the biggest problem that has created the most misconceptions and rage about the thief class. fix this, and a large portion of the thief hate disappears immediately.
Culling is by far one of the biggest issues, people in general will always react badly to stealth classes, it’s the surprise element that people don’t like. When something appears suddenly and you lose a large portion of your health. So when you see your health going down and you don’t see where that damage is coming from and therefore you cannot fight back reliably, that leads to massive frustrations and justifiably so.
Honestly I can’t see aNet fixing this problem.
I use all weapon types(albeit I’m known for using d/d most of the time).
Generally speaking, I destroy all my fellow d/d elementalists with staff =P. I lure them to a high rise cliff, and shove them off the edge using staff air3. Its usually an instant kill xD. Its pretty fun to do too :]

I know there is 1001 posts about this and I don’t honestly care. Fix rendering issues, like yesterday. It’s now no longer funny. Fix this. somehow, make it your number one priority.
I don’t want anymore horrible laggy “special” events, I’d like you to dedicate some real time and resource to something that is breaking WvW and sPvP with thieves/mesmers benefiting from the delay before you can see them.

I don’t know what you guys are doing or how you are playing but…wait…for…it… Elementalists are NOT underpowered. Yes you have to put more effort in to beat people but that is what makes the class more interesting.
If planning rotations, timing and using your attunement correctly is too much and this is not a direct flame…PLAY AN EASIER PROFESSION. Stop trying to pressure aNet into chaning Ele’s because you just want to press 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,2,1,1,1,1, lIke some other professions.
With increased effort and understanding comes rewards. I cannot play another profession after playing my Ele. And yes I wreck people, 1v1, 2v1, 3v1, 4v1 you name it. I’m tough to kill and can kill, I know my profession inside and out. I know how to counter other professions, other builds and I wreck people. Yeah of course I sometimes die, it comes with the territory. Do I expect to beat everyone I come across, of course not some people are just better at their class than I am. However Ele’s are NO way as kittenome people make them out to be.
Roll warrior and do bull-rush + Hundred blades if that’s what tickles your fancy. I’ll stick to playing something that takes time and effort to work out.
Glass Cannon Ele = Free and easy kill. Please continue speccing this way :P
I don’t understand why everyone says staff is bad at solo fights. I PVP a lot and I’m a staff ele and I do quite well. I don’t even use a bunker build. My staff ele uses a toughness/condition build.
It may be hard to land our high damage spells like eruption and lava font but they can be landed with proper aim and proper use of chill/stun/immobilize (we have tons of CC as a Staff ele). Now, this was easier before EA nerf. You could roll into frozen ground and stack like 8 seconds of frozen armor and it was much easier to land AoEs after it. The key is simply knowing when to use the right spell and at what time.
Mind you, I havent played Staff Ele since the nerf and I’ve been experimenting with SD…
I have never, ever been troubled by a Staff Ele. Most of the time I ignore them and kill the more dangerous targets. Maybe it’s a case of most of these players don’t know how to effectively use CC/Immobilise, I can tell you that 90% of them don’t even understand basic kiting. With the amount of mobility you can get with D/D (if you use the right cantrips), your not going to be able to kite me anyway.
And the match up is Staff Ele vs. DD Ele. Staff Ele will lose, everytime.
this is why i am all for eles having weapon switching honestly like i cant STAND when that happens and im stuck with that weapon set and u may or may not win with it aswell most players say OH ELE WILL BE OP more OP than any other class yea.. noo i really dont think we will at all tbh. still the same skills just switching out the only thing i could think of that would be OP is the staff water healing aswell as the D/D heals then yea. ull pretty much stay full health for a while.
Completely disagree. I play D/D, I know that I have no ranged abilities and therefore will not be very useful in keep offence/defence. That’s the price I pay for being mobile and semi-melee. In the same token, if I use a staff I should know that I won’t be much use solo/small group however, I will shine in keep offence/defence.
That’s how the class is designed. If aNet gave ele’s in combat weapon swapping, then YES they would be OP. If they gave them out of combat weapon swapping then no, they wouldn’t be OP, but it’s the same as reaching in your bags and equipping a staff…i.e. it’s not needed.
If your going to post videos, don’t include ANY fights against low level players, just level 80’s unless there is a large group your taking out. Otherwise your going to get flamed, fighting undergeared people is not an example of skill with a profession.
On a slightly different note, Rangers to me are free kills (I’m an Ele), I don’t know if it’s the profession being terrible or the ranger player base. Literally 95% of rangers I fight, backpeddle spamming 1 or just stand in the same spot trying to DPS me down, it’s honestly embarrassing.
I can honestly say that I have never, never been worried about a ranger I’m fighting, not once has a ranger troubled me or killed me in a 1v1,2v1,3v1. Their pets are an annoyance, that’s about it, it’s intriguing me that much, that I’m thinking about rolling one just to see if they are as bad as they seem, or it is indeed the players.
None. I was actually going to write a post about Staff Elementalists, I seem to be finding more and more of them away from their group or trying to solo with a staff, they are basically a free kill. There is nothing a Staff Ele can to against a D/D Ele apart from try and run. And to those who are trying to solo as a staff Ele, don’t do it.
I just think killing a commander should offer WAY better loot… like at least a rare even an exotic.
Commander limit per map should not apply as it is their choice to spend 100G on it. just make them drop better loot when killed.
When I get bored, me and a buddy do just this. Basically ninja gank commanders from inside their zerg ball, lot’s of fun!!!
Look, if someone want’s to spend 100g on a commander icon, that is entirely up to them. It does not mean that people should listen to that person and obey their every word. Some commanders choose to bark instructions at people and throw hissy fits if people don’t immediately jump to what they want, those are the commanders that you should not follow.
Leading anybody is something that is earned, you earn the respect of other players over time. By making good decisions, being civil in chat, being organised, organising others and this happens over time. If you spend a lot of time in WvW you will know who these players are already and most of them don’t have commander tags. I follow certain guilds (and players) in WvW that don’t have commander tags, purely because I’ve seen them around, seen what they can do, they are organised, use siege correctly, use tactics etc… So if they ask for help, people go and support them.
Just because someone has the little blue icon, does not mean that you immediately should blindly follow that person.
Well this was SUPPOSED to have been fixed with the last patch for the event, but it still bugs out. Magnetic Grasp is now WORSE than it was before the patch and I find myself stuck in the air/rooted every other time I try and use the ability.
I’m calling rubbish on this whole post, looks like made up numbers and an attempt at trolling to me. Screenshots of your damage (in a PvP match, not against dummies) or a vid would be better. Basically I think your lying. Especially when you claim this damage is done “within a second”, remember it takes just over 3 seconds to cast churning earth….I think your just pulling numbers out of the air.
And btw, your calling for a nerf on an ability that takes just 3 seconds to cast, can be interrupted and that any semi-competent player can avoid with something as simple as a well timed dodge roll or walking out of the are of effect (yes even if they use lightning flash whilst channelling)

