Ok….I’ll start off with the positive… The STORY itself is better and mildly interesting, but the dialogue and character development is juvenile in the extreme. This group that we are hanging around with is just the saddest bunch of npc’s I have ever had the misfortune to “party” with in all my years of playing MMO’s and RPG’s.

They’re still a ways ahead of Destiny Edge, combat wise anyway. I’ve seen worse NPCs in other games.

First off Belinda. I mean, I wrote spoilers in the title but honestly, who gives a complete crap about this nothing character dying? My only wish was that she took the rest of the no marks with her. Also, how the HECK is that dumb Bimbo Kasmeer supposed to be some sort of super Mesmer? Not to mention the kitten hiccups again. It’s not cool and it’s not funny and it doesn’t make her “speshul”…it’s just cringe worthy.

There have already been legitimate complaints about how stupid and contrived Belinda’s death was, from how predictable it was (save for the timing) to how it happened before we could really get to know her at all, and thus not care.

Kasmeer’s only superpowers at the time involved having barely/no cooldown on her Time Warp/Feedbacks, as well as having a more phantasms out then a player mesmer can do (Countess Anise and possibly Queen Jennah have already pulled the latter trick before as well). If she were a super reality haxor mesmer, she’d summon dozens of Illusionary berserkers to slice all the Mordrem, including the boss, into shreds in a matter of seconds.

(And now I’m going to have the image of Kasmeer going Super Saiyan and screaming for half an eternity stuck in my head for a few minutes. -_- )

Strangely enough, you forgot about Marjory’s bone bridge, or her deluxe sized bone minions that were integral to taking down the boss, or her ability to use Necrotic Traversal without summoning a flesh wurm first. Or does that not count towards making her a super necromancer?

Then there is Braham with his kitten leg. He’s a GUARDIAN for God’s sake…He can’t heal himself?? Either way, I am sick of hearing about it…Never seen a Norn act like such a wimp.

Only Rox continually brings up the leg injury (the other characters might mention it once or twice, but only Rox consistently worries over it), and Braham constantly insists he’s fine, and even if he still has the injury (As Rox implies at the Concordia instance), he doesn’t let it hinder him at all.

Aside from having a slightly silly haircut and being a little bland compared to other notable norn in the past (Beigarth, Forgal, Apatia, and others I can’t name right now), Braham is still okay character wise (aside from being Eir’s son, due to stupid writing), and is by no means a wimp.

Rox is merely relegated to bystander status which as a Ranger in this game, she should be used too I suppose. It’s a wonder they don’t boot her from the group for not bringing spotter and frost spirit.

She still fights alongside the group like everyone else, and only get regulated to bystander partway through the Concordia instance (if you chose Braham to go with you during the search for survivors).

The only character who has any kind of depth is Taimi I guess…but they are doing a good job of making an initially sympathetic character of being extremely precocious and annoying.

That….I will agree on. Right now she’s mainly exposition, as well as being the resident genius/hacker of the group, though it fits for an asura. Still, her actions near the end could have dire consequences later on, so I am wary of her.

The point is, although the plot itself is getting better…the dialogue and the characters are by and large pretty terrible. I’m reading that people are saying Oh Anet I was blown away…Like wtf?? IS this the only game you have ever played in your life??? I say this with all sincerity, Anet could do a LOT worse than look at Bioware games for how to create characters and situations we care about…2 or 3 hours of Baldurs gate has more emotion and empathy in it than the entire season 1 and 2 so far of living story combined.

So for this patch I give it 6.5/10 …Getting better..but..ya Know…

While I don’t have quite the…vitriol (probably the wrong word to use) towards the story/characters as you do, I mostly agree with your concluding analysis. It’s getting better, but still has a ways to go. I have a slight urge to see what happens next (specifically to our character now that they’ve had the “vision” as well), but not much else.

