@Ronah: http://www.wowwiki.com/Best_in_slot

I haven’t read the whole topic, but I stay by my opinion about this. It’s optional. You don’t have to do it. And grind is a grind if you make it a grind. I have made 3 pieces of ascended armor because it keeps me busy and I need a new armor set if a cool gem store armor comes out anyways. I haven’t even maxed out wep.smith because I don’t care, I used exo wep till I got my ascended drop from Teq week ago.So yeah, otherwise I wouldn’t care. I’m not in full ascended, am I at disadvantage? No nor do I care. Am I beaten in WvW?, sometimes, because I’m a pve guy and don’t want to change my gear. Never felt I was at disadvantage nor it was a grind. Different mindset makes a different game.

@subdue
although my feelings are obviously different than Zalman’s, this is precisely what i meant in the beginning. what do you think about BiS and VP?

@zalman, thank you for your polite and in-topic answer.

@Kevan

You keep saying the same thing over and over. “This is my opinion, this is my opinion this is my opinion… not my job to understand, not my job to understand… blah blah blah.” Seems to me like if you don’t want other people criticizing your flawed views, you should put them in your diary, not a forum meant for discussion.

it’s your opinion that my views are flawed. not absolute truth.
at least, i’m conscient that it’s my personal view.
you’re are so sure of everything.

and continue to go OT, and keep insulting people “teaching” what’s wrong and why.

as i said, your opinion about it is welcome.
say why do you like it or not.
not why the others MUST like it or not.

I don’t know if that’s what it means. I see a whole lot of people running around with GWAMM titles. You’re guessing here about how many original Guild Wars 1 players don’t like what’s going on, and for how many this is a deal breaker for.

i don’t even try to give any percentages or numbers.i don’t know.
i’m sure anet had some reasons, but my feeling is that they lost MANY.
(and i feel that they lost more ppl than the expected, especially if compared to increase/not decrease in population they wanted)
i said “many”. because i know many friends (talking about hundreds. of the three guilds i played with) who, like me, have quitted at the end of 2012 because of the things we know.

i’m here to express my feeling about the game.
-it’s not my “work” to understand why they did it, and if it was better or not for their economy. (above, it’s just my superficial pov)
still, here i am, complaining about the game, and of course not playing it-
my hate for new tiers. for new gear progression. my hate for “forced” (because i feel it so. plz don’t explain me again because other ppl dont feel it mandatory.) grind.
but i think it’s been explicited too many times.

another personal opinion of a noob and a consumer.
i think that vertical progression could be painlessly bypassed by introducing a decent horizontal one, but with a slightly harder work to make it worth.

i’m sure ANet knows quite precisely this “numbers”

what ppl like us can see, is only a piece of the whole, but it is clear that a lot of players who bought the game early quitted soon, and many of them did it because endgame lacks content…and many others after ascended introduction because STILL endgame sucks AND ascended are a pain and against their “ideals”

i don’t know if gw2 has increased its population after, and i don’t know if the new players/ comeback players did it because of ascended or for other reasons, but the fact that a lot of “faithful” players who bought the game at launch (gw1 lovers? casuals?) quitted soon is a symptom that there’s a huge issue around.

i think i ve already written elsewhere about manifesto.
but not in the post you quoted.

and manifesto brings us nowhere but towards arguments among p(l)ayers.
so i left that 3d , trying to make in a new one some constructive considerations about what could bring casuals back to gw2…
until someone started again to argue about words…:\

the issue are that:
- ascended is a new BiS
- and ALSO hard to get

i DO have real problems with more tiers.
another tier of new BiS would stil be a problem to me. also if easy to get.
so, the problem is also vp as it is. not only that gear is not readily available.
(and as we know the aim of new tiers is to be a time\money sink, so it s quite a contradiction to expect that new equip would be acquired in few hours)

the “compromises” about the ways to acquire ascended were done on the basis that anet will never remove them. but could at least reduce grind.
and stop vp to the point we are now…and start with horizontal

I’ll give you 2 weeks before you go back on most of what you said.

I play since release day and still play several hours each day and love it.

Then you should be in the class of people who suffer the most from the games problems.

Quite a few people have been playing since launch. Just because you don’t like something, doesn’t mean it’s bad. You just don’t like it, and you know…that’s okay.

