I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”
- Jareth, King of Goblins.
Now, if you can think of any other rune that functions to exclude one class, I’m pretty sure that would be parallel. Perhaps you need to swallow some of your condescension and check your own definitions before you sneer at me.
I can think of MANY that only work for some but not all professions of which the Dev cited one example. But to your specific, excruciatingly narrow definition, Rune of the Guardian cannot be used by Necromancers, while all 7 other classes have access to a block mechanic. Runes are Not for Everyone, whether they work for 1 class, 3 classes (Runes of the Soldier), or 7 classes (Resistance, Guardian).
And yes, the point to be raised here is that conversation between adults requires a degree of acceptance that there will be some verbal rough and tumble. Talking in hushed, harmless tones is something you do with scared children, not your peers. You want to see “the Dev’s not talking nice to me!” BS that transpires on almost a monthly schedule, spend some time in the Black Lion board where John Smith regularly expects people to keep up intellectually. And funny thing, we see a lot more interaction there than many other sub-forums.
As I said though, the real problem is proving the insider trading.
No, it’s really NOT.
The snowflake-ecto loop carried severe consequences based on fairly arbitrary decisions about volume=intent. It was carried out without appeal and without any sort of spying. Behavior revealed abuse and sanctions were leveled. The End.
The best option, obviously, is to close the information leak(s).
A process perhaps quite reliant on the spying you’re certain they can’t do .
Its a lofty goal, but I see it as maybe less achievable than using punitive action as a deterrence.
I guess “grow a skin” applies to player too.
If you think that was blatantly fallacious, then your understanding of parallels may need some work.
In case the message was too opaque it was “Runes OBVIOUSLY aren’t intended to work with all classes. Runes of Resistance will not be reworked to work with engineers any more than Runes of the Engineer will be reworked to be useful to non-engineers.”
I’m sure he’s extremely contrite that he treated the readers as smart enough to follow a fairly obvious parallel. But frankly if the discussion has to be dumbed down that far, I can see why they rarely respond at all.

…And Sigil of Purity, and Sigil of Generosity…
Because if you have the skill and wherewithal to climb the existing personal rewards mountain, you’ll be able to do it again, and position yourself to go even higher when they formally unlock the beyond 50 levels.
Because for every person who is as good at fractals as they claim, it means this is a comparatively minor setback that paves the way to future glory.
Because if you like fractals enough to have such enormous ratings, you should be so excited that your part of the game is finally getting some love that clinging to your old score really ought to be the last thing on your mind.
If they knew in advance, then they are engaged in insider trading. Proving that they knew is impossible without the kind of regulatory and investigative authority that a government agency has.
ArenaNet is not allowed to spy on gamers to find out what they knew and when.
Thankfully this is not a court of law and more… summary… action can be taken.
Mental note- Necro this thread in January to see how utterly absurd it is in hindsight.
-Please tell other posters to refrain from using formatted posts. It was completely obnoxious to see some people make font 50 titles, with huge underscores and uniquely formatted posts, just so their post stood out and took up the most room. I skipped right over most of those.
…
-There were many, many posts that were wall of texts. Im sure you folks didnt have time to read through each post that was 2 or 3 posts long. Maybe come up with some sort of structure for us to get our ideas across. A bulleted list, a question and answer. While some people had some great suggestions, they had some long winded posts that probably could have been shortened(myself included).
You owe me a new irony meter. Because that just bent the needle on mine. We can (and apparently SHOULD) use formatting – as long as its the formatting you approve of. And all other formatting is to be verboten.
When you’re looking for a plethora of ideas enforcing conformity is not a good first step .
So you’re talking about a time delay between completing a renown heart (or event) and receiving the letter rather than getting it instantly?
Sorry, I guess it was two questions (thinking fast ).
1. Can success on a Dynamic Event (not a renown heart) trigger sending a piece of mail?
2. Can you control the delay between a ‘mail trigger’ and the mail being sent?
Bonus question: If 1. is yes, can you send different mail messages/attachments based on the bronze/silver/gold lever of success?
Basically, I’m looking at ways to make DEs more immersive and to potentially mix up the rewards to be more contextual both to the event and to the player’s involvement. Understanding what the engine is capable of would make it more likely we can share good ideas on ways to specifically use it .
I received Storm from a random schmuck Molten Alliance mob during a Scarlet Invasion in Sparkfly Fen.
I’m equally guilty of contributing to the problem, but if we’re going to have a really good conversation, we can’t be giving speeches over one another’s heads.
