I got it to working… after meddling with regedit/firewall to no success, a pal told me to rename the gw2.dat file into gw2.lab so that it’d make a new one. After that it kept on crashing on patch loading… but it didn’t start the patches all over again so maybe 20+ crashes and 11gb later it downloaded everything and the game works. :’)
Hello good citizen of Tech Support!
I have a slight problem. I deleted my gw2 few days ago and attempted to re-install it, but first of all it just said “Cannot install: contact support”. I read that if you rename the install file to GW2.exe it should work and ’lo and behold; it did. Expect that it freezes middle way and gives me bunch of error which I send forward to tech support.
Because GW2 worked fantastically for a year until I removed it, I suspect it has left some files on my computer which is screwing up the new install. My question is; has anyone else come across this problem? Were you able to fix it somehow? I’m thinking about trying ccleaner or similar program but I rather not if someone happens to have a nicer fix.
And yes, I run as administrator, I have 30 gb space, I don’t have ssd, I have tried restarting my computer and I have attempted several runs on the installer.
“Alts are you, but you are not your alts”.
A lot of the rewards are account bound (daily chests, laurels, crystals), but we also get a lot of character restricted things such as armor, fractals/storymodes and wvw progression.
I’m mostly annoyed that there’s not many things that really compensate having alts. Overall it’s just a bunch of negative things, when you count the worth in money/time.
The only positive thing that comes to mind is that you can put your lvl 80 alt to a daily JP chest – which is kinda pointless because the rewards are just blues and greens usually and you’d have to keep the character there rendering it quite useless in the end.
Naturally I made alts because I wanted alts – I like having the variety and even if I need to pay in money and time for them, I don’t mind. But I also don’t think it’s very fair at the moment. I don’t think we should get daily rewards on all alts because that would be unfair to others – but I do believe we should have more account bound things if anet is going to treat every alt as the same person. Possibly even things we can copy to alts like how we unlock the achievement gears.
If the TP mining pick would have been unlockable like that I would have bought it in a heartbeat. Currently it is just worthless to me – I switch between 4-5 characters on daily basis and running in and out of bank for a mining pick just isn’t going to happen. Nor am I going to pay individual ones for each of my characters (which would be 7200 gems currently) – that just doesn’t make sense either.
Overall I wish there was consistency to anets logic. Either the alts are different characters that each get their rewards and penalties… or they’re the same person, who gets the same rewards and penalties.
I agree that zerker is the best gear in game and that after you’ve learnt the boss moves, it’s the only reasonable gear for anyone to take.
But… if you’re a casual/play with casuals, you play for fun and variety and you’re not a min/maxer, other builds are viable too. There’s a lot of people who don’t mind if their dungeon takes 30mins instead of 15 mins, as long as they enjoy it, because they’re going to go through maybe 1-2 dungeons in a day anyways and it’s much, much more about the experience they have rather than how fast they can do it.
If you got a support/tank build of some sort in the group, you’ll notice these sort of groups are a lot more fun when you can keep everyone up and going instead of soloing the whole thing yourself (which is just awkward).
I would also like to point out that pretty much every player that went into the mode of “I’m going to learn the kitten out of this game” that I know of, quit the game in maybe 2-3 months because in the end the game doesn’t have very much content for hardcore pve’rs. The game isn’t very complicated to learn in the end – I personally would suggest rolling whatever class you want and enjoying the other aspects of the game, if it’s possible. I don’t say everyone should… I clock about 1500 hours as a casual player currently, and I’ll admit to sometimes tasting the hunger for blood when a dungeon group fails and I find myself trying the solo the kitten out of that dungeon for few hours…
Well, my point pretty much is that berserker is the best set for players that know their dungeons, yes, but it’s not the only viable set. You can get through content with other sets as well.
Edit: And yes I think it’s OK that you take only zerkers to your dungeon groups if you’re going for optimal output and kicking them in case they lack the armor you required – just like it’s OK for casual dungeon group to require others to have manners and being able to kick for the lack of them.

… because whenever you’re choosing your character, you’re annoyed since one of the achievement thingies isn’t golden.
That’s a sad, sad reason….OCD checkup may be in order.
As good as any. It’s just an item, like the rest of the things you could buy with the money you could get from selling it.