It’s when people start trying to make their opinion into fact that the problem starts.

I like this game so the game is good for me. You don’t like this game so the game is bad for you.

Neither of us is right. But you shouldn’t assume the OP won’t like it in two weeks, because there are people playing since beta 1 who still like it.

I like the game. I still play many hours a day. That doesn’t make the direction the game is going good, it’s just the stuff from launch/shortly after is still interesting to me.

MMOs should never have been designed to cater to people who work 9-5 and play 1 hour a day around a family life.

Jeez, that’s a bit harsh. Do you not have to work for a living or something?

I’m not criticising the group I mentioned, simply stating that MMOs have never been catered to such players, and as a genre known for such deep character progression and development, methods should never be easily attainable by those with extremely limited time.

oh dear, i think that i misunderstood nearly everything about gw2….
i thought it was about casuals, and “people who don’t like mmos”

good. just in time to change game.

ooops..i already spent 50bucks in 2012…what the hell!

Yes you spent $50. And how many hours of play did you get for the $50? I’d wager more than you’d get for most games for $50.

And Guild Wars 2 never claimed that it would be made ONLY for casuals. I’d like you to show me where that was advertised. Guild Wars 2 is VERY casual friendly because you don’t need ascended gear to do 99.9 percent of the content.

What your issue is is that you’re not casual because you insist on BIS gear, which most casual players don’t really care about. That’s part of what makes them casual.

as you love words, i didn’t say it was ONLY for casuals. and i didn’t say it was advertised.
just said i “misunderstood”.
strange phenomenon. in some threads you go directly to correct the supposed meaning of a post. in others only stick to semantics ignoring the message. interesting

Fixing the availability seems weighted more to two slot types: armor and back pieces.

Fixing the system so VP is kept to a minimal level relies on limiting how much power growth is done in the future. (If not refusing to grow it at all.)

. . . can we all agree on these points?

i think that the “time” and “effort” factors could be a problem also for weapons, which are unlikely drops and, in the facts, require crafting too.
(in my opinion. everything should be available without crafting. as it’s not a work, everybody should be able to obtain what he needs, doing only what he likes more.
it’s a game. real world is tough enough.)

for trinkets and necks, i find it grindy but still “tolerable”.

Vertical Progression: for me, zero tolerance it’s more than enough what we’ve already seen. a big not to everything else which improves stats.
i think that if anets manages to show a real, mature, enjoyable horizontal progression, it could change the whole, grind-ill, life-wasting, mmo world.
and that’s why i bought it.

Actually you’re completely wrong. You can’t say you have zero tolerance for vertical progression. Want to know why?

Because before Anet introduced ascended gear at all….vertical progression was already in this game.

Exotics, rares, and masterwork items all have the same levels, but they’re different tiers of the same gear. That is vertical progression.

You don’t have zero tolerance for vertical progression, or you’d be complaining about exotics.

You have an arbitrary line that Anet crossed and you’re calling it vertical progression. Why are you not complaining about exotic gear?

ok. do what you want with language.
still, i think that if i “misunderstand” everything, you are stuck in semantics, losing the global meaning of what people is complaining about.

no. i m right if i say zero tolerance to vp. or…“that’s enough vp”.
as exotics were there since the launch of the game, and were always easily got after 80. with little to no “aimed” grind.
this doesn’t happen with ascended.
it’s a time and money\resources\amount of work threshold.
and of course, a “stop line” threshold, no more tiers, no more stats.

is this philosophically and philologically correct, prof.Vayne?
of course not.
but still our “arbitrary grind line” exists. and it’s personal one, and nobody has the right to "correct"it.
just express your personal one.

if they really wanted to make ppl like me come back in these months before a virtual horizontal progress., they still can find an easier and more “democratic” way for getting ascended, via other methods than forced crafting.
a quick fix to repair the painful mats gathering that gw1 fans hate.
or add a new tier exotics so to be equal to ascended. maybe without ar slots so that grind necessity is limited to fractals and doesn t touch wvw.

