Yeah, I focus on control and condition as well. If someone comes close I can throw a static shield followed by a wrench which stops most of the would be damage, knock away with magnetic inversion, fire away with my flamethrower, airblast away, then launch a napalm, and drop a box of nails for condition and control – And if the target comes close a punishing prybar comes out. Having 2 blinds and gear shield helps a ton as well.
Fair enough. Durrrr 15 char limit
well, Engineer can do 2 stacks with static shot, 5 with prybar, and 5 with concussion bomb. That’s 12 stacks, but it takes a lot of skill to land them all, at least in pvp. I’m going to assume that to stack confusion to levels where it’s a real pain in the butthole, you need skill. That’s fine you know, there’s multiple ways to cure confusion and to avoid skills inflicting it, so maybe it would pay to trait up your combat movement? Just so you can run and wait it out.
That said, I do think mesmers need to suffer a penalty to confusion damage the more they stack it, since they have a very easy time doing so.
Why are so many rolling humans? There’s enough humans around me irl and a lot of them are jerks. Ain’t the point of games to be something you can’t be irl?
I actually prefer flamethrower to grenades.
The damage got buffed recently and it’s MUCH easier to hit with it than with grenades – And it has a much faster hit ratio. But I guess for maximim conditions you can get juggernaught trait, then use flamethrower whenever the skills on grenade kit are off cooldown. Having 6 might stacks constant and the extra crits from drop stimulants with medkit is nothing to scoff at, and the extra toughness might save your skin.
Kamhal, that’s assuming every grenade hits and it requires tons of micro managing – Even in PVE you might miss since mobs might chase people who have to move to not die, and in PvP you’d have better luck stepdancing on the back of an icebear wearing a spacesuit on mars while riding Zeus’ lighting bolts while playing pong with Hercules than connecting even half your nades.
(edited by Oxstar.7643)
Can’t remember, but does Elixir S stop condition damage as well?
it does not clear conditions you have ticking but it does prevent you from taking new conditions since you evade all attacks (unlike warriors or rangers invulns).
@ op, regardless of how you spec, remember you shouldn’t go anywhere near berserking glass cannon just because your duo buddy is tanky. sooner or later you will get focused and you need every bit of survivability you can get, especially against thieves who will, generally, avoid attacking the guardian. I’m referring to 2vmany obviously.
Well he did never say it was a 5man pvp team – I have a great build for being a surviable engy but still dishing out meaningful damage at the same time though.
I would say the low lvl areas are desolated.

Well, yeasterday I was in wvwvw whenI got pulled over a small hill and got launched a good 100 feet or so into the air – I survived despite fall damage, but was thinking “Woaaaah, what’s going on here?”.
That or the time when I was in Tutu and we marched naked through LA – Or was lying around in the inn in LA, inhaling the “mist” from my healing turret…
For damage I guess you could always ramp ur crit and condition damage as much as possible, use med kit, flamethrower, elixir B or U, and grenade kit, then 30 points into power, 30 points into crits, 10 points into gadgets, then get incindeary powder, static discharge, and juggernaught? Having flamethrower out empowers you, use it when your grenade skills are on cooldown. Use elixir U for increased speed, preferbly with flamethrower, then take whatever traits that makes you hit harder.
Okay, start by increasing your gear and running explorables. Greens are good enough for explorables really, just farm for an hour an southsun cove (go to the guy marked by a little boat on the map in LA) and sell the drops and you should have a full lvl 80 set.
Once you’ve farmed for a while start gearing up, either by selling spoils or with tokens from the explorables (which btw is the harder version of storymode in dungeons). Also, you can buy lvl 80 exotics with karma points in Orr – Major events such as the god shrines (Dwayna Balthazar etc) spawn the NPC’s that sell them.
Now it’s time to pick a build. Now, I don’t know what you want to be, tell me what you wanna do with your battles and I can help you further. You can also look builds up on google or indeed this very board.
I advice joining a guild for lvl 80 content. As for how to effectively fight, it comes with practice.
