Remove Edge of the Mists

How about no? I don’t even like WvW and I can see that this idea is utterly stupid. Why remove/restrict the only semi-decent map among the WvW maps?

Lolwut? Essentially what you mean is you don’t like pvp so please dont take away my easymode pvd grindfest.

I dislike eotm because generally the people there can’t handle the fact that the game mode is pvp and do their best to avoid any form of combat. Which makes it incredibly boring to play… If I want to grind for gold I’ll go do some pve content that actually requires an iota of skill to do thanks.

I think I only saw like 8-10 Viz players last night in EB, this was at like 11pm-1am

Everything was either red or blue!

So question is, how are Viz 20k ahead of Piken, and 25k ahead of Gunnars?!

Skill and tactics? :P

Night capping

How is any of this a solution to the problem?

Clearly it rewards the side that is the better fighters… and it discourages servers who are crap from running into the safety of their heavily sieged objectives. If you’ll only fight us inside siege range, then fine we’ll go kill something else… no points for you!!
I think it’s a very interesting and well thought out idea personally.

Sword changes already affecting game play

It’s perfectly possible to take keeps with a small group. All you need is some level of coordination with the bigger groups. Hit the objective you want to take at the same time another group is hitting something else. Alternatively if you have your (or even an enemy) zerg bogged down at the south gate take your smaller one to the north gate and see if you can sneak in behind. Maybe it’s different in T1, but if you’re struggling then there’s already a solution… transfer to the lower tiers. God knows we could use the people. If not then it just requires a bit of tactical thinking to increase your thinking

As someone who plays WvW in pretty much every way (Solo Roaming, small group roaming, zerging, scouting, upgrading) I can only see this change being a horrible one. I also come from a server which has very good scouts, especially considering our position and size. This change will only help servers with more people and will make upgrading even less rewarding and more frustrating than it already is.

When I scout part of the job I do is also upgrade the camps nearby and run dolyaks in to help speed up the upgrading. I don’t want to be in the situation where i know that everytime i need to fight someone to save a dolyak im risking losing the whole keep over it because i cant check the map to see if i have to disengage. Likewise i don’t want to know that as soon as i need to go eat all my work will be for nothing because our server just doesn’t have the manpower to replace me and any attack wont be noticed.

Another alternative is to run Phalanx Strength build. This gives you the extra Vitality from 6 into Tactics. Then on your utilities take endure pain and dolyak signet. The latter will give you extra DR while the former speaks for itself. Using sword offhand with your axe not only gives you good dps from torment and rip but also has a handy block. If you’re worried about condi try Hoelbrak runes instead of Strenght/Scholar for the – condi duration. Extra might from that is nice too. Then you can take healing food – I personally use Slice of Candied Dragon Roll which combined with my 100% crit chance (only with Fury and Banner of discipline) gives me healing 2/3 of my hits.

From then it’s just a question of learning the paths you do in fractals and dungeons, and knowing when to block/dodge/endure pain. Eventually you’ll get good enough that you won’t need to take Dolyak signet at all

The continuity and immersion in this story is terrible not only for new and returning players but also when making new characters. It just dumps you straight in to the same spot with these people who really if you just play PS and then go onto LS2 you should have never met. Likewise on my Asuran engineer I made a month or so back i 100%ed the Grove and decided to see what was up with the Pale Tree after the last patch. In our conversation she referred to me as the hero who killed Scarlet. This character was only a few hours old and level 30 something – definitely did not kill Scarlet.

When LS2 came out I tried to get my friend who’d left the game a year or so ago without really playing LS1 at all to come back for the story. He plays RPGs for the story and was so unimpressed with the dodgy immersion from all this in episode 1 he hasn’t been back.

Sorting this out needs time and resources from Anet sure, but its driving players away and should definitely be addressed imo. Even if it’s just a cinematic from an NPC in LA that anyone can watch to catch up on the events of S1

Yeah I don’t think any of the new races or the human Gods knew about the dragons when they arrived in Tyria tbh. They were just attracted to the magic that leaked out of them, hence the location of places such as Arah and the Central Transfer Chamber

Just ran the Quaggan Paddle rush in Frostgorge. The Rush completed and the option to accept it came up on my screen so I pressed accept. Waited the for the rush to end and the same thing happened. Speaking on /say other guilds here also having the same problem.

