[Spoilers] Story quality way too low

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Gimli.9461

Okay so I got to the final fight where you go into mordremoth mind or whatever arcane metaphysical thingy magic you thought of to explain away your inability to write stories.

Didn’t beat it, was doing it with a friend and we were doing fine but every time I’d get f’ed by that bug where my glider won’t open. But that’s not the point.

The point is => Do you write this aiming it at 5 year olds? You story is horrible. It’s beyond horrible. Your lore, while rich, within game is non-existant.
Pre-HOT you bragged on twitch how oh watch out for the sylvari conflict (racism, deep issues). Watch out for nightmare court and how they won’t follow mordremoth, and oh boy I expected some extensive story arcs there.

What happens? Oh look, step 1 => Eir dies, Faolain dies. Eir dies why? To give Bram a bow. So god kitten pointless! That removes that Eir-Zojja tension. You could have injured her and still given him the bow while she heals?
Faolain => way worse. Where’s my nightmare court story? Where’s the depth? Where’s Faolain/Caith etc interactions? Where’s other sylvari? How does this affect sylvari as a whole? Do some accept Mordremoth? Some turn to Nightmare? Some turn soundless? Where are small stories?
My biggest fear was I’ll kill mordremoth too soon, and you’ll just declare all sylvari are happy and innocent again. So you don’t have to write /create anything about it. Well looks like that fear’s been realized, unless there’s some bomb after I beat the boss? But even if there is, I’m guessing I won’t get any quality story until LS 3, and even then I’ll be highly skeptical about it.

Most importantly – WHERE ARE THE NPC’s I CAN TALK TO?
You replaced text with Dialogue, but there’s so little of dialogue that I find myself longing for old story ways. I liked old Tyria maps, now I love them. Because there’s just so many npc’s all over with their little day to day stories and you can read it and it’s glorious.

Not only is your story stupid (sorry, but it is), full of gaping holes, and shoddy (oh look Faolain dies, okay, now lets go thru the jungle, oh look Rata Novus lets find their research => oo tension (I’m really upset it’s not a city full of Azura we can talk to btw) => oh look Taimi’s character ‘growth’ (so badly done)? Oh look her golem dead, cry people (kill another thing => JRR Martin much?) Oh look dragons have weakness yay. Very anticlimactic. Oh look lets go rescue logan/zojja. WE gonna bash mordremoth yee! Who cares we don’t know how.

Oh look, we are here. How do we kill it? Oh wait Trahearn is sylvari! Oh wait ‘insert mindnumbing metalomagicalbobbligoodity here noone understands because it makes 0 sense) we think this ’ll work! Lets go try it! Oh look yay it works (except there’s bugs so you don’t kill the thing).

The hell?
I understand you rushed this xpack but seriously, fail. Big fail.

And guess what, I can solve this for you. Introduce LORE system (look at Wildstar lore system). Scatter Journals and pages around not with just 1 sentence in them, bug pages of text. That’s how you get short stories in . That’s how you get that lore in, that depth. You could have told bucket loads of stories about Faolain, her courtiers, Caithe, and god knows who else, just through big kitten stories scattered as journals. No cutscenes needed. Those who hate reading can ignore them. Those who love story and lore will enjoy it immensely and feel there’s some substance to this.

Progression through the jungle to kill the dragon => too fast, zero substance, minimal dialogue. Disappointing.

They want you to spend all your money crafting 1 piece, then salvage it, get 0 globs of dark energy, rinse repeat. By age 80 if you’re lucky (and not dead) you’ll get enough globs to get 1 legendary piece.

Dark Energy - Not from Rings?

Gimli.9461

Okay Anet, one question => how much you think my time is worth?
Why the hell isn’t this salvageable from Rings? Not only that, from what I read if I salvage armour/weapons I am still not guaranteed to get Dark Energy? Are you utterly off your rocker?

I swear to god, you are the only game with 1000 stat sets on their end game armor. So what you are saying is my 700 fractal runs pre-HOT are worth nothing. Your RNG on ascended chest drops is atrocious. I ran fractals 700 times, and I got 2 armor chests and 2 weapon chests. I’ll be lucky to get what, 2 dark energy out of it? I am not going to salvage this. I need this armor.
The only people who have ascended armor they can salvage are people who already have so much of it, they don’t even need legendary gear except to brag.