Which is an interesting point – I tried to comment on other posters and give the occasional shout out to posts with ideas I found interesting. I certainly enjoyed the occasional nod from my peers (before the moderators butchered those posts into non sequiturs…). Still, I think there were a lot of layers that were strictly there to deliver their one post and leave. I’m not sure they even stuck around for the Dev-reply, if any. Its not necessarily a problem that that happens… more an element of the environment. If we’re going to see a lot of individuals on the soap box with little peer-to-peer discussion, then I’m very much in favor of tighter topics/themes and shorter windows of thread activity.
I’m still against hard limits on post length- I’d maybe shoot for a friendlier tone in the opening guidance instructing participants to try and “condense your thoughts and distil your essays to the extent that you are able”.
Thanks for looking into it. I’m glad they are in there – they do break up the bounding and leaping. That said, my female Norn Warrior isn’t terribly ladylike and the one ‘hmmm’ that pings my recognition is much lower pitch than most of the Asuran sounds, as one would expect from about 11 times the resonant body cavity volume . It may be false recognition on my part… but my ear is usually pretty good at picking out familiar voices without visual cues (decades of anime watching
).
Out of curiosity, are the three Asuran male ‘hmm’ sounds separate recordings or a tone shift of a single take? Its quite fascinating the processes you must go through to build the acoustic ambiance of the world and individual characters.
If you don’t like the essential gameplay, sticking around for low-likelihood RNG rewards is just silly.
If the gameplay doesn’t do it for you, I recommend taking a break until the precursor scavenger hunt or crafting is introduced.
Incidentally, does anyone know if having an engineer’s turrets out triggers the Rune of the Ranger set bonus?
There are quite a few rune sets that interact with specific skill types. Rune of the Ranger (works quite well with some Necro builds). Rune of the Soldier is another, keyed to shouts.
If anything, I’d like to see more use of synergistic set bonuses that encourage specialized builds. I’d love to see a Thief/Ranger compatible option that relates to traps skills…
I’d swear my Male Asura Engineer has a single Female Norn guttural sound accidentally cross-linked. He has one grunt I am certain is pulling from the wrong set.
If you can find a reliable way to get that mismatched sound to play, like a specific skill or action, then do tell. Something like that should definitely be fixed.
Further research on my Asuran Male Engineer:
The sound that I believe is Claudia Christian/Female Norn is part of the set that can be triggered by jumping – jumping up and down in place will eventually produce it.
Its one of 3 “Hmmm” sounds (as opposed to the he-uut, yea-aah, aaah, and other jumping noises ). The highest pitched Hmmm sounds like the Asuran male voice actor. The suspect one is one of the two deeper pitches.
Sorry I can’t be more precise. I’m not sure I have the technical language to lead you to it more exactly…

And this…
In the future, please ditch the overuse of caps, as that’s not constructive and reduces the chance that we’ll respond. We read this stuff. You’re not posting in a vacuum.
…Was a low water mark.
These topics, they’re chosen specifically because they are things the player base is substantially unhappy about. If you can’t stand up to a little ALL CAPS in a post about things that kitten people off – that you are categorically ruling out interaction with the folks who are passionate about your product – how can we expect any real dialogue at all? This isn’t high tea and we’re all just soooo civilized. This is something we put hours and days and weeks into and we have a connection to it.
Part of the reason we’ve been including Scarlet in multiple releases is so we can build on her character. It’s kind of funny that we routinely get two types of feedback on the Living World story. From some people it’s, “Stuff feels random. I don’t know these characters.” From others it’s, “Stop using X character. I don’t like them.”
Hello Bobby,
Let me ask a question (in several parts ):
Without revealing future plot twists, do you think it’s possible to comment on the writing process that created Scarlet?
Is the a specific reason the central menace of the current Living Storyline is a she, a Sylvari, or an Engineer? Should we be looking for greater meaning in these choices or was it more of a dartboards and dice process? Do you have inspirations you want to call out? Is there a good story lurking behind how she got her unique ‘hair’?
Is there anything you can tell us that would help us relate to your motives for this character? Something that will let us set better expectations and maybe give better feedback?
(edited by Nike.2631)
Since Tyria is steam punk styled, maybe they should make Kaineng and Cantha even more modern.
Skyscrapers, TVs, trains, etc.So in otherwords, you want Kaineng City to have become Republic City from Avatar: The Legend of Korra? Actually, that does sound kind of cool. Will we get unarmed “weapon” combat and elementalists will be able to become The Avatar?
Though it makes me wonder how angry the charr might to find out that an isolated human nation managed to develop more refined versions of their technology in a shorter period of time.
