They didn’t claim to balance around tpvp, in fact they specifically stated that they will not do that but rather “balance the game as a whole” meaning w^3 and pve aswell

everyone just hopes that people with a functioning brain at anet will win the argument

i wouldn’t be too certain tho, 8v8 pretty much showed there are forces at work far beyond rationality

Thief is easy to play, so if you’re skilled, you’ll do even better.

That said, I still find them to be mostly for 8v8 farming, we rarely run with one now in 5v5 since they offer so little compared to other classes, and we typically beat any team with 2 or more thieves.

how does thiefs mobility not offer anything in tpvp? … shortbow 5 is so strong that thief pretty much becomes a mandatory at khylo

2 thief’s might be overkill, duoing any class seems kind of a weak spot in the meta game right now

what people do not yet have figured out is that thief isn’t the 1v1/2v2 miracle they think it is but rather the king of joining previously fair matchups, making them uneven and then drop and ultimately finish those up in a matter of seconds
and before the enemy even gets finished thief is already on it’s way to the next point

mug actually gives it a lot of damage, a ton really and 6k on a squishy isn’t surprising

even a 14k backstab isn’t that much i think i went as high as 17k on a necro and 19k on a frenzy warrior

it’s rather simple really, stack as much +%damage as you can get and boom there you go getting called out for damage hacks

No they didn’t and there won’t be any game modes in the next months to come, what will be there is of course the “soon everything will be better” blogpost that apparently takes about 100h of workload to write up.

@Pray you’re quite clueless on ele I’d say..no offense

Condition builds on ele don’t rely solely on bleeding where did you get that?
Do you know you can dodge the interrupt attempt of downed foes?
is impossible for a good player to lose 1vs1 against a good ele…are you serious?
What about you plan your strategies better so that you don’t get downed in the wrong place to start with?

You do really need to play ele extensively before any analysis

2) that does not change the fact that it gives your enemy enough time to rezz the downed player up, just to clarify it takes 4sec to finish without quickness, about 5-6sec when a single player rezzes to heal from “just downed” up to full so you dodging an enemies interrupt will result in your enemy being alive
3) yes, i’m serious
4) don’t know if trolling, bad or most probably both

it is great that you have so much fun with your ele but once you join the rank of the non-baddies you will probably end up having less fun, no offense

The “I’ve seen this and that profession kill x enemy players without loosing health and hence it is viable/op/whatever” is obviously a rather dull argument.

To understand ele and henceforth its problems you will have to play him thoroughly and as far as it’s possible “competitively” (and yes that is a rather dull answer aswell considering the glorious non-existent rating sytem).

You can obviously built a lot of different builts but it will ultimately boil down to a very few which aren’t quite as horrible as the rest.

Condition builts on ele are pure troll and mainly suffer from earth being the only way to apply bleeds. Now obviously you can’t concept a competitive built around staying in earth 24/7.

Burst builts are far more viable yet have rather huge problems aswell. Most commonly seen is scepter/dagger and dagger/dagger. The main problems with those is that your autoattacks literally don’t do anything (well besides air d/d maybe). While a squishy thief can lay back and hit away 2k+dps with shortbow you’ll end up doing <500dps feeling useless at most while your burst is on cooldown.
Another problem is that you can not finish your target. Besides mist form which is basically the one and only “oh kitten button” on a remarkable 80sec cd for dps eles, they are simply too squishy to reliably finish/rezz anything making them a large liability as rezzing/downing someone is what teamfights ultimately boil down to (yeah thanks for that arenanet).
The liability part doesn’t end here tho, as ele has by far the worst down state skills he’s becoming a liability again when being downed. Ele is the only profession which can not interrupt/circumvent a non-stability stomp right off the bat, making killing an ele extremely easy. The first interrupt is the most precious because it gives you enough edge that you can rezz a player before the enemy is ending his second finish attempt (yeah thanks again for no-cooldown incombat rezz arenanet, great idea! so edgy!).

