I’m a bit nervous in PVP but I quite like that feeling. But my problem is that I don’t really like killing people. I’m guessing PVPers must get a buzz from that but I all I feel is a mixture of relief and guilt. Sorry, I want to say, but it was me or you, mate, hope you’re not mad.

Gear checks do help with difficulty though. It works like this. They make something nearly impossible to do. Then they gradually improve your gear. When you do it it will be due to skill though. Why? Because you did it at the earliest possible moment. The gear made it perfectly tailored to you. Yes it will make it easier afterwards but that’s so others can get their moment too.

Yeah, lets talk about the rest of it for a change! I love the look of the new enemies. I love the prospect of defending LA. I’m very excited about the weekend events. The new dungeon looks amazing. What I love is that you won’t be stuck on the same wing all the time. People might reroll their luck if they get a particularly difficult or time consuming combination but that’s till better than running AC 1 over and over again. The other thing is that it’s just one place and not 8 places. The community will be focussed. It should be pretty easy to get a group. I’m hoping it will have the feeling you get from doing a raid in WoW when you knew all the other guilds were doing the same fights as you. One of the reasons festivals feel special is you feel everyone is experiencing the same thing. It’s the same thing with a central dungeon hub. Oh and I like this questline to weaken the karka shells. Sounds fun. But what has me most excited is the very fact that they are doing these monthly content bumps. Can they keep doing this indefinately? Lost shores – Xmas – SOMETHING – valentines – SOMTHING – Easter – SOMETHING…. that would just be amazing.

80 levels of vertical progression then told to go collect skins is a harder transition to make than 80 levels of vertical progression (solo questing) and then being told to go and do gear progression in a dungeon. Hence the problem. I’m not saying the transition is impossible but I’m pretty sure lots of people are failing at it. I think Arenanet has waited to see the data from the game before coming up with a rewards plan. They waited to see what people were doing and what they were asking for. They built a game though that creates a progressive mind set. 80 levels. It’s not surprising that one of things the data is showing is a need for some kind of post 80 gear progression, something other than skins and titles. I think this is going to be a very mild form of gear progression and I’m happy with it. I like gear progression except when it’s too much. This doesn’t seem too much, it seems just right.

What happened to the anti griefing policy?

I don’t have problem with people griefing in WvW JPs. Its meant to be that way. But I do think they shouldn’t allow siege simply because it reduces all the cool fights you can have in there to simple tactics of siege. I mean why chase people helter skelter across a jumping puzzle where your jumping speed and skill might have a factor in your survival or whether you catch them when you can just nuke them from range? Jumping puzzle fights should have jumping in them!

They are not rifles, rifles don’t fire nets or shoot you off the ground. They are not shotguns either. They are a two handed engineered weapon that has never existed in any shape or form in reality which has been labelled, for want of a better name, rifle. It shares a model with the warrior because that’s what happens in MMOs. All these arguments are absurd. Just say you don’t like the animation, don’t justify it, it won’t work. I do like it, I think it fits with the overall feel of the profession. I don’t care if it’s not realistic. Neither is firing nets or using a rifle to fire you across the room. And I’m no expert on animation but I think the animation from shoulder firing to leaping will look stupid or will slow down the ability.

In WoW getting a full new tier takes ages. I mean it can take months of daily grind. Then its the agonising RNG for those best in slot pieces. In GW2 can buy full exotics the very day you turn 80. You can have them waiting for you in the bank. Before you guys worry too much just consider how long it might take to get this new gear. I seriously doubt it will be anything more than a fraction of what it takes in WoW. That’s not gear treadmill guys. Raising levels of tier by itself does not create a treadmill it’s just the same as when you level up. It’s the grind that goes with it that creates the sense of a treadmill.

I was very excited when I heard about this new tier. I always hoped skins, titles etc would be enough of an incentive for me but it has proved not to be the case. The new dungeon sounds more like a raid than a dungeon too which I love. I’ve been feeling for a while that there just isn’t any direction for me at 80. Nothing to aim for. I would have prefered something a bit more group orientated such as a Guild Hall to work for in some way, but I will take a new tier of gear as well. The fact that there is just this one really hard dungeon giving the best gear is something I really like. Why? Because it focuses things, all your friends will want to run it and not be spread out over 8 different skin grinds. Well done, Arenanet, in my opinion.

I hate all these dollhouse suggestions, I wouldn’t enjoy that kind of housing at all personally.

Loving the Endgame, Anyone Else?

Grumwulf.9602

I’m a bit disappointed with the endgame. But I think it’s just a rewards issue. I think if the rewards were more interesting it would be better. I don’t mean higher stats. I mean things like treasure maps, polymock pieces, parts of a dance manual that teaches a new dance, a GW2 version of the hall of monuments, guild housing and player housing, more varied legendary skins, zaishen quests to get you to visit old places, more titles for really hard stuff like brutal dungeons and JPs. Also these monthly content updates are looking like they might be good – we’ll see – and good new content beats repeatable old content in a lot of ways. But I would like to see something like an overarching epic purpose to the game. But I don’t know how they can add this. In WoW raids framed everything you did, no matter what: it was all so you could help the guild kill the final boss of the final raid. Zhaitan died too quick, too easy. Nothing epic to work for now.

Or rather random, but still stuff you can wear.

Engineers use gadgety, invented things, weapons with all sorts of swiss-army style tricks to them. A standard rifle would be boring, but a steam powered nail gun would be amazing, even a railgun type sniper affair. As long as it has an invented, crazy feel to it.

