Clarishy – Ranger
Tinkershy – Engineer
This is the single best idea on how to deal with grenades I have seen yet. Please do this.
Okay, so after pouring over the skill builder, and reading and re-reading these posts, would something like this be viable? The seemingly random trinkets are because this is the best I can do with my available cash and laurels.
It’s still condi, but has the EG for the heal, stun break, and poison. I dumped flamethrower (which I swapped around anyway) for the Tool Kit.
After loading up my traits like Vee Wee posted and playing with the bombs, there was a noticeable improvement in their viability for me.
Thoughts?
Thanks for the feedback so far! I am looking at these builds now.
I am not really attached to bomb/FT. I don’t really care if I have to change up everything at this point other than my pistol.
Actually, I find bombs to be an annoyance when they are delayed to explode and the target has already moved out of the radius. I see what Vee did there though, and that makes a lot more sense with those traits…
Everyone is using the healing turret. How do you guys get anything approaching an actual heal out of it before it is cleaved down? Is it a positioning thing?
I could understand not having the glow when you have your hobosack on, but the footfalls should still be present. I want confetti and flowers while I run even with my bombkit!
Because the tendons for your fingers are located on the underside of your wrist and repeatedly spamming the same keys over and over for extended periods and pulling those tendons causes what some people refer to as ‘pain’.
It’s poor design for extended play.
All,
I am going to just lay it all out here for you, and shelve my shame and shattered ego on this. I need help.
I have been playing since release, but bouncing between D/D Ele, Shatter Mes, and my Engy. A couple of months ago I decided to make my engineer my main and stripped down my other 80s of their gear and moved everything over. I have been playing nothing but my engineer since.
At first, I just assumed it was because I was out of practice or something, but I still cannot seem to win a 1v1 against any profession. None. I play mostly WvW with some SPVP thrown in. I read these forums. I try builds out every day. I change up my kits. I am really, really just not getting it.
Here is my current (as of this morning) and exact build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fdAQJAqelcTpAr1axPLseNCbhAyJXE9xqR/4hAA-TFSGwAAOBAJeAAEVidS9noKPorHY2+DSVCCA-w
I only roam in WvW normally, not just because that is my preference, but also because my server doesn’t have blobs or zergs.
I need help. I need build, armor, etc. advice, because clearly I am not doing it right.
Notes:
- I have Quip , so I am going to use Pistol outright. Sometimes I go P/P but usually P/S for the blocks. Actually, this is the only thing I am NOT willing to change.
- I frequently change out Flamethrower for Grenade Kit (and move the points from Juggernaut to Grenadier) as I move around in WvW, because ’nades > all when defending anything from a wall.
- I change Elixir C for Elixir Gun sometimes, but my server faces off against endless hordes of condi-spam thieves and warriors, and I struggle to keep the condition stacks off me.
Problems:
- Bomb Kit is amazing, and I love the damage. No one is dumb enough to stick around for it though, and chasing people leaving little bombs behind me is not working.
- Flamethrower at least hits decently on #2 Blast, but the damage is crap overall and I really only use it for that Blast and the #5 blind.
- Grenades are ever so much fun, but I am terrible, terrible, terrible at aiming them at the running players with their long flight times. Also.. MY FINGERS/WRIST.
- Healing: I want to like the healing turret, but it just doesn’t do enough healing before being cleaved down to justify using over the elixir. I think I am just doing it wrong. I drop it, then I hit it again to get the overcharge it, but before it has spun up the thing is destroyed leaving me with nothing but disappointment.
A Day In My Life:
- Thieves are effectively three or four-shotting me within seconds. By the time I switch to bomb kit and drop that #2 bomb, I am dead. Dodging prolongs the stealth => death timer, but the end-result is the same.
- Warriors hambow me down, and I can’t seem to break the stuns long enough to do anything. No stability.
- Guardians are pushing/pulling/holding me non-stop and around the time I get back off the ground I am getting slammed back into it or going for a nice flight. See: stability
Other Professions: Who are we kidding, there are no other Professions in WvW or SPVP hotjoin.