Flamethrower weak? Where do you people get this… Not so long ago the damage was bumped up by 10%, and considering how fast it hits that’s quite a lot, and being able to detonate flare shot (I call it that) at will is quite nice. I’ve been in wvwvw a lot lately, and the impression I get is that flamethrower is meant to do some serious multi target damage when your allies occupy clusters of foes – And it’s a godsend for hunting down mesmers.
It’s also a great chase tool.
Interesting ideas, but I personally feel Engineer is fine atm – My engy works great with the build I have.
So I was thinking of names for my Flamethrower and Elixirgun. Any ideas?
As title says. Today when I was in wvwvw, I got pulled over a hill and was promptly launched into the air, taking, full damage from the drop. Thankfully I survived, but obviously this sort of thing should not happen.
Not only that, but it seems that when you use skills intended to move you backwards and through the air, such as rocket boots, you sometimes get stuck in the landscape and end up moving a small to no distance at all. Needless to say, nothing should stop you like that short of smacking into a wall.
So I’d say the maps have a lot of ground issues to smooth out.
My complaints have all been pve which is the bulk of the complaints people will see. There isn’t an argument that engis can’t perform in pvp there is a very valid one that engis cannot perform like the other classes in pve which is largely due to them “balancing” pvp. so they have alot of rebuffing to do on the pve side to make this class viable again starting with the scaling including the healing scaling which almost none of the skills for healing scale with +healing gear and then there are the weapons as well.
Idk man I feel that I’m doing well enough being the prime healer for every team I’m in, while STILL dishing out meaningful stuff like anti-conditions, cc, conditions, buffs – Also since Engineer requires good situational awerness to deliver, Engys are usually fast at reacting to stuff like downed party members etc. I imagine warriors have much more players who just wanna “Hit things”.
Dat Norn female outfit.
With that waistcoat sensually sliding down over the left buttcheek.
And that string showing…
Well, it’s a choice to look like, you can just slap a transmutated item on the leggings and pling.
I still have fun… I hear ppl talk about bugs, unbalance, glitches, sucky developers… Obviously it’s all there but I don’t feel like it’s my problem just yet since I still have fun. Casual player for life. Yet I get chewed out sometimes for not spazzing out over a million problems that I haven’t even encountered yet.
Homer Simpson is a blighted moron, but he once said something true; Just because I don’t care doesn’t mean I don’t understand. Live in the now and enjoy the simple things with this game, or go. It’s up to you.
THIS THREAD IS CREDIT TO HUMANITY!
I agree, let us just pick our own kit skills. That’s what an actual Engineer would do anyways, pick the tools he think he will need most, not go with a pre-packed one.
My reasoning is simple.
I have won both 1-1 and group fight vs pretty much every class on multple occasions.
I honestly feel like people underestimate Engineers way too much and this largely contributes to their downfall.
Guardians are predictable as all heck.
So are warriors.
Thieves is a simple net matter.
Eles run when they get low on hp, well, bon voyage.
Mesmers go down fast if you stay on the real one and know how to counter clones.
Rangers get a taste of their own reflected medicine, or plain pull.
Necromancers are also a squishy pull and squish things, though that death shroud is annoying.
I’d say Engineer is a class for those with good situational awerness. It’s not as much a pick up and play as the rest but higher learning curve means you’ll only get more dangerous.
Lovely combo for engineer.
Magnetic pull+prybar+overcharged shot+net shot+jumpshot+net attack+rocket kick.
And if you’re a high damage engineer then glass cannons are screwed and even bunkers will start to worry. Not to mention you can just plonk down a net turret for 3 more nets and keep hitting. Or deliver a blunderbuss. This combo will not make a bunker worry… lol.
The only decent damage from that combo is prybar and blunderbuss, the rest do pretty bad damage and a bunker probably wouldn’t even notice their health bar drop.
It would probably kill a glass cannon though if they gave you the 10s you needed to pull this combo off.
Looks cool though I’ll give it that.
Well, since they are constantly on their kitten or netted up I think the time is there lol.
As for bunkers, armor does zero vs conditions – Funny fact, confusion works through “Endure pain” ^^
lol people often seem to overlook what ferocious pack animal Engys make XD
Doing instances now and then and some wvw, doing pretty well for myself.
I also love how people say every other class is so much better yet I keep winning.
