Guild Wars 2

If anyone thinks this is going to bring in and hold the WoW crowd’s attention, you must not have played WoW. I did, for quite awhile. I grew tired of chasing the gear and played only alts until that too grew stale.

The people who still play WoW are going to continue to play WoW. They obviously enjoy the gear treadmill. Since they enjoy the treadmill, why would they jump off the one they are on for a different one? Gold is easy to make in WoW, especially for long time players. Crafting nets you more gold in WoW. Can’t say the same of GW2. The WoW players have years invested in their characters…this means achievements, titles, mounts, pets, etc. They are not going to switch! My son still plays WoW. He isn’t remotely interested in GW2. I have friends who still play WoW who I couldn’t pry off their Pink Uber Sparkly Drake of Happiness with a crowbar.

Introducing a gear grind to GW2 might bring in a few people who are in between mmo’s for a short amount of time but it is not going to hold the core players here who would spend the money in cash shop and buy additional box expansions. It certainly isn’t going to pull in the current WoW crowd.

If I wanted a gear grind, why wouldn’t I go back to WoW? WoW has 8 years of gear grind content under their belts. I have characters there with gold coming out of their ears. I can put things on the auction house and actually make some gold that way. I can gear alts in heirloom gear. I can chase the gear without having to be in a super elite guild by using the lfd tool and get into any dungeon to chase said gear. If a gear grind is what I wanted, I would still be playing WoW and would not have bought GW2. WoW does the gear treadmill better as they have way more practice at it.

I wanted a game where when I reached “endgame” it would be about DE’s, WvW, PvP, exploring, and new content….not new gear. I wanted housing. I wanted to see how my personal story would shape my character. I wanted to believe the hype.

I agree, I wish the minis were equippable. (Is that a word? lol) Even with an invisible bag, your minis take up bag space if you want them with you and not shoved in your bank.

When Warhammer merged a lot of their servers and forced you to change your name or gave you your name with X’s, that is when I threw in the towel.

I apparently chose the name first and that is my character, doesn’t matter if it is my lvl 80 wvw character, my lvl 60 chef character, or my 4-5 little alts that I use for low level mat gathering or just to kill a bit of time on. As a matter of fact, I went back to DAoC awhile back to see what was up and I still had all of my characters (names intact) there. Same with WoW.

GW2 gives you the option to add a last name and/or a title. If you are so unimaginative that you have to use a name from Tolkein or whatever, try Sir Legolas Huntsman or something. I actually thought using famous characters and celebrities was against the terms but since I didn’t do that, I didn’t read that part too closely. Might want to check it.

Long story short…no, you shouldn’t be able to take other people’s names.

Since I haven’t read every single post in this thread, I don’t know if anyone has said it yet.

I noticed as soon as someone abbreviated the new dungeon that it is FotM…Flavor of the Month anyone?

Here’s my take:

They are coinciding invite-a-friend with the new content release. Now, most of us know that all of our friends who really wanted to play GW2 bought it and are or have played it. Our friends who didn’t want to play it are playing pandas or the new Rift expansion or something else. So, the way Anet is trying to hook our “friends” who didn’t already try GW2 is to give them the things missing from GW2 that are in the other games…ie. gear treadmill under the guise of “progression”

Not gonna work. They may come over for the weekend, but seriously, the ones who want to play WoW are gonna play WoW and Rift’s expac is brand new. All this is doing is messing up GW2 for the people who have already been playing.

Honestly, I wouldn’t care 2 cents what the stats were on the armor if you couldn’t wear it in wvw. However, it is only a matter of time before stepping into wvw without AS gear is like playing WoW’s bgs without heirloom gear leveling up. And with the state wvw is in right now, it doesn’t really need another strike against it.

Agreed. I loved the Camelot Herald and was hoping we would have something similar here.

I liked RvR in DAoC and played pvp in a few other games since. They had their goods and bads. I was hoping GW2 would play like DAoC’s RvR. It doesn’t. So that was a disappointment. I can get over that though.

There doesn’t seem to be much strategy. Zerg v zerg, and you have to because if you are alone or small group, you get mowed over, usually by a bunch of people you can’t see ’til you are already dead.

There isn’t really a goal besides a scoreboard that resets once a week. You are matched against random opponents. You may as well be pve’ing because they are just like mobs but instead of Grub or Minotaur they are Invader or Defender. They don’t have names, no distinguishable features because they are all in red or green or blue.

Many times there is little to no communication. When you enter wvw your best bet is to try and make it to wherever the commander icon is to join the zerg. If it weren’t for the commander icon, you would never know where the zerg was. The little crossed swords are not always the best indicator and besides, it is usually over by the time you get there and you either run into invisible enemies, or nobody is around at all.

I like to go to wvw still. But, I usually leave out of frustration over not being able to see the enemy. Also, why is it I can see everyone just fine when I am DEAD?

