In my experience (I’m only 51 atm), the lower levels for Guardians are pretty tough. That’s because of the really low base HP. It does get better as you get higher though.

One thing that will help a whole lot is to make sure your gear is up to level. Buy stuff off the TP that fits your level. It’s fairly cheap and keeps your stats up to par.

Also, get a good scepter/focus or shield to compliment your main melee weapon. You can easily solo stuff with just kiting and scepter.

You can get really close.

1) Change Rune of Rage to Rune of Scholar or Rune of Lyssa (whichever route you want to go).

2) Then suppliment with Lemongrass (really nice and there’s 2 different ones) or Asparagus food (good ).

3) Then suppliment w/ Mainteneance Oil.

Off the top of my head, I’m running the same 0/15/30/20/5 (though slightly different) and my stats are:
3190 Attack
2400 Armor
38% Crit
99% Crit dmg
17.2 HP

… actually have a screen shot, wasn’t tooooo far off. lol =]

Your other option is instead of putting in Runes, put in Jewels.

I asked this on the hammer topic yesterday, but what armor, sigils, and trinkets are you using?

That’s one thing I don’t understand. I questioned the mentality of keeping crit chance @ 50% or less in the Player Helping Player forum and got some interesting answers. Yeah, crit chance is capped in other games, but not in gw2 from what I understand. You can get 100% crit chance and make your attacks keep crit’ing every time you hit. I think the diminishing returns comes from when you are adding all those points to get crit chance at 100% in which adding points to other stats are more beneficial. Other than that, I don’t see why people continue to preach keeping crit chance at less than 50%, especially if you are trying a glass cannon guardian.

What I’m looking at is, would you rather have half your attacks crit’ing with 50%, 2/3rd’s of your attacks with 75%, or every single hit you make at 100%?

After a week or so of play in wvw, I have determined that I am very happy with my build. The only class that still gives me problems is a well played thief or other guardians because they take so long. I have had some great 1 vs. 1’s and I just wreck people. To necros, I just want to apologize because it’s simply not fair.

My final build is still;
10/25/30/0/5 using Fiery Wrath, Signet Mastery, Searing Flames, Retributive Armor, Focused Mind, and Monk’s Focus

full meditation build with healing signet

Hammer and Staff

I no longer swap out for scepter and focus while seiging, the staff #2 works well enough for my purposes and staff #3 targeted on walls is very similar to scepter #2

Only thing I am not happy with is the 13.5k health and I think this is the reason this build has trouble with thieves; simply because they can land 5k crits and 3 shot me (or anyone else…balance ftw I guess).

Otherwise, I have improved some armor/accessories and with 61% crit damage and 55% crit chance now I can pull some hefty numbers. I almost feel like a thief because I catch people holding off on blowing their heal and I can take them from 50% health to zero in two moves.

This sounds like a nice build. What’s your armor stats? What armor, runes, sigils, jewelry are you using?

I was thinking of doing a 10/5/30/20/5 myself with berserker equipment, but the armor rating was like 2.2k and health was 17k

Do you enjoy arguing with yourself GraynX because I think all of us have established that Stun Breaks does equal out to surviving. I don’t know why you keep thinking we are saying otherwise. Just evidence that you aren’t really paying attention to what we are saying.

I do argue with both you and Amins however that surviving = escaping. Two different mechanics here, but as you said, that’s just opinion, and its a pointless arguement.

Honestly though, you do NEED a way to get out with a DPS build. Youre too squishy, even with mitigations/damage avoidance. Those wonderful tools are quickly used up in a zerg situation in W3. So no, the Guardian DPS build does not have tools that are effective.

I don’t think anyone is really asking for an overpowered option here, which is what you and others are making it sound like.

No no, just RL keeping me occupied. I promise that ill post, properly tomorrow while i watch jags hopefully beat the jets

Oh I was just joking about that Konfuzfanten, and yeah I hope the jags shoot down the jets!

I don’t think we need to define Escape anymore then it already is. The OP wanted ways to get away from attackers. We have stun breaks that free us from control effects. One of those skills has a long duration swiftness. We have three teleports (one defensive, two offensive) and a leap or two. Most of those are distance closers, but we are melee and that is what we should be doing.

I don’t really care if your play style is to do a quick hit and then make a build that allows you to run away from the battle. But, that is more of a Thief playstyle, imo.

To say we have no means of escape is not true. The point is, we are not large burst with instant disengage. Our job is to be the center of attention. We have distance closers and steady retreats. Our mitigation is what saves us…as long as you play smart.

