I had alot of fun in WoW, playing a tankadin in pvp.
I was what you call. Guardian. Hard to kill. Great Support. Medium dmg.
My advice, go back to WoW. This game, and especially this class, is not for you.
Go play something else. This games mechanics was DESIGNED to move away from old school trinity mechanics.
Complaining that it is not doing what it was not designed to do is incredibly silly.
You wont be able to get through to the OP. Cant teach an old dog new tricks.
The first four sentences are a perfect quote to you OP.
However, I beg to differ on the last one. I’m an old schooler too that had, and still has, the Pong game and I love this game.

So many amazing artists around and things like clipping just get in the way, just ignore it. Most players don’t care.
It’s about as important as Warriors vs Guardians is….
Renewed Focus is just pure gold. It can be used all the time and there’d be no problem. Solo, grouped, or zerged, its all good.
The tomes need some love, but they are also good situationally. They are good when grouped with a lot of people. But they aren’t that great when it comes to solo play.
I’d personally like to see a nerf to the tomes in favor of a decreased CD.
As far as I know, the Rox stuff is already in available.
I’m sure they’ll add things in as they go, but I don’t expect an ETA.
I’ve tried Supreme Justice before just for fun and it doesn’t make that much of a difference. The other traits are better for the slot instead, especially like what you said about soloing. The AE might be nicer though. I haven’t tried that yet.
I still like GW2BuildCraft better :p
@Hicci, Amins, and Alent:
I think the point eldain stenlund was trying to make was that a Warrior will outdo a Guardian when it comes to dps, not necessarily that a Guardian can’t do dps at all. He probably choose wrong wording for the point though, so I could see why the response.
@YoYoPete, check out the threads by Amins and Bash as well as Jax’s Silven guides, they have some great info on dps builds.
(edited by Lonewolf Kai.3682)
The point is though that you can still see where the spikes on the gloves stick through.
No thanks! I like my charr the way he is.
Same for me. I’m a console gamer and just got into PC gaming. This is my first game (more or less). First ever MMO.
My biggest tip I got was dont obsess over traits and skill point spending. You can re-purpose those as much as you want (when you hit certain levels you automatically get to redo them too) and there’s tons of skill points plus I think even after you max level you still acquire them from leveling.
Save all your karma and laurels for when you max level.
The game seems to drop enough stuff that I never worry about buying anything except I recently have (in my level 50s) so I can have matching armor or a nice hammer (never seem to get hammer drops).
I did tailoring and that seems to craft easily as I usually have supplies.
Salvage salvageable items and deposit collectibles to clear your inventory bags.
Do your dailys as often as you can. Or be conscious of trying to get them while you play your story.
Save all your jugs of karma and use a karma booster before you drink them. You’ll get both of those just from game play.
Find a guild with vent. I finally found a great guild that decently sized and everyone is so nice that it makes the game even more fun. Plus folks to help you. Lots of stuff in the game is geared for parties.
If you are solo, dont try and fight a champion.
If you have a nice graphics card and run max settings, use this to make it nicer looking: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/1ad6yn/for_those_asking_me_about_my_sweetfx_settings_for/
WvW will level you up fast.
If you think the PvE Story game map is big, it’s a fraction of how big the game really is.
Make dodging habit. Getting that to your reflex controls so that when you need it, it wont be foreign to use. Sometimes the daily will have a dodge achievement and you will need it to face other real players in PvP or WvW.
Try other character builds/classes/races to find the one that fits for you. I had about a dozen builds that were throw aways.
Change default key binding to ones that are logical to you. (I use a Logitech G13 gamepad with my left hand thumb for movement and it feels more like gaming as I come from consoles and computers are more WORKstations than PLAYstations..well till i got my video card anyway)
That’s all I can think of from a newbie to a newbie.
There is some okay info there. To me though, Events that are at level or slightly above level will give you better leveling overall.
I’d also argue about not buying gear. Good practice is to buy gear for the stats you want every so often during leveling. You can get good gear off the tp for fairly cheap and max out your stats. Buy green masterwork items at first. A good general rule of thumb is to do so every 10 levels or so. When you start being able to get rares, buy them instead.
I also looked at that SweetFX thread, and maybe it’s just my graphics gard, but those screenshots of the SweetFX-edited game look worse than the actual game settings at maxed visual settings.
Don’t think of tanking like you would in other mmorpgs. You won’t necessarily hold aggro in the game to be considered the tank. However, you can make the character to be able to tank in the sense of being able to take punishment and still live. In this game, those are called bunker builds. Further, there are several other classes that can fit this bill. So it isn’t just limited to guardians. That being said, guardians do lend themselves to bunker builds (ie tank’ers) more easily than others. Elementalists do as well.
Weapon choices are purely personal choice. Test them all out, and pick the ones you want.
If you still want to play guardian, and be the bunker build, check out the stickied thread above about Altruistic Healing and critting. Also check out the Paragon build thread. That’s a good build to start with. Since you’re wanting a bunker build, you’ll probably want to concentrate on toughness and maybe healing power. Clerics gear, knight’s gear, or a mix of the two might be a good choice for you.

