Reap The Weak[Reap] – WvW 5-man havok
-Blackgate
@Oak I added in the spotter trait, I agree that it is the more viable option.
Conflicting sigils is definitely weird. The celerity I sort of get, but might as well lose perception since you’ll never have a chance to charge it.
I think a LB would be a lot more useful on swap. Barrage does a lot more damage than people are willing to admit, and does a semi decent job of breaking up the tightness of a zerg. RF is going to be a beast after tomorrow. Hunter’s shot is again semi decent at breaking up zergs, although probably less so than even a cripple due to stability spam.
I added entangle, and not muddy terrain, but both are REALLY good at breaking up zergs. The idea is not to lock anyone down permanently, just break up the zerg. I find that using those skills almost always results in at least one kill. This is probably pretty variable for who you’re facing. If you see a bunch of the same guild tags as you approach the enemy zerg, put RaO on. If it’s mostly a PUG zerg, MT and entangle are just absolutely lethal.
With those in mind, I threw this together.

Celerity and Perception are not conflicting, you can charge them both. you just cant stack attribute sigils stacks. Entangle is not good at all in large zerg fights, the roots get insta-destroyed. This is specifically designed for melee train, so if you wanted to use LB to build stacks that is fine, but you should not be using anything but GS while in the melee train.
Your build is good and quite similar to what I use sometimes in a zerg. Though some improvements could easily be made:
Use Spotter instead of Beastmaster’s Might for better group support. Healing Spring is a must in a zerg build. Safe your healing spring for regroup, if you can. Your ranger will survive a hard fight much longer than an ele and your team will be greatful for your water field. Also healing spring already heals more than heal as one when combined with one blast or leap finisher and staying inside for one second. Additionally you can give vigor to your group with the healing spring and Vigorous Renewal. Shared Anguish is not a good skill because it seldomly triggers and you have a good stability uptime anyway.Use only drakes and bears. With good movement and pet control your pets will survive even hard fights because they benefit from your signets as well. Also use one mass damage pet for your RaO and might stacking. I would advice you to murrelow or river drake. Murrelow has a poison field wich is perfect to be placed in enemy regroups and water fields to reduce their healing. River drake has a blast finisher directly after switching pets and Lightning Breath hits 15 targets within 1 1/2 sec which is also a good burst damage to be used after using SotW.
As runes, I would advice to take Melandru and as food Lemongrass Poultry Soup because you have little condition remove. Otherwise you are dependant on having a good guard in your group.
After the patch the build will change to have even mote Stability uptime:

I thought I already had vigorous renewal instead of shared anguish. Must have missed that, i’ll edit it. I don’t know what Tier you are in WvW, but i’ve never had my pet live more than about 1 minute in a blob and our fights can last 10-15 minutes. And generally movement isn’t up to me, like any good melee train player you need to stay directly on commander. Of course Melandru and Lemongrass is better, but I made this build on the affordable side. I agree on healing spring, it is actually my favorite heal in the game. However, from my experience I need a good emergency burst heal, but yeah they both certainly work. I’ll put it this way, if I was on TS and could call healing spring I would use it (which I often do), but if not on TS then HaO might be a better emergency heal. I just really hate that long cast time on HaO, its absurd.
Thanks for the feedback!
Gear/Consumables breakdown:
This is pretty basic melee train, half knights/half soldiers. Runes focused on defense. I chose Dolyak runes because they are affordable and I like the passive HP regen.
As far as consumables go, it doesn’t really matter, but do have something! Even if it is cheap Mango Pies and Quality Maintenance Oil (again budget build).
When all is said and done, with Dolyak Runes/Mango Pie/Signet of Wild you should be passive ticking about 200 HP per second (330 with Regeneration boon).
Weapon/Sigil breakdown:
Greatsword: This is THE weapon as a Ranger in a melee train, you should have GS equipped literally the whole time you are in the fight. Ride kitten skill 1, the 3rd attack of skill 1 gives you about 1 second of evade (awesome). Which in a melee train can translate to evading anywhere from 1 to 10 hits about every 3 seconds. Spam skill 2 (Maul) every chance you get, it hits like a truck. Skill 3 is great for catching up to the commander, just be careful with what you target. Skill 4/5 are basically never used because they root you and are generally single target skills.
