I mean what if these changes occurred 2 years down the line?

The MMORPG motto is: “Game experience may change during online play.”. Want me to list the MMORPGs who changed their world, rules and/or gameplay WAY more drastically than this? I can start with Ultima Online 17+ years ago, and there would NOT be enough place in a single post to list them all I think. Even the “mighty” World of Warcraft completely changed the way the game is played several times, last being the recent Pandaria, where most classes where completely revamped once more.

What if the changes happened 2 years down the line? It’s just a game. You got your time of fun. No difference with changes happening 3 months down the line. Don’t like it to the point of not playing anymore? Don’t play anymore. But asking your money back when you got 3 months worth of entertainment, or 2 years, or 10 years, is just dishonest, and also leaves those who keep on paying for the product with a very bad taste in their mouth.

“Here Bill, you played 3 months, for about 300 hours, please get your money worth of 4800 gems back please, but you, Paul, who keeps on playing and supporting the game, you have to pay 250 gems if you want to change your hairdo”. If nobody sees what’s wrong with that picture…

This makes my top ten saddest threads list. Who cares if Mr.X got a refund or not? How does that affect your game?

What goes around comes around… and considering ANet isn’t a non-profit organization, those refunds will reflect on the real customers, those who actually pay for the game. So yes, it affects my game. If people can play for 3 months for free, while I have to pay just to change my hairdo or get a new bank slot, then yes, it affects my game.
Sorry, but I forgot how to be naive 20 years ago when I was running my first company. The money had to come from somewhere. If they give it back in some place, they need to get it back at some other place.

Your analogy doesn’t make sense, cherrie. The game was a MMORPG and still is a MMORPG, it’s not a webshop changing into a blog.
And even if the recent changes are a reason for you to stop playing, it’s NOT a reason to get the money back from your previous playing time. You consumed something, you can’t get it back, it’s past, it’s done. Or it’s totally unfair for those who actually pay to support the product.

And thanks shiningsquirrel for understanding what I was saying.

Point is, I have to pay 250 gems just to change my hairdo in the game… why do people who got hundreds of hours of entertainment out of the game get the equivalent 4800+ gems refunded to them with no questions asked, if this is true. Try to justify this as hard as you want, with analogies with web applications or whatever else, you will fail, because there is something wrong with that.

@Harbard: thanks for revisiting your post, no hard feelings here, I know how web forums are Cheers!

I don’t understand why you are upset. That was the refund policy.

The game also made major changes that many people were not happy about. Some people were able to get a refund. I don’t know how many people got a refund just because they “got free playing time” out of it. Perhaps, some people are saying they did to justify spending a lot of time into a game that ultimately threw them away.

Honestly, this has been discussed to the ground. Let’s let sleeping dogs lie.

To the opposite, I’d like an official answer about this…

Even the (arguable) “major” changes are no excuse to ignore 3+ months of actually playing the game, aka consuming the media. That money they give back to people who got 100, 200, 300 or more hours out of the game reflects on those of us who keep playing and use the gem shop. So you need 250 gems to change your hairdo, but some guy who played 100, 200, or even 300+ hours over 3 months gets the real money equivalent of 4800 gems back, no question asked? Sorry if I feel there’s something wrong with that logic.

That’s why I’d like an official answer to this. I suspect that those guys just brag, but I want confirmation.

As far as the logic of the refund, here in the EU, you have 6 months after purchase to evaluate a product and see if it meets your needs, if not you can ask for a refund, no questions asked.

This is actually wrong, and I live in the EU too. Otherwise, the video game industry as well as the DVD/Blu-Ray industries would be bankrupt long ago, since everybody would take games/movies home for a couple of weeks and then bring them back for refund.

The real EU law is actually 14 days of refund rights. 2 weeks. That’s already a lot for most video games, but that’s the law. It’s definitely NOT 6 months. Use some basic logic, if that was true, nobody would pay for games anymore.