The rush rewarded commendations and the chest but no merits.

And yes I am aware I said instance. This is purely because I am a fan of instance over open world (-:

But why?

That is a much more important question. It’s Anet who talks about a living and breeding world. Open world guild-halls (and housing) that people can build them-self will be able to do that. Even more so then dynamic events and the living world.

An instance makes is less interesting and more put away, in addition it’s out of the game in a way, or better said it’s out of the game-world.

I very strongly urge you to actually go try Archeage, which has open world housing as a primary feature.
tldr; it can be an absolute nightmare, and in practice the only real benefit is “oh look, I can see some random guy’s house/some random guy can see my house”, and “haha I ganked you on your farm” (in Archeage’s case, it’s an open world pvp game).
Unless Anet can guarantee a plot per player, it’s going to cause some pretty ugly situations and some very jaded players. And they’d likely have to do so without introducing vast expanses of open space, or cluttering the normal maps’ skies with airships that people have to render, if they want it to look any kind of reasonable.
When you’ve spent a week looking for a plot, any plot, to build on to no avail, or when your beautiful house gets neighbors that block out your nice view or build something that aesthetically looks like trash to you and clashes with your house, you get a lot less enthusiastic about the “open world” part of housing.

Instanced housing/guild halls that can have some sort of interaction with outside forces (gvg being a popular one, but it could include other things like the ability to make the hall open to the public and having events within) would, I feel, be far more conductive to community interaction while circumventing the real estate issues entirely.

I’ll say it again for anyone on the side of “open world housing”. Go try Archeage and see what Open World Housing is actually like in practice. I’m not saying it’s entirely bad, but a reality check on what it actually entails in practice is always a good thing.

Completely agree. Open World Guild Halls are yuck

Surely if/when alliances are introduced have them similar to GW1 again where any member of an alliance can access another’s Guild Hall.

Alternatively set the upgrade status of the Alliance Hall to that of the net Guild Halls. I.e if two guilds are in an alliance and guild 1 has upgrades x,y&z on their guild hall and guild 2 has upgrades a,b&c on theirs then the alliance hall has upgrades x,y,z,a,b&c. This would allow smaller guilds access to the things bigger guilds do earlier while their own hall is still developing at a slower rate. Skins would require a separate suggestion – maybe a vote open over a certain time period or something

Imo the Guild Hall design in GW1 was perfect. A seperate instance mapped to from the Guild panel and also functions as a GvG map. Then you can buy upgrades from the Guild Lord – these would be bank, tp, merchant, repair, crafting, MF etc.

These could have an associated Gold, influence and merit score attributed to them. Even small guilds can get those, and provided the costs arent over the top everyone should be able to max out their guild halls.

Another question that needs addressing is what is the optimum server size during a matchup? This will be very difficult to get right imo. Is it 24 hour queues on all maps? If so how long a queue? Too long and guilds will lose interest because they can’t raid and too small will see imbalances creep back in. Likewise non wvw active players within the alliance are going to skew things massively if not accounted for but then if they decide to come back into wvw it could make things difficult

Jimmy JimBob.2801

John’s idea is interesting, could be tweaked a bit but it will surely give some variety to WvW (staleness is as bad as imbalance).

Each guild can be part of an alliance (that could even be formed by a single guild) and alliances are clustered together during off season, as per scheme John proposed, in order to have the same WvW players base.
In case a guild is not interest in WvW it will be a “freelance” and its player would act as a filler (more on that later).
Freelance guild status could work for all the PvE and PvP oriented guilds.

Regarding multi guild, let’s say everybody has to pick a primary guild (as proposed in guilds CDI) and they can play only for the alliance of said guild, its other side guild has to be “freelance” or still member of the same alliance.
If a player wants to leave a guild and its alliance, has to wait the new match up to join with the new guild.

Regarding freelance players: they can work as “filler” and be randomly assigned to a matchup each week. Of course this could rise an issue with siege trolls, so freelance could be limited on their siege deploys (like in a real battle you would give those “sellswords” less important tasks).
If a freelance player wants to join a guild, he can do that and the next week he will be part of the alliance. So recruitment during WvW will have some significance, as each week you could have different potential new player.
And people looking for different stuff can stay “freelance” for a bit a looking for a new guild and alliance to join.