Also, if they do bring back Cantha, would anyone else want a Fractals rematch with Shiro? You know, just to see how the fight would go in GW2 mechanics. (also, to get his swords. Again.)
I would pay for this product .
3) they ARE reducing AR. “infused” rings will no longer have the +5AR built in… rather, they will already have AR in the infusion slot… what happens to people that grinded the 250 ecto infusions?? will they be given 100s of gold they spent to get them?
Just to put a brief pause on the hysteria, my understanding is the new rings will have the same slot they always did (and your very expensive infusion remains there safe and unharmed) and the +5 fixed bonus of the ring is replaced with a new slot that starts at +0 AR but can go much, much higher in the long run.
So yes, there is a temporary drop of up to -15 AR (5 AR from each of three pieces, giving you 3 of the new unlimited slots)… laying the groundwork to regain not only that 15 AR but potentially infinite AR opening up new tiers for fractal difficulty in the hundreds.
Give more health to our pet. They are our class mechanism.
There is no amount of health you can give to a pet that will allow it to survive dodge-or-die boss mechanics and not break every other facet of the game because the pet is now nigh-immortal.
Big Bucket of Hit Points™ is not a viable solution.
When pets are on passive they give a random Effect to the Ranger for example,
Jaguar = " +5% dmg, "
Jungle cat = " 50% on hit to grant might "
Snow leopard = " Chance to do chill and condition duration increased"
Drake Ice Drake = " attacks do chill "
Drake Salamander = " attacks do fire dmg "
Drake River = " attacks have 20% chance to cause lightning strike"
Drake Reef = " Attacks cause confusion"
Polar Bear = " Gain Vitality and chance to chill "
Brown/ black Bear = " Gain Vitality and toughness "
Eagle / Hawk = "Bleeds are 10% more effective "
Raven = " chance to blind on Hit "
Devourer = " Attacks have a chance to hit twice"
Moa = " Gain Random Boon per 10sec"
Wolf= " Crowd controll are 20% more effective"
Pig = " gain Healing power"
Warthog = " gain precision"
Boar = " gain power"
Siamoth = " gain condition dmg "What do you guys think? they are sort of like Preparations from Gw1.
the pet will always be visible, but not active. soo it stays true to the ranger Bio. " has a companion pet"
just gives us a chance in pvp, pve to not lose efficiency, due to the pet dieing or causing issues
That is a surprisingly elegant approach. Probably doomed because of it, but a great idea all the same .
Spoiler: there was always a rare chance to get them in the 10-20ish. The only change we made was to make them skins so you can apply them without spending a transmutation stone.
There was always “a rare chance” to get Final Rest from the Shadow Behemoth – it just never happened in the lifetime of the game until the fix that made them fairly common.
No one has ever reported getting fractal weapons to my knowledge from sub-20s play. Either that chance was insignificant or the table was broken.
I’m against limiting our tools to debate, discuss, and illustrate concepts with something as brutally arbitrary as a reduced character cap on player posts in CDI threads.
That said, I do encourage all players to spend a moment or two to reflect upon and polish your thoughts in these threads before hitting “post reply”. People are going to read your thoughts here – show some courtesy by making your thoughts readable ! This is a little bit less the “living room chit-chat” that pervades the boards, and a little bit more “open mic on the big stage”. You will be in the spotlight. Bring your best game – you won’t get a better opportunity to shine elsewhere.
My Group is lvl 80 and we are proud of it. Now we will set to lvl 30 with all outher pll that are just 30+. All for nothing and my fractal weapons will drop for everyone up to lvl 10. its a shame. We hoped that they open 50+ and we can try to get fractal lvl 111.
Why all good players get punish. And u can do lvl 1 for 4 gold and good players do lvl 50 for 4 gold? What is that!? Punishing again
If you’re that good, you’ll be climbing the ladder anew with little difficulty, and this time the ladder will thin the riff-raff so your awesome can stand alone and rarely challenged.
I think what people are missing is the old level >30 fractals are GONE. From this point on much more challenging versions have replaced them and your older progress tracker doesn’t apply. beating the old 42 will be a cakewalk compared to the new 42.
looks like it will actually be easier from what was said in the fractured forum
The ‘mistlock instabilities’ don’t sound easier to me, and adding two new boss levels you could get instead of the extremely simple puzzle fight that is the Maw is going to be a bit more lively too in my estimation.
I could see leaving the current levels in place – but mostly because it’d be funny to stand by the portal and listen to the sizzle-scorch-gurgle-silences as groups wipe over and over jumping directly to their maximum level, refusing to pause and learn the new mechanics.