This just proves to me this game is not worth me sinking so much time into it. You took RNG to the highest level of ‘you think you’ll get a good drop? eat it’. This game it’s NOT REWARDING. I feel rewarded what, once a year? When a precursor drops or ascended chest? Rest of the time I feel like kitten.

I am really tired of this argument that top tier (legendary) stuff should be so hard to make that only 1% have it. Why? SO that the 1% can rub themselves? What will make you money is making a game where if you put time into it, you get rewarded. I put time into it, I got very little. Gah. The 1%s can have their legendary skins if they like.

I’m +1 on the original post, I’m coming to not enjoy this. I’m in fact not spending another penny on this game. The only way they see my money again is if I get that full set of legendary gear precursors without bashing my head at raids for hours. Because I don’t have that leet group of no-lifers to go raiding with. I have 1 person I found who I play with constantly now, that’s about it.

PS: to clarify, certainly I know i’ll have to do raids for hours to get legendary armor. What I mean to say is trying wing 1 say for days and days and months and not succeeding. If it’s reasonably challenging where it can be done with your average ppl group, okay. I have zerker ascended heavy, and sinister ascended medium. I’m not crafting another set just for that stupid stats combo.

I will say that after reading your position, you are not taking into account very specific things…

This is an MMO, not a singleplayer game. MMOs are all about building communities/taking part in adventures together.

Wrong. MMO like anything else is about making money, first and foremost. So if there are paying players out there who don’t give a durp about building communities, they need to be taken into account.

Camera changes - more options request

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gimli.9461

Gimli.9461

Hi, loving camera changes overall, but would like these 2 extra options/issues resolved:

1. (toggle) => current selected target is automatically locked; i’m running into issues where I’ll press my ‘next target’ button to select a target, but it doesn’t get ‘locked’? that is, when I range that target, it doesn’t get hit, until I actually use my lock target button (right mouse button) while having reticule on that target. This is utterly ridiculous because if I actually selected that target, that’s the target I want, thx.
With the issue where stuff I targeted is behind me (eg wanting to run away), I always left click on the ground which drops the target, then execute my ‘charge’ skill. so that’s not an issue.

2. (toggle?) => snap aoe to target => this is all well and good, but can you make it more sensitive to me moving camera after it snapped? There’s plenty of times when I want to move it where I want it, not on target, but close enough to target where snap effect triggers. Right now it just snaps and however much I move my camera it doesn’t budge. I know there’s an option to bind a button to toggle snapping to target off, but seriously I’m running out of buttons here.
So something like: after 0.5 seconds of target snapping, any camera movement should actually freely move ground target. I love that initial snap assist, but if i want to lead the target or move aoe a bit, I should be able to do it by simply moving the camera.
This second one doesn’t even have to be an option but automatic behaviour. I can’t imagine too many people jerking their camera wildly after it snaps (I use ‘Fast with Range Indicator’ aoe mode so maybe that matters somehow)

Taking Grind to a whole new Level

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Gimli.9461

Gimli.9461

You have zero idea what grinding is.

+1

“Grinding is a term used in video gaming to describe the process of engaging in repetitive tasks.”

So basically you are classifying doing many different things as a grind (because precursor/legendary crafting is a collection of doing lots of different things to achieve one goal) => so you may as well say that just playing the game (doing anything in the game) is a grind. Then don’t play games?

Yes collecting that stuff will seem as a grind to you if you just go at it for hours and hours non-stop. That’s not what’s it’s created for. It’s created to let sane players (ie players who don’t play 24/7) to log on, get some progress done toward legendary, and feel rewarded.

Grind would be go collect 100000 skale sacks to get this precursor.
I"m hoping their new gifts for legendary will mean that instead of collecting 250 of each T6 – of which there are 8, i’ll instead be collecting 50 of 40 different things. And each of those things will engage me in a different activity. That turns grind of spot A into game play in spots B,C,D,E,F, where I can actually get 50 without counting each and single one. I play dry top normally for a few hours => what do you know I have the 400 geodes I needed. etc. It’s meant to send you into parts of game you normally haven’t had reason to be in before, and play there for couple hours, as opposed to sticking to 1 area for days to get the quantity of materials desired => which is a grind.

