It all comes back to the same problem the Ele has always had.

It’s never been a question if you can pull it off and make it happen. It’s just a lot of extra work to pull off to get the same results another class can do with faceroll ease.

and I am perfectly OK with that. The problem is right now being prefect on ele is not enought against the obvious OP builds – it is not possible to win.
Also being perfect on ele means you have to be perfect on the class you face cuz as Gesamtkunstwerk wrote “you should be the one locking the enemy, not the other way around” and this requires you to know everything about your enemy and REACT to what he is doing. This is not the case for OP builds where you do your job almost complethly ignoring the enemy (you do the same no matter who you fight against) and still win or draw. Such OP builds are OK, especailly for begginers but experienced players should be abble to defet such builds with ease and on any class – right now it is not possible.
In other words right now we have Build Wars 2 and I would like this game to be Skills Wars 2

Armor of Earth and Earthattunement on CD. You most likely will pop AoE pretty early. Stuns and fears everywhere.

c’mon dude you spend 500h on ele and even dont know how many Protection AoE + earth swap give? No matter how you calculate it, it is not 30-40seconds

Man when I think my thief (new level 80 – not ascend) can Backstab for over 9k, can spam the second skill 3 times (4k each times) to bring down the poor guy, use shadow refuge as the rest of his team arrives and finish him as they are resuscitating him without them ever seeing me, and get away without any problem while they are hitting air… When I think that I realize that THE ELE AOE, HEALING AND MOBILITY SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN NERFED. (sorry for caps… artistically intended). The developers failed with this class to acheive game balance, they should undo all of the elementalist nerfs.

I leveled my thief mostly on wvw up to level 80. Starting from level ~30 (elite and important utils unlocked) it was easier to play than full ascended 80 (over 1k h gameplay) ele. Even until now I did not bother to full ascend my thief in all builds, on the right side are still some rares and greens and my death/score ratio on thief is close to 100%. Once I get 25 bloodlust on thief I loose them during logg off on ele I am forced to collect whole 25 stack 3-5 times in one hour

Guardians are better at aoe.

Why are you surprised? After all the repeated nerfs, we’re terrible right now. We never were the best class, people just thought we were OP because they were scrubs and we had unpredictability and we were pretty mobile. But now everyone is used to all eles tricks and learned how to counter us, like they should have done before screaming for us to be nerfed into the ground. But we still got nerfed anyway so we suck. I started out as an ele, but I’ve been spending more and more time on my guardian and warrior lately. They’re just so much better in every conceivable way. Anything an ele can do, they can do exponentially better. Seriously, just roll another class at this point. The difference is like night and day. After playing another class our weakness becomes even more apparent. The only problem is i’m quickly becoming bored with them. They’re nowhere near as fun as ele.

in this viedo a party of 3 ppl (me as dps ele and 2 dps thives) killed a guild/zerg of 11 ppl. We did this in less than 5s.

If you got 2 Ele’s in your group no boss that can be pulled into a corner or wall really stands a chance against 4X Fiery Frush and Fiery Whirl.

some of the wvw mobs (players) are easily killed by it too. This is my record (needed a help from 2 buddy thieves to acomplisch this)

3) People understand how elementalists work now.

and this is the biggest nerf to ele.

I can still kill someone who hits me when I have shocking aura on me, a stupid thief who HS spam me while I have arcane shield and he has < 2k hp or when someone dont poison me while I am about to heal etc. .. but slowly those kind of players become a minority.
When you know how to play ele you also know how to kill him becasue again ele hp and armour is lowest in the game, skills are medicore, have long CD and are easy to avoid.
For example against wvw tanky/stun warrior a dps oriented ele has zero chances to win because even if warrior face tank whole ele "burst" he lose 10k hp (which is 1/3 of his hp pool) and heal it back with one button press. As an ele you cannot even poison him unless you use sigil. You can still interrupt his heal but probably you dont have updraft/earthquake because you already used them to asure that your "burst" hits the warrior. Now ele "burst" is on comparable CD as his heal, meanwhile warrior used only heal and maybe 1 evade. Ele will die after all of his util stunbreaks will go on CD. The second and probably final blow will be eviscatare that will take 75% of ele hp :D The good thing is that ele will have painless death because he will be stunned in the moment he die.

LH should be nerfed cuz on a profession where brain should be required to play efficient you can auto spam skill 1.

@ winds – most of the pve enemies are not immune to blind, but yes dredges are pain for blind spam thieves and guardians, not only LH eles.

Design flop? I’d say that the elementalist is one of the most well designed classes in this game

agree 100%.

