I dont believe that’s true.

I think its just a bar that will keep ticking and end in two weeks, regardless of player actions.

Nice bit of flavor though.

Im dubious that I’ll actually see the new content. Adding three instances to the same rotation that’s a year old does nothing for me.

Here’s hoping they’re seperate for the 2 weeks of the update before getting lost in the shuffle.

I think where the failure is lies in the rewards. You don’t get nowhere near enough rewards for doing DEs compared to other things, because karma is not very useful. Also, doing something extremely short and simple like killing a champion gives the same if not more rewards than a long DE like escorting someone, so no one does the escorts.

We agree, this is something we’ve been discussing a lot lately and working on some various answers for, but I’m curious:

What rewards would you like to see from rewards? Would they be different when you’re leveling up than when you’re level 80? What would motivate you to want to go around the world playing as many different events as possible, rather than the same 4-5 over and over again?

Some of the fun challenges we are currently solving, but it’s great to hear peoples thoughts on this subject as well.

I got a weird idea.

What if everytime you successfully completed an event, you get a “<zone> Fame” buff on your character. It’d work like those on kill sigils in weapons, except itd stack on succession of an event. The buff would only apply to the character as long as it stayed in the zone, resetting upon leaving.

It can buff mundane things like stats on your character… exp/gold/karma…

Or you can get a bit more creative… like it lowers WP costs in the region as you gain stacks. Merchants charge you less gold/karma based on your stacks… or buy back your junk for more coin. You can repair your armor for less. if you can craft in the zone, the chances of boosted crafting exp goes up. Maybe even access to locked dungeons.

Just spitballin.

I..don't really care.

Should I feel bad for not caring? It’s five days away still, when it arguably should’ve been part of the Tower of Nightmares release itself (after finishing the 50 Toxic Spore task, you could then enter the tower or do an extra task/set of tasks to gain entry).

I mean, why not just get a Searing Cauldron (we found one in Orr, and there’s one in Ascalon as a commune point, I think) or build a huge Megalaser to just take out the tower with minimal risk? With any luck, we could take out that invasive weed too while we’re at it.

Oh well. I’ll wait and see.

A Searing Cauldron would obliterate all of Kessex Hills… and Queensdale, Gendarran, most of Caledon and Brisban, and kill much of the Tengu in the Dominion of the Winds before we get a chance to play as them. Remember the last time it was used it destroyed pretty much the entire country of Ascalon.

Dont think you’d get a clear shot with a Mega Laser either… its in the middle of the zone. Tequatl was shot over the open ocean.

Personally, I say we storm the kitten with a legion of Alpha Seige Golems.

One quick thought about achievements in the LS…

I really dont like the trend of achievements gating off content of the LS. This has happened both in Scarlet’s Invasion and this Halloween… in Scarlet’s case actually walling off previously accessible content I had been enjoying up to that point.

I’ll grind out achievements if I choose to. Requiring me to in order to access content that likely is going away pretty soon really rubs me the wrong way.

I am kinda worried about the feedback regarding content release pacing being too fast and should instead be released monthly instead of biweekly. Thing is I have a feeling having it monthly might make things worst.

valid arguments

I think this might be something that needs some careful thinking because I am afraid the obvious answer (twice the time should make it less stressful) might actually make it worst. Unless the problem like I said above is that there are months were you’re not able to play for 2 weeks at a stretch of course. For that issue this will work pretty well.

I agree a lot with this, though I consider the achievements attached to the LS as a seperate issue. (a good one too)

I dont have problems keeping up with the content given out every two weeks, Im lucky in that regard. My issue is the content itself being held back because the pace is so fast.

I wouldnt support a ubiquitous mandate from an update every two weeks to an update every month. Ideally, the content of the update itself would determine how much time “in the pot” the update would take.

If the grand finale of Scarlet’s plan is a huge epic event with a confluence of NPCs, big open world events, a huge dungeon, and whatever else needs to be put in final chapter… but it needs more than 4 months to create all that, then allow that to happen. Naturally, such a massive event would be in game for quite a bit… it would be very disappointing if the final showdown with Scarlet lasted only two weeks.