Ascended Gear to be Required for Raids

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Gimli.9461

Gimli.9461

Anet need to realize that if they make content too exclusive, paying people will leave. Because as Wilstar learned to their sorrow, ‘hardcore’ players who play 15h/day don’t pay money. They have too much in-game currency to get anything they want.

If I have to craft 2 sets of heavy ascended gear, I’ll flip. I have my zerker, I’m not opposed to switching stats on it once, but I’ll have to know that will last me a year at least. If Anet’s idea of no gear grind is to build multiple top tier gear sets with different stats, they lost their marbles.

The moment I decide this game needs more time sink than it’s worth, I’m out.

I’m already annoyed how they cheekily removed bunch of content from the game. Events, LS season 1 was a disaster, there’s plenty already I can’t do because it’s simply not in the game. They actually built things and then threw them out? Koodoes. Bring it back, with a 20 dollar tag on it, and I’ll buy it.

Main thing – stop making it so obvious you have no clue what you’re doing with your game, or what your game is like to start with. Stop listening to people too much. Get some direction, nail it down, follow it. Be consistent. At this point I don’t know what to expect from you. If i get ascended with raid stats, you could change raids in a month to require different stats because some people on forums whine about new meta. I honestly don’t want to play the game that changes on a whim.

Historical Achievements (Dev Question)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Gimli.9461

Anet are bonkos because they actually REMOVE content from the game. I hate it, always hated it, will always hate it. I didn’t play for a few months here and there so now all I get is empty southsun, chunks of living story season 1 that I can’t do, etc.

I’m not even talking about events they removed in starter maps when they did levelling revamp. That dev shop looks to me more disorganized by the minute.

Thing is, once you make certain things unachievable in the game anymore, person who likes achieving all there’s to achieve/catching up to people who’s done it => will quit. Because there’s no possible way for them to achieve stuff anymore. My main motivation for playing this game since LS season 1 has been constant fear they’ll remove stuff from it so I have to play it now. I think this is what they were going for with LS season 1, good job anet.

Hi hi,

would it be possible for Anet to let us know in advance if an achievement is going to disappear?
In particular I"m interested in fractal one called “Subject 6 Deep-Sixer”
I’ve been trying to get it and am wondering if I should spend a day with a guildie trying to get Thaumanova fractal on low level, or not worry about it as with fractals doable one by one in HoT I’ll just be able to select Thaumanova one.

It’s been rather hard to get it as high fractals ppl are usually unwilling to try it, and low ones someone in the group messes it up inevitably as they don’t know the mechanic.

So any info on whether this achievement is going to stick around would be appreciated.

Mordrem Invasion Update: 11 September 12:30 PM

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Gimli.9461

Constructive feedback here:

- compile all the best feedback as far as dynamic events go into a set of do’s and dont’s to reference in the future and put it into company shared doc :P I’m pretty sure all this feedback has already been given

- you already know GW2’s greatest strength is collaborative gameplay; any event that makes you compete for tags and causes you to just dash past people without helping/completing events will break that ‘friendliest’ community if repeated over and over

- knowing this – rewards should be based on map achievement, not personal achievement. Or both can be used similar to dry top or silverwastes where group achievement gives you tiers of rewards depending how well the entire map does, and then personal event achievement is also rewarded.

- once you put in map performance based rewards people will actually organize; they’d split into a few groups each with a commander to cover an area and complete events fast, so they respawn fast => higher map completion counter

Unfortunately the way this event is, how i have to tag 20 => the only part of it i do enjoy is when i tag 20 and am free to actually stick around an event and help complete it; I’m glad it’ll be over soon. XD

The Truth About the Berserker Meta

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gimli.9461

Gimli.9461

Good players tend to already know pugs are morons, berserker gear doesn’t magically make someone a good player because all it does is just give you better attributes for dealing damage. There’s really nothing special to it.

This, so much. I don’t know how many times I’ve struggled to try to make random PuG scrubs understand that having someone who knows and has experienced (or failing that, someone who will actually listen to instructions, if they don’t know it), is 10x more important to a fast and successful run than what gear someone is using and what class they are playing as. This goes hand in hand with the whole “we can start now with whatever classes and be done in 30 minutes thing, or we can wait 30 minutes for the perfect composition and end up taking 45 minutes total to finish the content instead of just 30” thing.

