13k heal, sure if you’re running full healing gear and blow all of your blast finishers at once. Such a character is only going to win 1v1s against glass cannons. Now for group fights…okay that’s a pretty neat trick.

Had a couple 1v1s against solo TC thieves on DB BL just now. I won one, and the other ended up taking off after disengaging three separate attempts because I was winning. Maybe I’m getting a little better at this 1v1 stuff. Or maybe my opponents were eating samiches.

Our small group of 2-4 was pretty frustrated. Every time we found a small group and engaged, more and more would come until we were overwhelmed. Got rolled by large TC groups in DB and TC BL’s. Hopefully it will get better later in the week.

Please excuse me for being a noob, but why do so many people care about glory and rank? Such things are not necessarily a reflection of skill but time played, so why does it matter if people are getting more of those fake currencies in sPvP than tPvP? And since I don’t think it does matter, I say we stop worrying about it in this thread.

Back on topic: hotjoin sPvP is currently our best place to work on 1v1 and small group combat skills that translate into WvW. That is precisely why I started playing it in the last couple weeks. So it has value to me, even if it means I’m not learning optimal conquest-mode strategies.

I’ve not read all the replies in this thread because a lot of folks like to write novels, and I’m not interested in reading them.

So I just recently started playing hotjoin PvP. tPvP (even unrated) scares me because I run solo most of the time, I know I’ll be going up against premades, and I like having a chance. I’m not sure what glory farmers actually do, but in my 20 or so hotjoin matches so far, I don’t think I’ve come across any.

I’m curious, how exactly does hotjoin hurt the PvP community? The OP and first few posts didn’t actually seem to answer that question. You seem to be saying that hotjoin doesn’t help players learn to play competitively in conquest mode. Well so what? Some of us don’t want to play competitive PvP. In my case I like the 1v1 and small group fights aspect of hotjoin because that helps my WvW skills, and I like WvW.

Edit: I did read more posts after all. So glory farming is one team zerging the other players for kills, I guess. So I did encounter the enemy team doing this once. We won by over 300 points.

I believe you are implying that the huge fights are the result of bad design, not the lag, which I profer is the inevitable result of having huge fights. Most of the people blaming ANet for the lag seem to want the huge fights without the lag, and that is a virtual impossibility.

It’s simply unrealistic to assume that asking servers to “shed” vital members of their community won’t simply result in the creation of another stacked server coming out on top, as has happened in the past.

That is a very cogent point. It’s also unreasonable to expect ANet to eliminate lag in huge zerg fights because, for the most part, doing so is technically infeasible.

Also, I’d venture to guess that if you removed all guilds from the current T1 servers who have not been there since launch, you wouldn’t be having so much of a lag problem.

I personally believe DB’s normal WvW population doesn’t stand a chance against TC’s normal WvW population. Since our last matchup, when DB was defeated easily, DB lost Agg, while TC has gained RE, some others I don’t remember, and now WvW (where are the vocal Wagonbrand TCers today?). Congrats to TC. Hope you give JQ a run for its money. Nothing against JQ, just the T1 servers are all aching for some matchup variety.

Who is WvW? Where did they come from? How many? What is their primary time-slot? Just trying to figure out when the best roaming times are going to be when facing TC.

ur right there may not be 1 key FIX to the problem but there r alot of small things they can change to make a difference.

1: lowering the cap number in wvw per bl
2: changing the look of particle effects in wvw( and only in wvw)
3: making it so buffs only work in 20 man groups so the numbers spread out more like INDO said in that video/interview/show thing

the list goes on im sure many of u can think of small things they could do. But running away or hiding from the problem isnt the answer. Anet should also let us know where they r on this or if they r even working on it or care

You know, I’m pleasantly surprised by your suggestions. #2 is more of a client-side thing, but yeah those small things could improve the experience to some degree.

I did say “mostly” didn’t I? That also means “not always”. So “sometimes” I get in huge fights (usually reset night), and the result is lag. I do not complain about it because it’s not something that I encounter often, and besides, I don’t think there is a silver bullet solution.

You have said “masking a problem doesn’t fix one”, or something similar, multiple times now. Have you considered the possibility that there is no solution to the lag problem in huge fights? I’m trying to tell you that it’s likely that they can make some improvements, but not enough to make a big difference. If you don’t believe me, and if you are not driven to do the necessary learning to understand why I believe that, no skin off my back.

I know what you’re trying to do here, but it isn’t going to work. I play mostly during EU primetime when nearly all the servers we could play (except T1 servers) also tend to have pretty low population. In other words, I very rarely experience poor gameplay due to load, so I have nothing to complain about. Rest assured, if I was experiencing poor gameplay due to load, I would transfer off DB. I certainly wouldn’t blame ANet because I have a fair understanding of the technical difficulties involved in this kind of system.

I understand that it would cause frustration, but it would solve a lot of problems. Some of you may recall during BWEs ANet was trying to find the sweet spot for performance versus participation. I personally don’t think they found it. Don’t feel entitled to 120 players per server per map just because that’s what you’re used to. Gameplay experience is rather important, and unending lag is not a good experience. There are limitations to what can be achieved through optimization, any tech geek knows that.

I’m on DB and I get into relatively large battles from time to time. It’s only when you get about 100 players (both friendly and enemy) in one big fight that you start to get lag. And as that number goes up, the lag gets progressively worse. It’s a similar problem as rush hour in a popular intersection…all the cars have to slow down.

