable supply when they’re not upgrading the keep? Must they hover around it like moths to a flame? Just a minor fix. Love the game. Thanks!!

Guys guys guys!!! We discovered in guild chat who is obviously at fault for all the siege in the keep, it’s sooooooooo obvious I don’t know how none of us realized this before, it’s…Anvil Rock!!!!!

Wait, wait, wait. Is this real? How confirmed is this? What happened in T6?

Quite curious now.

No, no. Just a joke. See my post above.
