I only specified this one as it’s probably one of the most frequented chests in the game being a Magnificent Chest in the busiest area
It also makes me wonder; if exotics are possible, maybe precursors are…
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
I’d also add that players get frustrated as the developers rarely if ever expand on why they have made the decisions they have made. Not once have I seen a developer expand on why they felt the need to add extra tiers of gear. I’ve seen them say that they always intended to (something simply playing the game disputes), but they’ve never said why.
An insight into the decision making process can help players understand why things are the way they are. Left to their own devices, it’s only natural that people will start to conjure up wild conspiracy theories linking every decision made by the developers to heartless capitalisation and the gem store.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
Then give an honest answer instead of one that has been obviously crafted by marketing scum.
If asked “Do you have any plans to add further tiers to the game?”, a better response is something more friendly and honest such as “At the moment, no. But we can’t predict whether we will need to in the future or not”. It doesn’t have to be a blatant “Yes” or “No”. Just something a little less reptilian and a little more human.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
I prefer straight answers; sales and marketing lingo with its evasive phrasing annoys me and makes me believe that the person using said language does not respect me.
This type of language has been predominant from ArenaNet recently, with all answers sufficiently ambiguous so as to constantly allow themselves “Get out of jail free” cards.
Answers such as “We will not be adding another tier of gear in 2013” when asked if they will be adding more tiers above ascended to the game. The subtext here is that they may very well add extra tiers in any year after 2013.
It’s cowardly.

To clarify, that’s the “Pirate” jumping puzzle in LA.
A couple of nights ago I was running my warrior through it by routine when he received the exotic dagger “Moonshank” from the Magnificent Chest. I’m debating whether to keep it for one of my alts or to sell it on the BLTC.
What’s the best thing you’ve had from that chest?

Don’t worry hithlain, there’s an aggravating amount of posters on these forums who try to one-up you having just read thread titles. Just be satisfied that they end up looking the pillock.
However, this and variations on the theme have been suggested thousands of times, yet ArenaNet persist in ignoring it.
Personally, I think charging for travel is a bad thing full stop, putting barriers between players who are looking to join up and clear content together.
The problem’s amplified by the stunningly bad decision to make the cost scale with character level.
Why is that decision bad?
At the moment, a level 80 player is best off spending their time playing in level 80 areas, of which there are only 2 in the game, one of which is tiny and underdeveloped.
Getting to Cursed Shore costs a small fortune, at least 2 silver, and if they were to then join a low level player, a further high cost is incurred. Let alone which, when they DO finally join their low level friends, upon completion of events that lowbie friend can teleport around the map without a care in the world as waypoint costs are negligible. Yet the level 80 player will be looking to spend 1S70C minimum, which results in groups splitting very quickly.
But as always, this and any argument like it will be dismissed with the mantra “It’s a gold sink dummy!”.

I got LB and sword/torch as I believe that torch got the strongest skills in the entire class even if you don’t have any condition damage.
If I’m wrong , what is the strongest one ? ( off hand )
Amen, especially when combined with Off-Hand Training, which gives Bonfire a MUCH larger radius.
Ranger condition builds should all take advantage of the number of conditions a ranger has access to, and S/T gives access to almost all except bleeding, which can be set up to proc on pet attacks.

Then it must be an insane laugh, as those 20,000 achievement points offer nothing as a reward and they have been gained through mindless clicking.
Someone with 4,000+ achievement points gained through normal play and filling achievement bars that have hard limits will be at a distinct advantage when these fixes are finally rolled out.

As an English person, I can tell you that one of the Sylvari actresses is god-awful.
It’s the one who’s having a discussion about festivals with the Asura in LA. She also voices a prominent storyline character.
It’s a really bad accent and blatantly obvious that it’s not the actor’s native voice.
But I agree that Jennifer Hale’s Sylvari is spectacular. Hers is a standout performance.
“Oh. What’s happening?” is my favourite confusion bark in the game
Regarding accents I’d like to see, I found it very refreshing when playing The Witcher 2 to encounter Northern Irish and Welsh accents.
I’d also be keen to see some accents representative of my own, a West Country rural one (I’m from the original Berkeley, and it’s a bit of a Pirate’s accent). A good analogue of my accent is if you’ve seen Hot Fuzz. That scene in the field where Nick Frost acts as translator for the old farmer was a hoot to me, as I know a lot of people like that. I wish you could hear my friend Ricky speak. He speaks like that at 100 miles an hour.
Geordie would be great, as would a distinctly Glaswegian accent. And Glaswegian is a very particular accent, vastly different to other Scottish ones.