Theory: Anet trying to remove WP for Mounts?

in Living World

Posted by: Nilkemia.8507

Nilkemia.8507

Answer: No. As we’ve seen, Mordremoth seems to be going after specific waypoints, not all of them (specifically ones closer to ley lines), and Taimi’s already working up a way to protect waypoints from getting snared by it later on.

Mounts, while possibly being a neat thing, would be redundant and unnecessary in this game as is.

Although, the Sonic Tunneling Tool/Witch Broom might work as a substitute for that, if you feel like using gems for those… (shrugs)

The mental state of your character at the end

in Living World

Nilkemia.8507

Thinking back to FFVII when Cloud approached a praying Aerith, I wonder if the PC could not be showing signs of mental instability now. We go to see the Pale Tree or Queen Jennah and go off the deep end at the appropriate time.
Aerin seemed fine and didn’t seem to have ulterior motives joining the Zephyrites. His personality changed later.

“Indoctrination” from a certain other series also worked this way, being subtle at first, allowing for the victim to pass off as normal to begin with, but then change on the inside as time went on, passing as just fine one moment only to betray their friends/allies the next.

While part of me hopes getting yanked out of there early stopped whatever got Ms. Invasive Weed from getting us, it’s entirely possible that just going in there was enough for it to link with our mind, and it’s just choosing not to make us go crazy until it thinks it can do the most damage.

Nilkemia.8507

So far we seem okay, but that could be due to getting yanked out of the machine early, as opposed to sticking in it for quite some time as Ms. Invasive Weed did. Still…would be believable for them to show concern/suspicion if we mention getting stuck in the machine for even a moment, knowing what it did to … her.

Then again, how many of the leaders of Tyria even know of the circumstances of Scarlet’s change? The Pale Tree would know, and I’m willing to suspect High Councillor Flax might know a thing or two, but not any of the others.

I didn’t die, but they just sort of… vanished during the fight. The oversized bone minions were still doing their thing thankfully, but Kas and Jory were just gone after a bit and I basically ended up killing it on my own. They didn’t reappear until the finishing cutscene there.

Waitaminute, they were supposed to help more throughout the fight than simply by spawning bone minions and shouting unhelpful tips?! And here I thought Kas just ran out of juice for her bubbles and the fight was hard simply because my squishy little thief can be two-shotted by those wolves and has insufficient condition cleansing to deal with the condi-spamming slime from the Thrasher boss…

Well, Kas tossing down some Time Warps and Feedbacks would’ve helped.

Oh, and since I happened to use a thief as well that time…. try going 0/0/6/2/6 with a pistol/dagger setup and dire/rabid gear. That helps with survivability.

You obviously don’t read the dialogue because it ends up with us discussing how we should talk to the Pale Tree.

One of the last things said in this chapter is, and I quote Kasmeer here, “if only I still had my family’s wealth, I could take her away from all this. Keep her safe. Give her the things she deserves.”

Alas, only we can give her the things she deserves.

. . . better armor skins, and the chance to teach us how in the bleeding abyss she made that bone bridge.

Don’t forget those deluxe-sized bone minions. While we’re at it, we’d better question Kasmeer about how she drastically reduced the cooldown for her Time Warp.

She either had barely any cooldown for hers or none at all, she actually overlapped two of them during the fight on the walls!

Why are you people still here?!

Before anyone says it, yes, I realized just after taking these captures that they’re still there for the story bit when you have to talk to them to reach Scarlet’s Secret Room. Still, part of me has to question what makes them think it’s a good idea to stick around…

First one: You’re standing right next to a vine that strangled that guy! What are you, stupid? Get away from that! Do you wanna get hung too?!

Second one: I like how the bartender’s like, “Meh, I’m ruined. Vines came and killed everybody. Not gonna evacuate though, nope.” I’d think he’d at least be cowering behind the bar, but he’s taking it in stride.

Third one: Never had a chance, poor thing. At least he was probably passed out drunk when it got him.

Fourth one: Those two are apparently going to jump in the well for cover. Not sure that’ll work against vines that are coming from beneath the ground.

