Would it be that bad if we copied WoW?

2v2/3v3 could be interesting, not sure how it would be balanced, but it would still be interesting. Stat progression though… Nty. Been said a million times, and it’s going to be said again; Skill should determine how well you do, not by how much you grinded for gear, and if you’re fighting people with equal stat gear, what would be the point of stat progression anyway? Does the illusion of stat progression really make the PvP so much better? Fun and the upcoming ranking should be the main incentive.

Besides the obvious things which they’ve already mentioned they were going to add (Like spectator, more gamemodes, ranking etc.), I honestly don’t even think there is anything major Anet could “take” from WoW, which would actually benefit PvP.

The low-down on the "Solo-Queue" Fiasco

in PvP

Posted by: Ironcloud.3892

Ironcloud.3892

I kind of understand where they’re coming from now. They’re trying to find a midway between fair matchups and good queue times, although soloQ would be awesome, considering how the small the sPvP population is currently, once people start getting their rating up, the queues would be horribly long.

Although most other players and I would MUCH prefer a soloQ, I don’t think it’s a bad idea to use this temporarily until the population can get to a more stable level, where it can actually support a soloQ properly.

In the end it is much better than what we’ve previously had to deal with.

Just my opinion.

*Correct me if I’m wrong, but the new queue is pretty much:
If you queue as a 5 man premade, the game will try and queue you up against another 5 man premade of similar average rating, if after a certain amount of time the game can’t find another 5 man premade, you are dropped down and queued against a 4 man premade w/ 1 random of similar rating, and so on and vice versa.

If this is incorrect then I take everything back.

Actually no. Forget all of this, WE NEED A SOLOQ. It’s worth the extra queue time if there isn’t a chance of being stomped by a premade. How do you expect casual players to get anywhere? It doesn’t matter if it’s a 0.01% chance of being queued up against a premade, just knowing that there is a chance is completely demoralizing for most players.

Yes, we need a soloqueue. Why would a new player want to queue up, knowing that there is a possibility of being stomped by a premade? I haven’t touched a Free or a Paid tourney mainly because of this reason.

It’s nice that we’re finally getting MMR and all, but with no soloqueue, it almost makes it pointless for most people without a team.

Ironcloud.3892

How exactly is this a bad thing? Do we even know how nodes will be affected with guesting? Even if you were able to farm 3x the nodes, that isn’t exactly that big of a deal as I doubt that many would exploit it anyway…

One thing which could be a major issue is if one server was assigned as the “Unofficial PvE server” which everyone guests over to, making it a lot harder to do large scale PvE events on lower pop servers.

Though if that was the case, playing with friends on other servers, being able to participate in community events on different servers, having the ability to hang out in the unofficial PvP servers hotm without transfering etc, would REALLY make up for it imo.

Take out the dodge gimmick, and what’s the real difference between WoW combat, and GW2 combat?

-Combo system
-There are no castbars, you have to judge when to avoid damage purely by looking at your opponents animations.
-Every class has a heal
-More fluid combat (Most abilities can be cast whilst moving, You can use skills outside of combat and when you haven’t targetted something etc)
-Weapon swapping/skillsets with different weapons
-Each class has their own mechanic.
-Very few high CD skills, Elites are usually the only high CD skill.

Probably missed something else, but yeah, there are a lot of differences…

And I mostly disagree with what you’re saying about the games being similar, or at least, this game is FAR from a “clone” of WoW, sure they’re similar types of MMOs, but there are some huge differences, one being how GW2 is mostly horizontal progression, whereas WoW is pretty much all vertical.

But I understand what you’re trying to stay, I believe some large scale hardcore PvE content would be great for the game, but most people (Or at least the more vocal people on the forums) would just shun the idea, saying “We don’t want this game to have a gear treadmill”, assuming that a game with raid-style content has to come along with gear progression, just because WoW had it like that.

When it states there’s very high population, it’s meant to indicate that there’s a large sum of people that have that World as their home and not how many people are logged in.

Wrong, the sever status changes daily to hourly…it is based on the people logged in NOT the total number of toons on that server

No, it’s actually not wrong. It’s already been stated by ANet that the server population reflects how many accounts have been made in/are housed in that server. Not how many players are online on that server. Only reason for the changes you’re seeing are server transfers.

Link to this statement?

It’s true, but there has also been an Anet post saying otherwise, so no clear answer on how the server population is calculated. I imagine it’s something like a mix of both housed accounts and online players.

Yea, the game could use some character wipes and migrations before the paid server transfers start happening. Being forced to pay a fee just so you can play a supposed mmo with other players isn’t exactly fair.

And that’s why guesting is coming along with it…

When people watch a stream, i’m going to take a guess and say 80% of the time people are watching for the streamer, 20% for the actual game. It’s about time (For the game and the streamer) and getting your name out there, and it’s pretty clear that certain streamers are growing, relatively slowly, but growing nonetheless.

