Dungeons are different from guild events. Dungeons don’t require influence to be activated.

Your contradicting your self though. You say being in a small guild is a consequence so get used to it. I know I am in a small guild. That wont change. Seriously why do you want the costs to come down. You can easily work and get upgrades etc with 20-30 people. see below:

30 people log on in a day gets you 1500 influence. if they have multiple characters then an extra 50 per character. This doesn’t include events and activities that gain influence. You could be potentially earning 4k+ influence a day. So why say you want costs reduced when its obvious your guild aint small and in your opinion you don’t need it reduced.

I don’t contradict myself at all. Even with 30 members, the costs are high, and I imagine the pain for smaller guilds, so I support a cost reduction. We can deal with the actual costs if really needed, but that doesn’t stop me from being empathic with people in smaller guilds.

Like I said the rest of us with 10 or less members do. as it will take us approximately4/5 times longer to get than your guild.

That’s the point you’re missing… even if they halve the costs, it will still take you 4/5 times longer to get. The only solution would be to make the costs insignificant, but that would defeat the purpose of unlocking guild events, which is working together towards a goal.

And then there’s also the problem of how small can a guild be… if you adjust the costs for 10 man guilds, the 5 man ones will start complaining until the costs is adjusted to them… and they you will have the 2 man “wife and husband” guilds crying they can’t unlock the events and want it adjusted to them too.

Slippery slope.

And as a final note, I personally don’t give a toss about the gear. I just don’t like that small guilds are faced with such an overly massive obstacle to reach a chance at content and then be called leeches for reluctantly joining bigger guilds just to try it out.

Let’s be clear once and for all about this. A small guild member changing his mind and joining a bigger guild, or recruiting more people, is in no way a “leech”. But a guy representing a small guild 99% of the time and just switching to a larger guild when comes event time without ever having participated in building up the guild’s community and of course, gaining the required influence, is indeed a “leech”.
Or call him an opportunist if you prefer.

I am sorry and I am sure people will agree with me here. You are not getting the point. I have read all your posts and it is driving me mad. You obviously come from a big guild with 20-30 members but please go back and read other posts. Most people like myself are in guilds with 10 or less members and we don’t want to join big guilds as we just want a close knit guild with friends. And it is these guilds that are missing out.

20-30 members isn’t big. We actually are a quite “close knit” guild and we are quite picky with our recruitment. Everyone knows each other, and I’m actually glad of being part of a community with so many nice members and which extends beyond the limits of the game too.

If you choose to stay with 10 members, you have to accept the consequences… and that is that it will take you 3x the time it would take a 30 member guild to gain the same amount of influence.

Should ANet reduce the cost of the new guild events? Yes, I definitely think they should. But even if they do, your small guild will STILL be much slower than a larger guild to unlock the stuff. That’s the price to pay for not wanting to try and meet other people and just wanting to stick with known friends. In games like MMORPGs, people get rewarded for taking the “risk” to meet new people.

Let me know when ascended earrings and amulets drop in fractals mmk?

Let me know when those are required to play the game.

20-30 is not small especially if you are active. It wont take you long to get influence for guild missions. You see things in your own perspective. You need to open your eyes and see the bigger picture. Sounds like you don’t give a coot bout anyone else or the guild missions. I think you should just be quiet now lol.

Seriously have you read the posts my guild is not the only one….. Open your eyes.

Come on guys stick up for me here and jump on this band wagon… We all know issues. Ideas are good and always have been just need a quick fix once ANET listen to people. But we all agree this should have been done beforehand.

So come on guys get on this band wagon and tell korrigan he is wrong…..

Maybe you should use your own advice and start reading my posts completely before answering. Notably the part where I said ANet should reduce the costs for unlocking the guild events. Open your eyes.

since ascended gear isn’t required except if you are into high level fractal farming… and if you are into that, the ascended gear you get from fractals is enough, you do not need the laurel gear.

Do you read what you post?

Absolutely. We have a guild mate who made it to high fractal level without any laurel gear. Laurel gear isn’t required to play the game. He was level 20+ November 28, so he’s much higher today, I’ll ask him what level exactly when I catch him online.

Suggestion: All that is needed for small guilds to not feel left out is to put the very lowest tier of each type of Guild Mission behind a lower unlock threshold, while keeping the higher tiers behind progressively more expensive unlock thresholds.

This sounds like the right thing to do indeed :-)

Suggestion: The easiest solution is to introduce lower-tiered Guild Missions that can be done with five people. For example, a Guild Bounty that requires finding and defeating only 1 Champion in 15 minutes. Or a Guild Rush that is balanced for 5 active participants. These should offer accordingly low rewards, of course, but should still allow players to earn Guild Commendations and the guild to acquire Guild Merits.

