I’d love to know your reasons for wanting to run ranger if you’re serious sataar

Thief: that one dude that carries vexx really hard

Props to apollo for playing almost everything on paid level
Props to Deku God for playing the only spirit ranger in paids with no fear
Only reasons why I ever watch streams are:
-the streamer plays a class that I play
-the streamer is playing paid tournaments with a team
-the streamer talks to viewers in-between matches an provides tips or is naturally hilarious
-the streamer also has a link to the build he uses most regularly
Any one of those things would encourage me to keep watching
However things that immediately turn me of are:
-hotjoins
-seemingly constant afk with no group
-irritable attitude (some people rage hard even if they win or even during matches, I don’t mind being passionate after a loss because that makes sense)
Anyone who should be sitting and defending a node should have enough condition removal and defensive stats to deal with a condiion thief. Hell even people with balanced builds should be able to handle one type of condition. I play ranger and elementalist and these unicorn thieves are a joke.
And if you’re not built to deal with conditions then just leave. Condo thieves do next to nothing off a point.
And to those saying “oh I shouldn’t have to build a certain way to deal with thieves” well no ones asking you to entirely revamp your build and having some condo removal helps against almost every class. And these thieves are building a certain way to take a point, you can build to defend one.

1 guard and necro go mid
mesmer portal defends home point
the 2nd guardian assaults far point
and ur 5th either goes mid with the necro and guard or assaults far point with the other guard.

I heard somewhere that the loading screen bug will be fixed on monday. If developers are still awake reading the forums, I hope someone can tell us if it’s still on schedule or not. Not that it really matters, just a member of the community looking to be kept in the loop.

Everytime I get to loadscreen it seems to stun me whether i have stability or not. I dont know if this was intended or not but i think it’s a bug. Anyways maybe the developers should look into it.

So I was wondering exactly how these gems actually work, i havnt opened my paid tournament chests because i heard they were from them but I wasnt sure. How the heck do you get the gems referred to here:
Paid tournaments also provide each finishing place a small chance to win gems in the following amounts. The chance of winning one of these is approximately 1 in 4. No player can win twice.
10 gems
35 gems
80 gems
120 gems
1000 gems
This would basically make the pvp scene 1000x bigger than what it is now. I know things are in the works like custom servers and spectator mode.
But i keep thinking that so much work and time is invested in such a community. Maybe prioritizing something like this would help size up and make some other features actually worthwhile.

Most of the whining is for sPvP and is well deserved. Honestly bro, I dont understand how people havnt figure this out yet.
PvE and WvWvW is largely gear dependent and even if you think you’re “outskilling” players in WvW there isnt that fierce competition that you’ll find in tournaments. I’m not trying to attack you OP but im getting this feeling that you’re shoving dirt on to the whiners because you don’t feel the position that they’re in. You play PvE and WvW where balance changes and class imbalances are hardly felt.
And this goes for the rest of you that is trying to tell the forum board to stop the whining… The whining is well deserved and if you dont play sPvP tournament play.

Why dont i like my ranger? well to be honest i freaking love my ranger it’s incredibly fun to play and the combat system is just to my liking.
However, I dislike arena net because they continue to not allow me to bring anything of value to a tPvP team that another profession cant do better. They continue to hide behind false claims (hidden shortbow nerfs) and they ignore us in the major patches. Anyone remember the halloween update for rangers? oh wait there wasnt one.
It’s been said over and over and over again for the past 2 months that rangers are the worst class in tPvP. And from a e-sports balancing perspective they have nothing to solve it, in fact they focus on changing more balanced classes like engineer instead of ranger.
This patch they said they ran out of time to do any major changes to ranger, we only have 2 developers. That’s no excuse why every other class has more substantial changes than ranger whether it be nerfs or buffs. It’s obvious we’re being ignored.