This is so true. I have been in pugs that keep failing fractals because they don’t listen. They think they have zerker gear so they don’t have to pay attention anymore. Not true. I’ve seen too many guardians that don’t use their aegis/wall at all to support the team. Yet they spend the time in chat boasting about 25 legendary weapons they have. Really, skill and ability to listen/ask questions is so much more important than what gear you have.

Add good gear and group composition to skill => you end up with those groups that know what they are doing and run things smoothly.

After completing a dungeon....

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gimli.9461

Gimli.9461

Haha yeah no thank you.
Majority of people would start kicking people based on DPS or adding them to block lists etc. DPS it not all even in current state. It is a big big part of dungeons, true, and without high DPS you won’t get the fast run you want. But some dungeons have mechanics that require guardians/blocks/reflects (funny how Lupi DPS would all belong to reflector on successful reflect) and any dps would be increased by someone putting up a fire field even if they themselves don’t dish out much dps.

What would be neat if you could see average dps of the group as kitten per second or whatever. That way groups could see a metric on how they are improving. But really, that is already possible to just see by how fast you down the boss, so it’s not needed.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gimli.9461

Gimli.9461

Waito, who’s X? I don’t get it.

What you have to realize is there’s a line between very offensive to few, because they overreact, and truly offensive to many due to commonly offensive words used in the name. For everyone that line is in a different location, and some people really over react way too much.

As long as a name is not directly offensive, but only expresses an offensive opinion, I don’t see grounds for name ban, because everyone’s entitled to their own opinion.

When religion comes in, I find that religious people are a bit too convinced that they are right purely because they are religious. I’ve seen map chat arguments go out of proportion simply on the grounds of ‘I am christian, you are not, therefore I’m going to assume you are a bad person’.

If I were you , instead of getting offended by a name, just ignore it. You taking it too personally.

How I’m sick of people ripping on casuals. Because a person has a job and can only play 1-3h a day, doesn’t mean they should be disregarded. They are the ones who pay real money to Anet, so if you’re hoping they are going to cater to 5% who stick to well organized groups, never pug, and rip through content, have thousands of gold and never buy gems with money, think again. I am hoping raids will be challenging and fun, but not undoable.

And also if you find the game lacking in interesting content, stop using Dulfy. Figure things out from scratch for yourself. People whine too much about the game being easy, but that is not true. There’s plenty hard stuff in fractals and even some dungeons, just get a pug, hop on a class you don’t main, and enjoy.

‘most people’ will not have legendary armor, just as ‘most people’ do not have legendary weapons; people who keep whining how ‘everyone’ has legendary weapons have a group of people they constantly play with each of which have a legendary weapon; believe me this isn’t ‘most’ people.

just turn down details on other ppl’s armor and turn down number of char models displayed to lowest, and you’ll stop seeing most people altogether. Turn off name plates too. it’s great. you can be in a zerg and only see 10 people around and if you turn off npc nameplates too you can’t even know half the time if they are real ppl or npc’s :P

Instanced Raids Confirmed [merged]

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Gimli.9461

Gimli.9461

There’ll always be a number of people claiming existing content is easy, which is not true. Some of it yes, some of it is still challenging. You have to define what challenging is, really. Hammer fractal is challenging, for a pug. I still go into lfg groups that fail it so I rage quit because no matter how many times I explain how to do it, it doesn’t happen.

Other groups I join are steady groups of friends who race through the fractal => they will say it’s easy.
When you say something is easy or challenging you have to keep in mind which group of people you are talking about.

With raids, they can’t make them so challenging that only 1% of people complete them => only the steady groups. Then the rest of the people will simply not do the raids at all, because they don’t have time to dedicate to them or don’t have people to constantly practice them with.

So if raids are so utterly challenging that they can’t be completed by a half -pug, and if rewards are RNGed so I will see 1 reward in a year => yeah that’ll ruin the game for me and I’ll quit, like I quit other mmo’s because of raiding. 6h of standing around trying the boss and at the end no guaranteed reward for months? No thx.

There’s a balance Anet have to strike between challenging and too challenging. They are trying for engaging combat that feels risky and challenging and yet it mustn’t be impossible to do, I guess we’ll see how it will be.