My perspective is that structure PvP is a perpetual clusterkitten of leavers and 2v6 games that are not fun for any players. Anything you do to structure PvP that doesn’t address these issues is completely useless.

That’s my perspective at the moment, I’ve done about 10 sPvP matches today and every single one was full of unbalanced teams and leavers. This is not enjoyable for either side and does nothing to promote fun games.
Not to mention the abundance of certain professions over others, especially thieves. It’s just not enjoyable.
And the team balancing thing is honestly ridiculous. I’ve been balanced from the winning team onto the losing side so many times I’ve lost count.
But overall I think the Ele is in the same place as it was pre-patch.
Ele isn’t in the same place because now MG very rarely triggers fire aura (you get a confirmation of combo done but no icon, no burning to nearby enemy and no buffs if traited). Plus, dragon’s tooth doesn’t trigger blast finishers at all. And frankly, judging by recent anets reaction, we gonna get tooltip change instead of bugfix or even if they would fix it, it will take about a month and it might be glitched even more.
And? It’s hardly broke the profession has it? I don’t get why so many are focussed on this one aspect.
I haven’t changed a single thing with my build, I’m still 10 Air, 30 Water, 30 Arcana and still using EA. Honestly I’m shocked by the amount of people complaining about an unintended blast finisher bug being removed. It hasn’t broken the profession, I still kill people and rarely die, just last night won 2 × 2v1’s against a D/D Ele and a Thief, yes both were level 80’s, I wish I’d frapsed the fights.
If anything, they STILL need to fix Ride The Lightning, Magnetic Grasp. Both still bug out and both are still broken. But overall I think the Ele is in the same place as it was pre-patch. The buffed conjures don’t make a difference, people still will not use them, multiple cantrips are mandatory in PvP as is 30 Arcana / 30 Water. Tornado is now completely useless, but I still do well enough not to complain.
Sure I know that I’m working 3 x as hard as other professions, Thieves still do way to much DPS, but I’m having fun and that’s the main thing!!

