People contributing a loss of players to Borderlands and Torchlight is hilarious. It says a lot that people compare GW2, which is supposed to be an MMO, to those single player games (that have a group option).

LOL no it’s not. I used to think the GW community was great, but the community starts with the company and seeing how Anet has behaved since the launch of GW2, my opinion of the GW community has soured also.

Believe it or not, EVE has one of the best communities in gaming.

Server pops can be adjusted and that little login screen has said “Full” on my server every time I’ve logged in the last week. Thing is, I can’t find people on the map, I do events alone (the few that I can), the TP in LA is mostly empty and the Mists are mostly empty. If the server is actually “Full” it’s sure not as full as it was three weeks ago.

10 things that GW2 did better than WoW

1. Is a great system in GW2, I agree.

2. Is tied to the whole “downed” system borrowed from Borderlands (if it was in another game previous to that I missed it). It’s not comparable to WoW because WoW doesn’t work that way. I have no preference between straight dying in WoW or being downed with a chance to come back in GW2.

3. I disagree with this. I don’t think the vast pools of XP gained from crafting are a good thing at all. People getting to max level without actually playing the game is never good.

4. No, damage is not always avoidable in this game. In fact lots of dungeons and events have unavoidable damage. Lots of damage in WoW is avoidable too. The ability to dodge is cool, but that doesn’t mean you can avoid everything.

5. I don’t see how this matters at all. As far as targeting and LoS goes in GW2, they’re both awful, buggy and vastly inferior to WoW.

6. I’m not convinced no trinity is a good thing. It would make getting groups faster, but Arena Net is against pugging for some reason so that’s irrelevant. Dungeons feel like an unorganized mess and the overall group gameplay is sloppy.

7. PvP and standardized gear in GW2 is better. Now if only the controls, targeting, cameras, variety of options (like profession colored name plates, pet controls, etc) were as good. Since the controls are terrible, PvP is terrible. Controls make the game.

8. Level scaling is the biggest waste of time in GW2. Challenging low level content for the same low level rewards. Even when you (seldom) do get a piece of gear close to your level, it’s below you and vendor trash. Awful system and one of the reasons I’m not playing GW2 hardly at all anymore.

9. I’ve never had a problem with loot systems in WoW and don’t have a preference between the two. But the GW2 loot system is decent.

10. This one makes me think you’ve never even played WoW, or at least not in years and years. There are several currencies and ways to get/buy loot. You get what you earn. Ya, some stuff you’ll have to wait for a drop, but how is that different than any other game? In GW2 you have to fight with the DR system to get drops to craft your gear. You’ll get full raid gear before you can farm up mats in GW2 with the DR.

All that said, there are many things GW2 does well. Some things it even does better than WoW. In the end, however, WoW does more better than GW2 and the first thing, one that affects everyone, is the controls. Controls are VASTLY superior to this game. If you make the best game in the world and then put terrible controls in it so it’s a pain to play, you just made a bad game. All else becomes irrelevant. Other systems, like the lack of a DR when farming, currency systems (to buy gear) are better in WoW, social systems and guild systems are better. GW2 is pretty, has a unique way of questing (no, it’s no dynamic) and enjoyable combat (or it would if the cameras and other controls were better).

Thank you this is excellent info. We would like dungeons to be legit hard enough to take closer to 45 mins but if we can’t accomplish that goal we can look at the speed clear times from non exploiters and easily adjust the system. The goal is that hardcore farmers don’t even see this thing but only exploiters. We will keep working towards that goal.

Being efficient in dungeons means less reward?

Oxe.6142

Plain and simple this system is a safety net for stopping crazy farming when people find exploits that make each run super fast. We are also addressing those loopholes, but that takes time and new ones might always be discovered. If you and your group do the dungeons without skipping large sections and run different chains this system shoul(bugs aside) never impact you.

Addendum for clarity, super fast means < 30 minutes, and even then you must hit that speed multiple times in a row before you start seeing any impact.

I’m pretty annoyed after all the press you guys put out pre-launch like the MMO Manifesto that this is how this game ends up. You’re not putting restrictions on botters and exploiters, you’re putting restrictions on players. It’s shocking to me to think that this game that was all about fun turns out to be more about wondering if you’re doing it right. Did I run that dungeon too fast? Did I kill too many of those? What to the developers want me to do here?