Scammers say the same exact thing you just said Giratiina.
And yes, I know how a bank IRL works. The same principles do not apply here. You do not get a loan without collateral from them. The only loans you do get from them without collateral are from credit cards or personal loans. In game terms, that would be comparable to giving you a single piece of exotic gear. Game terms to real life, getting a precursor item loan would be like getting a mortgage from the bank. Mortgage = collateral or no loan for you.
Savvy?
Simple solution: change your gloves to less protuding ones.
You’d dare join with the ranks of those demons!?
<Snarl> Not I!!It’s fine by me. The dropping prices also gives Anet room to introduced crafted ascended items in the future if they wish to do so. That way you wont have the opposite effect, which would be ectos rising to insane prices simply because many of them are required to craft ascended gear.
Mists Essence will probably be a replacement for Ectos for crafting ascended gear.
Don’t count on it.
If possible, this could reap long term rewards for you, personally I am after the Legendary Weapon, the Juggernaut. The biggest hassle I have is making or finding the bloody precursor weapon. I’m fed up with feeding my gold down the drain to that stinking mystic toilet; so I have a proposition.
If you purchase me 1 ‘The Collossuss’ off of the BLTC, I would be willing to pay back a steady payment, the time period between each payment, the amount per payment and the interest rate is totally up to you (although I wouldn’t be cheap, I wouldnt like to be ripped off and you seem like an intelligent and humble person from what I’ve read). I play regularly enough that I can earn enough gold each day that will hopefully satisfy your ideal rate. Will be slower than investing in specific materials, but long term It will be rewarding. Thankyou for your time
(P.S: I’m not even sure what I’m asking is legal or not; forgive me if I crossed a line!)
Yours Sincerely
The Dawnbreakerr (Ehrmy Bay)
Did you really just post that? O.o
Anyways, OP, any of the legendary crafting requirements is always a good solid investment.
I also think that Ectos are at a good price for buying. Prices will go back up again. Buy low, sell high, and right now Ectos are looooow.
(edited by Lonewolf Kai.3682)
AH with PVT gear is pretty much full tank mode. I assume that’s your goal, so I don’t see the problem.
If you wanted DPS, you’re better off just starting from scratch.
I disagree with this. You can still keep the trait build, but switch out the gear to berserks or replace some of the gear with it.
@OP, you may also consider taking some trait points out of the build and do an x/x/30/20/x build, filling in the x’s with what you want. I used to run a 10/5/30/20/5 build and it was a lot of fun. Used double mediation (smite conditions and JI) with the third slot switched out for specific situations. My gear was a mixture of beserk, valk, soldier, and knights.
(edited by Lonewolf Kai.3682)
Also, one more perspective there Brut:
4. Those that like to max heal and toughness with a moderately heavy vitality. The bunkers. The dps won’t be as great though.
Just as a tidbit, I think the general idea is that anything more than 3k armor isn’t effective.
Do they still require fracs for the recipe?
(..)No one is going to even notice if you have an “exclusive dye color”, there are already so many shades across the color spectrum that no one will notice or care.(..)
Ha, yeah right, for what i saw, some of these colors ARE actually that good and do stand out. Even more, by having combined them with right equipment part you can get some really awesome and outstanding results. Neverless i do agree with rest you said :P
Well I main a Charr Guardian, tested them with the preview function (thanks Karizee.8076!) and didn’t notice THAT much of a difference. I was actually a bit disappointed. The one thing I did see is that the details on the back of the armor ( a two headed bird) showed up really well, enough for me to want the dye I looked at, but I sure am not going to pay 30 gold for the dye I wanted! On top of that, RNG and I don’t get along. The only luck I get is bad, so I make my own luck.
My computer has a “calculator” app and it takes about 10 seconds to multiply vendor price by 1.15 to find the minimum TP listing price. Even if you’re not looking for sales you can set it to this price and break even if it sells or take it back later for a 5% storage fee and use the item or break it down for crafting.
That’s 10 seconds per item, and if you have 100 inventory that’s 16 minutes, give or take, of time you could have farmed another couple dozen items worth ~1s each instead of trying to determine whether each of those pieces of junk can get you an extra 15c from a vendor. Even if you determined that they would, you still have to make a round trip to get back to a vendor and then return to farming, which is another 5 min wasted.
IMO there’s no excuse for being too lazy to set a real price on an item, and it brings the overall price down because 100s of players simply list at the current lowest sell price making it impossible for someone who actually wants to make money to sell the items to other players because you get more money from a vendor.
No matter how busy I am, I refuse to throw money away.
The point is that you are throwing away more money by adhering to ideology than by simply doing what is efficient. Those other players aren’t using an “excuse”, they are making more money than you, period, because they understand opportunity cost and you do not. Now if you are doing it out of principle with the understanding that it is costing you money to do it, then more power to you, but other people should not be forced to lose money just because you want to bring everyone down to your level of efficiency.
You are also assuming the mentality of farming hour upon hour.
I will admit that I am more of a casual player, as are many players of this game. Therefore, the “kill a deer a day mentality” applies to many people, not just you, or the elitest farmers that you allude to.
Quite often, there is only time for one farming event such as dungeons, fracs, whatever. 5 or less minutes to check prices is not the same as running those events all over again considering day to day time restraints.
I’d also venture a guess that some people are just clicking the easy match buyer sell and get the coin now option because they don’t want to fool with the tp. Efficiency has nothing to do with it.
And finally, about the last half your last sentence, how would making it impossible to sell below vender including seller fee bring down efficiency? The sell cap would simply include seller fee for the minimum pay out. It’d be the same as vendoring. That cap is technically there already, it just doesn’t include seller fee at that minimum level. There’s no efficiency loss if seller fee is included. Everyone would be happy then. To both elitest farmers and copper pinchers, it’s a win/win.
(edited by Lonewolf Kai.3682)
Uhm, in a way it does. For example when your inventory is full and you need room to pick up new items and there is no vendor near the place you are.
It’s still annoying and very inconvenient because you end up having to check your prices with everything you sell.
If your inventory is full, that’s your own fault for not making sure it has space to begin with. There’s many options to prevent that.
The only thing currently pointing to higher tier nodes in my opinion is the fact that ascended gear will be craftable. At least that’s my assumption based on it being available in the crafting window.
Of course that’s weak evidence – it’s likely materials would come in other forms than mined nodes.
Is that a fact now? I missed the upcoming update notes for that somewhere.
Agree on the second point though. I highly doubt they will introduce new tiered materials for ascended gear. They’ll throw in something like frac relics (/em shudders) or laurels.
Oh, and that “Yes” post was sarcasm to the quoted useless post.
What I find annoying is that there’s several items that have buy orders that are technically below vendor because of the fee on selling it! I end up actually losing money to sell to them rather than vendoring it. That makes no sense at all.
I’m a Charr guardian and I’ll go ahead and tell you that the GS animations are terrible! I even made a complaint thread in the Charr forum about it.
(edited by Lonewolf Kai.3682)
Well its definately agreeable that ascended stuff should be obtainable by measures other than spamming the fractals. I love that they introduced the ability to get them from Laurels.
I am one that just hates fractals.
Now, if only an infused backpiece can be obtained without the fracs…..