(and then totally stop with tiers and infusions. or they would leave again)

yeah…
looking at older threads, i found ppl complaining about grindy /ugly skins, or lack of contents after 80, or asking for a dungeon finder.
asking for new weapons, skills…classes.
or too many bugs…

but an increase in stats…not a lot.
it s anet that decided that a handful or numbers (and long months to acquire them ) was the easy way to keep people busy and logged in, forced by timed events and daily chests. like any other mmo.

Please link me to where GW2 is “advertised” as easy to obtain BiS. The closest I’ve been able to find is the manifesto where it actually says “You don’t have to wait to start having fun,” which is true with exotic, and even rare gear.

Sure.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/is-it-fun-colin-johanson-on-how-arenanet-measures-success/

revelant quote

Fun impacts loot collection. The rarest items in the game are not more powerful than other items, so you don’t need them to be the best. The rarest items have unique looks to help your character feel that sense of accomplishment, but it’s not required to play the game. We don’t need to make mandatory gear treadmills, we make all of it optional, so those who find it fun to chase this prestigious gear can do so, but those who don’t are just as powerful and get to have fun too.

Key phrase: so those who find it fun to chase this prestigious gear can do so, but those who don’t are just as powerful and get to have fun too.

And if you consider legendaries as “the rarest items in the game”, which they are, is this not still accurate? And notice the use of the word “mandatory.” Ascended gear is not in any way “mandatory.” Honestly, I feel like you either don’t understand what a gear treadmill is, or you’re intentionally misusing the phrase to garner support.

he’s the king of troll!

well, um…interpreting or misinterpreting the words of this manifesto that clearly has the same importance as a squished kitten on the highway in summer….

Dude… As far as I know when you play the game you level up a character. And as soon as it’s a level 80 and the vertical progression is over you make another one. So there is not so much difference between you and people that want to progress their characters instead of creating a new one.

leveling to 80 is a pleasure.
everything you do gives exp. everything you do gives karma.
you’ve got all you need to play, just following story and hearts.
nothing to buy from black lion. nothing to craft because tou find it.
just jump in a map or another, and follow anything and anybody.
what is more, it’s interesting you unlock new skill and traits and learn to play that profession.

after you hit 80:
do the same zones over and over, chains of events, fractals, just for mats and gold…and in doing all this, your growth is nothing.
(also grinding dungeons for skins is repetitive, but at least, it ends soon. and a skin vs another doesn’t give you any advantage over other players.)
it’s only increasing numbers to get another gear that increases other numbers.
and i feel it’s mandatory as it would give me better stats.

again, and again:
it’s a waste of time trying to demostrate that grind is good and vertical progression is necessary for gw because people wouldnt’ play, that gw was not so good etcetcetcetc….
we don’t like it. we hate it. our gaming experience is made worse by it.

please, and please again:
stop. you like it?
explain why you like it or not. period
and not the reasons because of which do you think we have to like the game too.

You know, I don’t really care about Ascended Gear one way or the other. I hear lots of complaints about it being uber-expensive. I haven’t spent any money on Ascended Gear. I have a few items from laurels and such. My crafting is moving along steadily, it’s in the upper 400s. It may take me 6 months or a year to craft the Armor, should I decide to do so. Wasn’t that the idea? To introduce something that took some time to achieve? What’s the big rush? Maybe all those in a hurry are Fractal players, I just don’t know. But, if you don’t buy your materials, it’s not very expensive…at least, not for me. =)

The problem is that they put a stat increase on it. Honestly, if they’d left it with exotic stats with the addition of agony resistance then I’d be perfectly happy. I’d feel like I had reached a fully geared position, and I’d be relaxed and playing the game, enjoying myself. Instead I don’t feel fully geared, I’m not relaxed, and as a result I’m not enjoying myself nearly as much as I would be. I feel the constant compulsion to work towards ascended gear so I can be “done” and start really playing the game.

again, +1
it expresses perfectly what i feel when logging in.
and then, it’s a matter of seconds before logging out.

i think that vertical progression hurts my gaming experience.
i feel forced doing dailies, world events, etc…because it s necessary to craft ascended, to avoid any “handicap” when playing with other better geared ppl.
don t care if it s relevant or not that stats difference in wvw o pve. just hate that.

i loved to grind for a title. for skins. i felt really motivated and found it a free choice.
vertical progression binds me to a sense of inferiority, grind like a necessary work to be done for a mandatory aim.
my two cents.

