NPCs should be tougher

Seeing areas full of dead only NPCs makes me sad, and looks kind of silly. They should respawn after a while if not resurrected by a player, and I second the idea that they should get a chance to win an event, maybe scaling their power level according to the number of players involved starting with “none”, to avoid them being too powerful leading to the situation where even the least amount of help provided by a player would be enough to clear the event. As it is now, “friendly” factions NPCs look like the weakest being in all Tyria.

That being said, I think it’s unrealistic to expect an overhaul to dynamic event system to actually make possible for NPCs to win the fight, or to NPCs combat skills in general.

I hate every time a guardian strikes virtue of justice the Legendary Archdiviner gets covered in blue/yellow flames and lights up like a Christmas tree to the point you can’t even see his limbs, so I can’t dodge melee range and get one shot.

I like scarlet and i like LS so if u dont like it go and play another game.I dont see what is problem to not play something u dont like, not like any1 force you.LS is something new and fresh in MMO games and they have my support in this.

In a matter of fact I DON’T play LS. That doesn’t mean I shouldn’t play the game. And the fact that you love LS doesn’t mean I shouldn’t voice my disappointment about having such plots plaguing my favorite game.

I can’t understand how anybody could say they enjoy LS plot. Its characters just pop out of nowhere and are completely random. Take Kasmeer. She pops out as a random Bikini Babe sunbathing with Lord Faren, then it turns out she is actually a major character in the LS. I think the fact that we have a Barbie that claims her dress is an illusion and she hangs around nude as a major character says a lot about LS quality.

I think the quick trailer resuming living story does a good job at underlining how bad the plot is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLACdViok5I

Dredge&Evil Charr Lava alliance attacks!
Electric Pirates attack!
Phyrexia attacks!
Oh wait, they were actually all led by a random Sylvari named Scarlet! (at this point you’re like WTF it makes no sense)
Krait&Evil Sylvari Poison alliance attacks! Also let by that random Sylvari!

Yeah, what’s next? Centaurs&Evil Asuras Grass Alliance? Skritts&Hyleks Dark Alliance? Grawls&Bandits Ice Alliance? Jotuns&Ghosts of Ascalon Earth Alliance?

The only LS part I liked was the first Karka attack, where an ancient and unspoken race awakes.

But the karka event had no backstory and came out of nowhere. What you’re really saying is you like big scary monsters that come out of nowhere and have no lore or backstory, but the second it’s a humanoid that’s normal sized, well, that’s just not good enough.

As usual, you like to read whatever you feel in other people posts or you’re straight unable to understand what they say, despite your self proclaimed genious-like intelligence. Did I complain about lack of backstory about events? No. I complained about random characters popping out of nowhere to lead the events. But maybe you enjoy being lead by the first random bikini girl you meet ingame. I am a Lovecraft fan so I enjoyed the “dread ancient race that comes from the deep of ocean to destroy the world” themed expansion. I could also do with smaller things, as long as they aren’t a silly mashup of two random races and a pokèmon type. But maybe you do like kindergarten enemies and colorful and random mismatches.

[PvP][WvW] Thief shadow embrace OP

in Profession Balance

Lucky Shot.7650

I don’t know but seeing this OP & comparing thief’s traits with my ranger’s traits – the only condition removal from traits is empathic bond on 10 sec cd & requires to have your pet alive (which is not very possible in wvw) & also requires to invest 30 points in the trait line to get it.

so comparing empathic bond to this thief’s 10 point trait i think there must be something really really really wrong with the profession balance….

Yes there is: ranger is a trash profession, with trash traits, trash class mechanic, traits that should be included in the class itself (Opening Strike) and shouldn’t require you to spec for them and utility skills (Guard, Protect Me, Search and Rescue) that should be F skills, since they control your pet, instead of requiring you to use slot skills. Also you’re talking about the class with least condition removal so it’s not like it should be taken as an example to balance other classes. Ranger should get some serious buffs, not the other way around.

Why: We know that Chill causes 66% movement and cooldown speed reduction, which is pretty powerful. However, Thieves don’t have cool downs on their weapons because of Initiative, so doesn’t this give their weapon skills immunity to that part of the condition?
Suggestion: They should get some sort of penalty instead, like a reduction on Initiative gain.

