i just remapped all my abilities 6-0 to Shift+1-5
my laptop keyboard is kinda small so it works and i still run f1-f4 for attunement swaps when i play ele.
Also, I’m of the opinion you dont need fancy gear to be at the top of your game. Investing hundreds of dollars on a nice mouse and keyboard seems silly for a broke guy like me haha.
Idk how people can be dissatisfied with Johnathen’s post. There’s new stuff being implemented, hello 1 round matches anyone?
I mean… kitten guys, the february patch isnt even close to being out yet. cool ur kittens.
“There isnt anything we didnt already know”
A: No there’s plenty of stuff we didnt know in that post, a lot of it was suggested but none confirmed and written. rread the kitten post
K well, this thread has grown significantly since i first saw it. But the gist of what most posts are saying are
A. The game is fine and the QQ posts are made about people who need to learn how to play the game before insisting on a change.
B. The game is not fine and there are some major imbalances, the target of this thread being mesmers.
C. Sataar needs to cool his attitude roflmao
But in all seriousness, all these top players in this thread need to realize that every game has QQ posts about pub stomp kitten. That’s part of the game, some professions are better at taking advantage of noob players than others, and its the dev’s job to handle that situation and still create a competitive environment for the pros. So, sataar, it’s basically impossible to stop these QQ posts about thieves, mesmers or 100b warriors because hotjoins are still a part of the game.
On a more serious note. Lets say this state of the game was deemed perfect and nothing was changed for lets say 5 months. I am of the opinion that 2 things will be more widely considered imbalanced among the top tier teams. #1: Mesmer portal + timewarp and #2: Necro rez sig (also if engineer becomes more widely used elixir R is still pretty insane).
The reason why I think these spells are imbalanced is because the power behind these spells is enormous relative to other similar spells other professions possess. Key word being relative, you could nerf these spells to be on par with other professions… OR you could give each profession a class defining powerful utility that they dont have to trait for. The second option being preferred.
However, in conclusion, vain is right. This is the most balanced mmo in my experience or even possibly in existence. However, you cant sit here and tell me that it’s perfect and L2P.
anyway, happiness out!
Sataar, if you’re tired of the QQ show us. Play something else for a night, and go into paids without portal and timewarp and make me a video of you guys beating JBUO, RC, Qt. Then I’ll believe you.
I freaking love the EU vs NA thing right now, it’s bringing life back into this community or at least the competitive side. And heck isnt that what pvp is all about? competing? To see who’s top dog?
There is no rivalry without insults, we’re a bunch of gamers who play games… on the internet.
I completely understand. I mainly play thief and warrior, so I have seen how rewarding it can be to turn the tide of a fight. In fact that’s pretty much all I ever did.
I have also seen how frustrating it can be. If you have any one teammate that just isn’t up to par, it can mean the game. It doesn’t matter how good some of the other players are, things just happen so quickly that there’s really no possibility helping them.
I don’t think people understand what it would be like playing this game if survival wasn’t such a dire effort. I think it would encourage people to engage in fights more often. I know from playing a warrior that would be true. I actually hate just going in, unloading damage, and getting out. Killing people doesn’t even feel satisfying anymore unless it’s vs a bunker.
What I am advocating is that all damage be brought back equally, again not just burst, and to compensate bunkers can’t remain with their current ability to withstand damage as nobody would ever kill anybody. So burst would still exist as it does, it would just require better timing and coordination to utilize effectively. I feel as though it should require teamwork to kill someone very quickly, and not just one person’s whim.
As for rally and downstate, they could use dodgeball rules. Rallying could occur on merely downing someone, but it would only rally one person(the first person to be downed). So a roamer(or anyone assisting) could still turn the tide massively, they would just have to work harder for it. Res skills could be made to only res one person. So I don’t think that changing down state is necessary. This would make the momentum shifts of big fights much more predictable.
My, I’ve been getting a little wordy here.
