And better yourselves! There are no rewards, no chances of winning, and rarely fair fights.

But in this vicious environment of 1:3 roaming combat, DIY upgrades/seige, and outnumbered gang fights, you will be forged into a player of such caliber even the kings of Leaderboardia will fear and respect you.

This is boot camp. This is sink or swim.

This is Eredon Terrace.

[Suggestion] Server Merge for low pop servers

in WvW

NonToxic.9185

Mash the bottom tiers together, keep the middle and top tiers as they are. Give the bottom tiers something to play against that actually feels like WvW without creating the overpopulation problems of top tiers.

Some of you like bottom tier play, are you joking? You like knowing that every penny you put into upgrades will be lost as soon as you log off because you’re the last living soul online? It is fun to have to buy, build, and refresh all the seige you need while knowing that it too will disappear as soon as you log off?

WvW at the bottom tier is a great big nothing. If you happen to be online when one of the 2 guilds are, you get to take some camps, maybe a few structures before a bigger guild shows up and eats the little fish. Win 5 bags and 2 badges, then it is back to dumping your money down the drain trying to make the stuff you have sort of defensible. Not that it will matter, because there is nobody around to use that second arrow cart and the gate will be smashed before you get the ram below half.

When all of the bottom servers have the same coverage/population issues (heck, you even hear middle tiers talking about coverage), the only options are population merges or weighted scoring. If both of these options are unacceptable, then servers like ET are effectively written off. No recruitment blitz is going to convince a Daddy Warbux to stay and fund our efforts, because it only takes 10 minutes of playing on the bottom tier to realize it is a black hole for money. Who wants to grow poor playing this game?

EDIT: My friend from an upper server who will not be named once said to me ‘how do you only have XX gold after playing wvw for so many hours?’ and I had to laugh in his face. Our two experiences are like night and day.

The only time I have seen real drama on ET (in the years I have been here) has been when the actively recruiting guilds start talking of transferring. I wonder why it makes people upset to hear that a hearty chunk of our active WvW players are being poached?

Anything else is imagined or exaggerated.

MegaServers Inadvertantly Hurts WvW

I think the opposite is true, when I bump into all the same people on the maps I am farming ghosts on, I’ll become familiar with them. When I join WvW and see those same people (or some of…), there is an instant camaraderie and I want to help/revive/build with that allied player.

When WvW is the only place with a persistent identity, it will be more popular to new joins, not less. Until they realize that their server’s identity might be the ‘Stomped-Like-Ant’ server.

One of my biggest regrets about my first server transfer years ago was the loss of the guild influence I had earned with my play-every-day launch blitz. Will this new system see all of the guild influence my guild has (now across 4 servers and 6 players) merge? We would finally be able to finish the architecture tree.

Runes and Sigils: Any list of the changes?

With the WvW tourney underway, I want to put a more serious rune set on my main character, replacing the budget runes I got when I hit 80. However, with the impending patch, I don’t know if the runes I buy will still be right for the character in the wake of any potential changes.

Is there any list of the changes so I can make an educated choice? Two weeks is a lot of fighting to wait.

Feels like ET lost all but the two dozen regulars that are on at varying hours. I had no work today so I was online for almost 12 hours, wearing the outnumbered buff for 9 of those hours on multiple maps.

Some clever guy will say ‘my guild loves the outnumbered buff’, but that is spoken when “outnumbered” means something different. We are talking 5 people online in the Eternal Battlegrounds, including the 3 pulled from homeland, trying to stop an enemy push with as many golems as we have people. Still sound like a blast?

There are a number of people in this thread who aren’t understanding how bad some others are. When you run up to get your baby or put out a fire or let the cat in, it doesn’t take you a week to do it.

There are players on Tarnished Coast who have been afk at the blue knight for over a week. The NPCs sometimes rez them, players sometimes rez them, and they enter combat with the menders and aethers around often enough that they don’t ever AFK time out. I could name names, but I have already reported them in-game. Botting was the closest thing.

EDIT: When I say ‘enter combat’, I mean something attacks them and then the other players around kill it. The AFKer doesn’t do anything. Ever.