Assumptions will get you nowhere, harbard. I definitely don’t want a refund (why would I? I have 500 hours invested in my characters and I intend to play for years), but if people with 3+ months of gameplay can get some, then I think it’s time to stop that. I bought a digital deluxe and for 80+ Euros of gems, and people can get hundreds of hours out of the game without paying a cent, by being dishonest and asking for a refund after 3 months? Sorry, then I’m worried, and I think my question is a legit one.

The people from ArenaNET can check my account and see that I’m regularly buying gems in the shop.

Note I don’t mind a person who played a week or two and just realizes the game is not for him. But a person who got 1+ months out of it with hundreds of hours played getting a refund is outrageous for those like me who actually pay to keep this game alive and kicking, and if this is true, the intend of my post is to ask for this to STOP.

First, let me tell you I definitely do NOT want a refund, I’m very happy with the game and intend to play it a long, long time.

But I see more and more people, on various fan sites I won’t name here, “bragging” that they got a refund after hundreds of hours of playing. Lately, there’s a guy who plays since pre-order (beta events) who pretends he got full refund of the game after 3 months playing like 5+ hours a day on average.

If that is true, then I don’t understand your logic. On one side, you charge for stuff in your cash shop to your LOYAL player base, but on the other side, you give money (55+ Euros, 60+ dollars, aka approximatively 4800 gems) back to what I would call “scammers”, dishonest people, who got hundreds of hours of play time out of your game and then ask their money back so they basically got 3 months of free entertainment.

Please enlighten me about this, and tell me if this is true or not. I for sure hope it’s not true and those people are just bragging and looking for attention.

What I Use to do:
- Look forward to unlocking new traits and developing new build synergies.
- Look forward to trying out all the dungeon – both SM and EXP.
- Look forward to getting new looks, new dye colors, explore new terrains, etc.

Nothing stops you from still doing that, so I don’t understand your problem, if problem there is…

I’ve spend €80 (approx. $102) in the cash shop until now, that’s way more than what I would have paid for a subscription based MMORPG. That’s in addition to the purchase of a digital deluxe version of the game of course.

I won’t give one more cent to the shop until I’m 100% sure there will not be another layer of gear above ascended, and also that ascended gear will be available through all the play styles of the game (dungeon, but also crafting and WvW). If they don’t do that, if they add another layer or if the process to get ascended gear through other means is so much of a grind that no sane person would do it, then I will keep on playing occasionally (eating a logging spot and bandwidth), but I will NEVER ever spend one more cent in the shop.

Vote with your wallet. That’s the only way.

The new dungeon seems fun, however the enjoyment it would of granted has been greatly diminished by your company turning into a bunch of liars.

However on the positive side, you have saved me a great deal of money, as I will no longer use your gem store. I will continue to play and drain resources from you but you will no longer get any financial benefit from me doing so.

I also agree with Cactus – even though my feedback on the CONTENT is positive so far despite some technical problems with lag on the live events, I will not spend one more cent in your cash shop for now since you’ve broken your promise of not going the gear grind route. The new dungeon is awesome and should stand on his own without the new more powerful gear.
By hoping to get a couple of people back or joining, you betrayed your loyal customers – and you will pay for it. I gave 80 Euros (beside the initial digital deluxe edition purchase) to the game through the cash shop, that’s 40 Euros per month, more than I ever gave to a 13 Euros ($15) subscription game, because I liked the philosophy and wanted to support your effort to be different. If you go back to the standard gear grind MMO model, you lose my support. Simple. Voting with my wallet. Go back to the initial promises, and I will gladly fuel your game with more of my hard earned money in return.

My feedback… very simple.

1) The live event sucked. Sorry to be a bit harsh with words but that’s the truth. Lag all over the place, and I don’t mean graphic lag because of a crappy computer, but obviously server side lag, like abilities taking 10+ seconds to fire after the key press.

2) The scavenge hunt style “quest lines” are still wacky, bugged NPCs or events make it impossible to continue… ANet has to seriously improve there. What about a test server like all other games have? Granted, it removes some “surprise” factor, but everything will be on web sites a couple of hours after released anyway.