Badges for Legendaries, map completion, and monthly achievements are not PVE. You can use the legendaries in wvw. Map completion shouldn’t be simple, it should be an achievement from completing all of the maps. Otherwise it would be just some of the maps completion. And the monthly achievements have always had kill 50 players on it right? I hate doing dungeons. Does this mean that Anet should remove that from achievements and monthlies?

There are things in the game that are not enjoyable to everyone. I think we can all agree that being killed by puzzle campers isn’t enjoyable for anyone! Being the campers is a lot more fun than being the camped. So don’t be the one camped. If you get there, and it’s camped. Come back later. You don’t have to do it right this second.

Yes, it would help immensely to be able to do this out of combat. No need for during. Having to go through your bags looking for your stuff all the time to swap out is a pain.

Are you sure you have completed every zone? Every zone, including wvw, has to be at 100%. No, you do not have to have completed your personal story.

I like how DAoC did it. You had housing zones which were instanced. Inside the instances were neighborhoods and it told you who owned the house. If it was a guild house, it told you which guild. It also let you display your guild banners on your house. You could decorate and make it so your house was locked or others could come in to look at things. If you killed things, you could take it to a taxidermist and have it mounted to display on the walls in your home or on stands. (I had little colorful fairies nailed to a board hung on the wall, lol.)

I would not want people to just be able to build houses anywhere. The bots would have slums next to all of the DE’s!

You wouldn’t even need a separate voice actor. It was suggested in another post to be able to choose different voice styles. So if you choose charismatic voice, or evil voice or whatever, your character will talk like that. It would have different phrases and different inflections. They had it in Neverwinter Nights and other games. It was cool. Helped your characters have different personalities.

How about take the suppression off totally and if someone is spamming and you report them, it blocks them so you can’t see it anymore and they are reported so Anet can look into it? That way, people who are legitimately using the chat can still use it, if someone is abusing it, the public can report and block at the same time. Win-win, yes?

The pvp area doesn’t count but the wvw area does. If an opposing team owns something and you can’t get in, try later. Also, do as much of your own borderlands quickly after match resets.

Ok, so I have been trying to get all of the diving goggles. I had some of them from doing map completion but since they added the achievement in when I was nearly through with map completion, I had to go back and redo some of the ones I had found. I still had not found all of them.

I looked at wiki to try and figure out which ones I don’t have. It says there is one in Metrica on the little jumping stone bridge SW of Loch Waypoint. There was even a screenshot of it. My husband and I went there and no goggles.

After the patch the other night, we went the next day and no goggles. They just patched a few minutes ago so we went and did a previously bugged puzzle and then went to get the goggles. Still no goggles.

Can anyone confirm for me whether there are supposed to be goggles there? Any help is appreciated!

First of all, it is an American company. They are not purposely sitting around trying to come up with ways to hack off people in other countries.

Secondly, a lot of times, the time Anet chooses isn’t even convenient for Americans. 12 pm on a Sunday is church time for many. Having something on Thursday or Friday afternoon means many Americans are at work. My husband works Saturdays so even Saturday afternoon means he will miss it.

That said, I think if the 1 time event is like the Halloween one which was just a cutscene, not a big deal. As long as no achievement or anything is tied to it.

Now, if it is some really cool 1 time event where you can get something, either achievement or loot, that would be crummy as many, many players would miss out…including Americans.

The noon time that many of Anets events are scheduled for are actually better for EU servers. Really bad for Oceanic though. Which is a bummer because we are moving to Australia which will put us in the 3-5 am category for the noon updates.

All of those saying how good a ranger’s downed state is….have you ever played a ranger? Sure, the pet can rez you…or at least that is what the button says. However, what usually happens, by the time you can use the button, you press it, the pet comes over, sniffs you for a second and you die. So you either leave your pet chewing on someone hoping it MIGHT kill someone before you get your head jumped on, or you call your pet over to spend that last little bit of time together before you get your head stomped on.

Hoping downed states are looked at and tweaked for the patch. /fingers crossed

There are other places in wvw where you can place siege that cannot be hit or is very difficult to hit it. It isn’t an exploit, it is strategy. It isn’t griefing, it is pvp. You do not have to go to wvw, you do not have to do the puzzle. If you are doing it for an achievement, that is your choice. I personally hate dungeons but am going to “have” to do some for my monthly. I don’t think Anet or the dungeon mobs are griefing me though. If I want the monthly, I’ll do the dungeons. If you want the map completion or jump puzzle achievement, you’ll do the wvw.

In DAoC the place for smallscale fights was Emain. In vanilla WoW it was South Shore/Tarren Mill. I’m sure in other games they had their favored pvp spots as well. People like to have a smaller area where they can fight solo or small group that isn’t infested with mobs. If it is camped when you go there, try again a different time if you don’t feel like fighting or if you can’t get to them.