[WvW] Encountering Cheese

in Profession Balance

Posted by: NonToxic.9185

NonToxic.9185

Yes we all love cheese and love to it eat it.

However in WvW, may be not so much. I just would like to generate a conversation about it with a few questions.

1) How do you personally define “cheese” or what are the characteristics of a build that make it “cheese”?
2) How do you feel about people using these so called “cheese builds” while roaming?
3) How do you usually deal with encountering these “cheese builds”?
4) Which builds do you consider to be the most “cheese” in roaming/WvW/dueling?
5) Do you believe “cheese” is the product of game mechanics and/or class imbalances?
6) Any other comments, suggestions, changes you would make?

I will give my answer if this topic generates enough conversation.

1)In a WvW context, I think what is cheesy is a build or strategy that, in any other game mode, would fail completely. Stealth spam builds don’t work in PvE because the mobs can reset and require more damage, they don’t work in sPvP because the enemy can cap for points while the stealther sits and regens, but in WvW stealth spam can be the most powerful strategy. Stealth is a strong offensive weapon and a great defensive tool, but in WvW it is both at the same time. Stealth spam with maxed guard and bloodlust stacks? Gimme a break.

2) I can’t stop them, and I have been on the internet long enough to know it is going to keep on trucking. There is no honour in the virtual world.

3) It depends. I am ranting on about stealth here, but it is a good example so I will stick with it for the whole post. If I am on my necromancer, and I run into a heavy stealthing bloodlust+guard stack thief, I take my hands off the keyboard. I’m going down, I’m not getting to a gate or downing the thief. Cripple, bleed, crit, whatever the angle may be, I am kittened. The necromancer is not specced to 1v1, and especially not against something this strong. My guardian on the other hand will eat this thief for breakfast with retaliation. So usually the answer is ‘accept my fate or flee’, nothing is cheesy if I stand a chance. If I don’t stand a chance I’m getting out ASAP or dead already.

This goes back to my #1 point, the cheese is that if the thief finds my necro he gets a free bag, if he finds my guardian he falls on his face (or more likely, realizes he can’t instagib me and cloaks and runs).

4) ‘Most cheese’ is to me sorta moot, something is cheese or it isn’t. Confusion builds are a big one, the lesser moaned about is torment. I #$%^&* hate torment in WvW, the game mode is so built on moving that a few stacks of torment can decide the encounter (on a class without much cleansing power). Glass builds themselves are not true cheese (I had retaliation on, you killed yourself, ha!), but a glass build abusing stealth, confusion, and torment would pretty much be my worst nightmare. I don’t think such a thing exists though.

5)It is a product of class imbalance AND game mechanics, but not in the conventional sense. Going back to the example of my necromancer, he is a great help to my team in group fights, especially defending. He has skills and traits that help him do that, he is good at his job. If I want this necromancer to STOP dying to every moderately strong thief in the game, I have to choose to steer his build away from being the helpful supporter. In this sense it is a product of game mechanics: I want to play a support, but still will need to run for supplies every so often. When the necro gets picked off by a thief once again, the thief is doing his role too. He isn’t a supporter, he is a kitten-off-enemy-supply-runners.

6) This is how it is when trying to balance a game over 3 modes. It was a lofty ambition, and we are seeing it suck hard in reality. Would a party of 5 guardians be a threat in sPvP? No way, most of your team can ignore them and cap points. But a party of 5 guardians in WvW is suddenly a juggernaut of might, swiftness, and stability marauding the countryside, and though your team can work around them, it isn’t the same as sPvP where their antics will probably cost them the game. Those 5 guardians can camp the pants off of a camp or tower and be a real pain while the other 40+ members of their team do work elsewhere.

Simply put, I don’t think this game will ever be truly balanced across all 3 modes. sPvP is pretty good right now in my view, even if somebody is abusing a strong mechanic like confusion it doesn’t mean they will win the match. But in WvW, getting killed multiple times by a confusion abuser means a lengthy walk back to the action, no loot, and sometimes an armor repair bill. The cost, consequences, and objectives aren’t even close to equal across the 3 modes; how in the blue heck does anyone think the balance will be?