3) The new dungeon is fantastic. We had several groups running it in my guild, and all had a blast. That’s how to design a dungeon with fun and interesting encounters in GW2.

4) There was absolutely no need for the “ascended” gear with better stats. The dungeon is fun, there’s no need for a gear carrot to run it, except of course new cosmetic appearances.

I’m looking forward to see the new island soon.

I’ve bought 80 Euros worth of gems since release – I can hit that “unsubscribe” button anytime by not buying any more gems, which I will do if they persist in this move to turn GW2 into another gear carrot game.

If they said to us… we need more revenue and therefore will be implementing a monthly subscription fee INSTEAD OF a vertical progression…

Guys:

Gw1——-> CORPG
Gw2——-> MMORPG

what is appening atm is absolutely normal.

Bingo.

Only people with little MMORPG experience, who only knew EQ/WoW clones, can think a gear grind is the only way to make a MMORPG “end game”. Any veteran who played those games since UO or before know WoW only took the easy route, and that there are many more ways to make a good MMORPG.

And this isn’t a sandbox.

If this were a sandbox, you’d have a valid argument, alas, it’s not. It’s not for that type market.

I’d suggest you go give Darkfall : Unholy Wars a try later this month if that’s what you are looking for.

AC1 wasn’t a sandbox yet didn’t have a gear grind either. Your argument doesn’t hold any water, except showing how limited your vision about what a MMORPG can be is.
Don’t limit what is possible to the limits of your own imagination.

I’m not the game designer.

This game has clearly been produced for the WoW era.

Unfortunately, imagination doesn’t pay the bills. If it did, we’d not be having this discussion in the first place, because their horizontal gear model would be working, and thriving.

Obviously, it’s not.

Clearly? Well, according to any promise made before release, along with the manifesto, the game was produced as a kick in the hornet’s nest compared to the stagnating market of (failing) WoW clones.

And about the second part of your post, you are assuming a lot. The game is a smashing success, with huge sales, and nowhere near your “obviously it’s not” assumption.

If this gear inflation really makes it into the game, I’ll be the one laughing at the likes of you, when the game merges servers and reduces content patches to focus on cash shop sales, because all those who believed in the manifesto have left the game.

Mark my words. Keep a link to my post if you want.

jboynton asks: “How does GW2 maintain its position as a revenue driver without that income in future quarters?”

How does aborting the design manifesto – which, arguably, drove those sales in the first place – help raise revenue from a game that has no subscription? Are hardcore players the top consumers of cash shop items? I doubt it. Are hardcore gear-grinders going to produce the same kind of B2P expansion sales (when one comes out) as launch? If ANET alienates everyone who bought GW2 because of that manifesto, and because of the non-grind “whole-world” end game philosophy, what are those expansion sales going to be?

It seems to me we’re witnessing a potential SWG moment here; ANET can alienate everyone who came here specifically because of what GW2 was billed as, promised to be, and for three months now has delivered by changing the core nature of the game. And for what? Players that endlessly run from game to game seeking a means to satiate a never-ending quest for avatar progression/power?

This post cannot be stated enough. This is the crux of the matter.

Bottom line: You can’t change human nature, there is a need for a carrot and skins were not it.

People played and still play games like UO or AC1, which are without a gear carrot. It’s WoW (and EQ) and its clones who made people feel they can’t play games for fun anymore, but that they need some kind of virtual purple item at the end of a grind instead.

Generalizations are always bad, even when you are knowing the topic you make the generalization about quite well. They are even worse when you don’t know the topic, aka when the only possible MMO model for you is a gear grind based WoW clone.

I don’t mind the idea about ascended gear just to be able (with the use of infusion slots) to play certain or future high-end dungeons.