I chose Sigil of Fire for more AoE damage obviously, and the Celerity Sigil will be a confusion for some. However, in a melee train getting 5 kills will happen fast and getting a full 5 seconds of Quickness (with no negatives) not only pours on the damage, but also allows you to spam evades even faster negating even more damage. Sigils are really upto you though, I would suggest a balance between added damage and added survivability. Note: GS is getting a buff to every skill on Sept. 9th
xxxxxx/Warhorn: This is your, mobility outside of combat and buffs while preparing to enter battle. Skill 5 on Warhorn before entering the fray, or keeping up with commander outside of combat. You could easily replace 1h sword with the axe, the only thing you should be using main hand in this set is for charging your Sigil of Perception/BLust/Momentum (full 25 stack on 5 player kills), second sigil is 100% optional. Note Beware skill 1 on 1h sword, it will root you and prevent you from dodging, it has gotten me killed a number of times. Which is why I say never to use it in the melee train. (We all know how crazy 1h sword can be).
Pets:
Simple enough, your pet is going to die fast. I personally use the Fern Hound as a pre-fight regen buff and leave him on passive. And will switch to bear for condi removal if he is alive.
Quick note on melee train tactics:
The safest place you can be is on the commander, stick to him like glue and if you need to back out from taking serious damage give yourself some good distance so you don’t get picked off. Make sure to target the commander to give him the big red reticule, so you can spot him easily. When you see a water field remember you can blast with Warhorn 5.
I hope someone out there makes some use out of this build, I really enjoyed making and tuning it. Normally I wouldn’t post a build on the official forums, but I noticed a lot of Rangers looking for WvW builds.
As a preface to this build/guide, I want to make clear that the easiest (not necessarily most fun) solution to being a part of a melee train as to roll a meta guardian. They are pretty much made for the melee train, that being said I know a lot of you guys love to play your main in all areas of your game play. If your main happens to be a Ranger, and you happen to be one of those players that does like to play your main in all areas including WvW, I would encourage you to read on.
So first off, this build would be most popular on the higher tier servers where “blobbing or melee train” is the way you accomplish your goals. So if you are a roamer or solo player that doesn’t want to be involved in all that, this build probably wont do anything for you. I have play tested this build for some time now, and found that it had great results. With the upcoming changes to Ranger GS and signets in a few days, this build will become even more viable.
Here is a link I made to give the details of the build, the build is in the “budget” form assuming all gear is exotic and I chose the much cheaper Dolyak Rune over the obviously better Melandru Rune. Please take a look to get familiar with the build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNBhYDbkRlGWrYxfFuWDMIUrHg4NAa/CnQy66eP5VPaF-TVjDwAyvgAyUnonSlXqsM4IBAUZFgDCQAzfIeAAj0IASXRClgo2fgMAmTA-w
Trait Breakdown: 6/0/6/2/0
Marksmanship: IV, VII, XI… signet improvements and good team precision support, XI is getting turned into baseline for all Rangers on Sept. 9. So this will give a chance to slip in more damage post patch.
Wilderness Survival: IV, X, XII… General improved survival traits, and faster recharge on GS for Maul spam. Some might want to try XI in place of XII, but your pet is basically cannon fodder in large fights, so its better to not have any pet reliant traits. Minor traits on this line provide great synergy for this build.
Nature Magic: VI… These 2 trait points could really go anywhere, but it seemed like the smartest option to me. Some small survivability buffs.
Skills Breakdown:
Heal skill is up to you, but I recommend Heal as One due to its short recharge and respectable heal. If you want to be more supportive you could definitely go with Healing Spring, but generally the Eles have the water fields covered.
Full signets in utility slots… Stone will give you a good defense boost on passive and a great “oh crap” emergency invuln skill (don’t use it randomly).
Wild will give you a 3rd source of passive HP regen (+ Dolyak Rune and Mango Pie), but don’t be shy about using it for the Stability and extra damage. I usually use this just as i’m entering the fray.