I don’t think you read much of Hostility’s posts have you nor have you read what Amins just posted. Escape is not Stun Breakers. That’s survivability to possibly aid you in escape, which doesn’t if you face more than a couple people with stun abilities. They just reapply them and then what? No escape.

Amins that first post makes a lot of sense there.

1) we are the class with the most avoidance skills/passives. If you dont know that then aint playing a guardian.
2) i should have said effective HPs.

I’m going to assume you mean avoidance as in damage avoidance, not as in avoiding the enemy which was the point of this thread. If that’s the case, then yeah, I’ll give you those two points. But no amount of hps and damage avoidance is going to help when you get focused, which you do when you go melee, which is a guardians only real means of contributing dps to the party. Unless that is, you play support and watch from the back.

Lonewolf Kai.3682

Survivability is not only related to toughness, HP and healing power, in fact in wvw mobility + steath offers much more survivability than VTH especially when u face multiple numbers. In this point, guardian is far from highest survivability in wvw. Ele, thief, mesmer, engi have better survivability than guardian.

Yes survivability is not only tgh, vita, healing, stealth or running away. Its also about how long you can keep a zerg one in place and survive: no one does that better then guardians(Tankcat engi can do something similar, but doesnt have the cc to back it up). WvW isnt about 1vsX fighting, its XvsX fighting. The guardian is not design to be a gung ho lone ranger, but a mass control class. And we pay for that ability in terms of range firepower and escape tools.

Lets say we kept a our current defensive abilities and then got a powerful 1200 ft range option or even more escape tools, how would you die? You would be then guy with the most avoidance skills, best armour, medium-high HPs, great heal abilities, multiple blinds, most cond removers, near perma swiftness AND then the ability to pewpew ppl at 1200 ft or instant escape combat? You cant see thats broken? I would call that game breaking.

And you don’t see what’s severely wrong with that!?

No i dont, because i can see why we dont have those tools, and we are not the only class that sucks at getting away. Ask a necro or warrior about escape tools.

……except that they have range. They can choose to go melee or range. Guardians do not have that choice.

You can also input range without making it overpowered easily. Why does have a 1200 range option have to be powerful? It could be the crappiest dps weapon in the game, but it would at least give us the option of not jumping in just to be zerged.

Also, there isn’t a need for a huge escape means. What about the suggestions made already such as making sword #2 non-target dependent? I’d hardly say they would be unbalanced.

Also, “most avoidance skills” and “medium-high hps”? Lol, Whaaaaat!?

Every class in GW2 has weakness, the guardians main weakness are 1) craptastic range attacks 2) lack of escape tools.

And you don’t see what’s severely wrong with that!?

All classes should have one or the other. If you’re going to have decent range ability then you should have crappy escapes, if you’re melee, which is what guardian really is, then you need a good escape to get out of ranged fire.

One should cancel out the other. A class shouldn’t have a double cancel with theses two particular points.

I think most of your are missing Hostility’s point by trying to tell everyone work-arounds. That point is Guardians are missing two important aspects all other classes do a lot better with: range and escape.

I’ve only done a little W3 myself, but lets face it, W3 is a range game. If you go melee, you need good escape.

Sure all of you do have some good suggestions, and I’ll take these to mind, but maybe there does need to be some changes. Increase scepter’s range, give us a bow or gun. A simple un-fix to sword #2 to require no target. Increase the range for Merciful Intervention and definitely reduce that CD.

Not asking for all of those, but just throwing out some ideas there.

@Sylv: No, not really. You and those that debate about the importance of having a grind in games all abuse the term Entitlement. What you are describing, and apparently defending, is an interpretational meaning to the word, whereas I take a more literal meaning to the word, thus semantics in your case. Semantics do not necessarily mean your interpretation is wrong, but it doesn’t make it correct usage either. Dense or not, its something that leaves room for pointless debate. And this has just what it has become.

Calling someone out for entitlement is a tired, abused term much in the same way as calling someone a “noob.” Lets put it this way: by your same argument, I could simply say you feel entitled to having a grind because YOU want it to be harder so YOU can get it with more required effort. So calling entitlement is pointless, both in meaning and context.

@Mangarrage: I can concede to that. As I stated earlier, although in more rougher terms, there’s two factions here: those with a lot of time on their hands and those that do not have (or will not make in some cases[ie laziness]) the time.