How does my character know Mordremoth?

in Living World

Posted by: Nilkemia.8507

Nilkemia.8507

I’d assume that EDs are almost common knowledge, considering that LA was attacked by Zhaitan, nothern Ascalon was crystallized by Kralkatorrik, Northern Shiverpeaks corrupted by Jormag and the frequent sightings of Destroyers everywhere.
Zhaitan’s fall was also a large event that was celebrated almost in every map (Dragon Bash).
And finally, our characters are commanders of the Pact lore-wise, so it is safe to assume that they’re more knowledgeable than the average Joe.

Thing is, most other NPCs we ran into already knew of those dragons’ existence. Mordremoth’s name up until this point was only in the skill name of one boss (Subject Alpha) in one particular dungeon(Crucible of Eternity), with no other references to the creature itself (And you’d never know unless you had the combat info tab active as well). All that could be inferred then was that Mordremoth had some connection to the earth, due to the Teeth of Mordremoth skill utilizing earth spikes. Our character is the first one to say Mordremoth’s name out to anyone else, with none of them questioning where we got it from.

How does my character know Mordremoth?

in Living World

Posted by: Nilkemia.8507

Nilkemia.8507

Yeah…they should’ve at least rectified this by having some information on it somewhere in the Crucible of Eternity (besides the boss’s attacks), or even something in Arah mentioning it.

But alas, we all considered Mordremoth to be the jungle dragon, so they may have just decided to go with it.

Does make me wonder why the NPCs didn’t at least ask “Where’d you hear/read that name from?” when our character mentions it. (I think our character says its name first?)

[suggestion/spoilers] PC's mind affected?

in Living World

Posted by: Nilkemia.8507

Nilkemia.8507

Scarlet made improvements on the device. It’s possible that it’s safe now. There’s a theory on the lore sub forum exploring the idea that Scarlet encountered the Entity before she used Omadd’s device. Even if sylvari aren’t more vulnerable, Scarlet may have ties to the Entity and that’s the catalyst needed to go mad. Without it, the PC is safe.

Ah yes. As Scarlet’s journal from Origins of Madness shows, something was trying to get at her seemingly way before she even went off on her quest to learn everything. It’s possible that is what drove her to learn about ley lines and be obsessed with the inner workings of Tyria.

Still, it’s mostly speculation…

[suggestion/spoilers] PC's mind affected?

in Living World

Posted by: Nilkemia.8507

Nilkemia.8507

I actually prefer the idea that my character’s mind is stronger than that of Scarlet’s. Similar to Mass Effect 1 where you see the Prothean Beacon vision, people keep saying that the images would break weaker minds – but not Shepard, the main protagonist. Well, kind of a similar situation really. Scarlet’s mind was broken – mine was not. I’m awesome, she’s dead.

Plus, if the vision opened way for Mordremoth’s corruption, then with the standing theory, only sylvari PCs should start going looney. But honestly, I don’t see it happening anyways. It will likely be akin to Shepard, and I’m fine with that. Because it proves that I’m better than that storyline wreckage of Scarlet Briar.

As much as I agree with most of the things you talk about….having a stronger mind means little versus dragon corruption. Something gets corrupted, it’s corrupted. While strength of mind/will may be a mitigating factor against forces that try to corrupt mentally first, or ones that tempt you into joining them willingly before corrupting, I haven’t seen anything to suggest having a stronger mind prevents getting corrupted.

We still don’t know enough about Scarlet’s trip into there, and the differences between what she saw and what we saw to specify what in that vision drove her over the brink (although, it probably didn’t help her any that she was already kind of evil by that point anyway. She did join the Inquest of her own free will, after all).

It’s possible that either our characters being yanked out early kept them safe from whatever was looking back. Or perhaps it was just an elaborate use of holomagic to record what she had seen.

Or perhaps whatever got hold of her managed to link with our mind, and simply hasn’t chosen to utilize it yet.