The problem is that v. simple to play 2-3 button classes/builds are so effective right now. On the OP builds you dont care agains who you play or what your enemy do - you just do your "ultimate strategy" and win or draw. Ofc your opponent knows your strategy, REACTS to it 100% correctly and still have 0 chances to win - THIS IS THE PROBLEM. Making ele another brain dead 2 button "I dont care agains who I play" profesion will ruin the game more.

Still the most fun thing to do in GW2 is to 1v1 eve vs ele. If the builds are similar (not staff glass vs dd tank) then this is the best skills test in the game, ofc unless it is 100% tank/heal vs other 100% tank/heal where both player will have their hp 75%+ all the time.

the trick here is probably to use “%of toughness converts to power” consumables/runes + earth scepter 2 on + earth trait 5 while screenshot taken in earth.
The gear would be a lot easier to guess without consumables and outside earth attunement.

lingering elements does’nt work on air +10% damage, that’s why I’m not using it.
Arcana 5 and 6 are too good to not have imo

are you sure about it? I did the test and it worked for me. There is a chance that additional vunrabilities (that i apply on crit) might somehow change the results but with this trait i hit ~10% harder in other attunement while the air icon was still on.
I will test is again to be sure.

ps. yes both arcana 5 and 6 are good, but for lover crit rate build air 2 acutally gives more endurance while using scepter.

Just cant get lured out of D/D in teamfights as it brings so much more to the table

in theam fights scepter is a lot better might stack giver, has 2x blind (10s cd single targed) and 15s pierce/aoe, dragon tooth which is great area denial skill (for example drop it downed alies to prevent stomp). In dagger the only team oriented skills are Ring of Earth and Frozen Burst (shocking aura when aura share build ofc). Also the heal from scepter is easier to use on themmates. Overall scepter is imho more theam oriented weapon than dagger and whats most important it is ranged.

but the traits are 15 watter 15 arcana 10 earth. Imho it gives more possibilities and i dont have to reset traits - I can addopt on the fly.
Compared to your build mine loose 2 master traits (watter/arcana) and gain only one adept (earth) but imho it is worth.
Dependend on the situation/team you can still use arcana 5 or 6. If you chose 5 and have no vigor on crit you can use air 2 - which in scepter/dagger is comparable to vigor on crit. As for earth you take either +10% damage or gain toughness (actually a lot of tou) while chanelled. For air +10% damage while in air + arcana 15 and fresh air gives perm +10% damage boost in all attunements.
Overall I offten use more offensive gear than you (left ber/right celestial or ber/ber), have less heal power, probably have more tou (+100 earth + a lot from earth trait 1) and have more damage because of perm air +10%, and <600 earth +10%.
Imho it is easier for me to be either more tanky or to have more dps and when i want have all at once I might be just a bit worse then you.

Short question: how do you kill fleeing targets? I run p/d sometimes myself
but if my opponent just decides to leg it, i have nearly no way of reliably illing them before they get away into a keep or a heavily guarded area.

and it should be like this. You play easy mode build. Its the build not your skill that guarantees you 1v1 win (or draw). If anet decide to make that build mobile/bursty and capable of catching opponents it will make automatically a build that any lame player can kill any other – potentialy skilled – player. Ofc anet balance team is not as that bad.

…and all other proffesions also can’t use full berserker – those 2 are not the only weaker profesions in spvp because of the fact thac they can’t go full ber
Generally currently pvp is a LOT more balanced than wvw where full tank guardian will just autoattack kill any low helath (thief, ele) glass.
There is no +200 power +-40% condi food, 12k backstab, over 3k power, 120% crit dmg, immortal 1v3 tanks, etc.
Imho wvw should use pvp combat standards instead of pve. Then it will be a lot more skill dependend where now it is proffession/build dependend.

Also the game goals in pvp are clear and you dont have to walk/search for 5-10 min to find someone who gonna 1v1 or 1v2 against you. Its constant battle so in 1h you will have as much duels as in wvw in one day – and in tournaments with good opponents – I still think that 95% wvw players have mob AI (same as 75% hotjons players).
Overal you will improove a lot faster in pvp.

this is the most boring ele build out there – you auto attack while staying in one atunement – this is the exact oposite of what ele is all about
Warr GS/AxeMace is more intresting to play (you use all skils, swap wapons), does more damage, has much more survability and does not require almost perfect support party that the hammer ele needs (fractals 40+)

If you preffer mele range and insane dps warrior is the way to go. If you want some more sophisticated play then try thief who is imho between primite warr and tricky ele.
I know what I am saying – I play hi level fractals (and general dung/pve) with all those three proffessions.

and also stick to the guide that neko wrote. It is by far the best pve ele guide published on this forum.

