Rewards as incentive is a community issue, not developer

People don’t play ONLY for rewards. It has to be fun with the rewards. Look at Borderlands. The game itself is fun for a while, but imagine playing it with only 1 set of guns? Not so fun anymore. The fact that at any time you can find a bigger and better gun makes everything you do in that game MORE fun. They NAILED it completely and have the sales to prove it. Obviously Borderlands isn’t GW2, but the reward system is top notch. They “get it”.

I personally would never run any dungeon more than a handful of times, but I especially won’t do it if the reward is just a different skin. No way. And lots of people think like me. Probably most. If Anet just wants people to play for a month or two then leave until the next expansion, the got their wish, because that’s what basically is happening.

I agree with you on the “lots of people think like me”, but not on the “Probably most”.

The rewards here are skins and will ever be skins. If it isn’t enough for you, I’m sorry to say that it won’t change. This is their concept for a gameplay model. They know they will never be able to please everyone.

Maybe “most” is pushing as far as PvPers go. For people who love PvE, skins are NOT going to cut it over the long haul. Count on it. Having crazy gear gaps in PvP is not smart. That makes sense. PvP should just be about skins.

But with PvE, you’re not competing with other players. You’re playing with them, so you having better gear doesn’t really effect anyone besides wanting to know where you got it so they can get it too. Unless you’re hardcore, you’re not running a dungeon 50+ times for a skin, especially as imbalanced as it is right now. If the gear was a tier better, THEN people might be more motivated. I’m not saying make it easy either. Frustrating isn’t all that much fun and there’s a fine line between difficult and frustrating.

Why can’t all the minion traits be in one line, all the well traits be in another, vampiric-style in another, ect? Still makes no sense what so ever how traits that have nothing to do with one another are in the same place. It should be intuitive and OBVIOUS which traits to take after a play style is chosen. All this guesswork with taking a little here or there and maybe this or that will work. There should be NO guessing. I don’t get why they didn’t build everything the ways it should be.

Its like Skyrim. You play to max level, see as much of the world as you want and you’re done. Anything you do after that has no real rewards, because there’s nothing else to do and nothing really to gain. Create another character and do it again. There’s your $60. Put the game down for a few months and wait for an expansion. There’s another $35. That’s it.

I don’t think Anet had any intention of trying to hold onto PvE players much longer than a character or 2. Only the hardcore PvPers will bang their heads against a wall for months on end, essentially not accomplishing anything new. I think the PvE is very well done on its surface, but there is no long term plans to hold onto players unless you’re an alt-aholic.

I see no reason to do a dungeon more than once after reading the feedback. I didn’t mind doing dungeons over and over again in WOW, because I knew I’d get something cool or at least come out ahead. And it was fun for a while learning how to clear it. If a dungeon in GW2 doesn’t even pay out for the costs of armor repair, something is really messed up.

“This works fine if there is a smaller amount of people, but in big zerg-groups there is not enough time to stack enough bleeds to use epidemic, in fact most of the time the mobs are dead before I can even finish casting epidemic. If you don’t run a well build and have "wells to rotate through you need to rely fully on marks or wait for cool down on DS #4.’

I haven’t seen more than 3 or 4 people at any DE since the starter zones. I’m 65 now and have been doing many of them solo, unless its group dependent. What you said makes perfect sense though. If everything is dying quickly, our bleeds don’t mean diddly squat. We’ll see when I hit 80. Really, Anet can’t do squat about it unless they change the formula for rewards, counting simply hitting the mobs as reward enough. Considering Necros have zippo for burst dmg, Anet barely gave the whole concept of DE rewards more than a passing thought in how they function then.

What a complete amateurish oversight.

Can those claiming they can’t get gold in DEs, please explain what you’re doing, because the only time I don’t get gold is when I get there a few seconds before it ends. Even then I can get silver for barely doing anything it seems. I just throw down wells, marks and pop epidemic on any mob with loads of bleeds and run into the pack in DS hit #4 and run out…rinse/repeat. Never had any issue. This tactic seems fairly obvious….mass AOE bleeds and conditions hitting everything.

Simple question really. How would someone know if its healing them or their enemy? How would someone know if the well is blinding them or poisoning them or not? Or is the piddly group healing ticks that a well offers not worth the effort to stay in the well, so no one cares?

Ground targeted wells, ect should have the option of being cast at the location of the mob targeted. It should be a setting like auto-attack, you can turn on/off.