Basically, any player interested in WvW will be part of some alliance. Any other joining randomly will be just an added militia useful for a PUG zerg.

It definitely needs some tweaking, but all in all I like it, I see more good than bad.

And for PvE: alliances will take the World as a parameter for assign you to a specific map, so no change with megaserver, you’ll still play with your community
There’s also good potential for RP.

It’s not so black and white as this though. You’re assuming first of all here that there are 3 types of player: Those who play only PvE, those whole play only PvP and those who only play WvW. There are many players (myself included) who enjoy all forms of the game and classify as PvX and who mingle with all types of player whether they be PvX themselves or prefer to play only one format. In your system we would be dumped into the freelance category, have horribly restrictions and be alienated from the communities that have been a huge part of our GW2 playing experience thus far.

Likewise I know a number of “freelance” wvw only players who for whatever reason prefer not be in a guild of any size yet play a huge part in the wvw community. These are often the men/women who do the difficult and unappreciated work like upgrading, defending camps (and structures during quiet hours), escorting dolyaks and scouting incidentally.

I really hope that if this change is implemented it considers this and doesn’t just pander to the big raiding guilds. In fact I’d be in favour of the alliance system being independent of the guild system completely. Just make it essentially a non-rep guild with a much larger player cap than the guild system but limited to 1 per person.

As for the scoring issue I think this implementation could actually work to fix the problems within the existing one. I personally think that, population imbalances aside, the 24/7 system is the most enjoyable so getting it to work would be better to finding a lesser version.

If within the alliance system there was a way to find the alliance (wvw) activity %s by time period, preferably automated but manually if necessary, and that was made the prime method of sorting which alliance works with who then that solves a huge problem. Especially considering total world population is a very naive method to cap the server population given you could end up with huge timezone skews that way

Solution to fix the population imbalance

Posted by: Jimmy JimBob.2801

Jimmy JimBob.2801

I’m undecided on this. I am absolutely against breaking up the existing communities within WvW. But in order to implement the apparent megaserver vision into this format this could be a decent compromise depending on the answer to some questions I have. I apologise if these have been asked already – I’ve only skimmed this thread.

Firstly we really need to know the alliance size limit compared to the size of the existing communities. If the alliance limit is smaller than the community size then it won’t work – and bear in mind that there will be Guilds whose leadership play an active role in the community but who’s members don’t so any implementation will have to account for this.

Secondly how will the cap work? Is it based on number of people or number of guilds? If it’s the former what happens when a large guild contains a number of inactives – will they count towards the cap? Or what happens if a small guild expands taking the number of people over the alliance limit? If it’s the latter does that mean a desired alliance between a large number of small guilds forces them to merge? And will that not provide a barrier to the smaller guilds being accepted into alliances in the first place. This is also very important for PvX guilds who have wvw players that belong to a community and PvE players who don’t care for the format at all but could have a negative impact on the communities ability to stick together.

Thirdly how do people who belong to multiple guilds decide who they’ll be repping in wvw? It seems silly that if they represent two guilds in separate alliances on competing sides of the same matchup they’ll be able to flit between them as they choose, and conversely if the guild system changes so that you can only be apart of guilds within the same alliances that will only break up communities not help them stick together – especially for PvE only guilds and players. One solution I see would be you choose your alliance at the start of each section (as laid out in John’s post)r and have to pay a small gem fee to transfer similar to the way server transfer works now. This is difficult though due to the fluid nature of guilds and alliances, but I guess players who leave alliances could remain on the same ‘server’ until the next switch up. It also allows communities to set up non rep guilds purely for alliance purposes.

Finally how are individual players/small guilds who can’t get themselves into an alliance going to be dealt with? The big danger I worry about with this is the small guy get’s dumped on for not being part of a large guild

My guess is either a 15-25 zone, or a 25-35 zone if they want to seriously expand the map westwards. We only have one 15-25 map for both the Sylvari and the Asura and no 25-35 map. This is something all the other 3 races have.