And now I can’t log into the game before it crashes. Seems I’m getting spammed by the same Email (in game) to do with the quest line, each time I receive one, the game locks up.
Honestly, I don’t know what to say. After a pretty rubbish balance pass, where a lot of people were left scratching their heads over the changes, you follow it up with one of the worst events that I’ve ever partaken in, in any MMO. On top of that the chain quest is bugged, so even if you did want to follow this questline you get gazumped by bugs.
All of this, during a trial weekend. Honestly, I was playing this for a trial, after seeing that horrendous confusing lagfest in Lions Arch, the last thing I would be doing is buying this game…
Well the lag is SO bad that the event is completely unplayable for loads of people, you can’t even auto-attack it’s that bad.

In my opinion they need to look at stat stacking and how it is impacting damage, rather then constantly nerfing ability damage that effects various builds that may not be doing much damage to start with, let alone after being nerfed by 50%.
This is exactly what I have been thinking also, I am not sure why aNet are focussing on the ability itself and not look at the stat bonuses being stacked on gear and by using food/maintenance oils etc…
While I do not play thief myself, I duo in WvW with what I consider to be a very good thief player. He still kills people in 2-3 seconds, he still thinks thieves are OP but that is just his opinion. He actually down’s people before I am even in range on my D/D Ele.
It is the same in every other MMO. Good players will STILL be good players, bad players will head to the forum and complain. All the QQ is not needed, thieves are still very, very powerful professions.
Testing Ride The Lightning tonight and it’s still buggy. It rooted me to the spot in front of a tower and it still turns me into a static ball about 1 foot away from my target :P
Magnetic Grasp does seem to be more accurate, but would need to test further with it. I can live with the Evasive Arcana changes, just won’t be able to stack additional might like I used too
I messed around with the conjures and they still feel lacklustre, plus as others have stated, your kind of nerfing yourself by using a conjure anyway. The only use I’ve found for conjures is giving lighting hammer or greatsword to classes that can actually deal damage, like thieves or wars. Maybe that was the intention with conjures from the start?
And as for Tornado…well god knows what they were thinking with that one :P
On the flip side, thieves (supposedly nerfed) are still uber powerful. I duo WvW with a thief friend, he STILL kills people before I’m even in range, and no I’m not exaggerating :P He just had to adapt his build slightly. So that’s good.
I have a level 80 Mesmer and I endorse this change, I doubt the intention for iBeserkers / iWardens was ever for them to be used to take people out without LOS, it was…broken. However they need to fix the ability miss-firing now if there is so much as a blade of glass between you and your target.
It was a bug change and is now working as intended(ish).
Seriously, what will you carebears cry about next??? Why is everything an exploit, these days? Someone took a supply camp = Exploit!! Someone killed me in PvP = Exploit.
If you think this is an exploit, what are you even doing in WvW, the mind boggles.
From what I can see, nothing was really patched. What was so urgent aNet that you had to shut it down / restart it with no notice whatsoever?
Can we have a response please for EU/NA players, as too why you are doing this and whether you are going to stop doing it during primetime or at the very, VERY least provide some sort of notification that gives players ample warning.
I just don’t get why there is zero notification. For people in the EU this is the only time some people can get on for organised WvW with their guild. It’s a kick in the nuts.
Arena net, WHAT ARE YOU DOING. You just shut down WvW on the EU during PRIMETIME. We had literally just killed the keep lord after a siege and without ANY notice you dump as all to Lions Arch. You cannot do things like this, especially during primetime. Unbelievable.
Out of all the “issues” that apparently face Elementalists, you choose the biggest non issue ever in the history of non issues to discuss. Seriously how much time did you waste on this? Not once when I have levelled any profession have I ever, ever been concerned about how long it was taking to unlock those abilities.
If you spend this much time worrying about such a pointless aspect of the class, I only shudder to think what you might come up with in regards to Elementalists over all. Probably an analysis of how Dragon’s Tooth doesn’t fall correctly.
Oh and if a player is taking until level 20 to unlock all the weapon abilities, well then I’d suggest computer games aren’t for them lol.
- Fix RTL
- Fix Grasping Earth
- Reduce the cooldown on attunement swapping and change the bonus in Arcana
- Reduce the animation delay on some abilities which currently make them useless, I’m looking at you Dragon’s Tooth.
And general bug fixes.
You act like every single class in every game are balanced equally. They’re not. They never will be, the best you can do is get them relatively close.
We can go round and round with this. Some classes will always have a higher skill cap than others. Druids were horrible at the beginning of WoW. Hardly anyone played them, but I liked it because it required more attention than other classes. Later on druids got a bunch of bug fixes and some buffs, but the fact remains that the people who were terrible at the class before were still terrible and struggled. (This is before everything became easy mode)
I’m not against some small buffs / small bug fixes. Mostly bug fixes. But if you think getting buffs is going to change your ability to play the class. You’re in for a surprise……
Agree with this completely, bug fixes should be the number one focus. I just aNet does not do anything silly with the profession to appease the masses that won’t take the time to learn how to play it. I think the attention and effort you have to put into an Ele is the selling point of the profession. For me the other professions are just a bit repetitive in comparison, the one exception I have found is an Engineer as the playstyle is actually quite similar, the attunement swapping you do on an Ele is mirrored in part to the Kit swapping you have to do as an Engineer.
Honestly you should expect it, it’s part of the game design. I’ve had people rally of animals before, I’ve CC’d them so they can’t escape, downed them again and finished them off properly, I don’t think anyone has every gotten away from me even if they do rally.
Ele’s need bug fixes, I really, really, really hope aNet doesn’t dumb down the profession because a group of people are too lazy to learn the class. You can see where they are coming from, for example. Someone creates a warrior, runs around pressing 1111111,22222222,1111111 and not really worrying about much. They then roll and elementalist and try and do the same thing.
Obviously it doesn’t work and they end up here whining. You can kind of see their point, when you look at how simple other professions are, but the “complexity” (I wouldn’t even call it complex) is what defines the profession.
Just tonight I messaged a Necro I had a good 1v1 with to say good fight and he was shocked that I beat him, his statement was “Ele’s suck, I normally kill them, easily”. I replied, “Well most aren’t every good”. And that unfortunately is the root cause of a lot of the griping people do on the forums.
Now I’m not being an elitist but most Ele’s I see in WvW and I kill in WvW are just horrible players and I really question what they are doing. A fight tonight with a sceptre/dagger Ele, he kept on trying to land dragons tooth on me without attempting any kind of root/slow. I have no idea what he was try to do, he tried an updraft on me when I was in mist (was tanking arrow carts at the time lol) and various other basic errors. I honestly think people roll an Ele because they think they can just stand there and pew pew things down, well it doesn’t work like that.
You really do have to look at your build, gear, traits. Pick a weapon set that suits your playstyle, understand combo fields, use rotations. Playing an Ele is not like the other professions where you can literally get away with pressing 1,1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2,1,1,1 and stuff dies.
Now I sincerely hope, that aNet don’t try and dumb down Ele’s in any way to cater for people that just don’t get/understand how to play them. Sure they can use some tweaks and they definitely need the bugs ironing out, but then most professions do.
Ultimately there isn’t anything that wrong with Ele’s, be patient, learn the class.
I have a level 80 Mesmer & a level 80 Ele. I never play my Mesmer, my Ele is my main toon and I levelled my Mesmer to 80 first. Ele’s are not as bad as people make them out to be, it’s takes more effort to be good with an Ele, than other professions.
My advice, level both to 2 goto the mists, mess around with weapon sets, traits, different play styles. There are mobs you can spar with as well as target dummies, whichever feels more fun for you, roll that one.
From an sPvP point of view though, go Mesmer.
I know this has been discussed many times, so I apologise if people are tired of talking about it. Any word on whether the rendering issues will be fixed / addressed with the patch on the 15th? I’m specifically talking about thieves here, because no other profession benefits more from the rendering problems and quite frankly I am sick and tired of being killed by thieves I can’t see, it’s beyond ridiculous, considering the burst they can do, this gives thieves such a massive advantage.
So basically, is this being fixed with the patch on the 15th? Quite frankly, I’m tired of if and so are a lot of other people.
Well thieves get’s stealth which makes up a LOT for the lack of base HP, I don’t have a lot of experience with guardians, what do they get? Higher base toughness? Block chance?
Most of the Ele’s I run into are using D/D. The others are Scepter/Dagger or Staff, but they are becoming a rarity.
D/D builds with points in Earth/Water/Arcana feel “about right”. You do enough damage and have just about enough survivability, but obviously that is the intention with the build. There is however an abundance of terrible players who do the following:
1) Try and Face Tank my damage
2) Never Dodge
3) Never Cleanse
4) Make little or no attempt to kite
5) Seemingly just press 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1…..
These are the players that probably head to the forums or complain in game. A D/D Ele in the hands of a good experienced MMO player will make other players look utterly useless. This is down to well used and timed mobility, smart use of CC’s, cleansing when you are supposed, timing of abilities rotations. I solo roam and win 99% of my 1v1 fights, some 2v1’s with my highest being a 4v1, however the players involved in the 1 vs many fights were terrible. When you meet a player of equal skill, you have to work 2x or 3x as hard as that opposition player just to keep up and you basically outlast them.
D/D Bunker is an attrition build, it is designed to wear people down, that is the whole rationale behind the build. People are wrongly saying that they are fine with a nerf to D/D builds if they buff other areas, well unless they significantly buff our base health and toughness we will STILL be in a poor place compared to other professions. Other professions can get away with traiting and gearing for more damage because they have more inherent survivability (higher base health pool or base toughness). Thief is an excellent example of this, extremely high spike/burst damage but with low health/toughness, however they can get away with it because of the stealth mechanic.
If they are going to do anything, they need to do the following:
1) Fix the outstanding bugs/glitches with abilities, RTL is till buggy, Magnetic Grasp is buggy, I still see miss, miss, miss on lightning 1/2 abilities
2) Rework our Elites, Tornado needs an overhaul.
3) Consider reducing attunement cooldowns across the board so that people aren’t that reliant on Arcana.
4) Bring our damage back in line with other professions. I honestly believe that it was nerfed in early beta without proper thought going into the changes. Back in early beta, people did not know / understand their professions, I doubt they dodged or even new much about conditions/boons, cleansing. I myself remember standing there and eating a dragon’s tooth/phoenix/fire grab to the face, now I never, never get caught in any AoE’s it’s so easy to avoid ground targeted AoE.
And if they absolutely insist on changing bunker type builds, review our base survivability and buff our health pools, offensive builds are not viable because our survivability is ridiculously low outside of traiting /gearing for it. Or consider changing some of the higher level traits under air to add evasion/dodge chances under certain conditions to give us a mechanic to help mitigate damage.

heck, even borrow an Sandy or Ivy- i5 if you’re so desperate.my points is, Intel processor performs better when it comes to net games where large crowd is involved.
It has nothing to do with my processor, did you even read my original post? The game was performing FINE up until today, I had no lag, no FPS drop, I’ve been running the same settings since early beta with no problems. Just last week I was running fraps to record WvW, now I can barely even play WvW. Something has changed somewhere within anet’s game…
I did not ask for a CPU recommendation from an Intel fanboi.

The change in performance is noticeable in all areas, regardless of their population. I have tested the starting areas, Lions Arch, random other maps, different characters WvW Maps, all the same weird performance decrease.
This is not a spec issue, nor has anything changed on my system, this was running perfectly up until today. My spec is as follows:
Windows 7 64 bit
Amd Phenom x4 965 BE (Water Cooled CPU)
ATI HIS Radeon 6950 (Latest drivers, even tested with new beta driver release)
8 Gb Crucial Ballistix Ram
OS + GW2 Running off SSD
There have been no updates, support packs, hotfixes installed onto my system, so logically thinking….arena net must have changed something on their servers or done some kind of code update to introduce performance problems.
I have changed multiple in game settings to see if there is an improvement, but there is still a massively noticeable frame rate drop at all setting levels, it is very, very strange.

Done some more testing and something has definitely changed, even on the lowest graphics settings the game is jerking around and laggy. It has never done this before.

Did something change? There have been no patches, my system is exactly the same as it was yesterday, yet I have noticed a significant drop in performance, so much so that the game is bordering on unplayable. Other people have noticed a noticeable drop in performance. I have never had ANY performance problems at all, in any zones, areas etc… and I’ve been running with everything on max since the game launched.
So have aNet changed something and not told us?
I DO know… because you can see if they are 80 or not.. and the FOE I was killing had no arrow up next to his level. So Thank you for your constructive post.

I agree that there are a large percentage of players who struggle in a PvP situation, some don’t react in time, make poor decisions, don’t position properly, don’t use stun breakers etc… etc… and that definitely plays into peoples perceptions when they get killed by someone.
I have yet to speak to anyone, ever, anywhere who has stated that Elementalist’s are OP :P And as for the thief I play with, I duo with this player daily, I watch him down players before I even get into range, repeatedly. I am going from 1st hand experience of what I see him doing, he tells me how he does it.
And as for the “3 shot” not existing, it’s not existing because YOU are saying it doesn’t exist.. I have combat log screenshots + fraps footage of this in action.
Alpha strike builds like this are not good for any game, it leads to calls of unbalance and rightly so. People are not calling for the profession to be nerfed into the ground, they are calling for balance.
There are no “1-shots” or even “perma-stealth” builds without drawbacks:
Some repeated misconceptions:
1) 1-shots: there’s always time to react if you’re an average-skilled player (but most players are casuals who didn’t even manage to complete the “tower jumping puzzle”). Even the engineer-burst video isn’t a one-shot. It needs several grenande volleys on a stunned player. So it’s either dodgeble, blockable, breakable (stun) etc.
Concerning thieves, a possible combo:
Activate new Assassin’s Signet: 15% on next 5 attacks:
Cloak and Dagger activation
Steal (mug)
Cloak and Dagger now hits
Backstab
Autoattacks or HeartseekersThis is no 1-shot and needs positional accuracy which can easily denied. Also, the thieves doing this are often experienced roamers (WvW/sPvP) and know how to take out a target. It’s your own fault if you don’t specc for survivability/vitality/toughness and move across a map without support. Then you may be in a serious danger of dying – that’s fine.
Not to mention: a lot of WvW/sPvP players haven’t even played a main for a continuous time and aren’t maxed (gear in WvW) or use subpar gear/trait/skill sets.
Also: No Thief can sneak up to you from distance without getting noticed. If a thief gets into steal-range you gotta be prepared – if you don’t have a stun breaker then it’s your own fault.
2) There’s no such thing as perma-stealth. There’s only a problem with rendering/culling (mesmers/thieves/shadow refugees). But a thief cannot maintain a huge and repeated uptime on stealth without reducing damage significantly because he had to choose stealth skills instead of signets for his utility slots. There are some video of thieves abusing the rendering issues (point capture) – but they won’t “5-shot” (cf. above) anyone.
I beg to differ on both points. Point 1, I am an above average player, I solo roam or I duo with a thief buddy, we fight against larger groups of players and normally win. If I’m solo, I expect to get into 1v1’s, 2v1’s, 3v1’s etc… I know how to handle myself and regularly get messages from players I killed saying I’m a good player. I know the consequences of solo/small group roaming. I have THREE stun breakers (cantrips) on my utility bar, just so I can avoid getting stunned -> nuked. Thieves CAN and DO “1-shot people”, technically it takes 3 key presses and they are normally using Devourer’s Venom. But I’ve been killed by a thief with this same combo and been unable to react in time before I’m down.
Point 2, Thieves can have an extended time in stealth while repeatedly stealthing and retaining very. very decent damage. Just the other day while roaming, myself and my thief buddy came across a thief doing this exact same thing. We honestly thought he was hacking, due to the constant stealthing and the damage he was able to put out. So we figured out how he was doing it, my friend replicated his build (we spoke to the opposition player who was doing it) and showed me, it was possible.
Don’t assume that every player who is complaining about thieves is some kind of back-peddling half-brain with the reactions of a sloth. There are good players with legitimate concerns over the state of thieves and as I’ve said, thieves themselves admit aspects of their profession are overpowered (anet agress), I duo with a thief who kills people in 2-3 seconds (he engages from stealth, so they cannot counter), he himself agrees that thieves need toning down, other thieves agree that they need toning down. Then there are the players who don’t want anet to take their toy away, those who rely on class gimmicks and not skill.
I have a number of friends who play thief, some of them are, very, very good at the class. I’ve asked them, do you think thieves are Op at the moment, every single one replied “Yes”. I duo WvW with a full beserker/exotic thief I watch him down players before I am even in range, the damage he can put out is just nuts and he does this consistently.
I have come across thieves in WvW (and before you pipe up, I know it’s WvW and peoples gear can be vastly different) that can and do kill players in under 2 seconds. I’m a full exotic bunker built Ele, I came across a thief who was consistently doing between 16-19k damage with Steal, Cloak & Dagger, Backstab with Backstab critting for between 8-9k, my health pool at the time was 16.8k. He would down me before I even had a chance to react. Considering I am bunker/tank character, imagine the amount of damage he would be doing to any glass cannon built players.
No profession should be able to down a player before they have a chance to react, I don’t care how “squishy” you keep telling people they are, as stealth makes up for having less survivability.
Does thief need toning down? Absolutely.