Basically, I dont feel, as a player, held hostage by the pace of the LS… I feel that the quality of the content and plot is.

(so many good points in this thread… only so much I can post at work! blagh…)

With time in mind i don’t think a week is long enough to discuss this topic so we will keep the close date open. At the end of the day i want to make sure we have enough time to discuss the topic with you and not feel rushed.

i don’t think this discussion thread is what I thought it would be . Where has the collaboration been I see only players bringing up points and the one anet employee who responded has simply explained his view on the situation. there hasn’t been any actual collaborative development. To help this discusion move further could you say what you mean by collaboration and if you think this thread has lived up to what you intended so far?

He’s all but said he hasnt had the time he wants to respond in this thread as much as he probably wants. He’s extending the “deadline” of the discussion to accomodate this. The OP has a disclaimer saying Anet response would likely be pretty sparse right now.

Most of Jory’s lines suit the noir detective style that her intro cinematic also had.

Put her voice behind a sleazy sax and imagine her standing in a dimly lit alley in a trenchcoat and you get the idea.

There is a very general problem.

You cannot have content that creates an evolving world on the one hand and make it stay forever on the other hand. It’s a contradiction. If you defeat the dredge and flame legion, that invasion is no longer there and it makes no sense to still have its dungeons around. Either evolution or persistence. You cannot have both.

I choose evolution. It means, I cannot repeat old content and it will be forever lost and only in my memory or in the history books. That’s the price to pay for an evolving world.

Except that the world hasn’t ‘evolved’ through the LS. You take away the current LS patch and you have essentially the same exact game that was around a year ago. What has evolved?

That isnt true. When Molten Alliance patch was removed it left behind the refugees. Those refugees had direct impact on the next LS segement. They build a ton of infrastructure in southsun. When that ended the infrastructure was left there but the refugees themselves moved over to cragstead. By the end of that Cragstead was rebuilt from a town in ruins. The refugees are there to this day, you can go talking to them. Even little things remain… go to Holbrak to the area where the refugees camp were you can still see to this day the charred ground when the campfires were set and the lack of snow patches where the tents were pitched. The world doesnt reset to its exact state before the patch ones the patch is removed. little changes remain. The story does evolve. Those poor refugees are a good example. created in january they’re still in game today.

The “world” may have evovled, but the game did not. Wayfarer Foothills and Diessa are exactly the same post Flame and Frost, barring 2 new areas that contain no gameplay within them.

When the same LS “chapter” introduces a new enemy faction with new mechanics, two new unique NPCs, and one of the most highly regarded dungeons in the games (albeit short) lifespan… I dont want to be left with only some nameless refugees and different colored pixels in the corner of Hoelbrak.

Actually they did. Wayfarer and Diessa both still have the gyzers that formed while the molten alliance were experimenting with stuff in the facilities. And wayfarer now has cragstead which wasnt there before the molten alliance. Not just that but cragstead itself has evolved post Molten alliance. It started as a village in ruines burned to the ground right after motlen alliance. But after the secrets of southsun the refugees leaving that god forsaken place moved there and started to rebuild it. Now its back to normal though there are still some works there. You can also go there and talk with some of the refugees including the ones for whom you got the momentos back during the molten alliance LS. They even have new dialog to thank you and tell you how they did since you helped them getting back on their feet.

Change doesnt mean new dungeons, change means well things are different then what they used to be before that change. I understand what you’re saying and so does arenanet thats why they promised to get MF back as a fractal after all. That however doesnt change the point that change does happen as the living story plays its course. Those NPCs are just used and thrown away. Both Braham and Rox+frostbite played central part in other LS releases like Scarlet’s funhouse and the refugees where the central theme for the secrets of southsun.

I suppose technically they did. But those changes are inconsequential.

Games dont evolve or change because a ruined city gets built in the background or NPCs move somewhere. This is an interactive medium. A game changes when new mechanics, new ways of playing, or at least content that gets players to play differently are introduced. The MA enemies and dungeon provided that, at least to some degree. With those gone, the gameplay… and by extension the world… becomes stale.