So that leaves us with the last possibility which is basically a staff heal-ele. Speccing 30 into arcane all the wonderous dodges become blast finishers giving you a nice 2k (4k in water) aoe heal when you dodge into a water field. This built is definately no push-over as it is basically unkillable for anyone besides maybe a decent thief, but usually you can hold 2/3 people easily for quite a lot of time. What it is, is a base-defender spec that is rather boring to play and even more boring to play against. It is somewhat usefull in teamfights as it offers decent healing and condition removal but you might end up lacking too much damage in a 2v2 situation especially if your enemy lacks conditions to be dispelled.
Again the spec is somewhat weak as it has limited finish/rezz potential but both are a lot more possible compared to a dps spec, the weak down state obviously remains.
This spec is great for defending a point but it is actually pretty weak for contesting/capping an enemy point as it offers only a single, long cooldown, easily dodgeable knockback to throw your enemy out of the node. As teamfights with a heal ele tend to simply not end at all for either side you might want to not fight on a point that isn’t yours.

So in the end what remains is a somewhat viable defender spec for ele and damage specs that get outshined in every single category by other professions.
I don’t play ele myself but i definitely think damage-eles need some love, it is nearly impossible for a good player to loose a 1v1 against an ele. It’s basically “dodge the big thing above your head / the ele charge —> you won.”

When GW1 launched all they had was HA I believe. If you guys really think that this game is going to get old fast because they aren’t implementing other options right away, then just look how GW1 did. It lasted years, it did begin to crash in the last couple years but that’s because Anet was focusing more energy to GW2. If you can’t handle waiting for a game that has a promising future in e-sports then you should just leave. New people will always start playing GW2, we don’t neeeeed you guys complaining and kitten.

Please remember me when was GW1 ever popular? Yeah. Never.

I was waiting for an e-sport mmo and i knew i would not get it the closer the release came to be. The problem now is not that GW2 has literally nothing e-sport related, the problem is that PvP in general gets COMPLETELY ignored. Dev’s don’t even bother to lie anymore, it’s that bad. I’ve heard soon quite a few times to many from other developers to know that in 95% of the cases it’s nothing more but an empty phrase and it seems the same way with ANet, i mean seriously ~2weeks now for a kitten blog post that states what they are currently working on? It’s just sad in general as again GW2 in an mmo with promising PvP yet gets destroyed by the inability of few in charge.

Also the whole youtube case pretty much made clear that ANet lived in a dungeon the last 5years and has literally no idea about e-sport. Same thing for “hurr metagame has to develop before we introduce ladder”.

And no, people are not going to wait. If you followed any “wow-killer” mmo in the last 10 years you would know that people actually want to have a game that is in a somewhat finished state or they will simply quit. If you buy a car today you not only expect it to drive but to have heated seats and navigation and whatnot, arguing “well they didn’t have that 10years ago so why should we have it now” is nonsensical and shows of how little you understand of both business and human psyche.

It is not ok to release an mmo without endgame and even less ok to release an “e-sport pvp mmo” without any actual kind of pvp besides zerg battlegrounds and a “tournament” that does nothing but form random heaps of 8 groups and didn’t even work properly for the majority of time.

uMad pretty much nailed it already, bring the AOE & teamfights to the mesmers

don’t spread out to thin, call targets on the real mesmers as soon as they get out of stealth

thief works amazing vs mesmer aswell, d/d & s/p destroys them when their cooldowns are down and before that spam shortbow 1 it basically gets rid of illusions by itself

All three of these features are planned, yes. It is our tradition to not discuss in detail any feature until we have it fully implemented enough that we can talk about it with confidence, as we don’t want to promise a feature to work one way and then end up having it work a different way. We’ll save details on all of those until they are ready to be talked about.

Oh you planned them already! That is splendid indeed! Amazing that it is in the wonderful state of “planned” albeit being basically a selling point of GW2 for anyone looking at the “e-sport” part.

“Planned” as in someone thinks it is worthy of being implemented “soon”.
“Planned” as in we haven’t actually done anything yet but saying that straight to the folks might upset people that we blatantly lied to in oder to sell copies.

Chaplan will be putting out a blog post in the next few days that summarizes where we stand with PvP right now, and where we’re headed.