Block second hand sales

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: NonToxic.9185

NonToxic.9185

Let’s travel to a world with a TP that blocks duplicate items, stacks sales fees, and is otherwise rendered unusable to the flip crowd…

dream sequence

I have just gotten a third Yakkington’s pants drop. One I have equipped, the other I sold, this third one I can salvage, destroy, or vendor. I salvage the pants. I am left with leather I don’t want but can’t sell (already sold my one leather on the TP), a rune I don’t want but can’t sell, and some mats. I deposit the mats and go to do some crafting. I have enough mats to make two Carrion and one Knights hats. I make them, I can now sell one Carrion and one Knight hat on the TP. The TP has 4 Knights hats listed at 40g apiece (because there isn’t a ton of Knights hats being sold any longer, so this specific hat becomes much more uncommon, and thus, worth WAY more) and 6 Carrion hats at 20g apiece.

While waiting for somebody to buy my really expensive hats, I try to decide what to do with the other piece of Carrion gear. I must salvage it, for the vendor value is far below what I would have to spend on the TP for mats (since selling fees stack, nobody sane is selling stacks of mats any more because it loses money). The resulting mats are almost enough for me to craft another piece of gear, but I can’t afford to buy any of the missing components off the TP because my super expensive Knights hat has yet to find a rich buyer.

/dream sequence

Whatever your opinion of flipping may be, a world with a crippled TP should be an obvious nightmare. Everything would become MORE expensive because it is more scarce. Trying to buy anything as a lowbie would be absolutely impossible. Instead of a disparity between rich flippers and poor mob farmers, you would instead see a TP where nobody can afford anything. Want to run the Frostgorge train for a few hours to afford one or two ectos?

All the prices would initially fall (from the initial super inflated first-posting price) because somebody, somewhere needs to get gold, but the second one person actually sells a precursor or brings some gem-to-gold money, the ridiculously expensive items would sell and suddenly there is a market created at a level where 99.999% of players can’t pay.

I don’t even wanna think about what happens to gem prices if gem-to-gold is the only way to buy anything.

Immobilized for what seems like hours

Is Anet ever going to cap immobilization stacks to something like 5 seconds?

Being unable to move for 15 sec when your fighting 1 vs 3 is far from pleasant.
Am I wrong to think that when a player cannot move for over 15 seconds in a video game something could be wrong with the gameplay?

It used to be somewhere around that, till one clever guy at anets office thought it would be a nice idea to make it stack, so they did, can put on stability but still getting immobilized, fun fun.

hurg yeah I forgot about that. Terrible idea to make it so that a skill in a game can prevent another player from playing it for such a long extent.

Do YOU want a season 2?

in WvW

Posted by: NonToxic.9185

NonToxic.9185

Absolutely not. The season structure meant that people on our server would practice up when it meant nothing, then every guild, commander, and player would jump ship to a server with a better chance when the season started and there were rewards to be had.

Now, nobody trusts the guilds to stick around. There used to be a seige donation system on the server, but I certainly don’t donate anything anymore after seeing a commander transfer away with some 100+ ram blueprints I gave him ‘in prep for season 2’. Forget that. If a season 2 happens, everything/everybody good will once again get sucked away into a top tier and once more our server will get stomped into the mud, outmanned on every map. A season 2 would drive me away from WvW altogether.

The Queensdale Train

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: NonToxic.9185

NonToxic.9185

If you are dying to the level 4 theif mobs on the way to Bandit, you are not who the train is meant to assist. You should be doing hearts or story quests until you are a level where you are not too handicapped to run the train properly.

I take a mesmer on the train regularly, with Blink and Temporal Curtain it is not tough to tag all the champs. If you are unable to keep up with the train, you are not using the correct items to be the most efficient and you are not who the train is meant to assist. The train is for powerfarming, if you want some casual levels that’s cool! Sit at boar and go to troll afterwards and you get a couple of events with time in-between to smoke a cig or scratch your butt. You can benefit from the train without impeding it, and that is what most people fail to realize.