Personally I would retain much of the current system. I would revamp the REWARD system totally.

Rather then rewarding the top 3 servers with ever increasing rewards , I would remove that concept entirely. Finishing first would mean nothing more then bragging rights and no more in the way of rewards.

What I would base rewards on instead is the meta-achievement completed (it may need tweaking) along with a system that tracks WXP points earned while in WvW.

Thus if you were on Eredon Terrace and complete the meta achievement and earned 30000 wxp while in game or if you were on Jade Quarry and earned the same 30000 wxp while completing the meta-achievement you would get the same reward.

Now there an advantage here earning WXP on a more populated server. I would redo the outnumbered buff so as to make WXP earned by servers with a much lower population even greater.

I would keep the system that saw a cap on the number of players in game.

This would give lower populated servers a specific advantage in that they could always get into the game to earn WXP. The higher populated servers would likely see queues. This would mean less time in the game as those on the lower populated servers earn WXP.

I agree with improving rewards based on the completion of a weekly meta achievement. – I think certainly on my server I’ve noticed an improved drive this week with the fight coming down to getting better rewards.

However having the rewards gained based on WXP will only further drive the game toward karma training and push more people out of normal wvw and into eotm. those of us who play to win and put in hours of scouting, dolyak escorting and upgrading will again be left without any recompense for it.

An idea I like is having it based on results in the matchup and have a weekly meta acheiv that runs a bit like the LS ones do where you either complete X number of these achievements or do the wvw dailies in that week to qualify. Then you get a small number of tickets, wexp, karma and gold for completing the meta based on your servers performance that week. If the matchup system is fluid enough you’ll get a decent spread of rewards across time… unless you’re in the very bottom server. then you can use the tickets as another currency like laurels and trade the in for unid dyes, ascended gear, level ups etc. for a small number of tokens, or save up and eventually get a weapon skin

As someone who’s never transferred and played since pre-release I can tell you that to me this question is silly. It’s not loyalty to a piece of hardware that houses where you play – aka the server I picked at random on release. It’s loyalty to the community that’s formed as a result of a group of people making that random choice which keeps me there.

Factions is the solution for the worst WvW problem: coverage wars. It can’t come soon enough.

If you want to see the collapse of the entire game, then sure.

I’m already watching the game collapse. That’s what puzzles me about the people trying to stand by server pride. Server after server collapsing, people jumping from server to server to stack them, and most matchups being a complete blowout. Yet server pride > the overall WvW health. Let’s continue with server pride though, it’s done a real bang up job so far!

Lol yeah that server pride excuse didn’t make sense when it was brought up in the CDI either, it’s pretty obvious by the way people jump ship for rewards that people generally don’t care about server pride as much as they try and act like they do. And the best part of any community is that you can rebuild or it can adapt to new members, it just takes time.

If they were to merge some servers today two months from now after the whining died down everything would be fine.

Just because some people and guilds transfer around and bounce from server to server doesn’t mean there aren’t those of us who do care. I’ve been on my server since early access, and know and still play with some of the same people since the start. I think of my server in the same way as my favourite sports teams, and when I can’t play due to RL commitments I still follow the scores and feel happy when we do well… in the same way I have some pretty strong feelings against other servers and guilds who we’ve had clashes with in the past. Forcing us to play with those same people would be like merging Manchester United with Manchester City for the good of english football.

If our servers are ripped apart then I probably won’t come back into wvw

My understanding is the LS and PS are running at pretty similar time periods? Hence LA changing during the PS quests.

To me therefore there should be a complete cut off with the PS and LS season 2. Whatever happens in that living story doesnt effect the PS and instanced maps frozen in time can be accessed for PS if the map is changed by the next LS updates. This would allow us to see what work the reformed Destiny’s Edge and everyone’s favourite Sylvari are doing post Zhaitan. I’m assuming the latter is helping to cleanse Orr, while DE go off on their dragon slaying adventures.
An idea I had which could allow this to happen is for Anet to realease a complete paid expansion with the start of the LS season 2. The expansion could deal with DE who go off and fight one dragon with a brand new PS system. This would replace the old one and all new characters created once this expansion has been bought would start on this new storyline. The way the level scaling works means it wouldn’t be a problem for those already at level 80, they could just skip the 0-20 quests. This would allow us to see changes to Orr as the corruption there fades/is cleansed.