Thankfully Anet has started rectifying that to some extent.

I actually had a question about this insatiable need for a dragon-centric story from everyone.

Mainly it is because other villians are out to conquer or subjugate while the very existence of the elder dragons threatens to eraddicate Tyria.

Who cares if alliance number one takes over zone ‘A’ if an elder dragon is going to awaken and destroy the planet?

As a hero, who do you stop? The guy invading fort <whatever> or the primal force of nature that is going to bring about the apocalypse?

I thought the dragons were only there to suck back the excess magic in the world… so hmm if we’re fighting them, aren’t we the one that will destroy the planet?

And that would be a very interesting plot development and moral dilemma, IMO.

I actually had a question about this insatiable need for a dragon-centric story from everyone. I did not play the original GW, and while I do like dragon fights because they tend to be epic in scale, why is everyone in love with them? Sure, they are neat, but surely, and arenanet has shown this capability even in GW2, there are other epic villains and bosses to fight. I know as per lore there are certain dragons out there in the guild wars universe. Putting scarlet aside, because I think she is a shell of a villain, would you folks not be happy if the next major villain were not a dragon? If it were some enormous titan or something?

Which brings be to another thought which relates to dragons and a reason why people might love them so much: Dragons tend to be huge which lead to epic encounters and cutscenes. Sure, agreed. But you can have an even more interesting villain in the form of a humanoid such as Scarlett, if she was written better. Take Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2. Arguably one of the better villains in a video game from recent years. His character just dogs you all game, ruthless, belittles you, holds nothing back. In a way, I feel the writers of Scarlet tried to emulate Handsome Jack a bit, but fell a bit short. And then when you do fight him, it is a pretty interesting fight. I think he was well written. If scarlett had more character to her, her form as a sylvari would be completely acceptable to me. Size and form are irrelevant.

What Im trying to say is..Im trying to wrap my head around this need to have GW2 villains be dragons or large and epic in scale. They are fun, but there is no need if the character is well written. Is it because they relate to the lore of guild wars more?

I sometimes believe that if they’d plucked Scarlet out of the LS and replaced her with a champion of one of the other Elder Dragons, the LS plot would be a bit more palettable.

The Dragons, for all their comparisons to forces of nature, have two things Scarlet has yet to provide. Credibility and motive.

The dragons have history. They’re as old as the planet. Just one of them waking up has consequences on a global scale. Hell, Scarlet only has the opportunity to use the Krait in her plans because an Elder Dragon drove them out of the Endless Ocean. You see the effects of Dragon corruption in at least half the zones in the game. That is a threat.

Scarlet has seemed to suddenly appear out of thin air, with a backstory that was poorly protrayed in game, and when found out of game seemed almost nonsensical. Her personality so far doesnt help anyone take her seriously as well. Then, apart from an instanced dungeon in TA, Scarlet has not only failed to leave an impact on the world at all… but has routinely failed to accomplish anything thanks to the player character. (I admit the latest update may change that in a few weeks)

Also, the Dragons have purpose. They’re awake to devour the magic of the world and bring it back to balance. Their actions move toward that goal… at least based on the only encounter we’ve had so far. One of the ways you’re able to defeat Zhaitan in the first place is cutting off his stream of magic he feeds on, weakening him.

Scarlet may have been introduced a few months ago, but her plans have been in motion since January… and the playerbase still has no idea what she’s up to, and why, in the face of huge, known threats like the Dragons, should we even care?

I’d like to say thanks to everyone who posted constructive and/or detailed feedback regarding the Living World story and characters in this thread. While I can’t post spoilers about future content, I would like to address some of the opinions that have been brought up. Bear in mind I may have touched upon these topics in other threads that were tied to previous releases (or mentioned within interviews on external Web sites) but I’ll put my most recent thoughts here for discussion.

Story Pacing & Continuity
There are some folks who feel that the Living World story is moving too slowly and/or that the themes and plots feel disjointed between releases. I somewhat agree with this sentiment.