… but I have 9 characters, from which 5 are lvl 80 with exotics and few of them have ascendeds. They would probably all be lvl 80 with exotics/ascendeds, if I didn’t spend so much on making them look pretty. I also happen to have so many alts, because not only do I like having different looking characters that I can buy different clothes, I enjoy the different playstyles and frequently switch them in dungeons.
However, I do realize that it is also something I chose.
I don’t believe just because I like my alts to be pretty or want a special stat set, I should get it automatically just because I have more characters. I’m fine with getting a set that works decently for them – and if it doesn’t, I’ll just work more to get one that is more interesting to me. To me it just makes more sense that if I myself choose to have multiple characters, equipping them also should take a little extra compared to others – since they do have obvious positive effects also such as leaving them on JP or getting tokens easier.
I think you’re completely ignoring the effect it would have on people who opt for 1 character if people with alts would get the gold gain as well. In most cases people would just create alts so they can switch it on dungeons, then use the gold for 1 character, there would be immediate inflation on gold and you would be again weeping because some people use their 8 characters to get 1 character have all the cool things, while you’re still left equipping your own 8 characters.
If it’s dungeon tokens, which are account bound, they will not mess with the normal currency used (gold), and they will be efficient for people with alts as well. I suppose it would be fair if they added those stat combinations to dungeon sets though.
I think the gold reward should be account bound, so that you get the normal reward once per account per day… but the tokens rewards should be character bound, so that you can get 66 piece for each character you play the dungeon with.
This way you can gear your alts more easy, but it won’t be completely unfair to people with just 1 character. I think this would be doable with 2 chests; one with the tokens and one with the gold. Just make the gold-one account bound and the token-one character bound.
What if dungeons don’t have the skins or stats you’re looking for? What if you’re running the dungeons for money to afford to buy the skins/stats. Then you’re still held back and must take many days to do what you should be able to do in far fewer.
To me that sounds more like something you do for fun, not out of necessity since you don’t need to be pretty in order to be useful… and if I remember correctly there’s only 3 sets that dungeons don’t have (x-mas set, the new crystal set and the karka set). In my opinion the tokens should be character bound, because they will let you have good, basic exotic armor so that you can be useful for others in group.
The problem is that if you do get gold, which is a currency used for most things in this game and not account bound – it influences other people, you will automatically be in a better position than other players who opt only for 1 character.
… because whenever you’re choosing your character, you’re annoyed since one of the achievement thingies isn’t golden.
I think the gold reward should be account bound, so that you get the normal reward once per account per day… but the tokens rewards should be character bound, so that you can get 66 piece for each character you play the dungeon with.

I think your problem is more so that you try to get the reward as fast as possible and find every other method difficult to accept, because they have s bad gold/hour ratio. I suppose you feel that you need that new shiny thing ASAP to enjoy the game… but then you controversially keep destroying your enjoyment, saying that the faster you get it, the happier you are.
Remember – the reward is there only to make you happy. How you got that reward usually enchants it’s satisfaction value. Instead of valuing things in gold/hour ratio, I think you should value them in satisfaction/hour ratio. When you find whatever you do enjoyable, you’ll soon notice that things just sorta drop into your lap (because that’s how human mind works – sometimes minutes can feel like hours and hours like minutes) and looking at them makes you much, much happier than when you grinded for them.
The game is not here to offer you shinies, exp and bunch of online items… they’re just fabrication. The game is there to offer you entertainment and satisfaction. After 5 years when you’ve moved to another game, the most precious thing you can take with you is not a legendary, ascendeds or minipets. It’s the tales you can tell forward and the memories you have.
I don’t think it’s supposed to be an easy thing. When I started playing GW2 and people still partied at lvl 35 to do that dungeon, it was challenging, it took time to plan encounters and it made you learn things. I’ve seen several lvl 35-60 players that had cunning plans how to get through the dungeon without ever reading wiki or watching youtube videos… and I learnt from them to think creatively.
These days people seem to get discouraged and quit if they get a wipe, usually blaming it on the lowest level. They don’t understand that it’s still just a lvl 35 dungeon, we’re overpowered for it at lvl 80 by stats only. Your stats are just helpful to make the encounters shorter and your new skills will cover up your mistakes, but in the end you can’t get past hodgins if you don’t know how to dodge gravelings or run behind a pillar or drag him safety into corner.