Well lets think a little bit outside of the box now, rallying does provide huge momentum changes but there are other things that are similarly powerful and more consistent. Rallying itself only occurs during a situation in which a teammate is downed and an enemy is stomped or vise versa. However there are spells and utilities that proved the same if not more influence on a team fight. Ex; Rez signet, timewarp. Most of the time rez sig only needs to rez one person to be powerful, and timewarp is 10s of quickness which leads to some pretty nasty stuff.
I bring these spells up because I feel that it’s not just rallying that sways teamfights. And largely it’s not, even a well timed book can break a teamfight.
And as for your ideas about moderating the burst/bunkers. It does require a team to down a good player quickly. Generally 1v1s against good players will last a 30 seconds even on the glassiest of builds. But, a good player will down a bad player instantaneously mostly because lack of knowledge and a viable build. I feel these changes towards bunker/burst would cater too much towards beginners and the cost of a dynamic game for the rest of us.
so what u are saying is that the figth that was “won” turn to be a 100% loss becouse u die , so by killing u he was rewarded by ur death, the res of 2 team mates and a point cap all in like what 3 seconds? isnt that sound a bit too excesive? i saw that thing so many times for my team and the opposite team, i can deal with that type of gameplay its cool and all.
As easy the game is easy to play like using the skills moving and stuff but the game has to be more new friendly like i said the stuff that u said are fine but its not game healthy tbh.
What’s not game healthy is not having a matchmaking system, pitting no life “pros” against people who just hit rank 20 in paids is not okay.
Every game has a learning curve, this game might have a steep learning curve compared to most mmos. But it’s trying to be an e-sport for crying out loud, and guild wars 2 has a lower learning curve than league of legends.
Now take a moment before making a reply, League of Legends gave players 30 levels of noob heaven to learn every fasset of the game, and even starts people near the bottom of the ranking ladder when they jump into ranked.
If this game had some sort of tutorial or MMR where people had a chance to learn the impacts of stomping, rallying teammates, trebuchet on kyhlo, and all the things people fail to grasp in hotjoins. We might not be having this conversation right now.
What happened to me was against one of the best teams in north america. That should be expected, but that kind of stuff never happens in free tournaments.
To be the devil’s advocate here, I actually prefer the extremist pacing and how a well executed attack can turn the tides in your favor. Also how a poorly timed dodge can easily be your doom.
Let me use this example to explain my point; The other day i was playing with members of JBUO against QT one foefire. At one point my teammates had downed 2 enemies and were in the process of stomping them. I was mulling about at around 2k hp with 0 dodges left as a ranger on the mid point. Hman (a really good warrior) proceeded to cleave me down and quickness stomp me with stability, instantly rallying his teammates which lead to them winning the node.
Even though i was the victim of poor play, I felt that Hman’s actions should be rewarded and I should be punished for failure. This makes games more exciting and fun to play imo.
The way i read your post you suggest that they either remove or tweak downed state significantly and normalize damage and tankiness across the board to all professions. If this were to occur we would lose a ton of interactions with the downed state, and every single build would be similar. There wouldnt be any bunker builds, burst builds, condition builds, it would just be tanky dps, tanky dps, tanky dps.
That was mind numbing in LoL and that would be dreary here in GW2.
P.S. when you’re talking about room for error, you suggest that if they were to Incorporate your ideas the game would be more noob friendly. Well, there is only minimal room for error against good teams. If there was a matchmaking system so that noobs didnt have to go against experienced players… there would be more room for error.
That’s what they said about LoL, and guess what? They were wrong. Its like starting an entrepreneurship, its a gamble all right but that doesn’t mean it has no way of succeeding. Same concept with E-sports. Except a lot of issues such as accessibility and infrastructure which should’ve been addressed is just killing this game.
cool story bro tell it again

Well to be serious I think there are better ways to make gw2 popular and attend mlg. To make it popular I agree with helseth to incorporate a solo queue to give all the fresh blood a chance to win tournaments. To include MLG… Well almost any game is in mlg even super smash brawl… I mean if we had custom servers mlg could host gw2 on their next event even lol. At least that’s my understanding of how things work.