It is not a matter of -me- dictating the pace of the train, there is only one pace. Run all the champs and get all the tags and pick up all your loot in one cycle, that is the pace. The people dictating pace are the ones who don’t bother queueing waypoints or having the right gear or skills. You want to drink some water and slash dance? Cool beans, that doesn’t mean you should create a situation where the whole train has to wait for you. Sit out for a champ, don’t start the next one early. EVERYBODY gets more loot if the train is running at max speed. EVERYBODY gets less loot when it isn’t. Ideally you want to be sitting at each champ, waiting on the respawn because the zerg blew through the cycle so fast it is a race against respawn timers.

The most frustrating thing is when people skips champs and then call out the next one. Great, now Oak is dying while the real train is at bandit.

tl;dr The Train isn’t as fun as many other parts of the game, the only reason to ride is money. And you lose money by being inefficient, so it seems doubly silly to me.

The Queensdale Train

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: NonToxic.9185

NonToxic.9185

I like it when people say their server ‘does it differently’ or ‘we skip X’. There is ONE most efficient and cost effective way to farm on the train, and almost no server does it. I have guested around to many servers to try and find one where logic guides the train, but I have not found one that remains on the logical path for long. The train exists to provide the fastest and most efficient farming, yet for whatever reason laziness and pigheadedness often win the day.

To start with, Boar dictates the train. It is the only champ that should ever be waited for (huge zerg killing everything too fast is an exception), and as such, SHOULD be the last stop at all times. It should not always be the first stop. For example, when SB spawns, people will often go to boar afterwards. WRONG! You should wipe every other champion that is up before going back to boar. Of course, you might not know which of the champs are up, but it is easy enough to hazard a guess based on where the train left off to go and fight SB. Arrive at boar after wiping all the remaining champs and there will be no wait, removing opportunity for a derailment or snipers. This resets the train nicely instead of the typical hour of arguing and partial trains following SB, yet nobody does it.

Troll should always be followed by bandit. The majority of servers skip bandit for no reason, which is puzzling (this goes contrary to ‘most efficient farm’, because it is a missed champ and additional time spent waiting for boar). Bandit shouldn’t be waypointed to if it follows troll, walking there is simple and, contrary to the only argument I have heard, does not slow the train down (a train that walks to bandit still must wait for boar).

Oak is EZ, the only thing that troubles Oak is the sniper.

Spider should be done before boar so only one waypointing is required.

If Wasp is up, it should be done after spider but before boar. Wasp is on the longest respawn cycle, so killing it ASAP is the most efficient way to farm it. Not after boar, not ‘next round’, ASAP. Why make yourself wait longer for the loot?

Of course, all of this is worthless, because the most efficient way to run the train is ruined by lazy players. One person waypoints to bandit while everyone else walks, part of the walking group doesn’t get their tag, then next cycle EVERYBODY waypoints. Cost added, efficiency down. SB spawns and half the group goes to clear Oak before killing boar, half the group goes straight to boar and kills it (then whines that Oak is not up when they get there). Next cycle, everybody goes to boar after SB, Oak is sniped, the train waypoints to it uselessly, efficiency goes down.

This post is sterile and lame, I know, I just can’t figure out why anybody rides the train yet wants to only do 3 of the stops, ruining the efficiency for all the other players. If you’re gonna partake in boring powerfarm, do it RIGHT. The same thing has happened to the Frostgorge train, there is the most efficient way and then there is the way everybody is forced to do it because of snipers and ignorance.

EDIT: I should add that this is not directed at anyone within the thread, rather trains in general. One server I found (it will remain unnamed) only did Boar —> Troll —> Oak —> Boar. A fifteen minute cycle for 3 bags and 4-9 pieces of loot. What is the kitten point?

I have a spotty connection, so getting disconnected while I’m playing isn’t a rare experience. Usually I get a 7:11:and:so:on error, but sometimes I get this error telling me another client has connected to gw2 using this account.