What: Shadow Embrace
Why: The thief can remove 2 conditions each time he goes in stealth, if and only if at least 10 points are spend in shadow arts. This means that a thief can remove 2 conditions every 3-4 seconds since they are constantly in stealth. Thieves have access to: (A.) Infiltrator strike on the sword #2 skill, which allows the thief to remove any condition any time he wants. (B.) Hide in shadows (the healing skill) that removes burning poison and bleeding (and 2 more condition because they have shadow embrace treated.) (C.) Shadow step which removes 3 condition and 3 more condition removed when shadow return is activated. (D.) Shadow refuge which can remove up to 6 condition (because they can last in stealth for 15 seconds which means that one condition is removed upon entering stealth + 5 conditions removed in the 15 seconds of stealth). By just spending 10 points in survival, the thief can have access to an incredible survival build. Keep in mind the following: (A.) Shadow step will also break stunts TWICE. (B.) Infiltrator strike will return to original place confusing the attacker, if you are immobilized, just use infiltrators return so your attacker cannot get to you. (C.) Shadow refuge 15 seconds of WTF where Is the thief. (the condition removal skills recharging, him gaining initiative/health). Now the thief can use the remaining 60 points to make a powerful damage build.
Suggestion: If the thief wants to have a survival build, then change the shadow embrace trait to grand master. That will force them to spend 30 points in survival.

Will Thieves lose more than 10% dps?

Developers said that builds that heavily invest in critical damage will have their damage reduced by 10%. I supposed they were talking about overall damage unless they said the reduction was exclusive to critical damage and I missed it.

Now, what do they mean by heavily critical reliant builds? 50, 60% critical chance? I doubt they base their calculations on 100% citical chance since it’s unrealistic that casuals reach such a high rate.

Let’s say they base their calculations on a 50% critical chance build, like 25 Arms Warrior with full Berserker equip and no other buffs.

They nerf said build by a 10% overall damage reduction, with a change that only affects the critical hitting part of his damage output, so won’t a build that has a higher than 50% critical hit chance have it’s damage reduced even more?

My point is, in this case, that a build like thief D/P with Hidden Killer that only hits for critical backstabs will have it’s damage output reduced by far more than 10%. Won’t a 15%-20% damage reduction on said build outright kill it? And isn’t that the most popular build for thieves roaming WvW?

Not being sarcastic or bashing anything… but the positive changes are probably:
Arbitrary trap buffs.
And most definitely arbitrary venom buffs.
A possible buff to Hard to Catch, reducing it’s internal CD.

I agree, thieves can expect some MASSSIVE buffs like those you posted. Also, they will probably lower Last Refuge cooldown to make it a lot better.

Also get ready to have Pistol Whip split in two, the first one costing 2 initiative and the second one costing 3. Then have the second part of the skill cost 4. Then have the second part of the skill deal 10% less damage. Then have the first part of the skill cost 3 because a 2 ini stun is too much.

On a side note, how in the world will you land the second part if you choose to not use it immediately after the first part? And you’ll be locked out of the stun for about 5 seconds… that will prevent you to land an actual pistol whip.

Sigils for phantasm build

Posted by: Lucky Shot.7650

Lucky Shot.7650

Hi everybody! I’m finally about to reach 80 on my mesmer and I already decided to go for a phantasm build after reading Chaos Archangel’s mesmer guide since he says it’s recommended for mesmer beginners and dungeon running.

I have no idea what sigils should I put on weapons. I know that on critical sigils don’t work on phantasms attacks since I’ve been experimenting in pvp for a while. I also read permanent bonus sigils don’t work either. Nevertheless, I’m very tempted on Superior Sigil of Fire since I will have very little aoe.

Considering I’ll run with Sword+Focus/pistol and Scepter+Sword/Greatsword, I was thinking to put sigil of fire on sword due to it’s fast attack rate even if it doesn’t affect phantasms. I’d also like to have Superior Sigil of bloodlust and I think it would be better to put it on Focus/Pistol since most of the time I’ll be using the first set. I’m about as clueless as I can get about sigils for other weapons.

What do you suggest, considering I’ll run dungeons most of the time and occasionally WvW?

Lucky Shot.7650

When I first heard about stealth in GW2 (I think it was long before Beta) it sounded more like this:

When you’re hit in stealth, you will be revealed for a short amount of time. Dots will reveal the stealthed character as long as he takes damage from it.

Wouldn’t this be a more interesting stealth-mechanic and more fun to 90% of the playerbase? What do you think?

Of course, since I think something like 11% of the playerbase plays thief (think I read it somewhere in thief forum) the remaining 89% will have a lot more fun getting free kills! Flawless logic.

On a sidenote, since the thread derailed on the stealth OP argument, I mained thief for more than 800 hours and played mostly wvw and pvp. I used to play d/d signet burst and d/p 0/30/30/10/0. Then I started to level other classes because I was getting sick of having Last Refuge kill me and because I had to run from every spec that invested in a durability just a little more tough than thin paper. I now have 6 80’s, all classes but elementalist and mesmer (which I used to effortlessly farm glory in pvp when phantasm build was at its prime).

Stealth was so over powered that I quit the class when I realized how weak my thief was compared to my necro/guardian/engineer in wvw and mesmer in pvp. I feel thief is only good for disengaging and kill unexperienced/upleveled players and aside from that is a useless class along with ranger, that is a total mess of a class. Now the only use I have for my thief is standing next to a place of power loaded with quartz.

