Behold, eles, we might get WARHORN!

The issue with the warhorn-as-AoE-damage idea IMO is that we already HAVE a ton of ways to do AoE damage, both ranged (Staff) and PbAoE (Dagger) and utilities (Glyph of Storms, Ice Bow, FGS.)

The Elite spec is supposed to give the class a play style that it previously did not have access to.

The things that Ele lacked were burst and condi specs. However, we only lack viable burst because Scepter is so clunky, and because Fresh Air has been nerfed (BttH is GM, Ferocious Winds is bugged, other classes’ damage output in general is jacked up, reducing survivability.) Once (if?) those issues are fixed, we will have a viable burst build. Condi specs are already becoming better thanks to the burning changes, and if anything will probably be nerfed, unfortunately.

Our group support abilities are great, though obviously not as amazing as the Guardian’s. We can offer AoE boons, healing and condition removal, often built into our weapon skills. The only thing we really can’t offer is group aegis or group stability (save for Rock Solid, which is IMO kinda crappy for a Master trait.)

So I’m really having a hard time picturing what Tempest is supposed to offer us. The only thing I can think of is AoE CC immunity support. Warhorn I guess makes sense in that role, along with the lore support it has, but I was still hoping for a main hand weapon, since Focus is just so darn good.

I’m also bummed because I was really hoping for main hand sword, because of all the cool skins. Warhorns just look super lame IMO, besides Howler. Plus, I’m annoyed that I’ll now have to level up Huntsman in addition to Tailor, Artificer and Weaponsmith to get all my Ascended weapons, though other classes have been in this situation for a while now (Guardian, Mesmer.)

Regardless, I’m choosing to keep my expectations super low.

How do you like the new changes to Burning?

I like that now skills like Flamewall and Fire Shield are actually punishing to players who stand in the wall/continue hitting me with the shield up. It is also more important than ever to actually cleanse the burning from skills like Drake’s Breath instead of tanking it. So I think it actually helps promote skilled play. I’ve been having a lot of fun with burning over the past week.

That said, I do believe nerfs are incoming. I really hope they don’t over-nerf burning though, as it’s a significant portion of our DPS.

Also, the trait definitely works when blasting Ice fields. I noticed the person next to me gained a longer duration Frost Aura than I did when I blasted an Ice field under us both. It also works when gaining a Fire Aura by leaping through a Fire field.

That doesn’t grant you shocking aura, it’s a daze on your hit. You can only get Shocking Aura from the dagger air mainhand, the Tempest Defense trait in Air magic and the Arcane Resurrection trait in Arcana. These are the combo effects granted from Lightning Fields:
Blast – Area Swiftness
Leap – Dazing Strike
Projectile -Vulnerability
Whirl – Brutal Bolts

My mistake! Shows you how often I use LH :P Thanks!

Obviously you’ll get biased responses here, but for me no other class can compare. Playing any other class after playing Ele just feels so…boring. It just feels so much more rewarding killing someone as an Ele than as a heavily-armored class or as a Thief/Mesmer (especially in the current “meta.”) The flexibility you have at all times is also a huge plus.

Would also appreciate confirmation on bug 3 (Lightning Rod and Unsteady Ground); they seem to be working fine for me.

I can confirm that it is caused because the target initiated a Dodge Roll.
It’s like if the Lightning Rod proc was doing it before the interrupt.

It does the same with Magnetic Shield when pulling a blocking Engineer, Warrior or Sheltering Guardian. It reads “Interrupted” then Lightning Rod is “Blocked”.

Thanks, modified OP to reflect this.

I don’t have an ele, but this is coming from asking two of my guildmates and another friend to confirm this for me.

Take all your gear off, and if you are in fire spec, you should have a base of 1150 outside of fire attunement, and 1300 in fire attunement.

Swap fire spec for something else and you’ll have 1000 base like normal.

I tried this, and you’re absolutely right. Will add, thank you.

Elementalists should have the best access to burn, bar none. I mean, come on.

That said, IMO Ele burns are in a good place right now. To stack them to ridiculous numbers requires people to stand in Flamewall/cross Ring of Fire constantly. There is now also a bigger penalty for not cleansing Drake’s Breath immediately (rather than facetanking it and cleaning it later.) Fire Aura is actually mildly threatening now. Dragon’s Tooth has an obvious windup. And Signet of Fire has a cast time.

There is counterplay to Ele burns, and they should NOT be nerfed.

I think you’re all getting played pretty hard. You’ve all suddenly forgotten the data mined skills that clearly indicate either a sword or axe or at the very least a mainhand weapon for sure. And there’s no such thing as mainhand warhorn, that’s just silly and they’re not adding new weapons to the game (thematically they wouldn’t add a weapon that is exclusively offhand to mainhand just like the refuse to add a weapon that is exclusively water (spear) to land.)

