Tequatl Rising - finally a worthy challenge!

I know that, as a player base, we will gradually become more and more effective at fighting the dragon until we begin to bring it down repeatedly. What falls short here is clear to me — it’s player familiarity. There are so many threats that play a factor in this fight now that players of all skill levels must grow completely re-accustomed to the whole boss fight formula. I’m very confident that we will see players beginning to overcome once the majority of players figure out how to survive all the threats the dragon poses and can then start to focus more and more on actually dealing damage.

You have more faith in the average player his skill and learning capacities than me. I think it MIGHT get downed a few times on my server after the less motivated people have given up on the event, but I feel that it might get abandoned quickly after the initial clears.

I could be wrong, time will tell.

Has any of you guys actually done Liadri or SaB TM? That was challenging content. This one would be great when instanced and doing with a raid group. Right now you have little control over who joins the fight and how willing they are to actually try.

Perhaps you are on an all english server with willing and able people? Guess what, a lot of us aren’t. No one is actually complaining about the content being too hard, you are missing the point so badly that this argument would be an airball if it was a basketball shot.

Somewhere around 60% at UW. Language barriers and casual attitude make this nigh impossible at the moment. Like someone else mentioned, I think the language specific servers (seeing als they also perform better at WvW) might have the best shot at downing him here in Europe.

Engineer and mesmer (When played at high levels) are two of the least passive classes in the game.

That’s why I’m asking for opinions, because I simply don’t know. Mesmer does feel somewhat passive or indirect though, with the phantasms having to do your bidding.

The major problem the EU has is the language barrier. There are a lot of non-english speakers on EU servers and attempting to co-ordinated when people dont even understand basics like the language your typing in or speaking defeats the purpose.

The problem is excaserbated by the fact that people whos second or third language is english play on english speaking servers. Meaning we cant even gaurantee that our home servers have people who cant talk to one another and communicate properly.

Its going to take one of the big guilds to knuckle down and essentially force out players from the server who dont speak the same language well enough, AND those who are AFK etc before its done this side of the pond.

This has proven a major problem in WvW aswell. When it’s on a smaller scale, language specific guilds are a solution. Just look at the top 10 in WvW in Europe. 7/10 of the top servers are language specific servers while only 50% of the total servers are actually language specific.

I remember before I quit for 8 months, we started an alliance of great guilds on our server. When on teamspeak I couldn’t understand half of the other guild leaders

I have to admit I’m disappointed in you BG. You used TS to coordinate the teq fight. All the other servers are pugging it like how it was ment to be played. BG may have been the first to beat him, but having the coordination over TS is an unfair advantage over other servers who can’t get so many people in a voice chat. Beat the event with pugs like how all the other servers are playing it and how it was designed to be played and then I’d consider it the actual world first.

That coordination over TS is what makes us good at WvW, and not it’s what makes us good at PvE. TS is something that’s as readily available to the people on your server as it is to the people on my server. And let’s be clear, the TS helped coordinate our community, but it was the community’s willingness to work together that won the day.

Let’s be clear, that TS is as available on my server as it is on yours, but the willingness to work together is not so readily available over here. You have been on a high ranked WvW server too long and you seem to think that by individual engagement and spirit you can actually force people to participate the way you want them to. Guess what, those people that are willing to participate have been flocking to your server for ages now, they are in rare supply on most other servers. That’s what guilds are for over here.

Yet you don’t pick the people on your server, so that willingness to coordinate really isn’t something you can just cultivate on every server. Good for you that you are playing on a server where everyone is so willing and able, but it’s not like that for all of us and you should really stop acting like it’s something which can happen by sheer power of will.

I’m happy you guys managed to kill it and it seemed like a lot of fun, but don’t come here and act all high and mighty in response towards something which is clearely a silly troll attempt.

Anyways, I’m just dissapointed that the accessibility of this content is out of my control since I was looking forward to it.

Would be great to experience something like this, but I refuse to switch server. I’ve had plenty of Boss kill races back when I played WoW. It was always fun when things went well, but that required you to have a coordinated group to even enter. At this point, you just have to work with a bunch of random people, most of them don’t even have TS or don’t really care about changing anything to make this fight possible.

So I’m done trying for now.

If it can be done why ask for nerfs?
If it gets nerfed ppl won’t learn to play better and remain bad.
A suggestion from me would be to kick whoever afks for more than 2 mins while the event is active.

You cant kick anyone from the map. If he is there, he is there to stay. AFK or not. When you are in a guild or other group, you can filter your squad to perform better. In world events you cant. You are only as good as the bulk of your zerg can be. So whats the next recipe for sucessful PvE? All zerg transfer to Blackgate (and probably ruining it in the process)?

I’m sure its possible to do a script that checks if player is in range of the group event and if he’s not active for the past 2 mins then get him to character selection screen so someone else can enter the main area.