All of the above is of course just my opinion, and I personally hope they will nerf thief even further to the point it will be completely useless so they may start to think about a total makeover of the class, even though I suspect they won’t be bothered with serious class changes since, for instance, necromancers are asking for a Death Shroud overhaul since forever and DS just got one more skill that was totally unrelated to its issues… and Last Refuge still claims its victims. But hey, enjoy your two weekly checklists “push F in front of X item X times”: you can clear them with any class and any spec!

The weakness reduction was the biggest hit to it imo. Now it runs out before they can even walk a few steps to land the hit, so it might as well not even be there. I’m not saying the loss of the bleeds isnt detrimental to it, but bleeds can be reapplied easy enough. You only get one 2 second shot at trying to negate that burst on you now though with the non-existant weakness.

I agree and the loss of weakness is the reason why I don’t trait it anymore. Even if they let 2 bleed stacks 10 secs, what would be the point to enter DS, since you could stack those bleeds without losing Life Force with AAs? Meanwhile, before the nerf you could stack bleeds, absorb damage through Life Force and still have damage mitigation once you left DS.

I won’t build a power necro. I have 6 80 and geared classes, and I already have 3 power specced characters. I raised a necromancer specifically because I wanted a condition aoe class, I have no interest for another power spec…

Since the nerf to Weakening Shroud...

Posted by: Lucky Shot.7650

Lucky Shot.7650

Since they nerfed Weakening Shroud I find myself rarely entering DS. A condition build loses a lot of bleed stacks when entering DS, Weakening Shroud made up for it by inflicting 2 (4) bleed stacks, so I used to stack 2 (4) + 3 (5) when entering DS, casting Dark Path and some extra stack when my life force wasn’t full with Life Transfer crits.

So DS was sort of included in my rotation, it was like stack some conditions, enter DS, stack some more while mitigating damage, exit and stack more and so on. It was a fun play style, to the point I used to assign 20 points to Soul Reaping.

Now I actually feel discouraged to use it since I don’t trait Weakening Shroud anymore so by entering DS I would lose a lot of my damage. DS became just a “oh crap” button for me, I use it only when I’m low heath in the hope my cooldowns will be over before my life force is or when I need to interrupt, but for the whole time I’m in DS I’m doing close to 0 damage and I’m just waiting there since I don’t have anything to do while in DS.

Consequently, playing Necromancer became less and less fun for me and I find myself rarely logging the character that had basically become my main. Anyone else?

Not with Last Refuge. Remember it’s that minor trait that automagically puts you in stealth a split second before your c&d hits. Would be a buff if they increased the cooldown to, say, 30 minutes.

Does it put you in stealth? Really?

Thief Initiative vs Cd's

in Thief

Posted by: Lucky Shot.7650

Lucky Shot.7650

The thing I disliked the most about initiative are situational skills. With any class but thief, a skill you would use only in a particular situation, that you never use in your standard rotation, is always ready and its use won’t prevent you from using other skills. The skill is there, waiting to be cast should the need arise, meanwhile with thief you need initiative left from your rotations.

For example, let’s say I absolutely need to interrupt an enemy.

I have a D/P thief that is using his initiative to stealth and backstab. You need to interrupt an an enemy so you have two outcomes:
- You have enough initiative, so you successfully interrupt your target. You still get penalized in your offensive, or other defensive maneuvers.
- You don’t have enough initiative, you can’t interrupt.

Then I have a warrior with Axe/Shield that deals damage with axe AA and 2. He will always have Shield Bash ready to interrupt if needed. Or rifle, dealing damage with volley and kill shot, will always have 5 ready. Or necro with staff, dealing damage with 2-3 marks and s/d, will always have staff 5 ready. Or a guardian wielding hammer that attacks with AA and 2.

Sure, you can’t interrupt twice in a row with other classes… but can you with thief? Or use twice any other situational skill? Assuming you’re full initiative, which is totally unrealistic but still, you can cast headshot twice (or even trice) but then you are basically an AA bot (you know opportunist could help in this situation…).

Also, due to the spammable nature of our skills (or better your skills now), I feel the skills themselves are inherently weaker. You really can’t have a resource based class going around spamming hundred blades, volley, mighty blow and so on, so we’re left with generally weaker skills that are weakened further with any nerf we (you) get.

I played 6 classes and I feel thief is the most stiff. With other classes you are actually encouraged to use all your weapon skills, with thief you are penalized for it. Other classes are smoother and I rarely felt the need to repeat a skill twice in a row without being able to do so like “gee, I’d really like to have this skill off cooldown now” except the heals maybe.

TL, DR: Thieves don’t always have situatonal skills ready and even if they do their ability to keep going with their normal rotation/defensive maneuvers will be compromised after the cast.