@sataar. Khalifa, and anybody else involved in this argument.
A little fun and games is fine but you don’t have to be a pro to see the line has been crossed. I love you guys but let’s get back to the topic at hand… EU vs NA
As a NA player I would love to see some showmatches between the top teams. I think it’d be a lot of fun, help build the community and hell we might all learn a thing or two we might not have realized before about gw2. And that goes for both regions.
(edited by HappinessFactory.4910)
Well time dodges against 100b, shatter, and Basalisk backstab combos always make me smile.
Idk about EU but on NA im pretty sure vyndetta is the best ranger. He played on PTC and also plays necromancer. I do alright for myself I play Ranger and elementalist and I’ve got 134 QP or something.
Also to those of you who dont give 2 kittens about QPs, Deku God is the only dude I’ve seen actually pull off spirit ranger in paids.
I dont think any rangers stream if that’s what you’re looking for, and if that’s true im sorry :/
Also to those of you in this thread that think people get good at certain builds and whatnot. It’s more than dueling, it’s more than what build you’re running and what weapon set your running. Each and ever player’s skill in this game is determined by their weight on a team. Nobody cares if you are robin hood of GW2 but if you only use longbow because of pride, you’re weighing your team down and nobody likes losing because someguy insisting on running a wonky build.
Thank you Evan for keeping us informed in such a well thought out professional manner. I honestly cant even pretend to stay so nice even though my IGN is Happinessfactory haha… Even though there are some things I wish had gone differently, I’m glad that there are people like you around to keep me informed.
From my experience thieves are generally countered by us rangers if we use traps. If you choose not to run a trap build, I don know what kind of power would convince you to do this… So run a trap build.
Strong, low cooldown, aoe abilities will always destroy thieves. In fact they work well against anybody except mesmers. So give that a shot before trying to nerf thieves again. Before u get any funny ideas I main ranger with over 1300 games played on the class.
It won’t take 1 day to fix a bug, there are millions of lines of code, if you change 1 thing you have to make sure you don’t have any wrong changes in the process, and god knows how long it takes them to compile the code for testing. They compile and come back the next day. I typed this in a way a 8 year old can understand.
Maybe they should hire a better live testing team or introduce public beta servers. Because stuff like loading screen bug and naked mesmer clones probably shouldn’t make it through large updates
To be fair a lot of top players are very content with balance as it is now. Sure tweaks could be made but it’s pretty good atm. The thing I can’t wrap my head around is the lack of features. But supposedly the months to come in the new year will fix that.
I do my best to create my own builds, play with my friends, and play competitively.
Guess that makes me all 3
Why is rating so important for your team other than bragging rights? Am I the only person that actually enjoys pvp for the sake that it is pvp?
I figure everyone who is still playing spvp right now is doing it simply for the sake that it’s fun. Right now there is no reason to play except for the experience and the will to improve. That shows promise, and that’s why everyone wants features because most if not everyone at least wants to improve on that experience. It’s hard watching pvp this good in an mmo fail.
@happy. i fell you bro this game has been making even the best of us fell a little pesimistic but more paids would pop you wont have to worry about sitting around the mist as much anymore for 2 reasons.
1: more teams will q because of the second reason so you can be in q faster
2: teams will be able to play every map and get better nomatter the outcome
3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX07j9SDFcc (i hope everyone laughs here)
Thanks sataar, also I didnt mention this but, sataar but your support for this spvp community is unparalleled and I’m sure someday you’ll get recognized for it. In the meantime I hope this gets implemented.
@follidus Alright I can understand that, but if this system were to be implemented the tournaments would take longer because no one is getting kicked out of first round, thus making the next tournament queue take longer.
Idk why I’m being such a pessimist today lol, but I’ll say one thing. I would rather this system be implemented than what’s currently in place. I would like matchmaking first but I would rather have this be the next major change following matchmaking or something similar than obs mode/custom servers.