I haven’t found it very difficult manually doing it. Eventually its second nature. The cursor targeting I’ve found too unreliable under hectic situations.

The 1 thing I remember about WAR that was brilliant was the duel target system. Enemy/friendly. Awesome, but pointless in this game since you have almost no reason to track group members due to no true support/healing mechanic.

The camera is VERY bad near walls and in enclosed spaces. It also doesn’t zoom back as far as it should. Have to bring up WOW like some others, but look there for how to do it right. No one will fault a company for doing what other companies do well. UI and control has always been a strong suit of WOW. trying not to do something like it just to be different is like trying to reinvent the wheel. There’s no point when someone has already done it essentially perfect.

MMOs aren’t as social now, because they don’t have to be. I talked a lot more in DAOC, AO, ect, before voice chat, because you could easily do it while fighting. Think back. a few buttons, slow attacks. No movement necessary. It was easy to carry on conversations while playing the game. Now, you can’t play and chat, unless you’re on headphones and frankly, I just don’t dig talking to people(unless personal friends) in game. Even in 04 with WOW I cared more about being a part of a group. I wanted those virtual “friends” and you needed them to get anything meaningful done. Now it really doesn’t matter.

So that’s a around 1 month to hit max level…kind a sad if you ask me. Yes, I’ll try the dungeons, but knowing what I know now, there is no way in hell I’ll be running dungeons 50 times for some gear that’s not really any better than stuff I can buy…just a different skin. The map completion mini game is actually one of the fresh ideas that made it feel different from other MMOs. Also, you don’t have to explore. I just turned 60 with no rush at all to get to 80. I’ve tossed away anything that increases EXP, because whats the point? I haven’t rushed. I’ve just played and the levels just happen, too quickly for my taste to be honest. Did a DE and before I knew it, gained 1 &1/2 levels? What??? All I know is that as soon as I finish the map I’m on, I’m the perfect lvl to go on to the next. Pacing has been perfect, content wise. Just wish I could be in a zone a bit longer before going onto the next one.

I think when I played WOW back at release, it would take weeks to out-level a zone. In GW after a couple of nights, I’m through it. A little too fast.

I hit 80 over a week ago, and I’m having more fun now than I was before. The people who get to 80 and get bored are simply looking for another grindfest experience like so many other MMOs.

Progression hits a wall once you hit 80, so what are you saying? People aren’t looking for a grind, but they find it once they hit 80 because everything you’re doing after that is a grind. Dungeons? You have to run them 40-50+ times to get a set of gear. WvW resets every week so anything accomplished is erased 7 days later? PvP? You’re fighting for different skins. Different skins, thats it! As far as fun goes, after a few weeks, how much fun are the same maps going to be? Its just capture points…no other gameplay modes. Unless you LOOOOOOVE PvP, there really isn’t much else to do at 80, besides run the dungeons a couple of times. Once you beat it though, whats fun about doing 50 more times…FOR DIFFERENT SKINS?

Now, if it took 5-6 months to get to 80, that’s one thing, but its happening in under a month for casual players. The best thing to do at 80 is roll an alt and experience the maps you didn’t do the first time around.

Your random rewards for map completion are kitten!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Josher.9612

In WoW you get absolutely nothing for map completion besides your achievement. Here they decided to give some rewards and just because “some” doesn’t mean a perfect combination of items that are completely suited for your class/build/level/needs you people find it reasonable to come here and complain.

I strongly believe that if they gave everything, everyone asked for, people would still find reasons to come here and complain, because they just can’t be happy enough.

Heck this is the first game I ever played that gives you something at all, just for seeing a whole map.

Yes, WOW didn’t give you rewards for map completion, but the system was never in place so you didn’t expect it. You got rewards through other means, quests, ect. Also, its not about perfect rewards. Its about fun. What is fun? Fun is NOT selling stuff you can’t use on the TP. Sorry. Fun is knowing that the rewards MIGHT be better than what you have and if its not, oh well. But the anticipation is always there. In GW, I’ve stopped anticipating positive rewards because they rarely come. THAT’s a problem. Good rewards come from buying stuff after the fact, which is NOT really fun unless hitting search on the TP and clicking “buy” is fun;) Its just a means to an end.

I don’t think anyone is asking to everything, just a reward you can use. How hard is it to code it so random gear that your class can use is rewarded upon map completion, not just random from ALL classes? VERY simple actually. It doesn’t have to be the exact piece you want, just something you can actually wear if you chose to. If it doesn’t have the stats, then you sell, but at least seeing a Sceptor or Dagger for your Necro makes you think COOL. ANOTHER piece of heavy armor after I got rewarded a shield and a piece of medium armor last time is NOT cool.