We took a long time to build up the various alliances before we revealed Scarlet’s involvement. Some of this was due to factors external to the team, but some was by design. We first wanted to show changes in the open world with “teaser” content like in the Flame & Frost releases and then add the bigger content later once the teams and development pipelines were up to speed.

One of the challenges of the semi-monthly release cycle is that we’re limited in how much content we can put inside each one. This can be a good thing if the story is very focused and doesn’t have a lot of moving parts. The problem we ran into is that we needed to develop a larger cast of non-player characters to account for every playable race, and then create the content in which to put them. That sort of build up takes time and incurs an amount of long-term development debt.

The end goal was to have multiple arcs going simultaneously like on more modern television shows, but where a weekly drama might have 20 – 40 minutes of character time to get things moving, we have maybe half that (or less). So after a few releases it started to feel like there were a lot of unresolved plot threads out there and you (the player) had no way of knowing which ones would be resumed.

Perhaps a better approach would have been to start and resolve each arc before introducing another.

The upside to all of this is that we are aware of the items that we introduced but haven’t finished yet. We’re planning on resolving as much as we can by the time the Scarlet arc concludes. (Yes, there will be a conclusion.)

This is what I dont get. I dont see the cadence of releases as a challenge. To be blunt, I see it as Anet cutting off their nose to spite their face (to incorrectly use the analogy).

This game is huge. If the next part of the Living Story has a lot of content in it, hold off for weeks and put it in! There’s a WvW Season that can take up my playtime. I’ve got alts I want to gear and level. I have sPvP to attempt to stop sucking at. There is so much other content that ISNT Living Story to keep, at least myself, occupied.

And if I know there’s a good, fleshed out “chapter” on the way, the anticipation for the next one will be much higher… especially now.

Television moves a lot faster.

I dont mean airing new content every week instead of our two. I mean the plot, character development, etc happen much quicker than in our LS.

Regarding the plot… it feels like it hasnt moved at all. From Flame and Frost to now, the plot of the LS can be summed up as “Scarlet does some stuff, usually behind the scenes.” This story has gone on since March with no discernable progress. Any curiosity I had towards Scarlet’s motives has pretty much evaporated… I feel if I havent gotten an answer in 8 months then there likely isnt one. It’s a lot to ask of me to stay invested in a story where very little progress has occured in so long.

A weaker story could be carried by memorable characters… but character development has moved at an even slower pace than the plot has. Rox is exactly the same charr I met at the hatchery. Braham’s tension with his mother and missing love interest have been completely dropped, he’s actually regressed to a generic fight lovin’ norn. Majory and Kasmere havent had much impact… Faren is the only character developed at all, going from bungling pansy to comedic hero at the Jubilee.

Pretty much anything interesting about those characters is told outside the game. What TV show keeps the interesting, relatable, and unique aspects of their main characters out of the program completely? Something as simple as a few lines of dialog from Rox about why she doesn’t want to mess around with the bombs in the Molten Facility… a bit of explanation why Majory prefers to work independently… Braham can mutter to himself how he’d rather be out in Divinity’s Reach than back around the mother who abandoned him… Scarlet dropping credible threats beyond “I’ll teach you a lesson” and “I know something you dont know”

This is the stuff that I feel any update to an MMO needs… and also what every episode of a television program needs. It needs to either progress the over arching plot (at the very least give the viewer/player the feeling it is) or develop the shows/games characters… at the very least providing a bit of insight about them within the context of that episode. As an MMO, there’s even the third and fourth options of developing/advancing the world itself with something like new zones or advancing the game itself through skill updates, new game types etc.

It’s just that from my perspective, there’s been very little of that… and as a result little reason to invest myself in this story, world, or game.

she isn’t. she’s just the only “bossmob” out there since making us fight dragons seems to be too much of a bother to anet.

… You guys do know that she is most likely the character who will bring us those new dragons right?

The Elder Dragons dont need “bringing about.”

Kralkatorrik has already awoken and caused that wonderful Brand through Ascalon.
Primordus has been awoken by the Asura and is responsible for driving them to the surface.
Jormag has killed at least one of the Norn’s Spirits of the Wild and is actively corrupting Norn and Kodan… and has driven both races southward.
“Bubbles” has also driven the Krait and Quaggan further out of the Endless ocean to the point they’ve taken up residence in lakes inland.
Zhaitan is the whole plot of the Personal Story.

