Swiftness not adding time

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Nretep.2564

Guardian’s staff swiftness pulses multiple times (each second). If you already have swiftness it adds 1s, so while standing in it it does not lower the total duration.
If you don’t have swiftness it adds 8s (+ 0% boon duration).

If it’d give you 8s each tick, you’d simply stand in there and wait all 5 pulses and get 40s of swiftness.
Mesmer’s focus #4 is worse since it doesn’t even give you one additional second of swiftness. But it doesn’t add to existing, because you could forth and back multiple times.

As I said in the last statements.
Illusions directly inherit/ copy your power. If they get might, nothing happens, since they strictly copy your power. If you get might (+ 25 power/ malice per stack) your stats change and they immediately inherit the new value (live).

Just remember

  • Might on you → affects both
  • Might on illusion → nothing
  • Fury on you → affects you
  • Fury on illusion → affects illusion

Stat increasing Sigils ignored by Phantasms

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Nretep.2564

Illusions directly inherit:

  • Power
  • Precision
  • Malice/ Condition Damage
  • Toughness
  • Healing Power
  • Critical Damage
  • Condition Duration
  • Boon Duration
  • “On hit”- effects from pre cursed armors

They do not inherit:

  • Vitality
  • + x% damage
  • + x% critical chance
  • “normal” “on hit”- effects from runes, sigils or traits

Inheritance means they have the same value as yourself. Even if they get might, they’re stuck with your power (/ malice). Even if you get Fury, illusions only inherit precision.

Ascended weapons and condition damage?

(0.05 * Condition Damage) + 42.5 per stack per second at level 80
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bleeding

Ascended grants 188 major stats and 134 minor stats instead of 179/ 128 for exotics. So you get additional 9/ 6 condition damage.

Zerker gets bonus weapon attack AND bonus power (and precision and crit damage).

Power VS Crit Dmg

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Nretep.2564

Nretep.2564

Grumpy used an old formula (well, old thread), but he also calculated it wrongly. He added 100 power to the base damage … let me redo the formulas …

The currently assumed formula for most skills is:

  • baseDmg = wpnAtk * statPower * skillCoeff / statDef
    Ofc, weaponatk, statpower and skillcoefficient are from the attacker and statDef from the target.

Critting equals (50% + crtDmg) bonus damage (on crit) as Grumpy explained. The formula for avg damage stays:

  • targetDmg = baseDmg * (((50% + crtDmg) / 100% * (crtCha / 100%)) + 1)
    Where critdamage and crtchance are taken from the attacker and are values in percent.

Now I have to compare the power addition to the crtDmg addition to check which is higher. Assuming you use the same skill with the same weapon at the same target the formula can be shorted to:

  • dmgCoeff = (statPower + addPower) * (((50% + crtDmg + addCrtDmg) / 100% * (crtCha / 100%)) + 1)

So you need the “old Power”, “old crtDmg”, “crtChance” and the adders to compare the values.
The formula looks is similar to grumpy’s, but you don’t use the attack value, but wpnAtk * statPower .

I assume the statcombos were runes, not prefixes.

Condition damage is a joke.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nretep.2564

Nretep.2564

If you focus your build on conditions (mostly necro, or stone scepter ele), you deal a less damage than zerkers. But at the same time you can do other stuff. You can kite the mobs, the conditions still tick. You can build toughness. Zerkers live of pow, prec, crtdmg, conditioneers only off of malice (and conduration, which can’t be on the same piece), so you can get other stats there. Those defensive stats will lower your D/S but increase survivability (well, toughness aggro …).

Some mobs are immune to some conditions. Main damage come from bleeding where I haven’t met immunity yet. Problems are buildings. You’ll miss like 85% of your damage here and it is noticable (had a bleed mesmer). My necro is a condition/ well/ siphon build, which still deals some damage on them, but well …

But when you have two conditioneers in your party, they’ll hurt each other. The cap just makes them a joke. Having a single one in the party isn’t wrong. Poison lowers healing and epidemic is wonderful in alot situations.

I also fell in the trap “oh, so many numbers, I must be dealing alot damage” once, but I’m still not completely going berserker.

TLDR;
Having a conditioneer in your party doesn’t hurt the party. Can be more usefull than a third warrior in alot cases. But having more than one is wasted.

