Did I get lucky? I bought 10 boxes for 800 gems(from gold).
lots of clothes
ticket for free skin(got the staff)
some tonics
mini infiniarium
2 dye packs
the dagger skin that you get for 100 clothes
snowflakes

Very. I spent $30 and got 2 dye packs.

Only 3200 gems to go! I can’t imagine why people are complaining, by those odds it’s only $60 for one mini! What a steal!

I think that’s the heart of it. You know why some players rather play subscription based MMOs? It’s because of the comfort it provides. When I have to always be on edge on whether or not I’m missing out on a piece of content because I didn’t peel out my check book on time, I lose that relaxing feeling that I’m supposed to have when playing a game.

I want relaxing, make it yours type of events where I don’t have to feel at odds with the community or the developers.

Dropping the limited edition Minis in a RNG lottery box is nothing but a blatant cash grab aimed at the innate weakness of voracious players. It’s a predatory move.

My thoughts exactly. The root of this problem seems to stem from the fact that this seems like a predatory move that takes advantage of a player’s core. Some collectors view this as a company being disloyal to them. To those who don’t think anything of cosmetics, or the basic ideal behind this concern, they view dissenters as having a false claim.

The new marketing idea is “lets sell them the least amount of content we can for the most amount of money.”

Cynicism to the max. And to be frank, that’s the same operating strategy ANY company will run. The difference is, GW2 is offering huge amounts of content for FREE, before any of the optional extras which you’re charged for.

Being cynical is the only way you can avoid being ripped off. If you aren’t cynical in certain respects nowadays you look like a tool.

To be fair, I payed $80 for this free experience and if I see the game is growing in the direction I feel is appropriate, I will gladly give them money through the gem store.

What I don’t want, however, is for arena net to think that players will take money grabbing laying down. I’m all for supporting a company through vanity store purchases but, in my humble opinion, I think arena net has taken it a little too far too quick.

I don’t want to see a game I really truly love be condemned in my eyes for over the top money grabbing. I still have great respect for anyone who can argue a point, so I won’t be one to throw out nasty remarks towards players.

The new marketing idea is “lets sell them the least amount of content we can for the most amount of money.” What’s the best way to do this? Take advantage of player behavior, ie: the collector, and place highly demanded items into an RNG.

Sounds great on paper, but sometimes people forget that they are dealing with people here who don’t, on average, like seeing a whole days’ wages go down the tube. Despite what some corporate businessmen might believe, we aren’t idiotic robots that throw money at things without due compensation.

Also, no one is saying that this is a bad game; far from it to be exact. But, this type of continued money grabbing is vitriolic to healthy player-company interactions.

I definitely hate the packs (calling them packs cause they’re essentially the same as Perfect World International’s infamous RNG packs for good items). RNG is a terrible way to go about collectibles such as minis. I opened 20 and got crap, a friend opened 20 and got his minis and made a quaggan. Not going to bother spending gems on special event things again if it’s only gonna be RNG.

Word.

I spent $30 on these filthy things and received no minis whatsoever. In return for my $30, I got 5 silver worth of junk.

Seems like a great ripoff scheme anet has going here.

I will no longer support this company with my money unless I see a remarked change in the way they treat collectors. Quite simply, KEEP RNG OUT OF THE GEM STORE.

The point is that it is a slippery slope to manage once you start handing out exclusive content for every little purchase. It can snowball quickly from appearance item one day, to a game enhancing item the next. I don’t like seeing these unobtainable exclusives anywhere, and think that it’s a dirty practice to garner revenue. A discount should have been enough.

Just look at a free to play game like runescape as a cautionary tale of F2P; a game whose web page almost entirely consists of getting people to funnel money into them for time exclusive offers that include in game items. The time exclusive or unobtainable part is where most have the problem.

Did everyone for get we got this for buying the game early and not only that, we also got the Devil Horn and Witch Hat for playing up till now. 3 free hats and you guys are complaining about not getting 1?

The difference is that all of those items were obtainable by everyone else — an equal opportunity. Some people don’t like this slippery slope of in-game exclusives that some companies fall under the influence of to take advantage of their players.

If they were to add this to the gem store at a later date, or at the very least make it obtainable, no one here would have a problem. Let the community know if this will forever and always be unobtainable.