I think something of this nature would be a step forward to fixing the lack of fun problem.
Someone once told me that tournaments arnt that great because you still feel like you lost even if you get second place. Maybe sataars change would do something to address that.
(edited by HappinessFactory.4910)
Okay I’ve been doing some more thinking about paid tournaments, and i need a few questions answered, and these questions will be directed towards sataar and anyone else who wants paids to pop more.
1. What is the goal behind these changes? If the plan is to make paids pop almost as often as frees through ticket refunds then what would be the difference?
2. I like your previous idea of an advanced option acting as a medium between paids and frees. But wouldn’t a well thought out matchmaking system that seperates people according to their skill levels do this better?
I think the ultimate goal for all of us who wants arena net to succeed is having Guild Wars 2 become popular, fun and hopefully an e-sport. While almost any change at this point would be beneficial, we have to look at cost and I’m not sure this sort of change would be in everyone’s best interests in light of other changes.
Allow me to elaborate, potentially the reason why paids are not popping very often is that there arn’t enough players willing or able enough to sustain paids. Now what seems to be most people’s solution to this problem is offering a ticket refund similar to what arena net already had in place before the latest reward change. But that system didn’t help queues…
The reason why I think it didn’t help queues is because it did nothing to support the overall population. This lead me to thinking that maybe the best way to get people into paids is have more people doing free tournaments. Free tournaments, are reasonably appealing to everyone except for those who get bored from stomping noobs, and noobs who get bored from getting stomped.
This train of thought has lead me to believe that a matchmaking system in frees which has a population to sustain it, might coerce newer players into sPvP. More players > more tickets > more paids.
This is based on a lot of assumptions and I’d like to hear everyone’s thoughts on it!
Uhm i think the 26th is today, and today’s Wednesday…
I’m sad i missed it again T_T relatives suck!
I think there is a range on the pet but it’s enormous like mesmer portal range. Maybe it needs to get toned down a little idk I havnt seen this being gamebreaking in anyway just irritable… like it should be i think.
However, as a ranger I do feel like im being carried by my pet in terms of damage. I expect the pet to act as minor passive damage because that’s what I imagine of each class with a dedicated pet to rely on. But right now my pet’s auto attacks hit harder than mine on a moving target lol…
I hope sometime in the future, some of that power will transfer to the ranger.
i replied to this earlier bro guess my post was infracted all i said was this is really long and i agree with everything u said. great read bro i guess i wont reply to posts at 4 am to make sure i dont get infractions.
PS. can you try and make it longer next time you forgot to add mesmers need a nerf.
haha sataar I’m gonna guess you’re referring to that earlier post I made about the mesmer portal. Everyone’s got their opinions
But speaking of infractions, this forum board does seem a little too regulated for my tastes. I mean I get that trolls/spammers and all that stuff is bad, but a lot of just for fun posts are getting removed because they’re not promoting discussion.
I guess what im trying to say about the regulation is that there it’s a double edged sword. It stops the trolls/spammers pretty handidly, but it also sucks the soul out of the forums. You have to be either super serious and on topic or risk getting infracted.
Anyway im sorry that happened to your post and im glad you agree with most of my point of view xD
You think this game is balanced? Duel a full glass cannon ranger against full glass cannon thief or mesmer and let us see how well you do.
I dont want to have a full fledged discussion about class balance but i feel like i should explain myself so people dont get confused.
By good balance I mean that I see every profession running a variety builds in free tournaments every day. In paid tournaments that variety slims, and there are favorites, but with nearly every profession being viable and having more than one build to play I’d say that’s good balance.
When i was watching the WoW finals I wasnt surprised watching the two best teams compete with the exact same classes and the exact same builds (Resto shaman, Frost mage, and destro lock [I think]). Compared to that GW2 has amazing balance, and it might be why I like to play it so much and would love to see it succeed.
The main problem is that new players have no inspiration to start playing sPvP, other then to test builds or try something ells. I feel like there needs to be made “heros” in sPvP. There needs to be elite players that new players can look up too, and use as inspiration to become better. As it is now, only people who care to know, has any idea about who’s the top players.