@Olkyr: Except that entitlement also infers a more personal meaning. I’m not the only one that feels this way about the grinding. Also, I never stated my own standards. Further, you’re crossing the line of semantics and definition, and that’s a pointless argument.

@Terrahero: That would be more inline with what the game feel is about. I was indeed surprised and disappointed about it as well.

Game Improvement - Suggestions

in Suggestions

I have a suggestions list that came from the Rangers forum. This is a formal request by the ranger community as organized from here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/New-Pets-Ideas-Suggestions/first.

This is a list from people who want to see new pets added to the system for either an update, expansion, or even a black lion buy.

My personal suggestion is to add more of the monsterous pets like the drakes. For example, I’d like to have a Ridgeback Scale as an amphibian pet. I’d even pay RL money ala Gems at the Black Lion for it, even if it had the same abilities as other pets (ie just a skin-over like the HoM pets).

So for example, my #1 request is a Ridgeback Scale.

Here is the current request list by the community broken down into types:

Amphibian:
-Large Ridgeback Scale
-Crab
-Crocodile
-Turtle
-Otter
-Walrus
-Dragon
-Any Mythological Creature

Terrestrial:
-Griffon
-Raptor
-Wurm
-Minotaur
-Oakheart
-Branded Creatures
-Snake
-Rockdog
-Warg
-Any of the weasel family: Badger, Wolverine, Ferret etc.
-Warbeasts of Harathi Hinterlands
-Armadillo
-Grub
-Fox
-Rabbit
-Dolyak
-Stag
-Tropical Birds: Parrot, Macaw, etc.
-Moose
-Phoenix
-Flamingo
-Cliff Bat
-Lion: Male and Female versions
-Ram
-Longhorned Sheep
-Other subtypes of canine
-House Cat
-Translucent Wolf Spirt
-Gorilla
-Swarm of Insects: Bees, Hornets, Wasps, etc.
-Large Praying Mantis
-Prehistoric Creatures
-Sabertooth Tiger
-Alpine Stalker
-Colocal
-Skelk

Aquatic:
-Eel
-Lighting Fish (Deep sea types?)
-Dolphin
-Whale
-Tuna
-Barracuda
-Sunfish
-Goliath Tigerfish
-Angler
-Wels Catfish

In general, to be able to charm any creature out there would be nice.

Also, one thing that bothers several people is that the pet size does not change at all. A pet should grow in size with level ala GW1.

Purchaseable simple new skins (like the HoM pets are skins over top existing pets), armor, accessories, etc. for pets from the Gem Store was also suggested by several people.

I REALLYwant….

Nothing in life comes easy, whether it be real or in game. The simple fact that you wish it were easier to get a unique weapon skin, and argue that you can’t put in the hours to farm the reqs, indicate that you feel a bit entitled to it as a paying customer.

Anet made requirements to get it. Now it’s the players’ choice to pursue the requirements, or not. But you do have to put effort into getting certain tokens that make up the sub-reqs for the Legendary.

And just a side note on “grinding”. It exists in this game. Do you have to do it? No. Is it required to completed the game? No. Is it required to have fun? No. Anet succeeds in these aspects. But how dare Anet put in rewards to players who do make extra effort to “grind” for the good stuff.

If you’d like me to define entitlement to you, I can. But do yourself a favor and look up the meaning. You apparently have a reading comprehension problem, which is quite common nowadays, especially when something is being taken a little personally. Step back from the thread a bit and re-read what I said in previous posts. It may help to read it aloud.

A request for reduced requirements and/or complaining about current conditions does NOT equate to entitlement. Period. Now if I said, “Anet should just give me a legendary because I bought the game,” then you would have grounds on blaming me for that. However, I never once said that. Please stop implying that is what I am saying because it’s not.

I realize, and agree with, that there should be some sort of requirement to aquire these illustrious weapons. However, I don’t agree with the grinding part. That’s a matter of opinion, which is something you can actually claim “entitlement!” on me for, but then you are entitled to that as well.

I could also debate the part about “required” to be “completed” and to “have fun” , but that would come down to semantics and opinions, and discussing that is pointless.

On a more personal note, you are also implying to a degree that I, myself, am not willing to work for them, which I’ve already stated I was going to try to get one.

And your point about grinding existing in the game, that’s supposed to address the point I made about the game boasting/advertising that grinding won’t be in the game? That doesn’t really address the point I made, if anything, it supported the point.