I have about 240gold to my name, and I will to blow it all if needed to rebuild for WvW roaming. Even in SPVP I am struggling though with the ‘day in my life’ issues I listed above, and that is supposed to be an even playing-field gear-wise. I have become so discouraged that I am debating quitting GW2 at this point.
What are my options here? Any advice is appreciated, and I am too humbled to argue with anyone.
Thanks
It would be amazing if it was a toggle thing though based on whether you have something specifically targetted. I can only use my grenade kit for short periods before my hand/wrist starts hurting. It works so well underwater too.
Sometimes you want to actively lob grenades at an area because you anticipate movement there, and I get that… but having it autoattack when you have something actually targeted would fundamentally change the way I play for the better.
My wife made hers the other day: Ballista Clockheart.
I still giggle over it in chat.
It’d be nice to dust off the FT for more than just bag tagging in WvW zergs again. The utility is nice. The damage boost to the wrench/prybar is welcome albeit confusing, as it already packed quite the wallop comparatively.
(edited by MeanCoffeeBean.2073)
They also said they were buffing flamethrower damage on 1, and that 2 will be a blast finisher now. Rocket turrets will have faster rockets that aim better.
edit: waylander beat me to it and has more info
Would it be possible for ANet to have someone address the long-standing animation issues with Asura Elementalists? Other professions have their animation quirks too, but it is very jarring with an Ele.
Examples:
Dagger Fire 1 – Using while moving (as one is always doing with D/D) has the lower torso remaining correct while the upper torso does a complete 270degree turn. The head jerks wildly.
Dagger Air 1 – The head jerks so hard down that my asura is effectively tonguing her bellybutton. Why is the head even doing this? This makes no sense. My human ele just whips her arms.
Dagger Fire 3 – The character kind of leaps in the air and then shoots forward leaving a burning trail. This sounds cool. The actual effect is very abrupt and clumsy, and actually makes the timing feel off. Why can’t they slide like every other race? One would think that sliding Asura would be trivial given that they are small.
I play almost entirely Asura because they are just perfect for me, and accept most of the animation silliness as part of the fun, but these animations could use some work if it is possible. It breaks the immersion.
I would love to be able to see my lovely ascended shield with the Super Adventure Box skin on it when actually using my engy… but no.
Hobosack.
Anecdotal Observation: I mostly see an ocean of (in order) Guards, Warriors, Thieves, then Mesmers in Bottom-tier WvW, where I live when I am playing. On the other hand, Eles, Rangers, and Engineers do not seem to be as well represented as a portion of the population at all.
To be fair, some of this is the difference between roamers and zerg/ktrain runners. The roamers almost always seem to be small groups of thieves/mesmers. The zergs are full of hammer/staff guards and hambow warriors.
It is honestly a surprise to me when I come across an opposing engineer, and I actually get excited to see how they play and what kits/turrets/utilities they use because it is so uncommon.
This could be a bottom-tier thing though.

You want the fury on aura.
Go forth, brave elementalist!
Ehmry is hot, wet, and waiting for you! $1.99 for the first minute, $0.49 per minute afterward. Applicable charges may apply. Not liable for strained marriages, incredible skirmishes, golem rushes on your keep, or wanton women throwing themselves at you.
Also: Thanks Lucey. We were locked in the tier with you guys for ages, and had some great fights.
Columbo is pretty much right on with this. It is unfortunate though, because it would have been nice to get some love before the season started.
Kaaos is correct and speaks with the manliest of voices for all of Ehmry Bay.
Dear [Every Plummeting Server],
We know those feels.
Love,
Ehmry Bay
Here is my standard PVE set. Trickster with the Mask of the Wanderer.

Illumination looks good on it, but I had to change it up after using it for a couple of months. Variety and stuffs.
As an EBay WvW regular, the only benefit it gives, and the one that makes be happy every single day (because we are outnumbered every single day), is that we pay no repair costs no matter how we die. It makes WvW actually fun because there is no penalty for death.
It doesn’t actually make up for the fact that certain servers have been seeing continual losses since the end of the last season as whole guilds bandwagon their kitten right on over to the big servers.. but it helps take some of the sting out of it.
I know going into WvW that I am going to die. At least I don’t have to lose money doing it.