S/D seems a very weak set for leveling, sure I can blast trash mobs with fire and earth might stacking combo, but as soon as I meet a veteran I’m in trouble, I usually resort to water and earth to kite and heal. I still find S/D air useless, damage is too low to be useful: keep in mind I’m used to main thief so I find air pretty weak for dealing single target damage compared to backstabs.

I’m thinking about switching to D/D right now, at least for leveling.

Yes you are missing something.
The scepter/dagger combo is quite powerful with some condition damage gear.
My leveling build is s/d with water, air, fire, earth signets and FG.
An example PvE encounter without preparation would go something like this:
Open with DT
Ring of fire,
Switch to earth
Auto attack as long as the fire field is up,
Earth 2, for the extra armor and a later dps burst
Auto attack till burning is about to expire.
Pop fire signet to maintain burning.
Use earth three and air signet for blinds to reduce damage
Rinse repeat.

My build is fire, earth, arcane.

Got it, elementalist’s scepter is a condition weapon much like necromancer’s scepter. That being said, I’m amazed about the might stacking of S/D and the sheer damage of Phoenix and Dragon’s Tooth so I was hoping for it to be a weapon effective in both power and conditions.

Thanks to the fact that burning requires little investment into condition damage to hurt a lot, I was thinking about going for a “Jack of all Trades” kind of build since this weapon set has almost everything: conditions (burning and bleeding), damage mitigation (blinds, control, protection, extra armor) and heals. I have every class but Mesmer min/maxed so I was hoping to be able to build something different, even if not powerful as other specs. Would S/D be an effective choice for a build like that, designed to do a little of everything albeit with less kick?

This is the build I was thinking to get once I reach 80: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fEEQJArYhImkbxR4gjFAEFm4SowBjCdIKURRxM6A-jACBoeBEbEhoGgEJhJfFRjtqpIasqaER1qkYA-e

Of course it won’t be as powerful as more specialized builds but as I already said, I don’t have any interest in another min/max build. As long as I can pve and dungeon with it I’m happy!

Scepter Autoattacks

I’m still leveling up my Elementalist so I may be wrong, but I’m under the impression that all scepter autoattacks are pretty bad power-wise, except maybe water.

I mean, what if I want to use fire as my primary power damage dealing attunement? As soon as I cast Dragon’s Tooth, Ring of Fire, Phoenix and Fire Grab I’m stuck with Flame Strike which is pretty bad from a power damage point of view, so it’s not really an advantage to invest in Ember’s Might since I’d be switching to something else.

Arc Lightning seems equally bad, I’ve seen Skales regenerating more health than I could take away with this attack. Fortunately, Lightning strike makes up for it since you can cast it during the channel of the autoattack.

Ice Shards seems the only autoattack to actually deal some damage.

Am I missing something?

Kicking in fractals

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

It’s been a long time since I ran fractals and yesterday, since I need a back item for my engineer and since the monthly has fractals, I decided to go back to fractals.

Being my personal level 26 I didn’t care much about going further since I don’t like fractal weapons and I’m just interested in relics and pristine relics, so I decided to join a lvl 20 daily.

There were 3 guys from a french guild, a mesmer and me. The guild wanted to stack, so we stacked and the mesmer was pulling. At the third fractal, the underwater one, the mesmer got kicked without ANY warning and for reasons I couldn’t understand, I assume he took too long to pull a group of kraits just at the beginning of the dungeon. Then a engineer joined, and one of the guildies said in party chat “be careful, easy kick for you too”.

Today I pick a lfg for level 20 daily. No guilds this time. We run flawlessly until the third fractal, we get the one with the hammer and Mr. Manhattan. At the last two seals, 3 guys stack in a corner and don’t do anything to progress. So the fourth guy takes the hammer and starts killing in a room. I decide to follow him and help him. We hit the seals 3 times, killing mobs from only one room. Then he gets downed and dies while I try to rally him. We got both kicked in a blink of an eye and without any warning.

I find unacceptable how easily you could get kicked, and in fractals getting kicked is even worse since you could be losing a lot of time. I also find unacceptable threatening other people with the kick hammer.

And I couldn’t even report them: when you get kick, you can’t read party chat anymore to find their names and besides there isn’t an option for “abusive kicking”.

Is that common nowdays to get a kick in fractals for no reason at all?

Why is this acceptable?

I played thief for about 800 hours then quit it for Engineer but I can’t remember how much damage I was able to deal. I never thought it was op anyway or else I wouldn’t have quit thief. ;-)

I’m just asking.

Why is this acceptable?

Is it even possible to crit backstab for 11000+ against a 3000+ armor target, with 15 stacks of might, maybe 25 bloodlust and Assassin’s Signet?

It’s been a lifetime since I played 25/30/0/0/15 thief, and I clearly remember having to run against every bunker spec. That’s why I switched to 0/30/30/10/0. And then to Engineer.