In every case where the invulnerable mechanic triggers, the only way to break it is getting hit by the invulnerable foe.

not the case for me. Snow fractal boss can hit me or even kill me while being inv the whole time.

Snowblind fractal, final boss is invulnerable for me for the first 10s of the figt (he can hit me I can not hit him). This happens on my ele, warr and thief on all fractal levels I have done so far (up to 4x). Its very often, like 9 times on 10 tries. The faster I get to the boss to init the fight (RTL, Steal, Rush) the longer the invulnerability last. Usually I am the first one in party who start attacking, if for some reason I am not the one who starts the fight (1 of 10 runs) there is no problem with inv.

Also this problem occurs on every mob/boss fom time to time. Usually when you hit the mob (again as the first player in party – yea I am quite a rusher ^^) and then for some reason you withdraw from the fight (for example to res slowbies) there is great chance that when you get back to the mob/boss he will be inv for some seconds.

As a general rule of thumb, even bunker ele can’t survive against two average skilled people. And that’s in pvp where burst is much less threatening (100%+ crit dmg lol).

This should be considered as undeniable fact – a starting point – the moment you get there you can start posting on forums about X being OP/UP but before pls just read/play/learn.
The moment you do not agree with that what haviz wrote you automatically declared yourself as a noob.

There is mayby only one deficiency in his statement namely “two average skilled people” – current average skill level is so low that I would rather say you need two normal people.

because you played ele a lot, understand ele, know its weakness and use it to your advantage. Now you can kill ele on any proffesion (but probably not on any build).

A bunker ele is unkillable only for low skilled players, at top tier , a bunker ele will go down easily against 2 average players, being a bunker you can outlat at least one opponent not two opponent of equal or superior skill, all other ele specs( semin bunker- glass cannon) require way more skill than: thief-warrior-ranger combined

If any of you still claim that bunker ele are unkillable..pls let me know, I’m ready to show you why you’re not unkillable

the problem is that you play pvp and you understand the combat on total different
level while all who QQ have basic or no undestanding of the game at all. Sad but true.
I just hope the aNet balance team can also see the diference betwen you and for example him:

Pro eles kill other pro players that plays other classes not only newbs. All the ele have to do is faceroll the keyboard.

Second problem is that Mackapacka-nups-like are the vast majority of the players. Out of milions players who bought this game there are like max 1000 (probably even less) who are on your level. So aNet has a choice to either balnace this game for 0.01% of the players (true balnace) or make it balanced for 99.99 Mackapackas-nups-like (no balance). Saddly for aNet there is no win-win solution :/

is pvp this game is still quite strong build-counterbuild oriented. If you know what your opponent plays you can counter it. Ofc avoiding you opponent best attack while assuring that your best attack/strategy "hits" is also essential.

properly build GC thief executioner is ideal for finishing the fight. DA5,15,25, mug,panic strike, CS5,15,25, Furious Retaliation, Executioner makes that even at range 450+900 you just press HS and steal and target is in downstate - ofc only when the target was already fighting someone and his hp was ~50%. This is the best (quickest) finisher in the game and its obious that your tank friend died to this.

yep currently many of them are area denial skills (indirect CC/damge) , but because there is really no staregy other than zerg in wvw they are weak compared to direct damage aoe limit baypass necro/mess skills… but its not that ele is broken, those two classes are broken and need a fix.

Staff gives an incredible edge on indirect damage. Perma Fire Field is crazy on +condition necros and rangers. Even if it doesnt mean you HAVE to stack +heal, you have to understand staff Elems are support characters. You wont shine or do crazy damage, you are not the wizard or mage you can see in other games but you are far from useless.

the effectivnes of staff ele comes not (only) from the damage. Still I think ele on this movie played an essenital role and it would be not possible if he was a messmer.
Ofc I do relize that for ranged DPS or collecting wvw badges (and many other tginhs) mesmer is better.

I also find the fire axe /condi /tank build to be very effective in 1v1 pvp. I can not beat counter necro with it but everything else is win or draw.
The thing is that pve, wvw, pvp are three totaly diferent playgrounds. For trolling wvw zergs containing mostly mob class players newest daphoenix build is perfect while in tpvp or pve there are better options.

its not penalized, as I said its best for begginers, good at any dungs/champions and almost must in hard content – which unfortunately for now is only fractals 30+

as I said, you can play with staff only. I played mostly with stff for first 2 months. Made 80, all the dungs (grinding full exotic sets from tokens)and it was NO PROBLEM.
Got bored, tried close and faound this way way more challenging than ranged, especialy when spec into damage not pvt.

yep, at pve any kind of ele is rather weak…. but that is why I like to play it.
Imho all the OP pve prefessions deserves a nerf (gardian especially), buffing ele will make him as boring as they are.

again, it is, ofc not as good as gc dps ranged mesmer but you can use staff almost everywhere in pve.

2 questions:
do you ever played hi level fractals or at elast Arrah? Did you only used dd there?
do you ever played wvw?

staff indeed is bad for pvp but it has its uses in all other acpects of the game.

I played almost only ranged until I learned to play close.
Even now, in harder content (frac 30+) I offten must switch to ranged cuz dd is either unplayable or not as effective as staff, scepter or focus.

ps.
This game is not wow frost mage and never will be – accept this or go back to wow.

yeah, especially ranged attacks and autos …

if ele is to hard for you try guard, warr, mess or even some thief builds – they as facerol as I asumme you want to play the game.

Btw. after you level and gear to 80 (cuz I think you play the game for max a week) try to do some hard content with close range DD and later switch to ranged scepter or staff then come back to this topic and laugh at yourself.
Still any pve content up to fractals 30+ can be done with any ele weapon, many dungs will be a lot easier for begginers with staff. Most of the standard dungs with dd are not so easy as with ranged setup.

basically such bindings coresponds to the game ui skill placement. Its easy to play/switch to oher proffesions and allow to press any skill/attunement while constantly walking (little finger is for skills and attunement change and thumb for utils)

edit:
before I used naga but found out that this binding is better.

edit2:
disable in game options autotargetting (advanced dd play is not possible with this ON). Also many ele skills aims better or even works different when used without a target.

I doubt that. I haven’t tried that build yet but from watching the video I don’t really feel inclined to. But I’m not the only ele out there maybe someone else will find that interesting.

The best ele tank I made (with nice killing abilities via condi damage) was 30 earth, 30 watter, 10 arcana. Depending with whom and VS whom I played with weapon set was S/F, S/D or D/D + summoned axe whre skill 5 hits for 10k+ dot damage. Because of low heath pool, v. high armour, and good healing you could easily maitain 50%+ hp which is quite important vs “less than 50% hp” traits/buffs some OP proffesions ^^ have. The only weaknes this build have is counter necro build (and to some degree all heavy condi damage builds). The strategy is to perm burn(easy) and perm bleed (a bit harder) your enemy while outhealing/avoiding the damage. Ofc this is spvp build where the amount of condis you can get is usually limited to max 2-3 players that can put them on you. For 1vZ, like daphoenix plays you will need better cond removal, and “tank” more via movement/running, los loss, being smart etc – but this is not a tank its more run/heal build – rather useless in spvp where if you run off the node you just lose the node.

I still play 0/10/0/30/30 for d/d and staff just because it’s so tanky. I don’t really care what daphoenix thinks.

I think he thinks that there are more tanky options for an ele than 0/10/0/30/30. I also think that there are better ways to tank than going 0 in earth. Actually anyone who is capable of thinking should think same way as we do.

As I said in 2-3 months ppl will QQ how OP earth elems are Ofc there will be like 5-10 ppl who actutaly can play this spec to its fullest potential – same as with current watter/arcana dd – but still there will be no end for QQ and 20 earth will become new THE ONE AND ONLY ele option

you just played two natural enemies of typical dd ele – properly build necro and engi. With those you will quickly own most wanabe d/d eles (90% players) and force experienced dd ele to flee or offer them long battle where in the best scenatio they can only draw. To kill more expierienced dd’es wait until they get mist form and armour of earth on 75s and 90s cooldown, then immobilize before or during rtl and/or interrupt their Ether Renewal – done.

nice video/build and play. We really need more of such videos on forum. The current problem with ele is that one of the most skilled players out there – daphoenix – posted his d/d movie and zerg followed him creating many 0/10/0/30/30 d/d who are nowhere close to the orginal – yet they are assuming that this is THE ONLY option ele has ;D
Now daphenix changed his build, and went 20 in earth but zerg still says that earth is useless traitline. It will take a month or two for the zerg to realize that maybe earth is not that bad as they think… I hope someday zerg realize that ele has also other options.
We need more such movies. If my core i3 could handle recording I would record some nice GC or condi builds movies myself.