Imagine if every month there was a huge amount of advertising, about the upcoming monthly tournament, in all game modes. I’m talking about advertising on signs in LA and WvW, NPCs talking about the upcoming tournaments, and even a video on the website. All done to promote sPvP, and to urge people to come and watch the matches in Spectator Mode!
Imagine something like this video, with a voice-over that talks about the last match ups, upcoming matches, teams, and top players, for the next monthly tournament:
http://youtu.be/h7OvAK0wFoA?t=1m6sBasically; give people a reason to love sPvP, even if they don’t like playing it.
Speaking of monthly tournaments, I was talking with a friend of mine and we were discussing most of which that has already been discussed. But then he brought up monthly and yearly tournaments which I have since completely forgotten about.
Paid tournaments were released almost 2 months ago and we have no signs of monthly tournaments. Which would act as an incentive, I mean i get that things take time to develop things but I just wish they were timed more appropriately.
I mean how much sense would it make if they had a solo/premade queue ladder system that were single matches like league of legends.
Then months later they introduced the free tourny> paid tourny > monthly tourn > yearly tourny system… when it was actually finished.
But i guess its no use pandering in the past, I just hope when all anets plans come together it pans out for us and for them.
Did you get everyone to go along with this last time? Cuz I’m down for it… I’m rank 49 though people probably won’t want to give up their rank 50 spots for me :<
@wise, literally no other class can play back point as effectively as a Mesmer. If you don’t have a backpoint mesmer you will either be down a person at mid or leave home base undefended. You say all one has to do is force the mesmers portal so they have to go back… You don’t have to do that with any other class.
Removing portal won’t break mesmers viability, timewarp will still be considered the most powerful elite in the game. Shatters are incredibly strong in a teamfight and mesmers would become the best 1v1 class because people could run mirror images or something instead of portal.
Nuh-nnnnn-nailed it!
Thanks for the compliments Felivear! And I agree with you, it feels like there is a massive gap in effort when it comes to combat development and pretty much everything else that involves sPvP.
I mean who knows, maybe if we didn’t hold it on to such high standards and build up expectations for ourselves we could have expected this.
But yeah it really feels like they’re walking with the freaking baton and it hurts as spectators to just watch em walk.
Kinda the opposite for me.
Why spend hours grinding PvE gear when it has no purpose in competitive (s/tPvP)?
I mean you can grind gold for gems forTourny Tickets and finishers I guess but that’s about it…
Jumper we’ve talked and you know im incredibly impressed by your dedicated grind to raise your rank.
But you’ve just brought a whole ‘nother point to the table. Literally nothing but gems transfer between sPvP and PvE/WvW. Spending hundreds of hours in PvE will still land you at rank 1 with everyone else who started the game. Spending hundreds of hours in PvP will land you at level 2 with everyone else who started the game. If you want to experience everything you’re encouraged to split your time to do both, but if you do that you’re not likely going to get anywhere in either.
For example, I dont see anybody rank 45+ doing fractals 20+ or with a legendary. Whenever I do PvE if feel like im falling behind in sPvP, and because I do so much sPvP i feel like i have no chance at getting a legendary.
I’ll be honest the only reason why i leveled was because i wanted to do something before paids started. Eventually i got addicted to it because it was fun, but I never do things for the grind.
1on1 matchmaking is nonsense as classes arent balanced 1on1.
Private servers… i kinda expected them to be here bout now, but i can practice in empty servers i guess.
Maybe but dueling seems to make sense in order to practice for those 1v1 situations which always happen in matches.
The system seems to have too many mtg roots. Mtg uses a tournament system mostly out of necessity rather than it being an optimal system for generic play. Given online access and the game mostly upholding its own rules a tournament system isn’t a necessity and something more optimal can be used.
Even the paid entry fee seems to be based off mtg.
I never thought of that but yeah you’re absolutely right.
