I have gained a lot of respect for SoS during our matchups, this being the second. I have lost a lot a respect for Ehmry Bay during this matchup, and the forums warriors are to thank. I know those trolls don’t speak for everyone, but they have pretty much sealed the deal if I every lose my mind and decide I want to transfer out of DB. I couldn’t stand to be in a community with such vocal individuals with so much ego and disrespect.

And another one! Man, this is getting embarrassing…

Oh man, there’s another 1v1 I just won against Rekz! Would have been 1v2 but the other one ran away.

I don’t understand how I keep winning these 1v1 fights against Rekz players. I’m not even really all that good.

Turns out DB’s prime-time is actually SEA, not NA. EU primetime (incidentally when I typically play) is our weakest. And I don’t think any of these three servers is really giving it more than 75% this week anyway, and probably much less with the new content out.

You neglected to quote a single post, as I requested. If you cannot quote a DB player “acting as if it is” skill, then it’s you who has the misperception of skill versus numbers, not us.

I was disinterested in the engi changes until I read this. This is something that I can actually use! I’m a big fan of kits, so turrets and gadgets never really interested me, and that’s what most of this patch was about.

Are you going to ignore the obvious WvW population imbalance, if so then you are in denial, if not then explain how you are being skillful in this act? No offense, but you are missing some context. Someone from Ebay said their BL couldn’t be taken during NA primetime. So some DB guilds decided to take up that challenge. They did it through sheer superiority of force, nobody will deny that. Quote one DB post that claims DB did it through superior skill.

So in summary, an Ebay player says SoS sucks because SoS can lose its entire BL during NA primetime, and that would never happen to Ebay. So specific DB guilds take note of that remark and take over Ebay’s BL during NA primetime, because a #5 server really should be able to take over a #12’s BL on a whim, shouldn’t they? But Ebay doesn’t suck, it’s just that it’s patch day and there’s new content, so Ebay can’t be bothered to defend. And when #5 DB points out that Ebay did in fact lose their BL during NA primetime, DB is not only a bunch of chest-thumpers, but idiots and bad players because they have the numbers to out-zerg the #12 server. Oh and you’re better because you can do more with fewer players (unverified). Do I have all that right?

Look I realize your pride is at stake here, and that you are taking it personally. I feel rather sorry for you, actually, because we’re trying to have fun and for you it’s serious business. Even against JQ and BG, where we got wholloped, we generally managed to be models of good sportsmanship, and still tried to have fun. You’re going to frequently be fighting servers with more coverage than you. Might as well learn to deal with it in a constructive way.

To the rest of Ebay: I know these trolls don’t speak for most of you, so no hard feelings.

This is the first DB post in 10 hours. I personally don’t intend to get in the middle of this lovers’ quarrel. Don’t drag DB down because you guys cannot play nice.

Dazed like all of my skills go on what seems like a 2 second cooldown.

I’ve fought several thieves today and I’m starting to get the hang of it, though I have yet to beat one in the past week. I think the thing that’s hurting me most is that my skills rarely land due to stealth, skill-based mobility (shadow step, evades), CCs (blind or dazed) , or of course dodges. Things tend to go much better when I can use Supply Crate to interrupt and imobilize them (net turret). Crippling them slows them down a bit, but they seem to recover from that quickly. Anyway, my current builds don’t really give me a bounty of tools to CC the thief, and I think that’s my main issue right now.

So my matchup has occasional fight clubs, so I jumped on my solo-roaming-specced engineer (Mask’s build). Not surprisingly a lot of thieves were there too. I lost all of a handful of fights against thieves (no problem against mesmer and warrior). I got a D/P thief down very low, but he kited me long enough to get his initiative back and finish me off. There was this other thief that was able to keep me dazed for half the fight. And boy he was able to continually get behind me so all my skills missed…that was annoying. Is that S/P? He kicked my butt pretty good.

Wait so they are up on a fan site that says “As a note these are unofficial patch notes, just simply a preview!” so that makes them official?