Do you honestly think that’s fun for people? Checking a clock while they are running dungeons to make sure they’re going slow enough? You make explore modes hard, purposely difficult to pug, then if a group is actually able to pull it off you punish them. What are you people thinking? You punish the average player that has no interest in practicing to become an expert MMO player by making 3/4 of your dungeon content unpuggable and you also punish the guy that did take the time to become an expert and got through your little challenge. Who do you think wants to play in a game where you can’t win? If the mobs don’t kill you, Arena Net will by withholding the reward you are due.

I wish you would have said in your manifesto that this is how it would be, because I wouldn’t have bought your game.

So basically what Robert is saying; is that we can only be good at one dungeon.

You can be good at all dungeons. Just don’t run them back to back in rapid succession.

I don’t believe I’ve ever heard of a system that punishes people for playing the game. If your group is good and knows how to get through content quickly and efficiently, you will be limited. Seriously? It’s akittengood thing this thing has no sub, but even at the cost of purchase this angers me.

Don’t miss armory at all. Inspect isn’t necessary because stats are standardized by tier. What many problems with WvW? The only problem I’ve had there was getting in (which does need to be addressed, never ending queues are bad).

There does need to be more to do at endgame and there are patches and content coming. I feel that there are many things that need to be addressed, but gear isn’t one of them. If you want the “my gear is better than your gear” game, yes you should go back to WoW because you’ll never get that here.

Support players not receiving badges in WvW, never having communication is another lacking thing, when i go into WvW its like everyone’s a chicken with its head cut off.

I’d love more of a gear treadmill for just skins along with weapons

Ah, ok. I can agree with those. The communication thing is hard to do though since everyone in WvW is from different guilds, but something to investigate for possible solutions.

Can’t pick one thing.

  • First the camera’s and mouse controls need to be fixed.
  • Second there needs to be a lot more to do at 80.
  • Third, if I’m gonna be downscaled, the rewards should be on par with time spent clearing content.
  • Fourth, busy servers need more space in WvW.
  • Fifth, events need to appear more often in unpopulated zones and be able to be soloed.
  • Sixth, color coded “name plates” (health bars and names above player heads) in PvP, with a different color for pets (class color for player, red for pet).
  • Seventh, puggable dungeons. Not everyone has 4 people standing around every time they log on wanting to do dungeons.
  • Eighth, something to do in larger, organized groups for PvE, guild activities.
  • Ninth, player to player trading by implementing CoD in mail.
  • Tenth, better communication from Anet. Complete patch notes, all notes in one place, announcements in one place, etc.

Those 10 things would make me a much happier gamer in Guild Wars.

That’s a good question. Any professional software developer thoroughly tests their products before release. Including major patches. Even small MMO devs like CCP (EVE Online) have a test server. Arena Net seems like amateur hour in comparison to other heavy hitters in the industry. From things like deploying untested patches to using Reddit for customer service to launching an MMO without sufficient hacking protection and account restoration. Hopefully they figure it out while they still have customers, because getting people to return once they’ve left is next to impossible.

Online Persistent World?

For that matter, for the sake of continuity, why can’t the overflows be synced with the servers? They’re all the same time because we don’t have east coast/west coast servers so they should all be the same. It would make the game more seamless and provide that illusion of a persistent world (even though it really isn’t).

I would have just quoted myself saying previously that this isn’t about overflow, it’s about changing zones on server, but the quoting thing isn’t showing up again.

This isn’t about overflow. It’s about changing zones on the same server.

In fact, I just did this. I was in Lions Arch and when I logged in I was put on the overflow. So, I waited until the thing popped up to take me to the server. Once on my server I noticed that it was daytime in Lions Arch. I then ran out of Lions Arch to Gendarran Fields and did not get put on the overflow. It was nighttime. This isn’t going from one city to another, this is just going outside the gate.

Online Persistent World?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Oxe.6142

To be fair, the game itself isn’t seamless. I have a hard time caring about continuity in a game that has loading screens between zones.

Well ya, but the point is the claim has been made that this IS an online persistent world. How can it be if the sun can’t even rise and set at the same time at different parts of it? Probably the biggest criticism of GW1 was that it was instanced. I don’t see much difference here except people can enter and leave the instance at will and the mobs respawn. If the time’s were synced it would help the illusion of a persistent world immensely.