I’m not sure if it’s good for casual, new players. I know I’m pretty casual and chill, but I enjoy difficult encounters and I usually become better from having to think how to get through them. New players will probably feel discouraged by this dungeon though which will contribute to them quitting… instead of making the dungeon easier, I think anet should make the tactic-planning more visible. Like REALLY talk the newbies through LoS and their skills. Make the npc’s comment things like “oh so many spiders! Maybe we could drag them behind the corner…” or “oh look! My reflect skill seems to work well to these spiders” and then the NPC would cast a reflect similar to guardian’s skill.
hell, maybe even make the NPC walk through all sort of different tactics through the Storymode. Like you’d have to follow him and he’d work things out for you. It’d likely inspire new players to work their own skills in exp modes.

I like guardian because it was very easy character to level up and get to learn the mechanics of the game. Later on it provides a lot of ways to make your dungeon runs successful. Mine might not make the best damage, but I can tank-kite enemies, help people run through difficult parts, cover up some mistakes (my own and other people’s) with aegis and generally people like to listen to guardians and follow their lead because they think of them as their personal cannon fodder… makes it easy to pace the battles. Likewise since I have to keep everyone else in mind, I’ve also learnt to see the strengths and weaknesses of other players and what happens in the battle (versus my previous years of playing DPS or occasional healer), which makes it easier for me to pinpoint where the fight goes wrong and what we could try next time to do better.
I like mesmer because I can pretty much stay back and nobody really notices what I’m doing, I got fancy GS skills, I can provide support to others, it has more interesting battle techniques and no Cofp1 party of mine will ever again get stuck into rolling stones.
5 females, 4 males. All races.
lvl 80: guardian, mesmer, elementalist, warrior, thief
less than that: necro, ranger, engineer and second mesmer.
I’m trying to avoid getting too many of them. In my previous game I had like 10 accounts and 30-40 characters. In that game the equipment usually wasn’t account bound until later years though… most of the time having more characters means a lot of work and very little rewards, although making and having alts is most certainly a lot of fun.
Pop-up when I enter that asks “You’re entering WvW, would you like to turn off /map, /say and /team now?” and a pop-up reminder to put them back on when I leave wvw. Preferably in a calming blue color and a relaxing sigh-sound.
Seriously though more micro-managing would be nice. I like it how in wvw maps you get events and it’s sorta like pve-map, but with pvp… but even more events would be nice. Some that we could solo would be great – it would give incentive to stick around even if there’s almost no one else in the map.
Lord of the Rings is a bad example i think, personally, destroys the concept of fantasy in my book, when Legolas slides down on a plank of wood and shoots orks….
Not to mention Gandalf is not a tipical fantasy “wizard” or “mage”. Since the world of the “Lord of the rings” is special in the theme of magic, unlike other fantasy worlds.
But i get your point, and agree, thakittens not the hammer that makes the warrior, thats is what i am trying to say is actually…If anet makes a warrior that has a rifle…why cant it be more detailed?
It truly feels like “it can use it, thats all”.
Tolkien basically made the fantasy genre. Gandalf is THE most typical wizard you can find, anywhere. And I don’t mean that he “made” the fantasy genre because LOTR films are popular… I mean that they were pretty much the first fantasy books out there.
As for your original problem, I find it hard to contribute much. You seem to want a range class (aka. something that doesn’t have to take damage from monsters) that is complicated to use, but doesn’t require too much micro-managing and you dislike some classes because they don’t look cool enough (like thieves and their bows) or are not possible to use all scenarios.
I’d suggest sticking with a warrior and trying to get over the fact they’re called warriors, while ignoring randoms requesting you to use 2h-sword.
I also think it’s kind of a stupid idea to give the players who play 24/7 to become better at this game… something that makes the game even easier than before (making them even more bored at the game), while the people who really would need them (casuals/newbies) can’t have them because of the farm they will require.
I suppose ascended armor would be kind of OK if it was account bound and it wasn’t any better than exotic armor, but had just more agony resistance.