Yes, its a bit baby-buggy-bumper, but it’s probably for the best in ensuring the new material gets used instead of our most daring-of-old rage-quitting after a difficulty 48 Mai Trin hands them their rumps AGAIN and AGAIN on their first run into the new fractals…
I think what people are missing is the old level >30 fractals are GONE. From this point on much more challenging versions have replaced them and your older progress tracker doesn’t apply. beating the old 42 will be a cakewalk compared to the new 42.
Thanks!
No problem .
What do they mean by “Process Evolution” ? (English is not my first language and reading people’s comments make me even more confused since everyone is talking about a different thing…..)
Rather than looking at matters that manifest in-game, this thread is looking at how the interactions between players and developers in CDI threads can be refined – how to get more out of less time and fewer posts from players by giving them better coaching on what the Devs are trying to learn. How to format the threads better so that people who show up a week after its started don’t feel like they can’t post at all unless they read 30 pages of replies first.
For example, the first thread on this board changed direction several times as the Devs gave specific guidance on what they’d like to hear about. This meant after a while responses to the very first post were getting mixed together with responses directed at the 2-3 different Dev posts asking for new topics to be considered. What was already a challenging read because of size become even harder to follow because there were three separate topics pinballing around under one thread.
Basically, before looking into another in-game topic, they want to ask how they can make the Process of talking with us in CDI threads more useful for them and less difficult for us. Evolution of the overall structure.
I suspect “grow a skin” is in my top three. You cannot have individuals with 100% hit rate at responding to approving posts and a <4% rate of responding to critical insights and suggestions for improvement.
Unless all you’re looking for is a rubberstamp on decisions already made.
Stupid question of the day;
What’s CDI?
Collaborative Development Initiative.

This system for generating videos seems rich with potential. Good stuff.
I will experiment and get back to you .
Adorable!
All I can suggest is maybe a little tankier armor? I’ve been running it with a support warrior (sword + warhorn with the fast recharge and condition-cleanse on 4 & 5 has been pretty much a pleasure cruise through the tower) and a regen Ranger and both of them simply outlast the hits they can’t dodge. The place is very forgiving of bunker and support builds in my experience. The inescapable damage of the toxic spore debuf just wrecks glass cannons.
The protector certainly demands mobility as you have to drag targets out of its field to do any damage at all. Can you focus more CC on the brawler perhaps?
Also on the 3 portals encounter, I always kill the mobs then kill the portal and have never had more than one straggler left when the next portal appears – the ‘kill all the portals ASAP’ strategy just leaves me with a heap of enemies active all at once…
“Profession Favoritism” means the favored class reaches the desired target levels of effectiveness in all game modes faster, that the problems of under and over-performance are resolved more quickly and the solutions to those problems are more elegant.
It’s the result of more hands-on experience with the class though play. Its the difference between dramatic, confident changes including those that are perceived as nerfs and timid, lackluster changes even when they are intended to promote a class to a better state.
I think there is a strong case to be made that it’s the difference between the polished feel of Warrior gameplay and haphazard shambling mess that is Ranger gameplay. And the very definite spectrum most players could write in to fill the six rungs on the “Developer attention span” ladder between them.
ROUSED TO RAGE
All Champions have a new buff called Roused to Rage – for each unique player character that attacks them they gain 1 stack of this buff, which provides a small amount of power and condition damage and a moderate amount of toughness. The buff may stack to 25 and dissipates at the rate of 1 per second while not in combat. Player controlled pets and minions to not contribute to RtR stacking.
Champ farming just needs to scale faithfully to the number of number of players present. Make the fights more of a struggle when the kill is going to produce 28 champ lootbags instead of 3…
If they go with armor I expect there will only be a legendary helmet or coat (initially). The hassle of filling a whole armor set makes me want to claw out my eyes in dread.
For a trinket, we’ll almost certainly see an amulet or back item. If the do ring or accessory, the fact we have two each of those slots opens a huge can of worms. Since the want the legendary trinket to impart some sort of visual effect, it’ll be an a slot you can only get one to avoid FX conflicts. And since they want the effect to be unique, it’ll probably be the amulet to avoid competing with people’s fondness for back items they already have. Decide between your Tequatl-wings or a legendary effect… or set things up to not force the choice at all. No contest in my mind. Amulet slot. bet on it.
“Didn’t get enough value” is pretty hard to disentangle from “I want the end goal sooner for whatever I feel like doing.” I get it people cling to the whole play the way you want concept, but its never been realized I kind of expect it never will be.