And NO, I won’t be thankful for the genius that is giving me a random reward when I finish a map=) Its about doing it the correct, fun, OBVIOUS way.

On a side note, the lvl 50 rare gear I bought from the Trade post looked EXACTLY the same as one of the lvl 80 token sets in Lion’s Arch. What??? Are you kidding me with this? Way to not have a clue about progression.

You haven’t played much of GW1, have you?

No, the world was painfully linear, with only that 1 central city, which turned me off almost instantly. Not my thing. Only thing that impressed me was how quickly the game was up and running once you started the download and the graphic style. Within minutes you were playing, which was pretty astounding.

Hate to rant, but this is the 7th or 8th map I’ve completed and AGAIN I get rewards I can’t use and its finally got on my nerves these past weeks. Seriously, how can developers sit around a table throwing ideas off eachother and agree, “Yeah, lets give people rewards they can’t use, aren’t at the top of the level cap for the zone, AH trash. THAT’s FUN!!” That’s what people want=) Completing a zone is supposed to be an accomplishment. Getting stuff I can’t use is not a good reward. Its like a slap in the face, mocking you for wasting your time.

Here’s a tip. Its NOT fun. Take a lesson from Blizzard and Gearbox who’ve mastered the art of that shiny reward…give people what they actually want or at least they can use. THAT’s fun. THAT’s interesting. Getting another great sword or shield on my Necromancer is not cool. It will never be cool.

Still can’t imagine what possible reason there could be to design the reward system like that. Although, the reward system all around is basically a cluster when you compare it to other MMOs. First time the game has seriouslykitten me off, because I was having a lot of fun up until now=)

Because there’s no monthly fee, what more do you want for $60? 250 hrs in less than a month? That’s more than 8 hrs a day…holy ^%$($ dude. Sure, its technically a MMO, but its not one of the investment types. You play for a while, get a toon to 80, maybe roll an alt and do some PvP or WvW for a little longer then take a break until the next expansion. That’s how most people will basically treat the game. Its not one of those play constantly for years, since unless you’re OBSESSED with tournament play, what the heck is going to keep you going after a couple of months? Most people really aren’t going to farm dungeons or karma for gear that “looks” nice, week after week if there’s nothing you can really do with it besides go “look at me!” And even then does anyone care? When I saw someone running around with a unique sword or cool set of armor in WOW, I knew it also kickedkitten too. In GW2, its all just a skin.

I think the lack of any sort of dedicated healing mechanic hampers a lot of potential strategy in boss fights. That and no way to truly control aggro. Besides, dying VERY fast to 1 or 2 hits is the cheap way out in any boss fight since boss fights were created. Any BADLY designed boss in any game you can imagine invariably comes down to those “cheap” deaths. The fun bosses are those you remember “outplaying”. There is little strategy when you know you’re going to get killed regardless of what you do. That’s what makes it frustrating and not fun.

I’ve always been able to take on multiple mobs a few levels above me, through heavy use of wells, Blood is power and Epidemic, condition/power gear, pop into DS for more AOE if things get tight. Lich or Plague for fun.

Start with staff, then switch to Scepter/Dagger, transfer self bleeds back onto the mobs and spread it around….lots of bleeding numbers ticking away all over the place. At least its worked very well so far into the mid 50s.

PvP is another story. I’m sadly, too used to WOW, where every animation and spell cast was so easily identifiable and counterable….INTUITIVE!!!. I have yet to see how skills in GW2 can be identified so you can react, since I can’t see the “tells”. Mostly everything seems instacast so you’re just reacting after the fact…for now. It took around 5 months for normal people to get to max lvl in WOW and I never felt any sort of grind back them. I’ll be hitting 80 in around 1 month or less. If the only real progression is how my character looks, there certainly isn’t much motivation for me to play that character all that much.

The progression system is all over the place. Become max level instantly and get every ability in the game, then you’re deleveled again. Dungeon give you these rewards, which aren’t even good. PvP gives you these other rewards, but you can’t use them here or there. Its all very disjointed. You barely stay in one area long enough to really connect with it any gear you get is outdated so quickly, unless you’re collecting rares and buffing them up, which I forced myself to do just to CARE about the gear I have. Seems I can get a almost 10 levels out of a yellow, instead of trading greens and blues every 2-3 levels.

