I can at least confirm they do use the same dyes available to us, being that I’ve been able to replicate Adamant Guard, Ash Legion, Vigil Crusaders, Seraph, and other NPCs without too much trouble. Might cost a little bit to get right, though. Something I used that helped me quite a bit is this color chart, and there’s also this dye catalog.

Order of Whispers is the next on my list I’d like to mimic, but that’s on hold because I need every copper for my asura’s T3 armor. Anyway, hope the above links can help a little bit!

Mutiny.4180

If they did expansions that way (and I sincerely hope they don’t, because things will get dull awfully fast unless they have a fast release cycle), then everything but skritt makes sense. Pitting tengu against Primordus is the best fit, since they’re already having to deal with destroyers anyone. Skritt being a minor race rules them out of playability, and the fact that they already have a city.

I’m pretty sure any new player race will have to have a light presence in the world already, so their introduction doesn’t require the team to extensively rework existing content to fit them in. That said, I’m sure they’ll handwave new races doing old content as the character acting on their own or something to that effect, but they’ll still have change a few small things for tengu (if only just dialog).

Krait, reptiles, with two lumps that are breasts (and furthermore, wearing bikinis) however makes no sense whatsoever and in fact breaks the style Anet was going with other races (especially since males are naked, iirc).

This is something that gave me pause a little while back, especially when you consider how they handled the charr and asura. To give the krait breasts (which, oddly, only one model seems to have – the other female krait are flat-chested) is nothing short of bizarre. Maybe there’s more to them? Some screens from the first game made it seem like they had plantigrade legs, which none have now.

The most likely explanation is just an oversight creating inconsistency.

Mutiny.4180

On largos and their professions: Guardians have a lot of teleports and pulls available to them, which seems very fitting for a largos if you ask me. Engineers also work very well, since someone had to design their breathers, but also because of all the ambush potential they have. Necromancers don’t seem all that tricky either, since they more or less build little flesh golems instead of actually raising anyone’s relatives (or kill targets).

It’s also worth considering that player characters are always exceptional and individuals.

That out of the way, I’m very much looking forward to this event. My two favorite, currently unplayable, races have a real shot of getting some more development out of it. Tengu are right up in the Dominion of Winds, and there’s at least a few largos likely in the area given the others in Mount Maelstrom, Malchor’s Leap, and Straits of Devastation.

I’ll honestly be pretty surprised if neither race is involved here, and even more surprised if neither features in the first expansion.

Swimming and jumping wouldn’t really be a problem, but some of the skills certainly would be. And, again, we have the issue of armor. Look how that was fitted to charr models. If you don’t think tengu (and kodan for that matter, as slim a chance they have at becoming a player race) aren’t going to see the same result, well I got a highway to sell you. I don’t even what to imagine how that would end up for centaur.

Largos have legs you know. They work just fine on land, as evidenced by several non-player characters throughout the game and even the personal story. Just because they’re more at home in the water doesn’t mean they wouldn’t venture on land.

Kodan aren’t happening. Too many already in-game, no overarching government beyond many tribes that are all structured the same, and very slim customization potential (there’s not even a visible difference between males and females – try selling that).

Player races will have to bring something to the table that isn’t already offered, and both tengu and largos do that very well.

Why would a race that dwells in the deeps, wears masks to work on the surface, and derogatorily talks of land dwellers have wings?

You and I may both agree that the model leaves a lot to be desired (as placeholders often do), but they’re certainly supposed to be fins.

And yeah, that’s pretty much all they flatly state, but I think it allows quite a bit of speculation. Their government is Concordat of Tethyos Houses, which one mentions, “convened and agreed upon set of principles to guide our people”, so maybe they only recently united when faced with Bubbles. Also likely they did that a while ago, and traditionalist houses want to prevent them from joining the alliance.

Lots of possibility there.

Largos have fins, not wings. They swim like rays and glow like the first game’s mantas. Why is this even a discussion?

Tengu are pretty much a guaranteed race, and I strongly feel largos will come with them, given how they’ve been introduced to us. Both races compare with and contrast to one another very neatly. So much that I would almost be disappointed if they missed the chance to play that up in an expansion. Very similar to Luxons and Kurzicks, actually.