LFM, level 80 only

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Grumwulf.9602

Though sometimes it’s because the group don’t really know the tactics, sometimes it’s just efficiency that drives this request. You can’t blame people for being efficient when they are grinding out their tokens. People get very quickly to the point where they are doing X simply to get Y. That doesn’t mean it’s not fun. It’s fun because they like getting Y, it makes them feel like they are getting somewhere. If they get it faster it’s more fun. If you want to blame something for this elitism you should blame the tiered gear. Because level 35s can’t get exotics, but level 80s can then their gear is always going to scale down better. Not to mention that even if level 35s could get exotics most of them wouldn’t have them. One solution to this is to have proper downscaling in dungeons, that is you are brought down to the level of level 35 greens or some standardised level. But people like the power their hard earned exotics bring so that’s not going to be very popular. Another solution is to just accept it, level up, then it won’t matter.

Grumwulf.9602

I love evrything about the rifle. The only change that wouldn’t ruin the entire profession, whole game (ok I’m exaggerating – but only a bit) is making the 1 ability much less range like 600 but with a great deal more damage. It’s a shotgun, if you want a rifle roll a warrior. Actually its not even a shotgun, just like engineer pistols aren’t really pistols. These are weapons that you have invented, tinkered with. Just because they have a standard name doesn’t mean you should view them as standard weapons. They fit the engineer class so well right now, with the net, the jump, the explosions, the multifunctionality. Seriously how can you want just a boring old rifle and want to play an engineer at the same time?

I found pistols on the thief really boring as most fight come down to using one ability. With the engineer not only will you be using almost all 5 abilities but you will also have a few F2,3,4 abilities that could really add to gameplay as well, such as throwing a handful of grenades, or a rocket out of your belt. Thief abilities do feel a bit more like pistols though, more like your typical idea of pistols anyway. Engineer pistols are more whacky, such as glue shot, poison darts, flameblasts…not really like pistols at all.

The funny thing is that I tended to zoom right out with that bug, just because it’s the natural thing to do but I think it made the game worse for me. I couldn’t see the animation of the mobs properly which is pretty important, and I lost that sense of “looking over my shoulder”. My problem with having a zoom this high is that the highest zoom is always the default because you always can get to that setting just by spamming your mousewheel. But how would I get it to the zoom it’s at now? Just by eye I guess but I don’t trust those as much as scrolling back all the way.

Underwater Combat Difficulty

Grumwulf.9602

I was very disappointed with underwater combat and the underwater zones. One of my favorite zones in WoW was Vashj’Ir and I was sure GW2 was going to outdo this in terms of visuals. Perhaps they still will. I’d love a very deep and huge underwater zone. But only if they can make it fun to play in it. Less mobs and mobs placed in more varied ways, so that it might be safe on the ocean floor at one point and at another be full of crabs. Also have the mobs doing more natural things not just floating aimlessly. At the moment it seems mobs are simply placed in order to get in your way or to make sure theres no empty spaces. They should be placed more creatively than that. These ones mining the floor, these ones guarding, these ones looting treasure. I liked the touch of floating undead that seemed like corpses until you got close, but there wasn’t enough of that kind of thing. Mobs were mostly place like some kind of homing mine.

I agree with you though about jumping puzzles in special events. A puzzle this hard ought to be a permanent fixture, perhaps introduced in a festival but not necessarily part of it. Festivals should be easy in my opinion because a lot of casuals players like to do all the achiements. They should definately make more puzzles like this though and make them even harder but put them permanently in the world so that you can go and do them at your own pace.

Could just be a change they made to DR and not the world at large. The Canthans/Elonians/Ascalonians division was dividing players along racial lines which NCsoft might not have liked. Class division is more universal in the sense that all races have rich and poor. Remember that they were aiming for a bigger audience than GW1 players also and a class division is more immediately comprehensible to players new to the lore. But this doesn’t mean Cantha and Elona have been deleted from the world, just from Divinity’s Reach.

My advice is to level up in the 1-15 areas. You will get to know which areas of these might be risky and once you get to around level 30 or 40 these areas become really really easy. When you get higher, perhaps even level 80, you can take advantage of the best gear and traits. Traits that will allow you survive better in downed state, or when low on health. Then you can take on the other challenges. If your aim is just to get to 80 then that’s easy. If its 100% completion or whatever, then good luck.

Crafting gives no benefit stats wise like some other MMOs. Its just so you can make stuff. If you want to make your own gear then huntsman and leatherworker are the best. But you could just sell all your gathering mats and buy the gear you need and would probably have more gold at the end. Another thing to consider is that you get 10 levels for each craft you level up to 400. So it has that benefit of levelling you up faster – or drawback if you want to level slowly.

Well what you need to do is get your mouse around about where you want to hit something, then you spam 1 while holding right mouse button down and moving with w, a, s, d. What happens is that the mouse will stay in the same relative position to your character so that by moving your character you position your grenades. Of course if you need finer tuning you can take right mouse button off and move just with w, a, s, d. This is a bit tricky. Make sure a and d keys are rebound for strafe left and right. I think that’s how I do it anyway, going from memory.

I love the rifle and would like it if they made it shorter range but do more damage. I love the shotgun feel. The toolkit is pretty good in PVE. I use it mostly for the burst of the number 3 ability. Start with rifle, use your throw wrench, when they get close, blunderbus plus crowbar and they’re dead twice over. Another thing you can do is melee a group of three while they attack your thumper turret. You dps them while healing your turret. Tank, dps and heal all in one.