It’d be kind of interesting though if it also had some sort of negative effect compared to the positive… say 5% more crit damage, but also 5% less health – something that would add a layer of difficulty and reward.
I pretend my salad-head elementalist is a very sarcastic person and plans on world domination outside the scenes. The amount of naivety and niceness he shows in the personal story just can’t be honest.
I’m an altaholic with 17 chars, so I guess I suffer from multiple personality disorder?
(I have 8 level 80s, one of each profession and I try to play them all equally)
Hello, I’m Astral Projections and I have multiple personality disorder.
HI ASTRAL!
Hi Astrals! Hi Mojowalker! nice to meet you.
I’m Onis, I have five lvl 80 characters, and 4 other slots with lowbies… I got all classes + races, half are female and half are male. Lately I have been tempted yet to buy another slot, even though I can’t afford to clothe my current ones. :’(
Being polite and liked =/= good at communication. Being polite and nice is just a good way to get to people listen to you and to be patient in trying to find a middle ground.
I’m not trying to say you’re the bad guy here or even that horrible at communicating, but… well. If you have this many people that don’t even understand your original point, you say you’re not an evil elitist while everyone is “painting” you to be one, maybe, you know. The problem is in the communication? If you can’t communicate the point you’re trying to make across and a lot of different people are constantly talking about things you never meant to discuss “in a wrong way”, the problem could be in how you represent them?
Personally, I would consider making a new thread/changing the original post with a different tone and look what sorta effect that would have to the discussion.
I am going to repeat myself with a bit more details and accuracy. i really want you to understand what contrast I see between racism and elitism: [/quote]
After all the nice explaining he did, you still miss his point. Communication. Please, learn it.
I’ll try this the other way around.
In communication skills you’re currently like a good support elementalist trying to go to CoF1 speedrun. You can use words well if you have the time to explain yourself and you have put a lot of thought behind them, but your build is completely wrong for a forum speedrun. If you want a cookie cutter build for communication, learn to be polite. It won’t really teach you how to communicate, but it’ll get you through life.
Edit: It should be 50% responsibility for both people in discussion to try to achieve a good communication. You can’t have a discussion if the person listening is shutting his ears and singing loud… and you can’t have a discussion if the person talking refuses to talk. When both does 30% and 30%, you get a bad communication. When it’s 80% and 80%, you’ll get great communication. Sometimes communication just doesn’t work out because words are not words like we read them from the dictionary – it’s just that as humans we agreed that they have a certain meaning. They still have a unique meaning to each of us. Sometimes you just need to accept that in order to reach a better communication with other people.
Edit2: Not that anyone minds if you do go to forum runs. We’re not communication elitists, lol. Well… unless you go with the build “I dramatically quit this game because of X” or “I’M SELLING GOLD”.

Lack of life. I tried it once, the graphics were great, but there was never any sorta rewards, the story sucked and pvp was completely unbalanced.
I chose GW2 over other mmo’s though, ‘cause it has so many things to do, the gem store/RNG ain’t that bad and lot of the male characters are pretty much fan service.
I’d like dailies to be easier to attain, something like 5/15…. but I’d like monthlies to be harder. Something like 10/15. I currently get about every second day dailies done, I don’t really consider them that much fun… I like to do one thing at a time (fractals today, JP tomorrow, wvw the day after that) and not jump around from one thing to another.
However, I usually get monthly done in 2-7 days, I rarely have to even do anything to get it done. s:
Go for the drop or buy it. Use the taffies for the food buffs and chests for weapon tickets.
I think it’s great that anet has provided us a way to get the wings in other than just as RNG drop (I really do), but just think about this for a moment:
You need 100 000 taffies for the wings.
You get 1 taffy + some chests from monsters. Let’s assume you get 2 taffies per monster that you kill. This means you need to kill 50 000 monsters. Let’s say the wings have 0.05% chance of dropping (which is also my guess for the rate). I would say it’ll take around 2000-5000 monsters to kill to get them. If it was 0.01% chance, it’s still likely you’d get it with 2000-20000 monsters. If it was 0.1%, it’s likely you’ll get one with 500-2000 monsters.
5000 monsters might seem like a lot, but it’s really not That much. Just run around in events like Modniir and Orr, you’ll likely get like 500 kills in a day with not much work. I run around doing those + dragon events to get rares and a better chance at precursor.