But I don’t see the need to give ascended gear higher stats than exotic – because if it’s coming like this you need that gear to stay up-to-date in WvWvW…

Pretty much my opinion too. The ascended gear should have the same stats than existing exotics, and then the infusions should give an advantage, but only against a very specific foe or in a specific situation. This way, there would be intensive to get that new gear while not making everything crafted, looted or from older dungeons totally obsolete, and without forcing people down an unique path, that new dungeon, if they want to gear up.
I made a suggestion about this on the suggestion forum.

Why not do like Asheron's Call for Ascended gear?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Korrigan.4837

Korrigan.4837

Let me tell you guys how an old game, Asheron’s Call (1), dealed with this.

The best gear of the game was available from random drops and then upgrading with crafting. Every play style could get that best gear without ever doing something they don’t want to do. And then that’s it – you were geared.
Now the quests/dungeons still rewarded unique items you could not get through another method – but those items were meant for specific uses. E.g. you could have a staff which does additional damage against specific mobs, but which is overall (stats, armor, etc..) not as good as the staves from the best gear.
I played AC1 for 5+ years, it works. And guess what, people still grouped a lot for those special quests/dungeons to get the special items, AC1 was actually way more “social” than any modern EQ/WoW clone. The important thing is that even if you didn’t own those special usage items, you were not “inferior” to those who owned them. And you definitely were not “inferior” in PvP.

The problem I see with the GW2 implementation compared to the AC1 one is that in GW2, the items seem to be made for a specific use through those infusions, but they also have better stats than any exotic item available. That should not be. If anything, those infusions should give an advantage for specific content, but be worse than exotics for general usage. This way, it would not screw up PvP, it would not screw up people not wanting to farm dungeons, and also important, it would not screw up crafters.

What they are trying to do CAN work. But in its actual implementation, it’s just a new gear tier, and it also makes all crafted, dungeon and WvW gear obsolete.

So my suggestion is to use the AC1 model. Make those new items have same or worse stats than exotics, but make them better for a specific usage, aka that new dungeon and those new enemies. This way, the overall gear balance of the game is not broken, PvP balance is not broken between the haves and have nots, and yet there’s till intensive to get that new different gear.

After reading the blog entry, it’s now obvious that this is a total betrayal of the manifesto and of what has been promised about this game. And if it wasn’t bad enough, there’s a single place to get that gear, that single dungeon.

I gave 80+ Euros to the shop in addition to the digital deluxe edition purchase. Well, I won’t ever give a cent for this game again if this goes live. This is more than a slippery slope, this is a new tier of forced dungeon gear, and than less than 3 months after the release of the game. If that’s what the game is heading for, well, there are other games which do dungeons grinds better than this one.

Disappointed, but I’ll see what comes of it.

One of the perks of not having to pay a monthly subscription is that there’s really no “quitting,” except for writing the game off permanently as a protest.

Well, I’ve “invested” like 50+ Euros in the cash shop for now, because I wanted to support the game. Add a stat grind of any kind, and they won’t ever get a cent from me again.

EDIT: actually, I gave 20 Euros during the last beta week end, 50 more in september/october, and 10 more this month for now. That’s 80 Euros I think (not sure, could be 10 less or more, I don’t count that kind of stuff). I’m ready to give more if they honor what they promised and what I enjoy about the game. I find it stunning that ArenaNet doesn’t realize…the whiners will NEVER be satisfied. They will never be happy. You add a bit higher stats, and a week from now they will be decked out in new gear and back to complaining that there’s nothing to do and nothing to strive for. If they are missing the point now, they will continue to miss the point no matter how much you try to cater to them.

They will never be happy. Those players that were happy, are now going to feel betrayed due to your obvious desire to cater to others at the expense of what we enjoy.

Maybe they’ll add a new tier of stats every month. It still won’t stop the whining, their player base will shrink significantly, and they’ll sit back and act dumbfounded as to how it could have happened. “We listened to our players!” No you didn’t. You listened to people who never liked your game, and never will, and allowed them to dictate the subversion of your design philosophy. It’s a shame.

