I often wonder what criteria people use to deem GW2 pvp ‘dead’.
I rarely wait in solo-Q more than 2 minutes for a fight. No other game ever gave me that kind of accessibility.
So, does it mean “I stopped playing because I’ve pewpew’d for months and have nothing tangible to show for it”? Meaning no uber gear, no OMG-I’m-an-internet-hero status/recognition? To me, that’s an indication that people have a toxic need to play full time, and need the game to nurture that desire. Has very little to do with PvP gaming itself..
Granted, I don’t get ‘E-Sports’. I find commentated fights obnoxious, and play for a personal feeling of challenged-improved-succeeded satisfaction, and couldn’t care less if the internet shows others how awesome I am.
Likely, I’m just ‘different’..
(edited by Punkins.2087)
I’ve got about a %60 win rate in solo-Q with my engy.
That said, it took me several months playing ~90 minutes a night to get competent with it.
In a few months we’re going to be here reading threads about how queues are way too long..
I dread the day that they ‘fix’ this issue and I spend more time hoping queues pop than pvping.
Instead of the QQ, man up and fight, kitten . With or against the odds.
Thank god they dont balance based on hotjoin QQ.
still an awesome skill.
There will always be one “most effective for least input” build that most people play.. how this translates to being “the only viable build” is beyond me.
Gamers are just lazy.. goes without saying.
Retaliation and confusion solve this ‘problem’ for me.
Then again when these threads have zero info about class, build, strategy, etc, i see a vent post… nothing more.
1. More game modes.
2. Ability to effectively turn down graphical effects.
3. GvG? Really, #1.. more complexity.
Apparently, I’m the only one that prefers fighting against the odds to sitting in a queue for 30 minutes per fight.. praying to god they don’t implement a truly solo vs solo queue. I have 90 minutes a day to play. Right now, almost all 90 of those minutes are spent pewpewing. With a truly solo q, it will probably be 40.
I’ve recently fallen in love with this build, use it for everything.
Extremely survivable, does good damage assuming you can keep many things on cooldown at all times.
Only downside I’ve found is that fights against classes with peeimp cleanse ability can take forever…

Obnoxious number of self-combos is the best part, the better you get at juggling, the better you can be..