While our character is indeed special in a sense (comes back from death, though as a gameplay mechanic, we don’t really die in the story, being stronger/smarter than the NPCs in battle most times), saying our characters’ minds being stronger prevented corruption…feels a bit silly and Mary Sue-ish.

Talking to the Pale Tree [Spoilers ahead]

in Living World

Posted by: Nilkemia.8507

Nilkemia.8507

Also, when I spoke to the Pale Tree some time after the Gates of Maguuma patch, there was an option to ask about the Elder Dragons, and she gives you a answer similar to Ogden’s book that you find — they are probably a part of Tyria itself, older than we could possibly know.

I don’t recall the whole conversation, but at the end she warns us to keep our friends/loved ones close, saying they will soon be our only lights in a dark world. (seemingly hinting to the events happening right now)

More on topic…Yes, it makes no sense why the Pale Tree wouldn’t talk to us, as out of all the leaders in Tyria, she’s probably the most concerned about stopping the dragons (Or at least she seemed to be regarding Zhaitan), and a dragon that can influence even her offspring isn’t something she’d just ignore.

Besides, we can go see her and talk to her whenever, so I don’t get why the story ended with us preparing to try getting an audience with her, instead of talking to her, then getting ready to warn the other leaders.

People are going to complain about what they don’t like, that’s natural.
Tired of seeing it? Easy, don’t read it. Unfortunately, if you don’t like Kas and Jory, you can’t skip their talking if you want to finish the other pieces of the story.

They are annoying, just like treeboy and Logan are horridly annoying.

Sorry people, this isn’t about homophobia. Though I know someone is dying to say so.

Having an option to skip the cutscene is a valid suggestion, yes.

Until then, if their dialogue really makes one’s ears bleed, they can always mute Dialog volume in the options menu, then go through their inventory to salvage/sell things on the Trading Post until the cutscene’s done, or search up objects of interest on the wiki/forums, or well…anything else for the time it takes for the cutscene to end. So the level of complaining I’m seeing feels…unnecessary.

Trehearne himself isn’t so bad, more how he was thrown into the story with no knowledge of him at all unless one plays the story as a sylvari.

I will agree a Logan being an annoying bookah, however. Heh.

If you dont like the other’s personalities then make your own threads about it, this thread is about unskippable cutscenes and bad dialogue.

The the thread should be named “Unskippable cutscenes and bad dialogue”, hmm? Although, that might not fit, given their limitations on title size.

Stop trying to turn this into something it’s not. Kindly take your straw men elsewhere.

I seem to have hit a nerve.

Although, telling me to get out rather than show how I’m jumping to the wrong conclusion only makes my suspicion stronger. Oh well.

I explained quite clearly what it was about their dialogue in this chapter that bugged me. The answer it right there, in my OP.

Seems to me like these two characters just annoy you, period. Not any of the others.

I got annoyed with Taimi’s Scarlet fangirling shenanigans, and setting us up to get caught in that machine (and possibly nearly corrupted as well), but I’m not constantly making topics about it.

Also, I’ve seen at least another thread or two specifically complaining about KasJory’s dialogue. I’m beginning to think this is less about what they’re saying and more the characters in particular.

The downsides are a pointless character death that was made to make more drama and failed to spark emotion in me (Aside from being a bit surprised at first, I just felt like “Why did they even do that”?). Also, the story ending with us trying to get an audience with the Pale Tree could’ve instead ended up with us talking to her first, and then preparing to warn the other leaders, as despite how they make it to be a big deal, we can just talk to her whenever we want throughout the game, so….

I didn’t die, but they just sort of… vanished during the fight. The oversized bone minions were still doing their thing thankfully, but Kas and Jory were just gone after a bit and I basically ended up killing it on my own. They didn’t reappear until the finishing cutscene there.