Also, when you are debating trying to take that supply camp back, and no one else is on the map to help you, knowing you can go for it even though you’re likely to get rolled by the Vet CC and ogres/dredge/hyleks is kind of nice.
I just came to this forum to say something similar. I can’t stand this anymore. I just keep trying and failing on this stupid marionette. It’s complete crap.
What is the rationale of letting the failure of a small group of people on a single platform ruin everything for 100+ ?
This is Tequatl all over again. The big servers kill the boss, the smaller ones are left to fight for scraps in the overflows because our main group fails time and time again. Why even have events like this?
Who is the intended audience?
It certainly is not the players that did the living story every step of the way to see the Scarlet story. I know because this LS content is locked behind the requirement of getting 100+ people to beat a fight that is won or lost on the backs of tiny groups.
Why?
It’s just a really poor decision on the part of the LS devs. Tequatl was a standalone event. Scarlet is not. You failed us.
Fuzzion is correct. Even if you know you can land another ring of fire or whatever by waiting 3 more seconds, it is better to switch attunements and roll through other abilities so you can keep your attunement boons and auras up.
This is the exact build/gear/etc. I use as a fairly recent D/D 80.
http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-k;4R0kU0-5sMkY0;9;499-JT3;00;328-17A4o0;0N;0V19cV9fgGBGSF6;1Vb-VAVFWKXP2V3a_-3-0N2s;0aN1;28;18ZJ
It’s focused on movement and using cantrips for boons on-demand. I’ll Lightning Flash to my target for three boons right from the start, then updraft => shocking aura => RTL => switch to earth => etc.
The cantrip focus is really about boon generation and survivability. The rest is just to support the rapid-fire switching and dodging that D/D demands.
The damage is admittedly lackluster. I am putting out numbers that seem to be on-par with my Sw/Sw Phantasm mesmer right now. Once I get better and don’t need the Tough/Vit as much to stay alive, I will move towards more Assassin’s and Beserker.
Not sure if it will help, but this is how my newbie kitten is coping.
Kasmeer. Because it’s awesome. Probably doesn’t fit your setup though.
Burnfall, I’ve seen you trolling other profession forums as well. Give it up.
All you do is complain about how every class is OP. I am sorry that Ranger did not get enough love in the last patch. I genuinely feel for you guys. Most of the good rangers I know are on alts now. It sucks. But seriously, stop trolling every other profession. If you are that upset, it might be a good time to step away from the game and get some perspective.
Your posting history says it all really.
Funniest thing and I almost forgot it. We were just talking in map chat today about not seeing an ele playing in WvW in our past 4 matchups. Then we saw a little upleveled ele and none of us could bring ourselves to kill him.
This might have been me… :/ Human uplevel with Trickster skin on the armor?
I am running a LOT of WvW right now trying to learn, level, and love my Ele after playing a Mesmer since shortly after release.
I ran by a few small 3-5 person groups last night near Stonemist that didn’t even bother to chase me. I wasn’t sure why. It’s definitely not because I am a threat.
I want to really learn this profession and get good at it.

This sums up my entire sPVP experience more succinctly and perfectly than any 1000 word post I could dream up. This is the actual terrible experience of every Skyhammer match boiled down to its purest essence. This is pure art.
all is vain
Yes. Yes it is.
As a shatter build, I find the signet heal to be completely and utterly useless. It wasn’t intended for me though. It’s pretty obvious they intended this one for open-world PVE phantasm builds. The cooldown is entirely too long for WvW regardless. I can’t even imagine using it in a >20 Fractal.
If it was a true passive regen without the need for clones then I would be singing its praises. But yeah, every shatter leaves me dead in the water and too scared to burn the heal and go for 35 seconds with no backup.
Traiting for it doesn’t fit my shatter build,.
I’ll give ANet credit for trying something, but I am not sure that catering to the already large phantasm crowd is going to do anything to bring lesser-used builds to the forefront.
Do you know what illusion of life is?
A mesmer used the skill while you were downed and it revived you.
The skill also downs you again if you fail to kill someone before its active effect expires.
This is correct. Working as intended.