Obviously an expansion is adding more then ONE new weapon skin per weapon. So they data mine a new warhorn skin and suddenly you all just forget that skills were already data mined.

That was a while ago, and most of those skills were current dagger skills. It’s possible that you’re right (I certainly hope so!) but I feel that the in-game warhorn skin, trend with the other elite spec in-game weapons, and process of elimination all support the idea that warhorn indeed is our elite spec weapon, and that the sword skills were scrapped. At least for the moment.

Been having fun with a Settler’s/Undead/S/F F/E/W signet condi build in hotjoins.

http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-o3d;2B2FY0B5gNkY0;9;4012;0058037036;4T73;3jwmAjwmA9q

(Keep in mind the numbers haven’t been updated on this website.)

My trait and equipment choices may be sub-optimal; still playing around with those.
In particular, I only took Earth’s Embrace and Soothing Disruption because I suck at responding to thief/mesmer stealth bursts, but if you’re good you can take Serrated Stones and Cleansing Wave. I also hate that Geomancer’s Alacrity competes with Strength of Stone.

Sure we only really have burn, bleed and poison (Doom) but between Signet of Fire and Burning Precision and our plethora of minor cover conditions (cripple/immobilize/blind/chill/vuln) you can pretty much always maintain at least a couple stacks of burning (which still hits like a truck) and a few stacks of bleeding.

Good condi removal spread out over multiple attunements (Phoenix, Water Trident, Magentic Wave, Cleansing Water), a bit of CC to delay cleanses/heals, great mobility with FGS and a huge burn on FGS 2. Good blind spam with Blinding Ashes, Earth 3 and Air 2, despite low precision. Swirling Winds and OF for solid defense. And decent healing power to boot.

Try it before you hate on it! It may not be amazingly meta/efficient, but it definitely has potential. Just make sure you make good use of Flamewall; if you can kite your foe into it or keep them CC’d in it, the burn stacks pile up FAST. Pretty easy to do actually if you’re fighting on point. And if they run off point, well, all the better.

There are 6 weapons with “ascended” prefix in that datamine and they all are connected to elite specs:

Ascended Longbow -> Dragonhunter
Ascended Shield -> Chronomancer
Ascended Greatsword -> Reaper
Ascended Warhorn -> ???
Ascended Staff -> Druid
Ascended Hammer -> Engineer spec

So most probably, we will have another 3 elite specs released soon and those specs will be a druid, an engineer spec and some spec with a warhorn. That can be a thief, a revenanat or an ele (warrior already has warhorn skills). Out of those, only an ele had datamined sword (not confirmed) so I would put my money on a thief spec.

My understanding is that the only thing we really know is each class will get access to a weapon they can’t currently use. If that’s the case, Ele could get shield too, for all we know. (Yes, I’m trying to remain hopeful that it’s not warhorn.)

hope its not warhorn… sword seems more likely (as stated in a few posts above)
and it likely wont be a shield as mesmers are getting one and i doubt anet will use a weapon twice for this expansion

Anet has said elite specs will give each class a weapon it hasn’t used before, but has not said they won’t be giving the same new weapon to more than one class. So it’s entirely possible that Revenants will also get shield, and Thieves will also get staff. In fact, if you look at the in-game model of the new shield, it looks Glint-related, and we already know Glint will be the elite specialization for Revenant. Similarly, the in-game model of the new staff looks like the staff the thief is holding in the new artwork that was datamined.

I think it’s pretty obvious we’ll get warhorn, as much as I hate that

1) Lightning Rod: When a foe attempts to dodge roll across Unsteady Ground (Earth Staff skill 4) and is disabled by Unsteady Ground, this trait’s lightning strike proc misses.

2) Lightning Rod: When using Conjure Earth Shield skills 3 or 4 (Magnetic Surge or Magnetic Shield), this trait’s lightning strike procs consume an additional Conjure weapon charge per foe disabled.

3) Lightning Rod: When using Conjure Earth Shield skills 3 or 4 (Magnetic Surge or Magnetic Shield), this trait’s lightning strike procs will be blocked if you disable a foe who is blocking, despite interrupting the block.

4) Rock Barrier (Earth Scepter skill 2) and Signet of Earth passive effect: these toughness bonuses do not work with Strength of Stone or with the 6-rune bonus of Rune of the Undead.

5) When Signet of Restoration is equipped with the Conjurer trait picked, the tooltip shows that the signet grants the fire aura as if you used the old Fire’s Embrace trait. No aura is actually procced.

6) Quickness will result in the projectile block from Swirling Winds also speeding up, resulting in only 4 seconds of block rather than 6 seconds (the animation also speeds up.) This may or may not also be the case for Slow (longer block.)

7) Soothing Power: Only increases the effectiveness of Soothing Mist by 100% (tooltip says 200%.)