Its fun, but the persistence isn’t there, which is good and bad.

ON a bigger note, how can zones be dead only a few weeks after release? Its crazy. Hello, its prime time, 8-11pm. The place should be loaded. The topic about Vizunah nightcapping everything during the night, having alot of French Canadians, filling the walls with siege weapons and upgrading everything while the other 2 servers are asleep has been something Vizunah players have denied over and over.

This weekend Friday-Sunday, Far Shiverpeaks proved it. Since FS could play through the whole night, we held the lead during the whole weekend.

What happened during the night to monday? Far Shiverpeaks players had to go to sleep early, Vizunah captures all, takes all orbs, upgrades all keeps, fills the walls with sieges, and gets over 40k points during night, passing Far Shipverpeaks in the lead.

Sounds like DAOC all over again with the no-lifers stealing relics and keeps at 3am when normal people slept. I found it pointless to fight for hours on end only to have any progress you made, erased by a small group who don’t work or go to school. Made RvR pointless in my view and back then the rewards seemed far more meaningful. This seems like the same tactic. Guess you can’t fix the same problems from over 10+ yrs ago?

The chaos is what gets me in the graphics and shear number of stuff that’s effecting you constantly. 1 skill having 3 different effects is a problem. Its just not as streamlined as it should be., but honestly thats not changing. Its just the way it is. Its why the PvP in WOW was so intuitive and precise. Like others said. It was a dance of reaction, because you could really see what the other guy was doing and you weren’t getting hit with bleeds, weakness, slow all at once. Once you learned the animation and spell effects it really was a dance.

I’d say I still need more time learning, but for whatever reason, my motivation to learn isn’t as great as it was when I was learning in WOW back in 04. It might be due to the lack of any meaningful progression. PvP because its fun? Uh, yeah, but chaos isn’t fun for me.

Criticize Blizzard all you want, but they really understand all the little things and unique animations and graphics that correspond specifically and intuitively is what made WOW so great. GW2 is great in some ways as well, but PvP has issues.

These threads are depressing. I’ve only went into spvp and wvw once and it all felt like a complete chaotic cluster, so I’ve avoided it until I get to 80. Too many effects, too many explosions, wells, cicrles to keep track of, without knowing which are bad and which are beneficial. Targeting isn’t as precise as WOW. Feedback as to your buffs and debufs arent as well represented. Yeah I said it. But it’s still new.

In pve I’ve never felt underpowered, never have any problems getting gold in every event and can take on 3 mobs a few levels above with little problem, when using ALL my skills. I’m specked conditionmancer. You can wipe out mobs but you have to rotate everything at your disposal.. Yet, I can watch a warrior run into a group of mobs, do the spinny thing and one other skill and everything is dead and he’s at 1/2 health when he’s done. Balanced? Doesn’t appear so.

Im hoping things get fixed by the time I hit 80. I’m 50 now, so another few weeks, unless leveling slows down. I certainly won’t struggle to compete in PVC, when other classes appear to have it so much easier. If Anet claims we’re harder to play then shouldn’t the reward be greater with more effort compared other classes where you can be powerful without thinking or using as much strategy? THATs balance. If a warrior can be more effective using 3 buttons, compared to us using everything and swapping weapons and using all our utilities, then something is waaaaay off.

I wish I never read the forums and stayed in blissful ignorance:)

If we’re supposed to spend half our time in a form with 4 skills 2 of which are a joke unles trained, yes, this class is screwed at the core. If we’re supposed to learn how to properly use a 1 sec fear and a teleport to our enemy skill, someplace that normally just gets us killed faster, I don’t know what to say.

Is there any reason for Death Shroud to start at 0% at the start of a match

It doesn’t take that long to build up the death shroud meter

Actually it does.

It means you can’t 1v1 any decent player early in the game. In a tourney setting, you can’t send your necro alone to waterfall/quarry, or to the treb in kyhlo.

so you just expect your class to be able to 1v1 anyone…right..

Yes, I expect to have the ability to actually use my class defining mechanic and have a chance to win without waiting for about 10 people to die before having enough LF to use it? Seriously?

Death Shroud weakens & complicates builds.

1 thing that could help DS is 5 more abilities and a fear that actually does what fear is supposed to do. Why do other professions get better fear than us? Makes no sense. Having a full set of abilities in DS will also make playing it more fun. Taking us to a target is useless or VERY situation, a 1 sec fear is a joke. We’re supposed to turn into death right?