What about a script which detects who is not adjusting to the tactic and doing something wrong? In group instanced environment you can see who is standing in fire and not take him to subsequent attempts. In GW2 world bosses best thing you can do is rage on map chat. And with amount of people involved at Tequilla, you will more often than not not even see who is doing something wrong. The boss itself is fine. It’s reliance on random zerglings is not.

I am playing MMO-s way to long to understand what is the general quality of players. Lets assume I am good at the game or at least I think I am. If there is a challenging content to deal with, I can perhaps apply to a guild which does it and if I am good enough, I may have a shot at passing their trial and being accepted into the group. Now lets even assume I am the best GW2 player ever. What is my bet on doing Tequall other than being on the right server at the right day at the right hour? All I can do otherwise is rage on map chat trying to educate people and half of them wont listen anyway.

This times a thousand. Allthough I don’t rage on map chat because I realise how futile it is. Not that many people still trying it on my server anyway. Last attempt was with about 20 people and it didn’t feel like it was downscaled all that much.

Advice on which class to play

in Thief

Posted by: Ivonbeton.6814

Ivonbeton.6814

I thought I would ask this in the thief forum because people who enjoy thief might enjoy what I enjoy to some extent.

So far I’ve only really leveled my guardian and thief. Been thinking about leveling a new alt but can’t really decide. I want something different from thief, but still versatile and original.

First I thought about warrior, but that seems way too straightforward to be fun in the long run. Then I was thinking about engineer or mesmer, but they seem a bit passive in their playstyle. So I ended up with elementalist, but an elementalist is (just like a thief) a bit squishy and at a bad place at the moment.

Any thoughts or advice on what you enjoy and why?

Actually i think the amount of leadership involved isnt much more than what it takes to knock over a tower in wvw, maybe a BL keep… also part of the time factor would include (hopefully) a mostly androgynous plan that is spread and used across many servers. I don’t expect this to work first few times, there will basically always be someone having first time issues, but i envision it being at least where enough still know what’s going on to get it done.. grenth is the current best example of this, but when the right people run the karka queen or you get that orgainized party of 5 or so carrying the zerg to victory during the escort phase of balth, they make it look real easy

Knocking over a tower in WvW is fairly straightforward, something everyone can handle. A lot of people just run behind a commander and spam autoattack.

Exactly. I think those people from blackgate coming on here saying how it’s going well on their server seem to forget that they are probably on the ONE server in GW2 with the biggest concentration of PvE freaks.

…It’s not an insult. .

For what its worth “freak” is often, perhaps even usually, a pejorative term.

I could have used “fanatics” but that also has a pejorative connotation. Really, it’s all in the eyes of the beholder.

Let me put it this way then…it’s not far comparing any other server to Blackgate, since they’ve broken every PvE record in the game. They’re literally the #1 server for PvE content, and are the ones to make every tip, every exploit, everything possible for the bosses widespread. However them almost beating it in 15 minutes should tell the admin we need 25-30…since the slowest servers always take about double the time as Blackgate (and that’s not an insult, they’re just that good!).

Well yeah, that’s what I was implying aswell. They shouldn’t be the standard and I get annoyed by the elitists coming on here saying otherwise and feeling superior simply for being on Blackgate.

I actually like being on a server with all kinds of people on it. If I would want to do harder content, I should find myself a group of like minded people and not have to count on the average mentality and skill of the entire server.

You say that as an insult, yet our server is better than yours in WvW too. “All kinds of people” indeed.

It’s not an insult. Funny how you turned that around and even added to it. I’m from a European server, so I can’t really comment on your WvW status. All I was saying is that just because your server has a better average level of coordination and skill, that it doesn’t mean it’s fair to the rest of us.

Highly ranked servers also work like a magnet to other motivated people who have no quarrel with leaving their server. Seen it in WoW, see it here. I have no problem with that, seeing as I enjoy PvE more than a WvW competition where the individual or small scaled teamplay has little to no impact. It’s just a bit unfair when it comes to events like this. I like doing all the hard content, but unlike your server, mine has a lot of more relaxed and “casual” players on it. It doesn’t make you ‘better’ or your server ‘better’ than mine, it just makes the content unavailable for a lot of us.

I supposed to be hard. If this is meant to be GW2’s version of a raid, it needs to be hard and it needs to test the server’s ability to coordinate and work together. Being from Blackgate, that’s easy for me to say, but God knows there’s enough easy content in this game already…let’s keep this one the way it is for now.

I have no problems with hard content. I have problems with hard content being done in public.

Hard content like this should be reserved for large well coordinated groups.

Exactly. I think those people from blackgate coming on here saying how it’s going well on their server seem to forget that they are probably on the ONE server in GW2 with the biggest concentration of PvE freaks.