It is a wonderous business in which creating a few lines of texts explaining yourself takes weeks.

From there we’ll continue to update as other Esports features come online.

Implying there are any e-sport features in the game already. Nope.

Our focus right now is making sure absolutely all of the potential issues/bugs with base tournaments and rewards are 100% cleaned up before we introduce any form of more serious competition.

I could come up with a better excuse in a heartbeat. Oh yeah you just want to make everything look shiny before you start doing anything… Not to mention that tournaments rewards aren’t working, again.

We’re also trying to make sure we’ve given enough time for the base strategies to develop, and for any skills/builds that are out of balance are identified. Once we’re totally convinced things are in a solid state, you’ll start seeing a roll out of major PvP esports features and we’ll get this thing going like crazy.

Yes makes sense. Because you can identify problems with the meta-game without actually properly playing the game. Because pro-teams will develop such refined strategies when they face pub/random groups 99% of the time and are not allowed to scrim against each other either. Makes perfect sense.

Take this opportunity now to learn your classes, learn your builds, lockdown strategies for your teams and get ready! Once we start rolling out the esports features, it’ll build up rapidly from there.

As it looks right now 75% of the community will be gone once you start “rolling out the esports features”.

as tournament rewards got nerfed into oblivion i guess you’ll need to farm a lot of rank points until you will reach dragon to get the tokens

1. 2min is more than enough to do/finish whatever just came up
you queued for a tournament, so be kitten ready

2 you’re neither supposed to know the enemies weapon combos nor are you supposed to talk tactics in the waiting period
by your argument you might aswell introduce a 30min waiting period so tactics might be gone through thoroughly

3 switching professions and builts is something clutch that arenanet has yet to fix but will soon come, again not supposed to be done

4 dumb

having a cumulative 30min wait period for 3 10min games where you basically brain afk random teams is idiotic

it’s nice to see how everyone is completely missing the point about thief

why would i spam heartseeker when i might aswell just do 2k+ dps autoattacking (without quickness) while conserving precious combo points

the overall damage surely is over the top for thief but the single greatest thing about thief is it’s mobility

while not affecting me personally because i couldn’t care less about glory i have team mates that refuse to play defensively against non-serious enemies because they will end the game with 50points while everyone else sits at 200

the whole glory gain system is moronic in tournaments as the whole group should obviously be rewarded equally

The idea of sPVP is to play as a team. Its not a solo game afterall. Being able to revive your ally can be crucial in a game.

reviving an ally as 2 in combat at mere 2 seconds surely is a great game design when 7/8 professions can interrupt your 4 second finishing move

Wow. Kill stealing is part of the game. Just learn to stop them…problem solved…or learn to do it…problem solved.

Instead of being mad about it and self-imposing limitations, learn about the tactic.

waiting around to press your burst hoping it will hit in time while 2-5 other people are doing the same thing has nothing to do with either skill or tactics

there are good and bad ways to approach the ancients but it will remain luck based up to a rather huge part nontheless

first of all, you can’t stop it
when i really would want to force a steal i could pop shadow refuge and sit with my 50% signet boosted steal that will crit the ancients for 6k in a safe 900 distance and there is no way you would have any reasonable counter to it

second of all because of the still not reworked down-system players that are downed will actually rally from the ancient being killed, by whomever team it got killed

i think it’s obvious that the mental capacity of whoever thought of that mechanic was altered by at least 1 illegal substance and it makes fighting at ancients even more of a pain as “downing the enemy” isn’t rewarded rather than punished

having a secondary mechanic in pvp is great but arenanet showed with all 3 maps (the underwater thing does clearly not even qualify as a map) that they do not focus on pvp (yet?!)

while forest ancients rally enemies, guild lords die in 5sec and the catapult repair kit for whatever reason has no cooldown we still haven’t even heard a word of why paid tournaments are not available

playing free tournaments gets extremely frustrating when 95% of your enemies consist of either randoms or teams new to pvp

i think the problems stem from the downd system being extremely poorly designed rather than them changing around stability related spells

but yeah, guardian is kind of really good right now pretty much for the sole reason that warriors are horribly useless
