Just had a great 12-minute fight duel with a [VR] Mag ele on TC BL. Well done! I thought it was a stalemate and you’d disengage, but we stuck it out. I made one major mistake and it was over. I still contend Mag has the best roamers.

RE on TC is Rethisis formerly on Kaineng, I believe. RE on DB is/was Red Essence, formerly part of EMP on JQ.

Now that I know I cannot really chase effectively, I’m satisfied letting the enemy run away…and I’m going to continue being smug about it, including the tips about pointing and laughing.

FYI I have played tanky/get away builds on my engi, whose purpose was to keep people busy chasing me. Nearly impossible to get a kill in that build. I felt smug when I managed to stay alive indefinitely. I guess any level of success is worth celebrating.

Okay thanks all. I’ve made a habit of /wave ’ing when someone runs, just so they know I won that fight. Is there a better emote?

It’s been a fun morning solo roaming in TC BL this morning. I’ve seen more TC solo roamers today than I’ve seen all week! A few of them even stayed to fight after getting below 50% health!

I tend to solo roam in WvW a lot. When I come across another roamer and they start to lose the fight, they’ll run 75% of the time. Can’t blame them, I do the same. But I’m curious what tools I have to catch them. I run 20/20/30/0/0, staff/scepter+torch right now. Utilities are usually Decoy, Blink, and Veil. There’s no swiftness in this build.

As far as I can tell I have three options: 1) Chaos storm can give me swiftness. It can also do a quick daze and a short chill. 2) Blink can get me close once, but it’s usually only enough to prolong the fight a few seconds. 3) I use crippling dissipation in the Domination tree, so I can try to keep up cripple that way, though they can usually outrun my clones.

Are there any other tricks that I’m missing?

The context is either PvP or WvW. If I cast feedback on a player, but then the player moves out of it, do I gain any benefit to going into the feedback sphere myself? What if I position myself so the feedback sphere is between me and the enemy? Difficult for me to test without a willing subject.

Two of the three scepter skills apply damaging conditions. The two torch skills apply burning and confusion respectively. I am curious what you would change.

Tensions must be running high in DB. For simply proposing an alternative tactic, the entire DB TS server got really bent out of shape and proceeded to call me very bad names QQ. Then I got banned from the TS server. Really classy when I’ve never had a mic attached and just listened in to commanders, helping out where needed. If this is the type of communication and treatment DB players are going to get, we need HELP. Maybe I’ll just take the week off and let the guys that think they’re hard get facerolled. I’ll still run my little solo camp/sentry caps, as usual. Gotta get that WXP! LOL!

It’s part of the game, not part of the server. Commanders have it rough, and are subject to critique when things go wrong. It gives some of them complexes, a heighted sense of importance and superiority. The really good commanders will ignore you. On the other hand the really good commanders probably have a much better grasp of good tactics and strategy, and don’t need the “help”.

But don’t kid yourself. Ten to one odds you were being obnoxious, and not just “simply proposing”.

Though it may be more fun to level in WvW vs PvE, I find it’s full of frustration. First off, unless you can find a karma train leveling is painfully slow. Even with the karma train I estimate it’s about 5 times slower! Since you’re going to need to be in a karma train (unless you want to be leveling for many months) you’re going to need to do as much burst as possible in the relative safety of range to get maximum credit. This is all indepenent of profession.

Specific to the engineer, this probably means a power build with ranged combat, i.e. rifle and grenade kit. And since you don’t really start to make an impact with grenades until level 60 (grandmaster trait Grenadier), well let’s just say Good Luck!

Here’s a quick video of just two hours this morning that I made of your typical Dragonbrand players. This is what I had to deal with all week long when I struck gold and actually found a Dragonbrand player or two not zerging. Emotes like /laughing when they couldn’t walk the talk or had numbers advantage, running to guards or behind doors, doing anything to avoid any actual conflict instead of karma grinding.