… yes. I played 10 years a game that had drop items with 0.01% chance to drop. Generally speaking if you played 3 hours a day at the same spot and you killed a good amount of monsters (which you needed for the exp/hr rate), it was likely you’d get one of those items in a week or two.
In the end however I learnt that rather than consume yourself with exp/hr and items and money, it’s more important to focus on having fun. The more fun you are having and the less you are focused on having a need to get any new thing that your game company throws at you, the more it feels like the items and stuff will come to you without you even realizing it. Nothing kills exp/hr ratio worse then throwing your monitor out of the window.

@Torpian,
Oh my gosh! Really? I’ve never been this amazed by anyone anywhere. You must be so much better than I am. I watch youtube videos all day long about those things and spend my time with nothing else than wondering how I could drive my car better than anyone else in the road. It’s where I get my joy of life. Being better than others at driving. I know my workplace associates hate me, ‘cause I’m already better than they are at it. Sometimes people stop and stare at me on the parking lot, being all amazed at how precisely I park my car. It’s like always right in the middle of the parking lot. I hope that some day we can be buddies and watch the same sky, sing songs and pick up girls like the elite that we are.
But for now I’ll just go back to my dark, dark cellar to read books + read online tutorials on those things, because I just don’t deserve to breathe the same air as you.
tee hee. <3

I can understand why some people feel that elitists are not liked and people don’t really appreciate good skills. However, from my experience I would say that often times the “good players” tend to have a bad way of expressing themselves.
On many occasions I’ve seen the “more advanced” players tell newbies to get better equipments while on a dungeon run, which usually indicates that the newbie doesn’t care about his equipment… while it should be pretty obvious the newbie is there, in that dungeon, to get himself some equipment. Often times they just show a lack of understanding of what it is to be “new”.
Overall it’s often the tone of the text these elitists use, as if the newbie was there purposefully making the dungeon worse by not wearing better armor. In the first post I’d say people are reading the same tone. For example the sentence: “People do not want to see or be aware of the fact that some players can be more skilled than them” shows that the OP lacks understanding of others – instead of wondering if the fault is in him or giving any deeper thought to why people react as they do, he simply puts the fault in others.
Likewise he continues to insult other people’s gamestyle by saying “stale and boring gameplay additions rather than diverse and challenging content”, adding that: “the ’amateurs” have no such dreams, worse: they do not want to face the fact that being better is possible".
If you can’t go halfway for other people, they rarely do it for you either.
Well, I rather like this. Last time we had RNG item that didn’t drop at all and it cost a lot of money to get. This one drops at the world maps, but you can also collect candies to get it. The drop rate can’t be that bad if they are selling at about 50g each. It’s not something that I’d say you can grind on your own, but it’s still possible to buy ones – which is nicer than them being only a RNG item.
Likewise we DO have something for the casuals – there’s the ripped wing version + helm that we’ll get from achievements. Likewise if you’re just willing to let go of the need to have every achievement/item in the game, it’s likely you’ll make some gold as a casual, since you can sell the chests.
While this event doesn’t help the newbies in a direct way, this gives a reason for old folks to roam the world maps again. There’s still a number of us who don’t mind stopping the grind and go help someone get a skillpoint, events like Modiir will likely be much more lively now etc.
“People would still request you to post your gears and kick you out if you don’t have what they want. We’ve all seen that this happens in other games with DPS meter. It’d be just that extra elitism it brings – you’d be kicked out later for not having enough DPS in case you do stop to res someone.”
First off, I’ve given arguments why people would not care about gear if they had access to dps because gear is only POTENTIAL dps but dps done in the past is actual dps. But even if this were true, having an official link to your past performance would fix this issue, as it can legitimize your claims.
dps meter actually SOLVES for elitism because instead of people being denied based on gear, they’re now denied based on dps, which is better for reasons explained in the OP.
Actually I was responding to that particular thing you said. Just because people will put more importance on how good your DPS was in the past, it doesn’t mean that the amount of elitism will be the same or less. I still say it’ll be worse than before. Currently I think a lot of the elitists take in a lot of people who aren’t Really up to their standards. In return these people will get their exotics and learn to become better at the game. If we did have DPS check that you can link later on, the focus of elitism would just change to a different place.