Nothing to even put a blip into the viability of the ranger class in tournaments. You havnt done ANYTHING since release to solve these issues.
Look, I’m sure you can understand my frustration. May have even experienced it yourself in another game, but telling me to have patience after having to basically re-roll ele just so i can play some paid tournaments for months is asking a little too much.
From a game development stand point, I understand it’s a lot easier to deal with an underpowered class than an overpowered one because the issues arnt as present. But please… please,please,please,please,please. Devote some time and give rangers something to do in paids before the next big patch.

IDK the halloween patch was also very confusing when it came to the actual release time. I hope they give us an ETA because atm i’m so flustered with anticipation of ranger changes I cant do anything lol.

To be quite honest, I freaking love this game. Most of these posts are right though, there is not enough pvp content… At… The… Moment. But you have to understand that random content isn’t always the best. For example world of Warcraft; tons of pvp maps WSG, AB, EOtS, arenas, dueling, etc. But I prefer to play GW2 because it simply feels more interactive with dodgerolls and animation based skills.
What I’m trying to say is that content through gamemodes is not exactly the best way to bolster a pvp environment. Take LoL for example, for a long time it just had summoners rift (5v5) to play and it took a while (I don’t know exactly how long) for twisted treelike and dominion to be implemented. Now these gamemodes suffer because the game will continue to be balanced around 5v5 and any ranking automatically loses credibility because of how imbalanced it is.
Now speaking of complaining, here’s what bothers me the most. People complaining about 8v8 on a 5v5 map. This type of set up has been in almost every FPS for decades. Yes, I know GW2 is not an FPS but the same idea is there. If there are leavers (which there will be because they do not get punished in hotjoins) they will be much less impactful in an 8v8 setting vs a 5v5 setting.
We’ve all been in free tournaments or even paid where one of our teammates disconnects or fails to show up for one reason or another. But imagine that kind of lopsidedness in every hotjoin. Who would play that? Honestly.
The only reason why one might want hotjoins to be 5v5 is to practice for tournaments. But… There… Is… No… Punishment… For free tournaments either. There is no drawback to solo queueing a free tourny while your friends are offline.
Here’s an analogy, hotjoins are like battlegrounds in WoW (not related to arenas at all) and free tournaments are like skirmishes and pairs are like rated arenas. Now let’s move on and have fun.
How to leave tourney, Alt-F4 and go do something else, the amount of people that do that is ridiculous. Every time I do pug tPvP its 5 v 4 or 4 v 5 on the first map, then instant lose to premade in round 2. Sometimes you get a good match up of 5v5
How is that even relevant? If you join tPvP with pug instead of group it’s your problem.
No, it’s everyones problem. If arena net does not develope a system that promotes casual/pugs then the pvp scene will stay small and dwindle. At the moment a large portion of the playerbase is being alienated from tournaments because leavers and premades. I’m sure this wasn’t anets intention

I main ranger and honestly I have no idea how skirmishing or any of the random point values are handed out (and im rank 40 btw lol)
But i definitely dont seem to have a problem getting skirmisher at range.
Honestly I enjoy conquest. CTF and deathmatch gamemodes might be fun but they’re too linear for my tastes. by linear i mean, they’re arnt many routes available to achieve the end goal.
In deathmatch you achieve victory by killing your opponents or are defeated by your own death. Pretty clear cut and bland.
In CTF gamemodes you achieve victory by picking up an objective from the enemies base and walking it back to your own. I could see ways to mix things up and add more elements to CTF but I havnt seen it from any game so it’s still considered bland imo.
Conquest and side objectives enable many routes to victory, especially in GW2 with the side objectives. The idea is basic where all you have to do is cap points and hope/pray that you reach 500 pts first. But if you pay attention to what’s going on you’ll see the capture points changing teams frequently.
This happens a lot when they’re working with the tournament servers so idk maybe there was a tiny update or something.
btw, there is no “best” for sPvP.. as we all are fighting in one datacenter.
yeah but for those looking to make tournaments groups anvil rock is a great place because heart of the mists always has people just milling about there.