I’d recommend you to stick with the zerg and spam 1 or simply find you a roaming team of 5 competent players because that ratio is horrid. You’ll definitely learn in do time , Engie is and always will be one of those classes you can’t just pick up and play and perform to its full potential lol (prob can say this about all classes except thief)

I’m a kind of an alt-o-holic, plus I get maybe 10 hours per week to play, so I haven’t really spent all that much time fighting non-NPCs. It doesn’t help that I’m on Dragonbrand, which is zergs during its primetime, and a ghost town against enemy zergs outside of primetime. And it doesn’t help that I’m a group support spec but all of my gaming buddies are addicted to LoL right now.

Lately I’ve been seeking out small and solo fights just to see what happens. I usually end up clicking on a waypoint.

Yeah pretty tanky and running protection injection plus some other defensive traits (I’m talking WvW here, I don’t PvP much). I’m more of a small group support build. Even so, I often get stun-locked, and at that point it’s over.

1:05 – I like the dodge out of the stomp! I’ve gotten fairly good at this too, though I have yet to learn which professions have downed skills that should be dodged.\

1:13 – I bet those players were thinking “he’s not coming down here, it’s just one engineer”.

I played Mask’s “old” build before the confusion nerf when confusion was OP, and I was still less than 50% in 1v1s. I am so impressed when I see you guys taking on multiples, but I’m also confused. I just seemed to die much easier with the same build, gear, and what I thought was the same playstyle. But I must be missing some very important things. Are casting animations a big part of your game? Because I know very few and don’t really know which ones must be dodged. Anyway, nice video.

I admit there’s another part of my playstyle that needs work, though. Once I unload I know the right thing to do is be more defensive and kite until I’ve got some skills to work with. But I tend to stay in rather close range so that I’m in position for when blowtorch and prybar are off cooldown. Maybe that’s just something I need to learn through repetition.

I’m easy to kill. I run a build that is good in small and large groups, but not effective solo. And yes all of that group play does means I spend most of my time with a small “mistake” buffer, which won’t work solo.

Am I missing something or is this just Mask’s build but with a very slight change in traits?

Nerfs? Guys engi get one of biggest buff since launch. Best of them is stunbreaker on Super Speed. Do you know what it means? With KR we will have stunbreaker every 10s(!!!) while swap on Toolkit. SD builds and FT builds get Huge up also as our whole bunker possibilites. Shield get rework on melee so we now block all atack instead one, I see only buffs and fixes. Just Elixir R is bit sad.
Only what devs still dont want to do is some usable stability.

They said they want to give us more access to stun breakers. If these notes are not BS, then what they meant is that they want to take away some existing stun breakers that people are using and move them to utilities which see very little use. And when asked why what would be their answer? To increase build diversity. BAH!

If KR gives a stun breaker on TK swap (I’m skeptical), and ANet doesn’t recognize this as an OP bug (unlikely), then I’ll be happy, because I’ve really been digging a kit build I’ve been using lately, and I have no stun-breakers.

just takes practice.. if you’re dying badly you are just not reacting fast enough.. once i got to know my engy thief literally became lowest threat of all classes 1v1.

Makes me think I need to try to get more thieves to try to gank me, just so I can practice.

At one point I was running full soldiers exotics. A full berzerker thief got me for 14k between Mug, CnD, and Backstab. That was shortly before they improved culling, so I wasn’t able to react. And I know Mug has been nerfed since, but it does show that PVT is not the solution to thief burst.

Secondly, I think some people hit the nail on the head that you need to be able to react quickly. So if you’re running from the citadel to bay, you better have your anti-thief abilities ready and waiting just in case.

Thirdly, I mostly encounter D/P thieves and I have a whole bunch of tools in my build to fend them off. But the ones that are persistent, those willing to reset the fight 5 or 6 times, those are the ones that eventually kill me when I inevitably make a mistake. With a thief you are always entering a fight on his terms, not yours. I think that is why engineers are so easily killed by thieves in WvW.

I think my win/loss/draw percentage against solo thieves is 10/30/60. Not very admirable, but most thieves are built specifically for roaming. I’m not. That probably means I shouldn’t be solo roaming, right? Or at least I should expect to lose while doing so. Will I ever learn?