I don’t like how people who disagree with people on the forums try to belittle an argument by calling someone who they disagree with whiners or babies. The concern is not with this hat in particular, but the way in which this might pave way for more gimmicky exclusives in the future that focus on taking advantage of the collector mentality.

If you don’t have the collector mentality, good for you, but that does not mean you get to call someone a whiner because they have a concern. This isn’t addressed to you in particular, just in general.

The best example of this I can give is from Mythic and Warhammer Online. Even through all their hardships, I’ve never met another company that I can say I was able to join their Dev vent and actually talk to the developers of a game. Some people like to roleplay as a childish brat character; I say most do a good job at it.

I see problems with some RPers just as I see problems with some PvPers. I’ve known quite a few RPers who talk down to others and are unable to see any other side to something other than their own. Every community has its outliers.

There’s nothing wrong with valuing a personal take on your character. Even though I consider myself a PvPer, I have developed a backstory for each of my characters and tailored their personalities to fit.

If people who bought the game after the very start of the game don’t care about useless cosmetic items like this, why would they think that this bonus would garner more income for them and their promotion?

It’s quite obvious that people with a collector mentality will be the first ones to buy a game in fear of missing out on content, and they just pushed these people aside without even a consideration. Why not add it to the digital deluxe items instead?

Are some of you really so dense as to think that this is all about some silly old hat? It’s the underlying motivation of the matter that some find offensive. I don’t complain if others get something on special because I know that I can go out, just as they did, and get it myself. I would have no problem if I had to buy this hat in the gem shop. It’s the fact that it’s entirely unobtainable by anyone playing the game before this point.

And how is a virtual hat any more trivial or “petty” than a virtual legendary item that people come here to constantly give their feedback on? Some need to be respectful of opinions not originating from themselves.

Give me the hat or don’t; I just don’t want to see the game I like take a turn like so many other F2P games that hand out these exclusive items to take advantage of a collector mentality. Just look at games like runescape who string players on by giving them a new toy each time they buy a game time card.

I think this is what it comes down to. I do believe our differences come from where we are raised or how we view business relations in general.

Some people believe that if you give a company money and are loyal, that along with this should come some amount of company respect towards the consumer.

Others believe that companies are by default, greedy corporate machines, with their only intent to squeeze out every dime from a consumer that they can. They accept this fact, and ask themselves why anyone would be so stupid to think otherwise.

I’d like to think this company is one that respects their consumers and values them for more than the amount in their checking account, but maybe I’m fooling myself and you are right.

It’s just the small smacks to the face like this to the loyal customers that really drives home the point that it’s all about money, rather than pleasing the fans.

We’re all adults here, and there’s no need to call someone a brat because they feel slighted.

I’m not a fan of companies that keep players in an endless collection cycle by waving a new “unique” toy in their faces every week. It takes advantage of players who don’t want to miss out, and is a very disrespectful practice in general.

This type of add-on content should not exist going forward. I don’t mind paying for content, but it better be available to all. I don’t like it when gamestop or amazon does it, and I don’t like it here. Someone should not be limited in content because of their time or choice of retailer.

It’s not even about the hat, but rather the more aggressive direction being taken here to get to the all mighty dollar. The fact that this practice is so familiar now, that it is accepted, shows a great deal how successful companies are to take advantage of their customers. I don’t like being seen as a tool.

I guess you can attribute this to the fact that each weapon attributes itself to a particular type of combat. In PvP, the most effective type of weapon for going up against players is going to be used by the large majority. Effectiveness here depends on two things though: the effectiveness of the weapon itself, and your prowess using such a weapon. If you aren’t as disciplined in using the greatsword, you won’t — that’s a no brainer. But when the most effective weapon for combat is also the easiest to use, then there’s no excuse not to use it.

The point I’m trying to make is that it’s not that the other weapons are vastly inferior, it’s just that the greatsword generally lends itself to the easier combat mechanics in a tense, short-lived PvP fight and therefore might be more effective to the player.

In summary, in real life you don’t usually bring a sword to a gun fight. Sure, you can really do some damage with a sword, but you have to put a lot more effort into killing somebody with a sword that shooting them with a pistol. It’s all about the situation.