There are quite a few different things that give karma. But there is a definite intent on the design-side how much and how fast you should be able to get it, and I doubt that basic rate is going to change dramatically in player’s favor. If anything, continuing to disproportionately seek out a few high earning pathways is an absolute recipe for getting those rewards reduced until the Primary method – Dynamic Events – stands unopposed as the optimal route.
In my world view there wasn’t much of a “karma nerf” to begin with. There were a bunch of non-DE routes introduced that directed people way from the core PvE gameplay, and when they realized they’d screwed that up, they reversed it. The essential mechanic: “go out in the world and stab things in an big orange circle” didn’t get nerfed at all.
I take it cruising across a zone, taking in the sights and doing every Dynamic Event you come across is tedious?
Doing the same thing over and over again to try an eek out a 4% gain over the intended rate of acquisition IS tedious, but it’s also self-inflicted.
You’re also getting a 33% buff to base initiative gain. It comes out to just about even, except now you don’t have to spend any traits. As to whether or not this will be a buff or nerf in the end, no telling until it goes live.
Sure. I have a D/D super unicorn and the patchnotes they showed were nothing but buffs to my no-stealth-at-all playstyle on thief. I run a Thief TANK . A big ol’ Norn Acrobatics-THUG.
And you are seriously the posterboy for the problem with the thief class and gaming at large.
I have no kitten idea what you are talking about, and since I know you have no idea how I play, I know you don’t know what you’re talking about either . I didn’t make a judgment call about the changes, I just thought it was amusing that every problem listed was on the Dev’s known hit list. I basically said “Yes, and the Devs agree with you” without any other comment, so rein it in, eh?
Make your case over in this thread where you may actually get a Dev response .

I’d swear my Male Asura Engineer has a single Female Norn guttural sound accidentally cross-linked. He has one grunt I am certain is pulling from the wrong set.
P.s More armour that isnt trench coats.
I like the trenchcoats, they’re awesome. Just need moar consideration for Charr tails plz. Ty.
Lack of choices is never awesome.
…Really?
Because I seem to remember nearly a year of people being HIGHLY competitive about Legendary ownership that conferred NOTHING outside of “looks”.
Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the whole idea of a cosmetic endgame to eliminate the sense of competition between the haves and have nots?
Absolutely not. The ENTIRE POINT of cosmetic endgame is competition between players over looks – with stats being largely equivalent and non-competitive.
I spent 8 months building an Infinite Light instead of pursuing a Legendary skin. While I did so because its a look I liked, there is no doubt that its not intended to show up in the hands of any and every player that decides they want one too.
You have to want it. You have to want it enough to commit to some massive multi-month farming or a not inconsiderable amount of gold-making.
Customers you lose to hype were pretty much gone already. The real risk is more like when pre-orders start. That’s when I’d launch my own big reveal.
I find it amusing you just read off the checklist for what’s getting nerfed for thieves on Dec 10. Ok, the heal on spending initiative is actually going up a little, but mostly in the form of Healing power scaling AND its being moved up to the Grandmaster status it rightly commands.
I guess the Perplexity changes come sooner – I’m hopeful that the term nerf is less applicable and there is more of a correction/sanity check at work here. They added fun. Hopefully they can still be fun without crossing the threshold into abusive. Because ‘adding fun’ is something runes are not doing as often as they could .
Just wanted to pop in and say we haven’t forgotten about this. The good news is the change should be coming sooner than later.
Thanks for your patience.
I can’t help but think you finally made some runes with enough oomph to create valid new competitive builds and then backpedal… while simultaneously saying “We know there are a lot of runes/sigils out there that are ineffectual trash we’d like to bring some value to.”
I just hope the revised Perplexity runes remain potent enough to be interesting, instead of joining the vast ranks of mediocrity still waiting to get that polish.
I’ve made 18 of them (equipped one set of six on a Ranger, go figure) and have the mats on hand for another set. Just waiting to see if the new version prompts the creativity and experimentation the first version did or if we’re looking at another tepid batch of gunk while the Lyssa set continues to define ‘overpowered’.
Technical question: can the completion of a dynamic event be used to trigger the sending of a piece of mail (w/ attached rewards)?
For example, if an event sent you out to protect lumberjacks, could success trigger a letter being sent 30-60 minutes later that said thanks for the help and included some small number of wood planks (“Please take a few of the offcuts. Without you assistance we wouldn’t have any lumber at all…”)
She went to Tixx’s Infinarium to broker an alliance between the plush toys and Moto’s super holo technology. Be ready for her plans will come to fruition this Wintersday.
The Super Cuddly Alliance.
I’d be more convinced that one would actually work than any of the others.