For levelling 1-80 in the open world, they’re one of the most fun and easy classes.
I don’t take mine into dungeons, but I don’t really enjoy instanced content.
In Wuvwuv, they’re fun, but it’s hard to get kills and you will become a target as other classes see you as an easy mark.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
You have to think about the Ranger sword as a completely different weapon to the implementation other professions use.
Try to get in the habit of using Hornet Sting and Serpent’s Strike to disengage.
But even after all this time of playing a predominantly S/T ranger, I still find myself hammering keys wondering why my double-tap dodge doesn’t work.
Relying on Hornet Sting isn’t the best call either, as even the slightest terrain undulation can break the skill.
But them’s the breaks. If you want to use a sword (and the animations ARE cool), you’ll just have to put up with the lock-on ’til they fix it.
A more useful tip is to mainly use sword in PvE and anything else in WvW/sPvP.
In any PvP environment, you’ll be dealing with intelligent targets that can easily break the sword’s auto attack, whereas in PvE, mobs just stand there and soak it up.
Exploiting the stupidity of the AI makes for some really cool condition damage builds where you can hit an enemy with almost all of the conditions in the game very quickly and have numbers spewing out of them like rats out of a sinking ship.
With a cat pet applying bleeds as well as Frost Trap and Spike Trap as utilities, my S/T Ranger can hit an enemy very quickly with burning, freezing, poison, bleeding, vulnerability and cripple. I find this far more effective than stacking one particular condition, especially as they can be judiciously re-applied, with none ever able to fully run out.

Beowulf Wyrmslayer is my main (human) warrior. He takes the name of his Guild Wars 1 forebear.
Beowulf obviously from the epic poem. Wyrmslayer as he kills dragons.
My ranger is a Sylvari called Wildheart. Again, her name follows that of my GW1 ranger’s, who was Wildheart Everlone.
Her name is a direct reference to the British heavy metal band “The Wildhearts”.
Similarly, my human mesmer is called Nexus Icon, a song by The Wildhearts about a particularly narcissistic rock star. It just seemed fitting for a mesmer.
My Asuran thief is Spring Heeled Jack .
I have three Norn.
A female elementalist called Hurdy Gurdy, an homage to the Swedish Chef and the comedy language option in Guild Wars 1.
A male guardian called Norbert Twice. I don’t know why, but the name has a nice feel to it, a certain rhythm.
And a female warrior called Magnificent Chest. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
My gigantic Charr engineer is called Mister Tiddles. Want to make something of it?
It was a continual source of amusement having him accompanied by his best mate Dinky during the personal story.
My other two characters are Moonyew, a male Sylvari necromancer and Mireclaw, a female Charr thief. Not too fussed either way about those names.

I’ve made the same point before, highlighting the fact that ArenaNet considered stealth twice before in the first game and abandoned it both times after reaching the conclusion that it’s overpowered as a mechanic (in GW1 beta, Ranger had a stealth stat, and Shadowstepping was developed for Assassins in Factions as a viable alternative).
But you’ll get a lot of noise on the forums from players defending the mechanic.
Deep down, everyone knows it’s overpowered to the point of being broken, but that’s why they defend it. They don’t want their most powerful tool taken away.
Combining both shadowstepping and stealth to create the Thief profession was one of the worst decisions I’ve seen ArenaNet make. I can only assume that those people who actively avoided implementing it in the first game must no longer work for the company.

Attached is the state of WvW at 7:27 this morning.
It’s been like that every day since Saturday. Fighting and clawing back territory has been painful, with GH able to rebuff assaults on every front. When I gave up on WvW yesterday evening, neither Whiteside or RoF had managed to reclaim any land in EB and were still fighting desperate battles against overwhelming numbers in their own borderlands.
If people are to be enticed to play WvW, there needs to be some sort of fair play mechanism implemented to prevent this kind of thing from happening. Say a cap on the number of each enemy’s players in ones’ own borderlands equal to home numbers +5% or something like that.
I’m just not going to bother for the rest of this week.
The previous couple of weeks have been the first ones where I’ve really started to get interested in WvW, and I was beginning to really enjoy it, but the experience so far this week is enough to drive me away again. I can only imagine the same can be said for a lot of players who dabble only to face overwhelming odds.
Kudos to those I’ve played with and against, but there’s only so much of a beating a person can take before choosing to avoid said beating.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
If you’re not 80 yet, there’s another thing to remember when picking up weapons you can use. If your greatsword dropped later than your axes, chances are it’s for a higher lever character and therefore statistically better than the axes.
To really compare, you’d need axes of the same level and quality as the greatsword.
It sounds obvious, but due to how infrequently weapons your class can actually use drop in PvE, it’s very hard to accurately gauge the differences between weapon types.
Just sayin’.
Edt: Oh yeah, and most of the time, I run with axe/warhorn.
Perma-swiftness is addictive, plus with warhorn skills converting conditions to boons, no other melee weapon offers as great a benefit, even my beloved hammer.
Sure, GS does lots of damage, if things stand still, but axe/warhorn allows me total freedom of movement when activating skills, at top speed with lots of buffs.
Oh, AND lots of damage thanks to frequent crits proccing sigil of rage.