i already stated it in the opening, and throughout the whole post.
it’ s a FEELING of being left behind. of time wasting if not working on it, as it’s so long to acquire. frustration.
a sword of Damocles hanged over head.
(still, i don’t think its just a feeling, but let’s ignore it for now)
something that purely cosmetic-oriented grind didn’t made me feel.
and made many of us choose gw2 to many other traditional mmo.

again…if you want keep screaming your ideas, no problem. my “virtual” ears are fine.
there’s no argument in this post. everyone expressed his opinion…and, as always, someone tries to “teach” his truth…

- Like vertical progression, so long as it’s not pointlessly “watch the numbers go up”. Don’t mind it if it’s that way so long as it’s not mindless grind one notch out of a thousand to hit the next increase.

i think that this is a sort of mindless grind watching the numbers go up (of mats, gold and laurels…and, although it is just a little change, also of gear stats).
some hundreds hours too much for me to enjoy.
lifelong hours doing some things i’d never had done if it wasn’t required for ascended.
and that i’m not gonna do! (craft on my main is zeroed. sell everything…and 400k karma i will never use)

uhm…
and what if nobody cares about gw1? or other treadmills…or don’t care if we absolutely need or not that equip to wvw or pve?
i think that this discussion will last forever…

Kevan, stop doing that to yourself. You don’t need ascended… it’s simply there as a final carrot for those that prefer to have a carrot to chase. Don’t ignore the rest of the salad bar because you can’t reach the carrot yet. I have no ascended weapons or armors yet, and I’m quite an active player. Yes, I’m taking my time working towards my first ascended piece, but in the WvW and PvE I do it’s not necessary and doesn’t hold me back in the slightest. Just stop worrying about something you don’t need to worry about. The pressure you’re feeling is self-inflicted.

talking only about my position:
the new BiS ascended and the grind required for getting them, is a problem, and i’ll never deal with it. i have no reasons for “obeying” anet
always in the future, when i login (if ill ever login again), as long as there are ascended, (and are the BiS, and can be acquired by crafting, which i’ll never max out to 500 because it’s expensive, time wasting and boring) i’ll feel a sense of frustration because something i want to have is precluded to me because i’ll never work on it , and even if would give an insignificant boot to my stats, i’ll feel it.

i think that also demostrating that:
-anet has the right to change the game at his will
-anet did keep its word
-ascended are equivalent to exotics for most game
(and, believe me, i disagree with every each of this reasons people try to prove my point of view wrong)
even if each point you show was true and i accepted it, it wouldn’t be sufficient to convince me that it’s the right game and i should continue to play it.
i used to love it because of what it was in the beginning, when i believed in BiS in a few hours (*i don’t want to know if i was right or not in interpreting manifersto or choosing to play a mmo, or if anet is right or not. it’s just what i like. please. i don’t need lessons about grammar or law or economy or mmo gameplay. i loved it, period),
in no gear new tiers, in no heavy grind.
simply, this conditions no longer exist.

i expressed my feeling in a “opinion” post, and really want to know if you prefer vertical progression or not, and why.
i (and i think anybody else) don’t need any lessons about why i should like gw2 the same ALTHOUGH they introduced ascended.
i don’t like them. period.

no flame wars. please, nobody convincing the others about why the others should or shouldn’t complain about it..but;
punctualizing what i meant to ask in the op…
-do you like vertical progression?
-if you dont like it,just like me, why ?
-or if you like it, why do you like it?

Ascended goes against ever thing great that Guild Wars once stood for, and should never have had better stats. Seriously, in the sequel to one of the games that proved pure horizontal progression and prestige skins work great, how do you get this wrong?

yeah. as gw showed in the past, i think it could still work, evem with a more wow-used ppl.

I would also prefer just horizontal progression. But you’ve got to bear in mind that a lot of people who play GW2 want at least some vertical progression.

When the game was first released a lot of players breezed through most of the available content (or at least levelling, getting a full set of exotics and doing all the dungeons) then started complaining that there was nothing left that gave them any sense of progression of any kind. What they asked for specifically was vertical progression – usually in the form of a gear treadmill with raids as the method of acquisition.