I’d like to see videos of you beating thieves who are trying to gank you open field in WvW. Those videos need to show you being taken by surprise, because that’s the problem. I don’t doubt you can do it, I just want to see how it’s done. We L2P losers need some graphical aids sometimes.

Oh, I forgot to make this post early on. Sophtspoken has been a rather standout troll lately, and even DB wants him to tone it way down. But the only way to do that is to ignore him, so please do. And please don’t associate him with the generic “people from DB”, because he does not represent.

I’m sure the advice above is valid, but it misses the mark. I run a rather tanky build which emphasizes toughness, vitality, and healing power as stats, plus traits that give me defensive bonuses when bad things happen, plus utilities that give me blocks and CCs, and some escapes, plus a bunch of different ways to heal myself. It doesn’t have all that much offense to put pressure on anyone, but pretty much any other profession and build I can survive indefinitely, assuming similar skill.

And guess what: if a berzerker thief (except the very bad ones) wants me dead while I’m solo roaming, and I’m not close to a tower, keep, or friendly players, I’m as good as dead eventually. I can hold off his attack for a while, forcing him to stealth and heal and come back a few times. But once I make one little mistake or the right skill just happens to be on cooldown, I’m done for. It’s what thieves are built for. On some level I’m actually okay with it. At the small scale it just seems unfair because he can win the fight and I cannot. But at the macro level, he is one person on the server and so am I, so it’s not a major impact on the map.

Also I’m kinda worried about this torment thing. Another condition to cleanse, and it could really impact my zerg-breaker build.

I see changes to skills and traits that nobody uses, and the only way to entice people to take those traits and skills is to take away the usefulness of the skills and traits we do use. Interesting way to improve “build diversity”. Meanwhile it seems other professions are getting all kinds of new fun things to play with. Eh, I’m not too optimistic, but maybe some theorycrafters can prove me wrong.

On a personal note, the only skill or trait that I use in my WvW build which has changed is Static Shield, and I’m not sure if it’s a buff or a nerf. Well I guess that means the build is already pretty good.

I never come to the defense of Maguuma, but as I understand it Mag folks don’t put much stock into PPT. So while their strategy may not be winning, I suspect they are trying to maximize their fun.

I think you’re missing something important here. Most of us don’t care anymore. We got those transfers 5 to 6 weeks ago and it’s been DragonWagon this, Wagonbrand that in the forums since then. Most of us don’t even care to defend it anymore because the guilds that transfered are here; they fight with the rest of DB because they are DB. Get over it man. DB is what it is, and if it’s too much for you to handle, there’s still PvE.

Yeah there is a bit of a hunger going on. After facing off against servers with much higher population, a lot of people took the week off and are now returning to a more favorable matchup. Furthermore, those of us who stuck it out actually learned something about persistence and pressure, and so we’re taking that experience to this matchup, I think.

Does TC’s absence have something to do with it? Hard to tell. The TC/FA/DB matchups were always anti-DB, at least on the forums, because of our server transfers. There were many that wanted to express that sentiment in game, so there was a bit of DB targetting going on. Though this forum is evidence that post-transfer anti-DB sentiment is still out there, hopefully it’s not as fierce as it once was, and our opponents accept that DB is what it is several weeks later.

I’m sorry (and please excuse the old tier references), but that’s no excuse for a T3 server to be outmanned in EB three hours after reset against two T2 servers. All that is is people giving up.

I was there. Not the DB commander, nor anybody in TS or map chat, knew that FA was going for Mag’s keep until they had already taken it. True story.

Oh, and why did DB spend 90% of it’s time fighting FA tonight on EB? Because Mag was nowhere to be found.

Do we have to start every matchup thread with talk about bandwagons and transfers? The population and coverage is what it is. Doesn’t even matter whether the new guilds came before or after T2 (those who know the truth know it, and everyone else just trolls).

Can we talk about this matchup? Like how Maguuma was outmanned on EB on reset night. Or how FA took nearly everything except DB’s 1/3rd of EB?

DB has a 4 maps queued right now. I haven’t personally experienced that before…

We learned some new things against JQ and BG last week. Mostly we learned that our server is mostly fairweathers.