All the Elder Dragons, with the exception of Zhaitan (if he IS really dead) are active in Tyria right NOW. We dont need Scarlet to make them a threat worth taking down.

……Now I’m envisioning her popping up in all the other Fractals. Randomly tripping people in the Swamp… booting people into the lava in the Volcano… petting the Champion bunny in the crazy Asura one…

That’s how we should “defeat” her… since we likely wont be allowed to actually eliminate her as a threat. Shunt her into the Fractals where we can ignore her existence for the rest of the game’s lifespan.

Watch the video.

“Dark allies toiled in secret driven by whispered promises and madness” That pretty much defines Scarlet’s actions over the past nine months.

Traditionally non technological races building a massive evil structure… or at least some merging of tech and magic. Mostly Flame and Frost here, and a bit of a stretch I admit… but still.

Nevermind the obvious overarching toxic/pollutant/twisted plant motif continuing from her actions in the previous dungeon.

I know its a joke around the forums, but Warriors are pretty much the definition of class balance in this game.

You can take a warrior and build it to do pretty much anything you want. A burst direct damage DPS build, a tanky/support build, a condition damage build, a CC build… and all those builds compare very well (to put it lightly) to similar builds in other professions.

When every profession has a build that can accomplish whatever the player wants out of it, like a warrior, we’ll have balance.

Without going into any details. For a while now, I have felt increasingly nervous about putting time and effort into this game. The reason is that due to company policy, I don’t feel confident that I am protected from account termination.

In light of recent events, I am looking for ways to protect myself and my in-game assets. Meaning, I would like to hear your advice regarding how to make sure that if my account is terminated, my girlfriend and/or friends who choose to continue playing, will have access to anything of value.

Is the guild bank the best option?

The best option is to take out insurance based on the expected real life value of having to purchase all the lost in game assets.

I’m sure you will be able to find a willing insurance company and just as sure it will be a long painful process trying to collect from them.

:)

I wish this existed in game. I would pay for account insurance. :P

This topic is precisely what they meant by “cleverly disguised” personal attacks.

I am by no means “cleverly attacking” anyone. Policy is policy and it has been made clear that it can not be discussed, which I have no interest in doing any longer.

I’ve accepted the policy and with that, I have accepted the consequences. I am looking for the best advice for keeping valuable items from being lost.

I’m still looking for an answer about creating a guild, will it be lost if my account is terminated? Would it be better for someone else to create the guild that I can place all my items into?

You are making a cleverly disguised attack by trying to provoke a controversy around worrying about being “unreasonably” banned in-game by moderators.

Nah. Slight paranoia is not a bannable offense.

Sarcastically trotting out the rules in threads that dont violate them because you think theyre unfair might be though.

Make a guild bank and store all your valuables in it. Make sure that relevant parties have access to it, so that they can withdraw/deposit.

If I create a guild, and am then terminated, does the guild remain? If it does, do they retain the rights to take things out?

I cant imagine the guild wouldnt remain. Terminating one account shouldnt punish potentially innocent guild members. That’s a good question for support.

Insulting & non-constructive:
“Anet isn’t competent enough with this game”
“Anet lied to us”
“Fire whoever designed this dungeon/weapon/armor”
“whoever designes this dungeon/weapon/armor clearly has no clue”

You consider these personal attacks?

Yeah… nothing insulting about being called an incompetent, clueless liar who’s useless at his job.

I would suggest that a comment about ANET is not a personal attack at all, no matter how insulting it is towards the company. ANET is not a person. Fire ‘so and so’ is more a request than a personal attack and I think perma banning someone for saying ‘someone’ doesn’t have a clue would be an extreme response.

These in my opinion are all pretty much why everyone is concerned about how the enforcement will be carried out.

Fact is, thats the rules now. Have an opinion on the rules and provide feedback on them all you want. But follow the rules when you do.