Renewal should only be used if you really need to break a stun or you have a massive amount of condi on you. 10 seconds sounds like a long time to pulse remove a condition, but ive seen it remove 20stk of bleeds, 15s chills, etc.
Elite skill is RaO: Obvious choice is obvious, beautiful 22s of stability.

Ah well.. I needed one last ticket scrap to get a BL Chaos skin.. so I did the key farming yesterday for few hours and it’s actually not a bad way to pass time. I did get the last scrap and got the gs skin to put in the bank. It’s currently @ 100 g I think so I feel that it was worth while.
I sort of found it relaxing. Played some techno music while I was doing the runs. Wish I had known about this sooner since I am sure it will get nerfed in features patch.
Pretty much exactly what I do, sometimes I even listen to an audio-book. I find it relaxing honestly.
Yeah I can agree that the scrap rate is usually about 1/3 chests. So about 30 chests per skin on average. Yet as with RNG, there is huge variation.
Did anyone try map completion for getting keys? How bad is the rng? I’ve gotten keys in a row once and sometimes a long streak of trans charges.
I expect the odds over time are 50/50 since you get either a key or a Transmutation Charge. You realize RNG means you can do several in a row and get a T-charge each time though.

Explorable zones
Rewards for completion of explorable zones scale up to the top level of that zone. For example, the map completion of Fireheart Rise can give rewards up to level 70. In addition, the rarity of the items recieved scale with the level of that zone, from Masterwork to Rare to Exotic.Coins (amount scales with the level of the area)
Experience (10% of level at the time map was completed)
2 random pieces of equipment (approximate to level of the area)
1 Transmutation Charge or 1 Black Lion Chest Key
40 random crafting materials or 20 random ingredients available in the zoneThe Wiki is known to have false or incomplete information. In this case, I believe you can get both a Tcharge and a BLK. I was doing map completion last night and i’m pretty sure I remember getting one of each. I could be having a brain fart though.
I suppose it’s possible, but aren’t there 4 slots? 2 of them for gear, one for mats and one for key/T-charge. Getting both a key and a T-charge means one appeared in one of the slots for those other items. I would think the slots for gear and mats would be “hard coded” for that, not gem store items.
Yeah I think I just had a brain fart, I did a few more zones today and got either a Tcharge or a Key.
Yep, great update for the TP! I as a veteran player am pleased with this feature!
It takes roughly 250gold to craft to 500. Crafting the ascended item(s) themselves does not cost nearly as much. I have leveled Huntsman, Leatherworker, Artificer and Weaponsmithing all to 500 and it is very costly to do so even if you follow guides. Unfortunately I think your best bet is either to farm like crazy or to whip out the ’ol credit card and buy some gems to convert to gold. If you do the latter option however, I suggest buying your son a few nice items just for a treat, like a kite and some minis or something (:
Actually, we do have some gems left over from having to buy my son’s new character slot. I’ve never heard of being able to convert gems into gold. Where/how is this done? Thanks.
(BTW my son’s reward from his dad when he got his Charr Warrior to 80 recently was a full set of Exotic Armor, Sigil and Weapons. He was elated.)
Lol, you are an awesome Dad. You guys probably have rich future playing games together and hanging out, I only hope for the same when I have my own!
I am at a loss to see how anyone can be negative about this TP update. It is everything I have wanted to change since release, I despise the current one gahhh!
So to Anet: Looks awesome, took too long IMO, but better late than never!
To answer simply, you really don’t need Ascended armor unless you are a big fractal runner to counteract Agony (high tier difficulty). Others might argue that if you are a hardcore WvW player you should be competitive as possible, but again its not a necessity.
I have one character with full ascended gear, I pretty much use him for dungeons and all levels of fractals. The character I most often WvW with is running full exotics (except for rings/accessories are ascended), and I do just fine.

I have a number of Gemstore outfits/armors that I bought with gold conversion. I just hope they wont tie any achievements to the Gemstore items. That would be really low, IMO.
This thread is hilarious, definitely one of those “Can’t tell if trolling or…..” threads. It’s great how pretty much every point is incorrect or totally pointless.
Hey buddy, tell me how worthless it is after I sell my Perma Hair Kit?