[Guide] Where and When to Reflect

@Harpy FotM – preboss
unfortunately reflects don’t work here. not only not reflecting, but also not blocking. However, block projectile effects work. The three I know are pWarden (untraited), smokewall (thief) and Whirling defense (ranger axe 5). Since you already said that untraited pWarden works and I know that smokewall does, that seems to be the explanation.

@harpy FotM – harpies
every focus mesmer knows that the TC reflect just sucks. You really need to learn howto use it, and even then it’s still a bit gambling.
As for arcing projectiles (like harpies’ knockdown), summon the TC directly at your feet and it works. I once did that shard with two mesmers (they are better than guardians there …) and we just fell once.

@dredge FotM – dredge preboss
I know you can’t reflect or block the attack (scepter #2), but can you block the projectile like harpies preboss ?

@dredge FotM – dredge endboss
the bombs can be reflected, but they disappear. When FotM was new, you dealt some awesome damage with those.

@Ascalon FotM – Endboss
When the endboss uses the conjured GS, you reflect its standard attack (I think), but it’s risky.

@Sorrows embrace
on all dredges, be sure to have multiple reflects in your slots. You can even reflect the mortars.

@Ezzy
Yeah, alot things can be meleed, even from my list, (didn’t know about twilight arbor, ) but you still need to go range a bit of the time and/ or you need other party members to support you and/ or you need others to range the boss so you can melee. Any of those parts does give ranged weapons a pretty valid reason. I’m not saying sword is weak or can’t be use on them, but a sw+x/sw+y build only relies on your group on those.

You seriously fight tentacles with moa morph only ?
The ascalon fractal’s boss can be meleed, but having two guardians with 2 sources of group-aegis is completely different to mesmers BF. Aegis beats invul on random instagibs. And as you can see, the guardian also keeps his distance in 40% of the time, so the 30% (if it were true) more damage from the sword is obsolete again.
The swamp fractal’s tree works in the perfect partysetup and with mesmers you need to be lucky with the pWarden spawn locations, but it usually won’t work.
HotW1’s boss has a REALLY heavy whirlwind. If you’re in melee, you’re dead. BF might help often, but once missed, you’re dead. And don’t expect the whole party to BF at the right time; aegis doesn’t help. And the time you’re ranged, it 0 damage. The + 30% damage from the sword is completely useless if you’re risky in melee range and need to step away 30% of the boss time.

I also melee the most time, but I never use melee weapons only. None of my characters.

Not very often. What I can think of off the top of my head are the ice elemental in snowblind fractal (not necessary, but it helps once you have to kill the elemental spawns for aoe), the ascalonian fractal boss (again, 1200 range isn’t technically necessary, but it makes things a lot more smooth), and either of the final bosses in the dredge fractal, where you’re constantly running away and want to keep up the pressure.

Edit: Lupicus too, almost forgot about him.

Well … to expand your list

FotM:

  • Asura – golem boss; if the whole party went melee, you’d not only lose alot D/S due to running, but also health by its poison.
  • Swamp – Mossman & Tree
    Tree CAN be meleed, but is still risky. Not to mention killing its minions while staying in melee range.
    Mossman …
  • Hammer – Boss, Fire part & two sides part
    I sure wanna see your whole party with only melee abilities to do those.
  • Dredge – Boss
    Preboss can be meleed and other parts don’t require fighting. But either final boss needs to be pulled, which is not possible in melee only. Or you lose like 90% DPS.
  • Ascalon – Boss
    Are you fighting that guy in melee range ?
  • Volcano/Shaman – Boss
    Preboss can be killed with melee, but it’s awkward to get downed every 5s due to lack of stability. I doubt it’s way more effective than switching weapons with GS/ Staff.
    endboss might be possible, but pretty awkward due to large PbAoE and immobilizing tar elementals. You’d lose alot D/S.
  • Jade Maw
    The tentacles can be meleed, but I sure want to see you kill them within your 4s stability time.

Basically every shard (exc ice, swamp-tree and underwater) of FotM require longe range fighting (to be effective).

But well, anything fine as long as you don’t go FotM … wrong

Bosses:

  • Tequatl
  • Jormag
  • Golem
  • Fire Shaman (some phases)
  • MegaDestroyer (usually in lava; possible when everyone’d melee)
  • FireElemental

Well, just don’t do 40% of the bosses.