I’m necro’ing this thread. This has happened to me repeatedly over the last couple of weeks. It seems like dying or mapping fixes it. It’s like the number keys just stop responding. The movement works fine, and anything letter-based still works, but anything numeric stops working. I thought it was me, but it has happened to multiple folks in my guild.
The final straw for me was when it happened during the middle of the dredge fractal. I couldn’t attack, heal, or do much of anything other than run in circles. For 15 minutes straight. Mapping is not an option when you are the fractal owner, and my voluntary death did not resolve it last night.
Seriously, is there anything that can be done to resolve this? It didn’t start until a few weeks ago, and has been getting steadily worse. I don’t believe it is lag. Everything letter-based works flawlessly. I have seen it on both my laptop and my desktop.
Don’t forget the egregious bugs on the Mai Trin fight that imposes double agony without warning or ports you right into cannon fire by the door from random spots around the room. Or the lack of waypoint and/or method of getting back into the reactor on character death. Or the death with no matching animation or hit on the spinning lightbars in the aetherblade terminal puzzle.
The new DPS requirements and incoming damage turned what used to be a sometimes frustrating but always fun and hilarious evening into hours of torture and final abandonment on the Mai Trin fight. My group wound up discussing the fact that levels are account-bound now and that we needed to give up our light and medium armor classes because the fractals are clearly only designed for warrior/guard groups.
I want to believe that this is growing pains and it will get better, but I don’t see ANet backtracking on this. We’ll get some bug fixes, but the push towards running all heavy armor groups has been obvious for some time. This last patch just sealed it.
I’d like to see a discussion on effective and sustainable clone generation with Sw/<something> for Shatter builds in PVE (Fracs).
I’ve been toying around with Shatter builds a bit, and I’m really having trouble generating clones continuously without blowing my endurance and leaving myself without that needed dodge for agony avoidance.
The standard 20/20/0/0/30 shatter build is what I am working from.
Also, what weapon do people find works well in PVE dungeons for range on fights where range is really crucial? The GS seems to be frowned upon, but the staff and scepter seem to both be so very “meh” in PVE.
I was aiming for catchy.
I assure you that the illuminati are not behind the post (as far as I know).
For the record, I do things like this in my work email too. Anything to break the droll monotony, right?
Mesmer main-hand pistol. Oh please, please, please!
When dual-wielding pistols give us the same barrage (with sound) that our phantasmal duelist has.
I will spend 2309842098492842390 gems for this.
Perfect example: I just got back from an evening out. The first thing I did was check the temple status. Not only is it not open on a single American server, but it is not open on a single European one either. Not that it matters much since you can’t guest to a different region, but it does help illustrate the point.
Orr is, in general, a very unpleasant place with high mob density and fast respawn rate. People know that going in. There is little sense in punishing them more than is necessary to set a basic difficulty bar.
I would still very much like to see the temple reviewed and the Skill Point and PoI brought into line with the other temples of Orr, so that they can be achieved by a skilled single player or a small group. That is not an unreasonable request, and does not break any game continuity nor feel like pandering. It’s asking for consistency. This is the only Skill Point that requires such a coordinated effort.
One simple answer to your question of why is this temple harder than the others : obsidian fragment.
I can totally understand that’s why the actual fight for the temple is so much harder, and it makes sense in that regard, but that is not what I am talking about at all. I am talking about getting the PoI and Skill Point from the Temple. Nothing more.
The other temples allow you to get their PoI and Skill Point with some moderate discomfort and fuss. This is how it should be.
Let me put it this way: It’s not really a “Skill Point” if the only skill you need is a server-wide assault. The idea of a Skill Point is that you can get it if you have some skill. This is true for every other Skill Point in the game. Why is this particular Skill Point different?
Does that make more sense?
Short Version:
The Temple of Balthazar has become so unrewarding and painful that it is increasingly difficult to find people to go near it. Please consider a reduction in the veteran’s minion spawnrate, and or reducing the not-so-random rain of fire. It makes trying to get the skill point incredibly painful for the players. Other temples handle this balance just fine, why is this one different?