If GW2 is an open, online, PERSISTENT WORLD (emphasis on that), why do I leave Lions Arch in the daytime through an Asura Gate to Divinities Reach and arrive at night? Or better yet, walk right outside Lions Arch where it was daytime to a nice starry night in Gendarran Fields?

Asura Gates are supposed to be instant and the game world is a small part of the world it’s supposed to reside on. Not near far enough to pass through a day/night cycle. Is this a bug or an oversight?

This is about changing zones on the same server. I also think that overflows should be synced to the same time as the servers to keep the persistent world feeling.

The anonymity of Guild Wars 2 and the degredation of social MMO's

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Oxe.6142

Oxe.6142

I agree with the OP. There is nothing to do as a guild and the way the system is designed guilds just spam invite people so they can get the most influence. This means you end up with a basic town population where no one has similar interests and you’re no better off talking in guild than you would be in /map chat. It also means later, if anyone is still playing this game later, guilds that try to start will have no hope of recruiting people because they won’t have the perks and people will simply go with a guild that’s already earned them. It happened in WoW when they introduced perks, it will happen here. Also, being able to join multiple guilds yet being visible to all only serves to start arguments. “Why aren’t you representing us?” It needs to be one character per guild or go back to the GW1 way (which was awful).

As a social game goes, I’ve never felt so alone as I do in GW2. I felt more comradery from Lidia in Skyrim than I do with the people around me in DE’s. They aren’t designed to require communication and everyone on the map might as well be just as digital as Lidia was. At least she was polite 100% of the time and always helpful.

I get a kick out of people saying that crafting is end game content and DE’s constitute raiding. Just makes me /facepalm and laugh every time.

Raiding is organized play. It requires skilled people working together in a complicated fight. It is not 10-20-30-40-50 or however many people zerging a boss with no mechanics to worry about spamming 1-5 till it’s dead. GW2 lacks any sort of guild PvE activities. It doesn’t even have GvG in PvP (which, why not? GW1 did). The dungeon explore modes aren’t fun, they have terrible rewards and you can’t do them as a guild. Roaming the world endlessly hoping to trigger a world boss chain as a guild would be an awful waste of time and not fun. So, not counting crafting (LOL) or DE’s, what’s there to do with your guild? Nothing.

Found improvement for mouse smoothing/lag + small performance bump

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Oxe.6142

Oxe.6142

Mouse behavior is tied to performance, FPS, the lower your FPS the more mouse lag you will have.

That’s how every single game in the existence of games have all worked, which is why 60+ FPS is so vitally important in certain kind of games such as twitch shooters. The reason you get mouse lag when your FPS gets low is because your computer requires more time to render each and every frame. And because it uses more time to render frames it also display those frames much slower than if you have higher FPS.

But an other problem is that GW2 has mouse smoothing, what this does is smooth out movement a few frames, if you have a very limited number of frames this smoothing will last longer. We need an option to completely turn off mouse smoothing, this should significantly improve responsiveness, even on low en computers.

In my world 20 FPS is just not playable. In shooters I can not play with anything below 60 FPS, makes it horrible! In RPGs I prefer 50+, 40 is ok, 30 is the bare minimum.

Edit: Oh and also, turn off Vsync if you have it on, it adds enormous amounts of input lag to any game, and if input lag is already an issue then it is even more important to get it off.

Low quality games have issues with mouse lag. There is a simple fix called “hardware cursor” but the GW1 engine may not have that feature built into it. It hasn’t been an issue in software for years, except for software using outdated code, like this one does. I’d agree with the rest of what you said tho.

That’s an awful lot of world bosses to come across and they don’t seem to be all that common.

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Oxe.6142

The reason you have a laggy mouse in GW2 is because the engine is based on the GW1 engine. It’s a heavily modified version of the same software. Mouse behavior is tied to performance, FPS, the lower your FPS the more mouse lag you will have. That’s also why it’s such a big deal to fix. Don’t look for it to get better any time soon.

By contrast, Blizzard worked 24/7 when Diablo 3 launched to get the game working. I make this comparison because Diablo 3, like GW2 launched with lots of bugs. The difference is how the companies handled that.

Hey Robert, quick question. Has anyone in the development team considered that dungeons often don’t reside on maps that have the same level as the dungeon? That means if you put yourself in the “Looking for Group” thingy in your social panel you’re looking for more from a pool of people that aren’t able to do the dungeon. Standing out front spamming the people standing with you does the exact same thing. In effect, the LFG thing does nothing because it’s limited to map/server.