Lowest I’ve seen him was around 75%

It’s great that some servers with a lot of people with time to spare can act organized, but for most of us it’s pointless to even try. When we got him to 75% atleast half the people on the map were genuinely trying, but trying to convince the other half is just impossible.

It’s like raiding (and not that great of a raid considering there are things that oneshot you and can not be avoided) without getting to pick who comes to the raid, no raiding tools (e.g a big group interface) and little ways of communicating. If anyone remembers their first Molten core visit in WoW with everyone still in blue gear? Now take away half the raid and replace them by people jumping in the lava. Feels a bit pointless on my server.

Fantastic idea, but you overdone it.

1) Removing the risen fishheads would be a great first step. It’s not fun being one-shotted multiple times (in Heavy lvl 80 Valk exotic/ascended gear) by something you often cannot see and that shows a red AoE circle only AFTER you are dead. Kitten, I died just running from the closest wp to the hylek cannons.

2) The closest wp should not be contested during the event IMO. It just encourages dead players to give up and go do something else instead of quickly returning to the fight.

Solid suggestions.

Fair point. Something I’ve wondered aswell. I love to do difficult content with a selected group of people who are atleast as motivated as me to progress. It feels a bit random to try and do difficult content with a few hundred randoms who die at every turn and will continue to do so no matter how many times they do the event.

in Tequatl Rising

The problem is that it’s a world event. I love difficult content, but I found it more frustrating when you are depending on the average player to do well. It’s like doing a free-for-all 300 man raid with little communication.

You wrongfully assume that people are complaining about the difficulty, the problem is the difficulty in a free-for-all event. I hope it gets better when people learn the encounter, but you will always have that uncontrollable aspect of random people trying to work together.

If this is what the future holds, people will even start changing servers just to be on a “dragon kill” server :p

The class they left behind

in Engineer

Posted by: Ivonbeton.6814

Ivonbeton.6814

Engineers seem to be in a pretty good place. One of the reasons I’ve started leveling one is because I’ve seen a lot of people play completely different builds that all work fairly well. My current main is a thief and it’s been getting whined at for over a year now, so it’s being constantly nerfed and reduced to a few gimmicky builds/playstyles.

So maybe it’s just perception, but I started leveling an engineer exactly because they seem to be at a sort of sweet spot when it comes to balance. Perhaps less so in PvE and more for WvW or PvP in general.

Regarding Stealth and its "Concerns"

in Thief

Posted by: Ivonbeton.6814

Ivonbeton.6814

WoW had a nice stealth feature. When a stealthed character approached, you had a chance to hear and vaguely see them.

But I don’t feel like thief or stealth are anywhere near OP at the moment. Perma stealthing might be a bit too easy and it’s a bit too easy to reset fights or to get away as a thief, but it doesn’t seem like thieves are dominating in sPvP, tPvP or even PvE. Even in WvW, despite being fairly good and wanted, they are not THE class to play. In the current state it feels like any nerf to stealth would seriously jeopardize any class balance that is left.

So I’m not too sure where all these topics are coming from? I would love to see a modest thief overhaul, but an overhaul which makes the class more viable in every aspect of the game. Those complaints/suggestions seem to stem from a different perspective. Not really concerned with the state of the thief, but more with how annoying it is to play against.

I know, but after doing this it’s still very random if I get past the cloud without dieing. Sometimes I aggro him too soon and sometimes he hits me eventhough I evade. Only once have I made it past him from the first go.

You can get perma swiftness (15% boon duration) and a 25% speed boost with runes of the traveler with only 10 points in acrobatics. On top of that it has 3/6 divinity stats. I was thinking that the 25% boost would be great for any build and that it would make the already mobile thief even more mobile.

Something with perma swiftness (or near perma swiftness) through acrobatics (+withdraw) and the trait which removes movement impairement when dodging.

I’m not sure which weapon set would be best for this. I’ll probably have to take a maximum of 15 in SA and perhaps even 0. I think it would work wonders with either S/P or backstab builds. Might even make D/D more viable if played right.

It’s subjective, not imaginary. For example, to protect yourself from the absurd knockback physics, you can learn to conduct battles in more advantageous locations, and put your back to a wall. At this point, though, it certainly feels like you’re fighting the design more than you’re fighting the enemy, who is otherwise not so threatening.

Whether you choose to acknowledge it or not, people are able to perceive the causes of difficulty differently, because in fact the causes are different. You are seriously underestimating players if you think we can’t tell the difference between something that is hard because the enemies are hard and something that is hard because gameplay is broken.