Hold both mouse buttons to throw an ‘aimable’ at your feet. Is win vs melee.
Also, if you want to 1v1 melee, bombs ftw.
oh @punkins it’s not as simple as that.
We’ve all been victim of the mismanagement on this one. The traits in the engineer tree have always been viewed as something they’ve needed to change and first of all fix since launch, other F2P titles (using the same billing) have been able to fix their trait systems that are just as complex without it taking long enough to reach the 1 yr anniversary before actually getting the job done because they focused on changing and sometimes completely breaking other traits entirely (Kit Refinement). Patience died when the last patch arrived and nothing of the concerns of the majority of the posters on these forums were looked at.
I’d repeat myself, but it went over your head the first time, sooooo…
When I was young, i made these kinds of posts.
Fast forward 10 years, I’m a software engineer working on a large scale framework.. I can only smile and shake my head at the sheer ignorance oozing from each and every “omg what is taking so long?!?!?!”…
:)
They’d have to give it a long cooldown in that case or it would be OP, IMO.
Honestly, Engineer has as many or more tools than anyone to deal with thieves.
At least, this one does.
Nothing counters burst like CC / Control, and we have more of it than anyone.
I should know better than reply to a thread that includes a ‘L2P crowd not welcome’ disclaimer, but…… ‘L2P’ it is.
You “think” heavy armor better suits the class, but offer no details as to WHY.
a). You want to use the weapons other than what we have now.
b). You dont like the class’s main mechanic (kits).
c). You dont like the armor (asthetic?).
d). You apparently want the class to become melee range class, given that youre requeasting heavy armor. Which is a massive change.
TLDR: It sounds to me like you like your idea of the reinvented engineer.. not the class as it is currently..
Sooooo what exactly is it you DO like about the engineer?
I dont get why auto attack is such a big deal.. are you guys sitting in one kit, waiting on cooldowns?? If yes.. ugh.
Uhh.. a “mid range” class predicated on mobility makes sense as a heavy how, again?
I’m all for more weapons but honestly, even there I’ve already got more skills available to me than any other class, if i so choose.
Instead of asking that a class you clearly dont like be rebuilt to suit you, why not just go play something you DO like?
Luckily for the rest of us ANET does the design, rather than this forum
:)
1. I’d like to be able to use grenades without having to go 30 points into a trait line.
2. Fix scope.
3. Make gadgets worth considering against kits and elixers.
The real question is why you are sitting in one kit spamming autoattack.
I would argue the exact opposite, that AE increases the skill cap and perhaps even the floor by a margin. Area damage allows zoning, requires constant movement, and is entirely avoidable by players. It also requires good placement by the caster. Single target damage requires…
pressing a button.
Your post really does nothing to prove your point of AE actually removing skill of the game. Judging by your attitude of “this takes no skill”, you don’t want single-target button-mashing spells (although you did say “direct dmg spells”), so what DO you want? Single-target, aimed projectiles? In theory that would be fun as hell, but it is unfortunately impractical, because varying latencies and server delays would make the registry wonky as all hell. Not to mention that would just make the game seem more of a cluster-kitten, which seems to be your issue with AE in the first place.
As for CC, I like the minimal CC approach GW2 currently has. Each class has enough CC to do what they have to do, but they don’t have enough to skilllessly lock out an enemy. This is a preference thing, although I don’t think instant 5 second stuns have any place in GW2, and I don’t think stunlocking or fear spamming has any place in any game.
Articulate, rational replies have no place on this forum, sir.
I don’t see how anything is ‘lost’ 9 months in. No MMO that was great was born that way.. GW2 has the base, meaning great combat. Game still has the potential to be great (already is for my casually-pewpewing style). Clearly, cash is king, and PvP doesn’t sell very well.. common sense.
Anet hasn’t even addressed the ‘problems’ driving zounds of people away since beta as problems…
That’s kinda ‘lost’.
I keep hearing this and expecting to log in to find less people to fight. Strangely, i experience the opposite..
GW2 pvp shows an amazingly large disconnect between the designers’ perception and what casual pvp’ers want
The UI is dreadful with the lack of support for addons and action bar swapping requirements. Also provides very little information. Might be OK for a player who has never played another MMO before but it doesn’t give a good impression to players with experience in other MMO’s, LoL, etc.
Its like the UI is designed around making it as hard as possible to use ALL of your abilities and figure out what is going on. Seems to be resulting from an exceptionally stubborn design philosophy on this one. One that doesn’t have “increasing pvp participation” as the number one goal.
Only one mode for the easy q spvp. Gets old rather quickly and lacks a compelling reason to keep doing it. Lacks that “hook” that gets you addicted to it forever.
I hope it gets better. Regret buying this game honestly.
if you are looking at your UI while pvping, youre doing it wrong.
I think someone’s mad because the game punishes you for glass-cannoning badly..
Yep, it’s a departure from the norm.
hint 1: pay attention
hint 2: dodge
Your options:
a) Great Combat. (this game)
b) Great Grind. (other games)
Pick whichever is important to you, and enjoy.

Great post by the OP. As many times as I tried, GW1 never got it’s hooks into me.
Oh, and there was one other MMORPG with great team combat: Pirates of the Burning Sea. For 5 years it had my heart.. unfortunately it was loss-based and complex, so few ever stuck it out. Never been a better combat engine, imo. Assuming you like BOATS hahahaha…
(edited by Punkins.2087)
Stop looking for reasons to play more and enjoy the game for whakitten does well : great combat.
learn what to dodge and block.
edited because i am dumb :P

for pvp, yeah its fine. for pve, everything is fine… who cares. play what you like.
Ive been using it nearly 8 months and everything else feels clumsy in comparison to me.
aoe knockdown / reflect on a 12 second timer is endlessly useful.
1-2 second reduction in the timer on 3 and we’re balanced, imo.
So… How exactly does one use the flamethrower properly in tournament play?
just drop the kits and pickup HGH.. /faceroll pubs and get smashed by good players because you bring nothing but damage to the table.
edited for clarity.