Personally I think Anet did a good job of compromising by adding just 1 new tier with a relatively small stat increase which is only actually required for the ‘hard mode’ version of one optional dungeon. And especially doing it in such a way that the one tier has kept those who want vertical progression occupied for over a year.

But I am concerned about what they’re going to do when most of those people have got a full set of ascended and start demanding something else to grind for. Or how they’ll handle an expansion. I’m sure many people, particularly those who came from other MMOs are expecting an expansion to include an increase in the level cap and new tiers of equipment to go with it and will be disappointed and/or angry if that doesn’t happen, but other people (aka us) will be disappointed if they do that.

But I think we should worry about burning that bridge when we get to it.

maybe those people complaining about no endgame and no vert progress would be happy with a endgame with more interesting story, living story, new skills and so on.
if they were bored by the game, it wasn’t for the absence of a gear to grind ONLY.
but also for a lack of contents that anet tried to fulfill with the easy carrot: grind to BiS.

so switching back to only horizontal prog. might be a right compromise

well…as seems that also who used to defend ascended as “options” don t need that ascended so much..so why are these ascended still there?
i think that complaints of people who don’t want/need them is much more evident than those from the ppl who asked FOR ascended…
just my feeling

yeah. i d love to see a new class, new weapons, new skills, new maps, new skins, new pets.
anything BUT a new BiS equio.
and i think there s a lot of room to satisfy with it also vertical progression lovers as well

the matter is that for me, and many others, even that little increase in stats is a pain, and cause ppl to feel “behind the others”.
i d like PURE horizontal progression.
that is what many of us are asking for…

i really loved gw2.
the setting. the plot. every single piece of it. the lore. the ost i bought.
i used to buy gems just to support devs. just spend for getting skins

since the introduction of ascnded, and the inhuman amount of gold and time to get it, i feel in prison.
and uninstalling it is a pain for me
i really hope that something will change

ascended to be gained in more ways? (and shorter ways, am a casual)
make grind only a way to skins and cosmetic chnges or exp powerups or similar.
i d like to log in once a day, and feel that also that little time i play is a pleasure.
not that i m always behind the others

as i didn t find a thread talking specifically about it except for old ones and struggles about manifesto, and i think it s “legal” to express my opinion pacifically…

i think that vertical progression hurts my gaming experience.
i feel forced doing dailies, world events, etc…because it s necessary to craft ascended, to avoid any “handicap” when playing with other better geared ppl.
don t care if it s relevant or not that stats difference in wvw o pve. just hate that.

i loved to grind for a title. for skins. i felt really motivated and found it a free choice.
vertical progression binds me to a sense of inferiority, grind like a necessary work to be done for a mandatory aim.
my two cents.

dear god…please it’s enough about court, promise, illegal, false advertis. …etc

-some of us, such as…me, saw in the manifesto a promise and then now feel betrayed.
-some of you don’t. good for you, of course.

the actual point is: although it was promises or not, does manifesto still apply to the future?
imho, the answer is not.
there will be again gear progression? yes, it could happen.
grind? here it is

so…the only thing to do is: (for “haters”)
ask anet to stop the progression. and also grinding and the mandatory crafting way to get ascended.

and also if devs don t give a kitten to what we write here, i’ll continue to express my opinion: that gw2 has become something i don’t like, and would came back to game if some of these things change.
if you agree, support who has the same ideas

krall and someone else like the game as is it now?
write on the forum that you like it as it is and you could leave the game if it goes backwards.
that’s all.
stop trying to prove wrong others’ preferences just to give authority to what you like in the game.

They made another promise…
Ascended would be the last thing that made previous equipment obsolete.

No they didn’t. They said that they CURRENTLY DON’T HAVE ANY PLANS, nothing more, nothing less.