Perhaps because WvW is largely meaningless in terms of class balance and is full of Pvers and not so good players, so anyone half decent can do well on any class, try doing some paid tPvP against people that have a clue as to what they are doing and see how many times you get instagibbed or how your engy is inferior at every role, because your class has been nerfed to death / full of bugs and is bascially weak.
Blah blah blah you just suck at engy bro, admit it eyeroll
And I don’t do TPvP because I HATE how you’re locked into one setup.
I also took down a legendary weapon wielding guardian on my own so hah ^^
I don’t know man, I’m sorta worried I’d have a ton of stuff I don’t use with me just for one thing I simply must have. A better way imo is to unbind all skills and let us select ourselves what we want to have in a maximum of 4 kits. My first kit would contain drop stimulants, super elixir, rocket boots, prybar, and gear shield.
Lovely combo for engineer.

Blah blah blah thieves warriors and mesmer pww Engineer.
I kill them.
Blah blah blah engineer sucks at every role.
I keep parties alive and good conditions on foes.
Blah blah blah Engineer only wins if foes are noobs.
I am a noob. I win.
It never freaking stops. You could be the best Engineer in the world and win at everything forever and kitten easymode chumps will STILL say the class sucks just because they can’t handle it.
Doing instances now and then and some wvw, doing pretty well for myself.

i recently noticed that sigils which offer on swap abilities indefinitely (within a few guidelines) stack.
eg: grants might on swap; because weapon sigils apply to kits, you can swap back and forth every 5 sec or so to continually add stacks of might. the caveat is that each sigil stack seems to be on its own timer, of sorts, so they overlap. at about 2/3 remaining ( about at the bottom-right square corner of the boon icon) is where the sweet spot seems to be.
thus, swappong between weapon and kit (i use p/p + nades) offers increased dmg output and the longer the fight, the stronger you become (like the hulk, only more boom and less smash). i was able to get up to 13 stacks on a champion ettin fight, if you can reliably stay out of aggro i bet you could go higher.
something to tinker with, at least..
3 with enhance performance.
3 with superior sigil of battle.
3 with 6 runes of altrusim (and extra fury)
Swap back and forth to medkit and you get 9 stacks of might every 10 secs and almost constant fury with drop stimulants.
13? lol, in a prolonged fight 16 is easy, in group fights way past 20 is easy.
I’ve played WAY less than 400 hours & use no magic find & have found loads of exotics off Champs, Vets & regs (I believe). The other day I got 2 exotics for a map completion. The drop rate could be increased for chests, but it’s not a big deal for me.
Not sure why you can’t seem to find any.
I love your name. Super villain Batman ftw.
On SPvP Engineer downing Engineer
You just ain’t doing it right – Engineer Team Fortress 2
Something I LOVE to do is to pull someone in from afar, give him a prybar and a rocket kick to the face. This does respecteble damage even on bunkers due to the conditions.
I also like how I can just stand there and outheal some ranged oponents with double super elixir+healing mist. Ofc that won’t work vs glass cannons but it certingly is handy to have, esp to remove conditions.
Another fun thing to do in wvw is to give a crowd a shield toss followed by a wrench toss. It does okay dmg, but moreover interrupts all it hits which can stop a lot of nasty stuff.
For 1-1 the BEST setup imo is shield and pistol, medkit, net turret, elixir gun (with kit refinement), toolkit, and supply crate. Just keep healing with bandage wounds, drop bandages, and super elixir+healing mist. The net turret is great both to stop ranged so you can give them some wrench loving and to keep melee away (haha thieves) to give them some pistol+shield love. Ofc gear shield is indispenseble and if you’re lucky you can stop a heal with shield toss, unless it’s a guardian (throw it when they run away).
I also like how I can cover up a group retreat by clustering the ground with box of nails – It’s a MUCH more potent cc tool than the weak caltrops thieves have.
And it goes on… Engy can do so many things, I think the most important thing is to keep the enemy guessing so they can’t pre-plan the fight.
If they buffed up the old gear no one would need to get new.
Why is this a problem?
Because then getting new gear would be pointless, other than bragging value. People need a rewarding reason to work for new stuff.