During Christmas I played the bell event and almost nobody had pvp gear in my zones except for myself. I expected this but then I thought to myself, why would these people ever want to play spvp? I couldn’t answer that question, hotjoins arnt fun and they are not at a high enough rank to get invited into a free tournament group. Hell if they aren’t from anvil rock they’ll probably never get a free tournament group (NA of course).
Why bother trying to get into the sPvP scene when there’s a full game to play, dungeons to run, castles to destroy and legendaries to make. Unless someone is dedicated to mmo pvp it doesn’t happen. There isn’t a ELO to be proud of, there is no dueling to be had, there arnt even fun activities to bide time with for sPvP, there arnt even people who are willing to discuss the pvp without being sore and angry after 10 minutes. I would be proud of my 115 QPs if most people didn’t treat is as jack kitten because u don’t lose any QPs if you lose…
The only drive people have to rank up is to look cool and even THAT’S not fun because the mystic forge just feels like it’s eating materials. If the price of an item was double the average amount of glory it takes to craft something in the mystic forge… it would still feel better buying it than crafting it in the forge. Playing solo queue free tournament is like jumping into a quake server without ever playing quake before (A sheer nightmare). Ranking acts as a barrier of entry and the QP ladder just makes the elite feel more elite. There are no features to draw new player to play sPvP and the systems in place appear to just kick people off the bottom rung on the ladder.
If you’ve read this far I commend you, but take note I am not a game developer I am a player and I only voice my opinion that has been influenced by the voices of others. If there was one thing I would like to see, I would like to see that Anet holds true to their promise of a matchmaking system in January. I would like to see some of those PvE developers to remodel the mists and I would like to see more activities for the sPvP community so we can have some good natured fun when we feel like taking a break from competing without having to resort to leveling or doing dungeons or some nonsense like that.
TL;DR: I’m afraid I cant help you with that one
P.S. For some reason it’s difficult for me to stay on track when I’m writing, and I’ve re-read it and it makes sense in my head but I just hope it made sense in yours.
*I’ll attach a screen shot for proof
I’ve thought a lot about this game and read a lot of posts, experienced a lot of tournaments and have figured it’s about time I vent my frustration. If you want my credentials and a look at my point of view then allow me to inform you; at this point in time i have played 1,027 hours 700 of which on my ranger, i have 115 QP, and 1,272 tournaments won. I’ve spent more than time on this game than most people would deem “healthy”. Mostly because I find the PvP incredibly fun and engaging. *
However, as much fun as it is, it is not without faults as most of dwellers of this forum have ascertained. But I don’t find this faults to be with class balancing. I see loads of threads complaining about mesmers/guardians/thieves what have you, but from my perspective and the perspective of the people that i play with… The balance is really good in this game especially for an mmo. Of course there could be tweaks to make more variety but comparatively, this game’s balance is something that most mmos should aspire to. Everything else is much less impressive.
The faults that myself and many others are discovering or have already discovered are seemingly much larger and much more difficult to fix. Let’s talk a little about lack of features. This game was launched with free tournaments and hotjoins… and that’s it. Coming from beta weekends and expecting a lot more on release, needless to say i was disappointed but hey I figured anet doesnt owe me anything, this game is worth much more than the 60$ i payed for it so I’m going to wait and see. I mean e-sport for an mmo has never been successful and trying to break the mold and create new systems that might work cant be easy.
I sat in the mists for 2 months never once leaving aside from little escapades with friends who have since found better things to do with their spare time. To me, the release of paid tournaments on halloween was like christmas coming early and removing the svanir and block bugs brought me to tears with joy. As time passed i figured I’d step outside the little bubble of the mists and level my ranger to 80 and witness what “the other side” had to offer.
Needless to say my mind was blown. The scenery as i leveled continued to amaze me zone after zone, the way the events worked together was entertaining and i enjoyed the story mode enough to turn off my music and listen to the voice overs. I took my time leveling I completed each zone I stepped foot in and I loved it. I stopped setting up groups for free and paid tournaments and only bothered to pvp when invited by someone i know.