I had to read this update a couple times to figure it out (i’m slow in the mornings). But ultimately it sounds like something to do in game, and I generally like collecting. I think it will gives me some new goals too, huzzah!
Now this is a feature update! The first good news yet imo, looking forward to the next couple days.
… it doesn’t have to make sense.
(five minutes after Super Adventure Box update goes live)
ANet, what were you thinking!! [Merged]
Haha, sad but true… Although you wouldn’t find me anywhere in that thread. I would be collecting baubles!! Woohoo!
I agree that it is a huge shame that these aren’t mix and matchable. That being said, you can remove the mask on the Assassin outfit. You just need to untick “show helmet box”, although you can only remove the mask (not shoulders or gloves).
Because it is technologically impossible to automate the update appearing online, there can be no preview today.
Lol, more likely that they want to be available to comment on posts and such that would spark from the update notes.
Yeah Labor Day today, look out for it tomorrow.
Short term goal for you Blix, see how many keys you can farm before the update! gogogo!
I’m afraid your response doesn’t convince me that ANet isn’t going to do this.
The answer to most of your objections is, it’s already set up in China for the personal story to start at level 10. If they can do it there, they can most certainly do it here.
As to immersion breaking, if ANet doesn’t consider it immersion breaking the way it’s set up in China then why would they consider it immersion breaking for the NA/EU Clint?
I totally agree with your prediction and your attitude about it. We are the open minded ones here, rogue is being incredibly closed minded saying there is no way he could be wrong. It could go either way, but judging by the sound of the update and how they have been using a lot of things from the China side. Again not 100% certain, but It is a pretty safe bet to say PS will start at level 10. I seriously hope Rogue is right, I just really don’t think he is.
Making a GW2 SDK or rather map creation kit would be wayyyyyyyy… WAY more work than creating a new world for SAB.
I don’t get it, most people have one already, it’s always been 100g. People are surprisingly actually pretty good about not randomly tagging up out in zones for no reason.
On topic: I don’t have any reason to believe that key farming is dead. It MAY change, but we don’t know. Even if chapters are segmented, and locked behind accessing the PS at level 10, Leveling tomes are not hard to come by, and you should still be able to do it quickly. I don’t see it as an issue. Nothing in the blog suggested anything about locking the PS until level 10. People are using “China does it that way” as an excuse. Please don’t try to be so negative all the time, and take every little thing way out of context.
It’s just the fact that all the stuff they have talked about adding thus far is an exact copy of what they did in China. So its a kind of “if the shoe fits” situation, but I agree we cant be 100% certain. I have to say I would be shocked if it was any different though.
We have a few people on this thread who feel this is a good thing, either because they don’t like key farming or they think the weapons skins are undervalued because of key farmers and that bringing the prices up is a positive thing,
But what happens to prices to weapon skins if there are no key farmers and the drop rates of the scraps is unchanged?
How much will new weapons cost in the future?
(This is a worse case scenario that assumes no key farmers. If the personal story starts at level 10 and if it can take ~ 5 hours to get to level 10 at ~2 levels per hour then key farming is going to drop down to essentially zero. It also assumes no changes in the drop rate of scraps)
Average drop rate % of scraps has been 20%. This means an average of 50 keys to get 10 scraps.
4200 gems are needed to get 50 keys at 2100 gems for 25. That’s $52.50€
At this moment
Buying gems with gold: 14.85gold/100 gems
Selling gems to buy gold: 9.92 gold/100 gemsIf someone buys 50 keys with $52.50€, then to break even if he wants to sell the skin he has to sell it for at least 416.64 gold (4200 gems/100 × 9.92gold) to make as much as he could have gotten by selling the 4200 gems directly to get gold.
If someone buys the gems with gold, he will need to spend 623.70 gold to get 4200 gems (14.85 gold x 4,200/100)
This means at the current gems to gold conversion, the lowest price for new weapon skins in the absence of key farmers is 416.64 gold.
Yep, and dare we even think about the permanent bank/merch/tp/hair kits?
Oh, the sound of kitten farmers. Your cheap kitten is ruining the game for new players and people who want to play the game (and since you don’t support the game with money or rising the gold to gems ratio, you’re also ruining the game). Deal with it.