And what evidence can you provide to support the hypothesis that different stats on gear is the only, “rewarding reason,” that people have to, “work for new stuff?”
Additionally, please provide evidence to support the notion that work is one of the desirable aspects of playing a game.
I never said it’s the only one. I said that aqquiring new gear which always takes some work must feel rewarding. Otherwise there’s no point, and people need progression&reward to stay interested. If you don’t understand this then you’re sorta… Yeah.
As for your other question, what do you think made Dark Souls so popular? Hard work complete is a very satisfying reward in itself.
How do I prove all this? Because gaming history, both in multi and non multiplayer, and the general gamer disgust for easy mode games, stands as testement to my words. You’re honestly demanding evidence for something that has already been proven by the masses multiple times.
If they buffed up the old gear no one would need to get new.
Why is this a problem?
Because then getting new gear would be pointless, other than bragging value. People need a rewarding reason to work for new stuff.
See it this way. Others worked hard to lose their top gear position every time an expansion or new better gear came out. There’s nothing to do about it. If they buffed up the old gear no one would need to get new.
Look. This game won’t have a trinity, EVER.
That’s the whole idea behind the classes and have been so since development.
Personally I feel happy that you can be so diverse all the time.
And I sure I’m happy I don’t have to see “4/5 LF tank” or “LF2M dps got tank and healer”.
Poems? Fine.
In honor of my best friend in GW2 who now don’t play anymore, here is mine.
Accept your sorrow and smile with grief
Days slips away, stolen by that endless thief
You’ll always mourn inside for your loss
It’s all in balance like the coin and the toss
There will always be something that you lack
To hell and back
God is wearing black…
I handle myself well enough as Engineer, so, poo poo on all of you who say that we can’t compete with the other classes.
That’s as far as I get. Then after the loading screen, just white and a message that I can’t log into the game… I wonder what’s going on? Is this happening to many others?
All I can say Daigle is that you really like to take thigns out of context and then blow them WAY out of proportion.
Yes, it’s the secret to our genius brains.
Funny then how it makes me take less dmg and the enemy more. Maybe it only really works for bunkers.
Maybe your profession has a trait that does this, altough i dont remember any such trait. But baseline retaliation DOES NOT reduce incomming damage.
Hence why its a pointless boon when we are talking about boons keeping people alive.Unless you wanna go down the “but it kills enemies a tiny bit faster!”, but then we must include Might aswell as a boon that keeps you and your allies alive longer.
The point is, They hinted that the Engineer was somehow special and that it was the profession that uses boons to keep himself and other alive.
Funny because so does the Guardian, Ele and Necro and they all do it considerably better then an Engineer ever could.
Ya? I don’t see necros having fury forever.
Or Guardians stacking 15-20 consistent might stacks.
This coming from a stubborn tourney engineer.
Engineer is only ok in SPvP because of the amount of knockbacks he has, nothing else.
Knockbacks are borderline useless in PvE, as such saying engineers are sub-par in PvE would be the understatement of the year. Those healing numbers you listed are not big, just saying. If healing power scaled better engineers would be fine healers, but as it stands at the moment stacking healing power is a terrible idea for any class, engineer included. Actually on tourney condition thieves its ok, but nothing else.
Engineer as a class is flawed, effective range is close to melee range yet our class strength is being able to knock targets away from us?
Troll class design right there. Still fun to play though.
Despite what you say I’m STILL doing pretty good both PvE and PvP wise.
Instead of crunching numbers I suggest you try it yourself, because really, there don’t see to be any other way to make people think beyond the fotm and anti-fotm.
Bomb healing is 146 base with a .1 scaling.
They have a .5s cast time, as well as a .5s fuse, making them around 1/second.
With quickness, that’s only around 4 bombs every 3 seconds. (Fuse timer is unaffected)
This means that Ele Water staff 1 is still superior.
Not by a lot though, and that’s still a worthy addition to the three other aoe heals. And like I said, bombs does a lot more damage and offer some cc as well.
Lightsbane, yes.
And since it has been requested, here are the healing numbers from elixir gun, completely without healing power and augumented only by ten points into tools for kit refinement.