And Ascended does not make anything obsolete for that matter.

read better….i don t have the link but its in the vertical CDI if i remember well…

Deny everything -.- as Always…..even what devs say

well, i m just as angry as you are!

but…my friend, everything devs stated means nothing.
for me, it was a promise and their word.
but if it was a promise in the beginning, now we do know that they deserve no trust.
if we stick to it, we’ll have only bad news.

all of us know exactly what the manifesto meant. but we must face the fact that there are no guarantees they ll respect anything they stated in the manifesto.

so i think that the answer to the OP is simple…manifesto is dead and buried.
and we can expect anything to happen

IMHO, obsolete= not BiS , so i think that yeah, exotics ARE obsolete.

but +1, they didn t promise that ascended is last tier.
(and it’s unlikely it will….at least will need infusions treadmill)
and also if they did, i would t believe it
as manifesto teaches.

i think that a new level cap, soon or later, is a good option for the devs.
i believe than it will happen.

what about CDI?
it’s not bilateral communication.
it s like a poll….where devs ask about customers opinions…and period.
it’s not like a “blue post” with news.
there are no infos from anet until it’s too late

I think everyone is a little too worried about this. ArenaNet has made some poor decisions in the past in my opinion, but they’ve never done anything to deliberately screw over the playerbase in an attempt to make more money. If they tick everyone off, they’ll lose profits, and it’s clear that the devs are pretty passionate gamers too.

I’m all for ANet continuing to think through options to generate more money to fund the development of the game because it means a win for both the company and the players. I would only be upset if they crossed the line and started penalizing players for profit, but as I’ve said, it will be their own grave if they choose to cross that line.

IMHO, there won’t be a subscription fee..would be too like a harakiri.
(and i’m quite the opposite of a fanboy)
well…i hope that news are false….nothing is so sure when depending on anet :o

it’s interesting to notice how ppl are unsatisfied about the game, so that any news is a bad news, and start whining and flaming in the forum.
i think that it should make anet think more about what it’s going on here.
what they did wrong to make players so angry.
and try to go back to what things used to be, when anet still deserved some trust.

What is going on.
Well very much this: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/A-focus-on-micro-transactions/first#post3324571

And funny enough, the VIP thing would fit right in there showing there are not going into the correct direction but doing the opposite. We will see.

well, i m one of the first ppl when there is some whine to be done

i m sure that the game has taken from a long time the direction of painful grind, treadmill, money cry and consequent ragequit (i already uninstalled)
but i feel that a fee would be too much bitter to swallow even for the most optimistic fanboy. can anet be so masochist?
(i would be very glad if it was xD)

Crafting only way to Ascended?

Anyone remember back when they first introduced ascended when ArenaNet admitted in a Reddit AMA that it was a mistake making ascended only attainable through 1 method? If you EVER believed that ArenaNet would learn from mistakes, NOPE. I guess in their eyes as long as some of the ascended has an abysmal chance to drop and trinkets are available through other means that’s a win?

simply, they intended ascended to be available only through that 1 method.
nothing is a “mistake”.
everything has been discussed and discussed over the months before being launched.
it’s just their decision, as they wanted it to be.
there is nothing to hope for.
i really don’t think they ll never make ascended easier to acquire.
if also there were more ways to have one, it still would be a solemn, life-wasting, money-draining months-long grind. (well, i’m sure it’s not written in the right way, my english is very…you know it… hope you understand what i mean)
because it’s what they choose gw2 to be.

I don’t know what to say.

I can’t even ask “What happened to the GW1 ANet?” because I know that they all jumped ship.

It’s honestly saddest because if GW2 were actually better handled over its lifetime, people would probably try to laugh this off or honestly react in a calm, but concerned manner. Instead, everyone is just going to curse ANet into the ground, kick dirt on its face and trod off laughing “Good riddance,” because it’s believable. GW2 has fallen so low that we honestly believe that this leak could be a legitimate reality.

It’s just sad.

+1. totally agree.
the “bad” news could be either true or false, but the fact itself that all of us doubt about it and start flaming before any official confirm, shows that anet is no more trustworth in the customers’ eyes.

Can I make this clear!

you find advantages in sports too over one athlete to another, nature doesnt create us all equal. Build, characteristics, external factors.

well...nature is not anet, for now.

we’re talking about an mmo.
mmo are designed around the slightest stats difference.
can it be little or evident, still there is it.

just my feelings

however, alpha beta or nightly, p2w or what do you want…there’s something totally going wrong if anet keeps this ideas even at an embrionic stage in their projects.
for me, a solid new reason to run away from what the game evolves in

Challenge shame this game revolves around casuals

Actually it revolves around Korean grind philosophy not casual philosophy.

+1
there’s nothing left for casuals.
maybe just the leveling part of the game.
done with that, there is only grind