8) Cleansing Water: Does not proc on the regen granted by the 4- and 6-rune effects of Rune of Dwayna.

9) (Anomaly?) When Soothing Disruption is equipped, Ether Renewal only grants the associated boons at the end of its channel, or when cancelled early. (All other non-elite cantrips grant the boons upon cast, but they ARE instant, so not sure if this is intended or not.)

10) Trait icons for Soothing Disruption and Cleansing Water appear to be the same.

11) If Aeromancer’s Training is equipped and Ride the Lightning is used, you don’t get the full precision bonus (RtL seems to knock you out of Air Attunement; this is only resolved after swapping Attunements and back into Air.) This bug seems to affect Signet of Fire too, when Aeromancer’s Training is equipped.

12) Lightning Flash no longer works in some places where it previously used to work; for example, some stairs in WvW.

13) Fire Shield (focus Fire skill 5) does not reduce condition duration, despite the tooltip saying so.

14) Superior Rune of Radiance does not increase the duration of the fire aura from Sunspot. The tooltips on both of them do not update with the rune set equipped.

15) Conjure Earth Shield’s extra toughness and vitality do not count toward the bonus from Strength of Stone or Rune of the Undead for the toughness, or Rune of the Scavenger for vitality.

16) If 2 eles that are fighting each other both have Lightning Rod equipped, and one gets disabled and uses their Shocking Aura, and the other ele also has their Shocking Aura up, when the other ele attacks the still disabled ele, Lightning Rod will proc 10+ times on both eles, being able to do MASSIVE damage to each other. See images and video below; 3:58 mark shows bug reproduced.

17) Boil (Trident Fire skill 2) cannot be used against structures, like Inquest turrets etc. or event items than need to be destroyed (e.g. reactors in those Bloodtide Coast NW). The skill just does not execute.

18) Chaos armor gained by leaping across a chaos field is not shared by Powerful Aura, and is not affected by Zephyr’s Boon or Elemental Shielding. (Not sure if chaos armor counts as an aura; may be intentional. However, it IS affected by Rune of Radiance, so this might indeed be a bug.)

19) Power Overwhelming seems to be changing the duration of burns on the tooltips for line-burning fields and on Conjure Flame Axe’s skills (Burning Retreat, Burning Speed, and skills 3-5 on Conjure Flame Axe.) I don’t think it’s changing the actual applied duration, but this has yet to be verified.

20) Arcane Brilliance centers the Blast finisher on the opponent rather than the Ele. In order to get it to function correctly you have to have no target.

21) Churning Earth, when cast in a Fire field, displays “Might” the moment it starts channeling, but gives Might only at the end of the channel. In addition, the skill’s animation goes on even if the skill is interrupted.

22) Soothing Mist’s reapplication while in Water Attunement delays the ticks. As a result, the regeneration effect does not apply consistently every seconds; actually, it procs about two times every 3 or 4 seconds (tested using the improved Soothing Mist.)

23) Geyser: this skill’s AoE radius seems to be its old, pre-baseline-Blasting Staff radius. (This may be a visual bug only; would like confirmation please.)

24) Glyph of Elementals: the audio is completely wrong for the Ice Elemental NPC’s ice lance skill – it plays what sounds like the Frostbrood Norn death audio.

Don't blanket nerf condi's

I think many players are pointing out that it’s not so much the conditions themselves that are OP, but some of the skills that apply conditions were mis-tuned. Especially burning conditions.

This. Some classes can stack ridiculous amounts of Burning, for instance (Guardian) but the condition itself isn’t the problem.

DON’T knee-jerk nerf the conditions; adjust the skills that apply those conditions instead. Burning is SUPPOSED to deal high condition damage; you’re just not supposed to easily maintain a gazillion stacks of it.

Hi guys,

Been running with this and it’s been crazy fun in hotjoins. I wonder if it’s viable in more than just hotjoins.

Scepter/Focus.
Settler’s ammy, Undead Runes, Doom and Bursting sigils.
Signets of Restoration, Fire, Earth and Air.
FGS.

Fire: Burning Precision, Power Overwhelming, Blinding Ashes
Earth: Earth’s Embrace, Strength of Stone, Written in Stone
Water: Soothing Ice, Soothing Disruption, Cleansing Water

-Need to use Flamewall smartly (kite opponents into it, chill/daze/immob/cripple them in it, use Hurl through it, etc.)
-FGS 2 has a crazy burn now
-OK condi removal spread out over multiple attunements (phoenix, water 3, earth 4)
-I switched out Serrated Stones for Earth’s Embrace and Cleansing Wave for Soothing Disruption for the auto-Armor of Earth because of the crazy steal/lockdown bursts from Thief/Mesmers. Seems like a waste of trait slots, but it helps me survive…could use suggestions here. I also hate that Burning Fire now competes with Burning Precision…previously I’d take both auto-cantrip traits plus Burning Precision. However, I do have Cleaning Water now for condi removal…does anyone know if Cleansing Water procs on Soothing Ice????