Then dungeons … I haven’t been in dungeons recently. I expect every eliteist to be able to run CoF1 blinded, since that’s the definition of “elite” and “more effective” nowadays. So I suppose you can melee on the full path.

Let’s try

  • Twilight armor – any boss
  • HotW1 – boss
  • Arah

Signet of Midnight’s CD has been reduced a few patches ago. Looks like noone bothered to update the wiki.

I use it while running. So when searching for GuildBounties or gathering stuff. The + 10% boon duration (+ 30% from runes and traited focus) do help a bit with swiftness. But + 15% or + 20% would be a bit fairer. But for using the utility for this purpose only would make it even more useless than it is … so I found another one.
JadeMaw. I’m usually the player, that collects the crystals from the tentacles. Two dodges are fine, but a blinder or stunbreaker (next to blink) does fill the endurance gaps. And at jade maw there ain’t much useful utility spells anyways.

It’s sad that your thread got hijacked by the anti-GS-fraction.

As of my experience, I’d advice you to start with the GS or Staff. But you already did that. Learn the boss mechanics and play a bit around (probably even with traits).
The only necessity in dungeons (next to “unlock all skills”) is the focus and a ranged weapon.
If you feel like it, test out the sword (MH) on normal mobs and then on bosses. Mesmer is a pretty squishy class (mid HP, low def), but shines when you use all evades and vigor and simply learn where to move to not get hit. It’s something you cannot be taught; you’ll have to learn it yourself.

Once you’ve done that, ask for a specific build with specific weapons (default weaponset, as mesmer needs to switch often) instead of “give me a build with skills, weapons and traits I usually don’t like”.

Nretep.2564

I haven’t tested formulas in this game yet (seems like I got even lazier …). I always find stuff to do in GW2. But I try to get the general mechanics/ theories remembered by the forums.

@Byron
There was someone who claimed that the + 5% crtCh does affect the illusions now. Not the full 5% were added, but he got more crits with it. I assume Pyro hasn’t acknowledged it (yet). I’m also still curious about it, but there’re better sigils for me anyways.

@pyro
maybe some skills follow your formula

  • dmg = wpnatk * power * skl_coeff / defense_

(defense or armor?)

Since the weapon_attack has a variation, it directly affects the damage. But without that (steady weapons), it’s always the same. Yet, phantasms still do random damage. That means they have their own part of weapon_attack, which is not independent from the mesmers weapon_attack (as pyro said).
Then there’re skills/ abilities, which use the attack (sub)stat from the player instead of wpn_atk * power. Attack = f(max(wpnatk),power)_. In those cases, their damage could be calculated

  • dmg = wpnatk + power * skl_coeff2 / defense_

Maybe phantasms use both of those formuals ?

  • phdmg = phatk * (wpn_atk + power) * skl_coeffP / defense_

and since ph_atk and skl_coeffP are equal, you could use a coefficient towards the atk with variation …

difficult.

Berserk deals more damage in general. It’s a pretty balanced prefix.
While Berserker deals the same amount of damage as Soldier on non-critable targets, it’s far more fragile.

Assassin might be on par with berserker, if you have lots of “on crit” effects with low cool downs and are not capped my multiple players. So on various situations they might be equal … But once you hit immobile world bosses, assassin’s is one of the weaker and still fragile prefixes.

Saying “they’d die to fast otherwise” wouldn’t be solved by denying criticals but by increasing HP and/ or Defense (level). Increasing Toughness basically does the same as disabling crits. Direct damage lowered, condition damage maintained.

Well, you have to separate some those creatures/ objects by their mechanics, not just the color of their name or just naming them “objects”.

Trivia:

  • Normal targets’ names are red
  • Normal targets can be critted at and can be inflicted by conditions
  • Any targets may be restricted being critted at AND/ OR being inflictible by conditions. Either doing, makes them “anormal”.
  • Anormal targets’ names are yellow
  • Buildings are immune to conditions, but vulnerable to crits; making condition builds obsolete and berserks useful
  • World bosses are immune to crits, but vulnerable to conditions; making condition builds really useful (not at numbers …) and berserks obsolete.

So simply labeling them as “object” doesn’t help.

Hint:
