right ok so i dont need to set them up. im trying my first game and im just getting constantly trashed over and over and over. not fun at all. resorted to just using a bow and standing way back as i just get smashed in melee : /

haha, sounds like the first couple weeks or so for me too. It took some getting used to for me. I personally prefer to play with a good set of defensive abilities to stay alive longer (sacrificing dmg). Dodging is important as well which took me some time to get used to. The burst builds require you to get in pop burst cooldowns and then get out and play defense as best u can.

also guys with the pvp reword chests i can buy, whats the point when i buy one open it and get a load of stuff that looks the same as i could have got off the vendors for free? is it best to just stack the points until i can get higher level stuff? I know its all cosmetic but is it really a random chance of getting something usable on ure class that looks good?

At every level (rabbit/deer/etc) you get like 3 or 4 different types of stuff – see this link:

http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/56825-a-general-how-to-on-crafting-pvp-gear/

So basically, I get some pvp salvage kits and a bunch of chests and salvage the stuff that comes out that I already have.

You can do a preview on each gear using the pvp locker – that way I will go look for something that looks sorta cool and then just craft it if it isn’t showing up in the chests.

almost all thieves are noobs who wanted to play the “current OP class”

Generalize much? Don’t kitten on all people who play thieves because there happens to be a faceroll/bursty way to play them that often attracts less-skilled players. There are plenty of skilled players playing thieves including pistol and other types of condition builds.

I did a few hot-joins/free’s yesterday and although thief is a very popular profession I saw at least as many rangers in there. And warriors are not far behind. Then comes the rest rather evenly spread.

I see a lot of mesmers as well. Thieves>=Mesmers>Guardians=Warriors>the rest seems to be what I see.

mesmer clones are OP

in PvP

Leadfoot.9071

I think they are one of the toughest classes to beat in spvp 1v1 and they can be very troublesome in big fights. I don’t know if I can say that they are OP (although their downed state is pretty ridiculous – they can kitten near kill me from 50% health before i finally get the stomp off) but I can say that in the hands of a good player they are VERY tough and annoying.

I’m not that great of a pvp player and I know that I have to restrain myself from jumping to “oh thats bullkitten he’s OP” type of reactions when I get thoroughly thumped by a mesmer (or a backstab thief) and ground myself and say “I just don’t have the knowledge/experience, the skill, or the appropriate build to counter this particular class at this moment – yes they may have some really strong advantages but that doesn’t necessarily mena they are OP – adapt and hopefully overcome otherwise accept the weakness – i’m no pro.”

Spotting the real mesmer among the clones is pretty easy once you get used to it – as already mentioned there are some easy things to look for. Their phantasms do pump out quite a load of dmg at times so it is important to kill them or avoid them somehow.

I don’t have a hard time spotting the real mesmer, but I DO have a hard time targeting them… tab targeting is obviously pointless with all the clones around (am much more impressed with WoW’s tab targeting system after playing this game) and I suck at mouse targeting. So question for all you guys who are at ease with fighting mesmers, how do you prefer to target them among the clones? Tab target? Mouse target? Auto-target (something which I’m wondering if I have disabled) – How does the auto targeting work exactly? Every time you attack it attempts to target nearest enemy?

Leadfoot.9071

Huh? What, are people already crying about it? What happened to all the bragging “if you don’t spot the real mesmer in 0,5s from a fake then you are bad” ????

Yes, it is annoying, yes it is intended, yes it is the only defense mesmers really have. Is it OP ? No it’s not. Can i tell them apart? Yes, almost always but not always instantly.

Clones aren’t half bad. Phantasm dmg and shatters are worse;p

I’d love that to be true, but mesmers have loads upon loads of defense apart from the clones. They have some of the best defensive weapons, traits and utilities in the game on top of their class mechanic. The greatsword/sword mesmers who are honest glass cannons that deceive using their clones, those feel balanced. Staff/sword mesmers that are statbuilt like a three-hit-kill thieves but play like Guardians, those do not.

I have noticed this quite a bit. I only play hot join and am not that good – but I constantly see fairly skilled mesmers basically trolling 2-3 other players at points – just sitting there harrassing and never dieing. They can be extremely effective with clone spam and seem to have lots of tricks to get out of trouble.

So really how is the Necro?

Leadfoot.9071

I pretty much do hot join pvp only – I had played thief pretty much exclusively but just recently started messing around with conditionmancer. I think it’s very fun but as noted in a previous post they lack mobility and survivability compared at least to thief. However, I feel like you can put out a decent amount of bleed damage fairly quickly but it’s a bit tricky to manage. Overall, I enjoy the class so far!! That’s my noob 2 cents

Leadfoot.9071

I’m a new conditionmancer and also have some trouble with the ground targeting spells… I have not tried the smartcasting or the trait but defaulting at the targets position is NOT useful in my opinion… one thing I Have quickly learned is that putting those ground targets on the target is usually a bad idea because by the time the mark goes down they will have moved out – you want to anticipate where they are going usually – I don’t know maybe it’s a lag issue.

How to stay alive in SPVP?

in Necromancer

Posted by: Leadfoot.9071

Leadfoot.9071

I just started playing around with a necromancer in spvp – I’m playing a condition build with 0/30/20/20/0 and consume conditions, epidemic, plague signet, blood is power and plague elite. If nobody pays attention I can do reasonable well at stacking bleeds but as soon as anybody focuses me I die… I hardly ever have enouhg life force to stay in death shroud for any significant amount of time and I’m not sure if plague is bugged or what but I had it not work yet consume the cooldown on me twice just now. Any suggestions? I don’t want to hear aobut how the class sucks or whatever other kittening goes on in here – just looking for some pointers kthx Wondering if there are any suggestions for traits or maybe other utility skills or strategy or something. I am pretty new at this and haven’t been very good about switching to staff and droppiing reapers mark.

condition dmg in spvp

in PvP

Posted by: Leadfoot.9071

Leadfoot.9071

I was just playing again and was fighting three guys along with a teammate at waterfall node – we killed all three and I KNOW I had put out a ton of damage on all three with my bleeds but I only got credit for one – the one I stomped.

That is really crap in my opinion. I mean, is ANet trying to force thieves into backstab (burst) builds and discouraging condition builds for casual hot join? Or is this just a bug? Either way it sucks because the condition build is the one I enjoy most but I’m punished for it glory wise… not cool.

condition dmg in spvp

Leadfoot.9071

I feel like this was happening to me a LOT last night. I would go into a big skirmish and spread around a ton of bleeds and watch the damage roll and I know several of those guys would get stmped but not by me and I would get credit only for maybe one. Quite frustrating for a casual pvper just looking to get some glory for my efforts…

If you lose credit by them removing conditions but then dying right after anyways because they were so low from said conditions, I would call that a BUG! I’m sure this type of thing happens rather often since so many builds have condition removal. If i whittle away 75% of their health and they end up dying in the skirmish regardless of whether I execute the stomp I should get some credit.

Disclaimer: I realize spvp is not about kills but for the sake of gaining glory it IS important.

Leadfoot.9071

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I was wondering about condition dmg in spvp and earning glory. It seems to me that often I will deal a pretty good chunk of condition dmg to a bad guy but not get any credit for the kill. What are the rules here? Do direct damage dealers have an advantage in accumulating glory via kills in spvp?

Thanks!

Weapon preview not useful!!!

Leadfoot.9071

I spvp quite a bit and wanted to preview some of the weapons available to me through crafting or reward chest farming. The problem is that when you right-click/preview it – the weapon is often obscured by armor. I play a thief and most chest armor bulges out and the dagger actually goes under it so you cannot see it.

Can we get an option to go into like a combat stance or unholster the weapon in preview mode so we can really see it?

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fYAQNAoYVlUmKPHdy9E95EB3Dna0m6p4rjtTBX1KA;TwAgyCuoay0koJbTumkNt+Y4xOg5HA
It’s got great survivability – stack up the bleeds with caltrops d/d then go stealth and regenerate health and initiative. I have tried with a p/d second set instead of SB but I like SB better.

Wondering if maybe switching traits assassins reward for quick recovery and maybe infusion of shadows for hidden thief would be a good idea. Also thinking about swapping shadowstep for blinding powder for another stealth/blind.

I had some really good success with this build tonight (over 300 point matches in spvp which is really good for me – i’m no pro). Caltops/steal combo and then 3 d/d and then either switch to SB or stealth. I was annoying the hell out of people being so hard to kill.

I’ve been going between p/d and d/d in sPVP and think I want to try a S/D build next. One question I Have is Steal vs. Infiltrators strike. It seems to me you want to infiltrators strike into a fight quite often so that you have the escape route and the condition removal… however, steal is pretty awesome especially with mug. I suppose there’s no reason not to IS then steal but it seems like a waste of two gap closers and closing gaps with S/D seems pretty important because you need a lot of up time? Probably a noob question but figured I’d ask :P

Backstab, time to nerf.

in Thief

Leadfoot.9071

I’m a bit amazed they’re actually going to nerf Backstab. Thankfully he claimed they’ll be buffing other stuff in return, but still.
Backstab is so freaking easy to counter; way easier than Hundred Blades. You don’t even need to see the Thief coming. Just dodge AFTER you get hit by CnD and they’re still not gonna get the Backstab itself in. Worst case scenario they used a poison to hold you, and you’ll have to pop a skill to break it first, which is no worse than having to break out of the Stun used by a Warrior for Hundred Blades. The damage itself sure as hell is not greater, and requires specific traits as well as at least two utilities dedicated to it.