This is a pretty accurate assessment of the situation. As a MMORPG veteran myself – UO beta, MUDs before), I can tell you that you’re right, and hopefully ANet will realize that too before it’s too late.

so if they add 10 more lvls in next expansion you all leave too?

becouse lvl 80 exotics will be crap

That’s very different. Once you did the 10 levels, you craft new exotics and you are ok again. No treadmill to go through to be competitive, which was promised by the developers during the whole development phase of the game. No single way to get the best gear. Every play style is competitive. That was promised.

What we have here is the best gear of the game only available through ONE game system – and that’s this new dungeon. Does this ring a bell to any of you? Yeah, that’s tiered gear grinding just like WoW and its clones. That’s the beginning of the slippery slope. Tier 2. Force people into one dungeon (aka raid tier) to get better gear.

This is actually betrayal. This goes against the game’s manifesto that was released during development.

If I want to grind gear, I can play WoW. Please be VERY careful with what you’re going to do here, ANet. I for one promise that I will NEVER inject one more cent into this game if you add a gear treadmill to it.

Make them random, dynamic. Make players explore the world, solve riddles, to find the treasures, kind of scavenger hunt like. Make it so that each map is dynamically generated and unique. Make some require a group, to get people together.

The riddles during the Halloween event to find the tomes are a good example of what can be done in GW2, please expand this. Make us find those treasure maps on mobs, in puzzle chests, and you can also sell them in your shop of course.

Why not? more things to do besides the usual grind are always welcome. Plus it’ll encourage people to visit maps they don’t usually go to.

Exactly. GW2 needs more fluff activities. Fishing, housing, eventually mounts, stuff players can look forward to collect. “Surprise” activities like random treasure maps, possibly even made dynamic so you have to roam the world to find the treasure, and no map is like the other, and even group treasure maps where you need to defeat a boss with help at the end before you can grab the treasure.

The more variety the better. And a GW2 developer recently said they want such a broad range of activities that when you log in, you wonder what do to so many choices you have.

2 regional servers against one English server

It’s the second week my server fights against two French servers. I’ve nothing against French people since I’m one myself (playing on English servers because I like to meet different people), but seriously, ANet, can’t you see how wrong that is? Two FR or two DE servers will ALWAYS ally against the third server, even without any communication between them. This situation should never happen in WvsW.

Thanks for reading.

I usually don’t like to whine about my color blindness (a game doesn’t have to adapt to every handicap and/or disease), but I’d love to be able to change the color of the AOE effect red circles on the floor, and eventually also to make those circles more visible and/or thicker. That’s my only problem in this game with color.

I just want to know if Anet is actually working on this.. cus srsly sometimes we need to check if the member is active or not .. and this option “Last seen online” would be helpful x.x .. my guild is 200+ Members and we need more control about active members or not.
Do you guys think it’s a good idea?

I posted that suggestion a couple of days ago – and I agree, such a feature would be VERY useful.

Something I wonder about is how they managed to find you in that huge world. Even if they manage to find in which zone you are, zones are huge too, would be quite hard to find a single player in them.

I’m not defending that behavior if the story is true, but you could have easily avoided further grief by simply moving to any area of your level or below and keep playing. I doubt they would have insisted much if they had to find you in a huge zone.

PvP happens in a puzzle in a PvP area… is that right? Of course it is, that’s the way it should be. It doesn’t negate the fact that siege engines in those puzzle are overpowered, not fitting, and should be forbidden, not to mention they also permit griefing towards one’s own side.

These threads are exactly why people do it. Puzzle campers don’t know if the people they are stopping are PvE players getting their backside hurt by the camper’s actions but they hope beyond all hope that they are.

Basically, every puzzle camper out there reading this just had their day made a little better by your sweet, sweet, whiny tears.

So you mean that because there are bullies, cheaters and exploiters out there, we shouldn’t complain about it because it may make them happy?
If we only listened to people like you, we would still live in caves, eat raw meat and pull unshaved hairy women in some corner to ensure the reproduction of our “specie”…

As leader of a guild myself (well, we have a collegial lead of elders, but I’m the one holding the guild), I think that multi-guild system is a big mistake and should never have been added to any MMORPG. Our guild has a rule in the charter against multi-guilding.
I don’t know how someone at ANet can have had such an utterly stupid idea.