Mesmers and thieves pulling off insane bursts from stealth, mesmers stacking insane amounts of stealth, medi guards pulling off crazy bursts with huge burns, condis in general…

Glad Anet has its fingers on the meta’s pulse. Hoping for quick and frequent balance passes.

If we are indeed getting warhorn, we’d better also get a significant F skill change like Contiuum Shift or the Reaper’s revamped Shroud. The “having more skills” thing is just an excuse because our skills are individually weaker and have long cool downs.

Still hoping it’s not warhorn though, unlikely as that may be :’(

You think that’s bad?

If the datamine is to be believed, Tempest is getting a friggin’ WARHORN.

Great job, Anet.

Glad to hear it’s not gloom-and-doom (yet)! Looking forward to testing things out for myself.

I keep reading about how Thieves, Mesmers and medi Guardians got their bursts seriously buffed.

Can anyone report how the patch has affected Ele burst?

I’ve been running a Settler’s signet condi build in hotjoin for the past few months, and it’s surprisingly viable, if not optimal. Don’t know about how it holds up now after the patch though.

Here’s my reasoning for why I believe we are indeed getting warhorn…as much as I LOATHE the idea:

1. http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3aug92/datamining_upcoming_features_from_the_june_22/ that_shaman datamined several new “Ascended” weapons: longbow, greatsword, shield, warhorn, and hammer.

2. The first three correspond to the weapons confirmed to belong to the three revealed elite specs: Dragonhunter, Reaper and Chronomancer. In addition, although I haven’t confirmed this myself, their in-game skins look exactly like the skins portrayed in the artwork for those three specs.

3. From the HoT trailer, we know Engineer will get hammer, and Ranger will get staff.

4. This leaves Thief, Warrior, Revenant and Elementalist.

5. From the same link, that_shaman has datamined a picture of a Thief specialization that shows a Thief holding what apepars to be a (melee?) staff. This is weird because Ranger is already getting a staff. It could be another weapon that happens to have a long stock/barrel (rifle?). At any rate, it does NOT look like a warhorn.

6. Warrior can already use warhorns.

7. We have next to no information about the Revenant’s elite spec.

8. From ronpierce’s picture above, the new warhorn has an air/wind motif.

9. By process of elimination, Tempest gets warhorn.

Thief has a new artwork with a melee staff, the leaked weapon is a melee staff, and the leaked shield seems to be Glint-theme, and Glint will probably be Revenant’s elite spec.

That being said, the warhorn’s skin fits very well with ele’s leaked artwork.

Do you have a picture of the warhorn? I’m at work and can’t use chat codes :p

Thank you.

D’: Looks like we’re getting warhorn…kitten .

EDIT: So, if this is true, it means that in order to be able to craft each Ascended weapon, Elementalists will have to max out Artificer, Weaponsmith, AND Huntsman….in addition to Tailor for armor.

that_shaman also datamined a picture of a Thief with what looks like a Staff, so I doubt that thief will get a warhorn. Though it would also be weird for two elite specs to get the same new weapon (Ranger and Thief) so I really don’t know.

If warrior didn’t already have warhorn, I would’ve said the warhorn would be the new warrior spec. that_shaman datamined a placeholder picture for a specialization called “Berserker.” This would fit in well with the warrior, and with the RL theme of Viking berserkers using warhorns. But, again, warrior already has warhorn, so NOPE. Which leaves the Ele.

I really hope Ele doesn’t get warhorn. That would be incredibly lame. I mean, I never had high expectations about Tempest’s mechanics/playstyle to begin with, but I at least expected it to have a cool weapon like a sword.

We really should make a thread, either here or in the Bugs or PvP forum (the latter two are most likely to be read by the devs) compiling the bugs from this patch, and our feedback.

I really hope that this is just an oversight. I was counting on the 3s CD to make Fire worth speccing into…

Also, is the CD STILL global? What gives, Anet?!

EDIT: Also saw they nerfed Burning Precision by upping its CD to 5 sec (from 2 sec.) It’s like they don’t want me to use Fire at all.

When I think Tempest, the word I think of is “unstoppable.”

So I hope Tempest will be hard to lock down, whether through cripple/chill/immobilize or through conventional CC.

So, we all know the meta will be changing drastically starting tomorrow.

While I hope I’m not alone in being excited to see all the new possibilities, there will undoubtedly be builds and classes that will absolutely dominate, and others that will absolutely be dominated, and maybe forced out of the meta entirely, irrespective of individual player skill.

My point is, I hope that the devs in charge of balance keep a watchful eye over the meta and step in to nerf OP builds/buff terribad builds in a timely manner. It would be a shame to be stuck with a toxic meta for another 4-6 months.