Then I began seeing why there are so few people in the mists. Even in anvil rock where i see tons of people everyday chilling next to the collectibles locker, there would probably be more people in WvW at any given time.
Taking a step back, i looked at the game from a distance. Heart of the mists is one zone, that literally looks like a world of warcraft private server. Vendors strewn about in order that hand out loot, NPC’s you see in FoN/LotF but not a trebuchet u can practice killing like you might on khylo. The cannons have just started working. And I have doubts that the class bots have been kept updated with the latest patches. There is also an unfinished jumping puzzle of some sort near the underwater training area. Compared to the dozen or so zones outside of the mists, HoM doesn’t look good.
Okay I’ve ventured a little off track but let’s get back to features. I don’t know what the size is of the sPvP team is. I’ve seen posts but I don’t know what to compare that to, so I have no idea at what rate I should expect things but there are some things myself and every other player does know.
Every month so far, the PvE crew cranks out a new dungeon and lots of content like it’s their job. Literally mini-expansions as developers like to call them. Most of this content is a massive PvE update, a little bit for WvW, and a large balance update for sPvP . sPvP players have received a new map and paid tournaments. And that’s great but there’s a larger issue at hand.
-edit- i typed this on my phone so excuse the spelling/grammar mistakes
I play a lot of tourney games and I’ve only experienced one guy using a macro and I’m sure everyone on the leaderboard knows who he is.
And in my opinion mesmers are fine balance wise but they suffer from poor design. I mean having one utility making them a requirement for every team kinda sucks… And if u don know what utility I’m talkin about, I’m talkin about portal. But the something goes for a necro’s Rez sig.
It seems to me that these utilities almost hold greater power than elitis which is silly. I mean when mesmers were broken and their clones failed, the portal was still so effective you could play with a Mesmer in paids without much punishment.
(edited by HappinessFactory.4910)
1. No player or team in this game is anywhere near reaching the skill-ceiling in this game.
2. I don’t see your name anywhere on the QP ladder
3. Where does that put you in comparison, and how can you say the skill-ceiling is low?1. The post was specifically focused on increasing individual skill gap, not team-based skill gaps. There is a huge difference between those two concepts. If you think this game has a individual high skill ceiling as designed, you are delusional.
2. True. I am not currently playing on an organized team, which makes it hard to gain QP.
3. Irrelevant. See above. How can I say the skill ceiling is low? Re-read my original post, which explains my views on the issue with individual skill gap in this game.
Your post is not mean, just idiotic. Anybody who has ever played a real competitive game, including games with complete joke competitive communities (like most FPS titles, sans Counterstrike) view GW2 right now as beyond irrelevant. So, while you might be proud of your QP accomplishments and think you are therefore an authority or guiding light for GW2 skill-based commentary, you might table your urge to pat yourself on the back and actually consider the content of your posts.
For all you know or don’t know, I could be a very skilled gamer who has played various titles competitively at a very high level, albeit mostly FPS games, and a person whose vast experience qualifies me to comment, even if I do not currently have the time, patience, or desire to grind QP points.
In any event, here’s the basic point broken down for you (because you might be too dense or blinded by your self-deluded view of your personal accomplishments to digest this otherwise):
In my view, reactionary defensive play has the greatest prospect for creating a robust individual skill gap given the current game design (which does not focus on rewarding skill shots and other difficult offensive play). However, defense is trivialized when classes have an over-abundance of it, such that the margins for error are so high that most players (beyond the top 1-3%) can either maximize or come close to maximizing defensive effectiveness. Therefore, one solution would be to take a close look at defensive cooldowns to determine whether they should be toned down, so that players will be punished more severely for failing to identify the proper times to use those abilities.
You can debate the merits of the point, but honestly dude, tossing QP into this debate is sort of the pinnacle of d-chery. If that’s what you were going for, gratz.