I can log back in no problem, so I don’t know if there is any cause for concern. The first time I saw this, I changed my password immediately (completely unique password not found on any of my other accounts). Now, I get the error (seemingly) more frequently, and I would just like to know:

Could this error be solely related to my spotty connection? Maybe when I lag out so badly that the game is forced to reconnect, it instead just boots me to character screen as another log-in attempt. The account doesn’t seem compromised, all my characters and gold are untouched. The log-in page of my account still says it is just my PC logging in. I ask because I want to stop changing my password if I don’t need to! (password changes have not stopped the error)

Inequality in attacking level

in PvP

Posted by: NonToxic.9185

NonToxic.9185

Yeah, I don’t know of a more eloquent way to put that. Essentially, attacking from behind a short wall (like the destroyed wall of the clock tower in Kyhlo) or below some stairs (keep of Niflhel) onto a platform at a different height is advantageous for some reason. It seems that attacks originate from higher up on a character’s model than where an enemy’s attack would be received, so the player behind the wall can attack anything without being Obstructed but cannot be attacked.

It happens with some rocks and other props as well. Not normally a problem, but every once in a while you get a ranger sitting behind a short wall, totally immune to your ranged attacks. In my view, this should be a two way street. Either the player behind the wall is Obstructed to other players and other players are Obstructed to them, or both should be able to attack.

I might accept that being on a higher elevation is supposed to be advantageous, but on the keep stairs, it is the player who simply hides his knees below a couple of stairs that is lower and advantaged.

[Brainstorm]Ways to increase stream views

in PvP

Posted by: NonToxic.9185

NonToxic.9185

I think there is a deeper difference. Many of the people I know who watch MOBA or other streams (myself included) do so while doing something else. Every minute of gameplay isn’t make-or-break, so it is something that can be flipped to when the action heats up. I can check my bank statement and listen to the commentator. GW2 isn’t like that, WvW has enormous stretches of downtime and sPvP has almost none. A WvW stream is often dull because of the build-up to real action (for a viewer, watching a supply run is Zzzzz), whereas a PvP stream requires way more investment because of the constant changing action. If you flip away from a PvP stream and flip back, you have missed way more than flipping away from a few last hits in a MOBA or a scout dying in an RTS. You lose context very quicky if you leave the stream for any reason and it becomes noise.

The killer is that instead of investing myself 100% in a stream like that, I would rather just be playing.

I click very hard because I have fat person hands and an rts obsession, every mouse I have tried breaks in about 4-6 months. Then I found the razer diamondback and used it for years! That thing was a tank. It did die eventually though, and I replaced it with a ton of other mice on the market that all died fast. After getting sick of driving to the store and using the returns desk, I bought a razer deathadder 2013, which was more expensive, but has lasted 8 months now, almost double the average of the other mice. Specifically this model of razer has survived, the diamondback is no longer made and I broke the naga and the abyssus or whatever the heck weird name it has.

I broke the darkglider you have listed but have not used the other two, neither is a recognized name in quality mice (from what I can tell, coolermaster makes a lot of budget cases and such but you can’t break those!!). I really recommend the deathadder. I thought I was paying more for the brand like Nike, but there is clearly something good about it because it still lives.

I agree with Mosharn… You guys were good on week 4 because you had everyone on the game still thinking you could win the league. At week 5, you fairweather base gave up and you lost most of your number (thus why your week 5 was horrendous).

Numbers dictates this game. No tactics can win a matchup against a server that can easily overwhelm you.

In other words: ET can even try Blackgate tactics, but if SF just come and zerg us with big numbers and no tactics at all we’ll still lose.

I’m really glad you learned to express your opinion, and Imma let you finish, but SF manhandled your BL yesterday and you should get better instead of whining about it.

After getting together all 6 able-bodied WvW players, we tried for 3 hours to take back any of our keeps, but your blob of 40+ would track us down and wipe.

Switched to your borderlands, where us 6 once again tried to take a camp and then a keep, but it turns out you -also- have a 30+ zerg on your borderlands!

Took the 6 to Kain’s border then, and took some camps before finding out that even with the numbers you have in the other two maps, an entirely separate guild is rolling around Kain’s with 20 dudes as well.

Numbers are tactics, and thus, you are the superior players.