Hey guys, some of the complaints in this thread have lead me to voice a counter argument to the OP.
I main and play arguably the most under powered profession currently, the ranger, and I find that these imbalances are not so great they cannot be overcome. I’ve acquired 3 qualifier points while only playing ranger on all 3 maps. And no I don’t play bunker either I play roaming burst conditions.
Also with the recent ele down state buffs i found that every single profession’s downstate is effective in one manner or another. I think it adds another element into the game which promotes skill through knowledge and action.
I’ll agree I do wish there was some sort of acknowledgement of my PvP achievements in PvE but I dont see that as a major deal breaker or something even worth acknowledgement in light of other issues.
Speaking of issues I will agree that Paid tournaments are a little weird in the sense they promote competition to the extreme, but they are extremely hard to get into. I’ve got a feeling that the PvP developers are old time e-sports players and will have a hard time devoting time and features toward the casual playerbase… which probably should get more attention than anything else.
But aside from that I find that tPvP is extremely fun and even entertaining to watch. The strategies most teams play with are extremely dynamic and there isnt anything that is glaringly OP or UP that breaks the game (beta jax style if you ever played LoL).
P.S. I cant say things arnt really messed up in 8v8 hotjoins though because i rarely play those :/
I’m a prime example of this, my main is a female human ranger and im a average 20 year old bro. The reason why I chose this character for my main is simple; I simply would rather spend hour and hours staring at a female kitten then a male one. Idgaf what other people think of me on my character when I’m the one spending time on it.
IDK i found that damage meters or numbers really dont help that much when determining what works/doesnt. Honestly the best way to figure that out is to play, practice and figure out a strat that will work with your team.
Many times information like that will distract you of what’s really going on. I.E. my opponent is doing way more damage than me his build must be super strong… when in fact it’s probably because you or someone else wasnt dodging or mitigating damage at the correct time.
@Kyzen it actually takes 15,000 glory to rank up once you hit 29 and then 45,000 glory to rank up once you hit 39.
So yes it does change.

There seems to be little to no work in the pvp section of this free to play game. They may be working their kitten off at anet but I’m not seeing results I’d like to see.
If I’ve read everything, and done the proper conversions, Mad King should be going live in about 30 mins.

If you’re relying on base stats to protect you from a thief you’re doing it wrong. You have defensive abilities for a reason… use them correctly and you should come out on top. I’m not saying that it’s easy but laying out some numbers claiming that you shouldnt get killed fast because of it isn’t going to get you anywhere.
P.S. I do not play a thief nor have i ever created one. I find their playstyle to be rather irritable. But should they catch you off guard, they deserve to kill you no matter how tank you are, simply because they’re using abilities and you’re not.

Honestly… it costs money to simply run the servers we’re playing on 24/7 pay the groups that are updating the game, and all the staff in between. The revenue from those initial sales will run out, and this game is supposed to carry on. Anet has just given us the option if we would like to help out or not with buying gems.

And this is only 8v8 format, imagine if people actually cared enough to notice spirit rangers and immediately slay them. Not to damper your hopes but hotjoins are kind of the worst place to assess build status because generally everything works to some extent. I mean my buddy ran banner longbow warrior for kitten and giggles and still topped the chart on his team… really doesnt mean it’s good though…
I really appreciate the feedback and I like all of your thoughts about the ranger class.
(I’ve read every single reply and have gotten new ideas for builds already!)

The purpose of this thread is to outline why Rangers feel outclassed and simply useless in sPvP and tPvP in hopes that Anet can address these issues in an organized manner.
Things to note: Almost every player in every profession feels this way in a sense because everyone dies at least some of the time in sPvP, so lets refrain focusing too much on what class
is OP and whatnot.
So let’s explain to arena net why we feel so terrible about where the ranger stands post SB nerf.

I think that ranger is bad because rangers don’t have a solidified role in tPvP and the last thing Anet needs to do, is to nerf an already nerfed/underpowered class in order to achieve balance.