It would no longer be guild activities, but just group activities then… and the next step is guild not even having 5 members wanting ANet to dumb down the content even more to fit their size.
This said, the game already has an automatic scaling system for dynamic events, this could just be applied to guild events too.

2, I was raising the concern that small guild fractal players have to resort to other means to get the items they want for the content they like, which seems wrong to me. It’s like forcing people in WoW to win the weekly fishing competition in order to get parts of the raiding gear.

You’re not making much sense here… it’s you who talked about a strawman in your previous post?

In WoW, and I’m an avid player of that game for the last 8 years with two active accounts, people who raid are also forced to farm for many things… like food, as you mention it, and fishing is actually almost mandatory for any serious raider. You also need enchanting materials, leather for leg armor, gems, etc…, or you need gold to buy those things, which still requires farming outside of your raid activities.
Just like any other MMORPG, GW2 requires people to participate in different activities. But none of those and mandatory, since ascended gear isn’t required except if you are into high level fractal farming… and if you are into that, the ascended gear you get from fractals is enough, you do not need the laurel gear.

I’ve ran guilds of over 200 members in the past and I do not want that level of stress, nor do I wish to go out and mass recruit only to have a massive job of keeping all of those people happy and content in my guild, thus forefeiting my own game enjoyment.

Except that you do not need 200 members to gain influence at a reasonable speed in GW2. With 20 to 30 active members, you are just fine.
We don’t invite everybody we see on public chat, we have a recruitment process with required application, since we try to maintain a community, and not just a group of people who use each other to get shinies in the game, yet we have 30ish active members and the influence builds up just fine. You don’t have to recruit everyone like a madman and make a mess of a guild in order to have enough members, friendly people are out there, everywhere, you just have to find them, and them to find you.

50 ecto just comes out of bloody nowhere. That’s like 15 gold now. In addition to the amount of dailies and monthlies.

Last time I checked (that’s one minute ago), the ascended gear you get from laurels doesn’t require any single “ecto”.
Other thing… ascended gear isn’t required to play the game EXCEPT if you do fractals to a high level. Guess what? I don’t have a single ascended piece yet. Full exotic works just fine for most of the content, ascended only gives a marginal stat increase.
I’m a very casual player, but you won’t see me asking ANet or any other MMO company to add stuff just for me to get easily by playing just 1 hour. If something I want is harder to get, well, it will just take more time. The game is going nowhere, and will still be there next month, at least it gives me long term objectives.

And no, 40 laurels (1 monthly and 30 dailies) + 50 ecto is not an acceptable alternative.

And what would be acceptable? ATM like machines in Lion’s Arch which give out Ascended gear for 10 copper each?
The ascended gear available with laurels can be achieved by any play style in a reasonable time frame, there’s no forced grouping, no forced dungeoning, and now that the dailies are customizable, by doing most of the usual in game activities. You can’t expect ANet to give out gear for just sitting near the bank in Lion’s Arch either…

Mungrul raised a good point.

As a leader, if someone joins my guild just to get to participate in the guild events but doesn’t represent the guild to earn the influence required to start those events, he will get in trouble and will most likely get the boot if he doesn’t change is behavior.

I have a word for that kind of behavior – it’s called a “leech”. And I don’t like leeches. Want to benefit from the size of my guild? You better also participate in building it.

Elitism, and a profound lack of a sense of community rolled into one

And how to you call a person who just joins a community for the benefits of it without ever participating in that community otherwise?
Self entitlement, much? You deserve the rewards while others work to get them?
If refusing to do all the work for other to only reap the benefits is being elitist in your book, them I’m proud to be one.

@Korrigan, they may well join your guild to participate in these events because they feel their small guild is unable to raise the required revenue. If they communicate this to your leadership will you really kick them if they don’t represent you 24/7? Maybe a little understanding on your part would then see them represent you for some of the week in order to participate in the accumulation of your influence. Dear Lord, it’s hard enough that this content is gated for them by Anet, don’t Guild Gate it as well!

In my world, people can’t simply reap without ever participating in sowing too. Be it in a game or not. If someone only joins a big guild to get the rewards of the guild events, without representing the guild to help enabling those events, then he’s a dead weight, a leech. And what annoys me even more is that he’s not even part of the guild community, he’s only there for the trinkets, the shinies, the rewards. Not the kind of members I enjoy having in my guild, sorry. I enjoy having guild mates who play with me, make our guild chat live, socialize, you know, people who may become my friends, and not people who are just there to use everyone else to get shiny trinkets in the game.