Wow, they really said this in the live stream?
I’ve never even contemplated AoE being too powerful. If anything, it’s underpowered.
There’s so many trait lines that help you negate the already low damage from AoE, especially when ressing.
To nerf AoE is insane.
I mean, come on, Meteor Shower is a shadow of the skill it was in the original game already. It no longer knocks down anyone standing in its AoE.
And yeah, I’ve never seen ANYONE complain about AoE except for incredibly new players who haven’t got used to seeing the red ring yet.
Can I get an exact quote so I can be sure I’m not misconstruing their intent?
I’d watch the stream, but I’m at work.

I’m old school GW, so in my eyes, regular, no-risk IAS is the pinnacle.
To that end, an axe with a rage sigil backed up with an offhand with a perception sigil and Knight’s armour / trinkets gives me frequent procs of quickness, more frequent than Frenzy’s cooldown, and with none of the risk associated with Frenzy.
Heck, I don’t even have anything specced in arms, yet my crit chance when the perception sigil is at 25 is over 80%.

What makes me laugh is that by doing the personal story, I’ve ended up with the human cultural tier 3 skins for sword, staff and scepter. Sod spending 63,000 karma on bloody rares.
Oh yeah, and what’s up with that?
Orrian temple armor costs 42,000 a piece and is exoctic, yet tier 3 cultural weapons cost 63,000 karma each and are rare.

The Jaguar’s stealth is incredibly powerful as the pet doesn’t lose stealth when attacking.
Used intelligently, you can lay down a lot of hurt on unsuspecting enemies in WvW.
But in regards the original topic, I would disagree. This game needs less invisibility, not more.
And that’s what “Stealth” in Guild Wars 2 really is: Invisibility.
For games that do stealth properly, check out games like Thief, Dishonored or Deus Ex.
That lighting levels don’t affect a thief’s ability to hide in GW2 is a crime. Stealth should be as much about player skill as any other aspect of playing the game, but in order to implement it properly there would have to be deep changes to the core game.
Stealth should be a thing of slow pace, observation and careful movement between objects that hide you.
Pressing a button to disappear from sight isn’t skill.

@critickitten:
They used “Star” voice actors that have a huge presence in a high percentage of games releases over the past few years. People like Nolan North, Steve Blum and Jennifer Hale.
If they were being sensible, they would have gone for cheaper voice actors, resulting in more being available and also a lot of voices not made contemptuous by over-familiarity.
They could also have hired English actors instead of North Americans doing bad English accents for the Sylvari. I’ve heard us Brits are ridiculously cheap to hire when compared to American voice talent.