It is of course purely academic as I imagine if we were to see a new expansion anytime soon it would have been announced formerly rather than just hinted at

I really hope the Captain’s Council get their comeuppance. Sure they played a big part in the evacuation and refugee efforts but it was their blind ignorance to the kitten obvious that caused the problems in the first place. Entirely reactive instead of proactive.

I also hope the sea gets drained allowing us to walk among the ruins of the old city. As a GW1 player swimming around it was cool, but actually seeing it properly on foot would be much better. We also don’t know what resulted in terms of damage from when the lay line energy was released. To me it looked like a pretty large explosion so even greater damage as a result of that would be realistic.

I don’t mind LA being rebuilt but I’d like it to be PC influenced, not scripted, and tailored better to suit the needs (and computers) of the players.

There were no other objectives, we owned hills and bay at the time, and even if they took them back we didnt care, those 2 were flipped from t3 to paper, all we wanted to do was remove the upgrades on garrison.

When VoTF set their raid the intention wasnt “get the highest ppt” it was simply, flip each keep once to remove upgrades.

So you failed in your objectives and then had a cry?

Thank you for making that hard fought victory so much sweeter

I wouldnt say we failed, I would actually call it quite the success with the amount of bags we farmed from it plus the amount of times the lords drop reset, that is worth something surely?

So why the need for all the QQ? Without those mechanics being as they were you wouldn’t have got anywhere near as many kills as you did and wouldn’t have collected anywhere near as much loot.
If you truly didn’t care about taking Garri then you should celebrate the mechanics that prolong your fights. If you did care then I’m sorry, but no matter how much fun you had collecting your loot you still ultimately failed in your goal.

And tbph none of this would be a point of discussion at all if your members hadn’t come onto the forums to have a cry in the first place

Cool story bro, you should tell that as a bed time story.

p.s, still doesn’t make the mechanic any more right.

With all the money i’ve put into upgrading, I’m a big fan of alot of the mechanics that help defenders. AFAIC all the worst bits of wvw are the ones that allow keeps/towers to be taken with no trouble at all. Like, for example 3 guilds trying to steamroll over a T3 garrison…

If you really are a guild that just plays for fights as you claim then you too should welcome a mechanic that prolongs the need for people to stick around and actually fight you.

Again, nobody from VoTF, literally nobody, cares about garrison or your attempts to defend/attack or your situation in the match up.

So, what is it you were doing in Garri then? Were you in there for the epic fights? With the other 2 guilds? Give us a break…

To everyone that doesn’t see the issue with this mechanic…I just feel sorry for you, all I can hope is wait till such an event happens to you and then see how much of a fail it is first hand, then if you still see no problem in it then yeah, there’s no hope for you.

Let me tell you a story. A few weeks ago RAGE, the guild leading the defence here, were running an open mic on community voice comms defending our bl. One of the opposing servers was giving us a hard time, so when we’d pushed them out we decided we’d try and go for their garri. We built golems and got to inner when they all wped in. We wiped them over and over but eventually after much wping and bannering of the lord we got beaten back. We all laughed and counted our loot bags and commented on what a great time we’d just had… and then took Bay.

Maybe you guys should stop whining about every little thing that goes against you? Or are warrior banners going to be the new acs?

Most of us in tonights Zerg were uplevelled. I think at the time of that screenie I, a level 21 necro, was in a party with a level 5 and a level 4 necro.

Just a bit of fun for the community. All in all we probably wiped more than we killed but its been a good laugh

First time in this matchup thread for me and I have to say I’m a little surprised with the way UW have come out attacking from the get go. I thought you’d be better than that.

Not had a chance to play yet but I’ve heard UW are strong so I look forward to going against your zergs

Gunnar’s, just a question. Is it always like this or is this mainly because of Reset? Because wow you got alot of people XD.

Just reset. Our numbers fluctuate massively but yeh resets are usually pretty strong

Because the Gw2 Forum transforms the human Hindquarters into Kittens. Please don’t think any further why that Part of the Humanbody should somehow be linked to Cats.

Hmmm… I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt here but I’m watching you