I agree. It’s also in our rules (which seems like most respectable guilds worth their salt enforce) for each member to represent only that guild. Now when guild members agree to that, join, then later get invited to a larger guild, what do you think they do?

They join and represent the larger one without thinking twice. It’s horribly destructive and I’ve seen more than a small number of good guilds fall victim to this. It creates a horrible mentality and attitude in the members of said guild and ultimately people will flock elsewhere for whatever reasons and not even think twice, care, or let anybody know.

Most don’t even Gquit they just stop representing indefinitely as if that guild is potentially a safety net if the guild they’re currently representing has an issue and they need to again re-represent elsewhere.

Well, to be honest, in other games, people will just /gquit and join the bigger guild.

That’s not the “real” far shiverpeaks, it’s just a small area around Eye of the North so the landscape doesn’t abruptly ends. There’s nothing there, no mobs, no trees, and it’s obviously not meant to be explored. TBH, don’t waste your time trying to go there.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Korrigan.4837

Sigh. If they’re building arrow carts up there, use the standard counter to arrow carts and destroy them before running the puzzle.

What’s the standard counter to arrow carts? Ballista/catapult out of their range. It’s WvW, if they’re defending something with siege, you need to attack it with siege.

Try that when they have a balista up there too… good luck building your balista then.

Siege engines should be forbidden in puzzles, and that’s it. Everything else is fair game, but sieges are not fitting that place, are not balanced for that place.

And building a siege on the top of a chest to stop people of your own side from reaching it should of course be very harshly punished, at least a long term ban if not a permanent ban. It’s obvious, intentional griefing, and not PvP here.

Stealth - Finish Them!, Needs to go.

Korrigan.4837

Removing Quickness and Stealth from finishing opponents would completely unbalance Thief. Thieves CAN’T finish people reliably without those abilities. We are extremely squishy, and we have a hard time finishing people if they have teammates around even with these tools. If you took them away, then Thieves would not be able to finish people after downing them, which would not be balanced.

You may want to try to play something else than a thief before posting such nonsense. If thieves are squishy while finishing people, what should cloth wearers say?
We understand it’s hard to lose some OP abilities, some people are just happy to be able to faceroll people, but for the sake of balance, some thief abilities need urgent modifications. And the ability to finish people while invisible and quickened is one of those.

people will be rude. suck it up and stop crying.

I was always of the opinion that those trying to defend such behaviors, or just say “suck it up”, are those who commit such offenses.

Such behavior is not tolerable and should be very harshly punished, at least 1 week ban in my opinion. People who don’t respect others should get the message that this will not be tolerated in this game. That’s how you built a good community.

Indeed, you should not be able to finish in stealth, and quickness should not affect the finish movement. But the thief class being OP is nothing new, it’s just the same than stealth classes in most if not all other MMOs which have them.

In other MMORPGs, the guild roster has a column containing the last time a guildie logged in (1 hours, 2 days, 1 month, 5 months, etc…). It makes it easy to assess how many very active members the guild has. It would be nice if GW2 had such a feature too.

Welcome….and GW2 is a good game. Regardless of the negativity that seems to permeate these forums.

People enjoying the game are for most playing it, and not wasting hours to post on forums. That’s why all forums are usually more negative, it definitely doesn’t reflect the reality of what happens in game.
And of course, there’s always that very “vocal minority” only posting to get some attention… and what gets more attention than bashing a game on its own website? ;-)

doesn’t make any sense.

Maybe some people are confusing “friend” with “acquaintance”… I’m more picky with who I call “my friend”, it’s not just some random stranger met during an event who rezzed me or talked with me nicely 2 minutes. And the people I call “friends” (with a couple of them being “real life friends”) are all playing on the same server than me