And what I do care about killing mobs without drops or exp? BECAUSE I WANT TO PLAY THE GAME! No just rush, finish and get rewards.
And obviously, you can’t possibly comprehend how farmers ruin other players experience. After all, selfish players only care about themselves.
so what about the people that farm keys with sword warriors and no tweaks? you know, the “i don’t want to pay more just to farm more easily” crowd, like me? we kill mobs just as fast as you.
Did I said something about warriors? No. Still, you aren’t supporting the game but well, ArenaNet works for free I guess.
I supported the game when I paid 80$ for it on release, I supported the game by getting a friend or two to buy a copy. I will support the game by buying an expansion if that ever happens. I have never supported the game by paying real money for gems, and I never will. Don’t try to tell people that they don’t support the game if they dont buy gems, if they own the game they support it.
How dare those awful key farmers kill the earth elemental too fast, how dare they! FYI enemies in the Shaemoor instance don’t drop loot.
Heck I do buy gems when Anet does things I support. I have done this for a while- dump a small amount of cash to support actions by the dev’s that I think are worth paying for.
And yet, I also farm keys. I find it amusing that daimasei considers key runs “not playing the game” given how much I’ve evolved my optimized route. They’ve probably never felt the thrill that comes with doing speed running in games before.
Right? I love trying to beat my previous record, I think it’s fun! And yeah, the devs already chimed in multiple times that key farming was totally legit and not an exploit.

At this point people are getting entirely too worked up over this. I find some of the selfish reactions interesting. People are upset about farming keys, but overarching purpose of a new character for most people (especially new people) is to actually play the game and what they intend is to make this a better experience for the bulk of the people. Much like people complaining that champ trains were nerfed but in reality it was pretty much only the starter areas because of people being kittens when some new player killed one of the champs.
I doubt they’ll remove keys from the early game, otherwise how would new players be introduced to them?
I did the QD champ train before it was nerfed. And I have to say, it actually is a good thing they did nerf it. To be frank, it was boring. It shortened the life expectancy of the game. People were complaining that something should be done about the QD champ farm – to avoid it at all costs (especially to new players). And now people are complaining that it was nerfed. Why complain about an event that shortened the life expectancy of the game?.
Keys offer the chance at endgame skin rewards, its a fun farm you can do alone or with friends. It is also the least toxic farm in the game, in fact often times if you are near another key farmer they will toss a symbol of swiftness in front of you to help you out.
QD champ train was very toxic, and it was used as a means to level your character to 80 without ever leaving the starting zone. Yes those are issues, no it has nothing in common with key farming.
An optional tutorial zone is the simple and extremely obvious response to new players learning the game (not that it is remotely difficult to figure out to start).
Wondering if we can get official confirmation from someone at AN that the new story and lv 10 Key reward will start at level 10 now, or when it starts. Or that the level 10 Key is still the reward there.
Why would they change only that from the China server model? Besides, why do you think most other posts have a response and not this one.
I feel like this is moving backwards, like if Anet had level locked story from the start and then said “hey guys! No more level locked story!” we would all give a collective “sounds good!”.
I mean I agree it could have been developed specifically to counteract key farming, but i’m just not convinced. Seems like they could have gone through a LOT less work to do it, if that was there original plan.
I wouldn’t make the mistake to assume Anet is doing this specifically to nerf the key farm. They just likely don’t care that it is going to nerf key farming (or maybe a happy bonus).
I suspect them knowing exactly what they’re doing.
I mean, I don’t think they developed the “Fresh Start” feature specifically for nerfing the key farm. Could be wrong though.

A lot of us aren’t surprised by this announcement at all, this is after all the “Chinese Feature Pack”. Me and most of my guildies have been stocking up on keys since we saw “a fresh new start” on the list of feature changes. It makes me pretty sad, considering farming keys was actually a pretty fun activity for me and my friends to run together. Also, unless they do something about scraps drop rate, BL skins are going through the roof.
Nicholas’ descendant.
The ability to add to stacks in Guild bank.
The ability to see which character (without logging onto said character) has what level of Crafting from somewhere, I’m not sure where would be best.
I know, I’m odd.
Not at all, you just named features that should have been on release. Well besides Nicholas, which is a great idea.