I’m going to agree with follidus here, I’m not on a team either and i got 110 QP so yeah…
but back to the main argument. You’re claim is that GW2 has a low skill ceiling in comparison to common FPS. In that sense you’re absolutely correct. I’ve talked to people on top tier TF2 and counterstrike teams and they’d probably agree with me that it’s 80% aim and 20% strategy that makes a good player.
But this is not a FPS, the only thing that involves aiming is fatty circles for your aoes and fire dash on elementalists. This game acts as a median between strategy and skill. It’s smack in the middle between league of legends and your FPSs when it comes to skill and strategy.
Anyway, to further explain myself, every game will have skill tiers even crates. Right now i see the tiers as: PvE casuals|Hotjoin casuals|Free Tourny players| Paid tournament players| And then the guys who actually win paid tournaments regularly.
in TF2 it might be: Hat Traders|PUB noobs| PUB Stars|Lobby lurkers|Highlander league players|amateur league players| then invite level
It’s all the same, there is a skill gap and no one has hit the skill ceiling yet the game has only been out for 3 months…
I appreciate you trying to diversify the meta, but creating builds simply for the sake of diversity doesnt seem to be the best way to go about this. I’m going to be honest, that I dont see any of these working well in paids aside from your condition thief.
I’d love to be proven wrong, but frankly there are reasons some of these builds have lost their viabilty and arn’t effective against the current “meta” builds.
Yeah, like many other have already said you couldn’t be more wrong about this jjaja. The forums are not crying for buffs, all people are asking for is a little bit of attention from the devs to fix the numerous bugs and blatant fails of minions and life siphon. Having two trait trees that are almost completely useless is mind boggling. Even more so since it’s been this way since release.
But khalifa lots of classes have bugs and useless traits, i mean i play ranger and the only build i can convince myself to play is traps. And i agree that, there should be more than one way to play each class competitively but at the moment that isnt really possible.
And from a balance perspective these useless traits and bugs dont have a large impact on balance because they’re not seen. Unless something is blatantly overpowered it wont receive a lot of attention and be fixed ASAP. It will take time to bring things up to viability.
wouldn’t mind a small nerf or fix to mesmers as there is no strong competition for side point holder considering their portal and they are an overall great class and good in 1v1s, just makes it feel like you cant run a team without one. The recent buffs they got were completely unnecessary.
I feel the same way, but when it comes to fun i actually prefer playing with and against mesmer side bunkers because it makes games way more entertaining than dealing with a 2nd bunker on side point on both teams.
I’d enjoy watching some of your games once you get your team going
I think it would be incredibly entertaining watching people just get cleaved by warriors lol…
lol, speaking of that underwater cave. Do you think anets every gonna get that finished so we have something else to do in the mists besides walk around and hit dummies?
bump!_____________
I’d really like to know if they intend to release holiday skins for PvP
@Aydenunited bro you got 3 options when you join a duel server. And It’s not hard to take a second to check if it’s a duel server or not.
1. Start dueling, it’s a great way to improve skill and how to counter and work against other classes.
2. Leave, find another server if you’re goal is to play hotjoins then capping points/kittening with duels isnt going to be the fight and you wont get even close to amount of glory as you would in a traditional 8v8.
3. You can just kitten with the duels and be an entitled kitten whole that thinks that they have rights because the play the “correct game mode”
You claim that the duelers should just leave to find another server, but dude 1 guy asking a group to leave because they arnt playing the right gamemode? That’s just kittened up…
I think you should be allowed to change traits/classes in between matches but right when u load into a map it should be locked.
However, I also feel like being able to change utilities is also a good thing because it adds another layer of strategy that everyone can use to their advantage. Honestly changing characters seems to have crosses that line between okay and not okay for me at least in the middle of matches.
Some people might think that everything should be stagnant, like weapon changes/utility changes mid game but I think it adds another layer of strategy that you can use to gain an advantage.
I use the razer orochi but i dont have anything extra binded too it except auto run lol…
side note: I think rangers can fill a role.
On that side note-
What role would that be?
I’m desperately trying to find a good reason to bring my ranger to paids.