Oh another thing that doesn’t help; all of the Borderlands maps are identical.
I’m sure people wouldn’t complain so much if either:
1: Completing one Borderlands map counted as completing all of them
or
2: Each Borderlands map was very different from the others. Of course, with differences in terrain, people are bound to complain about imbalances, but I think it’s worth pursuing.
When I was doing my first star, I was completely confused by all the Borderlands maps being the same and couldn’t understand why a vista I had done was suddenly marked as undiscovered. When I realised what was going on, there was a sense of disappointment at the lack of creativity shown by the developers. Having different Borderlands maps, preferably on a per server basis, would help foster a sense of server and community identity.
For example, my server is Ring of Fire, so a Borderlands map consisting of volcanic islands akin to the Ring of Fire islands in the first game would make sense.
Henge of Denravi could have an area reminiscent of the Maguuma jungle; Gunnar’s Hold a classic snowy, mountainous Norn area.
Having areas unique to servers would further kindle excitement about exploration with new worlds becoming available on a weekly basis. I’m not saying you should have to explore them all (impractical given the tiered ranking system); say only 3 of all possible Borderlands. But improved variety would drastically improve things.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
I’d like to recommend a compromise.
As an Early Access player, I was able to get my world completion in the first two weeks of release, and within those two weeks, world transfers weren’t just free; they were instant.
I acknowledge that this wasn’t really in the spirit of the achievement, and I’m actually quite enjoying watching the WvW maps now in order to grab those last few bits of EB in order to get a second star for my account.
However, I also think that there is something ArenaNet could do to make world exploration a lot more palatable to people, especially those who can’t stand WvW.
Don’t drop Wuvwuv map completion from the achievement, but move all vistas, PoIs and skill points out of keeps/towers and into the open world so that they are attainable without having to capture that point for your world first.
Personally, I’m happy with it the way it is, and it adds a longer term goal to my character, but I think the compromise outlined above would be acceptable.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
Condition removal would still remove the entire stack, so nothing to worry about there.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
Yup, fair enough, I can see that the “25% chance of rarer” materials on a Master kit would apply equally to any new material tier.
But you agree that a new tier of materials is necessary and fundamentally affects almost every other area of the game?
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
smart move if you ask me. a good day in wvw can net you in excess of 100k karma. now think about that vs a time-contraint currency and you’ll see why the devs adopted this model.
That’s an interesting point, but are we comfortable acknowledging that access to top tier gear should be constrained by time?
Note I’m not talking about the most aesthetically pleasing stuff, rather baseline, top level stats.
As exotics are currently top tier, at the moment I can get a character to 80 and as long as I have access to the Orrian temples, immediately get them a set of top tier armour thanks to stockpiled Karma. Not trinkets or weapons, and only 5 out of 6 of one stat combination, plus mixed and matched runes, but still exotic gear.
This is a good thing in my eyes (although they should really be less stingy and make exotic weapons, trinkets and the 6th piece available too).
Restricting access to top tier gear based on time just adds required grind, something they’ve said that GW2 will never possess.
I hate to use hyperbole and speculation, but such an implementation really does seem to be about pleasing the more traditional MMO audience.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
I think Confusion shouldn’t have a duration, rather it should affect the next X attacks or skill activations. This would make it a lot more viable in PvE while not overpowering it in WvW.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
How on Earth is this suggestion “Communism”?
The proposed crowns are received for gaining achievements.
Guess what you currently get for getting your daily and monthly achievements?
Karma!
Adding another form of reward to such activities when there’s already an under-utilised one is just plain stupid.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
I didn’t say new gear, I said new tokens as a way to attain new gear.
The point being, you shouldn’t need new tokens, you should just be able to utilise the existing systems.
So an Exotic piece of armour costs 42,000 Karma currently, so maybe an Ascended piece should cost 84,000 instead of some added new token such as Crowns?
It’s getting needlessly complicated keeping track of the numbers of currencies in the game.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
This constant addition of new tokens and a continual fragmenting of the rewards system seems to be straying away from what I understood was supposed to be a core concept of the game:
That you were supposed to be able to gear to top level with Karma but that prestige aesthetic gear would only be attainable through other, grindier means.
Karma seems to be consistently ignored, yet at top level we’re ending up with gallons of the stuff and nothing to spend it on.
Why introduce the new “Crowns” system when you should be utilising the already existent Karma system?
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
Oh and a further note on materials for Ascended.
If it were to fit into the current crafting mechanic, the ectoplasm analog would have to be salvageable from the gear tier below Ascended, in the same way that Ectoplasm can be salvaged from the gear tier below Exotic.
That means you would need to salvage Exotic gear to get the material needed to craft Ascended.
But I’m guessing they haven’t thought this far ahead.
That’s to say nothing of level 80 greens, blues and whites producing Gossamer and Orichalcum when salvaged. What gear is going to result in Ascended quality basic materials being the result of salvage?
Is this going to require a Salvage kit level above Master or Black Lion?
Layers upon layers of evidence that Ascended was not planned prior to release.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
(edited by Mungrul.9358)
Ascended is half-baked for numerous mechanical reasons that need to be addressed before it becomes even remotely acceptable.
If there are to be more ways of acquiring Ascended gear, these methods need to follow the “Rules” laid out by previous gear tiers.
It needs to be available through:
1: Crafting
2: Karma
3: Tokens
4: Open World Chests
5: Trading Post
For 1: Ideally, there needs to be a new tier of crafting materials made available. These material categories are recipe, wood, metal, leather, cloth, gem, fine materials and an Ectoplasm analog.
This is where it becomes immediately obvious that despite what ArenaNet have said in various attempts to justify Ascended gear, it was added as an after-thought.
To make these things fit into the game, you would be redefining the economy as it currently stands. It would immediately de-value current economical touchstones that maintain a consistent value.
In addition, for correct implementation of Ascended, we would require an increase in the crafting level caps and either modification of existing maps’ crafting nodes or at least one large new area with crafting nodes appropriate to Ascended. This also raises the very valid point that if Orichalcum is no longer the top tier metal, why are the nodes limited and randomised?
For 2: This is the easiest way for ArenaNet to make a new tier of gear available and is currently criminally under-utilised as a reward mechanism. But again, it immediately de-values the exotic Karma gear from Orrian temple vendors. The only reason to buy those sets in an Ascended future would be for appearance.
For 3: Another relatively easy way of implementing Ascended gear, yet we start to realise that in order to distinguish it, we would require completely new artwork of a calibre notably more impressive than current dungeon armour.. This would require a lot of artistic development, something I doubt very much they thought through when pushing Ascended out of the door. I’ll expand on artistic asset development shortly.
For 4: Exotic gear rarely drops from chests, but it does drop. Interestingly, this also results in a situation where a pre-cursor weapon will potentially be at most, third best gear in the future after the full implementation of Ascended and Legendary tiers. Yet again, this hints at the rushed job that Ascended gear really was.
For 5: Ascended items, much like Exotic, must be tradeable. This ties deeply in to points 1 and 4. Why craft Ascended beyond for immediate use if it can’t be sold? If Ascended gear can’t be sold, we’re talking massive problems retaining value for the crafting materials necessary to create them when bought from the trading post.
And please note, this isn’t a “Pick one” scenario. All of these options must be implemented to maintain game consistency.
A further note on art:
Every method of acquiring gear results in that gear having an appearance unique to that method.
This will require a lot of work on ArenaNet’s behalf, and they haven’t solved a lot of the clipping and stretching issues with current gear tiers yet.
Looking at the amount of work required for proper implementation of Ascended, it becomes obvious that no matter what they insist, ArenaNet never originally intended for there to be a tier above Exotic.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
Ha, looks like ArenaNet nicked one of my ideas:
You know, reading this, I realised they should do monthly achievements the same way they do the major event ones (like Halloween, Southsun Cove & Wintersday).
Some people don’t want to do jumping puzzles, some don’t like fractals and others can’t stand WvWvW. So why not make more achievement tracks for monthlies, yet require less than all? That way people could choose which ones they want to do.For example, there could be 6 achievement tracks:
50 kills in Wuvwuv.
15 Fractals.
30 Jumpin Puzzles.
100 Events.
100 People ressed.
5 maps completed.Yet only 4 of those would need to be done to get the achievement.
Thoughts?
And from the blog:
Later, we’ll also be adding a system that lets you complete a subgroup of achievements to fulfill your daily. For example, if there are 6 daily achievements available, you’ll only need to do 4 of the 6. So you can choose the achievements that you’re most interested in.