With the inclusion of the Chinese crafting backpacks, I can only hope that tomorrow they do not announce the Chinese personal story changes.
Welp… Where there is smoke, there is also fire. Pretty much everything they have done is just move what they are doing in China to our servers now. So yeah, likely say goodbye to key farming and hello to higher gem prices.
So you are blaming the DDoS on a SAB fan based off of what? The person/people who have been DDoSing have also been doing it to other game servers this week as well. Even if it was a SAB fan, you cant really believe that it reflects on everyone?
sigh…
It seems kind of obvious that those posts were mistakenly merged into this thread by a moderator, or misposted by the authors. There were a lot of anti-DDOS threads that’re gone now.
Well he/she specifically talks about the SAB protest/rally in his post, so I don’t think so. Maybe though, I hope so actually lol.
I hate the fact that little turds have to affect other players by attacking the servers. Don’t be a spoiled brat just because you didn’t get what you wanted. Grow up. This only makes all the players and the staff look down on you, and even if you DO get what you want, these attacks will most likely be figured out, and you will get banned. You are ruining my personal experience because I cannot do what I had planned today on the game with a friend. This is the most selfish protest I have ever seen.
So you are blaming the DDoS on a SAB fan based off of what? The person/people who have been DDoSing have also been doing it to other game servers this week as well. Even if it was a SAB fan, you cant really believe that it reflects on everyone?
sigh…
And it turned out (most times, not every time) that the guys just didn’t know how the farm worked.
I’ll be glad to see it go personally.
Every run I’ve done has a few people giving direction, explaining how it works, and why it’s beneficial to let the event fail. It’s simple: 1. Stack on Blix, spawn champs through scaling. 2. Stay in tunnel, use reflects. 3. Keep elites alive, never let the circle go empty, focus champs. Kill mobs when they reach the group.
Pretty easy.
I’m sure you were also glad to see the other trains go, and every other means of earning gold aside from TP flipping, farming the same dungeons on repeat 2 years in, and the world boss circuit.
#BuyGems!
Tinfoil hat ftw, no I was sad to see the ember farm go (but I understood it needed to). It was way less toxic and about 5x more rewarding, it also changed the economy way more than blix farm. I was also bummed when they extended the timer for plinx/shelt/penit. Why don’t you start “TP flipping” since you seem to know much more about it than everyone else, haha.
(edited by Kysin.6349)
Anyone saying this event doesn’t make a toxic environment clearly has all forms of chat off. I’ve seen expletives, name calling, blocking, and reporting a number of times directed at people. And it turned out (most times, not every time) that the guys just didn’t know how the farm worked.
I’ll be glad to see it go personally.
Likely the single biggest reason for the low metrics, was because W2 was released at the same time as Ascended weapons and legendary weapon updates. So most people were focusing on those.
No trolling, just Anet listening to feedback. Give them some credit!
So if this is true then all of us that brought the adventure box coin have wasted our money…. perhaps we should all put tickets in for the refund of the cost (both myself and my daughter brought gems with money to purchase theses items)
I’m going for the more positive route myself, i’m hanging on to that coin for dear life with the blind faith that i’ll be able to use it again!
Ty so much Anet for showing up in great numbers at the NA rally today !
It was a pleasure to see that you shared our love of SAB may your soul ever be touched by Moto’s holy finger.
Yeah it was really encouraging seeing some Anet guys and gals there!
Lets keep stuff as civil as possible here, no need to give them a reason to lock this thread. This thread/movement is exploding in the community!
SAB riot/party/vigil in NA is in full swing!
I think the whole “SAB or Riot” thing is in very poor taste in light of current affairs.
I hope it doesn’t go viral because it will reflect poorly on the GW2 community, and gamers in general if a) we get this worked up over a GAME, and b) make light of real issues to express discontent.
Most people whine on the forums to express their feelings, we have a huge riot/party in Rata Sum to express ours. I would say it’s a step in the right direction… There are a couple annoying spammers, but no one is worked up. Think of it as a dynamic event in Rata Sum, see you there.
#OccupySAB 2014 is heating up on EU! The EU guild is open to all who wish to join.