Typically, the CnD/steal combo is paired up with an immobilize like devourer venom or basilisk. Therefore, you’d have to anticipate the cnd/steal, pop a stun breaker and then dodge, all before he positions (which is trivial, being in front of a character is actually just a small cone) and then backstabs. Your argument works if they are not immobilizing but imo that’s a big part of the backstab combo.

Backstab, time to nerf.

in Thief

Posted by: Leadfoot.9071

Leadfoot.9071

I won’t disagree that from a purely killing standpoint the backstab thief has some OP/hard to avoid burst. However, one way to look at it is that this is a much more team-oriented game. Killing other players is something that stands on more equal footing with other things like reviving teammates and holding points than with other mmo’s like wow.

When you look at it like that, you may find that each class brings something completely different to the table and it may balance out that way. Thieves happen to bring incredible burst and killing power once every 30 seconds or so. But I think if you look at this from the perspective of GW2 being quite a different animal from other mmo’s pvp-wise you might see that the fact that thieves bring this to the table doesn’t necessarily make them out of balance, they just happen to specialize in downing people while other classes have strengths in other areas.

These forums, by modern standards, are not very good. It would be nice to have some more modern features like:

  • advanced search
  • “search in this thread”
  • new posts option for us people at work who like to slack and just troll the forums

In other words, why not just use one of the prepackaged solutions out there like vBulletin or whatever it is – you get all that stuff for free and the forums become much, much better.

Minor suggestion but I would assume an easy win/low-hanging fruit?

Bug - Getting stuck "in combat" for extended periods of time for no reason

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Leadfoot.9071

Definitely a problem since the last patch. Game seems to be accruing bugs instead of shedding them since launch. This one is particularly annoying if you’ve run past a mob on your way to a vista. You cannot get the vista unless you log out and back in. Even if your weopons time out and get put away, you’re still labelled as “in combat” and cannot view the vista or switch out weapons. I’ve had this happen in some really odd places as well.

So a bug that has been there since the beginning not being fixed yet = accruing bugs?? Ok…

I just came here to post that I was having this problem last night as well – it can be very frustrating. Bumping in hopes of a bump in priority – I’m sure Anet has their hands full.

Disallow respawning within immediate player perimeter

Posted by: Leadfoot.9071

Leadfoot.9071

There are some problems with the respawning I think. Last night I was tryign to get to this vista that required a very tricky jump that had to be timed perfectly. Due to the rampant respawning of monsters in teh area, I was constantly slowed due to being in combat (getting stuck in a combat is another separate issue) and could not make the jump. Finally, I got myself right to the edge, logged out and back in and was able to get across before I got put back into combat. I’m not sure how they shoudl fix it, but i t does seem like it’s in need of a tweak of some sort.

When I mentioned the “auto-reject” option, what I was thinking of was literally an option – like in the options menu – where you just check a box and it says “NO DUELING FOR ME” or wahtever… then, whenever someone tries to duel you, the option is simply greyed out/disabled or it just gives them a message saying this person doesn’t duel. I think its probably a very rare occurrence that someone would try to duel you, see that you have it disabled, and then proceed to harrass you in chat to try to get a duel going – and in those rare cases, you can always ignore them. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

I like the ability to duel anywhere because sometimes running around questing can get boring and it would be nice to notice someone nearby and challenge them to a duel for something different to do – a break from the norm.

Compared to a more “realistic” death. The current, you have limited vision, impaired hearing thing is pretty generous…

The only problem with this point is that in GW2 you get a set of skills to use in the downed state – they would be pretty useless if it worked the way you described. Yes it may be “generous” in comparison but it is a gameplay design. The gameplay design is significantly impeded by the camera issues in my (and apparently plenty of others) opinion.

Couple noob questions

in Players Helping Players

Leadfoot.9071

Hi,

1) I was wondering if there is a way to see what profession an enemy player is without clicking on them to look at the symbol above their health bar at the top of the screen? Ideally, the icon would be available for display near the nameplate above their head – is there anything like this that I just don’t know about?

2) When fighting stuff, sometimes these greenish (I’m a bit colorblind) hearts appear in the vicinity of the enemies reading things like “Poison” or “Remove Condition”. Are these just showing conditions that have been applied to the enemies? Are they conditions from all players or just me? Do they have any combo field information?

Thanks!