Assuming you don’t cheat via a teleport bug, one of the POIs requires you to get to the level 77 quest in personal story. While that’s not “completion” of your personal story, it’s pretty close.
That’s actually been fixed, and you can now enter that micro instance as soon as you get to Straits of Devastation.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
I did this on my main character back when server transfers were pretty much instant by transferring to whichever server held the PoI/Vista I wanted.
And this makes me realise the ArenaNet are missing a very lucrative financial trick here.
If they can finally get the code fixed that charges for server transfers, they can make them instant again and plenty of PvE players who hate wuvwuv will pay the money for the transfers.
As it stands, server transfers have been free for far too long now, and all of the competitive Wuvwuvers have moved to the successful servers, resulting in a massive imbalance between the top and bottom of the table. This in turn means it’ll take a massive amount of time for people on low ranked servers to get world completion, if ever.
Those servers at the bottom will never be at a stage where they own all of an opposing team’s borderlands or all of EB.
Telling people to transfer at the moment means they’ll be locked out of their “Home” server for a week by the way, something just not viable if you’re in an active guild.

By the way, to the person saying that these topics are always created by people who have never played Thief, that’s a bad straw man and I’m here to prove you wrong. I play Thief.
I know how imbalanced they are, and as stated many times by myself already, I’m curious why ArenaNet, who in the past have acknowledged how badly imbalanced a mechanic stealth is, have all of a sudden thought different with GW2.
If you’re going to try to contribute, do it with something relevant to the discussion. Reinforce your point by stating why you think stealth ISN’T imbalanced.
Stay away from the ad hominems. It’s a weak argumentative style and contributes nothing to the discussion.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
But that’s part of my point. They combined both Shadow Step and Stealth which it was meant to replace. Arguably, shadow step skills in GW2 are much better than they ever were in GW1. There’s not much to indicate balance other than the reasonably short durations of stealth skills. There probably are ways to balance unconditional stealth, but not many are apparent in the current GW2 implementation.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
It’s good to see ideas about how to moderate stealth, but I am genuinely curious to see a developer’s justification for adding it.