Pvping someone in a pvp zone while they try and win a chest full of pvp schematics is not griefing.

The puzzles are in a pvp zone and give pvp rewards. Therefore, they are important enough to defend and also important enough to try and complete. This makes them a pvp objective.

I can’t figure out why people keep referring to it as a “PVE puzzle”.

Is there a boss in there? Nope….
Is it a dynamic event in there? Nope…..
Is it an instance? Nope…..
Is it in a pve zone? Nope….

It is in a pvp zone. It is where pvp is taking place. It gives pvp rewards. Therefore, it looks like a pvp puzzle.

“There isn’t ‘female armors’ in real life because there were not many female warriors.”

This statement is incorrect. Joan of Arc and Elizabeth I are two I can think of off the top of my head who were real women who definitely did not wear chainmail bikinis. Ok, so you said “not many female warriors” and that part is true but there is real female armor worn by real women.

Also, a fantasy character I can think of who did not wear skimpy armor was Eowyn.

I have 4 female asura characters that I love but I did make 2 female humans so I can wear ‘pretty" clothes. This doesn’t mean I want skimpy armor, I just want feminine armor. Wish my asura could look a little more girly. Heck, I’d settle for girly town clothes!

There were NPC’s trying to save them. One guy was squatted down with his arms under like h was trying to lift the whale and he was saying “Remember, lift with your legs.” And there are buckets of water. I stood on one of the whales and threw bucket after bucket of water on it but nothing. Maybe it will be a DE where we have to save the whales. The whales make pitiful whale noises too and look at you with their big eyes like they hope you save them! Very odd really and a little sad.

I would rather see people’s dyed armor. They already have big red invader or defender over their heads.

A lot of the problem with minigames is it does not allow you to join as a group or even with one party member. My husband and I rarely get put into the same game, let alone the same team. If we do manage to get the same game, we are on opposing teams.

I think more people would play if you could play WITH your friends. My guild wanted to have a guild keg brawl. Hard to do when you can’t get in the same game.

I understand Anet doesn’t want an organized group beating the snot out of a bunch of pugs. As someone who solos when husband is not home, I agree, I don’t like being rolled. However, give two options to queue or something. Queue alone or queue as group. You may have to wait a little longer if you queue as group.

I don’t know what the solution is. I do love the minigames and I know I would play them more often if my husband and I or my guild could all play together.

A jumping puzzle where maybe you have to jump on the ornaments to get to the top of a large Wintersday tree.

Sledding! And snowball fights! A minigame where you have a snowball fight against another team would be fun.

I like the scavenger hunt type quests as well.

The Grenth Who Stole Wintersday….another little realm with minigames and minidungeon.

I have really enjoyed Halloween and if they do as well for Wintersday it will be a lot of fun!

There have been very nice Char and Norn in the tower when I have been trying. They come in, get naked, talk and are friendly. Then there are the jerks who not only wear giant flowy armor (which by the way, is even distracting on humans – elementalist skirt…) but they also hop up and down and strafe fast at the pause. When I get one of those, I leave, pour a cup of coffee and come back and get a new instance.

If I get an instance with more than 2 Char, I requeu it. Last night, I was the only Asura (smallest female you can make) in an instance with 1 human female, a sylvari male, 2 char and the rest norns only 1 being female. Everyone was naked and I had no problems.

But you know what, other than the few rude ones who were doing the distracting hopping and stuff, my issues with being able to see weren’t the other characters’ fault. I made the smallest character I could make. That was my choice. I can choose to stay in an instance with alot of big characters or requeue until I get one where I am comfortable enough to run the puzzle.

I saw people being rude and I made a point to thank those characters for being naked and tried to let them know not all of us feel more entitled to participate because we are vertically challenged.

And, it cracks me up to say, “I would just like to thank all of you big guys in here for being naked as it allows me to see so much better!” Always gets a laugh!

It has been great! Not only is the quaggan pirate (YAAARRRR!) adorable, but the little progeny cannibal…I want to put him in my pocket! The decorations have looked awesome.

The scavenger hunts were cool and the background lore was awesome. My husband and I were going, “Oh man, he is awful!”

The different sized candy corn monsters cracked me up! Bite sized, King sized, Family sized!

The whole new realm with different areas to choose from is superb and I am going to miss it when it is gone! I have really enjoyed Reaper’s Rumble once I got the hang of it.

In WoW, I always enjoyed the holiday stuff and looking to see if they added anything new each year. GW2 has done a great job with Halloween and we have 1 act still to go!

Can’t wait to see what is in store for Wintersday!

I think there should be the option to enter as a pug and play against other pugs or enter as a group and play against against another group. My husband and I can never play any of these mini games together, be it the Halloween ones or Keg Brawl. We are either matched against each other (sometimes fun) or not in the same game at all.