So fighting the design doesn’t qualify as difficulty? This would mean that one jumping puzzle is as easy as the next because there are no difficult enemies. And what does broken gameplay even mean? You don’t die in TM world 2 if you do what you are supposed to do, it’s just that doing what you are supposed to do can be quite hard. I do admit there is a certain element of RNG involved, but by now I can run through any zone in TM fairly fast. I haven’t played everyday and I still managed to get 3 storm wizard skins so far. Only my first run was really brutal. This would mean the gameplay is broken for you, but not for me and most of my friends. Did I miss out on a patch?

On a sidenote, you should dodge jump anything with knockbacks. That’s the best (and I assume it’s the intended) way of dealing with those “absurd knockbacks”.

And why not skill? Is it not skill to learn how to adapat fast and perform a series of difficult, precise tasks in a row without failing? Don’t you think that people who are less good at this will have a harder time and will thus give up easier or not finish it?

Sure, but what you just described need not involve a game in any fashion. You could just as easily test your skills in basket weaving in such a way. When you are using video games as a medium, the expectation is for it to have solid gameplay mechanics first, and then worry about difficulty after.

So now being good at basket weaving isn’t being skilled? Isn’t basket weaving a skill by definition? A skilled artisan is someone who takes something which is difficult at first and hones it over years of training to become better at it.

I’m pleased and proud that I’m now a better ‘jumper’ than I was before and that I’m getting more yellow skins than the next one for being good at it. I’m sorry, but you can’t take that away from me.

And if we could take it away from you, would you still be playing?

Well you can’t, I’m a better at this than I was before and I enjoy beating it and trying to beat it even faster and smoother. How would you even take that experience away from me? Poison me or hypnotize me?

I see a lot of frustrated players who got turned down by the steep learning curve (and yes it is a very time consuming and steep learning curve). And try to convince themselves and others that they only die because the design and gameplay are so bad. Meanwhile I’m teaching guildies to do these TM zones and I can tell you that I have little problems guiding some of the worst ‘jumpers’ in my guild through most of the content. Only the last two zones are of a different category and I can only take the better players there.

EDIT: In response to the above comment, I’m closing in on 30 and I grew up aroudn uncles who were obsessed by games. So yes, I have played older games.

Honestly, with all the drops you get from champions now… you can easily, easily buy the infinite coin with gems from converted gold. This ‘muuu it’s pay to win’ nonsense is laughably simple minded. You don’t understand what p2w is.

Agreed. I’ve played APB, now that was P2W

So I haven’t had a crash since I stopped doing invasions. I was getting bluescreen GPU errors while those were going on. But now I have a different problem.

When I launch the game about over 50% of the time I just get a black screen. I can’t even terminate the process because if I try to CTRL+ALT+DEL anything windows related is just flikkering through the black screen, but it’s impossible to actually do anything. So over 50% of the time I’m forced to manually restart my PC.

Anyone else getting this? Any advice? My drivers had a full and clean install and I don’t run into any problems with other games. I have a nvidea GTS 250 card and 320.x drivers.

I’m loving it. It’s great to have some challenges like this and Liadri. I quit for 8 months because I felt like I had nothing to do. So I’d like to thank those who made it!

Who are you trying to convince that you don’t HAVE to do TM because it has cheap mechanics and there is no actual skill or fun involved? Us or yourself? It’s true that you most likely need a infinite coin to do tribulation mode unless you want to grow old farming bubbles. Allthough it might be doable with normal coins now that there are guides out, it’s still can save you a major headache if you just get the infinite coin.

I for one really enjoyed TM. I also found it a shame that they nerfed w2z1, I enjoyed trying to race through that part as fast as I could without getting knocked down. Sure you have to know where to go and how to go there, but that’s just called a learning process. It’s how all games work and when you get punished hard for not knowing what to do (yet) or not being able to do it, it’s called difficulty.

This division you make between supposedly “mechanical difficulty” and “real difficulty” is imaginary. It’s still a testament of patience and persistence if you managed to finish world 2 TM. And why not skill? Is it not skill to learn how to adapat fast and perform a series of difficult, precise tasks in a row without failing? Don’t you think that people who are less good at this will have a harder time and will thus give up easier or not finish it?

I’ve been helping my friends get past world one and I can get even the worst of them through most of it, but some of them will (even with my guidance) not be able to complete world two without breaking their face on the wall. I’ve managed to go through w2z3 in a reasonable time my first try with a friend and since then I’ve been able to do the entire world rather fast in TM. I’m pleased and proud that I’m now a better ‘jumper’ than I was before and that I’m getting more yellow skins than the next one for being good at it. I’m sorry, but you can’t take that away from me.

I get my fun out of content like this or Liadri, I hate farming gold to get a legendary or ascended weapon and I’m not sure if I ever will do that. I stopped playing for 8 months and things like this drew me back in.

EDIT: I actually enjoyed doing half of the zones without a guide because I had to try and think my way out of seemingly impossible situations.