While I agree that the current guild event system needs some tweaking, some behaviors are just not acceptable if you want to maintain a good community in your guild. And if I allowed some people to just jump in to reap benefits of what my current members worked for, the members wouldn’t be happy at all.

Alleged reasoning, and amateur suggestions aside. Here are the facts:

Condition builds are useless in PvE. and No good dungeon party will allow any condition players into their party, because they are a waste of a party slot.

For someone pretending not be an amateur and using such a… “professorial” tone, you don’t seem very well informed. Too many condition based characters won’t work well together if they use the same type of condition. For instance, 3 bleed warriors will easily cap the bleeds to 25 all the time and like half of the damage will be lost. But condition builds are fine if there’s only one or eventually two of the same type.

See, but all the other conditions are hopelessly outclassed for damage. Bleed lets you put around 2.5-3K DPS on a target with max stacks. Burning gets you maybe 800 or so DPS. Poison is difficult to get over 200 damage per tick. That’s it for conditions. Bleed really has to form the core of your condition damage, or you’re going to be doing very, very little damage overall. For that reason, you should only ever bring one condition character — because a “condition character” by definition should be nearly-capping Bleeds to do significant damage.

You know that bleeds are NOT the only form of condition damage, right?

It is not possible to be good at videogames with less than 12 hours per day.

You can’t be serious here, right?

Back when I was raiding in WoW, 4 nights a week for 4 hours, and we were number one guild on our server clearing all the heroic raid content, it was still 16 hours… per week. Add to this the same amount to farm for materials for food, enchants and gold, and you get to 32 hours per week, which is like 4:40 hours per day. The non-raid stuff was mostly done during week ends too.

Playing well and playing hardcore as in 8+ hours a day is something totally different. People who play well don’t need to play hardcore.

Well, just play PvE like you play PvP.
That’s how GW2 works.

The lack of dedicated healer and also the lack of the artificial threat based taunt tanking system gives more responsibilities for every player in a group. In a real fight, you can bet the enemy won’t go for the strongest armored opponent who has a healer keeping him at full health. They will most likely go to the weakest link, just like enemies in GW2 do.

The thing is, dedicated players are the reason MMOs live and prosper. Casual players, especially in a game like gw2, tend to leave and return from time to time.

This couldn’t be more wrong. The hardcore are a small minority. The vast majority are people who can’t afford playing a game 8 hours a day, those who pay for the MMORPG the hardcore play are the casual. That’s true in GW2, but that’s also true in all other MMORPG, including the “mighty” WoW. Blizzard understood that well by adding more and more casual content to their game, last being the raid finder, allowing to see the raid content without having to schedule several evenings per week around a video game like if it was a second job.

Fact is, without casuals to pay the majority of the developer’s bills, the hardcore would have no game at all to play.

Also, the belief that casuals “come and go” couldn’t be more wrong. When they find a good game they enjoy, they will stay for a long time. Actually, since they consume content slower than the “8 hours a day” hardcores, they will take longer until they finished it. When a hardcore will have 3 level 80 and be bored, a casual will just have finished his first 80 and will start to equip him and do some level 80 content, along with rolling his first alt.

Hardcore are those who constantly complain that they have no content, when they actually burned themself out of the game. Not casuals.

And I see the doom conspiracy crowd is here in force – not talking about the OP – the poster above me is right, a mod should do something, but against those who spread those rumors based on no evidence that the game is not doing well or being doomed. I really hope not. MMORPGs are social games, and socialization and cooperation should be encouraged and even required for some content, like dungeons. GW2 already has a ton of solo content, you can even get the best gear of the game 100% solo. I don’t want fake group mates ruin the group content the game has.

Want to play 100% solo? You have excellent games like Skyrim which are made for that. But if you play in an online world, you will have to accept having to play with others for some content. Be social. It’s rewarding, you may even make a few friends.

My favorite solution would of course be a “night brightness” slider which is not the gamma, since gamma also affects the User Interface, but a gamma based solution is maybe easier for the developers since it already exists in game.
I really think it’s a rather simple thing to add code wise and it would provide a big immersion improvement for those of us who value that aspect.

With a gamma of 1.00, the day looks awesome in game, but the night is just not a night, it’s not dark enough.
With a gamma of 0.75, the night looks awesome, but the day is too dark and looks like an eternal sunset.

My suggestion would be to give us two gamma sliders in the settings, and when you switch to night, you also progressively switch to night gamma. This way, those who like it as it is actually wouldn’t be affect, but those of us who would like a bit more “realism” and immersion could just adjust the setting to their liking.