The few largos in the world actually speak a lot about their culture, if you talk to them and make inferences. They have everything needed to make a compelling player race.

Here’s something interesting to consider, especially when looking for evidence of internal antagonists. Every largos in-game but one is either named or called a largos. All of them that fight you also only do so until a certain point, at which they go friendly and then bow out. The Unseen Hunter in Brisban Wildlands is the exception to this. He ambushes a group of sylvari, slaughters them wholesale, and then fights to the death.

I can easily see one (if not a few) of the Tethyos Houses being very against the idea of their race exposing themselves like the Order of Whispers has had to (which, btw, have NPCs talking about recruiting the largos). These guys would just want to follow their hunting traditions even as the world falls apart around them. Success or death!

EDIT: Bonus largos concept art. They in-game model is very much a placeholder, imo, like the tengu one.

Will There Ever Be a New Class or Race?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

New professions could go either way, as they’ve said in the past that they tried to cover all the play-styles from the get-go. If something is missing, they’ll add it, but I personally expect expansions to existing classes. New weapons, traits, skill, etc.

As for races, they’ve also said before that the 5 we have now won’t be all there is. How many they’ll eventually offer remains a mystery, but if I had to guess we’ll end up with 8 races and 8 classes. Tengu are all but confirmed, largos seem incredibly likely, but I’m not sure on the last one.

The High Legions & Orders of Tyria

in Lore

Posted by: Mutiny.4180

Mutiny.4180

So we know in the personal story the High Legions offer some support to the Pact by delivering tanks and supporting personnel (e.g. mechanics) – if not other supplies – to Orr, but how do the High Legions really feel about the three orders, especially the Vigil? Consider that Almorra Soulkeeper, was formerly a Legionnaire of the Blood Legion before going on to found her own army independent of the High Legions. It’s also worth noting that when a player charr joins the Vigil, it’s by special order and with instruction from Rytlock (does he really have authority to give those orders to charr from other legions? I don’t remember if it’s cleared with the character’s respective tribune or not) that the character will remain a member of his legion, acting as a liaison between them and the Vigil.

Now, it’s highly unlikely that every charr in the Vigil is there by the same special orders that the player character follows. It also seems unlikely that Almorra Soulkeeper would still be taking orders from the Blood Legion, so are most of the charr in the Vigil’s ranks deserters? The same thought applies to the Order of Whispers (charr members undoubtedly contribute military secrets) and, to a lesser extent, the Durmand Priory. Hell, even the Lionguard might have this problem. Yet, in-game at least, I can’t remember ever seeing even a hint of animosity between legion loyalists and charr belonging to the aforementioned orders and organizations. Is there any?

I guess Almorra’s goals line up with the High Legions’ long-term goals, and she’s at least provided them with support (e.g. in the Fields of Ruin) in several areas. So while I could understand there being tolerance for her and her order, there being no tension between legion and Vigil charr is, at best, unexpected.

I’m also a little curious where Almorra got the funding to start the Vigil. I’m sure she managed to find a lot of skilled craftsmen and masons to build their armory and keep, but that land had to belong to someone before the Vigil took it for themselves. Assuming the order’s initial engineers worked for the greater good, where did they get the materials? Seems a little weird that no one would be at all upset by an entirely independent army staking claim to all those materials. I guess it’s hard to argue with that much manpower (again, how did she recruit everyone?), but still.

As a bit of an aside, how do fahrars actually work? The wiki says that cubs are sent to the fahrar of their legion and forced into a warband, which are made up of charr only from one legion or another. Yet we have NPCs in-game telling us that they chose their legion in the fahrar. One in particular, a Vigil NPC whose name I don’t remember, talks about how she and her brother both joined the Blood Legion and later the Vigil, while her sister joined the Ash Legion and later the Order of Whispers. So, something seems off somewhere.

Should Level Cap Increase in Xpacs?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mutiny.4180

Mutiny.4180

I don’t think the level cap needs to increase. With the current cap and stat allocation in place, it becomes much easier to make new content balanced around that. You don’t need to raise levels to expand the professions, either.

All Colin really commented on was that they would consider increasing it, not that they will. And if they do increase it, then that will happen with expansions. I think it could go either way.