Except I was roaming around in SF BL majority of the night and we could barely muster up a force of 10-15 to defend anything. I think CoSA came to home BL for like…. 45 minutes before they left again? Of course they came after we called out the 20-25 ET zerg that capped the entire south half of our BL plus hills and NE tower when we were nearly empty at home.
They did make quick work of those guys though.

Either you had terrible timing or you make some funny jokes.
You did make me giggle though.

P.S: Shout out to SOL and OBEY. Had some fun brawls with you guys last night before bed. I was the [Ash] Charr. Hope to see you guys more often.

So one instance of us getting people online and taking some things for, what, the 2 hours before you crushed it again in 24 hours of trying to play all day.

Either you are deliberately missing my point, or the other 22 hours of the day don’t exist. This is -exactly- why the low pop. sucks, we have a window of 10pm to midnight where people are actually online and we can do anything.

From a different thread, but it highlights exactly why this is frustrating (in response to someone telling us we suck and they are tactically superior):

After getting together all 6 able-bodied WvW players, we tried for 3 hours to take back any of our towers, but your blob of 40+ would track us down and wipe.

Switched to your borderlands, where us 6 once again tried to take a camp and then a tower, but it turns out you -also- have a 30+ zerg in your borderlands!

Took the 6 to Kain’s border then, and took some camps before finding out that even with the numbers you have in the other two maps, an entirely separate guild is rolling around Kain’s with 20 dudes as well.

Numbers are tactics, and thus, you are the superior players.

When our whole borderlands is taken by the enemy, they only have to hold three locations: north camp and the two towers next to the garrison. They only have to hold these three because when the map is taken and the progress stops, all profit leaves WvW and with the profit go the players. There is no recourse for these 6 players, they are never going to cap the garrison or take a keep unless the enemy server goes to sleep (and we must sleep too…).

Now that we’ve been rolled this bad in the early days, nobody is going to log on, and I don’t just mean the casuals. I play a boatload of WvW, but if I can’t take anything more than 1 or 2 camps in an hour, I will do fractals or dungeons instead. In the situation I described above, I made no money, I got no crafting materials, I didn’t rank up, nothing. There is zero incentive to stay and fight back. Outnumbered’s boosts don’t benefit me if I can’t ever -get- XP/money/gear drops.

Maybe more people will be online today and we will get something temporary done; maybe it will stay like this all week.

If a WvW thief doesn’t hit kitten the first blow, I know he has a gibbled cheese build and will be impossible to fight. Point myself towards the nearest base, press R, then use the auction house because I am in no danger.

Sometimes I pop into WvW, ask EB is anyone is around, then all 3 borderlands. Staring into that wide, empty space from spawn I open up the WvW Season 1 achievements page and sigh.

I get this error very often, and it sounds that you, like me, have checked the network a bit to know that the problem seems unrelated. Try instead deleting your local.dat file in appdata/roaming/guild wars 2. Boot the game up, you will download some stuff. If the problem is fixed, hoorah! If not, close the game, delete local.dat again, start up, download. Do this over and over until you can play, repeat this process if the problem comes back. A pain in the butt? Yes, but I think it is worth it to finally get a problem-free gaming session in.

The re-downloading seems to be the key, whatever piece of data we have that is corrupt or missing gets repaired and the problem goes away (until, of course, another patch or local corruption or whatgremlinshaveyou returns, I have had this occur many times since beta).

7:11:3:191:101 is a fairly wide-spanning error though, so this still may not help you!

On the 7th I had my email changed on me, filed a ticket, and waited. I got Lancebot’s automated response, which was no help, but on the 5th day (today) I updated the ticket with a reminder that the ticket was still open and that I was a sad little boy without an account. They promptly restored my access, and I have since changed the email and password and re-enabled the email authentication step at log-in.

On the actual account, whatever party took the account didn’t take any of my gear or items, but only the 2 silver I had on me (pales in comparison to the amount I have banked). This hacker was a silly goose! All is now well.

Be sure to read all of the instructions on the page dedicated to what to do if you have been hacked (http://en.support.guildwars2.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9212). I followed this to a tee and am now back at the reigns.