Constant claims however that everything current is easy I’m sick of. No one does Arah p4 because it’s challenging. All Arah paths are in fact challenging. Some people will tell you it’s easy and the only reason they don’t do it is that it takes a long time. True. But taking X amount of time is part of definition of challenge for some.

It’s not a trivial topic and too many people trivialize it. Everything becomes easy after you’ve done it a 100 times. THat doesn’t mean it has to be made so hard that only you can do it. That means it’s time to move on to the next challenge, and if Anet pushes out raids regularly, there shouldn’t be a problem.

Dude, what is up today, every post I read is so funny I can’t stop laughing and crying from hilarity. Oh man wipes eyes I personally thought it had a bit of electrical crackle to it, but after a few hours of gameplay it did sound sometimes as someone sh.tting their pants, but only if you were tired and so inclined :P XD

how to use mastery points?

The mastery points system is completely bonkos right now. I was also very confused as to how to spend them.
My understanding was, each time i’ll level up I’ll get a mastery point, and then I’ll spend them. So for instance Gliding lvl 1 would cost say 5 points to unlock, level 2 10, lvl 3 20 etc. Something of the sort – like WvW system.

But the way it is yeah you have to get the bar to fill, I was under the impression I use mastery points to unlock the tier to fill with XP, but ppl here say I unlock the tier I already filled with XP… whatever, it’s weird.

What is this nonsense with health doubled?
Ye great now when I do Teq it’s either hair line win, or hair line loss. It’d be fun except for:

- Crit spot needs to be LARGER. I stand on it, and if I turn slightly and start my hundred blades, I suddenly realize I’m doing 0 dmg because I’m slightly turned to the left.
- For ppl to be able to stand in crit spot they need to dodge when teq rears to avoid his slamdown=instant down. In general with difficult content => before you double health, make it easier/more obvious for players to understand the mechanics and animations. Right now it’s just a big mess and trying to teach 100+ ppl when to dodge isn’t fun/possible
- I start LAGGING on the last burn. I suspect it’s due to new condi caps. So maybe before you double health which by itself sounds like stupid quick fix to mollify ppl QQing (will you already ignore all the whiners for once?), maybe fix the lag first? I can’t hit Teq properly because of this lag. I hit my skill, nothing happens, I hit it again, in 5 sec it goes through and cancels itself because I hit the thing twice.

Anyway, not having much fun here due to the above issues
And on a slightly related note, I’m frankly sick of all the QQ when changes come, changes are often not liked by tons of people, those should be ignored and never should cause ‘quick band aid fixes’. I saw ppl in guild chat QQing 5 min after patch went live how new UI is confusing, because they were too lazy/stupid to try and click things first. Enuf said.

.. and everyone thinks they are a professional ‘balancer’ now lol
Very funny to read some of the suggestions in this thread that go ’Here’s a simple formula!’

My 2c:

people are overreacting as usual, very unreasonably so the the hero points preset, and also unreasonably so to things dying faster

What you have to remember is that condi stack changes means that every condi player out there now deals the damage they actually output. As result, obviously world bosses will die faster.

Now Anet did say burning is too strong, but that does not follow from the fact that ‘omg this mob dies too fast’. It follows from the fact that taken as it is now, it lets say class A to outdamage class B by A LOT using burns. (This of course isn’t a comprehensive definition by far, but you see my point)

So balancing will probably touch scaling. Ie if every player now both zerk and condi outputs max damage they can, we then must not simply DOUBLE health of every mob (stupid) but scale it differently depending on number of players around.

As for max health pools, that’s just a kittenty road to go down and I’d hate to see them increase. As a warrior I did see more damage as result of some obvious trait changes, but not as much (I’m zerker). I do love the burns on my bow, and need a condi bow now. Other than that things are grand – zerker stayed zerker.

So the only thing really is they’ll tone down things that need to be toned down but I highly doubt by much. It’s not merely a question of how much damage burning deals, but how much of it a given class can stack up.

And isn’t there a boon or effect called resistance coming up? That + maybe some changes around condi cleanse could also be what we see.

Do dungeons, fractals, try out pvp => pvp = good way to get orange weapons/armor; read up dungeon guides on gw2dungeons website for explorable paths strategies; in a few runs you’ll learn the paths + it’s a good way to get gold; do silverwastes/dry top/living story season 2 for ascended gear. join a guild do guild missions ; get started on crafting ascended gear if you want