6 to 8 hours a day is not casual. Only someone too young to have responsibilities or who is unemployed can afford to play video games that much every single day of the week. All I have to say is that ANet should be UTTERLY careful with nerfs of any kind right now. This game in its current state needs more content, more diverse activities, more ways to have fun… it does NOT need reasons for players to stop playing, and nerfing obviously has a high risk of causing that. If the class a player got used to is suddenly not fun anymore, there’s a high chance the player will just stop playing.

Not to mention most of the complains against AOE are due to the ignorance and/or lack of skill of the complainer in playing the game. Yeah, just stand there while a warrior does his 100 blades on you instead of moving away, and then complain the skill is overpowered… typical.

Last but not least, starting nerfs when some damage types are still broken is not very smart. Yeah, condition damage, I’m looking at you. Fix the bugs first, and then look for eventual remaining imbalances.

ANet isn’t going to add mounts to the game, ever!

They never said that. Ever.

Incoming Mounts??

The irrational fear of mounts of some people is really surprising…
Let’s review the “reasons” invoked against mounts…

  • First, the worst one. Mounts will turn this game into WoW.
Any veteran MMORPG player will tell you mounts existed in those games way before WoW even existed as alpha prototype. For instance, UO had mounts. Yes, my young friends, there were MMORPGs before WoW, and very good ones too, with mounts.
  • Mounts will ruin the world.
More irrational fear not backed up by any facts. While flying mounts often if not always ruin game worlds because it makes them feel empty since everyone is hovering above it, ground mounts don’t have that problem. People on mounts are still in the world, can still be seen by others, can still be hailed after being seen.
  • Mounts will ruin Dynamic Events (aka “DEs”).
Actually, this couldn’t be more wrong. If anything, mounts will make more people encounter those events when riding around… you don’t understand why? Pretty simple… what gives one more chances to encounter an events while in the world, instantly teleporting from point A to point B, or riding from point A to point B? Yeah, you got it, mounts keep the player in the world way more than teleporting between waypoints. And the more people are in the world, the higher the chance they encounter a Dynamic Event.
  • Mounts can be used for griefing. The solution for that is simple, just make mounts impossible to use in any capital city, and make NPC name plates show through mounts. This argument is also quite nonsensical, since there are many other mechanics in this game that can be used for griefing… and removing them would make the game much less fun.

This game desperately needs features like mounts. Ground mounts only of course. The game needs diversity in the possible activities proposed to the players, and collecting mounts is a favorite for many. Not to mention the juicy profit ANet could make by putting mounts in the cash shop too.

My take:

  • Mounts should give a speed increase, but not more than the fastest speed buff available without a mount, which is 25% I believe.
  • Mounts should not be available in World vs World or sPvP, for obvious reasons.
  • Mounts would also not work in any of the capital cities, also for obvious reasons.
  • Mobs should have a chance to dismount you, not too annoying, but also not allowing you to rush through a thick pack of mobs unharmed. The solution of LOTRO where the mount has a health bar is quite excellent.
  • Mounts could have a special skill bar with mount specific skills, changing depending on the mount type, which would permit different mounts to have different advantages.

I personally think ground mounts could bring a lot to this game, and the skill system is tailor made to support mounts too. They would mean more things to do for players, and more potential income for ANet. And those who really don’t want to use them aren’t forced to anyway.

Next gw2 Expansion Class?

Let me check, based on the typical Dungeon and Dragons roles… we have Warriors which fill the typical heavy plate Fighter role, Guardians which fill the Paladin style role, Elementalists which fill the Mage style role, Rangers which fill the… Ranger role, Necromancers which fill the Warlock style role, Mesmer which kinda fill the Psionic role, Thief are of course the Rogues, and Engineers are the Artificers.

The game could use a Druid and/or Shaman style class (tuned with nature, morphing abilities), and Monk class (hand to hand fighter in light armor), and possibly a Cleric style class (a caster relying on divine spells rather than on raw elemental magic).

why do league of legend and dota and starcraft are popular online games?

bragging.

mmos are meant for softies…
its a shame, especially at “endgame”; it should be more intense.

If you look for something else than “softies”, you should stick to “real life”…
People hiding behind a keyboard and a screen in a video game are in no way “kitten” or “hardcore”, or whatever other “bragging” expression.

Well, I personally never was impressed by people bragging about what they do in video games, it’s been 30+ years I’ve been playing those games just for the fun of it.
Most achievements in those other games worth “bragging for”, supposedly, only show the person having them needs to focus less on games and more on his “real” life anyway.

You want replayability?