If they define insulting Anet is a personal attack, then it is. There’s no debate.

You did not answer the overall question. Profanity, name-calling pretty easy to define. The issue is the vagueness of the term ‘personal attack’ in light of the fact that the moderation team has a rather…. random approach to moderation.

Also for the record ‘you have been warned’ comment makes people take the official post…. probably in a different direction than intended.

We’re definitely working on retooling and improving Moderation and messaging.
Using locoman.1974’s post to reiterate:

Constructive:
“I don’t like the way Anet is handling the game”
“I find this new dungeon path boring because XXXX”
“I think these armor/weapon designs are ugly”

Insulting & non-constructive:
“Anet isn’t competent enough with this game”
“Anet lied to us”
“Fire whoever designed this dungeon/weapon/armor”
“whoever designes this dungeon/weapon/armor clearly has no clue”

You can discuss things we’ve said (manifesto, dev posts, blog posts, interviews) and disagree with them or even criticize. We’re okay with that. When it crosses over to insults is where we draw the line.

I have to ask though, instead of lies, should we call them “U Turns” instead?

Because some say they are the same thing

You can say “xxxxx conflicts with the Manifesto”. Maybe.

Frankly if you’re having to ask how to communicate around the rules, you’re safer just not bringing it up.

Confused at reception of event.

The content is just showing its age.

The Labyrinth pales in comparison to the Pavilion and Scarlet Invasion events. The zerg size required to defeat the new Legendary bosses renders the entire rest of the content in there moot. It’s a waste of time for 60 odd people to open a door and a single veteran skeleton pour out… and the “Foes Remaining” events dont scale enough at all. I havent seen a single champion spawn in those events, and thats where all the rewards are in the new game. The masses of veterans get destroyed utterly due to the zerg size required in case one of the Legendaries spawn.

XP is also a lot slower to gather in there because the zerg runs from event to event. The mobs in between are ignored, and getting left behind them with a group of 7-8 angry Halloween mobs isnt pleasant for any downleveled character…

Really apart from the achievements and the joy of zerging, there’s not much really to the Labyrinth this year. Still love the Clocktower and the Inquisition though! And the story bits are good so far. I’m waiting to see what if anything happens next as the event continues.

(Not going to talk about the new recipes and requirements. I know I’d be banned for 2 weeks no matter how hard I’d try not to.)

Necro or Guard?

Jeeze what did they do to the other classes? o_o

I am gonna roll an alt due to a couple friends picking up the game and wanting me to play with them.

If I was going to run around with a bunch of nooby friends, I’d roll a guardian.

Depending on what classes/builds your friends pick, the Necro might step on their toes via condition cap.

The trait information revamp, condition damage display and new ground targeting setup probably took up most of the resources devoted to the balance part of this patch.

While all that is welcome, the changes are… really underwhelming. At least for me. I dont see anything worth rolling an alt over or trying something new on my main, nevermind affecting the meta in any area of the game.

Simply put, the balance patch has done nothing to increase the time I wish to spend playing GW2.

So.. the labyrinth

That design has been in game since release. You’ve never been able to do any Activities with friends deliberately. If you ever have its been purely coincidental.

I feel its likely the biggest reason none of the activities have really taken off.

Class balance:

Ranger
Sick ‘Em will now apply ‘Revealed” to enemies they target. We want to introduce some counter play to Stealth (players have asked for that for a while), so we thought a pet “catching your scent” might be a cool way to insinuate some anti-stealth into the game.

To help Rangers support allies, we increased the ability ranger pets have to support allies. For instance, the Bear condition removal isn’t strong enough, so we’ll be improving that. Moas and Fern Hound will also be improved.

There will also be # changes to some of the Ranger weapons. (this one some nice lie)

While I get the disgust over the continued terrible state of Ranger weapons… they didnt even technically lie as there was a Greatsword change.

Good for a red-name with some forum cred to endorse this. This prospect is actually looking up.

@Kaleban
I love the game, but I’m not going to be a volunteer moderator or community rep.

Anet has paid employees who should be doing what you describe. If theyre not, that’s a seperate issue.