Trying to waypoint there (as it reads as uncontested if you’re in another map) causes me to be redirected to Ulta Metamagicals Waypoint, where an unsettling sight looms above. (first attachment)

After treking over there…yep, it’s gone. (second attachment) The vine’s nowhere to be found now, but I have a bad feeling..the one at the entrance to Dry Top is getting grabbed too. And there is at least one waypoint I’ve seen in Lion’s Arch getting grabbed too…

Anyways, the final part of the story so far involves talking to Miner Toska (in the mine, obviously) about Scarlet and the ley line she helped her find.

“You lost?”

“No, I’m looking for a miner named Toska. I have questions about the ley line hub.”

“You found her. That’s what that strange sylvari female called the pocket of magical energy I tapped when I was digging out in the wastes beyond town. You don’t want to go anywhere near that.”

“Maybe. But I’d still like to know the story.”

“I was mining copper and broke through into an inner chamber in the rock. Suddenly a bright light blinded us all. We didn’t go any deeper—too dangerous—but changed the direction of our digging.”

“You told the sylvari woman about this?”

“Yes, and you should’ve seen her light up. It was like I was Tixx and Toxx, delivering a special toy just for her.”

“Where was this pocket of magical energy?”

“Out west of town, but that tunnel collapsed right after I’d told the sylvari woman what we’d found. I’d always suspected she collapsed the tunnel and dug her own way in. You should ask her more about it.”

“Can’t. She’s dead.”

And hopefully she’ll stay dead.

Braham: “I think it’s time to go. We’ve got more important things to do.”

The tame version of “Screw this, I’m outta here.”

Taimi: "You do, maybe, but I don’t. This is the biggest day of my life! Look at all this Scarlet paraphernalia!

Whatever. You clearly weren’t around for the study in Scarlet in the Dead End, and/or going into Scarlet’s Lair underneath the Priory, which is still there and unlocked now. Just as much Scarlet junk there.

Rox: “I agree with Braham.”

Taimi: “You would. Look, you guys can go, but I’m not leaving. I need to document all this. I can use this to write the thesis that will make me famous!”

Braham: “Hm. I don’t know.”

Marjory: “She’ll be okay. She’s in a village. She’s got her golem.”

A village with clear ties to bandits, and possibly the Inquest as well, considering they have a base nearby. The only thing working in Taimi’s favor at this point is that neither the bandits or the Inquest know of Scarlet’s room, as far as we’re aware. But if they do…I doubt the villagers will put up a fight even if they disagree. And Scruffy was already taken down once before by ley line probes. The bandits may not pose a threat to her, but the Inquest certainly could. And if Scruffy’s done, so is she—her bad legs means she’s unable to run from a threat. I like you Marjory, but just handwaving it off like you did does not cut it.

Braham: "I guess it’ll be okay. We’ll be back for you later, Squeak. If you run into any trouble, find a Zephyrite. They can be trusted.

You mean the Zephyrites who are too busy trying to survive and recover their possessions to worry about much else? Besides, one of them lied to us, another went crazy, and the Master of Peace, while seemingly benevolent, was also keeping secrets from us and the rest. Granted, his reasons may be good, but right now, even if the rest can be trusted, they’re in too dire a position to be much help right now.

Taimi: "I will. Now stop worrying and let me get to work.

Rox: “Let’s get out of here, Braham. Between the dust and the weirdness, I’m done. (sneeze)”

Braham: “You be careful, kid. We’ll be back later.”

Marjory: “I’m ready. Let’s go.”

Kasmeer: “Stay out of trouble Taimi. We’ll be back soon.”

And so the rest of the team, including us, leaves Taimi alone without telling anyone about what we just found. Not the Seraph, not any of the other Zephyrites, and not the three Priory explorers who are gathered at the closest waypoint outside the town, who would certainly show interest in a secret room kept by Scarlet, as well as helping protect her and deciphering the other junk in there, as well as checking for any other traps in that room, since part of me doubts an exploding door was the only security feature Ms. Invasive Weed left behind. Taimi would still probably get credit for at least discovering it, and they’d probably let her do the documenting/thesis stuff back at the Priory with them as well.

Right…anyways, we have to talk to Taimi once more.