(Largos please! …it’s going to be Tengu, though, isn’t it Anet?)

Why not both?

The first game featured entirely new continents in their expansions, along with two professions and an entirely new suite of customization options for humans in that region. I don’t think it’s too crazy for both largos and tengu to arrive in the same expansion, especially given how well the two compliment and contrast with each other.

We already know they don’t want to add new professions willy-nilly, so instead we could see more level 80 zones, elite content, 2 races, and expansions to the current professions rather than the addition of entirely new ones. Things like new skills, traits, and even weapons (rifles for thieves, maybe polearms and two-handed axes, etc).

Wishful thinking on my part, but I just really want to play a largos. :X

Mutiny.4180

I think this is less a question of which races they’ll add, but how they’ll be added. Tengu seem to be a given, but will they only do one race per expansion? Is there a chance we might see two? Will the expansions take a formulaic approach to their content offerings, or be varied and unexpected? Personally, I hope for the latter.

Assuming there won’t be a mold for them to fall into, I can very well see tengu and largos coming in the first expansion, given their interactions in the personal story and around the world. Largos seem designed with the intention of being a player race. It also doesn’t hurt that tengu and largos contrast and compliment one another so well.

Beyond those two, I honestly don’t know what to expect. Elonan centaurs would be incredibly cool (what other game lets you play as a centaur?), but also incredibly unlikely just because of modeling issues. How do you animate death blossom on a centaur? If the developers aren’t daunted by those issues, then I can see them as a player race.

Kodan, though, seem pretty unlikely. There’s no notable difference in genders, no manes or anything to work into hairstyles, and a pretty limited palette to choose from in regards to colors. Tattoos (e.g. the paint we see on some kodan) would be a big thing for them, but norn already do that. They really fulfill no missing archetype like tengu and largos do.

There’s quite a few sets in the PvP Locker that we aren’t able to fully obtain via PvE. I remember most of these being available in Beta Weekends, but never beyond that. Is this a bug with loot drops or something?

Here’s what may be missing:

  • PvP Masquerade

  • PvP Conquest

A handful of pieces from some of the aforementioned sets can be gotten from the personal story, but that’s not always the case. Also missing from sPvP is the crafted Masquerade set that you often see for Mesmers in character creation.

If this isn’t a bug, then I’m deathly curious as to why any of these were removed from PvE in the first place.

New playable expansion race: Largos

Mutiny.4180

What makes you so sure?

We all know tengu are going to be a player race, but will bird-men be able to sell boxes like deep sea drow will? Imagine if an expansion included both races and played up the two counter-balancing each other. Colorful, honorable tengu and the dark, sneaky largos. A bit of the same contrast we saw with the Luxon and Kurzick nations, isn’t it? I’ll be pretty surprised if largos never surface as a player race.

Either way, the entire design of largos screams player race to me. They definitely have a bigger shot than kodan do, anyway. I’ve gone over this before, but here we go again: existing models strongly suggest being placeholders, they have the possibility of hairstyles, skin, eye, and fin luminescence customization. They can easily fit into any world armor, and the masks give Anet an opportunity to be creative with faces.

Imagine if instead of picking a face like you do with anyone else, you instead pick and then customize a mask. These can be anything from just mouth breathers, half-masks, full masks, etc. Sliders would change the face beneath it, and maybe some elements of the mask itself. Either way, it’d be pretty neat!

Everything needed for a player race exists in largos (see: hairstyles, humanoid shape, gender dimorphism, unique culture and dialect, etc). I’ve also read that Sayeh is voiced by Tali’s aunt from the Mass Effect series, but I’m not sure if that’s true or not. If so, there’s more support in favor of this speculation. It’s also worth noting that they fill the presently empty role of a race that’s dark, mysterious, and stealthy.

Despite there only being 7 in the game, they give me the impression of being fairly active. There’s a lot of areas on the map you could fit a home city for them, and I strongly suspect one in the Sea of Sorrows or Strait of Malchor if they indeed come alongside tengu. Maybe even the Far Shiverpeaks, but that seems a fair bit less likely.