In my opinion it basically doesn’t solve elitism, but makes it worse.
Personal DPS meter should be good enough. It should help the min/maxers, groups can decide if they want you, you have the choice of telling them (just leave out the pinging which basically would force you to show what your DPS is like pinging gear does) and you can start ranking people by DPS rather than equipment.
I also think DPS meter belongs to games with Trinity system.
In general we don’t want people to focus only to DPS. I’m willing to say it’d be good in places like Cof1 where your survival is dependent on your DPS, but in general dungeons I’d rather see people ressing than casting just whatever that makes the DPS meter go a little bit higher.
And let’s be honest here – DPS meter wouldn’t solve elitism in any way. People would still request you to post your gears and kick you out if you don’t have what they want. We’ve all seen that this happens in other games with DPS meter. It’d be just that extra elitism it brings – you’d be kicked out later for not having enough DPS in case you do stop to res someone.
It’s starting to be more of a rule for me to transmute my exotics to low level armor. I like the simple look. I suppose my guardian could do better without the skirt, but I really like the form.
I tend to run with flashy/skimpy outfits on magician types though. :‘) Since I think of them mostly standing around and waving a magic stick, it makes sense (to me) that they’re more about their image than clothing efficiency.
(edited by Onis.2418)
Honestly, this really does NOT work for low level players. I can freeload on events, but at my level upped to 80, i’m pretty much useless in there :(
heh, don’t worry about it. :) It might feel like freeloading, but usually any extra on fight is a good thing – in GW2 everyone gets their own loot and exp comes from finishing events. Just switch to range and throw in some AOE’s and try to res people if you see them.
Also a lot of the achievements are about collecting stuff and talking to NPC’s. If you can get past the mobs, you’re well on your way to getting the event items. I suggest going for the flower – it’s a level 80 item, but it looks pretty and it’s decently easy to get (it’ll probably take around 1-2 hours to find all the spots).

+1 for Agent Ihan and Sayeh al’ Rajihd.
I think countess Anise has good style going on and the voice acting is great… but her personality is kinda meek – I kinda wish she had some other personality trait asides “sexy”.
^Thank god.
I have all the other achievements expect this – and randoms don’t even bother answering you when you ask for their co-operation or someone is afk or something. I’d really rather have achievements for something I did, rather than hope that others fail at the game.
As someone who has played mmo games for 10+ years, I feel that adventure box is the turning point for GW2. I personally feel it’s the thing that sets it different from any other game. GW2 has a lot of great mechanics, good animation, storylines, it’s comfortable to play etc… but one thing it lacks is being unique. Being named as the sequel of another game doesn’t really help. My current view of GW2’s most prominent feature is that it’s comfortable and fun to play. I’m looking forward to new events – although even if they stay the same, I’d still be content with them (I loved the snowfight pvp on christmas – and I usually hate pvp).
The SAB, however, has been the one thing I’ve linked screenshots to my friends that don’t play mmo/hasn’t tried GW2, because it’s unique, it’s funny, it’s something that other games will not have. WoW sometimes has had similar things, like the flowers & zombies thing, but even then they’re very small and not very well done. The SAB instead shows a real effort and you can see the team really wanted to make this thing alive.
As dungeon it’s somewhat lacking in content – probably because the team size is so small. The farming requirement for account bound items is also incredibly tedious… and there’s the problem of graphics clashing, but I think they managed to make it enough much look like crazy asuran techonology thing to get away with it. However, I do agree that if in future we get lots of clashing graphics mishmashing, it could make GW2 look like Perfect World, which is… not a good thing.
My hawt, handsome devil sylvari elementalist turned out to be a wimp, my scaredy cat warrior turned out to be very very high self-esteemed princess, my dark apathetic necromancer became a high aristocrat savior hero.
… I hate the storyline. I wish they had kept the character lines void or given different choices for voice acting. The voice acting has good quality, but what do I do with quality when it’s not serving purpose at all? As for NPC’s, pretty much everyone loves my characters and sends them coins when I finish a quest.
On a sidenote, I think choosing ferocity/charisma/dignity also affects how your characters say their storylines. It’s very, very small, but I’m pretty sure it’s there.