To everyone else, if it is true, which its unconfirmed for now, about the legendaries providing extra damage, even if slight, it is still an advantage over someone that does not have one, especially in terms of WvW and combat moves that damage multiple opponents. In a 1vs1 situation, I can see no advantage, however adding another person and then advantage comes in. Thus grinding equates advantage, something yet again, that Anet has advertised their game as against. However, I won’t debate that anymore since it is unconfirmed. They may have been changed since Beta.

Seriously. mangarrage makes some good points, and you should listen to it. I’ll try to simplify the arguments so you can understand, since you contradict yourself in your post.

1) Legendary weapons are OPTIONAL.
2) Legendary weapons are purely COSMETIC (save for the tiny increase in damage output).
3) Legendary weapons are meant as rewards for putting time and effort into the “grind” to make them.
4) If Anet made it available for everyone in the Gem store, lots of people would have them, thus reducing the “awe” factor. At the same time, people would QQ that only rich players could afford it.
5) You say it’s not about entitlement, yet you go on to say it takes so long to get. Thus, you just told everyone that you feel Anet should make it easier to get (as you feel Entitled to it).

This game is for everyone.

Let me refute some of that with some simple comments so you can be sure you get the meaning to it.

1. Never said Legs weren’t optional and that they are required.
2. No arguments there, thus my suggestion for the gem store. That’s there for cosmetics which include armor skins. I see no reason to refrain from adding weapon skins as well.
3. Time and effort is fine, grinding is not. (See #4 response.)
4. It was just a suggestion, my point was that maybe there could be alternatives to a grind, which is just not fun anymore. I’ve been there/done that, done it again, done it again, and again; grinding is just not a fun feature anymore. Also, I personally don’t have the time for grinding like I used to.
5. I also never once said, Anet should just give me a legendary outright for no reason. That’s the true meaning to entitlement. Did I once say there shouldn’t be some effort to get them? The gem store suggestion could be a yes to that, but again, that was just a suggestion off the top of my head (see response #2 and your #2). I simply “complained” about the amount of grinding involved. I think the effort needed to get them is simply outrageous and at least needs to be reduced a good bit.

As I explained, which you seem to ignored, I and many other casual gamers simply do not have the time to put into it for them, thus being punished by our playstyle. So, no, argumentively, the entire game is not for everyone, just most of it. Further, that unconfirmed little bit of extra damage output could be put into another argument against grinding requirements altogether in terms of advantages for those that do not own one.

I see no contradictions in what I wrote before.

I’d also like to point to the part where I said that I find it ironic that a game that claims to get rid of grinding put some major grinding in it for some of its features. I noticed you chose to ignore that too in your rebutal.

@mangarrage,

LOL@ calling EQ a 1st generation game. I’m going to assume you meant 1st gen MMO.

For the record, I come from the generation where Pong was the only game you could get at home besides a bulky Astroids system. And yes, I still have mine. It’s up in the attic if you want to ever play it with me.

For some of us who are “complaining” about the grind, its not about entitlement, its about time constraints and the penalty we get for that. It’s something I’ve delt with for several years now and looks like something I’ll have to deal with again if I want those items. I find it ironic that a game that boasts of getting rid of grinding, still adds a grinding element to the game.

As far as forcing you to grind, yes, ANet is doing that by offer those legendaries and if you want them. On the other hand, if ANet offered the weapons via gem store AND through grinding, then there would be other options. Afterall, they are just costmetic items, and that would make more sense. I’m actually amazed nothing like them are offered in teh store. It would be a source of income.

@Matt. I think the Exlpore gifts are Account bound, meaning you can transfer them to your other toons. I also think the Explore Gift requirement is ridiculous. I concur on getting rid of that requirement.

I see two factions here: Grinders and Casual Gamers.

Personally, I feel grinding is an out of date mechanic, especially in todays current gaming market. I am glad that most games are going towards the casual side. GW2 was supposed to be a casual game. Legendaries are not casual items.

Oh well, I guess us Casual’ers will be punished yet again for not being able to devote the hours required into the game for those specific items. That sucks for me as well since I like to RP some with my characters. I’ll eventually get one, but it’ll be years before I can make one, if I make it that long. By that time, new Ledgendaries will be out from further content expansions, but I guess I can go ahead and exclude those.

Oh and incidently, the beta testers who made the two greatswords said it took them 200 hours for each weapon to make.

-Just my 2 worthless cents.

@Acaelus, I do agree that the list is getting rather large, but it’s what the people want.

@Riles, yeah, pets in general are too squishy, and I don’t particularly like the solution of using bears only. That defeats the purpose of having so many choices. One thing that will help a little is to add points into the Beastmastery trait.