I’ll be surprised if there ARE new tiers of metal. I’d much rather they produced new 1-80 campaigns than bump the level cap.
No
Yes
“I can haz azended!?”
Seriously though, wouldn’t that be like a pay to win situation? I doubt they’ll do that.
If we could get a statement, one way or another, as to wether or not this will ALWAYS work on any mining node it would be great.
Hmm, unless i’m missing something, they haven’t said anything about a higher type of materials ever being introduced. So the worry that something is always going to work seems a bit misplaced.
Since they’ve talked about one day increasing the level cap, the odds of getting higher level nodes is more likely than not. Regardless of the level cap, I would imagine harder zones, such as the ring of fire, would have something above orichalcum level. They could even decide that ascended gear should be craftable and add special nodes requiring “ascended” tools.
If the pick was intended to be usable forever, they would probably be advertising it as such, since it would sell more. By leaving it unclear, those that hope it will last forever will buy it, whereas if they directly said it wouldn’t, some of those people would no longer want it.
Let’s look at it like this: the pickaxe will be just like the legendaries. They upgrade along with new tiers, such as it is with ascended and legendary weapons. You’ll also have those limited-time-only pickaxes that are upgraded with the new ascended tools.
Either way, they are both speculation. My thinking is that they will be upgraded since it is a very limited item.
(edited by Lonewolf Kai.3682)
^ exactly.
IMO, they need to at least make them permanent now or something and change the traits that add to their duration to either damage addition or life addition.
Hate to be a Negative Nancy, but there’s nothing new here. It’s a pretty common build.
Just for fun I went through the book Edge of Destiny and picked out all the moves that Logan Thackeray did in combat.
- Dodges…a lot
- Covers hammer in blue aura and slams ground, pushing back Rytlock (maybe a concecration?)
- Off hands a sword from time to time when dueling with his brother or when he uses his brothers sword later
1. That is hilarious!
2. Would be pretty cool to be able to put any weapon in a flamey blue aura before striking, maybe a skill or something.
3. Oh that would be great if a guardian can do that!
I’m an old DAoC player myself! Used to play as an Infiltrator on the Lancelot server. Man I miss playing that game!
Anyways, take a look at the Paragon build for a good solo’ing build. Also, take a look at the AH crit guide stickied at the top of this forum.
I’ve noticed you took a liking to the conditions gear. Normally I’d advise against it since Guardians don’t pour out conditions like other classes do, and they also are limited to just one type of condition: burning. Regardless, check out the Burning is viable thread. There’s a lot of good info there on that.
Info on Burning condition builds:
Obtena has some burning builds in his signature:

The 1st and last post has good info on the burning build:

Finally, check out Silven’s PVP build guide. Some awesome info there on multiple builds as well:

Let’s not take this into the forbidden religion zone, and yes, the theory of evolution could easily be construed as a religion before you go that route.
It was a joke people. That’s all there is to it.
Don’t forget the Consecration skills. But, yeah, you want to be able to push out boons so it would be best to go with at least one skill that does this. You can also trait at least 5 in virtues to get some boons out of activating your virtues as well.
I would suggest looking at the history of GW1 rare skins for clues to trends.
(edited by Lonewolf Kai.3682)
You’re main kiting weapon will be the scepter. Simple as that. You could also use staff to an extent as well.
Make sure to read the stickied Altruistic Healing and Hammer guide at the top, and also be sure to check out the Paragon build by Harbinger.
IMO, those are better builds in learning the class.
Also, keep in mind that if you do a boon duration build, you do give up some stats for the duration stats.
no way they’ll be worth that much once he starts selling them.
I bet ppl said the same thing about the Greatsaw skin. I know I did. Boy was that a mistake!
“Save Yourselves!”
I
2. This means that there will be opportunities again in the future for people to farm the current Super skins again,
I beg to speculate slightly differently: I’m thinking that the current super skins will go away with the next installment of levels in favor of the new skins. Afterall, there were quite a few different weapons that didn’t get skins. With each update, those skins will also go away in favor of new skins.
To that end, I’m also willing to bet when the SAB has finally finished all levels, all skins will then be re-released.
Look for the builds by Amins, Bash, and Brutality. They are your zerker masters. Do as their bidding commands!

Twilight, Bolt, Anomaly, 9 Cultural t3 sets, 20 different Trinketsetups, 3000g in ectos, 800g in other stuff and 11g on the bank :-).
Working on two incinerators simultaneously from zero on. Making gold is so easy in GW2.
I guess I spent around 10.000g so far.
!!!
Someone has a lot of disposable RL income.
Either that or a LOT of free time.
Halcyon nailed the head so to speak.
At least make a variance to the Guardian GS auto (like the Ranger auto), and either #2 or #5.
Thanks for the input everyone. I’ve decided to go with the Prec.
Some great points in this discussion, and I applaud everyone that contributed to it.
i want to get to 3k armor and 3k defense
ummm……what?
Looks like I’m the one that’s a weirdo here:
I use the arrow keys for my movement, including dodge (double tap), mouse for camera moving and targeting, and the numeric keypad next to the arrow keys for my skills. Jump is on the PageDown key. Numberic keypad Enter for weapon swap. Numlock, / *, and – above the numeric keypad for the class skills (default of F1-F4).
I used to run my extra mouse buttons for the class skills, but found using the keys above the numeric keypad better.

Generally speaking, giving up power is a no-no. A better way to look at your situation is to see how much vit/tough you’re willing to give up for more offense.
No can do. Vit/tough are exactly where I want them. no more, and definately no less.
What I don’t understand is that the model is just a copy of the two models. It doesn’t even look combined. The blade I can understand, since it would be a day/night thing, but the hilt? Come on, that’s just pure laziness on design. At least make it a combined hilt.
Hop on gw2buildcraft and input both setups;
compare the outcomes. My input: go with more precision. ~40% is the sweetspot for Guards from my experience. Have you tried food too?
Thanks for the input nonetheless:
Lonewolf Kai.3682:
I’ve been using the gw2buildcraft calc for awhile now. Actually been using it since it was released. Awesome tool too btw!
Yes, food and tools are factored into my build. I also agree about having +40%.