You could also look at something like Street Fighter 4, currently has almost 12k viewers for regional’s, 2nd top channel has 74 viewers…

One thing you’re right about is that the game isn’t Esports material, not yet at least, it needs things like spectator mode/ladder/custom arenas first

Current Topic Poll: Mid-Jan. 2013

Ironcloud.3892

1) Would you prefer ascended gear to be the last tier implemented for the remainder of GW2? It kind of depends on how new tiers would be implemented, but mostly yes.
2) Would you prefer ascended gear to be equal to exotic gear in all statistics except agony resistance? No.
3) Would you prefer the level cap to remain at 80 for the remainder of GW2? Really depends on how a higher level cap is pulled off, if it involved me completely throwing away all my previous gear, then no.
4) Would you prefer if WvW was set up on an equal playing field similar to PvP? No.
5) Would you prefer if WvW / PvP / PvE had separate skill functionalities? Yes, but only for
6) Would you prefer if Magic Find was removed from the game completely? Yes.
8) Is GW2 too ‘Grindy?’ No, there is very little gated content which actually requires you to grind, most ‘Grind’ in this game is completely subjective.
11) Do you have as much faith [and/or enthusiasm] about the game [and/or company] as you did before launch? Yes, i’m very pleased with the game so far, they’re being a bit slow on the PvP side of things, but overall i’m pretty happy with GW2.
12) Do you reasonably expect [many of] your primary concerns to be addressed in early 2013? Most have already been addressed.

A Statement Regarding Vertical Progression.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ironcloud.3892

Ironcloud.3892

I’m still pretty confused on why everyone screams “VERTICAL PROGRESSION!!!” after the release of this update, when all it is, is just another stat tier added on to the 5 of which we already had, only difference being is that there is a slightly bigger jump in effort to get it. The game you bought before is the game you still have, a horizontal MMO with a little bit of non gated vertical progression.

And although I don’t mind the fractals and Ascended gears themselves, Anet definitely implemented them wrongly, a main reason being that there is currently very little incentive to do anything other than farm Fractals (PvE-wise), which results in the death of certain zones… But this has already been addressed as an issue.

in PvP

Posted by: Ironcloud.3892

Ironcloud.3892

What we need right now is ranking/ladder, solo/duo queue, team queue and single map matches. Although new game-modes would be fun, it shouldn’t be a high priority at the moment.

Not to mention, considering how the game is balanced around capture the point, a lot of game-modes would be extremely imbalanced, most would probably just be hotjoin modes.

Vertical progression =/= gear treadmill.
Adding one more tier of gear =/= gear treadmill.

Stop acting as if Anet announced that they were going to add a new tier (Of which is required to be viable in PvE and WvW), every other month.

Real problem is how you can only get these Ascended items from fractals… Luckily Anet have addressed this as an issue.

Adding a statistically superior set of gear that requires several hundred hours of repetitive gameplay in order to get is the very definition of a gear grind. Take the fanboi glasses off.

Where did I say it wasn’t a grind? It sure as hell is a grind, that is another problem, but it isn’t a gear treadmill.

Its making a very good impersonation of a gear treadmill if its not one, kind not sure how you cant see its a gear treadmill to be honest..

At the moment it’s simply a gear road and Anet have just extended it a bit. It seems like Anets goal is just slightly longer endgame stat progression, not necessarily continuous stat progression, but who knows, it very well could turn into a treadmill, but currently it’s not and I doubt it ever will.

1. Anet said before that they didn’t like how they introduced Ascended gear. They’re working on making ascended gear more than just a fractal grind. I can’t find the actual post, but what was said was something along the lines of “We don’t want people only doing Fractals to obtain Ascended”.

2. I really don’t understand these “Why is it so hard to make money!?” or “Why do Anet not want us to gain gold?” posts, maybe I’m just missing something here. I made around 11g (5g w/o lucky drops) yesterday, just by logging in and casually playing for 2-3 hours.

Besides, what do you NEED gold for anyway? Ascended gear? Until they’re needed to be viable outside of the fractals(Which probably won’t ever happen I might add), I really don’t really see the gold rates as a problem.

3. Said before, but the game IS still very new.

Concurrent players doesn’t really mean much for a B2P game with “No endgame” (In other words you don’t HAVE to log in to attend something like a raid for instance).

The game is very much play when you want to play, which is far from a bad thing.

But to answer your question

- WvW is usually full on very high – full servers.

- Mists is fairly lacking in players, mainly due to people waiting on ranking and such (Which is to be implemented in the January/February updates).

- Most zones have enough players from what I’ve seen (Server is Gandara, very high pop).

- Dungeon-wise, fractals is dominating LA map chat, going to be a challenge to find anything other than that for a while.

Jeez, how are people STILL so misinformed.. This game was never meant to have endgame like WoW’s or Evequest’s (Hence the hate on a very small stat boost from ascended gear).

Don’t try and make it out to be a flaw, It’s simply just a different style of endgame, I for one prefer an optional cosmetic grind over a required stat grind.

Leveling a grind? First time hearing this, at 80 I was actually disappointed that it was over, by far that most enjoyable MMO leveling experience I’ve had.

I don’t really understand how you don’t care about leveling quickly YET you see it as a grind. I’m guessing by “Grind” you actually mean it’s just boring in general? In that case, similar to what other people have said, just explore the world, go for map/world completion, play the auction house, find a guild, try and find the right race/class for you, stumble across events, discover secret chests and jumping puzzles, try out the personal story or WvW, do a bit of crafting, possibly get into the lore etc etc.

There are more than enough options, just remember that it’s only a grind if you make it a grind.

why are people complaining ?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ironcloud.3892

I don’t understand why people are so upset… It’s ONE new tier with fairly minor stat upgrades! Not several with the previous being required to get the next tier up. Start complaining and calling it a “gear treadmill” when/if Anet start releasing new tiers (which are required to be viable) every other month.

How is GW2 like “Whack-a-mole” and WoW not? They’re exactly the same in that respect, you stun where a stun is needed/move out of the fire etc, but instead of just looking at a cast bar and CCing you have to judge what your opponent is doing by his animations which is FAR more skill based.

Also dodging and movement whilst casting. That adds a whole other level.