New Playable Races

Mutiny.4180

Largos strike me as the most definite possibility, behind tengu only because of fan demand. Largos at least have a breadth of choices and possibilities when it comes to customization. Patterns and luminescence colors on the wings? Instead of picking a face, you pick between a full mask, mouthpiece, half-mask, quarter-mask and so on. Sliders would control the features beneath the mask or maybe even parts of the mask itself.

They have hair and the possibility of hairstyles, something kodan lack. Differences between genders, being able to easily wear world armor, unique and interesting design options for cultural armor, etc. The only thing I question with largos is how their masks will work once they’re a player race. We’ll have to wait and see, but I’m very curious at the outcome there. I hope they’re for the surface and not the depths!

As far as the story goes, there’s already been a lot of seeding done to plant the idea of largos at least joining the alliance. I’ll be very surprised if they’re never made playable in any capacity. Disappointed, too. Surely the new races they offer won’t all just be spins on one type of beast or another (cats, birds, bears, etc).

Next gw2 Expansion Class?

Mutiny.4180

I think both races, the tengu and the largos will be in the game, but in different expansions, who will be first? I do not know. Maybe the kodan will be in the game too as playable race but i doubt it, I think more of them as a complement race like the krait, quaggan, hylek, etc.

I don’t know, I think it’s a lot easier to write in new races now instead of later. Tengu and largos compliment each other, with tengu being bright and largos dark and mysterious. Largos allow ArenaNet a good chance to expand underwater combat to make it more fun, fluid, and dynamic than it currently is. Beyond the light and dark contrast, one race also looks to the skies (Dominion of Winds, tengu at some point longing to return to the skies, etc) and another dwells in the seas.

I can see them both coming in the same expansion. At least, I really, really hope they do. I don’t want to have to wait two years to play a largos, especially with how much of a tease the largos already in-game are. At least in my personal story, they seemed way more involved than any tengu ever did. Even outside of it, for that matter, with there being mention of largos around Malchor’s Leap helping refugees. There’s also a ton of fun potential for customization with the guys. Imagine picking and customizing masks instead of just a face. Half-masks, mouth breathers, whole masks, etc…

Expansion Predictions

I don’t foresee new classes, but instead new weapons and things to make existing classes deeper than they already are. They spoke some time ago about wanting to have all the play-styles covered from the get go, because constantly adding professions only causes more problems. Maybe we’ll see monks, or paragons to even out the armor availability.

Tengu and largos will become player races, either at the same time or one following the other. I feel kodan are just going to be this game’s furbolgs, wanted by a vocal lobby but never offered for a variety of reasons. Tengu and largos, on the other hand, compliment one another and have everything needed in them to become compelling player races.

Kodan, while a popular choice (on forums, anyway), don’t quite have the makings of a player race yet. For one, you have a very limited breadth of customization options to work with. Sure, they could expand this as they did with asura, but making a race of polar bears suddenly show up with grizzlies or something might be a little jarring.

No manes means no possibility for hairstyles, and their eyes would span various browns and blacks. I’m aware they could decide to change any of this, but I feel like it would compromise the artist’s original vision and dramatically cheapen what everyone loves about them so much.

And, beyond their voices, males and females look no different from one another. Changing all of this to make them a player race would feel, at least to me, very Blizzardesque and a little disappointing. I’m surely not alone in hoping that new player races won’t all be spins on various beasts. Cats, birds, bears… I’d like to see a little more.

Largos feel like that little bit more. For all the fanfare they caused, charr are one of the least played races right now. They look pretty awkward in many armors, so I’m afraid tengu wont’ be very different in that regard. Something to counterbalance the colorful birdies would be very good to have in that first expansion. Something darker, like largos.

The contrast would feel very similar to the Luxon and Kurzick nations. We’re also immensely helped out by largos in the personal story, and there’s NPCs along Malchor’s Fall speaking of numerous largos helping refugees in the area. Note the Sea of Sorrows and Strait of Malchor is large enough to offer room for both races, too.

It all just falls to how big and how frequent expansions will be. Any new races will probably be added sooner than later, because it’d be much easier to write them in while everything is still fresh and flexible. We’ll see, and in my case, I’ll hope that I’m at least somewhat right. That said, I hope those wanting kodan can somehow get their wish someday. At least you have tonics.