1. When you complete a heart, it becomes blue and you can complete it again once a day for a “heart token”. With a lot of those tokens, you can check a trader and buy exclusive rewards such as skins/minis/black lion keys/legendary components/ascended components/skill points/karma/money…

I doubt that will ever happen for black lion keys and minis – they have to keep some things “store exclusive” to generate some income for the game.

I don’t really see “doing the same content over and over again” as “replayability”. That’s more like a grind. Replayability, to me, is more when you can level alts doing as much different content as possible.

Add a "slider" for night luminosity

Korrigan.4837

The maximum setting would be like now, with little difference between night and day, but we would have the option to reduce that setting and make nights darker (aka more “realistic”, so to speak). I don’t think it would be very hard to implement and it would be a nice simple option for those of us who value more immersion.

Thanks for reading!

Kinda related to this topic, what I would like is them to make nights darker. Right now there’s barely any difference of luminosity at all.

I don’t understand why people are so against “elitism” but don’t have any issues with leachers.
Unless it’s the leachers themselves who object DPS-meters and inspect features.

I’m no leecher, I don’t even own magic find gear, but I’m strictly against an “inspect” feature. To avoid the leechers and other nuisances which are inevitable in MMO communities, I stick mostly to guild groups or people on my friend list.

It’s rather have them remove the stupid “magic find” stat. Or make “magic find” an enchant you can buy with Karma and that you can put on any gear you want to without affecting the other stats.

“Agro” meters don’t make any sense in this game since there’s no traditional agro table.

About a DPS meter… well, eventually, if it was only for personal info only visible to yourself, to ameliorate your own gameplay. But it’s wasted developer time only breeding elitism in my opinion.

And about an “inspect” feature… another feature that breeds elitism and therefore should never be added to this game.

I’m going to quote a forum post you made yesterday to explain it to you.

“You aren’t banned without reason. You are banned because you break the terms, which you read when you accept them on account creation.

End of story."

Since it’s yourself who explained this, it should be clear enough ;-)

Why not make more dungeons and like raids or sort of?

Korrigan.4837

I want to also add that while we are talking about “fight mechanics”, arenanet needs to get more creative and not just add tons of HP and one-shot abilities. Taking 5-10 minutes to kill a dungeon boss wouldn’t be all that bad if the mechanics were a bit more interesting than “stay out of red circles, and kite the boss”.

They do that in Fractals already. And indeed, I’d rather have them improve on that concept for 5 man dungeons.

Korrigan.4837

I’m even against 10 man raids. As I said, 5 people are easy to get “on the fly”, even in smaller guilds. 10 man are already harder to get together, and will require organization and scheduling. Not to mention that 10 man dungeons will mean 10 man dungeon gear, which will become the best gear, and therefore forcing people to do those 10 man dungeons to remain competitive.

Fair question. This is because anything open world can be joined in by anyone. Whether they be a fresh lvl 80 or an experienced dungeoner. For the content to be challenging enough the fear of failure must be a large part. So when someone new to 80 comes a long and does things wrong (no hate for him, hes just new) he will cause the event to fail. Therefore the challenge of the encounter is very random depending on who joins.

See my previous post (the one following what you quoted). Other games, like EQ, didn’t have raids in instances, yet still provided highly challenging large group content.

There is no need for large group content to be instanced, imo. That is the most exclusionary concept of raids.

Exactly. 5 man dungeons are fine with the GW2 model which doesn’t have that kitten trinity. What they need to do is to add more dungeons like Fractals, and upgrade the other dungeons so all bosses have interesting mechanics like the Fractals ones.
Keep the large group content in the open world. Hell, add more non-instanced dungeons in the open world. I’m not talking about jumping puzzles here, but dungeons you have to fight through but where everybody can enter. Remember EQ when it came out? Raids were not instanced. AC1 had no instanced dungeons at all. Yet those games managed to still add very challenging content.
WoW is not the only MMORPG, and also not the first one. There’s more than grinding instances to a MMORPG.

I think I know the answer… it is mechanics and group coordination. I dare say that most of the current content, be it current dungeons or open-world, does not require a lot of either. I believe when the players say, “We want raids!”, they actually want complicated/fun fights that requires a larger group of players to coordinate with each-other and actually think about what they’re doing. A lot of the current content could fill this void, but doesn’t in execution… IE zerg fest/corpse run.

ANet has shown with Fractals that they can make 5 man content that requires group coordination. There’s no need for more people.
Actually, challenging 5 man content without the ability to “rez zerg”, like Fractals, can be way harder than any 10 or 25 man raid, because with only 5 men, everyone has more weight and any mistakes way bigger repercussions. If 1 guy out of 25 dies, it’s usually no big deal… If 1 guy out of 5 dies, the group just lost 20% of its members, which has a much bigger impact on the battle.