Long Version:
I’ve just finished repairing for the 20th time. That’s an estimate. I actually stopped counting a couple of hours ago. I know I have spent well over a gold just in repairs though. I keep hurtling my body at the risen hordes using various combinations of my Asuran genius and mesmer skills to try to get the last skill point I need for this map. It’s all I have left. This one point.
I’ve tried rolling from veil to mass invis and communing while stealthed, but the rain of fire always hits me with only a second or so left on the progress bar. It’s not really random. I know that now.
I’ve tried burning down the vets, and the infinite minions they spawn. The number of minions they can produce is staggering. I would be willing to wager some gold that just one of those vets could solo Giganticus Lupicus just through never-ending waves of the minions they spawn from nothing.
I’ve tried going with other people as well, but we were still unable to burn down all the vets required before the ones we had just finished off respawned behind us. Yes, it is that quick. I realize it is an MMO, and we should be doing things in groups, but even groups are having trouble here.
Calls to the map go largely unanswered. No one wants to deal with this Temple. A check of the temple status right now shows that not one American server has this temple open. No one is even trying it. This is normal.
This is not a new thing. It was this painful on my warrior and engineer too. In the warrior’s case, I just gave up and left this single Skill Point alone. For the engineer, I wound up camping the temple status web page and guesting to a server that had it open finally. It took days for that.
I know people will claim that it is supposed to be like this, and if only I didn’t suck I could do it and they all got that skill point on their level 2 thief, but I am not buying it. This is not the first, second, or even third time I have seen this level of pain at just this one temple. The other temples are annoying, sure… but they are not so over-the-top that people actively avoid them.
I’m not asking to make it stupidly easy. There is no fun in that. Putting a finite cap on the minion spawn would be a reasonable compromise. Maybe reducing the mob count or increasing the respawn rate? Even just toning down the rain of fiery doom would help.
In summary: Could you guys please consider making the Temple of Balthazar a bit more like the other temples in terms of moving around them and getting completion done?
Sincerely,
Bruised and Bloody in the Straits of Devastation
Oh! I need this so badly. I am tired of being destroyed in sPVP by thieves and necros, and I desperately want to master this class.
Name: Fluttershy
Server: Ehmry Bay
Playstyle: WvW, sPVP, and PVE (non-dungeon)
Playtimes: 7:00pm CST => midnight M-F 4:00pm CST => 2am Sat/Sun
Requested Role: Scholar – I know enough to realize that I know absolutely nothing.

Engineer portal would be awesome. Some soft of brass manhole with a wicked iris you throw down on the ground that ejects steam and whatnot.
A chainsaw kit would be amazing. I would equip it every moment I am in a major city just to be THAT Asura.
Really just more variety in weapons though. Where are our hammers? On that note: we’re not just engineers. We’re supposed to be geniuses at alchemy too. Give us a grenade launcher that throws actual potion vials. This is what the elixir gun SHOULD be.
It’d be nice to have a reliable water field that doesn’t eat our heal slot too. It would make us more attractive in WvW and Dungeons.
I’ve tried a couple of different things, and found that I feel the most helpful running interference on the fingers/mobs on the turrets and keeping them fully repaired.
It’s not as glamorous, as hitting a dragon in the face, but it’s an essential role where I felt I was directly contributing in a noticeable way. I know the folks running with me seemed to appreciate the damage, light fields, and supply crates when the fingers popped and the champs zerged the turrets. I grabbed a wrench in the down periods and topped off the turret health.
Everyone wants to be on the frontline in the stack, but without the support in the back that dragon isn’t going anywhere.
What? Where is the Asura love? You DO know we are geniuses, right?
Pros:
Cons
(edited by MeanCoffeeBean.2073)
I can give that build a try Soon. Would you mind posting your traits? I don’t mind if it takes longer to kill the mobs.. I just don’t want to get carpal-tunnel to do it every single time. Even Ele attunement swapping is more relaxed than what I am having to do to drop anything Veteran.
Is the #2 FT blast really as broken as it seems? Auto-detonation on hit is really, really hit and miss (pun entirely intended). Manual detonation is more reliable, but fails on mobs that are moving left/right instead of standing still or running right toward me.
