I use staff, and scepter/gun combo for my Norn Mesmer. Is that odd?
Part 1/2 of a dynamic duo
My partner and I are on a non-full server (high population at the most). There are people around all the time. New people during the holiday of course, but it was like this even before the holidays.
I noticed that if someone asks for help and linking way points at the same time, droves of people show up to help out. If there’s a big meta even going on, people will show up after the fight, but will show up.
I have a hard time finding things to solo, someone always come along to help We may have just lucked out on this wonderful little server :P

Disclaimer: all my characters are in their mid 40’s or below. I’m a veteran GW 1 player, and very much entirely a PVE player. I am still learning as I go.
I gave the Charr Mesmer a try and promptly deleted her… the Charr, they just don’t look good (to me).
My Mesmer vs Guardian (both Norn, I like Norns)
My Mesmer went from newly created to lvl 40 in two days
My Guardian, on the other hand is still lvl 20, and I’ve been with her for a week now
Me, I’m a ranged player. When I play a guardian, I fall into a habit of playing her like a protection Monk back in the days. When I realized the staff and wand wasn’t doing enough damage to the enemies, I switched to great sword and wand/torch. I can deal damage now, but due to the fact that I’m a ranged player, I constantly forget to have to get close to the enemy. To me, the learning curve for the guardian is huge because it isn’t my play style. I have to learn the profession and how to fight in melee range.
I am also a wanderer
The Mesmer comes with her very own 3 clone army to start with. I have been able to cheery pick my fights and have plenty of ways to escape when the fight gets tough. I find it useful to have something distracting the enemies while I take them apart. I was able to wander all over the world by myself.
You will have a learning curve regardless of the profession you choose. I suggest you pick a play style and try it out. Chances are, you will make new characters as you run out of storage room (so they can be used as “mules”). I have a lot of fun learning the mechanics of the different professions.
Welcome.

I would like a new gaming mouse! I have heard rumours of a Xmas gift on its way to me, so I’ll wait to find out what’s coming before I get myself the gift. The other thing I wanted is a vaporizer…

You can’t move’em around, and good luck with your refund. I for one have gotten over this issue the second I won my very first fight.

As a pve mesmer I just want to be left alone from pvp and wvwvw changes.
It’s annoying. Please split more skills for pve and pvp.
Thanks.
Yes this! Leave my Mesmer alone in PVE!
Part 1/2 of a dynamic duo
If I’m not in a battle, and there isn’t any immediate threat to me then I’ll spend all the time I need to rez until everyone is up.
However, if we’re in a battle, and you’re dead (flat lined and have no chance of rally) and are in the middle of the danger zone where I can die rezing you, then, you’ll either have to rally to a way point and run back to the battle or you wait there until we’re done with the battle.
If an ally is downed and trying to rally, I always help. Either by pulling the mob of enemies away from them so they can rally in safety, by protecting their rescuers, or I’ll rez right there while others draw the heat away.
I admit, I purposefully skip over those who have flat lined at the centre of a mob or right under the boss and expect everyone just rush in, rez them so they can die a second later with all their rescuers. These players are few and far in between. The way I spot them is usually because I’ve rezed them in those situations before, and they died a second later usually leaving the boss or whoever they were fighting on top of me… I’ll rez, but it will be at the end of the battle.
If I have gone flat lined in the middle of a fight, I don’t linger, I rally to a way point right away so no one needs to contemplate if they should rez me.

I’m on Eredon Terrace, and I can attest to the fact that there are always people around the starting and other lower level areas.
Part 1/2 of a dynamic duo
I want to throw my two cents in here.
I started a Mesmer one day and before I could blink, she was 35+. This was over the course of a weekend binge. My partner’s Mesmer is currently about mid 10’s and he started it yesterday. He had a blast leveling the little guy, and he was all alone. He’s not the most skilled when it comes to moving around the battle field, and even then, I hardly see him go down.
I use a staff/sceptre-gun combo. My staff gives me the first two illusions, a storm to protect them with. My gun gives me the last one of the opening set. I shatter them after the duellist un-loaded her first burst. By this time the storm should be ready again.
The sceptre gives me a steady stream of illusions when I feel lazy, or simply forget to switch weapons.
My utility skill bar can produce a set of 3 illusions at the drop of the hat, but those refreshes much slower than my weapon skills. I use those as escape routes. Drop all three illusions and blink away! I seem to be able to break any aggro this way and save myself some trouble when the fight gets too tough.
Like many has said, I do keep moving when I’m in a fight. I don’t ever stay put unless I have to (rezing ppl). I switch weapons as much as possible when I need to.

Shoud we leave it on the retrying screen or close it and try again later please?
I am wondering the same thing. An official answer would be nice.
Edit:
I left it on at the retrying screen, and it eventually resumed. Even though on one of my computers it was cutting in and out for a bit, but looks like both of my machines are downloading fine now.

In the game options, you can turn on all player names and turn off NPC names. I have all player and enemy names displayed, players in light blue(ish) colour, and enemy shows up in red (yellow/white if none hostile).
This way, if a toon doesn’t have its name displayed on its head, then its a NPC and not a human.

Don’t get 100% World Completion if you are a Mesmer.
Currently the completion star does not show up on your clones making you an easier target.
Thank you for this explanation! Someone told me in a different thread about the star not showing up on my clones, but I never really understood why that was important. Thanks!

When I remember I needed to eat food, it’s usually at the END of a fight… Out of sight, out of mind. When the food is in my inventory, it’s hard to remember to eat it before heading into a fight.
Part 1/2 of a dynamic duo
I don’t mind skimpy outfits. What I don’t like are over designed armours. Some armours have a very nice simple design and are very tight fitting thus showing off the curves. I don’t mind showing off her curves or even any skin, but when I’m running around the far Shiverpeaks, it just doesn’t look right if she’s not all bundled up like a polar bear. When I’m running around other parts that doesn’t look like it’s 40 below, I like seeing my toon in sexy outfits, and I’m a woman.

My partner seems to think it has to be roll first (ever so slightly) then jump. He’s got it down. You should see it when he’s got a few ppl around him and they all trying to do that jump roll, all hopping up and down like the Gwalks at the same time. Pretty funny.

Take a look at this post:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OMG-If-you-only-knew-this-tips-for-new-players
Lots of great tips in there.
My personal tips to you:
Play the game how you feel you like to play it. Don’t rush, explore everything
Try as many professions as you can, and then pick the one that suites your playing style the best.
All professions has a something to offer in terms of team support/heal.
Be polite and you won’t have too much trouble with anyone in the game

Don’t finish 100% map completion if you are a Mesmer.
why?
Part 1/2 of a dynamic duo
How the hell can it bother anyone ? it’s a little blue icon barely noticable :S
If I had commander title and someone moaned about me using it in PvE i’d pretty much verbally abuse him till I get banned. I do what I want, if I was stupid enough to spend 100g on it, then I can use it however the kitten I like, if it bothers you then it’s you’re problem. That’s like me saying I don’t like your gear please remove it thanks. And no I don’t have the title never even thought of getting it.
merrrrr
I agree with you on the “it’s my money and title and I’ll do what I want with it”.
However, I also want to ONLY see what I want to see on MY OWN kitten mini map. The commanders can choose what they want to do, but give the rest of us a chance to turn it off on OUR OWN maps, please. I don’t think anyone would get into a fit if individual players can choose to turn off that icon in the first place.

I like to have the option of zooming way in as well as zooming way out. I get motion sickness from full first person views. When playing games such as the Ellder Scrolls, I always zoom out for combat. I only zoom into first person view when I need to manipulate items in the game that requires a lot of precision.
Options are always good

I like the monk idea too with knuckles or a couple of batons and some classy outfits, close combat fighter…
Pic stolen from eq2
That reminded me of the monks in NWN. No armour, no weapon, close combat fighters.
http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Monk
It would be interesting. I think the idea is not to have a “Medic” class, but something like a Shao Lin Monk that is good with martial arts. I want them to be able to use “staff” to hit ppl in melee.
Part 1/2 of a dynamic duo
I noticed a good percentage of my loots are lvl appropriate for my toon. They are not the best stuff, but sometimes they aren’t bad. I don’t think I have gotten anything over my toon’s level if I’m in a lower level area. This is only my own observation though.

Leave my portal alone! I have gotten my partner out of rocks and trees with it. I like that skill
Part 1/2 of a dynamic duo
In PVE, the commanders I’ve seen look like they are all “recruitment officers”. The only thing I’ve seen them yak about is to join their guild. I started to equate the commanders with spammers and never really pay attention to anything they chat about.
With that said, the commanders that never spam the map chat doesn’t bother me the least.