Small point I’d add: took me a while to realize that napalm is very useful when fighting near-infinitely stealthed thieves.. drop napalm and dance.. they have no choice but to get burnt if they want to hit you.
Also, personally I’d slot air blast with the improved recharged as a lone utility in certain builds if I had the option.
Get a solid state drive.
On the bright side, in the face of broken tooltips, one can always just play the game to figure things out.
only thing massively imbalanced is player skill.
oh, and player’s skill at assessing player skill.
Small scale servers.. 1v1, 2v2, etc.. create some controlled rotation mechanism.
I just spent almost an hour and a half in a duel server and fought once because I couldn’t click ‘join team’ fast enough, while the guys fighting every 3 rotations are telling me “OMG DOOD GET A MACRO!!?!!?!?”.
Frustrating.. I guaranteed it would make a lot of people happy..
get ssd son. not even kidding. ssd guys get in faster. if u cant afford one. enjoy spectating xD
my PC couldnt be much faster. been on solid state for years..

seriously?
only thing giving me trouble right now is the necros with 100 pets and good rangers.
people need to look a little further than page 1 google hits for builds and strats..
here anet, i spend 3 min for you to solve your queue problems:
separate solo q and team q tournies w/ independant leaderboards
only join team tourny with a guild, team leaderboard == guild rank leaderboardprobably everyone here will hate this because it seems restrictive, but it will help create “team” atmosphere and gives a reason to be in a guild.
you’re welcome
And that, sir, is why anet is off making millions from their game while you are… uhh… not.
with 99.9% of that coming from pve/wvw
you’re finally getting it. wewt.

I dont understand this point. You queue for a team based tournament without a team, and get mad when people WITH a team smash you.
sitting in a solo-only queue endlessly waiting for fights is different than taking the time to organize a team how, exactly?
To provide an alternative point of view, I love all GW2 pvp exactly because it is all fight and no carrot-chase.
When I get sick of it, its invariably just because I’ve been playing too much.
To each his own, for sure.
Also, I wonder how many of the people ‘bored’ with wvw are the same crowd that clearly cares little, if at all, about honing personal skill. PvP should always be about player skill progression and never about materialistic gain. By design, you have pve for that.
(edited by Punkins.2087)
I read almost nothing in this thread because they’re all the same. And also: Meh.
On the off chance that it says ‘Engineer is one of the coolest MMO pvp classes ever designed. HGH needs a nerf.’, I agree wholeheartedly.
edit: I actually started reading, but gave up upon hitting the notion that these forums should be used as any sort of design/implementation/testing tool.
(edited by Punkins.2087)
HGH is OP in the condition damage context. Should be nerfed.
I don’t get why there is always a hoard of engineers on the forums waiting to jump on every player who has some complaint about the class. Sure there have been over dramatic posts, but I find myself in a similar position as OP with my engineer and have stopped playing the class entirely since the KR nerf.
I rarely post on the forums, but I did express my dissatisfaction with the upcoming 100Nades nerf only to receive bunch of responses that amounted to “learn to play”, “there are other better builds”; some very helpful advice.
Overall, the class is certainly playable (look at Amadeus’s, Mask’s, and others videos/builds), but there are more effective classes out there in my opinion, and it is the constant redesigning of builds/playstyle that is necessary as Anet removes key elements of the class that was just too much for me.
Anyway, don’t want this post to be too gloomy so I will end by saying that I still hope to return to my engineer at some point.
Because what this general population is really asking for is that the class be DUMBED DOWN to mirror the simplicity of the other classes.
If you’re more rewarded by playing classes that require less input, fine. No judgement.. no problem.
for some of us, engy scratches an itch no other class can.. simplify it and the game no longer has any draw.
does that help?
Looks like my predictions were correct. So glad I didn’t waste my time hoping.
Its all subjective. Many of the quirks that some hate about the engy are the very reason i love the class.
Just play what you enjoy.
Please, don’t fool yourself eventually something will click and you’ll realize like the rest of us that these tawdry quirks are really poor design decisions. At this point there’s so many tawdry quirks they could open up a tawdry quirk shoppe.
believe me, ive played (and deleted) 4 other classes extensively at 80.
Im something like 400 tourney matches into my Engy and loving it still. i think you’ve got it backwards..