I’m trying the camera change, but I just tested it in WvW and when targetting a player that is running by me, the entire channeled jet seems to go behind them and do nothing but miss. I tried manually forcing the camera to slightly lead the target and it still mostly missed. I would rather the developers just decouple the jet from a targetting mechanic entirely than leave it like this. I can aim it myself, but it autocorrects WRONG.
I don’t think of myself as a spammer. I really do want to get this class down, but I really feel like I am fighting buggy mechanics more than the other players and mobs. I have no interest in the former. That’s not fun.
I am going to piggyback off of this thread rather than start a new one.
I’m level 64 now on my engineer and incredibly frustrated. I think I need some advice, because I am very close to dumping my engineer and rolling a new character. I read this forum daily looking for nuggets of wisdom and advice, but I just don’t know what I am doing wrong.
Background:
- I’m running the FT/EG build that Phineas.Poe posted and has great reviews on the build sites. The mechanics of it makes sense. The relationship between the kits makes sense.
- I do PVE and WvW, but my primary concern is PVE right now and I am not worried about rebuilding for WvW until I have hit 80 and exhausted my PVE wants.
- I live in Flamethrower most of the time. I pop Elixir Gun for the light field + acid as I go. I use my regular heal and not the turret because the mobs always destroy it before I get any healing out of it. I even drop to pistol/shield for the double-tap shield daze and pushback.
- I love, love, love the -IDEA- of the flamethrower and I intuitively get the rhythm of it.
- I keep my gear up to date with blues/greens with mostly beserker or assassin stats.
BUT. . .
What I see when I try to kite a mob, and my auto-attack jet is firing is: MISS MISS MISS MISS
If the mob is running, all I see is: MISS MISS MISS MISS
Blasts detonate in random places that are not on the mob. If the mob is moving (like most do) then a good chunk of the time even manually detonating the blast has it blow to the side of the target and inflict little to no damage at all.
Anything Veteran or higher is such a pain to kill that I actively avoid it now. Once I am out of endurance, they hit like a truck, and I can’t circle-kite because of the MISS MISS MISS MISS issues.
I try to keep CC working for me, but it just isn’t enough.
Kit swapping is fine, but I feel like I am manically pressing the keys and rolling through crazy combos just to do less damage than I did on my warrior or mesmer.
The possibilities are there. I can see it. With this class, I have already pulled off some really awesome memorable moments that I could never do with another class.
But… by the gods, why are things so broken? Why does targeting only work sometimes? Why does my auto-attack ALWAYS miss if either the mob or myself is moving (a requirement in Guild Wars)? Why do my abilities do amazing things sometimes and the next completely fall apart? Why is killing a veteran an exercise in carpal-tunnel research?
I want to like this class. I really do.
So tell me… is it me? Is it the profession? Does it get better?
I can try the weapon swap, but I am profoundly lazy. I’ll give it a shot though!
Thanks for the confirmation on the off-hand use of Blood. I didn’t know that it was broken though… I might have to look into something else instead. I do love having Bloodlust just for the 250 power while completing maps.
This is a general question, but since I am playing a warrior it seemed like this was a good place to ask given the depth of knowledge you all seem to have.
I am a newly christened 80 PVE warrior. My primary set of weapons is sword+axe. The axe (my offhand) has Superior Sigil of Blood on it. It actually came with it from the TP, so I don’t feel too bad, but the question is:
With a crit-based sigil like Blood’s life-steal: will it trigger regularly when it is on an off-hand weapon, or does the off-hand weapon only theoretically strike when you use skill 4 or 5?
Notes:
- I have checked the general forums, guildwars2guru, the GW2 wiki, stackexchange, etc. and the information I see is conflicting or inconclusive.
- Some of the theory I have seen states that crit-based sigil procs work regardless of which weapon they are on.
- I run a sigil-build with regeneration passive, so seeing green numbers while fighting is pretty normal for me. It is difficult to distinguish the numbers for myself given standard sigil regneration, regeneration from adrenal health, and regeneration from Dogged March.
- My main-hand weapon (sword) is running Superior Sigil of Bloodlust for the power boost. This predates the axe and Sigil of Blood in question.
Thanks in advance!