*Updated the list with new requests.

I’m with you there Storm. In fact, in the book series I am writing, I’ve kept the creature true to its original name.

But can someone tell me what a Calacal is?

I’ve already got a thread for this going so I’ll just add the new requests to that one. No sense in having multiple threads going, aye?

Sorry I’ve been AFK for a day and half now, but I’ll be updating this list shortly to reflect the recent posts.

Also, I’m going to hold off a few more days before pasting this into the suggestions thread to be sure everyone has their requests in.

Yep I agree, and we might possible not see any new additional pets until an expansion/dlc. But I do hope to see possible options in the Black Lion Trading Gem shop as well.

Gotcha

I’m also putting this into the stickied Suggestions thread in the General Discussion Forum after a couple days. However, I’m afraid it’s going to get lost in there.

Personally, I like the quantity. ;p However, I feel a combination of the two would be more ideal.

As far as the animations go, they already exist for currently existing monsters that aren’t pets. Look at the drakes for example. They use the same mechanics.

No thats okay. I see what you’re saying, but I am also trying to find a way to make it easier at least to get different pets in without the necessity of balancing. When you factor in new skills in, balancing comes into play.

Perhaps a good mix of the two would be in call. Some pets are skin-overs, others have their own unique sets of skills.

Well you can only have so many skills before they start becoming the same thing. When I say skin-over, what I mean is that they take say a red drake, remove the artwork and add a ridgeback scale artwork over it, then make it a tameable beast in game. You have essentially two red drakes in game, but different names. Time and effort shouldn’t be a problem for the skin over idea, especially if the artwork is already there. Now adding different skills will be a different story, considering balancing, but overall shouldn’t be that difficult either.

I’m not sure about Ettins. Aren’t they essential humanoids?

Nice ideas Faolchu, I’ll add those to the list.

I think it has a lot of potential and should be fairly easy to implement.

That’s pretty funny, but don’t see that happening :p

I see another similar post was made with a specific title of griffon in it, but I’d like to combine that with this one. I’ve added the suggestions from those to the 1st post here.

A further suggestion made in the other thread, which was a bit like my original suggestion in my first post, was to make some of these skins available via gem purchases, and I think that’s an excellent idea! Not only would players benefit from this, it would also generate possible extra income for ANET.

I want to start up a listing of new pet ideas that people would like to see implemented. I figured I’d start a catch all with this post. So if you want to see a new pet added to the system for either an update, expansion, or even a black lion buy, list it here.

My suggestion is to add more of the monsterous pets like the drakes. For example, I’d like to have a Ridgeback Scale as an amphibian pet. I’d even pay RL money at the Black Lion for it, even if it had the same abilities as other pets (ie just a skin-over like the HoM pets).

So for example, my #1 request is a Ridgeback Scale.

I’m going to edit this periodically to include other specific suggestions in this post and other threads.

Here is the current request list broken down into types:

Amphibian:
-Large Ridgeback Scale
-Crab
-Crocodile
-Turtle
-Otter
-Walrus
-Dragon
-Any Mythological Creature

Terrestrial:
-Griffon
-Raptor
-Wurm
-Minotaur
-Oakheart
-Branded Creatures
-Snake
-Rockdog
-Warg
-Any of the weasel family: Badger, Wolverine, Ferret etc.
-Warbeasts of Harathi Hinterlands
-Armadillo
-Grub
-Fox
-Rabbit
-Dolyak
-Stag
-Tropical Birds: Parrot, Macaw, etc.
-Moose
-Phoenix
-Flamingo
-Cliff Bat
-Lion: Male and Female versions
-Ram
-Longhorned Sheep
-Other subtypes of canine
-House Cat
-Translucent Wolf Spirt
-Gorilla
-Swarm of Insects: Bees, Hornets, Wasps, etc.
-Large Praying Mantis
-Prehistoric Creatures
-Sabertooth Tiger
-Alpine Stalker
-Colocal
-Skelk

Aquatic:
-Eel
-Lighting Fish (Deep sea types?)
-Dolphin
-Whale
-Tuna
-Barracuda
-Sunfish
-Goliath Tigerfish
-Angler
-Wels Catfish

In general, to be able to charm any creature out there would be nice.

Also, one thing that bothers several people is that the pet size does not change at all. A pet should grow in size with level ala GW1.

Purchaseable armor, accessories, etc. from the Gem Store was also suggested.