Man T1 sounds like little fun. I guess there are some people who prefer the blob vs. blob, biggest blob wins gameplay. I know, even DB has its mindless automatons whose idea of strategy is “follow the blue dorito”, so the other tiers aren’t immune either.

There’s so much complaining about lag when it’s clearly a high load issue, not a programming issue. And yet because a T1 server gets outmanned for 3 hours mid-week, there are calls for more external guilds to transfer. And I bet there are some out there hoping to answer the call, just so they can participate in the T1 lagfest.

Maybe ANet should reduce map population by 25 or more players per server per map. That would solve the lag, and encourage guilds to migrate and even out the population because of high queue times. The top servers will have less of a “weak” time slot because the maps can field only so many, and then if a server is dominating, legitimate claims of superior skill can be made.

You missed the point. The symptoms of a poor experience on reset night are due to your high WvW population, doy! You do not encounter those issues in the other matchups.

And don’t give me the “very few” line for Oceanic/Asian/Euro. When DB was in your matchup with BG, you both held DB to around 100 PPT during your so-called “weak” time slots, and DB is #5.

I’ll tell you why I am reluctant to play PvP. Because my ego can’t take the fact that there are a ton of other people out there better than me. How’s that for honesty?

That being said I’ve been playing a little PvP lately so that I don’t get completely owned while roaming in WvW.

This is crazy. Folks complaining about lag because the server is too crowded on reset night. Folks complaining about DCs because these high pop worlds are pushing the WvW servers to and past their limit. Folks bored to tears because they have to sit in a long queue. And folks complaining about having to play the same high ranked servers over and over with no variety.

The signs are all here people! Transfer to lower tiers!

1. There is no reason to believe that merging EU and NA wouldn’t encourage guilds in the old top 6 to stack on the new top 3.

2. If server pride is important to you (it is to me), then I don’t understand the complaining about stacking. You seem to be saying “I’m not going to move my guild off this server, but other guilds should.”

3. Laylyn is actually not talking about forcing anyone to do anything, he is talking about a system that encourages guilds to want to spread and do so voluntarily. Frankly you have to overcome the prestige of being on a top server by making the gameplay in lower “tiers” more fun. Perhaps the best way to do that is to introduce even more lag.

T1 superstacking occurs because there is a T1 in the first place. To a large degree, it’s a chicken and the egg thing.

It’s certainly a theory. Let me ask you this: why does your guild not transfer off? What is so great about being a top 3 server that keeps you around? If it’s the 24/7 huge fights, server balance is not going to correct that because, brace yourself, then no matchups are going to have 24/7 huge fights.

The utter failure of the system is only happening in Tier 1 NA. For Tier 1 EU, Vizunah Square is the old benchmark for that and hasn’t had a problem yet.

I don’t understand…this is probably one of the most even matchups each and every week. Seems like the new system is working just fine. Or do you prefer to play against one or more servers who cannot acheive more than half of your PPT?

I predict this will be a rather heated matchup thread because some folks are just so super awesome and need to make sure everyone knows it. Oh yeah, and PPT matters, and we all know PPT comes from coverage and coverage alone.

Dang I wish I took a screenshot. I was solo-taking a camp on FA BL a couple hours ago, and a non-upleveled FA person saw me fighting the vets, stood there for a few seconds, then ran away. I was ripe for the ganking, but no dice. It’s okay to risk dying folks, it’s not real gold.

The way you describe it it sounds like a good problem to have. I think of all the other professions I’ve played (4 other 80s, 3 others 20-40), each has maybe a few limited playstyles (maybe excepting Eles). I’ve been Engineer since BWE1 and I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface with build variety. My usual starting point is either to find a build I see online and tweak it to my liking, or to find some kinda powerful trait synergies, and see what I can do with it.

You should maybe try running through him next time instead of running around him. If you have that melee assist thing on, just turn that off, it’s not very useful anyways (you just let yourself be body-blocked by enemies).

To be 100% sure I just went back and looked at the raw video (900×600 instead of 640×480) and verified that it is definitely vulnerability that I got.

It seemed to happen a few times more today. And it seems to always be against vets in WvW. A couple times I would slick shoes them and they would eventually knockdown a couple seconds later. It wasn’t particularly laggy, so I have no explanation for the delay. My main concern, of course, is that I would expect SS to do its thing while fighting another player, and that it wouldn’t.

What’s all this trying to create drama on other servers? Let FA work it out! Yeah they called us Wagonbrand for several weeks and tried to guess which one of the new guilds would transfer first, but come on, that’s old news!

If you look closely at the video you can see that the areas of slick applied were jusssstttt shy of his footsteps. I think the last ones closest to him could have been dead animation? My suggestion here would be to keybind the turn around to “x” so that you can simply spin on the spot and lay a puddle of slick around you for melee. Ideally, I prefer to pull them to me and turn around to activate slick shoes so that they are dragged into a kd combo when you walk in circles to beat em with a wrench.

You could be right. I’ll try your turn-around suggestion. Unfortunately I’m a mouse-turner and turn-around doesn’t work so well with that, so its gonna take some time.

In this video (please excuse the quality, my computer cannot record well in 1080p) I used slick shoes hoping to knock down the sentry. He never got knocked down!!! Because he didn’t get knocked down he gave me a single stack of vulnerability, then stunned me.

So, what about my understanding of the mechanics of Slick Shoes is wrong, causing my plan to fail?

I don’t understand how ANet can allow a profession that can last indefinitely against 10 people, but I’m not a game designer so what do I know.