What am I seeing here? So solo-specced faceroll thief beats group-specced DB players who likely have relatively little dueling experience. I fail to see the awesomeness. At least Waffler has the decency to prove his awesomeness running a solo-specced condi necro.

I never cared much about the downed state for Engi…usually when I’m downed I’m dead, and I haven’t played the other professions in PvP enough to compare. But now I’m starting to understand what folks are talking about. Me an a buddy were on a point and both of us were downed within 10 seconds of each other. A bad guy started to stomp my buddy so I #2’d the enemy. He then proceeded to stomp me instead! Not cool man, not cool!

Eviator, are you a necro? I had a good 1v1 with a rB necro this weekend and just after I eek’d out and downed him, his buddies (non-rB) showed up and ruined it.

My necro is specced for PvE, so I don’t run her in WvW. And if you had a 1v1 with me, even on my solo specced classes, you would not call it a “good 1v1”. :P I’d rate my skill as a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being super awesome. Still I gotsta roam sometimes, and I don’t run.

P.S. Cheers to the guy who PM’d me in game. I’ve friended you so we’ll catch a duel sometime.

I would have engaged, but I was having too much fun trolling two DB d/p perma-stealth thieves ([qT] and [SYNC]) just waiting for me to hop down from the tower to try and gank me. They even ignored other CD roamers who ran by which tells me that they really had a kitten for me. They must have used the Black Powder + Heartseeker combo over 100 times waiting for me to hop down.

Jeez folks say DB solo roamers run, you aren’t kidding. The first half of your video was kills against people not fighting back.

I give up for now. Still no solo roamers from SoS or CD. In the following screenshot once I got the guardian just about downed, the necro showed up. There’s another guy coming down the stairs. I understand the desire to cover the north camp, so I’m not complaining about this fight specifically. Just wish CD and SoS would back up their solo roaming claims with…..wait for it…..solo roamers!

I’ve been solo roaming in CD BL for about 2 hours now, and so far I’ve seen no indication that either CD or SoS has any interest in solo roaming. I beat CD 1v2 (admittedly one was upleveled), only to be interrupted while stomping by 3 SoS. At the south camp the lone SoS built and killed me with a ballista while I was fighting vets. Just now I thought I found a solo SoS “champion”, but no, 10 seconds in his three buddies come around the corner. I don’t want to read another word from you guys that DB doesn’t solo roam…

I’ll provide my answer in an anecdote. I’ve been an engineer since BWE1 and it’s the most fun profession IMO. I know engi quite deeply compared to all other professions. Yet even with a known good roaming build (HGH+409), I only win about 25% of the 1v1s I get into.

Recently I saw an interesting build for mesmer and rolled it. I don’t have a deep understanding of the traits and I couldn’t off the top of my head tell you what any of the weapon skills do. However solo roaming with it, essentially button mashing, I’m winning 80% of my 1v1s.

The moral of the story should be obvious: some professions are better than others at a specific skill level. Based upon my experience, at my skill level engineer is not near the top of the list. Even so, I prefer the engineer, so I guess that says something about me.

I suggest waiting. You’ll find a bunch of DB roamers (myself included) weekdays during EU primetime. It’s our lowest participation time slot, and there’s usually a zerg on only one, maybe two maps.

0.27 seconds for me. It’s not a really good test for gaming purposes, though IMO. You are hovering your mouse to execute a specific reaction to a specific stimulus you know is about to happen. That’s not gaming conditions, at least in my case.

Interestingly I tried it with my eyes closed and reacted about 0.05 faster. I’m also a few hundredths faster with my peripheral vision.

I will say that I have played an Engi condi build and a Mesmer condi build for roaming and duels in WvW, and the mesmer is so much easier. Case in point, I have a very deep understanding of the engi compared to any other profession; I don’t really know what the mesmer weapons skills do. But despite this I have managed to win 80% of my fights with the mesmer, but I’m only about 25% with the engi.