I’m toughness stacked (including runes/jewels etc…) a pure glass cannon Ele would have somewhere in the region of 13k HP. What does that gibberish mean “Your enemy could use 5-6 skills and you failed to use neither?” Are you saying the thief used abilities on me and I didn’t? Each time the thief in question nuked me, he did Steal → Cloak & Dagger → Backstab and I’m down. 3 hits, engaging from 900 metres, 18k damage in under 2 seconds. I know how to counter professions, I can’t counter ones I can’t see, that can down me before I press a key, that’s my issue.
I would have the same complaints if it was another profession doing it to me. People complain about Warriors, it’s ridiculously easy to counter warriors that try stun → hundred blades, yes they can do a LOT of damage if they catch you with it, but it is easily counterable, thieves are not, that is the issue.

I spent a considerable amount of time yesterday, going round the WvW borders with my thief friend. He is a full exotic berserker thief, I am running full Exotic Knights gear, stacking power, precision toughness with the emphasis on toughness. I only use D/D and spec for 10 Air, 10 Earth, 20 Water and 30 Arcana and I run 3 cantrips, Mist, Lightning Flash and Cleansing Fire.
We were taking on much larger groups than ourselves and winning the fights, the DPS he can put out is astronomical, it then dawned on me. He has the same amount of survivability as myself through his class mechanic yet he is a full berserker thief. In comparison, I am a sem-bunker build, can’t do a quarter of his DPS and have to work my behind off just too keep up.
If I specced for a full glass cannon build, I would literally melt as soon as anything looked in my direction, purely because Ele’s do not have the base survivability/toughness or class mechanic that negates our squishiness, and I would still not be able to get anywhere near to the amount of damage my thief buddy throws out there, he can down players in under 2 seconds.
The thief is probably an extreme example, he freely admits that thieves are OP at the moment, but my point is…some professions are more suited for glass cannon specs than others, I think the Ele is not one of those classes, we shine in support/bunker roles, maybe that was anet’s intention for the profession from the get go.
ANY bunker build from any profession can be annoying/difficult to fight against. Don’t blame Ele’s for being forced into tanky builds, more damage orientated specs are a death sentence. I play a fairly tanky D/D build and I LOVE KILLING warriors and thieves, I haven’t lost a 1v1 yet (or even the 2v1 I had against a warrior and thief yesterday). I can just imagine the rage when a warrior tries that bull rush + hundred blades crap on me and I promptly turn around and plant them on their behind.
LOL. There’s no way you 1v2’d a competent warrior and thief. Also bullrushing frenzied warriors usually have endure pain active so you can’t do kitten to him.
Oh just yesterday I killed 5 people in a 1v5 and was capturing 3 points at the same time too.
The warrior was most definitely a better player than the thief (the thief blew all his iniative heartseeker spamming me while I dodged lol) but it still stands. I’ve won many 2v1’s, Warrior + Thief, Ranger + Guardian, 2 x Guardians, Ranger + Ele. And these were all level 80 players, I did speak to the warrior, only to thank him for the good fight, didn’t ask him what his exact setup was, he was using GS/Rifle.
I specifically spec and play my ele for 1 vs many encounters, purely because I hate zerging. So I roam around looking for good fights against good players. Why do people think Warriors are so good and ele’s are so bad, Warriors are so predictable and easy to counter, same with the other professions.
I have an 80 Mesmer & 80 Ele, I would take my Ele over my Mesmer any day for WvW.