All I ever did was ask the Norn (and anyone wearing big flowy clothing) to get naked! Made the puzzle alot easier for us shorties. Most people were nice and got naked so there were just a bunch of us running naked through the clock tower! Hickory dickory dock….

Isn’t 12:00 PST like 8:00 PM in Europe? That is what time the patch came out. Most people in the US are at work on Friday at noon. Not so at 8 PM. People just like feeling victimized.

Just a couple days ago there were posts from people playing low level alts that the lvl 80s were in the low level zones hunting doors and ruining things for the low levels. Now that things have been moved to higher levels, people are mad yet again.

Find a group to go with or ask in guild. I have taken some low level people to help them out.

I for one did not ever think of it as an exploit.

I actually thought it was a response to the horrible drop rate of anything of substance from the BLC. I thought they were giving people an alternate way to have a chance of getting the stuff since the chests were such a fiasco. And an exploit is “to make use of meanly or unfairly for one’s own advantage”. It wasn’t unfair. Anyone could go in at any level and kill mobs and run to the champion when someone announced it was up. Being able to loot the chest more than once was cool and I felt SURPRISED not sneaky or like I was doing something wrong. I didn’t get exotics every time. I got 2 exotics, a mask and some pants, which I equipped, didn’t sell. I was hoping for Mad King Armor but I didn’t get any.

I thought the same thing! I can’t see the people killing me in wvw but by all that is unholy, I can see all of the Norn and Char butts right in front of my Asura trying to do the puzzle!

Since the nerf I got a green and a handful of candy from Family Size and a white item and some coin from Skeleton. And, even with magic finder food and all, I was getting grey porous bone from the regular mobs. Not trick or treat bags, not ancient bones, not chattering skulls…..porous bones and some ooze gunk. Basically the equivalent of Trick or Treating and hoping for a king sized Butterfinger, being happy over fun sized candy bars, but only receiving those icky little black and orange taffy things that are just GROSS!

The Mad King clothing set pieces were dropping from the chests. I didn’t really care about the weapon skins but I did like the Mad King clothing. And I thought hey, bet this is Arenanet’s way of making up for the crappy drop rate on the BLC’s. WRONG!

Mad King armor pieces have shot way up already. Yes, I could buy the pieces but thought I was going to have FUN killing bosses and having the thrill of finding it myself.

I have taken my witch costume to the mists and rode around mining candy corn. I’m on Sorrow’s Furnace and we only owned 1 camp so I was looking for some bots and just goofing around. Ran into several groups of enemy who just looked at me. That was fun.

I am addicted to door hunting! I have taken people through the scavenger hunt.

And best of all, we are going to be having a guild Costume Brawl. I chose a place that is nice and secluded. We plan to brawl and then take our costumes to wvw. I thought it would be fun to run to enemy keeps and yell TRICK OR TREAT! If no treats, we’ll throw toilet paper and eggs! Beware!

So yeah, I’m having a great time!

My husband and I were playing alts in Queensdale last night and saw a chest out in the open. Thought it was weird. He got to it first and opened it and I started to get ticked that the open button disappeared for me until a skritt popped out laughing like a maniac and took off running.

We took off after him trying to slow him down. I thought we had him for sure when we had him to about 15-20% and BAM, he escaped. He did throw some loot at us while we ran after him which we didn’t stop for but after he escaped a couple pieces were still lying on the ground.

I was laughing the whole time because he yells things at you and laughs hysterically.

Old way was better. Not sure of the why or the need for the change.

Some of the mobs die in one hit. However, there are some where a whole bunch of mobs come through the doors, sometimes veterans, and sometimes it spawns events. Level 80’s cannot one shot those. (At least I can’t.)

Also, sometimes it only spits a ToT bag out on the ground. And guess what? Everyone can pick it up. We had a small group running around because it increased the amount of times we could open the door with each person taking a turn. A little guy asked to join us and he had a blast running around with us in areas he would not have been safe in alone.

I have used it as a way to not only get my ToT bags and candy and mats, but to make friends in those maps and help people out.

I have really enjoyed everything so far! I love my witch costume and my minis, the ghost is the best! Costume brawl is a lot of fun! I love riddles and puzzles so the scavenger hunt clues were fun for me, I didn’t cheat!

But the thing I have found to be the most addicting….those doors! I kept telling myself I would go do something else right after this last door. Then in the distance I would see another. Ok, after this door….but look over there, another door!

What has more lives than a cat? A hylek. They croak many times a day.

Ever heard the one about the Asura who had lots of friends? Ha! Me neither!

I once met a Norn so stubborn, I swear he followed the spirit of kitten. (It will probably “kitten” the last word which is funny because it says it in game. Anyway, if it does, it means donkey.)

You can drink the transformation potions you get as rewards sometimes too.

It looks like Tribal armor.