Well as other servers always tell us, we’d be T4 at best without our SEA. There is some truth to that. As someone from JQ said last week, it’s Coverage Wars 2.

I predict this thread will have three main troll topics:

1) DB sucks at open field fights, which is all SoS and CD care about because they can’t compete with DB’s coverage
2) DB always hides in towers and keeps and won’t come out to fight
3) DB always runs from fights unless they outnumber the enemy 2 to 1

Maybe we can all agree to not go on about these topics? Week after week the same posts, it gets boring.

What’s left besides condi damage, direct damage, and survivability? Control, support, versatility, hybrid-ability?

Man I’m glad I decided to pay no attention to this matchup thread this week. A lot of trolling and big wang swinging going on in just the few posts I read. I know the matchup threads have had some of this since the beginning, but it’s starting to get pretty juvenile.

I just tested with 6 blast finishers and only got 14 seconds of stealth. That’s where it maxes out, I guess because I would have gotten 18 seconds.

Shortly after release I did get 15 secs once (13s after the rotation) using a bunch of turrets, mag inversion, and the supply crate. Maybe it’s no longer possible to get that. Of course, everything was then on cooldown, so it was just a novelty.

I mean, at this point, a lot of people have tons of gold due to farming, so I don’t think the prices will drop to follow the lower amount of gold getting in the game for a long time.

The TP prices will eventually drop, though. So will the price of gold to gem conversion. Supply and demand and all that jazz. I don’t know how much the average player has in his bank, but I’m a casual player and I hover around 35 gold, depending upon how often I want to change specs or gear up an alt.

One thing you could do now is hedge. Farm gold like crazy now, then save it for a a month or two, and you’ll have a lot more buying power! Deflation at work.

That’s what I thought too. If you can solo them, you should therefore be quite proud of yourself because you are probably well above average skill.

I finished my participation in the mini-games about 9 hours ago. I decided I would not go for Crystal Breaker because it was already starting to get similar to the “let someone else win” scenarios in the Sanctum Sprint. There’s enough other achievements to get the meta, and I don’t feel like getting an achievement that is normally tough to complete, but can be handed to me through “cooperation”.

I used the tankcat/medicat build with engineer way back before the confusion nerf with PTV. Typical bunker traits, using TK and elixir B and S. I could survive indefinitely against any one character, quite a while against two, and I have had many groups from 5 to 30 chase me for a couple minutes until I got into a tower/keep. I had even taken a few camps, though it was necessary to kill some guards a couple times. In a zerg myself I hardly ever died on the front line. I even used myself as bait to pull out stragglers.

But I stopped running that build because, though I could tag a bunch of people, I got very few bags. And, well, I gots ta have ma bags. I haven’t PTV’d in any other profession, but I do not think it hits “decently” with an engineer. We’re talking auto-attacking for around 300, and the special attacks not much more. That’s my opinion on the matter.

That being said, I still have my PTV gear if someone else comes along and has a better experience. After all it is fun. Sometimes when roaming I would just stand there for ten seconds and let the other roamer take me down to half health before I did anything, just to troll.

Look at last night, from 830-1230 PST we dominated in PPT until the epic golum rush of SOR. I’m not chest thumping, i’m calling BS on your calling out our NA yet again.

If it weren’t for WARD and ACO last night, we’d have had no one to fight on any of the maps, and they just got here.

Hands down the coolest thing I’ve seen in forever is the way DB attacks. It’s like a MF marching band. The DB zerg will charge at the keep, then split into 3 groups and move at you with 3 smaller zergs, falling back and charging forward separately. It’s so fluid and new to us.

If that was intentional, that’s really awesome and I wish I was part of it.

However, there is another intepretation. Group A was a coordinated group on TS following the directions of their leader, Group B was everyone else following a blue triangle, and Group C was a bunch of PUGs with no idea what they’re doing. A little less impressive when explained in these terms