403 impact heal
148 second tick
138 second tick healing mist
As for bombs, I’m sorry, but it’s IMPOSSIBLE to deduce base heal since you need 30 points into tools (300+ healing power) to make them heal you.
It might help to know though that I get 458 healing power from my gear, 179 from my rifle, then 445 from my accessories. That’s 1082 then 300 from traits. 1382.As for toughness that’s 224 from gear, 128 from rifle, and 316 from accessories. And 300 from trait. That’s 668.
Well, that should cover up all my healing stats. Have fun.
We don’t get stats from weapons while using the Elixir gun kit, by the way.
Grand total for the Super Elixir is 1203.
Also, it’s not entirely impossible to deduce base heal for the elixir bombs:
Figure out how much Healing power you get without armor, then put the armor on and figure out how much the bombs heal you with the armor.
It should be a linear scaling, so you should GENERALLY be able to figure out the rate of the scaling as well as its base.
Have fun. And you can swap back to your weapon as soon as the circles are down.
Funny then how it makes me take less dmg and the enemy more. Maybe it only really works for bunkers.
We have power shoes for 25% more speed in battle and speedy kits for infinite swiftness in and outside it. I think we’re good.
There you go being wrong again…silly Oxstar.
I haven’t played with the bombs much at all, they whoomp out big numbers which make my pants stiffen, but maaaannn…we should get an ability to make them STICKY BOMBS for 30 seconds or something. omg that would be omg.
Either way you cut it, we arent OMGuardians, WTFThievess, or WTFBBQROFLCOPTERWarriors
No, we are a less seasoned mix of all of those – Like a burger from McDonalds. It’s not the finest cheese, beef, or salad dressing, but it’s STILL a burger from McDonalds – Which some love and some hate.
And stickybombs, cmon man, this ain’t TF2. Besides you have a mine field with remote detonation.
The buffs that keep people alive are Stability and Protection. With Aegis to a lesser extent.
We cannot do Aegis, we cannot reliably keep Protection or Stability on allies. Leaving us with Regeneration. And really, does it matter if your swaps of whatever is below 10 secs or not? Altrusim bonus, and every other switch based buff for that matter, is never under 10 secs.
You could switch those runes over to almost any other profession and be way more effective.
Nope. They procc every 10 secs and any class who has a higher switch time than that is LESS effective. Anyways, the point is Engineer can take maximum advantage of those runes, I.E no other class could do a better job at team buffing with the runes alone (or self buffing) but maybe not a worse job either.
And the point was not if the buffs are engineer-spcific or not but if they helped keeping you alive.
Shout warriors got a lame 15 sec CD shout that does mediocre healing. I can provide constant means of area retaliation in an area while also healing.
Weaponswapping in combat is a 10sec cd, pre-traits some professions have to reduce that cooldown. Attunement switching also triggers this. We might not use it worst, but we dont use it a whole lot better either.
And it is irrelevant, because were talking about Engineer abilities here. Not something commonly available. These buffs can help anyone keep themselves or others alive. But they wouldnt need it so much now would they? I can go on my Guardian, and without spending a single traitpoint i will always be able to instantly grant myself and allies in a 1200range with Protection, Stability, Regeneration, Aegis, Swiftness and Retaliation. All at the same time, while youre still throwing around small AoE elixirs, hoping to proc Protection.
Not that Retaliation matters much since it doesnt prevent damage from happening, or mitigates that damage.
Oh please. Elixirs is not part of my build at all.
But I imagine elixir engys reason in the way that whatever result they get syncs well with their build.
And your buffs are quite shortlived.
Retaliation doesn’t matter? Dude. You think EVERYONE is condition specced in this game? I’m not sure how much of the direct damage is reflected back but it’s enough to matter, and it increases the damage your enemy takes as well.
Typically ranged classes are condition specced. Melee, death blossom thief being the exception, usually go for direct damage.
And altrusim bonuses are only possible every 10 secs so how fast you can swap through kits or attunments is irrevelevant as long as you can procc it every 10th sec.
And considering that there is no CD on kit swapping engineers can compete with the best of them in taking advantage of altrusim runes. Hpw effective these buffs are to the engineer himself depends on him – But he can buff his team by using the runes as well as anybody. And himself for that matter.
